Spinel ferrites, like NiFe2-2x Znx Ti4 O4 Fe CO1.5 Ge0.5 Tix O4, Ga1-x Fex Ni CO O4, Nil-x Fex Mn2 O4 have been prepared using the respective metal oxides in Stoichiometric quantities, by the ceramic method. The oxides were homogenized in acetone medium, pelletifed by using poly vinyl acetate as the binder. They were fired at 1000°C for 100 hours for compound formation. Chalcogenide spinels such as Zn1-x Cux Cr2 Se4 where 0=x=l and Cu1-x Fex Cr2 Se4 where 0=x=0.3 have been prepared by using 99.99% pure elements and then fired at 1000°C in quartz ampoules under vacuum conditions. X-ray diffraction studies of these compounds indicated a single cubic spinel phase. DC resistivity studies of the compounds were taken between 300-700K using LCR bridge by two probe technique. Thermo-electric power measurements were taken between 300-500K for all the compounds. Initial susceptibility studies have been carried out using a low field (0.506) and from which the nature of magnetic dimains and Curie temperatures were determined. Magnetic hysteresis measurements were carried out at 300K and at 80K, using alternating current hysteresis loop tracer, at 2K02 field. Mossbauer spectral measurements were carried out using Co57 source embedded in a copper matrix and an absorber containing 0.3 mg/cm2 of the sample. The spectra has been fitted by Mossfit Program. The catalytic effect of the spinel ferrites NiFe2-2x Znx Tix O4 where 0=x=1 has been studied by using the model reaction of decomposition of H2O2 at temperatures from 40°C to 70°C. It was found that the spinel oxides were found to possess poor catalytic activity.

In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore. from a system's point of view, slurry transportation would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alternative examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibiliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. 1. The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then temporarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe- line, and personnel are needed. In a first phase (Fig. 2). a hydraulic hoisting installation with crushing and grinding units, storage facilities, and pumps has been located at a level of about 400 to 600 m (1310 to 1970 ft) below the surface. The Permo-Triassic Bowen Basin developed during the final stages of the Tasman Orogenic Phase in eastern Australia. The basin has considerable economic value as a source of coal, natural gas and precious metals. The basin, which is of controversial origin, is preserved as a north-south trending, asymmetrical syncline bounded in places by faults. It is here interpreted as a retroarc foreland basin which developed on the landward (west) side of a continental arc associated with continent-ocean plate convergence. Initiation of the basin occurred via back-arc extension in Early Permian times, coincident with a phase of talc-alkaline arc volcanism. Early Permian, mostly marine sedimentation gave away to extensive coastal and alluvial plain depositional systems in Late Permian times, coincident with a resurgence of arc volcanism. Triassic sedimentation was almost entirely alluvial and coeval with westward propagation of thrust sheets from the eastern basin margin. Compressive tectonics climaxed in Middle to Late Triassic times, terminating sediment accumulation and uplifting the entire area.

"INTRODCICTIONThe search for the cause(s) of coal workers' Pneunoconiosis continues despite the vast amount of research that has been undertaken over the past forty to fifty years. Good correlation between the mass of dust inhaled over workers' lifetimes and the incidence of the disease has led to the development of effective environmental standards and implementation of good procedures for the control of dust generation and dispersion in the working place. Research has only begun, however, to uncover the biochemical mechanisms involved in initiating the disease.Correlation between the rank of the coal seam in which miners worked and disease incidence and severity is acknowledged worldwide, but the agents in the higher rank coal seams which cause CWP arc still not defined. The basic components of the coal seams, i.e., the elements and minerals, are generally known, but the way in which they interact with human pulmonary cells is largely still a mystery.The process of disease development is a biochemical one which depends on the characteristics of the pulmonary cells within their immediate biochemical environment and the characteristics of invading respirable coal mine dust particles, probably both chemical and physical ones. The cell-particle relationship, therefore, must be defined, and both cells and particles must be characterized according to properties which potentially are involved in the disease process.Following such characterization, specific respirable dusts from different coal seams, which appear to have different effects on coal workers, must be obtained or constructed and then used in experiments designed to determine dust toxicity or the response of animals exposed to the dusts.The results presented here focus on characterizing properties of respirable coal mine dust particles collected from operating longwalls in West Virginia and Virginia Longwall panels were selected for analysis because the respirable dust in the coal face areas is largely uncontaminated by rock dust and analysis of the dust yields results unconfounded by rock dust."

The extraction of gold from chloride solutions by ion exchange is examined. It is shown that at initial gold concentrations between 1 - 5 ppm, 20 g/l C1- and pH 5, the kinetics of loading on weak base resins are slightly slower than those observed with activated charcoal. Equilibrium loading of auric chloride varies considerably as a function of pH from one resin to another. For all of the resins studied, nearly complete gold extraction was achieved between pH 2 and pH 6.5. Sodium hypochlorite was found to exhibit a slight effect on the equilibrium loading of gold chloride.

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes (CMD), an Exxon Affiliate stewarded by Exxon Coal and Minerals Company, operates two' copper mines and concentrators in Chile. Pilot plant studies were initiated in 1984 using a 0.46 meter and a 0.91 meter diameter column for the cleaning of copper concentrate. This eventually resulted in the design and operation of a rectangular column with an area of 6.8 m2, increasing the final copper concentrate grade from about 30% to almost 32'1. Cu without any loss in copper recovery. Evaluation studies of a commercial bubble generator as against the previously used filter cloth air sparger are now in progress.

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) processes are currently attracting special attention in materials processing. CVD processes are now used to produce special materials in the form of thin films, coatings, composites, and optical fibers. This process produces material of high purity, in complex shapes, and in a variety of microstructures. It is a capital intensive process, involving use of high cost raw materials. Modeling simulations have the potential of reducing the time for CVD . process design, and the need for experimentation. Modeling would, therefore, appear to be an attractive option for producing a product of acceptable quality. At Ohio University, progress has been made in modeling of CVD processes, specially in the areas of optical fiber preform fabrication, and fiber coating.

To date developments in the simulation of carbon-in-pulp (CIP) adsorption circuits have focused primarily on the modeling of adsorption. This series of three papers describes a development in a direction that has received less attention, i.e. the need for a detailed description of the movement of carbon and slurry in continuous CIP and carbon-in-leach (CIL) plants. A new simulator has been developed based on the population-balance approach for modeling the movement of carbon and slurry. Existing adsorption and leaching models are evaluated in this paper in order to establish which are appropriate for use in the new simulator. The details of the simulator are given in Part 2 of this series.

Research and development has been carried out on the patented Dynamic Rock Anchor, tradenamed DYNA-ROK and DYNA-ROK PLUS Anchors, which are manufactured and marketed by Ingersoll-Rand Company. This paper will present the results of field testing of this revolutionary new concept in ground control. Geologic conditions will be described where the plastic sleeve of the DYWA-ROK anchor alone is sufficient to provide anchorage and also, where in softer ground conditions, the DYWA-ROK PLUS is applied. The rationale for making the decision as to the type of fixture to be employed, the length of plastic tube to be used and the quantity of resin are explained. Pull test data will be shown from eight different coal seams in the Eastern United States where the product has been installed.

Comparison tests were performed on 6 emulsion concentrates, 3 microballoon sensitized emulsion concentrates, and 2 water gel concentrates from 8 different sources with ANFO used as a control standard. Variables measured include density, detonation, velocity, detonation pressure, calculated borehole pressure, viscosity, and lead cylinder deformation for blends of 15%, 30%, and 45% concentrate and AN/ANFO blends. Comparative results are presented for detonation velocity vs. deformation, and percentage of inherent air vs. deformation for these blends. It was hoped that these tests would serve as a tool to facilitate the comparison of different manufacturer's concentrates in AN/ANFO blends for equivalent performance characteristics and to help evaluate these products on an equal basis for bid solicitation purposes.

In order to develop more accurate procedures for scale-up and design of semi-autogenous grinding mills through detailed mathematical models, a better understanding of the charge motion and rocklball segregation is needed. To achieve this a 0.61 m (2.0 ft) diam by 0.305m (1 .0ft) length plexiglas mill was constructed as a scale model of a commercial SAG mill. Rock motion in the rotating mill was simulated using various sizes of ceramic balls. Quantitative measurements of dynamic angle of repose, water and slurry motion, holdup and size segregation of the charge were taken. In addition, a video presentation (available to the public) was prepared to elucidate charge and water motion at various mill speeds, charge volumes, rocksize distribution, and flow rates.

Maps of mineral grade used to assess mineral reserves are most commonly generated using one of the many estimation methods available such as inverse distance weighting or ordinary kriging. Most such maps incorporate a degree of spatial smoothing which is an integral part of the averaging process. In deposits with highly variable grade which include many gold deposits, this smoothing can mask the detailed geometry of the mineralization at the economic cutoff grades being considered. In underground mining, a knowledge of this geometry is important in the choice of mining method and thus in the assessment of the minable reserves.The method of conditional simulation in geostatistics can be used to generate maps of grade which reflect the actual spatial variability of grade as measured through the variograms of the drill hole data. Simulated maps can provide a number of equiprobable images of the mineralization geometry from which a more appropriate mining model of the mineralization can be developed. Multiple simulations can also be used to assess the uncertainty existing in the current knowledge of the reserves.

In February of 1989 the Mission Complex of ASARCO Incorporated completed an expansion of its concentrator, raising the base mining rate from 25,900 TPO (28,500 STPD) to 37,200 TPO (41,000 STPD). The expansion was accomplished by extending the twelve existing Mission ball mills in length, by installing the grinding circuit from Asarco's idled Sacaton Concentrator along with various auxiliary equipment, and by modifications to the flotation circuit and water systems. This paper will give a brief history of the consolidation of the ore body which made the expansion possible and explain the various parts of the expansion.

Entropy is an important concept both in natural and social sciences.Considering the preparatory process of the earthquakes as an open system, in view of basic ideas of the Theory of the Dissipative Structure, the seis-mological Entropy is introduced as an order parame-ter, describing the scale of order associated with the earthquake distribution in time, space and mag-nitude. The features of evolution of seismic acti-vities before and after the large earthquakes have been studied by using the seismological entropy.The preliminary results show that the seismological entropy in certain region decreases as the large earthquake is approaching, it means that the distri-bution of earthquakes has turned gradually in order from disorder.It is expectation that the application of the Principle of Entropy in seismological research will deepen the understanding of the physical process of earthquake preparation. Meanwhile, it will also offer some enlightements in studying mitigation of seismic hazard as well as earthquake prediction.

At the kernel of the subject is due diligence in major decision-making, that is, where major money amounts and a large corporate commitment are at stake. The "due diligence" means how carefully we do our homework before making the decision. The homework or feasibility study addresses different parts of the decision. In the industrial minerals business the study seeks to uncover the pros and cons in: o The mineral reserves, quantity, quality, mineability, access, etc. o The environmental impact of mining, processing and transporting. o The economics of operations. o Financial aspects o Legal aspects o Many other aspects o And -oh yes! the marketing aspects.

Treatment of refractory gold ores containing arsenic has always presented a major problem in their processing to recover the contained precious metal values. The major difficulties are concerned with lower recoveries and production of hazardous fumes, effluents and residues. Due to these arsenic related problems, many otherwise economically attractive precious metal deposits and dumps all over the world are not exploited. In recent years, treatment processes for refractory gold ores and concentrates have been explored. A few commercial operations employing roasting or pressure leaching have resulted. Roasting has limitations due to environmental constraints related to off gases. Pressure leaching involving high temperatures (180° to 200° C or 356° to 392° F) and pressures (2.75 MPa or 400 psi) is accompanied by high capital and operating costs.

I have to express my surprise and must send a note of warning concerning the use of polyurethane foam as described in a paper by R.N. Torbin and R.F. Kovar, entitled "Innovative Shaft Lining Method," published in your February 1989 edition. In September, 1986, 177 miners lost their lives when they were exposed to fumes downwind from a fire in a tunnel lined with polyurethane foam. Whilst polyurethane exhibits reasonable fire retardent properties in small-scale tests, mass use in a tubular configuration, exacerbated by the furnace effect of cross-radiation, can lead to a rapid, uncontrollable conflagration.
