In recent years considerable attention has been devoted to the development of new commercial uses for silver, chiefly because of lowered prices and large stocks of the metal. This has led to increased interest in the phase diagrams of silver alloys. The silver-lead diagram is reported' to be of the simple eutectie type, but no measurements of the solubility of lead in silver have been made. The solubility of silver in lead has been estimated2 from diffusion experiments and resistance measurements to vary with temperature from 0.09 to 0.18 atomic per cent (0.05 to 0.10 weight per cent). Silver-rich silver-lead alloys have recently been recommended as high-strength bearing metals3 The silver-bismuth diagram is similar.' The solubility of bismuth in silver. has been estimated to be about 5.5 weight per cent on the basis of X-ray work.4 Matthiessen6 found a solubility of silver in bismuth from 0.25 to 0.50 per cent by conductivity measurements. Silver and thallium form the same type of diagram,' with no data on their mutual miscibilities. We have studied the first two of these diagrams by X-ray methods, verifying their main features and determining the solubilities of lead and bismuth in silver at several temperatures. We also determined the solubility of thallium in silver at one temperature. The solubilities of silver in lead and in bismuth were found to be too low to be detectable. Materials and Methods Mallinckrodt precipitated silver, analytical reagent, was used. Maximum impurities listed on the label were: chloride, 0.005 per cent; copper, 0.001; iron, 0.002; other heavy metals (as Pb), 0.002; and sulphate (SO³), 0.05. In a previous investigation1 the authors studied the effect of pressure on the reduction of iron ores by hydrogen. With hydrogen as a reducing agent, the rate of reduction was increased substantially by increasing the pressure from 1 to 2 atmospheres. The results with hydrogen prompted the present study of the effect of pressure on reduction with carbon monoxide and with mixtures of carbon monoxide and nitrogen. Features of Reduction Process The gas stream in the lower part of the blast furnace always contains sufficient concentrations of reducing gases to complete reduction provided sufficient time is allowed for the reaction to proceed. Reducing gases react immediately with the iron oxide on the surface of lumps of ore. However, as the unreduced surface recedes from the easily accessible exterior of the lump, the reaction proceeds by virtue of the diffusion of the gases into and out of individual pieces. The rate of diffusion of gases, which undoubtedly plays an important role in the reduction of iron ores, depends on several factors, most important of which are: (1) molecular weight or density, (2) pressure, (3) temperature, (4) concentration gradient. Thus, the rate of reduction of a lump of iron ore at any temperature will depend not only on the specific reaction rate but also upon: (1) available surface of unreduced iron oxide, (2) rate of diffusion of the reducing gas to the reacting surface, (3) rate of effusion of the gaseous products of the reaction from the reacting surface, (4) adsorption of the gases on the reacting surface. Pressures developed by the coal during the coking process have been responsible for serious trouble to many companies that operate or build by-product coke ovens. The insidious nature of this trouble is indicated by the fact that oven operators, unless they have ascertained the characteristics of the coals they use, cannot determine the existence of dangerous pressures until after the damage has been done. A rather popular misconception is that ease of pushing of the charge at the completion of the coking period indicates that no dangerous pressure has been developed, but this is far from the truth; pressures developed during the coking period are often completely dissipated by the shrinkage of the charge in the completion of coking, and so any criterion based on the ease of pushing is futile. However, methods of testing coals are available that will definitely distinguish the dangerous coals from those that are safe, and such methods have been brought to a high degree of certainty. The operator should take no risk that involves either a lack of knowledge of the behavior of coals during coking or the failure to believe that certain of the coals or coal mixtures can cause damage to the oven structure. This merely tends to minimize the problem and leads to claims that coking coals of all kinds may be carbonized with no danger of damage to the oven structure provided some particular kind of byproduct oven is used. This lack of appreciation of the true situation is in itself one of the main factors leading to damage of coke-oven structures. Coals that develop more than a certain safe pressure cannot be used in by-product coke ovens without causing damage to the side flue walls. The following paper presents a highly certain method for the measurement of the pressures developed during the carbonization of coal—a method that is the culmination of many years of work on the problem in which a number of methods for the purpose were investigated and used. While actual pressures found may appear to be small when expressed in pounds per square inch, the number of square inches in each oven wall is so large that the total pressure on the oven wall becomes an enormous load.

In this paper it is shown that the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field for the area of the United States can be very closely approximated by assuming it to be the sum of the vertical components of two magnetic fields. The first of these is the field of the centered dipole described by J. Bartels,l the axis of this dipole intersecting the earth's surface at two antipodal points, the one in the Northern Hemisphere being at latitude 78.5°N. and longitude 69°W., and the dipole having such strength that the vertical component of its field at its axis pole is 0.63 oersted. The second field is that due to a second dipole situated halfway between the center of the earth and a point on the earth's surface at latitude 38.5°N., longitude 91.5°W., the axis of this dipole being along this radius, the south pole being toward the surface, and the dipole being of such strength that its field at the point on the surface mentioned above is 0.069 oersted. Using the field computed on this basis, tables of latitude and longitude correction factors were computed and are included in the paper. It is also shown that the secular variation in the earth's magnetic field may be roughly accounted for by assuming it to be due to motion of the second dipole described above. Although there is an error in the equation used for computing the strength of the field due to the second dipole, the distribution of the field computed is very nearly that of the assumed arrangement of dipoles. Subsequent work by the author reveals that minor changes can be made in the location of the second dipole, which will make the computed field fit the observed field even more closely. It has also been found2 that the vertical component of the field may be represented equally well by a purely empiric relationship.

Ore recovered by North Broken Hill Limited as a result of mining operations at its Broken Hill leases is obtained, at the present scale of working, in the proportions of 80% from the North mine and 20% from the British mine sections, and is composed mainly of a silver bearing, sulphide lead and zinc mineral, in association with the gangue materials mentioned later in the text.The lead-zinc sulphide lode at the North mine is deposited in folds in pre-Cambrian sedimentary schists. These folds pitch north-east at approximately 40° and dip north-west at approximately 60°. In plan the deposit appears as two lenses designated on the mine as the "Southern" and "Northern" ore-bodies.The Southern ore-body yields the main tonnage of crude ore. The sulphide mass here overlies a heavy layer of rhodonite which persists with the pitch of the lode. In the central section of this ore-body the sulphide zone is coarse grained and of high grade with a wide range of minerals in the gangue dilution. Quartz, garnet, ftuorite, rhodonite, and felspar are common, whilst chalcopyrites, pyrites, pyrrhotite and green felspar are often present. The Northern ore-body is dolomitic to siliceous in nature. TEMPERATURE measurement in wells is an old practice and geothermal gradients have been of interest to geologists for many years.1,2 Their application to the operation of oil wells is a more recent practice. It has long been recognized that temperature anomalies occur in drilling and producing wells but thermometers that could obtain a satisfactory record of the anomalies were not available.3 The normal geothermal gradient is con-sidered as being about one degree Fahren-heit for each 60 ft. of depth.4 This "nor-mal" gradient varies in different areas, but whatever it may be in an area there is little variation from the surface to as deep as the drill penetrates. The normal gradient is appreciably changed by gas expanding from the reservoir into the borehole or by the movement of fluid through a borehole while drilling, producing, or circulating. It is the resulting anomalies and abnormal gradients from which conditions in wells can be interpreted. Some of the applications of such interpretations are locating the position of oil or gas sands, permeable strata in a reservoir zone, gas-oil contact, source of water, casing leaks, and the top of cement behind casing.

During 1939 oil production experienced a new and important increase in Argentina in the productive areas of Comodoro Rivadavia (Territory of Chubut), Plaza Huincul (Territory of Neuquén), and those of the. Province of Mendoza. Production in the Standard Oil Company's field in the Province of Salta declined, but that of the Government oil fields in that province inereased 62.5 per cent.

The amount of published literature in the field of mechanical properties of magnesium alloys is not great; particularly with respect to rolled alloys. Haughton and Prytherchl have summarized most of the articles to 1937, including their own work on sheet. Although many papers can be found dealing with the technology of magnesium and the alloys now in commercial use, there does not seem to be any work dealing exclusively with the variation in properties of rolled alloys as caused by changes in alloy composition. Comparison of published data reveals considerable discrepancies in properties of alloys of the same composition, probably due to differences in the details of working and heat-treating followed by different workers. The purpose of this paper is to study the properties of alloys in conditions where the effects of such differences have been eliminated. It is well known that the strength and ductility of metals are functions of the working and heat-treating they have received, as well as of their chemical composition. In comparing alloys with respect to these properties, therefore, all possible combinations of the variables of the fabrication procedure ought to be carried out on each alloy. One or more of these treatments mill produce the highest ductility, or strength, or both. These highest properties would then be selected as characteristic of each alloy, and alloys would be compared on the basis of those properties. Thus a separation of the effect of composition and that of workiiig and heat-treating would be achieved. In this paper, however, a compromise with completeness has been made by carrying out a restricted number of treatments. As a consequence, the properties obtained are not necessarily the best that the alloy is capable of exhibiting; but since all alloy3 have been treated by the same method, the results ought to be comparable. The elements selected for the study comprise a class that will alloy easily with magnesium, and that are reblatively cheap. Each was added in different amounts, up to a limit that varied with the element.

The softening temperature of coal ash, as determined in the laboratory, has been used for years as an indication of the tendency of coal to form clinker and slag. It has not, however, provided an index of unfailing and complete reliability for forecasting the relative performance of different coals, even in the same plant and under the same conditions of operation. A large amount of investigation has been done in attempts to account for this, but practically all of this has been in the direction of studying the chemical constitution of coal ash. Much has been learned, but without much progress toward a better practical application of knowledge to the selection of coal. There has always seemed to be an important factor that eluded discovery. It has long been recognized that the ash-softening temperature as determined in the laboratory had one weakness, in that it represented the temperature at which a thorough mixture of the whole ash of the coal would melt, the mixing having taken place before the heal was applied. This does not, of course, simulate what takes place in practice. With certain exceptions, which will be noted later, almost all of the investigations that have been made, especially the chemical studies of coal ash, have likewise dealt with a mixture of the whole ash in the coal. The present investigation differs from these fundamentally in its approach to the problem. It started from the observation that some clinkering and slagging obviously takes place in a boiler furnace at temperatures below the laboratory-determined ash-softening temperature of the coal. Knowing that coal as it is shipped to market is a heterogeneous mixture of diverse mineral substances, each of which may act independently of the others in the initial stages of clinker and slag formation, it seemed logical to investigate separately the softening temperature of the ash in physically separable portions of the coal, and to determine the relative quantities of ash contributed by each portion. The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the importance and the usefulness of phase measurements in electrical prospecting for ore, a subject about which virtually nothing has been published. The paper describes a new field method for ore prospecting, the "Turam" method, which makes use of phase measurements, and which has been used with great success for five years. Of the principal geophysical prospecting methods, the gravimetric and magnetic methods determine the direction and strength of the static fields of force of the earth. By seismic and electrical methods, fields of force are applied to the block of ground under investigation. By these methods a third parameter can be measured, besides the direction and strength of the field; namely, the time of arrival of the applied field at the different observation points. This time of arrival has been practically the only parameter measured in seismic work, while in electrical prospecting it has generally not been considered, the measurements having been limited to determination of direction and strength of the applied field. Phase Measurements In the most widely used of the electrical prospecting methods, those using alternating current, the time of arrival of the "electrical vibration" at the different observation points can be carried out as phase measurements. The phase angle measured then expresses, in part of one "vibration," or one cycle, how much the electrical vibrations at the observation point are out of step with those close to the source of the field. A phase lag of 45", for instance, means that the alternating field in the observation point is one-eighth of one complete " vibration," or cycle, out of step behind the field at the source. If the frequency is, say, 500 cycles per second, a frequency often used in electrical prospecting, a phase lag of 45' then means that the time required for the field of force to travel from the source to the observation point is 1/8 ' /500 = 1/4000 sec. Since the phase angle can be measured with an accuracy of a fraction, say one-tenth, of a degree, and the frequency can be considerably higher than 500, it is readily seen that the time of arrival can in this way be measured

The four papers making up this symposum have been prepared especially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathematical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismograph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspests of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. Much valuable scientific research has been performed in recent years on the subject of phase behavior of hydrocarbons.l-11 Engineers employed in petroleum production are interesting themselves in this work as well as in methods of applying the fundamental data available to the solution of their various problems. Recently a number of papers have been published in which applications of phase behavior have been made to specific cases pertaining to critical phenomena.l2-16 Little effort, however, has been made in the literature to show the relation between changes occurring in the critical region and the more common phase behavior, therefore it is believed that a presentation of the fundamentals of phase behavior with reference to hydrocarbons is timely. Study of phase behavior is not new. In the metallurgical field, knowledge of heterogeneous equilibria has advanced tremendously, particularly with reference to solid-solid and solid-liquid behavior. Much is known about vapor-liquid equilibria too, but few engineers are familiar with this subject. Definition of Terms In a discussion of this sort, a definition of terms used is most important. Such terms as "pressure," "temperature" and "volume" need little definition other than mention of the units in which they are considered. Pressure is expressed in pounds per square inch absolute. Temperature is usually expressed as degrees Fahrenheit or degrees Rankine. In considering thermodynamic and phase behavior, the use of the absolute, Rankine, scale is desirable. Volume is expressed as specific volume, such as cubic feet per pound. This will be recognized as the reciprocal of the specific weight. IN September 1937, the Ohio Copper Co. inaugurated the treatment of its copper-bearing mill tailings at Lark, Utah. These tailings had been accumulated during the regular operation of the Ohio Copper mine and mill over the period 1007 to 1019. Gravity concentration had been employed except for a comparatively short period in 1919, when flotation was used. The ore milled during that period assayed about I per cent Cu. The chief copper mineral, chalcocite, was dissemi-nated in a shattered quartzite, mainly along fracture or cleavage planes. The quartzite gangue was extremely hard and grinding to liberation resulted in excessive sliming of the "sooty" chalcocite, with consequent high tailings losses. Recovery on the seven million tons treated was prob-ably less than 6o per cent of the total copper content. As early as 1918, attempts had been made to sample the dump. In 1928, a com-plete sampling program was undertaken. The sampling consisted of seventy-four 5-in. post auger holes drilled to the full depth of the dump at regular intervals of 250 ft. Each 10-ft. portion thereof com-prised a sample for analysis. Each sample was screened, rolled, divided into three parts, dried and assayed. The reject was retained for testing purposes. From the depth of the auger holes a contour map of the dump was plotted, Fig. 1, which gives percentages of tonnage and copper content.

It is generally agreed that cold-working mechanically refines the grains into smaller fragments and with continued working these are oriented with certain crystallographic directions bearing a relation to the direction in which the metal is worked. Some of the energy expended on the metal during plastic deformation appears in the form of heat, but a very small portion remains in the metal as stored energy. The entropy, specific heat capacity, temperature at which recrystallization will just begin, density, ductility, elasticity, tensile strength, and resistance to corrosion are affected. These properties have been studied extensively and some of the changes in the physical properties due to cold-working were attributed to lattice distortion.l-8 The broadening of the Ka lines on the X-ray diffraction diagrams of plastically deformed metals is believed to indicate lattice distortion, and consequently the existence of internal stresses. The evidence supporting this theory rests solely upon the observed experimental fact that the diffraction lines are broadened and the Ka doublets are completely diffused. Elam9 has reviewed the matter of lattice distortion in relationship to the hardening of metals by plastic deformation. The X-ray diagrams of plastically deformed metals differ in general from annealed metals. The hardening of a metal was believed due to lattice distortion.9 The resolution of the doublet is lost when a metal is cold-worked and the Laue spots are elongated. At one time this elongation was thought to indicate the elastic bending of the crystal planes. However, more careful work showed that the asterism was due to new orientations developed within the fragmented grains during plastic deformation. Some theories attributed the hardening to fragmentation of the grains into smaller units. Jeffries and Archer,ll after carefully considering the problem of work-hardening from many angles, came to the conclusion that cold-working mechanically refines the grains into smaller crystal fragments, some of which at least differ in orientation from the parent grain. [The Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of lines, in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington, has completed a detailed investigation of the physical and chemical properties of western cokes made or used in the Pacific Northwest, as evaluated by standard methods. 4/ One of the chemical properties determined, to which more or less importance has been attached, was reactivity or combustibility. As no standardized procedure is available, it was necessary to develop a workable method for evaluating this property. The combustibility of coke is usually measured by the formation of carbon dioxide with time at a particular temperature or by the reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide. Analysis of the resulting gases commonly is required to evaluate the result. The method described in this paper is simple and direct in that the sample of coke or other carbonaceous material is weighed as it burns; the loss in weight and time is indicated by a balance and clock arrangement. Gas analyses are not rewired. Methods similar in principle have been used by Tu, Davis, and Hottel6/ and by Oshima and Fukuda7/ for determining the combustion rate of carbon and for studying the effect of ash on combustion characteristics. During an investigation of the copper-rich portion of the copper-silicon-iron system as part of an extensive research program on P.M.G. alloys, which was begun in 1937 in the research laboratory of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, it became apparent that the binary copper-silicon system below 7 per cent Si needed revision, therefore an investigation was undertaken. Both X-ray methods and microscopic technique were employed. Despite the many investigations that have the clarification of this system as their object, no two successive reports on the system have agreed in placement of the alpha-phase solubility limit, and uncertainty about the secondary phase first to appear has been voiced several times.3,4,5 It was therefore not surprising, when T. Isawa's6 and M. Okamoto's7 works were reported at the time we were finishing up our experimental work, to find essential disagreement between their results and ours. But when C. 5. Smith's latest work on the copper-silicon systema was published just as we were finishing our laboratory report, it was indeed gratifying to find that the latter's diagram and ours checked in all essential features, except the temperature of the peritectoid line above 830" C. Many attempts were made to retain the beta phase during the present investigation, but none was successful. Isawa,6 however, reports that he has been able to obtain X-ray photograms of the beta phase. The structure, he states, is body-centcrcd cubic with a lattiee constant of 2.848 ,&. at 7.2 per cent Si. Okamoto7 and Smith8 both use the designation Kappa for the hexagonal phase, and to avoid confusion this designation will he adhered to in the present paper. Preparation of Samples The alloys were melted in vacuum in a high-frequency furnace. from copper cathodes containing 99.98 per cent Cu, and specially refined silicon supplied by The Electro Metallurgical Co. [Internal-combustion engines have been used in Belgian mines for a long tine. As early as 1899, the use of these engines underground was considered, but the general policy was to prohibit such an application unless ministorial permission was granted' in special instances. At that time only gasoline engines were available, and a few of these were installed as stationary engines, although in general they were replaced later by electric or compressed-air motors. However, the number of gasoline locomotives continued to increase. Regulations governing the use of these locomotives soon were formulated and as early as 1920, when a now set of regulations was promulgated, the use of gasoline locomotives in mines could be authorized by the Provincial Inspection Department and no longer depended on obtaining a ministerial decision. Since 1931 this authorization may be given by the Chief Inspector of Mines, Director of the Mining District. Since 1920, safe practices have boon incorporated in the regulations.]

The year 1939 in Kansas, with a production of 57,944,300 bbl. from 19,669 wells, shows a slight recession from the peak of oil production reached the previous year, when slightly over 59,000,000 bbl. of oil was marketed. The previous peak had been reached in 1917 with 45,451,000 bbl. marketed. Another still earlier peak had been reached in 1904, when slightly less than 5,000,000 bbl. was produced and sold. The production of gas probably reached a new peak during 1939 with a total of over 69 billion cubic feet. Between the peak of the year 1908, when over 80 billion cu. ft. was produced, and that of 1939 the production dropped to 16 billion cu. ft., in the year 1921. During the year 1458 wells were drilled. This figure is somewhat lower than that given in several trade journals, because it does not include wells that were deepened or recompleted in a different geological horizon. Nearly 75 per cent (1029) of the total number of wells were completed as commercial oil wells (824 in western and 205 in eastern Kansas). The commercial gas wells completed number 71, of which 24 are in eastern Kansas and 47 in western Kansas. The remaining completions include 154 dry holes in eastern and 204 dry holes in western Kansas. Based on daily potential capacity the new discoveries of the year accounted for a cumulative initial production of 264,000 bbl. in eastern and 1,158,827 bbl. in western Kansas. It is interesting in this connection to note that the number of wells completed in the state rose gradually to a first peak in 1904, when 2782 were drilled. The number dropped off rapidly to 368 three years later, but rose to the second and highest peak in 1918, when 4671 wells were completed. In the period between 1904 and 1912 more gas wells than oil wells were completed. Between the high peak of 1918 and the somewhat lower peak of 1937, the low point was reached during 1931 with the completion of only 470 wells. In the matter of new pools discovered, Kansas again ranks high. The exact number depends somewhat upon the interpretation of a "new" area—whether it should be called a new pool or a long extension of an older pool.
