Percolation irrigation of low-grade quartz feldspar porphyry ore with pH 2.0 H2SO4 at 510 litres/m2/day using particle sizes 1.7 - 6.7 mm in columns measuring 5 cm dia × 126 cm long was used to study effects of interrupted irrigation ('rest' periods) on metal ion release and leaching bacteria. Copper tenors increased approximately 16 fold and bacterial iron oxidation activity three fold following a 14 day 'rest'. A linear relationship between copper tenor and bacterial activity demonstrated that this experimental system was effective for quantitative studies of bacterial leaching in ore colums.

Interest in the western oil shales of the US began in about 1908, with the first retort in Colorado constructed in 1917. The most successful early developments were near Elko, NV, where the Catlin Shale Products Co. produced more than 1.9 dam3 (12 000 bbl) of shale oil during 1920-1924 and at Rulison, CO, where a US government operation produced about 570 in 3 (3 600 bbl) of shale oil during 1926-1929. Plentiful low-cost crude oil was developed about this time and shale oil was of little or no interest until after World War II. From 1944 to about 1972, several companies, and the US government, operated shale oil mines and recovery plants in Colorado. While technical successes were achieved and an estimated 40-56 clam' (250 000-350 000 bbl) of shale oil were produced, economics were not favorable and commercial production was not achieved. In recent years domestic production of crude oil supplies has not kept pace with US consumption. The growing shortfall has been met with imports. The cost of imported oil has continued to escalate and increased US dependence on petroleum imports are national concerns, because of the negative impact on US balance of payments and an increasing dependence on other nations for US energy needs. In 1978, petroleum imports equaled about 44% of demand, up from 23% in 1970, but down from 48% in 1977 because of availability of Alaskan North Slope crude oil. Reduced domestic consumption and other factors have reduced current imports to about 40-45% of de¬wand-but at ever increasing cost. The growing shortage of crude petroleum and its increasing cost have resulted in renewed worldwide interest in oil shales. In the past, the main obstacle to oil shale development (progress toward commercial production) has been economics-shale oil cost too much to develop and thus could not compete with conventional petroleum crudes. Even with today's inflated energy prices, some experts say the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale is, at best, marginally economic. The Anaconda Copper Company reportedly reached an exclusive agreement with Cook Inlet Region, Inc., to explore 24 million acres in south-central Alaska and to share equally with Cook the proceeds of any mineral discovery. According to an Anaconda geologist, "the company is anticipating, based on geologic testing, that it will find significant deposits of copper, lead, and zinc. There is also evidence of the presence of precious metals such as silver and gold, and also strong evidence of strategic minerals such as chrome, platinum, tin, and nickel." Cook Inlet Region, Inc., is owned by 6,500 Alaskan natives. Chile, which has a growing, free-market economy under President Pinochet, reportedly will no longer require companies to obtain prior governmental approval for the exploration and development of new mines.

"The detection and quantification of the degree of weathering is an important aspect of coal exploration and mining. Tests for weathering which are suitable for the exploration camp should be fast, simple, and require minimal equipment and operator expertise. In this study, two tests which fulfill these requirements were evaluated using samples of Western Canadian coals. These tests, one based on the pH of a coal slurry and the other on the flotation of coal in a water/diesel oil mixture, do not appear to give consistent results and are not recommended as ideal weathering parameters.IntroductionThe weathering of coal results in a deterioration of those properties which render it suitable for use in industrial processes. Consequently, the detection and quantification of the degree of weathering is an important aspect of exploration and mining. Frequently, decisions related to the depth of the weathered zone must be made at the exploration camp and, therefore, tests for weathering which are fast, and require relatively inexpensive and portable equipment and minimal operator experience, would be very useful. The aim of the study reported here was to evaluate two tests used by U. S. Steel Corp. to detect coal weathering and which satisfy the requirements for use in an exploration camp. The study is a continuation of a more extensive examination of the detection of coal weathering by various methods, reported elsewhere (Marchioni, in press)."

The ElectroSlurry™ electrowinning concept has been incorporated into a process flowsheet for recovering copper from smelter flue dusts. The process has averaged 96% recovery of the copper as high-grade electrowon cathode, while at the same time removing a majority of the impurities that degrade drawn copper as a result of recycling flue dust and liberator cathodes. The dust is processed through several stages consisting of leaching, copper precipitation, ElectroSlurry electrowinning, and waste liquor treatment. The process may be integrated into a smelter operation and become an effective and feasible means of maintaining good product purity.

INTRODUCTION Standards limiting the annual exposure of United States uranium miners to radon daughters were established in 1967 at 12 Working-Level-Months (WLM). The standard was reduced by a factor of three, to 4 WLM, in 1971. Currently, the standard is again being examined to determine if it should be changed. Since 1967, Union Carbide has calculated individual monthly exposures in company and contract-operated mines located on the Colorado Plateau. Although it has been possible, by extensive ventilation control measures and accurate routine sampling, to meet the current exposure standard, there are many miners whose exposures closely approach the 4 WLM standard for any given year. However, it was noted that for miners who work for any extended period of years the [average] exposure was much less than the standard. The primary purpose of this paper is to show that, in effect, any annual exposure standard to radon daughters results in a long-term exposure considerably below that standard. Further, most miners, due to their job assignments and/or employment habits, only receive a small fraction of the standard. HISTORY OF EXPOSURE STANDARDS Prior to 1967, radiation protection in uranium mines was fundamentally based on a radon daughter concentration guide. In 1960, the American Standards Association published mine and mill radiation protection standards (ASA-1960). The Colorado Department of Mines, in 1961, adoped a standard which followed the ASA Standard and provided that if concentrations exceeded 10 Working Levels (WL), the area was to be shut down until corrective action was taken; if between 3 and 10 WL, corrective action was to be initiated; between 1 and 3, additional samples were to be taken and individual exposures evaluated; and if below 1 WL, conditions were considered to be controlled. In 1967, the U.S. Department of Labor issued the first exposure standard which called originally for limiting annual exposures to 3.6 WLM but which was later changed to 12 WLM. The complicated regulatory developments leading to this standard have been described elsewhere (Beverly-1969, Rock & Walker-1970). Effective July 1, 1971, this exposure standard was lowered to 4 WLM per year, which is the current standard. Over the past year, there has been speculation about the potential risk to uranium miners working at the present standard. A recent NIOSH Study Group Report (NIOSH-1980) concluded: "There is also strong evidence that a substantial risk extends to and below 120 WLM of exposure." The 120 WLM corresponds to a miner working in uranium mines for 30 years, a rare occurrence, at an exposure rate of 4 WLM per year, an even rarer occurrence. On the other hand, the General Accounting Office, in a recent Report to the Congress (GAO-1981), was very critical of reports by NIOSH on general low-level radiation risks. The GAO recognized that”...important questions remain unanswered about the cancer risks of low-level ionizing radiation exposure;" and recommended that Congress enact legislation giving statutory authority to an interagency committee to coordinate Federal research on health effects of ionizing radiation exposure. The International Commission on Radiation Protection at its March, 1980 meeting recommended limiting the inhalation of radon daughters to 0.02 J per year, equivalent to 0.4 WL, which on an annual basis would be 4.8 WLM and noted it is common to reduce this figure by 20% for allowance in the case of uranium miners for external and/or dust exposure(Sowby-1980). This is essentially equal to the present standard of 4 WLM. As earlier uranium miner exposure studies are reevaluated, and as new studies are conducted, it is important that the relationship between regulatory standards and the resulting actual exposures be recognized. UNION CARBIDE URANIUM MINING EXPERIENCE Union Carbide started mining Colorado Plateau uranium-vanadium ores in the late 1920s for the contained vanadium values. In the early 1950s, the Atomic Energy Commission contracted Union Carbide to produce uranium at mills located in Uravan and Rifle, Colorado. The company now has over fifty years of mining experience in the area. Some mines are operated as company mines and others are operated by private mining companies under a contractual arrangement. Ventilation, sampling, and exposure calculations are carried out the same in contract mines as in company-operated mines. Data presented in this report do not differentiate between company or contract employees and include all employees who worked underground any portion of a year in Union Carbide mines from 1967 through 1980. At the peak of uranium mining activities in 1970, there were 577 miners employed at year end (285 company employees and 292 contract) and 52 mines in operation (8 company-operated and 44 contract mines). Contract mines varied from two-man operations up to 15 employees. Company mines were generally the larger operations and employed from 20 to 100 miners.

Formation of either sodium jarosite or lead jarosite from concentrated chloride solutions containing small concentrations of sulphate has been demonstrated. Sodium jarosite is precipitated at 95-100°C from FeC13-FeCI2-NaCI-PbCI2 solutions to which was added Na2SO4 or Li2SO4 in amounts greater than 0.05 M. In the absence of alkali metal ions capable of forming jarosites, lead jarosite was precipitated from either FeCI3-PbCI2 or FeCI3-FeCI2-LiCI-PbCI2 solutions to which had been added small amounts of sulphate. Many of the factors affecting jarosite precipitation from chloride solution have been elucidated, and the most critical were sulphate concentration and initial pH. Concentrations of HCI in excess of O. I M essentially suppressed the production of jarosite in chloride media. Alkali jarosite, precipitated in the presence of dissolved lead, incorporates a small amount of this metal into the alkali jarosite lattice. Small but significant amounts of copper can also be incorporated into alkali jarosite and the amount is further increased in the presence of lead. Other divalent base metals such as Zn, Cd or Ni are not significantly precipitated. Sulphate control in either FeCI3 or FeCl3-NaCI leaching systems could likely be maintained by jarosite precipitation provided that the acid concentration of the solution was low.

"This paper discusses the changing nature of reserve/consumption ratios, using data from Canadian operations and focussing particularly on copper.IntroductionStudies in world metal consumption and world metal reserves are done regularly by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Raw Materials, and other institutions. Formerly, on the basis of these data, the following figures were calculated:• a static lifetime of reserves-reserves at year end divided by the consumption of the previous year;• a semidynamic lifetime of reserves-reserves at year assumed constant growth rate.These figures were severely criticized because they were purely theoretical and did not consider the availability of the raw materials.Recent practice is to calculate reserve/consumption ratios (R/C ratios) for periods(1) or for different years(2,3) and to interpret the trend. For base metals, these R/C ratios are increasing (Table 1). This had led to the conclusion that today the relative availability of base metal reserves has increased as compared to 10 or 15 years ago(4,5) As there are normally numerous deposits for each commodity, the anticipated production rates of deposits are irrelevant to this conclusion as long as the statistical distribution of possible production rates does not change significantly.The above conclusion is only justified if the quality and the nature of the data base remain the same. This is certainly the case for the consumption data. It is also assumed for the quality of the reserve figures, which usually take into account only proven and probable reserves. For the nature of the reserve figures, however, this does not seem to be true.Undoubtedly, the reserves increased in absolute terms between 1966 and 1978. To put the absolute reserve figures into perspective, it is common, as said above, to compare them with the mine production, which increased in the free world between 1966 and 1978; e.g. for copper by 40%, for Pb by 17% and for zinc by 36%. However, the reserves are also influenced by other factors, such as average size of the mines, changes in the grade of the mined ore, price-to-cost relationships and the like.The purpose of this paper is to examine the nature of the reserve figures in more detail. Because the completeness of mining data published in Canada is rather exceptional, Canadian .data serve as an example and it is assumed that the conclusions can be extrapolated to other mining countries or at least to those with free market systems."

Martin County Coal Corporation's operations are located on Wolf Creek in Martin County in the eastern part of Kentucky. The mining complex was started in 1971 and has grown to a 2.273 Mt/a steam coal operation. All of the production goes to Duke Power Company's Belews Creek electric generating station in North Carolina. Production comes from four seams that are mined by deep and surface mining methods. Surface mining accounts for 55% of the production and the remainder comes from 2 underground mines. Continuous miners are used exclusively underground. The preparation plant was originally designed to take coal at the rate of 907 Mt/h but that has gradually been increased to 1134 Mt/h. Other cleaning equipment includes Daniels DMS vessels, Model 77 Deister tables, 355.4-mm R. & S. Hydro- cyclones, Krebs 254-m classifying cyclones, Daniels froth cells and in 1980, 3 Krebs 508-mm heavy media cyclones were added to recover some lost and misplaced material. CMI centrifugaldryers and a Hey1 & Patterson size 100 thermal dryer are also part of the coal preparation equipment.

The Department of Thoracic Surgery and Pathology at the Toronto General Hospital have had a long standing interest in the early detection and treatment of carcinoma of the lung. Our initial experience was with a population at risk due to a prolonged period of cigarette smoking. More recently our efforts have turned to industrial exposure, specifically in the nickel and uranium industries. [Initial Screening Project] (1) For a three year period 1963 to 1966 a cytology screening program was carried out through the Out-Patient Department. The study was limited to cigarette smokers over 40 in age. A total of 1586 patients were examined. Of the sputa collected, the classification is seen in Table 1. There were 11 malignant sputa present. Added to this number were 25 patients with symptoms, normal chest X-rays, but malignant cells on cytology, and a further 5 patients in whom an abnormality (eventually proven non-malignant) showed on X-ray, and sputum showed malignancy which was radio logically occult. (Table II). This gave a total of 41 patients with malignant sputum who were evaluated between 1960 and 1966. The clinical course of these patients is seen in Table III. Only 19 of 41 patients had localization and treatment of their tumour during that study period and this low rate of localization attests to the technical difficulties endoscopy in that day presented. The method of localization was as follows: a) 6 patients showed an area of segmental pneumonitis somewhere in this time period b) Using the rigid bronchoscope localized the tumour in 9. This was proven by direct biopsy, and frequently required more than one bronchoscopy over a prolonged time period. c) bronchograms and tomograms showed abnormalities in 5 patients. Of these 19 patients, 5 were treated by radiotherapy because of general condition or refusal of surgery. Three of the irradiated patients died of recurrent cancer within three years. The other two died within one year of unrelated disease. Fourteen patients underwent resection, with one operative mortality. At pathology, the tumours were "in situ" in 6 and invasive in 13. There was no evidence of nodal spread. When last followed up in 1979, there were no cases of recurrent tumour and no cases of second lung primary tumours. Similar experiences have been reported from the Mayo Clinic (2), Johns Hopkins (3) and Memorial Hospitals (4). Early detection of radiologically occult tumours which are in situ or minimally invasive has given uniformly good results. There have been no deaths from recurrent or metastatic cancer in surgically resected patients, and only one second primary tumour has been detected. Interestingly, the Hopkins group reports that 5 patients with Stage I squamous cell tumours refused operation. One refused any treatment and died of disease at 12 months. Three were radiated, and were alive from 14-38 months post-treatment, all with evidence of recurrent disease. [Sudbury Sintering Plant Study](5) From 1948 to 1963 an open travelling-grate sintering process was employed to convert nickel sulfide to nickel oxide at an International Nickel Company operation. The environment in this plant was particularly dusty and filled with fumes. It became apparent by 1969 that the incidence of bronchogenic carcinoma was markedly increased in workers from this plant. A concerted effort was made to track down all workmen with this exposure. During 1973 and 1974, 268 men were studied. Chest radiographs were done and showed no mass lesions. Sputum was collected on three consecutive days and analyzed. There were 12 men with malignant sputum, all of the squamous cell variety. Two refused any investigation, one presenting 31/2 years later with extensive hronchogenic carcinoma, and the other 5 years later with extensive carcinoma of the maxillary sinus. In the remaining ten patients careful rhinolaryngeal examination as well as a detailed bronchoscopy, involving examination, brushings and biopsy of all pulmonary segments was carried out. One patient was found to have laryngeal carcinoma and was treated by radiation. In nine patients, the malignancy was localized to the lung, leading to six lobectomies, two pneumonectomies and one sleeve lobectomy at operation. However, the follow-up in these cases suggests a different biological behaviour with these industrially related tumours. While no tumour has recurred locally, one patient has died of metastatic cancer and two patients have developed second and one patient a third pulmonary primary cancer. However, survival has still been much better than wits radiographically manifest lung cancer. As the search for new sources of energy and minerals leads to more remote areas of the country - and the world - the need to plan for adequate housing and community facilities for the construction and operations workforces and their families takes on an importance equal to the mining and processing facilities themselves. A corollary to the need for planning is the increasingly crucial need for development companies to devise effective strategies for dealing with the local communities impacted by these projects. Experience has amply demonstrated the high price to be paid for failure to learn this lesson, a price measured in lost productivity, confrontation with local communities, labor turnover, mental health and other social and eocnomic problems. In Sweetwater, Wyoming, a new industrial activity caused the population to double from 18,000 to 36,000 between 1970 and 1974. During that period industrial productivity fell 25 to 40 percent, cost overruns on the principal new industrial facility exceeded 33 percent, annual employee turnover rates climbed above 100 percent, the local mental health clinic workload increased nine times and complaints to the local law enforcement agency increased 60 percent.

The primary objective of dosimetric modelling for the inhalation of radon daughters is the evaluation of the dose distribution and of the mean dose to sensitive cells or target tissues in the respiratory tract which are assumed to be responsible for the initiation of lung cancer. The results of such dosimetric models are influencing the practice of radiation protection in a twofold manner: Firstly, they enable us to identify appropriate operational quantities for air monitoring and for the surveillance of individual exposures to radon daughters. Secondly, they can be used to derive secondary and operational limits for these radionuclides from the basic dose limits. The dose to target tissues in the lung from inhaled radon daughters depends on various physical and biological parameters: The unattached fraction of daughter atoms, the AMAD of the carrier aerosol for attached atoms, the geometry of the respiratory airways, the breathing conditions, the parameters for the retention and translocation of daughter atoms in the different lung regions, and the location of the target cells or target tissues, respectively. Therefore, dosimetric modelling for radon daughters has to include a sensitivity analysis showing the influence of these parameters. To meet these objectives we have recently described in a comprehensive report an improved dosimetric model for the inhalation of 222Rn, 22ORn and their short lived daughters (Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980). In the following this model is shortly described and the main results are summarized. DOSIMETRIC MODEL [Model Structure]. For the geometry of the bronchial airways the model A of Weibel (1963) was used. Each bronchial generation i (i =0.1 .... 16) was considered as a separate compartment i, for which the following transfer pathways for radon daughter atoms were taken into account (see fig. 1): (1) the uptake by deposition (deposition probability wi); (2) the translocation by ciliary clearance (rate constant [A]i); (3) the transfer to blood by diffusion through the bronchial epithelium (rate constant [A]b). To distinguish between attached (Index a) and free (index f) daughter atoms each bronchial generation was divided in two subcompartments (i.a and if) with a transfer rate constant [a]s (ia- if) characterizing the desorption or dissolution rate of attached atoms in the mucus fluid. Thus for daughter atoms primarily deposited in attached form the transfer to blood is a twostep process with the rate constants [a]s and [A]b which were assumed to be independent of the generation number i. [Deposition]. The deposition probabilities wi in each bronchial generation were calculated on the basis of the laminar diffusion model of Gormley et al. (1949); however the deposition in the upper airways was corrected for turbulent air flow, taking into account the results of our deposition experiments (Martin et al., 1972). Figure 2 shows the resulting deposition probabilities per unit surface area of the bronchial generations for nose breathing at a rate of 20 1/min. The values for attached daughter atoms refer to an AMAD of 0.2 - 0.3 µm ([O]g =3) for the carrier aerosol; the deposition values for free atoms were derived with a diffusion coefficient of 0.05 cm2/s, assuming a prefiltration of 50% in the naseopharyngeal region.

To help maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines developed a mathematical model that describes acidic ferric sulfate leaching of copper from sulfide ores. The leaching model can aid in maximizing minerals and metals recovery from primary sources by giving operators and management a better understanding of the copper leaching process. This will aid in improving dump leaching operations. The model is based on a steady-state approximation of the continuity equation for diffusion of ferric ions in the rock pores and the intrinsic leaching kinetics of the various sulfide mineral particles. Ore characteristics included in the model were ore particle-size distribution, particle shape, grade, mineral content, mineral particle size, porosity, and tortuosity. The continuity equation was used with ferric ion concentration gradients and a fixed value for the diffusion coefficient. Except for effective diffusivity, each of these factors was either measured experimentally or estimated from theoretical considerations. The effective diffusivities were determined by fitting calculated leaching curves with experimental leaching data. Vertical variations in leach solution composition and temperature within a dump are not considered in this model. The model accurately predicted copper extractions for several large-scale tests during nearly 500 days of leaching.

Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the US. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and air- ways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the best of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof because the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight movements that are frequently hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support.

"The Volvo BM 861 U articulated truck is one of the few underground diesel units manufactured by an organization which shares the same corporate roof as the engine manufacturer. As a consequence, the unit has provided an opportunity for the characteristics of the entire system- turbocharged aftercooled engine, transmission and exhaust scrubber- to interact to minimize emission levels. The performance of the components of the system, as evaluated by full-scale dynamometer testing, is summarized. The over-all effect of the various innovations was a 38% reduction in the recommended ventilation level over that of the bare engine.IntroductionThe Mining Research Laboratories of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada is required, as part o f the certification service of the Canadian Explosive Atmosphere s Laboratory, to test the exhaust emissions of diesel engines, and to recommend appropriate amounts of fresh ventilating air to minimize the risks to health of underground personnel working with, or in the vicinity of, such diesel engines. Volvo BM AB of Sweden made application for the certification of the BM 861 U truck during a period in which EMR personnel were engaged in a number of research projects concerned with improving the environment in dieselized mines. One such avenue of research was the venturi or high-energy scrubber; as the BM 861 U was equipped with this type of scrubber , EMR and Volvo BM agreed to cooperate in a considerably more extensive investigation than would be normal for a certification application. The outcome of some of this research is summarized in this paper."
