A special high-pressure Burnett-type compressibility apparatus was constructed and used to determine compressibility factors for pure helium, pure nitrogen, and nine helium-nitrogen mixtures containing 89.47, 79.04, 69.69, 60.09, 49.24, 41.02, 30.99, 20.53, and 10.67 mole-percent helium. A total of 161 runs were made consisting of 2,355 observed pressures. Data were obtained at 0°, 25°, and 50° C and at pressures to 1,000 atmospheres. A power series in the reciprocal volume, commonly called a Leiden series, is used to represent the compressibility factors. Three parameters in the series are required to represent helium, five parameters to represent nitrogen, and from three to five parameters to represent the mixtures. Compressibility factors are believed to be accurate to better than 0.1 percent over the entire pressure, temperature, and composition range.

This paper presents results of an investigation on acoustic emission characteristics of granite, sandstone and rock-like material in the unconfined compression and tensile tests. Both the acoustic emission signature and stress-stain curve are analysed in the experiments.The experimental results show that different acoustic emission characteristics are observed at different stress and deformation stages in unconfined compression and tensile testing. Extensive and unstable acoustic emission changes may be interpreted as indicating failure of the rock.

The Mitsubishi process is the sole pyrometallurgical process for the continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrates and has been successfully operated around the world. The development of calcium ferrite slag (CaO-FeOx-Cu20), the so-called "C-slag", has enabled continuous converting from matte to blister copper in the commercial scale operations. Commercial interests in the slag led to many papers over the CaO-FeOx slag. However, CU2O- bearing slag has not been studied well due to experimental difficulties. The authors have quantified the thermodynamic properties ofthe CaO-FeOx-Cu2O system. The results have been utilized to analyze various issues related to the converting furnace, such as the magnetite precipitation from the slag or from blister copper and to develop better controlling criteria for the continuous converting operation.

The effects of aeration on an aqueous suspension of pyrrhotite were studied and their results correlated with flotation tests using xanthates as collectors. The effects of copper activation and of pH variation were determined and possible mechanisms postulated. PYRRHOTITE has long been considered a gangue mineral to be eliminated as tailing in the treatment of various sulphide ores. However, in recent years the world-wide lack of sulphur resources has called attention to this mineral as a potential source of both sulphur and iron. Its importance as an economic mineral, however, has not been particularly emphasized. For this reason very little is known about its response to flotation, except that it can be depressed easily in alkaline circuit, by long aeration,1,2 addition of oxidizing agents,3 or by starch.' The object of this work was to study the floatabil-ity of pyrrhotite. This includes the effect of oxidation by aeration, of copper activation, and of change in pH. Preparation of the Pyrrhotite Sample: It was desirable that the highest grade of pyrrhotite obtainable be used for this experiment, since the presence of other minerals could affect the surface properties.5 However, no pyrrhotite was available as crystals, and massive deposits of hydrothermal origin commonly contain considerable amounts of chalcopyrite. Pyrrhotite concentrate was, therefore, prepared from a sulphide deposit occurring near Aitkin, Minn. The deposit is of pyrometamorphic nature consistirlg mainly of pyrrhotite and pyrite with graphite, silicates, and carbonates as gangue. The ore, already crushed through 3 mesh when received, was screened at 65 mesh and the undersize discarded. The oversize was crushed through rolls, and then stage-ground dry in an Abbe porcelain mill, the —65 mesh portion being screened out after every 15 min of grinding until all the material passed through this size. The ground product was then concentrated with a drum-type dry magnetic separator. The rougher concentrate was cleaned twice and then demagnetized. The final product was split in a Jones splitter and stored in air-tight bottles. Microscopic examination of the concentrate showed that it was relatively clean and free of pyrite, locked particles, and gangue. By means of the krypton gas adsorption method," the specific surface was determined to be 3000 cm2 per g. The chemical and screen analyses of the final concentrate are given in Tables I and II respectively. It is a well-recognized fact that the oxidation of some sulphide ores during stockpiling, grinding, and conditioning affects their flotation behavior. The problem of oxidation may become serious in the case of pyrrhotite, since this is known to be more easily oxidized than many other sulphides. To ascertain the extent of oxidation, an experiment was carried out by aerating an aqueous suspension of pyrrhotite with air, oxygen, and nitrogen as follows. A 300-g sample of pyrrhotite in 2700 ml of water was agitated and simultaneously aerated in a Fager-gren-type laboratory flotation machine. A Precision wet test meter was connected to the air inlet valve, the flow rate of the gas being kept constant at 0.3 cu ft per min throughout the experiment. Samples of approximately 30 ml each were taken from the cell at 0, 4, 10, 20, 35, 60, and 90 min. After the pH was taken, each sample was filtered and the filtrate was analyzed for total iron and sulphur. The iron was determined colorimetrically by the thioglycolate method using a green filter.' The filtrate was oxidized with bromine to convert all of the soluble sulphur compounds into sulphate and this was determined with a Parr turbidimeter." When aeration tests were made in alkaline circuit, calcium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide was added at regular intervals to maintain a constant pH. A similar procedure was followed in an experiment to determine the abstraction of copper. ion by pyrrhotite. In this case various quantities of cupric chloride were added. The filtrate from each sample taken was analyzed for copper, total iron, and sulphur. The carbamate method with a green filter was used for the copper analysis,' since this method could tolerate a considerable amount of iron in the solution. A pneumatic cell, made from a 350-ml fritted glass Buechner funnel, was used for this experiment. The detail of the assemblage has been described elsewhere." In the present work a stainless steel baffle was inserted in the cell. This baffle overcame the tendency for the coarse pyrrhotite particles to be swirled around the wall of the cell and thus fail to collect in the froth. A 50-g sample of pyrrhotite was added to the cell which contained 260 ml of water. When pretreat-ment of the sample was desired, reagents, such as activator and pH regulator, were then added and the pulp was conditioned for a specified conditioning time. Prior to the addition of the collector approximately 15 ml of the solution were removed for pH measurement and for iron and sulphur analyses. Copper when used as activator was also determined. Collector and frother were then added and the pulp was conditioned for an additional 2 min. Air was admitted to the cell and the froth removed. The separation required from 4 to 6 min, depending on the characteristics of the froth. The float and non-float products were filtered, dried, weighed, and assayed for iron.

The review of mineral activities in Minnesota arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Minnesota continued to lead the nation in iron ore production in 1989 with more than 70% of the market. At no time in the past 50 years has Minnesota's iron ore market share fallen below 50%. 1989 production was provided by six iron ore pellet operations and one high-grade iron ore mine. Most American steel companies are represented in these operations through whole or partial ownerships in Minntac (USS), Minorca (Inland), Eveleth Mines (Armco and Rouge), Hibbing Taconite (Bethlehem), and LTV Steel and National Steel Pellet. A seventh iron ore pellet producer started up in 1989 when Cyprus Minerals acquired the assets of bankrupt Reserve Mining Co. This operation, with first production scheduled for 1990, will be the only non-steel company captive operation in Minnesota. Encouraging minerals development In an attempt to stimulate further and additional mineral development in Minnesota, the state's legislature established a Minerals Coordinating Committee (MCC). This committee is comprised of the Department of Natural Resources-Division of Minerals, the Minnesota Geological Survey, the Natural Resources Research Institute, and the Mineral Resources Research Center. The Committee has sponsored and coordinated various projects. Among these MCC-sponsored projects are glacial drift geochemistry with an emphasis on gold and indicator minerals, accelerated geologic mapping, continued aeromagnetic surveying of Minnesota, greenstone geochemistry, structure and stratigraphy of the Duluth complex, and drill core and exploration data acquisition from past exploration programs. Regarding drill core, the Division of Natural Resources completed construction of its third core library building in Hibbing. These data and core are available for public examination.

"The ways of the world be many and most of the ways be tried, you follow in the footsteps of others till you come to the great divide". These words, written by Robert Service a long time ago, come to mind when I think of our original attitude upon entering into a contract with the International Nickel Company to sink the deepest shaft in the world outside of the Union of South Africa. This shaft was to be sunk to a depth of 7,137 feet from surface, and while it was recognized by all concerned to be a somewhat unusual undertaking in our part of the world, the fact that quite a few shafts had already been sunk to this depth in South Africa probably gave us the feeling that we were following in the footsteps of others. In retrospect, because this shaft was being sunk under entirely different conditions than those existing in South Africa, we were in fact venturing into an entirely new area of endeavour without properly recognizing this fact. It has occurred to me that others considering a similar type of job could benefit from our experience, especially in an assessment of the risks involved and how they compare to those encountered in an ordinary shaft. For comparison purposes, I would define an ordinary shaft as being sunk to a depth of 5,000 ft or less, and a deep shaft as one being sunk to a depth of between 5,000 ft and 8,000 ft. China's coal energy development, characteristics and relationships with atmospheric pollution are reported. Atmospheric pollution sources from coal combustion are analyzed. Some of the projects for clean coal combustion in the Shanghai area include use of industrial briquettes, investigation of coal combustion additives, and blending combustion of coal with industrial wastes. Coal is China's main energy source, and 80 percent of China's annual coal production is used in combustion devices. Coal-flue gases from the domestic stoves and industrial furnaces are the main atmospheric pollution source. China's atmospheric pollution is, in fact, the pollution of coal-flue gases. To 2000, in view of China's energy needs as a developing nation, the atmospheric pollution from coal combustion must receive our utmost attention.

"AbstractA commercial method .has been developed for controlling the texture of chrysotile asbestos fibers so that they may possess properties comparable with natural sem1-harsh fibers for use in wet •processes.The physical properties of the soft, silky and slimy fibers are partially altered by a flash-heating process which removes a portion of the molecular water.The heat-treated fibers show an improvement in filterability, an increase in bulk, absorption, and surface area and better electrical properties, such as volume resistivity.IntroductionCHRYSOTILE ASBESTOS fibers are found in nature having varying degrees of texture, referred to as soft, semi-harsh, and harsh. Fibers of each type of texture have inherent characteristics which directly affect their usefulness to industry. Visual differences are apparent under a microscope where it is seen that the soft-textured fibers have a silky, serpentine or wavy appearance, whereas the harsh-textured fibers are coarser and spicular. Semi-harsh fibers, of course, have properties intermediate between these extremes.Fankuchen and Schneider ( l) have shown by the use of low-angle X-ray scattering that the diameter of the harsh type of chrysotile fiber is somewhat greater than tha of the soft variety. Surface area measurements on various chrysotiles of different textures tend to confirm their findings. By nitrogen adsorption methods, it was found that the surface areas of soft types of chrysotile asbestos are approximately 23M2 / g whereas for the harsh types they are as low as 11M2/g."

Rotary kilns, varying in construction, are used in a variety of processes. Products differ and operating conditions vary accorcling to economic requirements. All of these variables influence the degree of instrumentation and type of control necessary or profitable to install. Products fired in rotary kilns are the results of combined temperature and time treatment and the interrelation of these two factors should be kept constantly in mind in the perusal of this paper. Measurements of Kiln Temperature The securing of proper temperatures within the rotary kiln, either of the charge or of the kiln lining in the high fire zone, are basic objectives of kiln operation; therefore the measurement of these high-temperature conditions merits first consideration. For these measurements, radiation pyrometers, properly designed and protected, have proved adequate, particularly where records ox automatic control are desired, while Optica1 pyometers may serve as portable indicators. Light-sensitive devices or photoelectric cells in this service are capable of producing records as well as certain forms of automatic control. High-temperature measuring devices for rotary-kiln work should have the measuring unit protected from dust, as a continued accumulation of deposit would lower the readings. Fig. 1 shows a typical application of radiation equipment to a rotary kiln, mounted far enough away from the sighting hole through the kiln hood to be protected From puffs or stingouts and with a sighting tube having a series of settling chambers, to prevent dust from reaching the lens. Although dust conditions inside the kiln itself usually fluctuate considerably and have their effect upon the readings at that moment, such effects are not cumulative and show as a continuous fluctuation in the temperature indicated, provided the radiation unit and recorder are responsive to such slight and rapid temperature fluctuations. The ambient temperature to which a measuring unit is subjected fluctuates from possibly 0" to over zoo°F., therefore these changes should have no effect upon the final reading or upon the life of the measuring unit. A very narrow sighting angle is desirable, so that measurement of temperature may be made as far as possible into the high fire zone without effect of the flame temperature. There should some sighting means on the measuring unit, so that the proper field may be viewed. Measurement of wall temperature taken at a point where the charge has just left the wall is less affected by dusting conditions than when taken elsewhere. Factors influencing Temperature Table I gives an outline of the factors that produce kiln temperatures and comments on the possibility of measurement and control. CONSIDERABLE uncertainty is revealed in the literature regarding the nature of the titanium minerals which make up the bulk of the heavy, opaque fractions of numerous beach sand deposits of the world. An investigation was made, therefore, of beach sand concentrates of North Carolina, Florida, Brazil, and India. Magnetic concentration, X-ray, and microscope data were obtained which show that these concentrates consist essentially of ilmenite and its alteration products. The alteration, brought about by oxidation and leaching of iron values, has resulted in upgrading the ores to a range of 56 to 64 pct TiO2, as compared with 52.7 pct in ilmenite of theoretical composition. Conclusions drawn regarding the nature of the dominant titanium-bearing mineral in beach sand deposits have been based mainly on chemical composition, specific gravity, and petrography. This material has usually been referred to as ilmenite or weathered ilmenite. It has also been referred to as arizonite because in chemical composition it resembles an occurrence in Arizona which was described by Palmer1 in 1909.

The Hornsilver lead-zinc property was examined by the Bureau in 1942 and again in 1944. A project was started on the property in April 1946 and completed in January 1947. Silver was first discovered in this district in 1883, and while complete production records are not available, it is known that a substantial tonnage of high-grade silver ore was shipped before 1887. All of the ore was mined from surface or near-surface workings. When the high-grade oxidized ore was exhausted, the district became inactive and remained so until the 1920's. In 1928 and 1929 some activity was shown in the district, but the Hornsilver mine was not reopened until November 1937. Between 1939 and 1946, the mine produced about 16,000 tons of ore of 531 ounces of gold, 283 ounces of silver, over a million pounds of load, and nerdy 2 million pounds of zinc. The property is now controlled by the Era Mining & Development Co., which has acquired the Last Chance and Ella groups of claims, in addition to the Hornsilver mine.

"A longwall mining method is a productive mining method of coal extraction that involves the complete removal of large, rectangular panels of coal. Since this method causes deformations through the overlying strata to the ground surface, the surface- and ground-water regime above the longwall panels may be adversely affected and drained into the lower strata. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of longwall mining subsidence on surface- and ground-water systems.This study is a site-specific hydrogeologic analysis conducted before, during, and after panel retreat at a site located over two selected longwall panels in the Pittsburgh coal seam in Greene County of Pennsylvania. Mine subsidence causes fractures in the overlying strata and enlarges bedding plane separations, increasing the effective porosity and storativity of the overlying strata. Generally, the water in deeper aquifers located in the lower fractured zone drains into the mine void due to the vertical fractures. Moreover, the water level does not recover after longwall mining (but may recover when the mine is flooded). The upper aquifers over the thick aquitard layers may maintain the water level or drop slightly during longwall mining and recover very quickly. The reason is that the underlying aquiclude layer has less change in porosity and permeability after longwall mining (Carver, 1994).A groundwater flow model-MODFLOW was used to predict the water table contours for the periods of pre- and post-mining conditions. The hydraulic gradients of post-subsidence became larger outside the panels and smaller inside the panels than that of the pre-subsidence. The groundwater hydraulic heads above the longwall panel dropped a maximum 50 ft in the study panels. The shallows monitoring wells that were less than 50 ft deep from the surface were deeply affected by longwall mining subsidence. For the intermediate wells that were more than 85 ft deep from the surface, where strata movement acted as a unit during longwall mining subsidence, there were little impacts of longwall mining on the intermediate wells in the study area. For the deep wells that were located below the Waynesburg sandstone, the water was drained to the underlying strata or even into the mine gob."

"The composition, properties and structure of taphole clay with high strength and friendly surrounding used in a new blast furnace with 3800 M3 volume was studied. The developed taphole clay had been applied in the blast furnace for four months, pouring times were 11-13 every day, flowing rate of hot iron was 7.5 t/min and the consumption of taphole clay was 0.49Kg per ton iron, which can make the new blast furnace attach the designed production quickly and decrease the cost of hot iron. The taphole clay is easy to be opened in the channel of hot iron which can be remained in stable shape under the corrosion of slag or hot iron, and it dose not produce poisonous smoke in yellow or dark color in the use process. The development of new taphole clay is useful to improve the work surrounding of the blast furnace.IntroductionIn the iron-making process, the taphole clay's function is filling up the taphole and protecting the formation as well as the growth of the clay in the blast furnace, maintaining the enough taphole depth; simultaneously it is easily to open a hole and knock out the clay. The taphole clay has a good performance of molten slag and hot iron resistance. The traditional taphole clay uses coal tar or carbolineum as a binder, and the performance of taphole clay is good, but it has the black and yellow poisonous smoke, which is harmful for work condition. Through the investigation on the binder's composition and poisonous performance of taphole clay, the environmental taphole clay is developed by some foreign companies, which is named the third generation product with benzene is less than 300ppm, and it has been used in European steel companies. This application of the taphole clay with high strength and environment-friendly using in 3800m3 blast furnace is introduced and the performance is discussed and analyzed in this paper."

Introduction.—In the year 1885, the writer signed a contract to take charge of the reopening and developing of the celebrated old mines of " El Cerro Rico de Potosi." Two years earlier, an Eng- . lish firm of engineers had made a very glowing report on the property. In the summer of 1885, telegrams arrived from the parties in charge of operations at the mountain, claiming the finding of one of the old veins, with an average richness of over 200 ounces to the ton. In the fall of 1886, the author first personally visited Potosi, but found neither the English report nor the telegram borne out by the facts. After an expenditure of over half a million of dollars and more than three years of continuons hard work, the writer succeeded in unwatering and developing one of the principal old veins of the mountain. This vein, called "Cotamitos," now yields ores of about 75 ounces to the ton, and the old historic mountains of Potosi may be said to have again fairly entered the list of silver-producers. The experience of the author, during his residence in Bolivia, and data obtained from Sr. Don F. Avelino Aramayo, form the basis of this description. POTOSI. Etymology of the Name.—The Quichuá (pronounced Keechna) Indians, known to North American students as the " Incas," although the word "inca" merely signifies ''king," or "chief," of the Quichuás, called the mountain "Sumac-orcko," or the beautiful mountain." Eighty-three years before the discovery of the mountain by the Spaniards, the inca, or king, Huaina Ccapac, travelling from Cantumarca to Calque-Porco, saw the mountain of Potosf and, admiring its grandeur and beauty, said that within its bowels there was, no doubt, much silver. He ordered his vassal* to work the mines. The FeOX-CaO-SiO2 base slag at intermediate oxygen partial pressures is very often used in non-ferrous smelting processes. This slag would also contain Al2O3 and MgO because these compounds are normal components in the ore and the refractory of a furnace. The objective of the present work is to determine the effect of Al2O3 or MgO addition on the liquidus temperatures of the plain FeOX-CaO-SiO2 slags in the atmosphere between intermediate pO2 of 10-6 and that of iron saturation at 1250 and 1300 °C. The experiments were carried out at given mass%CaO/(mass%CaO+mass%SiO2) ratios ranging from 0 to 1 and at spinel-tridimite double saturation. The experimental results show that the effect of Al2O3 or MgO addition on the plain FeOX-SiO2-CaO slag is not uniform and depends on the content of Al2O3 or MgO, the oxygen partial pressure and the mass% CaO/mass% SiO2 ratio. It is apparent that Al2O3 or MgO addition enlarges the spinel or wustite saturation area at almost all the oxygen partial pressures and temperatures of this research. The obtained phase diagrams will be useful in the metallurgical industry to assist in the selection of slag chemistry, operation condition and development of new processes.

The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) is building an international, multi-stakeholder community to advance the availability and use of standards and industry guidelines for the global mining community. Standards and guidelines are key strategic tools for operational excellence, enabling companies to move forward with efficient, innovative operations with reduced risk. Launched in May 2012, the GMSG is the first international center to bring together information, resources and collaborative projects for mining standards and guidelines, in an open, knowledge-sharing forum. The GMSG is supported by five partner organizations providing outreach and helping to guide GMSG activities: the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the Surface Mining Association for Research and Technology (SMART). GMSG was formed under the CIM Surface Mining Society, though its mandate extends to include underground mining as well. ?SME is supporting the GMSG as a key international activity to advance the implementation of standards and guidelines in our industry, and to provide a forum for our members to access, and contribute to, projects and information to assist their operations,? said SME Executive Director David Kanagy. ?We see the GMSG as a good example of ways the major mining associations can work together for the benefit of all our members.? The GMSG charter encompasses all standards and guidelines that apply to mining; however, a number of subject areas are now being spearheaded by six working groups, namely: ? Access and usage of data from mobile mining equipment onboard systems. ? Operational safety. ? Situational awareness (namely, a unified equipment operator interface). ? Underground operations. ? Asset management and operations data definitions and KPIs. ? Energy in communition.

ALTHOUGH many structural and kinetic investigations have been made for alloys of iron and nickel, only meager data exist from thermodynamic investigations. The purpose of this note is to estimate the free energy of the Fe-Ni solid solutions from thermodynamic data available for ternary alloys containing iron and nickel. The lack of a description of the thermodynamic behavior for the Fe-Ni system has required the structural and kinetic analyses of the system to assume some form of solution behavior, usually regular, e.g., the mar-tensite transformation analysis of Kaufman and Cohen, 1 consistent with the limited thermodynamic data. Indications that this system could exhibit ideal solution departures might have been suggested by the large deviations from additivity rules observed in the density and lattice-parameter measurements of Jette and Foote2 who interpreted this in terms of possible solute-solvent interactions. Later Turkdogan et al. 3 and more recently Ward and wright 4 found a minimum in the graphite solubility in liquid Fe-Ni solutions near the concentration of FeNi3 with deviations from linearity persisting at all concentrations. This was interpreted by Ward and wright4 to indicate negative heats of solution and was suggestive of short-range ordering. The infinitely dilute activity coefficient of carbon (?oC) was also observed by smith5 to pass through a maximum near the FeNi3 concentration in Fe-Ni solid solutions. Recent investigations of the liquid solutions over the entire concentration range by Zellars et a1.' and Speiser et a1.," using vapor-pressure determinations, revealed both negative departures from Raoult's law and a nonregular solution behavior. The solid alloys have been studied by Oriani 8 and Kubaschew-ski and von Goldbeck6 employing gaseous H2/H2O equilibria with Fe and FeO. Both investigations were in substantial agreement, indicating very small departures from ideality. However, Oriani observed the formation of Fe3O4 (instead of FeO) at XFe= 0.441 which severed the equilibrium and precluded experimental investigation of the nickel-rich alloys. Heat-capacity and heat-content measurements have been evaluated by Montgomery10 and found generally unsatisfactory for gleaning thermodynamic information. This is due to the unknown final states of the alloys caused by the interference of the martensite transformation on cooling iron-rich concentrations and superlattice formation, magnetic transformation, and the varied heat treatments used by investigators of nickel-rich concentrations. As an alternative to the experimental difficulties, indirect estimates of the solid-solution behavior have been made by Fleischer and Elliott11 and Smith et a1.12 From their measurements of the solubility of Fe-Ni alloys in liquid lead, Fleischer and Elliott calculated the nickel activity (aNi) (and integrated for aFe) by assuming: 1) liquid lead has no solubility in solid Fe-Ni alloys, 2) Henry's law is obeyed throughout the liquid lead-rich phase (0— 12 at. pct Nil, and 3) Henry's law constant is independent of relative iron and nickel concentrations. System objectives and design criteria for an in-mine visual personnel paging system are discussed. Display technologies are evaluated and tradeoffs leading to display selection are described. The prototype dispatcher's console, battery/receiver box and visual display assemblies are functionally described. The report includes circuit descriptions, schematics, parts lists and equipment cabinet drawings for the three assemblies. The report concludes with an estimate of the manufacturing cost for each assembly.
