The land-pebble district of Florida, wnich in 1928 supplied 96.7 per cent of the phosphate production of that State and 82 per cent of the domestic requirements of the United States, is centered in Polk and Hillsboro Counties about 30 miles east of Tampa The deposits are unconsolidated sediments occurring as beds of phosphate matrix overlain by a mantle of barren sands and clays. The matrix consists of a mixture of sand (quartz grains), clay, and phosphate rock in which the coarsest sand is much finer than the coarsest phosphate; that is, the sand is segregated in the fine material. Before the introduction of classifiers the concentration consisted of log washing, and screening at about 20-mesh, which was usually the finest size that could be taken to maintain commercial grade, 66 per cent B. P. L. (bone phosphate of lime) or more. When classifiers were introduced some of the fines that had escaped at the head of the washery and some of the minus 20-mesh material isolated during the washing and formerly lost supplied the feed. During October, 1927, the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy began to investigate the amenability of phosphatic sands to gravity methods of concentration. The work was under the immediate supervision of B. W. Gandrud, acting supervising engineer of the Southern Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Will H. Coghill, supervising engineer of the ore dressing section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. More comprehensive testing followed and in the early part of 1930 some of the companies cooperated with the bureau and the above-mentioned institutions in conducting a series of tests on hydraulic classification and tabling. The results indicated that marketable concentrates could be obtained with a recovery of 25 to 45 per cent of the phosphate formerly lost. As a result two companies have introduced hydraulic classification to treat the current tailings, and one of them has substituted classifiers for the 20-mesh screens which had been unsatisfactory. Because the phosphate grains and quartz grains have nearly the same specific gravity, the use of concentrating tables by the customary methods is not applicable. The washeries included in the following report are designated as Nos. 1, 2, and 3.

The National Granite Commission at its annual meeting in Norfolk, Va., in January, 1930, passed a resolution requesting the Bureau of Mines to conduct an economic study of the granite industry. In with this request a preliminary review has been made of trends in the production and uses of block granite.. Some unfavorable conditions were thus brought to light, and certain suggestions regarding a more orderly and consistent growth in the industry are herein discussed. The results of the study are, presented in this report for the earnest consideration of. the industry, and comments are invited, not only on this report but as to future work that might be accomplished by the Bureau of Mines. The authors desire to acknowledge many helpful suggestions and comments from Paul M. Tyler of the Bureau of Mines and from Harris F. Sherman, secretary of the National Building Granite Quarries Association. Miss A. T. Coons of the Bureau of Mines rendered valuable assistance through her wide knowledge of granite statistics. The block granite industry has shown little expansion during recent years. While the value of the annual production has grown from about $14,000,000 in 1904 to nearly $25,000,000 in 1928, the increment in value is caused mainly by mounting prices rather than by increased production. Even granite for memorials shows a very small advance in production volume, although the value has increased from about $3,500,060 in 1904 to more than $11,000,000 in 1928, which is the most consistent growth of any branch of the industry. The value of building granite has fallen for a number of years much below the figure for 1904, and in 1928 was very little in advance of the value attained 24 years previously. The use of granite paving blocks and rubble has shown a gradual decline.

This paper describing the mining methods employed and setting forth prevailing, costs at the property, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines dealing with properties in various mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Vipond mine is a gold property located at Timmins, Ontario, Canada, and operated by the Vipond Consolidated Mines (Ltd.). For the past fiscal year (ended July 31. 1930) ore was mined and milled at the rate of 310 tons per day, and the value of the bullion produced was $896,397.61.

In order to control a chemical process by other than empirical, rule of thumb methods, two types of knowledge concerning the reactions involved must be available: (1) the thermodynamics of the reactions, and (2), by no means less important for efficient operation, the mechanisms and kinetics of the reactions. Information on the thermodynamic side enables the operator to decide upon initial and final conditions, whether heat must be added or removed from the system, whether the reactions proceed farthest in the desired direction at high pressure or low, etc. Knowledge of the mechanisms involves the determination of the individual steps by which an initial set of reactants, under given conditions, proceed to give the desired final products and kinetic studies upon which the mechanisms are based give the speed at which each of these reactions or steps take place. Thus thermodynamic studies of a reaction enable the operator to control the direction and extent to which the reaction can proceed, while kinetic studies enable him to control rates and thus the time efficiency of the operations. The thermodynamics set the limit to which the reacting system approaches; the kinetics tell how fast the system actually approaches this limit. The two types of information are complementary and not antagonistic even though in discussing the mechanism the introduction of thermodynamics is entirely needless and generally of no assistance, while in thermodynamic studies mechanism need not even be mentioned. Heterogeneous Reactions The thermodynamic side of metallurgical reactions has received much attention in the past; the mechanisms, relatively, very little. The main reason for our present lack of information on the mechanisms of these reactions lies in the fact that every one of importance is a heterogenkous reaction; i. e., the substances involved in the reaction exist in more than one phase, while, if we neglect the large amount of work which has been

This paper is the second and concluding report of the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-second semiannual survey of motor fuel marketed in the United States. The first paper Was published as Report of Investigations 30634 and reported data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples. The present paper deals particularly with results of the determination of copper strip corrosion (method 530.22),5 color (method 10.11),6 sulphur content by the lamp method, 7 copper dish evaporation residue (method 530.1),8 and "gum" content as given by the steam-oven method as developed by the Bureau of Mines. 9 The price at the time the sample was taken and the tax are also stated for each sample. The sample numbers used throughout this report are identical with those used in Report of Investigations 306310; ?for example, No. 225 of this report is the same sample as No. 225 of Report of Investigations 3063.

Inclusions of nonmetallic matter have long been recognized as objectionable in steel. A complete theory of the effect of inclusions, which is consistent with that held today, was outlined in Howe's early work on the metallurgy of iron and steel. This, by analogy with wrought iron, assumes that the observed difference in properties between specimens with and across the direction of rolling is due to slag enclosures. The fact that wrought iron shatters in ballistic test is taken as an indication of the effect of inclusions on the resistance to'shock. Since that time, the development of the metallurgical microscope has shown the discrete nonmetallic inclusions in the iron matrix. Better resolution has brought out the great number of inclusions, and the availability of good microscopes in steel mills and laboratories has constantly drawn more attention to these inclusions. This recent emphasis on inclusions has resulted in studies as to their nature, mode of formation and methods of elimination, such as the work of Wohrman, Dickenson, Herty and Schenk. In addition to the published works, many investigations which have not been published have been carried out by private laboratories and have resulted in the application of specifications intended to limit inclusions in many qualities of steel. Neverthless, a clear understanding of the quantitative effect of inclusions on the physical properties of steel has been lacking. It is the specific purpose of this study to determine the quantitative effect of inclusions on the physical properties of steel that determine its behavior under dynamic stress. The study has shown that a quantitative relation between counted inclusions and impact strength does exist in normalized steels, but that factors other than readily visible inclusions are equally important. Furthermore, the present commercial rating of inclusions is unreliable with respect to counted inclusions or dynamic tests, and this study indicates that the tensile-impact test is more reliable as a measure of quality. This paper is the first part of a report giving the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-third semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will give a more detailed discussion of the whole survey. Results of the determination of copper-strip corrosion, color, sulphur content, copper-dish evaporation residue, and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method will be presented in the second paper, which will also include the prevailing retail price and the tax at the time the sample was taken. This paper deals specifically with data relative to gravity, Reid vapor pressure,5 and distillation (method 100.13).6 The samples tested were divided into "competitive-price gasolines" and "premium-price motor fuels," a method of presentation that was begun with the twenty-second semiannual survey.7 A total of 312 samples were collected from service station pumps in 20 cities throughout the United States. Of this number of samples, 207 were "competitive-price gasolines" and 105 were "premium-price motor fuels." All of the samples were collected in March, 1931, and analyzed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Miner at Bartlesville, Okla.

In view of the alarm expressed in many quarters over the increased production of copper to come from Canada and Africa in the future, it is of interest to study the history of the principal producing districts of the world and to attempt to forecast the future part to be played by them. Tables 1 and 2 record the world production and that of the United States, together with their respective rates of increase, both in percentage and actual amounts. The important point in this record is the decline in rates of increase for both the world and the United States, but more particularly in that of the latter, since 1881. The increase for the United States in the last decade is less than that for any decade since 1881, and is only 20 per cent of that for the decade 1911-20. The increase for the world is less than that for the two preceding decades, and is only about 65 per cent of the war decade 1911-20. Referring to Table 1, the decade 1871to1880 showed an increase of 32.l per cent in the world's production, which was the low until the last decade, ending 1930, which shows an increase of only 24.5 per cent. These decades both represent periods of economic stress following wars. In the first case the recovery was very sharp, the percentage increase in 1881-90 reaching a high of 86.4 per cent. It would seem dangerous, however, to assume that a similar high will be reached in the next ten years, because of the severity of the depression brought about by the Great War and the probability of its influence extending well into the next decade.

Among the various studies made by the Coal Fact Finding Commission, appointed by President Warren G. Harding in 1922 to investigate all phases of the coal-mining industry in the United States and to report to Congress, was one concerning the amount and nature of losses in mining bituminous coal in the eastern part of the United States. This study was carried on under the direction of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The writer was appointed field engineer to investigate the problem in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Some 400 mines were studied in these three states and conclusions were drawn from many sources of data. The summary report written by George S. Rice and J. W. Paul states that "the field reports indicate that the recovery in Ohio will remain about as at present, except in the Belmont district; whereas in Pennsylvania it will gradually improve, and in West Virginia it will improve rapidly." Since 1922, the writer has been interested in gathering material to substantiate or contradict these prophecies. Nature of Coal Losses There are six general causes of losses of coal in mining: (1) coal left on the roof and bottom; (2) coal lost in room, entry and panel pillars; (3) coal lost in oil-well or gas-well pillars; (4) coal lost under buildings, railroads and boundaries; (5) coal lost in handling and prepayation, underground and surface; (6) coal lost by rolls, thin or dirty areas and under streams. Local economic aspects that dominate the type of mining conditions determine to some extent whether certain losses are avoidable or unavoidable. In general, however, unavoidable losses include coal lost in the protection of buildings, streams, railroads, restricted properties and around oil and gas wells. Barrier pillars and other safety pillars are unavoidable losses as long as their size does not exceed the minimum for adequate safety. Natural physical conditions beyond human control, such as rock faults, clay veins, partings and binders, bad top and bottom, rolls and horsebacks, cause unavoidable losses. Unavoidable losses

NONMETALLIC inclusions in steel have received much attention by metallurgists during the past few years. Many investigators have been emphatic in stating their belief that these impurities are the chief causes of steel failures, while others think that their effects are negligible. One of the main reasons that definite information on the effects of these impurities is lacking is that no reliable method has been developed for the exact determination of the amounts of these different impurities in steel. Some valuable new information has been brought out by a reliable method for nonmetallic inclusions which has been developed at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board. This procedure satisfactorily extracts some of the more common inclusions from steels, thus enabling the investigator to correlate steel failures with inclusion content. Although the data given herein are the first to be published on the subject of the electrolytic extraction method, the interest in the subject is evidenced by the fact that it is already being used by some 20 to 30 steel companies for their various purposes. Some of the comments received from these laboratories indicate that the method is highly satisfactory: the unfavorable comments, when traced to their sources, have been found to be based on some small mistake made in either installation or operation. The chief discrepancy seems to have occurred in attempts to apply the method to the extraction of inclusions from alloy steels. The procedure can be used only for the plain carbon steels and for such low alloy steels as those containing the usual amount of copper (0.2 to 0.3 per cent). Steels containing the carbide-forming alloys such as chromium, tungsten, etc., present far too many difficulties for the accurate determination of inclusions. Luckily, the iron and manganese carbides do not offer any difficulties and no contamination of the oxide-sulfide residue results. It is highly probable that some modification of the following

Machine loading of coal into mine cars is increasing rapidly. Particular reasons for its use frequently apply to certain localities, but in general, it is profitable to install mechanical coal-loading equipment: (I) when existing hand-loading contract rates prevent further cost reduction; (2) when the height of the coal bed requires that either top or bottom must be taken to place cars in rooms; (3) when labor shortage or limited house-plant capacity prevents the production of desired tonnage ; (4) when tonnage requirements are in excess of possible hand-loaded production from developed areas; (5) when working places are scattered and it is possible to concentrate production, and therefore supervision, by the installation of mechanical equipment; (6) when rapid development is essential. Having decided to install loading equipment, the problem then arises as to what type is best adapted for a particular mine or coal bed, the choice lying between mobile track equipment, pit-car loaders, scrapers, shaker conveyors, belt conveyors and drag conveyors. MajoR FactoRs Influencing Choice of Equipment In determining the type of equipment to be used, the following major factors must be studied: Grades.—Adverse grades, while permitting other types of loading equipment to work successfully, may prevent the success of a shaker conveyor installation. Thickness of Bed.—The thickness of coal governs the choice of equipment. A machine that requires 5 ft. of head room should not be selected for a 3-ft. bed where otherwise it would be unnecessary either to brush top or to lift bottom. Nature of Pavement.—Soft or scaly bottoms are unsuitable for the use of any type of digging loader, shaker conveyors or scraper loaders. nigging loaders and scraper loaders scale the bottom, mixing it with the coal and causing preparation difficulties; shaker-conveyor drives frequently work themselves loose, destroying the conveyor alignment and creating maintenance problems. Just as some students postpone the necessary shave or forget to change their collars, so young engineers in writing drop their articles, definite and indefinite, or omit prepositions where they are required, possibly to compensate for these they use unnecessarily The work will begin [on] Saturday. The work will begin [on] Saturday. `Influenza seriously affected many mines [during] the last three months. Flotation in America [during] the last two years has made tremendous strides. Construction of the mill started [on] August 12, 1915, at which time 75% of the excavation was completed. The idea I wish to convey is [that] there are mineral deposits to which the present law applies badly. For this reason, if there was [for] no other, the ownership of the ore below and [of] the surface above should go together. When a unit of mapping is furnished, be the unit a claim or [a] group of claims, it is necessary .. . A fully stocked store was started in Park City and all employees [were] sold merchandise on a strictly cost basis. The word "merchandise" is left without government or agreement. I suggest: ". . . and merchandise] was sold to all the employees on a strictly cash basis.". The verb `be' is serving concurrently both as a principal and as an auxiliary in the following: At first the work was interesting and [was] liked by most of the men. The sulphide ore was more complex or [was] milled at an increased cost. The failure to repeat tie auxiliary verb in successive clauses is a common error, as in The filter is filled with liquid allowed to empty, and then ignited.

The production of oil during the early development of new oil fields is usually accompanied by large quantities of natural gas. Since in most fields gas under pressure is the main source of the energy causing the oil to move through the sands into the wells and thence to the surface, coincident production of natural gas will continue as long as present-day producing methods are used. Generally the use of this gas is restricted, since markets are not readily available. Consequently, a large portion of the gas produced is often wasted by being blown into the air. The magnitude of gas waste is well brought out in the following statement by Miller:5 Only a few outstanding examples need be cited to show the enormous production of gas that accompanies the discovery of new sources. In April, 1927, the Ventura field produced approximately 210,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day; and during the summer of 1927 Alamitos Heights reached a peak gas production of 102,000,000 cubic feet a day; on December 1, 1928, as a result of the summer's deeper drilling in the Long Beach field, surplus gas production amounted to 125,000,000 cubic feet a day. It is estimated that in January, 1929, the Santa Fe Springs field will have a daily gas production of 387,000,000 cubic feet from the recently discovered Buckbee oil zone. Of this amount 274,000,000 cubic feet a day will be the surplus above the amount required for field and plant fuel, taken out by utility corporations, and that used in repressuring the Meyer sand which lies above the Buckbee zone.

This paper describing t o concentrating practice of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, Morenci Branch, at Morenci, Ariz., is one of a series of articles on concentrating methods and posts being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Morenci concentrator, locally known as No. 6 concentrator, treats 5,000 dry tons of ore per 24-hour day by primary tabling followed by two stages of flotation treatment, at 48-mesh size and 65-mush size respectively.

Outlook for the district......................344 Introduction In an earlier report on the Sumpter quadrangle1 it was briefly stated that the quartz lodes of that region might be separated into several groups or belts on the basis of the kind and abundance of the minerals of which they are composed, and that these belts were disposed as areal zones around the principal intrusive mass of the region. When the opportunity to revisit the region was offered in 1929, as a result of a cooperative agreement between the State Mining Board of Oregon and the United States Geological Survey, it seemed advisable to pay particular attention to this feature of the lodes, in the hope that if the idea of zonal relations was confirmed it might serve as a guide in exploitation.

Kansas ranked fourth on the list of oil-producing states during the year 1930. Progressive statistics show that total production for the year will approximate 42,729,085 bbl. When final figures are compiled for Kansas the production may exceed this estimate, and thereby threaten the all-time record of 43,253,470 bbl. in 1918. Throughout the year the cumulative volume of potential drilled-up production has been increased by new discoveries and by extensions to proven areas in the territory west of the Nemaha (granite ridge) Range. Scattered drilling and leasing operations of a constructive nature occurred, but completions declined to the lowest levels in more than 11 years. Average initial production of current completions climbed to a new all-time high of 512 bbl. to the well. Proration measures were applied to the flush pools. The resulting shut-in potential production, as of December 15, is estimated at 110,000 bbl. This estimate is a wild guess. If all wells of the state were permitted to flow wide open for a period of six months production would not exceed 150,000 bbl. a day. The outstanding development of the year was an intensive drilling campaign in southwestern Kansas, which contributed at least 1,000,000 acres of contiguous natural-gas lands to the natural-gas resources of the United States. Production and Development Prospecting for oil in Kansas began shortly after the initial prospecting at Titusville. Operations and interest in the potentialities became active about 1870. This development was restricted to the shallow districts of northeastern Kansas. By 1895 operations had extended southward to the Oklahoma state line and sufficient prospecting had taken place to prove the potentialities of the state. Active prospecting was extended westward by the discovery of oil on the Nemaha Range in Butler County about 1916. The discovery of oil in Russell County added an extensive borderland province in 1923. The important discoveries of oil in Sedgwick County revived interests and operations throughout this territory in 1928. The development of widespread natural-gas lands in extreme southwestern Kansas during 1930 carried active exploration to the western boundary of the state.

IMPINGEMENT attack, as one of the types of corrosion suffered by condenser tubes, has been given a prominent place in corrosion literature of recent years. It has been reproduced and studied in carefully controlled laboratory tests. Much has been learned of its mechanism, and of the effects of variables such as temperature, amount of air, size of bubble and water velocity. Incidentally the technical public has been given comparisons between the behavior of some few metals under various conditions of impingement attack. The tests recorded here were undertaken in an effort to find at least some sort of qualitative answer to questions which arose occasionally as to the relative resistance of various alloys to impingement attack, and which could not be answered by reference to the literature. The final decision to start work on the problem was influenced in large measure by the nature of the water available in this particular place. The mill of the Bridgeport Brass Co. is located on the Pequonnock River at Bridgeport, Conn., within two miles of its mouth. The water is much like many other estuarine sources which are used in condensers, and which cause particularly severe corrosion. It seemed a most suitable water to use in such tests. As the work progressed an important seasonal variation was noted. The purpose of this note is to record this seasonal effect. The results of individual tests are given only incidentally.

There have been many attempts to devise formulas for flowing efficiency and flow friction of oil-gas mixtures in oil-well flow tubes. Actually, however, flowing efficiency is rarely any real concern of the oil producer and flow-friction formulas contain so many unknown variables as to be of little, if any value. The production engineer is generally concerned with producing as much oil as possible with a minimum expense per barrel, and with the lowest possible net gas-oil ratio. These ends frequently are opposed to each other and the gas-oil ratio usually is sacrificed. In competitive operations, such as in town-lot fields, high current production is the sole interest. In conservative operation the greatest possible amount of oil obviously should be produced by natural flow unless the net formation gas-oil ratio can be improved by circulating gas. In practice this condition frequently exists. It would be a great advantage if the flowing condition of a well could be analyzed to determine the best possible producing status. Anticipating the death of a well so that gas-lift could be started immediately after the death, or preferably before, would save both production and expense. Frequently it happens that circulating gas fails to help a flowing well, or will not flow it after it has stopped flowing naturally. A knowledge of the laws governing flow would save considerable expense in testing such cases. A predetermination of probable pressures and amounts of circulating gas needed to flow wells and give best possible producing conditions would help in designing compressor installations. The optimum producing status of an oil well generally may be obtained by the conditions that subject the producing formations to the least possible back-pressure. This pressure is made up of the weight of the fluid column, frictional resistance to flow and the reaction from the acceleration of the fluid mass. A mathematical calculation of these components to arrive at a condition giving a minimum summation is impractical. Formulas would be complex and the results untrustworthy because it is impossible to assign proper values to the many variables involved.
