The Surface Mining Act of 1977 required a study by the National Academy of Sciences regarding the special mine reclamation requirements of Alaska. The status of mines operating and planned in Alaska will be presented. New mines opening in Alaska must establish a baseline inventory of plants and animals in the mine site area as well as determine pre-mining air and water quality. Current work in these areas will be summarized. Reclamation practices in Alaska and other Arctic countries as practiced currently will be described. A summary of current research in Alaska dealing with revegetation on surface mined lanais, re-establishment of animal populations, and water treatment processes necessary in this pristine environment will be discussed. Included will be future predictions of the direction of mine reclamation in Alaska as more mines enter the industry.

Rolling md annealing procedures are described for developing the (110) preferred orientation in tantalum for use as a thermionic-emission materinl where electrodes of a uniform high work function are needed. The development of a (110) [001] annealing texture is also reported. A preferential growth process due to low (110) gas-metal surface energy is considered in explanation of the observed growth of (110) grains. ThE growth of (110)-oriented grains in thin strips of rolled zone-refined tantalum, previously discussed briefly,' is reported together with more recent information on the formation of a (110)[001.] annealing texture, i.e., one where the [001] direction of each grain lies close to the rolling direction. The development of tantalum sheet with a (110) preferred orientation (position of [001 ] directions unspecified) is of importance as a thermionic-emission material in thermionic-energy converters. Since therm ionic-emission properties of cesium-coated crystals vary over a wide range depending on (hkl) a2-7 a single (hkl) preferred orientation is more useful than either several preferred orientations or none. Furthermore, the (110) preferred orientation yields the highest thermionic-emission density for a cesium coverage of less than a monolayer.5-7 A consideration of the stability of the grain structure needed at high operating temperatures suggests that the preferred orientation itself should be produced by annealing processes. Information on annealing textures in tantalum, however, is rather limited. Pugh and Hibbard 8 obtained (111)[112] and (lll)[112] components in a 1400°C recrystallization texture in 95 pct cold-rolled foil; these components were enhanced on annealing at 2500°C. Muller9 rolled 99.97 Ta to 90 pct reduction in thickness in the final stage and noted only a slight sharpening of the rolling texture, with some intensification of the (111)[112] component upon annealing at 1200°C. The experimental procedure followed in the present work stemmed from the idea of using possible differences in (hkl) surface energies to provide a small driving force for growth of grains having the lowest (hkl) surface energy.l0* This would mean using high-purity tantalum processed into thin sheet form and annealed at high temperatures either in a noncontaminating atmosphere or in one producing additional sample purification. EXPERIMENTAL Zone-Refined Tantalum. National Research Corp. tantalum in the form of 1/8-in.-diam rod and of 99.98 purity (53 ppm 0, 15 ppm N, and 8 ppm C) was zone-melted four times. The traversing speed was 4 mm per min. Such treatment increased the resistance ratio, R293k/R20K , where R293K is the resistance of the specimen at 20°C and R20K the re-resistance at liquid-hydrogen temperature, from a value of 25 for the initial rod to 175 for the zone-refined rod (the increase in the resistance ratio provides a measure of purification11,12). Part of a zone-refined rod was rolled unidirec-tionally to a strip 0.003 in. thick and 0.28 in. wide. Samples were given anneals in the range 1300" to 2100°C using ac conduction heating in an oil-free vacuum system. Recrystallization to small grains appeared to be complete at 1300°C. Large grains were formed at higher temperatures, but these were not entirely strain-free, some grains showing asterism in Laue X-ray patterns and some displaying a range in orientation. Part of the difficulty was caused by thermal expansion of the tantalum strip as it was held between fixed supports. "Abstract - In 1938, a body of goethite and hematite was discovered beneath Steep Rock Lake near Atikokan, northwestern Ontario. This was at the time the largest and richest undeveloped iron ore body in North America. Mining began in 1944, fast-tracked by the needs of World War II, and through 1979 produced 79 Mt of 56.5% Fe. Production required the diversion of the Seine River, draining of Steep Rock Lake, building of a railroad, and a 25-fold increase of the local population. The mining project, at the time, was the largest project of its type undertaken in Canada. The current concepts of sustainable mine development and mine closures have advanced considerably since the period of operation and closure of the Steep Rock mines, and those operations would probably not have met current expectations of sustainability. However, some of the post-closure aspects of the mines provide illustrations of components of sustainability, which could form part of a basis for a post-mining sustainable land use plan. It is concluded that some of these components were successful in meeting current expectations of sustainable use, and although some aspects are unique to the circumstances at the Steep Rock mines, others could be applicable at other mine sites."

Fifty years ago when Professor Yazawa began his career, the field of process simulation and modeling was in its infancy. Since then, tremendous progress has been made in our ability to model metal production flowsheets from mine to refined metal. This progress has come about by parallel developments in basic understanding of process chemistry and in computational techniques. This paper will review the progress made in process understanding and modeling in lead, zinc, and copper metallurgy from its inception to the present, and the role of Professor Yazawa's work in furthering this progress. Specific examples wi1\ be given for the sintering of lead concentrates, slag fuming, zinc concentrate roasting, flash smelting of copper, and pyro-extraction of zinc. Factors limiting further progress will be described.

"The effect of the copper and magnesium contents and quenching rate during quenching on the age hardening behavior of 2000 series aluminum alloys was investigated. For the higher copper-containing specimens as conventional alloys, like AA2024, precipitation of the stable phases increased as the quenching rate decreased under the as-quenched conditions. The maximum hardness after the artificial aging of air cooled(AC) specimens was much lower than that of the water quenched(WQ)specimens. On the other hand, for the lower copper-containing specimens, coarse precipitation did not increase even in the case of the AC. The age hardening behaviors of the WQ and AC were very similar such that the maximum hardness and aging rate were almost the same. Many parts of the fine precipitates that increased the hardness were thought to be the GPB zone or fine S’ phase for the WQ and relatively coarse S’ phase for the AC. From the calculated CCT(continuous cooling transformation)diagrams, the lower copper-containing specimens could maintain the copper and magnesium in the solid solution state during the AC, so they could be quenched at a rather slower quenching rate like the AC.INTRODUCTIONThe 2000 series aluminum alloys, containing copper and magnesium as the major chemical components, are some of the well-known heat treatable aluminum alloys. These alloys have a high quenching sensitivity, thus the age hardening ability of these alloys decreases with as low quenching rate. To prevent the decrease of the age hardening ability, quenching is done by a method such as water quenching, which is not very efficient in an industrial situation, because the method requires such large equipment. For these alloys, reducing the quenching sensitivity helps them to be produced in a rather convenient way. For example, 6000 series alloys such as A6063 have low quenching sensitivity, thus they could be quenched by only air cooling just after extrusion and they do not need water quenching. Based on these reasons, investigations of these alloys with high copper and magnesium contents have been conducted in the past to find a way to lower the quenching sensitivity by adding transition elements such as manganese, chromium and zirconium (Kanno, Suzuki, & Itoh, 1986; Suzuki & Itoh, 1986; Kanno, Sakuma, Muromachi, & Watanabe, 1988). However, very few studies have focused on the quenching sensitivity of the lower copper and magnesium containing alloys because of their usage for structural components with high strength, and most of the past studies have used only the fast quenching method like water quenching. On the other hand, from our recent results, there is a possibility to lower the quenching sensitivity of 2000 series alloys with lower alloying elements. In this paper, the effect of the copper and magnesium contents with lower alloying elements and quenching rate, especially in case of slower quenching rate than conventional quenching method, on the age hardening behavior of the 2000 series alloys is investigated by the hardness measurement, structure observation and thermal analysis."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) research simplified an earlier hydrogen chloride (HCI) leach-sparge process developed by the USBM to recover reduction-grade alumina from domestic kaolin clay. Improvements were made by decreasing the initial leaching acid concentration from 25 to 20 pet, decreasing the leaching time from 1 to 2 h to 15 to 30 min, eliminating the solvent extraction step for Fe removal, and eliminating the step to recover the AI content of the bleedstream circuit. A 10-cycle bench-scale experiment of the simplified process showed that the ferric chloride (FeC13) concentration built up to 9.3 g/L in the recycle stream. This did not interfere with any of the unit operations or final alumina product purity because Fe forms stable soluble chloride complexes when sparged with HCI and is easily washed from the large aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH) crystals. The reduced leaching time and acid concentration did not decrease Al extraction.

The removal of the refractoriness of a gold bearing pyrite- arsenopyrite ore is studied. Flotation concentrates were prepared and leached with a dilute acidic ferric sulfate solution. The elemental sulfur film which forms on arsenopyrite in the oxidation process is not responsible for the low rate of the arsenic dissolution observed. A positive effect on the leaching rate is observed when Ag' is added. This pretreatment eliminates the refractory nature of concentrates.

The Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace, Bruceton, Pa., was operated to determine the feasibility of replacing part of the burden coke requirements with solid fuels injected directly into the smelting zone. This report describes preliminary experiments and information resulting from such an interchange. These experiments were made on an all-sinter burden, using two parts sinter to one part fuel. Anthracite fines were injected intermittently into the smelting zone of the furnace by compressed air through auxiliary tuyeres. The interval between injection periods ranged from 5 to 15 minutes. A maximum of 28 percent of the stock column coke bur-den was replaced. This percentage replacement caused furnace malfunction, but the overall percentage of these experiments indicated that 20 to 24 percent of the coke requirements could be replaced in this way. The metallurgical coke consumption was decreased by as much as 377 pounds (25.3 percent) per ton of pig metal produced. Buckwheat anthracite No.4 was used in this experiment; however, such solids as bituminous coal or coke fines also could be used. The frequency as well as the quantity of solid fuel injected has a direct bearing on furnace performance.

Two large 34 ½ foot diameter mills have seen seven years of continuous operation before massive fracturing occurred on one of the trunnion cones. These fractures were discovered when liner changes were made. Four modes of failure were identified, three of the modes combining to cause a large circumferential tear in the 4-inch cone plate. A theoretical account is made of the modes of fracture and comparison made with field results. New material was used to repair the fractured cone, and the complete repair took ten weeks. The repair was monitored and lasted twenty-six weeks before the newly designed structure was available.

Flotation tests were conducted with galena, quartz and with synthetic mixtures of the two, in different ranges of grain size, and with different process parameter variants. Physico-chemical analyses were also carried out on surface energy and on xanthate adsorption on galena with different grain sizes. Reference will also be made to hydrodynamics, interfacial chemistry and the influence exerted by grain size in flotation.

La incidencia de silicosis en algunos asientos mineros, conlleva la necesidad de un estudio evaluativo del departamento de Higiene industrial sobre aquellos yacimientos situados a 4000 m.sn.m, para determinar las condiciones del medio ambiente y estado de salud de sus 200 trabajadores. Por tal motivo, el presente trabajo señala el proceso de adquisición sobre la enfermedad durante la estadía del trabajador en la mina, y su posterior evolución, pese a las medidas preventivas. Las condiciones ambientales para el desarrollo de la silicosis son el terreno cuarcífero y los lugares de ventilación ventilación deficiente, donde el término medio de partículas de polvo encontradas fue de 0.7 a 1.15, incidiendo particularmente en el operador de lampa. Para ello, se recomendaron medidas preventivas como la adecuada ventilación de los frontones, la omisión inicial de la perforación en seco, el uso de respiradores adecuados para las trabajadores y el empleo de un mejor equipo para la ventilación de los stops. Sin embargo, los resultados obtenidos del proceso, no ofrecieron mejoras sobre el avance de la enfermedad, situándola en un primer estadío con 7.0% en comparación con otras enfermedades. Después de un periodo de 7 años, el departamento de Higiene industrial, nuevamente reevalúa este estudio, encontrando resultados similares con los anteriores, sin reparar en las recomendaciones sostenidas. Así, de los 200 trabajadores examinados, se conoce el estado actual de 103, de los cuales 97 trabajadores tienen silicosis sin determinar aún su estado de su evolución. Luego, en 1956 se diagnosticó que el 27.3% de trabajadores silicosos, evidenciaba un porcentaje considerable en el primer estadio y una dismimución en el estado de sílico-tuberculosis. Por consecuencia, se necesita mejorar no solo las condiciones del ambiente del trabajador, sino eliminar las jornadas laborales de 12 horas de trabajo en subsuelo. Así como la evaluación periódica, integral, radiográfica del estado del trabajador por medio de un personal médico altamente capacitado.

The most famous landmark of the city of Graz (Austria) is the clock tower on the castle hill. An underground chamber was built as a multifunctional structure beneath this landmark. The required structure was designed as cavern. The overburden to the clock tower in the north side of the cavern was only 30 m. To allow access from the city to the chamber and the clock tower, a vertical shaft was built near the cavern. Rock excavation was by drill and blast method. The pilot shaft was made by the raise-boring method. Because the location of the building site was in the center of Graz, special care was taken to minimize deformations and vibrations so as to protect surrounding buildings.

Heat-resisting chromium steels and alloys treated at 825° or 9.50°C (1527° or 1742°F) in a carburizing atmosphere exhibit an extensive carbide precipitation. This carbide precipitation may be succeeded by the FeCr a phase or by a carbide with a higher carbon content. Point analyses carried out with an electron mi-croanalyzer make it possible to study the depletion of chromium in the matrix after precipitation has occurred and to determine the chemical composition of carbides. In particular the content in the carbides of Fe, Ni, and W, elements which substitute Cr, can be accurately determined. HEAT-resisting chromium steels and alloys employed in the construction of gas carburizing and carbonitriding furnaces are subjected to a succession of oxidizing atmospheres during heating and cooling and to carburizing atmosphere during isothermal stage. Such a sequence of thermal cycling causes embrittlement and corrosion in the furnace materials. A quantitative study of the structural changes induced in the furnace materials has not received much attention in the past. However, utilization of the electron probe microanalyzer and other modern techniques has permitted a point analysis of the various phases formed and to follow their relative evolution. This paper gives results as regards the nature and composition of the carbide precipitation and the distribution of chromium in the matrix during only the carburizing periods. The structural changes subsequently produced during oxidizing periods will be presented eventually. METHODS AND MATERIALS Metallographic, X-ray diffraction and Castaing electron-probe microanalysis1 techniques have been employed to study carbide precipitation and evolution and the changes in the composition of the matrix in heat-resisting steels and alloys.

Yunnan mineral is a kind of containing Ta-Nb rare earth deposit, the most potential economic valuable element in it is Sc, and raw mineral has 17.0 g/t Sc. Take the character of Sc into account, the key problem in producing scandium chloride molten salt by adaptive technology is how to man-ufacturer anhydrous scandium chloride molten salt. During the course above, the key problem is that preventing Scandium chloride from being hy-drolyzed into ScOCl. The ScOCl content of molten salt not only affect purifying scandium but al-so do harm to the production of Mg-Al alloy. In order to restrain the creation of ScOCl, add ammo-nium chloride into molten salt. As long as ScOCl is created, it would be chloridized. Thus, during the course of dehydrating anhydrous chloride molten salt this method prevents scandium from hydrolyzing. Accordingly, the key phase of this producing course is eliminate ammonium chloride and the surplus crystal water, and the most crucial of it is restrain scandium chloride from being hydrolyzed into ScOCl. This research analyzed the theory that ammonium chloride is trend to be hydrolyzed into ammo-nium chloride, and propose the research scheme of restraining this process from creating ScOCl. The new process of restraining the generating of ScOCl and dehydration for crystal water rare earth chloride is adopted: Inert gas temperature increases rapidly to a certain degree to eliminate ammonium chloride and crystal water. The experimental research were done such as : the temperature of eliminating ammonium chloride and crystal water, amount of ammonium chloride, time, temperature growth speed, influence of inert gas flow toward to scandium percent hydrolysis, whereby, we conclude the optimal process condition in this period: Temperature: 400°C, proportion of oxidized scandium and ammonium chloride is 1:1.5(Proportion of oxidized scandium and additional salt is 1:5.4), time is 120minute, temperature growth speed is 10?/min inert gas flow is 5L/min.

"Electrical steels are used in motors, power generators, and transformers for electrical applications owing to their superior magnetic properties. These properties are attributed to the presence of a significant amount of silicon in the steel composition. Silicon steels are mainly grouped into two categories: grain-oriented (GO) and non-grain-oriented (NGO). The Si content of silicon steels is generally between about 0.50% and 6.5%. Therefore, silicon steels are further classified as low-, medium-, and high- Si steels. In this paper, liquid steel processing practices for certain silicon steel grades are outlined by considering a steelmaking company that integrates a basic oxygen furnace (BOF), a ladle furnace (LF), and an RHtype degassing unit (RH). Possible problems are identified, suggestions are discussed, and conclusions are drawn on the basis of real plant data. IntroductionSilicon steels are widely used in motors, power generators, and transformers for electrical applications owing to their superior magnetic properties. They are mainly grouped into grain-oriented (GO) and non-grain-oriented (NGO) silicon steel grades. However, the differences in the properties and thermomechanical production of GO and NGO grades are outside the scope of this paper. In this study, liquid steel processing of certain silicon steels will be discussed. In the integrated iron and steelmaking process, converters are the primary steelmaking units that are used mainly for decarburization and removal of phosphorus, and for obtaining liquid steel with a specific chemical composition and suitable temperature for secondary steelmaking operations. Ladle furnaces are a type of ladle metallurgy station consisting of electrical and/or chemical heating facilities for adjusting the liquid steel temperature during alloying. Various types of vacuum units are used for decarburization and removal of nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulphur, depending on the metallurgical conditions of the vacuum units. In this study, an actual steel-production company is considered in which the primary steelmaking operation uses a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter with N2/Ar bottom blowing, and the secondary steelmaking operations involve (1) a ladle furnace (LF) heated by three graphite electrodes and equipped with Ar and N2 top/bottom mixing facilities, and (2) an RHtype (circulation) vacuum degassing unit equipped with a top-blowing attachment for oxygen blowing and an Ar-purging system from an up-leg snorkel."

DISLOCATION damping in single crystals is orientation dependent.&apos; If dislocations are distributed uniformly over all the slip systems in a crystal, and if each dislocation contributes identically to the damping process, then a damping loss or decrement 6 arises. In fact, however, for a crystal of axial direction (hkl), dislocations on certain slip systems are oriented to make a larger contribution to the damping loss than are dislocations on other slip systems. Thus the measuring damping, 6 (hkl) is proportional to an orientation factor (hkl), which weights the ability of each slip system in the crystal to contribute to the total damping. If it is assumed that dislocations are distributed uniformly on all slip systems, then for a given orientation of an fcc crystal this factor is determined2,3 by the three nonzero elastic constants Cll, C12, and C44 and the density p. In this communication measured values of elastic constants for two Fe-18Cr-Ni alloys are reported, and the dislocation damping results on two different orientations of each alloy are analyzed for orientation dependence. Elastic constants were determined by measuring the ultrasonic velocities of one longitudinal and two shear waves in (110) direction of the fcc crystals.4 Variation of velocities with the change in orientation is very small for (110) orientation,3 and so this direction is ideal for orientation factor and comparative damping measurements. Experimental Procedures. The nominal compositions of the alloys studied are given in Table I. These alloys were vacuum-melted and vacuum-cast from high-purity materials at U.S. Steel Applied Research Laboratories. The single crystals were grown by the modified Bridgeman technique. The specimens were homogenized at 1350°C for 20 hr, cut to shape and size with a spark cutter, and then annealed at 1100°C for 20 hr prior to use. In the KHz frequency range, the Marx composite piezoelectric oscillator was used to obtain the damping. The ultrasonic pulse technique was used to measure the ultrasonic velocities and the attenuation in the MHz frequency range. Table I gives the values of the ultrasonic velocities. Values of C11, C12, and C44 calculated from these velocities are also given in Table I, and it is evident that there is very little variation in C11, C12, and C44 with nickel content. This slight variation may be attributed to inaccuracies in velocity measurements and practical differences in the orientations of the specimens. For example, in B the time interval for vl was 2.4 ± 0.05 sec giving an error in v1 of 0.235 x or 0.005 in. per sec. The elastic constants obtained by pulse technique were tested by calculating E<110>, Young&apos;s modulus for the (110) direction, from the equation: This value was compared with the value computed from the resonance bar measurements in which where fr is the resonance frequency and I, is the length of the specimen. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and cuts in the various reining districts of the United States. The mining methods described are those used in the mines of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co., a Mexico corporation whose holding company in the United States is the Greene Cananea Copper Co. The mines are at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, 25 miles directly south of the international boundary, approximately in 31° nor to latitude and 110 to 130° west longitude. Cananea is connected with the boundary towns of Naco and Nogales, Ariz., by a standard-gage railroad.

THIS paper is a companion to the one by George A. Morrison on Mining a Deep Limestone Mine in Ohio.[+] Barberton is 8 miles west of Akron, Ohio, and 23 miles south of Cleveland. The underground mining of limestone at Barberton constitutes the world&apos;s deepest limestone mine. The stratigraphy is as follows: 0-20 ft. Loam, clay, sand and gravel. Water bearing. 20-40 ft. Fractured. sandstone. Water bearing. 40-110 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water bearing. 110-314 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water carrying. 314-2197 ft. Shale with occasional seams of sandstone, which varies in thickness from a few inches to 4 feet. Dry. 2197-2247 ft. Limestone. Dry. 2247-2742 ft. Dolomitic limestone. Dry. 2742-2767 ft. Salt. Dry. 2767- Dolomitic limestone. Dry. All of the strata dip to the southeast, about 0.5 per cent from the horizontal. The top 110 ft. of the crust is water-bearing. The rock strata are naturally fractured to a depth of 314 ft., sufficient to allow the passage of water. In the shaft-sinking operations, a stra was encountered at a depth of 520 ft., and flows of methane gas were pierced at depths of 1350 and 1952 feet. Specifications for the mine plant called for, in part, the sinking of two vertical shafts and a hoisting plant capable of producing at the rate of 300 tons per hour. No. I shaft is 550 ft. west of No. 2 shaft. Each shaft measures 8 by 17 ft. outside of steel. General features of the design (Fig. I) are: Principal set members, 6-in. H-section; connecting angles (studdles), 3/8 by 4 by 4-in. angle irons; spacing of sets, 8 ft. centers; spacing of bearer sets, generally, 160 ft.; bearers, of 12-in. I-beams. Each bearing set featured a concrete ring about the periphery of the shaft, steel to rock, and 8 ft. in height; permanent guides, 6 by 10-in. long-leaf yellow pine, 85 per cent heart. THE SHAFT-SINKING OPERATION The preliminary shaft-sinking work consisted of driving interlocked steel piling about the exterior of the shafts to depths of 35 and 32 ft., respectively, and of such horizontal dimensions as to ultimately permit the pouring of a concrete collar 2 ft. in horizontal thickness. Following the pouring of a shaft collar, a temporary wooden headframe for shaft-sinking purposes was erected. En este sentido, se implementa nuevas técnicas en el el sistema como la lixiviación con curado, la lixiviación en capas delgadas y el retratamiento de los pads, las cuales prolongan la operatividad de sus plantas y mejoran el nivel de ingresos de divisas.

The Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables of the Mexican government entered into an agreement with the United Nations in 1964 for the mineral exploration of a large area in Estado de Sonora, Mexico. The agreement called for a systematic exploration for copper in northern Sonora based on photogeologic mapping, aerial reconnaissance, and geochemical stream sediment sampling. The UN-CRNNR investigations resulted in the detection of anomalous copper values in sediment from the Arroyo Cruz de Cafiada. The anomaly was followed upstream to its source, which ultimately proved to be the La Caridad ore body (see Fig. 1). Soil copper and molybdenum values were found over a large area, and further detailed geologic and geophysical investigations were instituted of the anomalous area. David Coolbaugh was largely responsible for the follow-up work. An induced polarization (IP) survey found a roughly circular region of "highs" that coincided with a high soil copper anomaly. The circular anomalies ringed the topographic feature that ultimately was found to contain the Caridad ore body. Soil geochemical copper response over the ore body was subdued, because the soils were derived from a leached capping, whereas leaching in fringe areas that contained less veining was less intense. The ore body was also ringed by the typical high pyrite zone, and this was the anomaly detected by the IP survey. The UN began drilling in the fall of 1966. Eleven holes tested the IP-Cu geochemical high, but none were of commercial interest. The project was returned to the Consejo and was reviewed in the field by G.P. Salas and V.F. Hollister. It was found that the leached capping had not been tested by the past activities, and the Consejo elected to explore that area in 1967. The capping was evaluated by Salas and Hollister and drilling by the Consejo began in 1967. Commercial grade ore intercepts were found in the first hole. The Consejo drilled nine holes, of which eight were commercial. At least 90.7 Mt (100 million tons) of 0.8% copper were indicated by the Consejo in eight holes.
