Commercial volumes of nickeliferous laterite ores overlie part of a 90 km long belt of peridotites in central Dominican Republic. Protores are serpentinized harzburgites and dunites, with lesser serpentinite. The ore mineralogy consists mostly of goethite, serpentine-group minerals, quartz and poorly crystallized, x- ray amorphous materials. Minor constituents are hematite, gibbsite, olivine and enstatite. In the Ore Dressing plant the mine feed is subjected initially to proper sizing and blending to produce a homogenized mix. Subsequent drying and upgrading, by selective crushing and screening of rock fragments through a Barmac circuit, complete preparation of the ore for pyrometallurgical processing.

The channel reactor for ferrous and nonferrous processing has been modeled as a combination of ideal reactors. Cold model studies simulated the counter-current flow of slag and matte (or metal) with high-strength submerged gas injection. A composite model has been developed which describes the mass transfer between the two liquid phases, including the transfer of minor elements. The residence time for the matte droplets in the matte/slag emulsion is compared with the settling rates for the matte droplets in the slag to determine their relative importance in the mass transfer between matte and slag. The governing equations for mass transfer have been developed using correlations for the mass-transfer coefficients in the continuous and dispersed phases. An application of this scheme to a typical copper smelting system is presented.

Friction factors or coefficients of friction used to estimate the resistances of mine airways are, in the main, estimated from empirical measurements made in other airways considered to be of a similar geometry and type of lining. A somewhat more analytical approach, although still based on empiricism, is to estimate the ratio of the average height of the asperities to the hydraulic mean diameter of the airway (e/D ratio) and then to employ the Moody Chart or one of the equations that have long been established to represent the [coefficient of friction v Reynolds number curves] on that chart. Unfortunately, the Moody Chart and corresponding equations are based on pipes of uniformly distributed (sand grain) roughness whereas the asperities that exist on the surfaces of mine openings are frequently highly irregular both in their size and distribution. This is considered to be a major cause of discrepancies that have been found between coefficients of friction by the Moody Chart and those actually measured in mine airways. The work described in this paper examines an alternative method of estimating coefficients of friction for rough natural surfaces with uneven sizes and distribution of surface asperities. The technique utilizes the relatively recent developments in fractal analysis. A fractal dimension is determined from the topography of the surface. This has been correlated to coefficient of friction for a scale model of a mine airway. Further work is being carried out in actual mine airways. However, at this time, it appears promising that the fractal method may allow coefficient of friction to be predicted for given types of strata and method of roadway drivage.

The correct procedures are particularly critical at the sample preparation stage where decisions concerning pulverizing equipment, sample size, contamination and dissolution will impact on the final results independent of the instrumental method of analysis. Several experiments were designed to quantify the impact of these approaches.

"The prospective Tulks volcanic belt hosts five significant massive sulfide deposits, Tulks Prospect, Tulks East, Jack's Pond, Daniel's Pond and Victoria Mine, as well as numerous showings and indications throughout its 70 km outcrop length. Regionally, the 498 Ma sequence consists dominantly of felsic pyroclastic rocks and flows with interbedded mafic volcanic units and finegrained sediments, commonly graphitic. Contemporaneous granitoid rocks occur in the south half of the belt. Rocks usually display a strong NE-SW, steeply dipping, penetrative foliation and other shear-related high-strain fabrics. Facing directions are normally northwest, although there is local evidence of folding. Sulfide bodies and their alteration systems are deformed and shape-modified in the style of ambient strain.The Tulks, Tulks East and Jack's Pond prospects appear to occupy a similar stratigraphic level, on or near the contact between a thick felsic pile and an overlying broad, conductive package of graphitic sedimentary rocks. All are pyritic deposits with well-developed footwall alteration systems. The Tulks prospect comprises four polymetallic lenses totalling 750 000 t. Three lenses constituting more than 6 000 000 t of sulfide mineralization are indicated at Tulks East but only the 210 000 t ""B"" lens contains significant base metals. Jack's Pond consists of a very extensive, zoned alteration complex in which four lenses of massive to semi-massive pyrite + chalcopyrite are known. The central part of the system, characterized by Mg chlorite and carbonate, is enveloped by pervasive sericitization and capped by intensely silicified and pyritized volcanics. The sulfide lenses are interpreted as part of the footwall zone and are beneath that part of the system most likely to hostpolymetallic massive sulfides.Daniel's Pond differs from the other prospects in such fundamental ways as metal content, associated alteration and structural setting. The deposit comprises strongly tectonized, Ag-rich, Zn-Pb mineralization distinguished by a pronounced Ba-As-Sb signature. Mineralization is confined to a narrow, north-south high-strain zone which separates unstrained mafic volcanic rocks to the east from well-foliated felsic rocks. The deposit lacks an extensive alteration halo and at its north end is associated with a lens of barren, undeformed massive pyrite.The Victoria Mine deposit, the most cupriferous of the five, is related to a moderately dipping structure that separates well-foliated Tulks volcanic rocks from an overlying, less deformed volcanic sedimentary sequence that may be as young as 462 Ma. The structure is also the locus of black chlorite, dolomite and quartz alteration. Structurally remobilized precursor sulfide mineralization is one possible source for the deposit."

The Zadra, AARL and organic elution processes and variations of them are presently widely used to recover gold from activated carbon. Despite this the study of the kinetics of elution have received relatively little attention. It is the aim of this study to investigate the rate processes taking place during elution in both inorganic and organic solutions. Batch adsorption and elution rate and equilibrium experiments were performed. The spatial concentration of gold inside carbon particles at various stages of the adsorption and elution processes were measured with a scanning electron microscope using an image analyzer to control and manage the micro-analysis data. The activated carbon particles exhibited film and intra-particle mass transfer rate- controlled behaviour during adsorption in a caustic aqueous solution at 95°C. Elutions in the aqueous caustic acetone solution at 30°C and the caustic aqueous solution at 95°C were unaffected by change in stirring rate. Elution was modelled by desorption reaction rate-control at the outer surface of the carbon particle. Adsorption and elution isotherms under duplicated solution conditions showed reasonable agreement for the inorganic solution and a large disparity for the organic solution.

The Mule Canyon gold deposit, located 14 miles ESE of Battle Mountain, Nevada, was discovered in 1986 as the result of a GFMC grass-roots exploration program. Drilling to date has identified six discrete orebodies which contain a demonstrated gold reserve of 8.487 million tons at an average grade of 0.136 oz/ton, totaling 1,152,000 ounces. Mineralization is associated with argillic alteration and silicification, localized along NNW trending high-angle faults within Miocene basaltic andesites. Trace element geochemistry at Mule Canyon is typical of upper level hot spring precious metal systems, displaying elevated Ag, As, Sb, Hg, and Se.

The Early Norian Windy Craggy massive sulfide deposit is within the allochthonous Alexander terrane of the Insular tectonic belt in extreme northwestern British Columbia (Figure 1). Host rocks are the Middle Tats Volcanics, part of an informally-named volcano-sedimentary succession of mixed graphitic argillites and mafic pillowed and massive volcanic flows and sills of Upper Triassic age (Figure 2) that have suffered only lower greeschist-facies metamorphism. The volcanic rocks are light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched and display a variably developed back-arc subduction signature. Major and trace element compositions of the host argillite show that it contains an appreciable hydrothermal component, as evidenced by low high Fe and Mn contents. These sediments therefore record steady, continuous hydrothermal activity punctuated by intermittent turbidity currents sweeping into the basin. The deposit consists of at least two discrete sulfide lenses (the North and South Sulfide Bodies), as shown in Figure 3, a level plan at the elevation of the exploration workings. Published reserves at 0.5% copper cut-off are 297.4 million tonnes grading 1.38% Cu, 0.08% Co, 0.21 g/t Au and 3.9 g/t Ag (as of December 1991). However, the deposit is larger than this and further drilling is required to delineate it completely. Mineralization comprises massive sulfide, stringer/stockwork, and finely bedded to laminated sulfides and exhalites. Stockwork mineralization consists of sulfide-quartz-chlorite veins with attendant chlorite and silica alteration. Mineralization consists predominantly of massive pyrrhotite andlor pyrite with lesser chalcopyrite and magnetite. Figure 4 is an oblique section through the North Sulfide Body, the most northerly sulfide mass shown in Figure 3, which shows the distribution of the pyrite and pynhotite-rich massive mineralization and the stringer zone. The North Sulfide Body contains appreciable sphalerite, whereas the South Sulfide Body contains only trace amounts. For variable speed mills, the operating range for mill speed has to be defined so that mill power/torque requirement can be matched by the motor power/torque capability. The contract to drive twin 4,100 foot (1250.5m) long tunnels under the existing Cumberland Gap highway was awarded to a Joint Venture of S.A. Healy of Chicago, Illinois and Lodigiani USA of Fairfax, Virginia in January of 1991 under a $51.8 million bid. Due to very complex geological conditions, there were six distinct categories of excavation, the New Austrian Method of ground support was utilized throughout.

INTRODUCTION This paper report presents the general case history for the construction of the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS) project. A 1982 City of Los Angeles Wastewater Facilities Plan recognized that a 19.3 km (12¬mile) section of the North Outfall Sewer (NOS), from Culver City to the Hyperion Treatment Plant, was deteriorating and had insufficient capacity. Built in the 1920s of unreinforced concrete and lined with vitreous clay tiles, the originally unventilated NOS suffered considerable corrosion by H2S gas. This caused roof tile and concrete to fall to the bottom of the pipe, which, over the years, reduced the 11.9 M3/S (420 cubic feet per second (cfs)) design capacity of the NOS to a current level of approximately 8.5 M3/S (300 cfs). This worsening condition, thereby contributing to the polluting of Santa Monica Bay. This situation culminated in the State of California Regional Water Quality Control Board, Los Angeles Region, issuing a Cease and Desist Order on January 27, 1986, which required the City of Los Angeles to eliminate such dry weather overflows through a number of prescribed actions. One of these was to construct the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS) by April 1, 1993. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The NORS Project involved the construction of over eight miles of tunnel and related structures. The concentrator plant of Fahrica Mine, that started production in 1977, was using nine Jones wet high intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) of the standard type DP 317 with a 1.5 mm gap width for the production of pelletfeed concentrate. These WHIMS units were operating in parallel with a feed rate of 110 t per hour, with about 47 per cent Fe in the feed, and with a maximum of only 0.8 per cent magnetite. The field strength was about 1.2 Tesla. From 1986, the mine has adapted its production facilities to mine and concentrate larger amounts of lowgrade itabintes to maximise the use of the available iron ore reserves. An increase of up to three per cent magnetite in the magnetic separator feed, resulted in a reduction of capacity. This was due to partial clogging of the separation boxes at high field intensities, which were required for the recovery of the very fine hematite. Even by lowering the feed rate and the field intensity the problem could not be resolved. After extensive testwork in a pilot plant, with a Jones separator model DI' 90, the commercial WHIMS plant was modified into a two stage process using the existing nine Jones separators. The gap of the first stage with four machines was increased to a width of 3.5 mm, corresponding to a maximum field intensity of 0.7 Tesla. This first 'medium intensity scalping stage' is followed by a second 'real' high intensity WHIMS step with five machines operating at the original settings with 1.5 mm gap width and 1.0 Testa maximum field intensity. Feed rates of up to 320 tons per hour in the first and up to 240 tons per hour in the second stage could be achieved. The design concept of the concentrator at Fabrica mine is described using the old and new flowsheets. Details of the pilot plant testwork as well as actual performance data of the new plant section are presented.

"Loading and transportation are important activities of the mining process. Automation of these activities in underground hard rock mining has been discussed for a long time. This paper deals with the performance evaluation of a prototype automatic Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) vehicle (a 7-ton GHH LF LHD model) operating in Zinkgruvan mine, Sweden. The purpose of the data analysis is to evaluate the operational and maintenance characteristics of the automatic LHD system in the mine. Graphical and numerical methods have been used for the statistical analysis of the data. IntroductionDuring the past years, the idea of integrated automation and tele-operation on Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machines (Fig. 1) has attracted considerable interest in the Swedish mining industry. This is mainly due to the demand for improvement in the working environment and due to the rapid development of economic and reliable microprocessors for mining vehicles. Several advantages can be foreseen with the application of a Remote-controlled/Automatic LHD (RAL) system in underground mining. Some of them are (1)':• better utilization of working hours;• less interruption in production at shift changes;• better operational control of a fleet of vehicles;• improved safety; and• one operator may be able to operate more than one vehicle simultaneously."

Ion flotation is a promising separation process for continuously removing toxic metal ions from dilute process effluents. After treating the effluent with appropriate surfactant(s), the metal- bearing species adsorb onto the surface of rising gas bubbles and can be collected as foams. Suitable collectors have been identified for most of the elements of the periodic table. However, a better understanding of the thermodynamic, kinetic and engineering principles that determine the performance of ion flotation systems would facilitate commercial utilization of this technology. A model system of sodium dodecylsulfate-ethanol has been studied for the removal of Cu (11) from dilute solutions, using laboratory-scale flotation columns. This paper reports the effects of the air flow rate, solution height, foam drainage zone height and col1ector:metal ion ratio on the flotation kinetics, ultimate recovery of metal, flotation product grade, foam losses and effluent quality. Preliminary results for Pb (11) removal are also reported.

Like Russia and Ukraine, Kazakhstan is one of a few former Soviet republics well-endowed in mineral and energy resources (Fig. 1). Kazakhstan is the second largest newly independent Commonwealth state. It possesses major fuel and power centers, including 20 electric power facilities that operate on the more than 300 kt (330,000 st) of coal extracted daily. These power stations supply Central Asia, the Urals and Western Siberia with much needed electricity. Kazakhstan plays a critical role in Central Asia as it serves as both the regions' economic and political hubs. While Kazakhstan already contains a robust and diversified minerals industry, the government is actively pursuing foreign investment to boost production capacity and improve efficiencies in operations. A primary objective of the Kazak government is the expansion of metal processing facilities to improve the country's long-term export potential. Since 1991, international mining companies have found the investment climate of Kazakhstan relatively favorable. This is due to tremendous efforts by government officials to create sufficient investment legislation and a national minerals policy, while eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks common to most other former Soviet republics.

"The Sä Dena Hes Joint Venture Mill was designed to process 450,000 tonnes per year of ore grading 11.3% lead and 13.2% zinc.Run of mine ore is crushed in a jaw crusher and then ground in a closed circuit SAG mill and ball mill. A standard differential float in conventional flotation cells produces quality lead and zinc concentrates. Dewatering of concentrates is achieved using high rate thickeners, lamella clarifiers and pressure filters. Process water is 100% recycle.Plant design was based on metallurgical test work performed on drill core samples. The plant is operating at better than design specifications.INTRODUCTIONSä Dena Hes Joint Venture was formed in 1989 to develop the Sa Dena Hes lead/zinc sulphide mine, located approximately 45 km north of the Town of Watson Lake, Yukon. The mine is owned by a Joint Venture partnership between the operator, Curragh Inc. (87.5%) and Hillsborough Resources Limited (12.5%).The project was completed in a record ten months, working throughout the severe Yukon winter and through an abnormally wet spring and summer. The first truckloads of concentrate were shipped from the mine on August 1, 1991.The mill currently processes 550,000 tonnes of ore per year grading 6.9% lead and 11.5% zinc. Ore is crushed in a jaw crusher and ground to 60% passing 75 microns in a closed circuit operation of one SAG mill and ball mill. Using conventional flotation cells a 150,000 tonnes of concentrate is produced in a year with lead concentrate grading 78% lead and a zinc concentrate grading 60% zinc at overall recoveries of 89% and 90% respectively.Concentrates dewatering is accomplished using high rate thickeners, clarifiers and pressure filters. The lead concentrate and zinc concentrate contain 5.4% water and 7.8% water respectively. Concentrates are trucked to Skagway, Alaska for subsequent shipping to overseas smelters."

Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost, and significantly influence dragline productive time. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result frequent rope changes are required at a substantial cost and time loss to the operation. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline performance, there are no industry-wide standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The life of drag and hoist ropes depends on: (1) rope construction, which should closely match requirements of the specific application, (2) correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria, so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of operation, and (3) rope operating conditions and its maintenance. The study presented in this paper was intended to address the above points, based on a survey and assessment of the present industry practice.

"During the summer of1989, Les Mines Selbaie, with the cooperation of Université Laval initiated a research project to evaluate the column flotation technology for its concentrator near Joutel, Quebec. The experimental work involved both a 5 cm by 11 m laboratory column and a 45 cm by 10 m home-made pilot unit Amenability tests were conducted using both units on various streams of the plant. Results showed that columns are not suitable for the copper cleaning circuit because the loss of precious metals, associated with the rejected pyrite, overcome the improved copper metallurgy. On the other hand, column testing at the zinc circuit showed improved zinc selectivity.Scale-up testing was', therefore, conducted on the first zinc cleaner concentrate using the laboratory-size column. The influence of variables such as porous parger grain size, wash water flow rate, airflow rate and froth depth values on column performance was' first assessed. Scale-up parameters were then determined using the optimal operating conditions from the previous tests. Simulation facilitated the determination of the most convenient plant-scale column arrangement.A number of conclusions concerning the experimental determination of scale-up parameters are also presented."
