Transmission electron microscopy techniques hare been used to study the spontaneous marfensite phase that forms during the thinning of Ti-Cr alloys. The structure of this phase has been found to differ. from the hcp martensite and has been identified as a clisforted fcc lattice. The spordaneous marlensile in this system is interpreted as a metastable isomorph of the equilibriunz TiCr, phase. WHEN thin-foil specimens for transmission electron microscopy were prepared from metastable alloys of the Ti-Cr system, a spontaneous transformation occurred' when the foils contained the untrans-formed 0 phase or two-phase mixtures of the 0 and w phases. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship that exists between the crystal structure of the spontaneous product and that of the matrix. The differences between the martensite transformation that occurs in the bulk material and the spontaneous reaction that occurs during the preparation of thin foils are compared with the observations that have been reported for similar phenomena in a commercial titanium alloy.' A spontaneous reaction that exhibits characteristics similar to a martensite transformation has been reported to occur in thin foils prepared from the retained metastable structures of several alloy systems.1'3"7 ~ull~ observed such a spontaneous reaction in 0 brass and attributed the apparent increase in the martensite transformation temperature to a decrease in the non-chemical free energy associated with bulk strain energy. He also showed that the spontaneous product did not have a specific habit plane, but that its orientation relationships to the parent matrix were dependen on the thickness of the transforming region. It has also been pointed out by Breedis6 that in thin films the absence of the constraints imposed by a bulk matrix can cause different requirements for the martensite plate interface and lattice distortion which is reflected bv a dependence of the transformation mechanism on the specimen geometry. In the case of the spontaneous reaction reported for Au-Zn alloys7 a definite habit plane was determined and shown to correspond with the habit plane calculated on the basis of the Bowles and Mackenzie crystallographic theory of the martensite transformation.'- lo EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A series of titanium alloys containing 5.5, 5.9, 6.4: 7.6, 8.0, 11.3, and 18.7 at. pct Cr were prepared from high-purity (iochrome) chromium and iodide-grade titanium by levitation melting. The experimental procedure used for sectioning the alloys and for thin-foil preparation has been reported in an earlier paper.' X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained using a 114-mm Debye-Scherrer camera and Cu-Ka radiation. In order to minimize fluorescent radiation from the specimen, a strip of aluminum foil 0.002 in. thick was placed in contact with the X-ray film. After a specimen was removed from the camera: an additional X-ray experiment was performed, to insure that no spurious lines were obtained due to the presence of the aluminum foil. The interstitial impurity analysis for the alloys used in this study was as follows: oxygen, 100 ppm: hydrogen, 30 ppm: nitrogen, 28 ppm. An investigation of the hazard of spillage of liquefied natural gas (LNG) onto water is described. About 2,000 gallons of LNG were consumed in various tests. The initial vaporization rate of LNG following spillage was found to be 0.037 lb/ft2 sec; when the spill was confined, this vaporization rate was moderated after about 20 seconds by the growth of an ice layer on the water surface; when the spill was unconfined, a coherent ice floe was not observed and the vaporization rate was essentially time independent. The maximum diameter (in feet) of the spreading LNG pool was found to be given by 6.25 Wo 1/3, where Wo is the weight of LNG in pounds, Downwind of a natural gas source, time-averaged methane concentrations were given in good approximation by standard air pollution equations. However, peak concentrations were as much as twentyfold higher than average, adding an additional factor to the assessment of hazard. The effect of layering by the cold vaporized natural gas was similar to the effect of a temperature inversion on normal gases in the atmosphere. Small-scale explosions were observed on pouring LNG onto a water surface; no single explanation seems pertinent to all of the incidents observed.

The uniaxial deformation of thermally ordered and disordered polycrystalline Cu3Pt was studied by means of the X-ray line - broadening analysis according to Warren and Averbach and the extension of this analysis to ordered fcc materials by Mikkola and Cohen. Because of the heat treatment history, extinction had a pronounced effect on the X-ray spectra of ordered and disordered C%Pt at small plastic strains. After an appropriate correction for extinction, the long-range order in thermally ordered ChPt was found to decrease at a slow constant rate with plastic strain. Furthermore, the antiphase domain probability increased at a constant rate to 17.5 pct strain. The effective particle size behavior indicated that the stacking fault energy is lower in ordered than in disordered Cu3Pt. Analysis of the stress-strain curves shouled that ordered Cuzt has a slightly lower yield Point but a much higher work-hardening rate than disordered Cu3Pt. THE presence of long-range order in a solid-solution alloy has a marked effect on its mechanical properties. While this effect has been known qualitatively for many years, it was not until recently that detailed investigations have been performed to determine the exact role long-range order plays in this strengthening mechanism. The development of an advanced, quantitative. X-ray diffraction analysis by Warren and Averbachl and the extension of this analysis to the L1, type super lattice by Mikkola and cohen2 have greatly accelerated research in this field. The research reported in this paper consisted of two primary phases. The first phase was to determine the effect of long-range order on the tensile properties of polycrystalline Cu3Pt. This objective was accomplished by comparing the stress-strain behavior of thermally ordered CusPt to that of thermally disordered CusPt. The second phase of the research was to determine the difference between the atomic arrangements in thermally ordered and thermally disordered Cu3Pt as a function of uniaxial deformation and thereby gain a deeper insight into the mechanism by which long-range order affects the tensile properties. This second objective was accomplished by applying the Warren-Averbach method of peak profile analysis to the X-ray diffraction patterns obtained from ordered and disordered Cu3Pt after given amounts of uniaxial deformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The Cu3Pt was prepared by vacuum melting and casting. After a homogenization anneal, the ingot was cold-rolled to sheet form. Two tensile specimens with gage sections of 2.50 by 0.500 by 0.115 in. were carefully machined from the sheet. The specimens were polished with a final step of 600-grit paper to insure smooth diffracting surfaces. Finally, one specimen was heat-treated to yield an average grain diameter of 0.016 mm and an initial degree of long-range order, S, of 0.825. The other specimen was water-quenched from above the critical temperature, 645"C, to yield an average grain diameter of 0.017 mm and zero long-range order. The heat treatment history of each specimen is shown in Table I. The tensile tests were performed utilizing a Research Incorporated Model 900.95 Materials Testing System. This unit employs a closed-loop feedback system which maintains a constant strain rate through an extensometer clipped to the gage section of the tensile specimen. A strain rate of 1.32 i0.02 x 10"4 sec-' was employed in testing both specimens. In the X-ray diffraction analysis, a General Electric XRD-5 diffractometer equipped with a pulse-height analyzer set for 90 pct efficiency was employed. The goniometer speed selected was 0.2 deg, 20, per min. Filtered Cu radiation was used for all peaks and all peaks were chart-recorded. Because of nonuni-form grain size. it was necessary to spin the specimens during X-ray analysis in order to obtain reproducible integrated intensities. The spinning rate was 2000 i100 rpm. The application of the Warren-Averbach method of peak broadening analysis to a diffraction pattern is very time consuming if done manually. In this research, the calculations involved were performed with the aid of a computer program by wagner.3 As reported by Wagner, the program is written in Fortran TV computer language. It was modified to Fortran I1 so as to be handled by the IBM 7072 computer at Van-derbilt University. The Bureau of Mines Solid Waste Program is directed toward three main areas of research: (1) Extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) recovery of mineral and metal values from wastes generated in the industrial extraction, processing, and utilization of raw materials and mineral-base products; and (3) upgrading and utilization of automotive scrap. The Bureau also has a contract and grant program which supplements the in-house research and aids in the training of personnel in the proper management of mineral- and metal-based solid wastes.

Evidence is produced below to show that the carbide "Mn,C," reported by Kw,and ersson' is really a mixture of two carbides. One is an Fe-Mn carbide which is probably isomorphous with hexagonal Mn15C4, reported by Bouchand and Pruchart.' The othev is a tetragonul Fe-Mn carbide with cell dzmensions close to those reported previously by the author3 for an Fe0.1Mno. carbide. IN a recent investigation several Fe-Mn carbide specimens, each weighing about 5 g, were prepared in a manner previously reported.3 Debye-Scherrer X-ray photographs were taken of at least two samples from different parts of each specimen using a 114.6-mm-diam camera. The exposure time was 2 hr using filtered chromium radiation, a tube voltage of 35 kv and a tube current of 10 ma. In the case of one specimen, which contained nominal weight percentages of iron, manganese, and carbon of 9.40, 84. 6,, and 6.0, respectively, duplicate chemical analyses indicated f1.2 and 5.5 wt pct C to be present in the two samples taken of the specimen: no graphitic carbon was detected. One powder-diffraction pattern of this specimen indicated the presence of the tetragons: carbide reported earlier,3 (a = 6.772A, c = 9.427A), plus cementite (O), plus an unknown structure. Injury experience in the mineral mining and processing industries during 1968 was slightly improved in the nonfatal-injury record but worse in the fatality record. The resulting frequency rate of all injuries was slightly better, whereas the injury-severity rate retrogressed appreciably from the figure for 1967. Overall operating activity, as measured by man-hours of worktime, was slightly higher in 1968. However, there were several major segments of the mineral industries in which activity was lower owing to reduced demand for mineral products and to several major work stoppages. These statistics comprise the injury and work experience of all personnel engaged in production, exploration, development, maintenance, repair, and force-account construction work, including supervisory and technical personnel, and working partners and owners at mineral-producing and mineral-processing establishments in the United States. Data concerning officeworkers are excluded except for the oil and gas industry for which such information is not separable. All injury rates and totals are calculated from data before rounding. The data for 1968 are preliminary except for the anthracite, coke, petroleum and natural gas, native asphalt, peat, and slag industries, which are final. The figures represent full coverage for all industries except oil and gas for which coverage is not complete, particularly with respect to small companies.

For the first time in the history of shaft sinking, the concept of mid-shaft loading has been used. By making use of available hoisting capacity during drilling periods, development work on underground hoist chambers and ore-pass and ventilation by-pass systems at Vaal Reefs South gold mine is being done simultaneously with sinking. This factor, together with the unusual configuration and design of the twin-shaft system at Vaal Reefs South, and the use of raise borers in the installation of ore-pass and ventilation by-pass systems, will mean that the shaft will be commissioned at least a year earlier than would have been possible had conventional methods been used. The possibilities of mid-shaft loading in reducing the time normally taken by shaft service development were recognized by Anglo American Corp. consulting engineers and Shaft Sinkers Pty. Ltd., the company which is sinking both shafts at Vaal Reefs.

"With the trend towards bringing into production ore bodies of lower and lower copper content every possible avenue of approach to achieve maximum copper metal recovery and keep milling costs to a minimum are of increasing importance.Equipment manufacturers have contributed a great deal by designing larger mills, flotation machines, pumps, etc. in lowering capital and operating costs; instrumentation and automation usually as a joint effort of operating staffs and equipment manufacturers have resulted in lower operating costs and improved metallurgy. Likewise manufacturers of chemicals used in mineral beneficiation have directed their research and development at new flotation reagents and treatment schemes to complement the needs for more efficient products, permitting coarser grinds without detriment to recovery, higher flotation rates, higher degrees of selectivity, as well as chemicals to improve settling, clarification and filtration. The various treatment schemes in use and suggested for consideration are:1) The choice of the flotation treatment scheme is largely dictated by the desire to operate a simple circuit, originally consisting of rougher and scavenger flotation, with scavenger concentrate either returning to the head of the rougher circuit or joining the rougher concentrate for cleaning by reflotation, with and without prior regrinding. The cleaner tailing was also recycled to the head of the rougher circuit. In the case of porphyry copper ores, this was originally the standard circuit. Lime is the preferred alkalinity regulator to adjust pH, usually in the range 10-12.To avoid the undesirable effects of circulating loads and gain the advantage of simplified control of the rougher circuit, open circuit cleaning is practiced more and more. In this scheme, cleaner tailing is scavenged to produce a discardable tailing and the scavenger concentrate returned either to the cleaner or the regrind circuit."

Probability sizing, a fairly recent development in the field of particle separation, is now under investigation to determine its value to the mining industry. The method employed is probability sizing through a vibrating network of decreasing screen openings. While probability sizing is not new, the possibility of using it for coarse, highly abrasive ores at high tonnage rates has only recently appeared to merit practical consideration. The advantages of probability sizing vs. conventional screening methods are: (1) reduced space requirements for a high capacity unit, (2) fewer moving parts, (3) more versatile product sizing selection, (4) reduced maintenance requirements, and (5) lower power consumption. Screening is a necessary part of virtually every crushing circuit. At some stage in the process, particle separation becomes a controlling factor in the operation. The basic type of screen in use today is the vibrating unit, which usually employs a mechanical vibrator of one type or another to obtain sizing and material transportation across the screen surface. The vibrating screen has its limitations and inherent problems. Operators must live with: (1) high maintenance — worn rods, screen cloth, spacers, cross members, chutes, etc., (2) low capacity in relation to floor space requirements, (3) extreme noise levels, (4) high power consumption, and (5) structural problems in the screens and supporting steelwork. All plant operators have become tolerant of these drawbacks through the years, and little innovation has been developed in screening. The vibrating screens in use today incorporate improved metals, more efficient power sources, better lubricants, and increased manufacturing skill, but the basic machine itself remains unchanged. Screening is a relatively small part of most plants' operating expenditures and gets relatively little attention from research and development. The HiProb sizer is a new approach to the problem of particle separation on a high tonnage basis. Developed by Dr. Fredrik Mogensen (president of Fred-rik Mogensen, A. B. of Djursholn, Sweden), this unit has found its primary acceptance in the sizing of wet or dry materials in the fine ranges. Climax has been working cooperatively with Mine and Smelter Supply Company, the United States licensee, on the adaptation of the sizer to obtain consistent recovery at a high tonnage rate on a — 3/8-in. separation. This was a new application for the sizer and opened up a whole new field of problems. Dr. Mogensen's machine utilizes the control of normal probability of falling particles and is designed to eliminate some of the undesirable features of vibrating screens mentioned earlier. The machine is light, compact, consumes less power than conventional screens and has a low noise level. PRINCIPLES Probability sizing is a process designed to allow solid particles to segregate with a high ratio of the materials reporting into their respective size fractions with a minimum amount of misplaced particles. Sizing is defined in this paper as segregation of dry solid particles into fractions of comparable sizes. Probability is usually estimated as the ratio of the number of ways an event might occur vs. the total number of allowable ways. The probability process described depends upon the fact that particles falling through a network will segregate across the sizing surface even though all openings are larger than the particles. The degree of segregation is dependent upon the particle size and the trajectory applied by the sizing network to each falling particle. Specifically, the process utilizes a maze made up of screen cloth to control the path of a particle in free fall as illustrated in Fig. 1. The usefulness of this probability sizing process is dependent upon the degree of efficiency of an effective maze. Primarily, a maze must be extremely flexible to meet the multi-faceted nature of solid particles and, at the same time, the degree of control must be reproducible so that a desired separation is predictable. Dr. Fredrik Mogensen has formulated a maze that is not only flexible and easily controlled, but, mote importantly, easily adaptable to a working machine.

THIS communication reports measurements of the densities of dilute liquid alloys of 0.1 and 0.5 pct Ag in Sn over temperature ranges of 170" and 210°C, respectively, above the melting point of pure tin (232°C). The work was earried out to provide accurate density data for some liquid diffusion studies performed by Davis.1 Densities were measured using a pycnometric technique established in this laboratory. Earlier papers2, 4 attest to the accuracy of ±0.05 pct and the reliability of the method. Tin, 99.999 pct pure, and silver 99.99 pct pure, were melted in a graphite crucible in a vacuum furnace and held at temperature for 10 hr to ensure homogenization. Ingots suitable for machining

It is generally recognized to date that a rational stability analysis of slopes and foundations in rock masses is a desirable but still rather remote goal of rock mechanics.1 In principle, a slope analysis is possible provided the original state of effective stress in the ground is known and the shear strength of the earth material can be clearly defined. In a macroscopically continuous earth medium such as soil, the two basic ingredients of the stability analysis in most cases can be assessed with sufficient approximation. A much less favorable situation exists when the slope is composed of a macroscopically discontinuous medium such as rock mass containing one or more sets of geological planar structures. In such a case, both the original effective stresses and the overall shear strength of the mass are much more difficult to determine. As for the former, it is only recently that certain calculation methods and solutions concerning the stress distribution2 and the seepage forces3 in a discontinuous medium have been proposed. As the strength behavior of the rock mass is concerned, much valuable effort has been made in recent years toward reaching a proper understanding of the phenomenon of rock mass failure under stress. Probably one of the most complete investigations of the problem to date has recently been made at the University of Illinois. The study resulted in establishing a first useful working hypothesis of the shear behavior of a regularly jointed rock mass, proposed by Patton in 1966.4 The main purpose of the work described in this chapter is to establish a more general framework for the shear behavior of rock mass, one that would be directly related to some basic rock parameters and would also

Fort?-six- two-grain bounduries were studied in doped tungsten 1amp wire that had been heated to 3450°K very vapidly. Back-reflection Laue photograms were taken of the grain boundary partners and solved, using a computer. The resulting distribution of large-grain orientations was analyzed. Rotational axes were calculatedfor each grain boundary pair. The axes of least rotation show an anisotropy of rolalional angle. WhILE the orientations of large grains in straight doped tungsten wire have been studied extensively, little has been done to characterize the boundary that separates them. Rosi.1 upon seeing the jagged interlocking boundary in doped tungsten wire. inferred that the grains should have a preferred orientation, and proved it. He interprets his data as indicative of a single ideal orientation—(531)— being parallel to the wire axis. Rieck2, 3 and Mannerkoski' have essentially confirmed this finding. Opinsky, Orehotsky, and Siegle argue that the data suggest that (211)—a plane-is parallel to the wire axis instead. This (211 ) contains the (531). and hence would appear to be a more general case.5 Ahlborn and wasserman6 report that their orientation data stretch from (110) through (531) to (311). This path is the locus of {211 Recently. Opinsky has suggested that the data can be interpreted as a series of ideal orientations that can be related by coincidence relationships to the (110) fiber texture. All these investigators have determined the orientations of the large grains by the back-reflection Laue technique, and they have all obtained similar results. Only Rieck5 as methodically looked at the large grains along a wire. He was apparently not concerned with the relationships of the large grains across their common boundary, but only with their individual orientations. This research was undertaken to fill this gap in the under standing of the mechanical properties of tungsten wire. Only the crystallographic aspects of the problem will be reported here. In addition, the large number of large-grain orientations, which was accumulated in this study. will also be analyzed. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUES All of the data were obtained from four pieces of the same 7-mil-diam General Electric tungsten lamp wire. Twelve-inch lengths of the cleaned wire were heated in vacuum by the flick of a switch to 90 pct of the amperes necessary for fusion (a temperature of approximately 3450°K) and held for 1 min. On the basis of other data. it is estimated that the rise time is of the order of 0.5 sec. The four pieces of wire could have come from anywhere within about 18 ft of wire. Consecutive segments of each piece of wire were mounted in bakelite and polished metallographically The polishing procedure followed that described by woods. "nly boundaries between two grains that each occupied the entire cross section of the wire were photographed and X-rayed. The metallographic sample was mounted accurately with respect to the X-ray unit. Steps were taken to read the films as accurately as possible with the conventional Greninger net. The data were then entered into computer programs that solve the Laue film by precisely the same techniques that are used in the solution of the film by means of the stereographic projection. The use of the computer has probably shifted the main source of error from the stereographic plot to the reading of the film. On the basis of several experiments, it is thought that the error associated with the entire process, from mounting the sample through the computer solution, is of the order of about one-half degree. The output of the computer is the direction cosines of the fiducial direction (the wire axis) and the locations of the three cube axes. The former data were used to calculate the differences in orientation between the two grain boundary partners, and the latter were used in the calculation of the rotational axes that could bring the two grains

At the Orieco mine quartz veins carrying sulphides were localized in parts of an extensive fault zone in the Mathinna Beds during late Middle Palaeozoic mineralization.These deposits were subsequently exposed, and oxidation of the sulphides by percolating groundwaters resulted in the formation of gossans at the surface, and replacement close to the permanent water table of the more soluble sulphides by copper sulphides (chalcocite, coveIlite). A restricted zone containing copper oxides (cuprite, tenorite), copper carbonates (malachite, azurite), iron arsenates (scorodite, pharmacosiderite) and possibly rare copper sulphates occurred above the water table.The renewed oxidation of these deposits following mine development has been facilitated by the ready circulation of air and water combined with the formation of large free surfaces ideal for evaporation of aqueous solutions. Under these new conditions of high initial sulphate concentration, low pH, and relatively high Eh, the previously formed mineral assemblage is unstable and numerous Cu (Fe,Zn)-sulphates and Fe (Cu,Pb)-arsenates are presently forming in fractures in the fault zone and on the adit and stope surfaces for some considerable distance from the Sulphide-rich ore shoots. The observed spatial sequence of the major sulphates with respect to the sulphide-rich zones (Le. chalcanthite-antleritebrochantite and langite) is consistent with decreasing sulphate concentration and increasing pH away from the oxidizing sulphides.

Evidence has been found for a (010)a?(111)B[102]a /,11[341]/B crystallographic relationship between the monoclinic a and B phases of plutonium during the a?B transformation. The results of an X-ray diffraction study, where [010] fiber textured a samples were used in the absence of suitable single crystals indicate that the (OIO)a planes become (111)B planes upon transformation under near-equilibrium conditions. The transformation strain along the fiber axis, which was the [010] direction, was measured dila-tomekically; the measured 8.5 pct expansion compares favorably with the 8.44 pct expansion in the in-terplanar spacing represented by the (010)a?(111)B relationship. From plots of the atom positions in each of the related planes, a correspondence was deduced between the [102]a, direction and the [341]B direction. Further analysis of the two lattice structures in the light of this relationship revealed a rotation about the [102] direction of 1 deg 43 min and a slight shearing in this same direction of about 30 min. THIS paper discusses the (B crystal structure of plutonium and the orientation relationship existing between the monoclinic a and B phases during the a?ß transformation. The kinetics of the a?ß and (3 — a transformations have received extensive consideration, and because of the crystallographic complexity of these phases, the question of the mechanisms by which these transformations occur is especially intriguing. Nelson and Shyne1 evaluated the existing experimental evidence and concluded, from the indirect evidence available, that both the ß ? a and a ? ß transformations occur by a martensitic process. Their data reveal the anisotropic nature of these transformations which suggests the existence of specific crystallographic relationships between the parent and product phases. In this paper, we are concerned with the confirmation of the existence of such a relationship resulting from the a ? ß transformation and the derivation of the crystallographic details necessary to specify it. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS X-ray diffraction and dilatometric data were obtained from samples of a plutonium having a [010] fiber texture. These cylindrical specimens, approximately 1 cm in diam, were prepared by transforming the ß phase to a under the influence of a uniaxially applied compressive load.' The [0l0] direction is parallel to the direction of applied stress; it is also perpendicular to the (010) planes. This correspondence between the plane normal and the direction having the same indices is, in the monoclinic a plutonium structure, restricted solely to this (010)[010] combination. Such a specimen was mounted in an evacuated, elevated temperature specimen holder on an X-ray dif-fractometer so that the diffracting surface was perpendicular to the fiber axis. The a diffraction pattern, Fig. 1, taken at about 115ºC, revealed the predominance of the (020) reflection. This monoclinic, P 21/rn space group yields no (0k0) reflections when k is odd. The temperature was raised slowly to 160°C to effect the complete transformation to the phase; then it was lowered to 120°C so that a diffraction pattern of the ß could be obtained near the a = ß equilibrium temperature for direct comparison with the a at the same temperature. Heats of high purity iron containing 3.1 pct Si and be -tween 0.0003 and 0.0295 pct N were prepared by vacuum melting ad then pouring while in a nitrogen atmosphere with the pressure between 0 and 90 psi. Strip from a heat with 0.0184 pct N underwent complete secondary recrystallization during the final anneal. Heats with less nitrogen had too few Si3N4 particles to restrain normal grain growth, and the heat with higher nitrogen had too many particles to allow complete secondary recrystallization. In the hot-rolled structure, Si3N4 precipitates only at the grain boundaries, with the consequence that annealing after hot-rolling diminishes the ability to subsequently undergo secondary recrystallization. In contrast to this behavior, ALNprecipitates uniformly in the hot-rolled structure. Under 1 atm of nitrogen, Si3N, in 3.1 pct Si-Fe dissociates between 900" and 950°C; the solubility of nitrogen increases from 0.0010 pct at 900" to 0.0030 pct at 1200°C. The solubility of nitrogen in Si-Fe has been the subject of many investigations. Corney and Turkdogan1 heated a 2.83 pct Si alloy in nitrogen and found the solubility, under 1 atrn of nitrogen, to be 0.0019 pct at 900°C. They claimed that Si3N4 did not form in the alloy above 705°C in 1 atrn of nitrogen. Fryxell et al.2 heated samples of 3.25 pct Si-Fe containing 0.0025 pct N over a range of temperatures and then analyzed for total nitrogen by vacuum fusion and for nitrogen in solution by a modified Kjeldahl technique. At 900°C, they reported the solubility of nitrogen in equilibrium with Si3N4 to be 0.0011 pct. pearce9 found the solubility of nitrogen at 900°C under 0.95 atrn of nitrogen to be 0.0017 pct in a 3.06 pct Si alloy. He reported that Si3N4 does not form above 770°C in 1 atrn of nitrogen. Although internal friction measurements have given somewhat higher values for the solubility,4-6 if the solubility of nitrogen is as low as has been reported by most investigators, and if Si3N4 is stable up to at least 945°C at 1 atrn pressure of nitrogen as reported by Seybolt,7 a small amount of nitrogen in properly processed Si-Fe should be effective in promoting secondary recrystallization. The requirement is that in the final heat treatment there be enough small, well-dispersed particles of Si3N4 to restrain normal grain growth. Fast8 has obtained secondary recrystallization by nitriding high-purity 3 pct Si-Fe after hot-rolling to a thickness of 0.118 in., followed by processing to 0.012 in., and annealing. A large amount of nitrogen, 0.076 pct. was introduced during the nitriding heat treatment, but he has since reported9 that "a few hundredths of a percent" is sufficient. Small amounts of aluminum10 or vanadium" nitride are capable of promoting secondary recrystallization. Heats containing as little as 0.010 pct A1 or 0.042 pct V and from 0.006 to 0.009 pct N underwent complete secondary recrystallization at final gage, whereas heats with lesser amounts of aluminum or vanadium did not.l2 To be reported is the behavior of nitrogen in high-purity 3.1 pct Si-Fe, and the relation of this behavior to the ability to undergo secondary recrystallization. PROCEDURE Ingots weighing 1 lb were made by vacuum melting high-purity electrolytic iron (A104, Glidden Co.) and high-purity silicon (Monsanto Co.). The latter was used in preference to ferrosilicon to insure a low aluminum content. The design of the melting furnace permitted pouring with the furnace atmosphere either below or above atmospheric pressure. Accordingly, at the completion of melting, nitrogen was admitted to the desired pressure and the heat then immediately poured. The ingots were sound, with no indication of porosity. In Table I are listed the heats investigated, the nitrogen pressure at pour, and the nitrogen and oxygen contents as determined by vacuum fusion with a platinum bath at 1850°C, a procedure which insures measurement of the total nitrogen.13 In addition, all heats contained 3.1 pct Si and not more than 0.002 pct C, 0.003 pct S or 0.005 pct Al. It was subsequently found that the quantity of nitrogen contained in the heats in Table I does not necessarily represent that obtained under equilibrium conditions. For example, the ingot poured immediately after 1 atrn of nitrogen was admitted to the chamber contained 0.0093 pct N, whereas an ingot poured 3 min after the nitrogen was admitted contained 0.021 pct N and another poured after a 6-min delay contained 0.029 pct N. While some bleeding of the hot top occurred in the latter instance, the ingot when examined in cross section appeared sound. The ingots were heated to 1325°C in hydrogen and rapidly rolled to 0.080 in. in 3 passes. The roll speed of the final pass was reduced so as to increase the quenching effect of the rolls. The hot-rolled pieces were processed both as-hot-rolled and after heating for 3 min at 900°C in hydrogen. After cold-rolling to 0.026 in., the strips were heated for 2 min at 900°C in hydrogen, then cold-rolled to the final gage of 0.012 in. Process-oriented experiments on the use of coal as an adsorbent for certain soluble components of sewage are described. The capacity of Canadian coals for these components was less than 0.1 per cent by weight for the highest concentration at which these components could be expected to be found in domestic sewage. This is much less than values reported in the past. A pronounced selectivity between components was observed. Experiments on bacteria removal in beds of coal, regeneration of spent coal to restore adsorption capacity and COD contributions of coal are reported in the paper. The simple application of coal as an adsorbent does not seem promising.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Kennecott Copper Corp., and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology are cooperating on a research project to improve extraction of copper from previously leached waste dumps that are in part compacted and impervious to leach solutions. The field work is being done at the "J" leach dump, Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex. The laboratory percolation leaching tests were made at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center on drill core samples from the "J" dump to determine how much copper might be leached if permeability could be restored by explosive heaving or other means. The core samples from nine drill holes on "J" dump contained from 0.06 to 0.14 percent copper. Copper extractions ranging from 15 to 3 percent were obtained in 75 days by percolation leaching of minus-1-inch material with dilute sulfuric acid. The tests results indicate that about 2'7 percent of the copper remaining in the "J" dump could be extracted under ideal leaching conditions.

During World War II mining machinery manufacturers were limited in the development of their product improvement programs. Following the war, however, the ideas and intentions of both the users and manufacturers of mining equipment became evident. The Coal Industry launched a series of events which indicated their determination to rise to the economic challenge of developing profitable machines which would eliminate the out-dated and back-breaking methods of mining previously used. Two major technological advances were developed as a result of the ambitious goals forecast by the Coal Industry: 1. Coal mining was going "off-track" and concentrated mining operations were to follow in rapid succession. 2. Carbide tools provided the remaining missing contribution to another technological breakthrough....Continuous Mining. Little did the inventors realize the significance of the misnomer they created because twenty-five years later the industry is still striving to secure the results implied by the meaning of the word...."Continuous". Nevertheless, all major manufacturers embarked on programs in an attempt to compete for recognition in this new mechanized-mining endeavor Eventually in 1950 there were three types of boring machines and two types of ripping machines being manufactured. Mining Speed was the desired goal.

Structures produced upon solidification of the eu-tectic composition (33 wt pct Cu) aluminum copper alloy have been examined as a function of freezing rate dfs /d? , the rate of change of fraction solid (fs) with time (8). Slow (dfs/d? = 0.0016 sec-1), intermediate (dfs/d? = 0.02 sec-1) and rapid (dfs/d? = 0.4 to 7.30 sec-1) freezing rates were used. The lamellar Al-Cual2 eutectic is arranged in the form of rod-shaped colonies at rapid freezing rates. The colonies are aligned parallel to the direction of heat flow, whereas the lamellae within the colonies are aligned at various angles, as high as 90 deg, to the direction of heat flow. The colony spacing (C) is proportional to the square root of inverse freezihg rate. The relationship is C = 15.5(dfs/d?)-1/2 where C is in µ and 8 is in sec. The ratio of colony spacing to lamellar spacing is greater than 20.0 and increases with a decrease in the freezing rate. A duplex dendritic structure is produced at intermediate freezing rates. A fine lamellar eutectic is arranged within the dendrites (exhibiting side branches at an angle close to 60 deg from the main stem) and a coarse irregular eutectic appears in the interdendritic regions. The duplex eutectic structure is also produced at slow freezing rates. However, at slow freezing rates there is a Platelat of CuAl2, along the center of the main stem of each dendrite and the other lamellae are arranged perpendicular to the central platelet. THE eutectic between CuA12 and a! aluminum has been reported to freeze in a lamellar form by several workers.'-3 chadwick4 has measured the interlamel-lar spacing as a function of growth rate. Kraft and Albright2 have reported on irregularities in the lamellar structures, and have proposed growth models which account for the formation of faults during solidification. In certain instances the lamellar eutectic has been found to exist in colonies. The colony formation315 has been attributed to the breakdown of a planar liquid-solid interface due to rejection of impurities. The aim of the present work is to study the structures produced from the eutectic aluminum-copper alloy under relatively fast solidification rates, such as encountered in casting and welding operations. The solid-liquid interface presumably remains planar under conditions of slow unidirectional freezing which produce lamellae aligned parallel to the direction of heat flow. The local growth velocities are the same over the entire interface and are equal to the rate of growth of the all-solid region. The spacing between the eutectic lamellae is inversely proportional to the square root of the growth rate of the all-solid region. Under the freezing conditions used in the present study, the solid-liquid interface is cellular or dendritic and the local growth velocities are different in the different regions of the interface. The relationship between the growth rate of the all solid region and the local growth velocities varies with the location and the shape of the interface. The growth rate of the all-solid region is, therefore, an inadequate parameter to describe the eutectic micro-structures which depend upon the local growth velocities. For this reason the structures have been examined as a function of freezing rate, dfs/d?, where fs is the fraction solidified at time 0. The freezing rate was varied by a factor of 4000. The relationship between the freezing rate, dfs/d?, and the growth velocit of the all solid region depends upon the specimen geometry and the shape of the interface. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The A1-33 pct Cu alloy used throughout this study was made in an induction furnace, using electrolytic copper and aluminum of commercial purity (99.7 pct), the primary impurities being silicon (0.12 pct), iron (0.14 pct), and zinc (0.02 pct). Three ranges of freezing rates were investigated: 1) A spectrum of rapid freezing rates (ranging from 0.40 to 7.30 sec-1) was obtained in arc deposits made on 2-in. thick cast plates of the eutectic alloy. The arc was operated at constant power and was made to travel at constant velocity on the surface of the plate that was in contact with the chill surface during solidification. The pool of liquid metal formed under the moving tungsten arc solidified rapidly by heat extraction through the unmelted plate. Conditions of unidirectional heat flow were achieved near the fusion zone interface, especially in the center of the arc deposits. The great advantage of the arc technique is that rapid cooling and freezing rates can be varied in a qualitative way. The correlation between the arc parameters and the solidification rate is given by the following relationship:6-8
