The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed engineering and economic analyses on 130 domestic phosphate mines and deposits, all containing demonstrated resources, of which 73 are in the Southeastern states of Florida and North Carolina, to determine the domestic availability of phosphate rock. Of the total domestic resources studied (6.4 billion tons of recoverable rock) over 60 percent is found in these two Southeastern states. At an estimated cost of $30 per ton, in January 1981 dollars, approximately 1 billion tons of rock is potentially recoverable from Southeastern deposits, increasing to 3 billion tons at $45. In addition, there is nearly 6 billion tons of recoverable rock at the inferred level (some presently unmineable) in Florida and Georgia.

This is a study of the impact of cyanide from mining waste on riparian communities, primarily vegetation, near Whitewood Creek, down-stream from Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. Cyanide is used in gold processing and the effluent, until fairly recently, was discharged directly into Gold Run Creek which empties into Whitewood Creek. Vegetation, soil, and water were collected from four different sites over a six month period, and samples tested for cyanide concentration. Data indicate a relationship between cyanide in soil and its uptake by certain plants, also, that the Homestake cleanup effort has made the stream viable again.

The predominant methods for mining coal in the USA are room and pillar and longwall. Approximately 95 percent of the coal is mined by room and pillar and 5 percent by longwall. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has an ongoing program to improve the rate, quality, and cost effectiveness of stabilizing the roof for both of these mining systems. In room and pillar mining, the installation of permanent roof support is often the task which paces the system operation, and it thus controls the level of production achieved during any mining shift. Two automatic roof bolt insertion equipment developments are discussed, as well as a flexible drill for operation in thinner seams. Progress will be reported on under- ground trials of a particular flexible drill which has been combined with a bolt inserter to form a compact, reliable module for retrofitting to continuous mining machines. In longwall mining, the use of hydraulic supports on the working face provides roof stability. The DOE has several trials ongoing with shield- type supports in difficult strata conditions which are described, as well as a co-funded project with the Bureau of Mines on a resin injection remedial method for consolidating a shear zone at one site. A project to improve the match of strata conditions to shield design is also described, which involves the use of a 1360 tonne vertical load mine roof simulator.

"The kuroko deposits, which are extremely variable in size, comprise both stratiform layers of clastic sulphide particles and cross-cutting vein and disseminated components. The ores lie on the flanks of rhyolitic lava domes which have risen from a postulated subvolcanic magma chamber that provided cupriferous hydrothermal solutions and also acted as a heat source driving ground-water convecting cells. The polymetallic sulphides precipitated initially in explosion craters, pipe fillings and feeder veins as rising hydrothermal solutions mixed with sea water. As sulphides clogged the plumbing system, minor phreatomagmatic explosions produced layers of sulphide fragments on the adjacent sea floor. One to ten repetitions of this process produced multiple fragmental sulphide beds. Each deposit formed in a relatively short space of time, because only minor tuff beds are intercalated in spite of active volcanicity in the region. In this model, the heated ground waters convecting through thick piles of acidic pyroclastic rocks leach the zinc, lead and barium later deposited as kuroko ores. As the subvolcanic pluton cools, the supply of silica and copper wanes and the minor counter-circulation cells above the pluton are replaced by main cell fluids bearing zinc, etc. This change in solution flow is abrupt rather than gradual, as the plumbing system is somewhat disrupted by the magmatophreatic explosions that create each ore layer.IntroductionKnowledge of the kuroko deposits ha s greatly expanded during the 25 years since modern recognition of their volcanogenic origin. However, one aspect of the ore s, which may be of unique importance in their genesis, has received little attention. That is the fragmental character of much o f the sulphide ore, which was briefly referred to in a previous publication (Clark, 1971) and is examined in more detail by Barton (1978). The Pachuca - Real del Monte district has produced about 46.6 kt (51,300 ton) Ag from subvolcanic vein deposits. Three types of wall rock alteration are spatially related to the veins: K-feldspar, propylitic, and phyllic. K-feldspar alteration occurs within veins; propylitic alteration occurs in fractured rocks between veins; and phyllic alteration occurs above veins. Concentrations of some trace elements in altered rocks relative to unaltered rocks are summarized below. [ ]

The a ad on Connection" For the purpose of this paper, we will concentrate on the ubquitous radon gas as the principle, low-level radiation effect from uranium tailings piles. Standards are also proposed for gamma radiations but, by most accounts, this is much less of a low level problem than is radon. I am also aware of some just completed research at Oak Ridge National Laboratories that suggest polonium may be a major concern in tailings, but those data are preliminary at this time. What is radon gas? In the first place it is not a gas in the accepted sense in that it has no driving pressure head. It might prove a more convenient description to call it radon vapor. Radon vapor, then, is 7-1/2 times heavier than air. Radiologically, it is an alpha emitter which means it spontaneously gives off high ionizing potential but low penetrating power particles. In fact, the alpha particle has such low penetrating power that this sheet of paper will completely shield a person. The problem, though, is breathing the radon decay products, called radon daughters. If radon daughter products are ingested into the lungs, their alpha emissions may cause cancer. The principle carcinoma associated with breathing radon, or more basically, associated with radiological effects is oat cell car- cinoma of the undifferentiated mall cell type. Radon has a 3.8 day half life which means in less than four days half of its initial radioactivity has decayed away. In less than a month it essentially becomes inert or non-radioactive. The practical concern of economic minability of large, high-grade manganese nodule deposits in the northeast Pacific Ocean is addressed in this Bureau of Mines report. Principal objectives are to (1) estimate tonnage and grade of deposits with significant potential and (2) describe and estimate profitability of operations designed to mine and process deposits with greatest apparent potential. Analysis of data from over 800 ship stations identified three areas for detailed study. Average metal contents of these areas range from 1.30 to 1.45 wt pet nickel, 1.00 to 1.24 wt pct copper, 0.21 to 0.26 wt pct cobalt, and 26.8 to 27.8 wt pct manganese. Estimated recoverable nodule resources are 67.0, 66.9, and 148.8 million dry metric tons (t). A system to mine, transport, and process nodules from the three sites is described and costed. Although hypothetical, the system utilizes hydraulic mining and Cuprion (Kennecott) processing, which have been successfully tested at pilot scale. Nickel, copper, and cobalt are the three primary products, but ferromanganese is a considered option. Estimated capital requirements are approximately $1.5 to $1.7 billion for three-metal production. If ferromanganese were recovered, an additional investment of about $130 million would be required. Operating costs range from $71 to $83 per dry metric ton of nodules without manganese, and from $103 to $123 per dry metric ton with ferromanganese. Discounted cash flow analyses predict low returns, ranging from 2.7 to 5.2 pct with ferromanganese and from 4.1 to 6.0 pct without.

In this situation, a number of alternatives is available to the company, including the possibility of ""going it alone"" by raising capital through a public offering, or by striking a deal with a ""major"" or some other substantial investor.This article focuses on the latter possibility, and discusses in broad term s the main income tax implications of various arrangements between a typical junior exploration company and a larger public company for the development of a particular property. It will be appreciated that a discussion of other important considerations, such as those pertaining to securities exchange regulation s and company law requirements, is beyond the scope of this article.Jointly Owned CorporationPerhaps the simplest way of dealing with the problem of financing the development of a property is to sell the property outright, pocket the proceeds, and run! Clearly, though, this alternative is unacceptable to most prospectors and developers, who are predictably reluctant to completely relinquish their equity interest in a promising property. An additional strike against such an outright sale is that the sale could trigger an income tax liability. Risks in underground construction are often viewed as technical in nature; "running ground, " "squeezing ground" and "chimneys" are terms that appear in construction managers' nightmares, and occasionally in their underground projects. Financial consequences of these and other project risks are reviewed. Special attention is paid to sources of cost overruns. From this study a structure evolves for setting priorities for risk management actions; these actions can also be tested for impact and potential effectiveness. Finally, case study reviews of six underground projects indicate the "state of the practice" for financial risk management.

Many times during the construction of a project, whether large or small, the engineer will become involved with management of the work and workforce. In some cases, mine management will turn over the direction and responsibility of doing the work to the engineer. Because of this, it is important to know some of the basic principles of human resource applications- among other management concerns. This chapter, therefore, looks at the fundamental principles of human resource management. Three broad discussions are presented to the reader. These are: (1) organization, communications, and responsibilities of management; (2) analysis of worker motivation; and (3) supervisory leadership. Each topic encompasses the current thinking for coal mining and mining management. Much of the information in this chapter comes from Practical Coal Mine Management, by this author and published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., which discusses in depth many of the ideas presented here. "Rarely in our technological society does the discovery of a new class of inorganic materials result in such a wide scientific interest and kaleidoscopic development of applications as has happened with the zeolite molecular sieves." That opening sentence in a landmark volume on zeolite molecular sieves by D. W. Breck (1974), is, if anything, an understatement. Zeolites were recognized as a new group of minerals in the 1750s, but it was not until 1930 that the first analysis of the crystal structure of a zeolite mineral was made. In the late 1940s research workers at Union Carbide Corp. began a program of zeolite synthesis and study which has resulted in one of the major research achievements of all time. Naturally, with the vast research and development efforts devoted to the synthetic molecular sieves, Union Carbide became concerned in the mid-1950s about its position should minable deposits of natural analogues be discovered. Zeolite minerals have diverse origins, and even a brief discussion of these is beyond the scope of this paper. The early work on zeolites was confined to igneous rock occurrences (e.g., amygdules and veins) which were formed by "space-filling;" these crystals tend to be euhedral, thereby rendering them appealing to both mineralogists and collectors. During the first year or so of Union Carbide's exploration (which began in mid-1957) attention was devoted solely to such igneous, occurrences. A landmark paper by Bramlette and Posnjak (1933) heralded the potential significance of the occurrence of zeolite minerals as alteration products of vitric ash and similar materials. In the summer of 1958, full attention was directed by Union Carbide to the search for deposits of this type in the western United States. Since then, such exploration has been continuous by both commercial firms and private parties. The future economic potential for natural zeolite deposits seems to be restricted to those of the "open-and-closed system" types as described by Sheppard (this chapter). Therefore, this and the following discussions will concentrate upon these types; the other types of zeolites in sedimentary rocks (e.g., deep-sea sediments, burial metamorphic, and hydrothermal) will be, for the most part, ignored. Despite the relative cheapness of natural zeolite deposits as compared with the cost of synthetic molecular sieves, there has been minimal development of zeolite mining in the US over the past 25 years or so. Mumpton (this chapter) discusses the present commercial utilization of natural zeolites and their future potential in detail, but perhaps the following will serve as useful background. In the early days of synthetic molecular sieve research and production, the efforts were concentrated largely upon such high-value applications as physical separation of components in a stream (based upon molecular size and geometry) and in catalysis. Due to a number of reasons (some of which are difficult for an outsider to understand), natural zeolite ores (beneficiated or not) have not made substantial inroads upon the use of the higher-priced synthetic molecular sieves for the foregoing applications, but this is not to say that such a condition will exist forever. In presenting this overview, it is the intent to stimulate further interest as well as provide a framework from which further in-depth investigation can be initiated.Topics which will be covered include rope cores, lubrication practices, loop dividers, rope failures, etc.IntroductionThe first friction hoist was designed in Belgium in J862 by Lemielle. However, it was not until 1877 when Carl Frederich Koepe installed a friction winder sheave at the Hanover Colliery in Germany, that the design was given serious consideration. The winder consisted of a motor-powered sheave over which a single rope was installed, and the end s attached to two conveyance s. Beneath the conveyances a rope was connected, designed to reduce the chance of slip. This was the first balance rope.This earl y mod el is a far cry from the modern tower or ground mounted Koepe winders employed throughout the mining industry today. There have been vast improvements in all aspects of the Koepe winders. One such improvement is in the balance ropes used. This particular area will be concentrated on, with emphasis on selection, maintenance and field experience.SelectionThe sale purpose o f a balance rope is to counter the head rope weight. Obviously then, in selection o f balance ropes, weight is of primary concern. Usually the head and balance ropes are equal in weight. However, sometimes balance ropes which are 5 to 10070 heavier than the head ropes are employed. These reduce horsepower demands during peak acceleration periods, and assist in overcoming inertia during retardation periods. As well, it is sometimes preferred to reduce the balance rope weight, in order to compensate for the eventual weight buildup of lubricant, dirt and debris."

Difficulties with the screening of large volumes of pulp to remove plus 600 /km material before the adsorption circuit and to retain plus 20-mesh carbon in the adsorption contactors have largely been solved, with the result that the plant can now handle its design throughput. The elution and electrowinning processes have been modified to simplify the circuit, but the regeneration of carbon remains unsatisfactory. The production of fine carbon in the plant can lead to increased gold losses, and this carbon must be collected and treated. Collection methods for fine carbon and some indications of the quantity of the carbon and its gold values are given.

This paper outlines a well proven and highly successful approach for eliminating many of the problem and frustrations often experienced in plant startup. The approach was developed over a period of 25 years during which some 90 plants were commissioned. This paper discusses startup from the contractor’s perspective and highlights the requirement for detailed startup planning, careful coordination during the project final construction phase, and thorough checkout of equipment prior to introduction of feed. Performance of these services has demonstrated a valuable opportunity exists for the contractor to assist in the training of the plant operating personnel.

The distribution and properties of interseam and overburden rocks in coal mines is largely controlled by conditions at the time of their original deposition. Within the developed areas of the Bowen Basin, depositional environments range from fluvial through upper and lower detaic, to marginal marine and intertidal facies. Each environment has a characteristic association of lithologies with specific range of properties, and each lithology has a characteristic geometry. Fragmentation problems are associated with ancient sand channel systems, where the difficulties encountered depend on the dimension and shape of channels, their continuity, orientation to mining face and associated sediment bodies formed as levees or interdistributary muds. Stability problems in spoil, pit floor and highwalls are usually associated with mudstones which contain swelling clays derived from the original Permian volcanic source. This clay problem is aggravated by deep Tertiary weathering. Case studies are presented of detailed analyses and prediction of geomechanical properties on a mine site scale. These are used in investigating or forecasting fragmentation and stability hazards. The studies incorporate detailed field mapping, bore log data and computer data processing. They allow the development of detailed depositional models for specific interseam intervals within mines. As areas of depositional environment are identified they allow the construction of maps of similar mining conditions and the determination of the most suitable mining techniques.

Vibrations from thirty-seven blasts were monitored using three seismographs. Data analysis showed that square root, cube root, and site-specific scaling predicted ground motion with equal reliability. Imprecise prediction is caused by geologic and blast variability, particularly inaccurate delay times. Vibrations at some mines were consistently lower or higher than vibrations reported in the U.S. Bureau of Mines studies. Regulations based on USBM data could then be too conservative or lenient. Predominant vibration frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz, but several blasts had significant energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to delay intervals.

Access to geoscience reference informa- tion including mining and mineral processing has increased considerably in the last five years in Australia. This has been due principally to the use of computer-based information storage and retrieval systems. The main reference data base for the mineral and petroleum industries and disciplines in Australia is the Australian Earth Sciences Information System (AESIS), cooperatively developed and coordinated by the Australian Mineral Foundation (AMF). AESIS is created on the CSIRO computing network (CSIRONET) which has a CYBER 76 host computer located at the CSIRO Division of Computing Research (DCR) at Canberra. Data entry was until recently carried out by AMF using a dedicated line through the Adelaide CSIRONET node to the CYBER 76 interactive system. Data entry is now done directly at the AMF on a DEC PDP 11/44 mini computer that is also a host work station on CSIRONET. Data collection via magnetic tape media input from other computer-based systems is under development. The software used for data entry and management of the data base was developed by CSIRO CILES Systems Development Group. For public interactive online use the AESIS data base is transferred by tape to AUSINET - the Australian information net- work run by ACI Computer Services, Melbourne, where the data base is converted to a form suitable for the IBM STAIRS software. CSIRO facilities at DCR Canberra are used to produce computer type-set camera ready products and output in microform, on magnetic tape or as graphic display. This paper discusses the use of computer modeling, data manipulation, and mapping of three multi-seam coal properties in the Appalachian coal basin. Each case history represents a slightly different application of computer usage for estimation of reserves and planning surface mine sequencing. This practical use of computers demonstrates the suitability of data processing for normal evaluation of coal properties.

A process control strategy has been developed for the lead circuit of the lead- zinc concentrator at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC), Broken Hill, Australia. The general aims of the control system were to produce a final concentrate with a zinc content below a certain limit and, at the same time, obtain the highest lead recovery possible. As presently arranged the system involves control of the cleaner feed mass flaw by cleaner diverter tray manipulation and control of xanthate addition based on per cent lead in feed. Generally this approach works well but for abnormal conditions such as very high or law pH the system requires further improvement.
