This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the Items is confidential. It present's analytical data for 4,608 samples, representing the products of 101 companies. The samples were collected during December 1956, January and February 1957. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the Notional Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the post 10 years is given on page 5.

One of the major concerns of ground control in a coal mine is the prevention of roof, pillar and floor failures of the mine entry. To better design and evaluate the stability of a mine entry within a certain level of confidence, a reliability approach is introduced. The advantage of using the reliability approach, rather than the conventional safety-factor (SF) method, is that it not only takes variability of both rock/coal properties and stress into consideration but also assesses the stability of each component and the mine entry as a whole. Therefore, it is anticipated that by using this approach the current ground-control technology in a coal mine will convey a better sense of confidence. The results of a case study show that there is a significant difference in mine entry stability between the current design method and the reliability approach.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has studied solvent extraction as a means of concentrating the mineral components in coal. Solubilities of a number of American coals were determined using abietic acid as a solvent. The effect of rank on solubility was investigated, and maximum solubility was found with coals of intermediate rank. Vitrinite is the most soluble petrographic component; fusinite, micrinitc, and exinite are nearly insoluble. Spore exines also have a low solubility. Abietic acid is a hydrogen donor and reduces pyrite to ferrous sulfide. Mild hydrogenation of high-molecular-weight fragments of the coal structure to those of lower molecular-weight probably contributes to the solvent action. Even where solubility of the coal substance exceeds 90 percent, contamination of the mineral matter with coal makes identification of the mineral components difficult. Further separation might be possible by the application of float and sink techniques to the residue. INTRODUCTION Work n the solvent extraction of coal is conducted to recover commercially useful products and to characterize coal;. and obtain information on their structure. Some coals, particularly those of low rank, contain waxes, resins, and humic acids which can be removed by solvent extraction and find varied industrial uses. In World War II, solvent extraction of coal was conducted on a commercial scale in Germany to obtain a low-ash feed material for hydrogenation and to produce electrodes carbon for the aluminum industry.4 5/

"Rational exploration requires the prior selection of areas possessing excellent geological potential and minimum hazards to commercial development . Within an over-all strategy of grass-roots exploration, two procedures for selecting areas for (i) coal and (ii) metals exploration are described. The procedures explicitly balance infrastructure requirements and environmental concerns for areas of geological merit not alienated in parks and reserves. Through consensus, priorities are attached to those areas meriting closer scrutiny and field reconnaissance.IntroductionMining companies need to know that having made a potentially economic discovery, they will be allowed to develop it with minimum delay and at reasonable cost. The environment for exploration in British Columbia is complex and recent experience suggests that conditions are not becoming any easier. Conflicts over land use issues, preservation and economic development are common. The high cost of exploration requires that the risks should be offset where possible by: (i) carefully selecting the areas in which to work (ii) conducting operations in a responsible manner, and (iii) working cooperatively with the community of interests. This paper concerns the first action: prior selection of areas.To aid exploration planning at Suncor, a procedure was developed to grade those areas of the province possessing favourable geology according to the ease with which a mine might be developed . This had to be done within the constraints of the company's over-all approach to exploration. This emphasizes ""grass-roots"" exploration of self-generated projects in British Columbia. In addition, having selected a favourable belt of rocks, it is intended to persevere there while steadily adding to the accumulated data base and local experience. Hence, it is intended to concentrate on an area. This implies a long-term commitment to an area which in turn increases the importance of the original selection.Suncor's search is directed to finding base and precious metals in intrusive and volcanic environments, and export quality coal."

THE metallographic structures most frequently encountered in rifle barrels, and which are illustrated by the accompanying photomicrographs, fall naturally into two groups, distinguished by the method used to produce in the stock a physical condition having the requisite properties. The first group consists 'of "rolled" barrels; that is, barrels subjected to hot working by rolling in or near the critical range. In the second group, the stock, which is smaller in diameter than the first, is upset to form the butt end and is then heat-treated by giving it a quench and a draw. These barrels will be referred to as "heat-treated" barrels. The structure of the rolled barrels resembles closely that of the same steel after annealing. There is the same network of excess ferrite outlining the grain boundaries, but the grains themselves are composed of sorbite rather than pearlite. The grain size is closely related to the rolling temperature. The critical-point curves of this grade of steel, which is approximately 0.50 to 0.60 per cent. of carbon and 1.00 to 1.30 per cent. of manganese, show a single very pronounced point between 1300° and 1350° F. (704° and 732° C.). Barrels rolled within this temperature range give an exceedingly fine grain, shown in Fig. 1. In fact, the grains may be so fine that, at a low magnification, they may be confused with the heat-treated structure discussed below, Fig. 6. A magnification of 500 diameters, however, will always resolve a rolled barrel into the characteristic structure, shown in Fig. 2. As the temperature is increased, the grains are found to be larger. If, on the other hand, the rolling temperature is below the critical range, the structure previous to rolling will not be obliterated, the only effect of rolling being to elongate the coarse sorbite grains in the direction of rolling, Fig. 3. This distortion is greatest at the muzzle. Heat-treated barrels are quenched in oil from above the critical range, which should give a martensitic structure, Fig. 4, but the presence of some troostite in the martensite is frequently noted when the quench has not been sufficiently drastic, Fig. 5. The structure brought about by the subsequent draw is not so striking, though quite as typical. It is sorbitic or sorbito-pearlitic, and under- a low magnification appears

"This paper deals with the description of the capabilities of a unique rotary coal cutting simulator which has been designed and fabricated at West Virginia University. It operates under the simulated mining conditions with in-situ stresses (horizontal and vertical stresses) being applied to a coal block of 18 in. x 15 in . x 6 in located in a suitably designed confining chamber. Cutting drum rotation can be varied from 1 to 40 rpm with the capability of stopping the drum after a predetermined number of rotations. Tests can be performed with four different bit angles, 15, 30, 45 and 60 degrees . A maximum of seven bits could be used in seven different orbits. Various cutting depths up to a maximum of 4 in. is possible.Monitoring devices constitute, Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs), pressure transducers, cascade Impactors, flow meters, flow controls and drum cutting speed. LVDTs are used to monitor the displacement of the coal block as well as the depth of cut. Pressure transducers are used to monitor the changes in pressure, both due to the thrust and due, to the intermittent cutting nature of the rotary cutting. Flow controls will be used to run the drum at a set rpm between 1 and 40 and to provide a different rate of advance. All the above mentioned devices can be operated and monitored by a fully automated control system. Six-stage cascade impactors are used to determine the mass distribution of dust along the rotation path of the drum. The fracture size, shape and Intensity can be studied by optical microscopy and the dust entrainment by using high speed photography.This equipment will basically be used to study the fracture mechanism in coal, associated with operating and in-situ parameters and further relate It to dust generation and entrainment In underground coal mines."

Until a year ago all isotope on-stream analysis utilised flow cells similar to those designed for conventional X-ray on-stream analysis. These systems incorporated a fairly complex sampling system necessary to present a representa- tive air-free sample of the main process to the flow cell. Maintenance costs and capital costs associated with flow cells and sampling systems have been generally high. Costs can be greatly reduced and reliability greatly increased, by using isotopes incorporated in immersible on-stream analysis probes which actually dip into the main process stream eliminating the need for sampling. A bonus of other advantages associated with immersible probes includes temperature stability and ease of calibration. This paper discusses details and results of the probe systems, justifica- tion for installing on-stream analysis, comparison of conventional X-ray and isotope techniques, and a brief survey of methods of analysis using radio- isotopes in on-stream elemental determinations.

Numerous investigatiolls have been carried out to determine the total oxygen present in the basic open-hearth bath and the results of these studies have clearly defined the factors controlling the bath oxidation during the period prior to deoxidation. On the other hand, very little is known concerning any changes in total oxygen content that may occur during deoxidation, tapping and teeming. The need for such additional data is continually becoming more apparent, since there is no strict technical basis for selecting any particular deoxidation practice. Many steels are made for the same purposes and to the same chemical analyses by widely differing practices. Apparently, each practice is satisfactory. However, it would be desirable to establish more definitely the effects and relative merits of the individual practices. Such information could be used to give a definite foundation for evaluating various types of deoxidation. In order to approach this problem, a study was made of the changes effected in the total oxygen content of several grades of steel by representative open-hearth deoxidation practices. To carry out such studies, it was necessary that a reliable testing procedure for determining the oxygen content of the steel bath and the ingot mold be established. Before entering on any extensive testing program, consideration was given to the available methods of obtaining steel samples and analyzing for oxygen. Testing Procedures It has been shown5-9 that in solidified steel oxygen may ekist in combination with iron, manganese, silicon, aluminum, titanium, chromium and carbon, depending upon the amount of these elements in the sample. In molten steel, however, there has been no direct distinction of the various oxides. Accordingly, the total active oxygen in the molten steel bath is designated by the symbol 0. During deoxidation, various oxides may be present either in solution in the molten steel or as solid or liquid inclusions. Any sample taken from the molten steel for oxygen analysis will include both the dissolved and the mechanically included oxygen. Similarly, samples of the solid steel product will also include the two forms of Oxygen' Methods of Samplirzg the Molten Steel Bath In order to obtain a true oxygen analysis from liquid steel, this element must be completely retained in the solidified sample. Several methods have been proposed whereby this stabilization can be effected. As early as 1915, Kichlinelo proposed a method for testing molten steel, in which the oxygen combined with some added aluminum. The Cross Harbor Freight Movement Project is currently in the Environmental Impact Statement phase. The scheme is addressing alternative solutions to transport freight across the Upper Bay of New York Harbor, from New Jersey through to Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. Amongst the alternatives being assessed are two tunnel options; from the north shore of Staten Island through to Brooklyn, and from Jersey City to Brooklyn. These tunnels are approximately 30,000 feet in length, and with up to17,000 feet under the Harbor, would make it one of the longest undersea crossings in the world.. The paper addresses the development of the project, from the Major Investment Study through to the current EIS, and describes the tunnel schemes that are being taken forward. The geological conditions that will be encountered, proposed construction methods, and the ventilation issues associated with such major undersea tunnels will all be described.

This report is the second of a series on roof movement in coal mines. The first (R. I. 3355)4/ dealt with convergence of roof and floor and movement of the surface accompanying and following extraction in a mechanized mine in which retreat of rib lines was rapid. The studies reported herein were made in a mine in which all the coal is loaded by hand, and movement of the rib lines was much slower in consequence. In choosing a site for this work, it was decided that the mine selected should have natural conditions akin to those of the first study and entirely different methods of working. To this end a cooperative agreement was made with the Crucible Fuel Co. through W. J. Whitaker, secretary, for conducting the work in the company's Crucible mine, operating in the Pittsburgh bed in Greene County, Pa. This paper gives an account of the methods used in the investigation, excerpts from the data obtained, and such generalizations as can be made.

In times of overproduction such as the operators have been struggling against for the past several years it is the practice of the oil industry to shut in certain wells in order to reduce the flood of oil. The purpose of this paper is to present certain variations in production of oil wells when the offset wells are shut in. The scope of the study has been confined to California fields, and more especially to those of the San Joaquin Valley. The accepted definition of a shut-in well is a well where production has been suspended by closing in the casinghead arid tubing or by cessation of pumping. The immediate effect of such a procedure, of course, is to reduce the oil production from the lease, which is the result desired. However, it appears that certain types of wells vary widely in production of oil, gas and gasoline after adjacent wells have been shut in, which variation has a very material effect on the ultimate recovery of oil from the property. The increase or decrease in the oil production itself may not be of sufficient volume to occasion comment, but wide fluctuations in the gas and gasoline recovery under the changed conditions arc of the utmost importance in the future recovery of oil. The scope of this paper includes: (I) the effect on producing oil wells of shutting in offset wells, the wells being studied in three groups arranged according to their relative stages of depletion; (2) probable source of excess gas and the effect on the ultimate recovery of oil; (3) suggested procedure when wells are shut in; (4) methods that could be employed to prevent undue migration of gas from the shut-in area; and (5) the need for future studies of the situation. Three Classes of Producing Oil Wells For the purposes of this paper producing wells in California have been arranged in three groups according to the age of the well, or to the relative stage of depletion of the producing zones. The first group consists of those wells with a high fluid level, or in other words those wells whose fluid levels are a considerable distance above the top of the perforations. Technological advancements in electronic sensors and mine-wide monitoring systems have improved remote monitoring and analysis of underground mining information. The effective use of . these systems for ground control applications, however, remains a challenge facing the mining industry. The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines is conducting research, utilizing real-time acquisition of rock mechanics data, to provide mine operators the means to rapidly identify and manage potentially hazardous ground conditions. The Bureau has installed a remote monitoring network in a Colorado coal mine to record Pressures from instruments installed in the roof and pi1lars of gateroads and from transducers on shield-legs along the face. The field data are being monitored at the Denver Research Center, 150 mi from the mine. A computer at the Center analyzes the field data and generates graphic displays, which permit detailed examination of mine-wide ground conditions in real-time. For the first time, Bureau researchers are able to perform real-time monitoring and analysis of rock mechanics data while mining is in progress. The data collection and display capabilities of the system were effectively used to identify and evaluate face stability problems at the mine.

The volumetric flow rate and the initial concentration of the copper sulfate solution influence the rate of reaction and, hence, the precipitation efficiency in a continuous launder cementation system. Using a model of such a system it was found that the precipitation efficiency is related to the two process parameters by the approximate expression [ log [1-n] = -[0.072 co 2.91 e – 0.511c o Q 1.15 ] N Q] where c is the initial concentration, Q, is the volumetric flow rate and N is the number of launders in the system. This expression agrees with an equation developed for the rate of the cementation process if it is assumed that the exponential factor represents the change in the surface area with concentration and the exponents 2.91-and 1.15 relate the hydrodynamic conditions and the surface concentration to co and Q. The experimental results are used to determine the values of a Precipitation Coefficient for any volumentric flow rate and initial concentration of solution. Knowing the Precipitation Coefficient, the total volume of launders that will result in a given precipitation efficiency can be calculated. It is established that maximum precipitation efficiencies are obtained for initial concentrations between 6.0 and 7.0 gpl and volumetric flow rates of approximately 350 m3 /hr Good agreement between calculated and actual launder volumes is obtained for a number of industrial operations for which a comparison is made.

An alternative method for dewatering slurry (tailings) is the use of geocontainers (MacTubes). The practical application of this work was carried out in the concentrator plant of the Raura Mining Company, located in the occidental mountain between Huánuco and Lima in Peru?s central highland. For the development of the research, the MATLAB R2012a software MGeST (v. 1.0) was used (Slurry Geocontainer Maccaferri Treatment). MGeST is used for sizing MacTubes, which allows determination of the most important design parameters, such as height (H), filling residual pressure (P1O ), strength of geosynthetic (T), and dehydration height. Compared with GeoCoPS v. 3.0, there is a maximum difference of 3% between the results obtained. The tailing to be treated in the MacTube have a specific weight of 11.62 kN/m3. After several tests it was determined that a MacTube of an apparent opening size of 0.22 mm was required for this specific weight.

The system of short term forecast of metal prices at LME is based on correlation between prices within the quarter forward and at the first place by economic parameters at the West, determining the consumption of metals. Such economic parameters are presented by data of indexes of Western World industrial production (WW IP), official data of IP and Dow Jones indexes at USA. For price forecast within the quarter forward (one day ahead, 3 day -65 days MA forward prices) are significant the changes of actual prices (official and close) at the past and the parameters of daily trade at LME at the past (futures turnover, open interest, LME stocks). It is developed subsystem of price forecast within the quarter forward based on analytical approach determining the relations between the participants of the market. It gives the opportunity to reduce the number of empirical coefficients at the model and receive good accuracy of forecast the MA prices and its direction at the future. Very important part of short term forecast is subsystem determining analytically the probability that the price forecasted for the next trading day will be the maximum or minimum daily price within the quarter forward. The thresholds probabilities are defined by identification the model at the past by maximal commercial efficiency. Such system was tested at the past at period since 2000 till 2005 and gives very high commercial results at operations on 1M forwards and hedging the sales of nonferrous metals traded at LME (primary aluminium, light alloys, nickel, copper, zinc, lead and tin).

Geologists in some underground gold mines collect grab samples from broken ore piles or trucks as a method of grade control. It is often known as muck sampling. Generally, the goal of grab sampling is to try and reconcile the mined grade at the ore source to the predicted grade and/or predict the mill feed grade. The mass of the sample collected is limited by health and safety issues, as well as by the capacity of the laboratory to process the samples within a given time frame. In general terms, grab sampling is known to be problematic because samplers tend to oversample the fines, and/or pick out high-grade fragments; surface sampling of piles does not test material within the pile; muck piles in development drives/faces are likely to be zoned due to the blasting sequence; high or low-grade material may preferentially segregate in the pile during mucking; the five per cent mass reject size of the material in muck piles is very large from underground blasting; some correlation usually exists whereby the larger fragments are enriched or depleted in the critical component of value; and the average error made in estimating the true stockpile grade is likely to be high. The method is prone to chronic fundamental sampling, grouping and segregation, delimitation, and extraction errors. Substantial warnings must be given about the use of grab sampling for grade control in gold mines. The method may appear to work sometimes, which can be attributed to a fine gold particle sizing and more disseminated distribution. As with all sampling methods, its appropriateness must be determined by ore characterization and heterogeneity testing to ensure the method suits the ore type.

The Bureau of Mines is developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in municipal incinerator residues. This report describes the first phase of the research, in which reliable methods for sampling and analyzing municipal residues were established and the composition and characteristics of the residues were determined. Samples were obtained from a variety of grate-type furnaces and also from a rotary kiln furnace. The samples were processed on a batch basis and separated into their natural categories by a variety of methods including screening, magnetic separation, air separation techniques, and handpicking. The main components of the residues were determined to be metal and metal oxides, glass, and ash.
