"The clearing of tuyeres on copper and nickel converters or similar metallurgical, vessels has, for many years, been done using mainly a manually- operated ""puncher"". One such device is the ""Gaspe Puncher"" developed in 1962 at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter. In an attempt to remove the operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor.The automated puncher is controlled by a Texas Instruments Model 530C Programmable Controller (PLC). Position measurement and control is done using non-contact position measuring equipment from the Tele-Controls Division of Geodimeter Inc. The entire automation system was installed on an existing Gaspe Puncher with minimum disruption to the operation of the smelting process. The operator's panel allows the user to ""block out"" any individual tuyere, and to select any of a variety of operating modes.The development of the automated puncher is described, and the results of several months operation are given.IntroductionThe tuyeres of copper and nickel converters and similar metallurgical vessels become blocked with solidified material formed by the cooling action of the blowing air. This restricts the converting operation. Clearing these blocked tuyeres has for many years been done mainly using a manually-operated ""puncher"" which uses a hydraulic or pneumatically-operated piston to drive a steel bar into the tuyere. The Gaspe Puncher, developed at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter in 1962 is one such device. It is currently being built and sold by Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited, under license to Noranda. There are over 200 units in operation world-wide.In an attempt to remove the Puncher operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, and to increase productivity, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor. Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterised by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25 %-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18 %-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating cost, offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously de-bottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. This paper reviews advances in the technology of abrasion resistant iron and steels, which could help combat abrasion and wear in mining operations. With the recent progress in high chromium alloy iron development, high temperature heat treatment of massive castings can be eliminated, aloy cost reduced, and cracking problems avoided. Data on erosion-corrosion resistance of these irons; trends in the development of improved cast steels; and factors influencing toughness and abrasion resistance of manganese steels are all considered. The 7% Mn. 1% Mo manganese steels are shown to combine toughness and abrasion resistance, and composite castings are a means of combating abrasion in applications involving severe impact. A brief appraisal is given of recently developed martensitic wrought steels with improved weldability.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYComplaints have been made regarding dust respirators that may be used in coal-mining operations. Some of these complaints may be due to improper use of the respirator, inadequate knowledge of its purpose and mode of functioning, poor choice, poor fitting, or inadequate maintenance. It is hoped that this circular will answer these complaints by discussing the various factors relating to the proper use of dust respirators in general and in coal mines in particular.It is pointed out that dust respirators are not to be used as a substitute for dust-control measures. The construction, functioning, choice, fitting, and maintenance of dust respirators are discussed.FIELD OF USEThe function of the dust respirator is to prevent the wearer from inhaling harmful quantities of dust by removing dust from the air he inhales.A dust respirator is not to be used as a permanent substitute for dust-control measures. It is to be used as a temporary substitute until dust-control measures can be instituted or as a protective means where dust-control measures are impracticable, as in applying rock dust in bituminous-coal mines.The following sections of the ""Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines in the United States"" 2/ emphasize the fact that every effort should be made to keep the amount of dust in the air of the working places as small as possible:"

General A review of the literature has revealed important areas which should be investigated during the field work. Of the utmost importance is the safety of mine personnel. Should a phase-to-ground fault occur on a shovel or other piece of equipment, current may return to the substation through the machine's contact surface with the mine floor, thereby raising the frame above ground potential and posing a shock hazard to anyone who touches the equipment. If the frame-to-earth resistance is very low, then no dangerous potentials will be developed, and a basis for elimination of the ground conductors from trailing cables could be postulated. However, should the contact resistance be high, then lethal voltages could be present on the machine frame. In this instance, low-resistance ground conductors in the trailing cable would be a necessity. Therefore, field tests should include measurements of the earth resistance of electrically operated portable or mobile mining equipment such as shovels, draglines, and drills. When the electrical distribution system is subject to lightning discharges, the grounding grid must safely carry to earth and dissipate enormous current surges. It is essential that the grounding grid have a low value of earth resistance, because any potential developed across the grounding grid as a result of current flow will appear on the frames of all machinery connected to the grid. In the spring of 1993, construction began on an ambitious building project in Boston, Massachusetts. The Shriners organization committed to offer state-of-the-art adolescent burn treatment and rehabilitation in its Boston facility by expanding in a most unusual way. In short, the concept included installation of caisson foundations and perimeter slurry wall panels to enable construction of a completely independent structure around and above the existing, continually functioning, hospital. Two distinct phases of work were detailed in the Contract Documents. At the completion of the first phase, patients will be moved into the new building, above, and demolition of the old structure, beneath, will be performed. In Phase I, sections of the slurry wall and caissons, located outside the footprint of the existing building, were planned. The next phase of the work includes the installation of the remaining caissons and slurry wall. Once excavation is completed, the balance of the new hospital structure will be constructed from the bottom upward, connecting to the under side of the new structure.

A meeting of the Board of Directors was held in the Council Room of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Interior Building, Washington, D. C., on Friday, June 21, 1918, at 4 p. m. Twelve members of the Board, the Secretary of the Institute, and nine guests were present. Upon the petition of 28 members of the Institute residing in or near Washington, D. C., a Washington Section was authorized. A committee was appointed to nominate officers and prepare a set of by-laws. The report of the Treasurer was presented in writing, accepted, and ordered filed. Thirty-nine members, 12 associates and 8 junior associates were elected. Two members were reinstated. One resignation was accepted. The dues of 64 members were suspended on account of their being on active war duty.

The subject of the flow of homogeneous fluids—gases alone or gas-free liquids—through porous media may be considered at the present time to be fairly well completed. That is, analytical, graphical, numerical, or experimental methods are now available for obtaining detailed descriptions of the behavior of such homogeneous fluid systems of any reasonable geometry. Thus, satisfactory empirical techniques are now well established for the determination of the permeability of porous media for homogeneous fluids, the numerical magnitude of this permeability uniquely and completely describing a porous medium as a carrier of a homogeneous fluid. Considering this constant as known, the treatment of a wide variety of specific problems involving either the flow of gases or liquids has been carried through to satisfactory conclusions. Beginning with the simple case of strictly radial two-dimensional flow of a liquid or gas into a well under steady-state conditions, generalizations have been developed to apply for systems where the flow is not strictly radial, due either to a lack of uniformity in the reservoir pressures at points distant from the well or deviations from circularity of the external boundary whereby the fluid is being supplied, and finally, to the lack of complete penetration of the well into the producing strata. Satisfactory descriptions are now available for cases where gravity is acting as the driving agent inducing the flow of liquid into the well, either alone or as a supplement to the effect of pressure. The effect of acid treatment on limestone wells has been given a reasonable interpretation on the basis of the fundamental theory of the flow of homogeneous fluids through sands, as have the important features of the problem of water-coning. Then, too, systems in which the outlet of the fluid from the underground reservoir is of a predominantly multiple character may be now considered as in the domain of

The fire started in the development section from methane released into the mine through a roof-bolt hole. The date was 8 May 1998. The flames spread quickly as the coal was ignited. After eight hours the Safety Department decided to seal the vertical ventilation shafts and the slopes. The quality of coal in the Esmeralda Mine is very high quality, and Minerales Monclova (MIMOSA) decided to recover the facilities, however, the Esmeralda Mine coals have a very high gas content of 12 m3/t. Immediately after the mine was sealed, MIMOSA staff implemented a plan to monitor the gas levels underground and contacted specialists for assistance in bringing the mine back on-line. During the next 2.5 months, MIMOSA staff and the specialists observed and analysed the gas behaviour supported by a chromatograph. With the results of the observations and analyses, MIMOSA in consultation with the specialists developed a recovery plan based on flooding the area in which fire might have propagated and in which rekindling was highly probable. Those results were analysed by the command centre (Mexican engineers responsible for mine recovery). At the same time MIMOSA trained rescue teams which included miners who had no previous experience in mine recovery operations. By 20 August 1998, the mine command centre had re-opened the slopes seal. Using a æStep-by-StepÆ system, the rescue team began the recovery process by employing cross-cuts and using an auxiliary fan to establish the ventilation circuit. The MIMOSA team advanced into the mine as far as allowed by the water level and was able to recover the main fan. The official mine recovery date was 30 November 1998.

There are two main challenges in analysis of spectral data: to output as accurate an interpretation of the sample mineral assemblage as possible and to then use the spectral data to map out trends (downhole, across section or traverse) that will assist the exploration geologist to target drilling and further exploration. This paper will discuss methods of extracting the maximum amount of information from spectral data and examples of plotting the information downhole, in section and plan view to assist in exploration and mining. At the request of several Federal agencies, tests were conducted on a relatively recent type of anthracite -burning equipment named the Anthratube. This device, rated at 130,000 B.t .u. per hour, was designed to burn Pea-size anthracite automatically for steam or hot-water house heating and for domes-tic hot -water supply. At the Copper 2016 conference in Kobe, Japan, Outotec introduced a vision for the year 2020, wherein smelting would make use of four digital cornerstones: intelligent instruments, advanced process control, improved information management and transparency of and access to data. Since then, this vision coined the phrase “Fully Automated Smelter” with the mission promising a concept where no manual actions from human operators would be needed during normal smelter operations. Replacing repetitive physical work, collection and analysis of everyday production data has a great potential for further automation and will provide productive ways to improve efficiency and safety of smelters in the future. Therefore, a lot of emphasis has been put into developing solutions to automate these tasks and to move people out of harm’s way. A lot of new equipment, systems and optimization tools are under development. In addition, a lot of effort is going into developing dynamic process models and advanced control systems to interface with the plant automation systems. The goal is to integrate all these concepts to meet Outotec’s Fully Automated Smelter vision. This paper will cover these latest achievements toward this vision and introduce the near-future of digital smelting. INTRODUCTION As is well known already, the humankind is currently experiencing a change, extent of which is broadly studied by the governmental, educational and industrial institutions and parties. The wellbeing and quality of life have traditionally been improved alongside the developments in industrial production, which is now about to enter its fourth revolution. Therefore, the current change is often described as fourth industrial revolution, or industry 4.0 (or industrie 4.0, as named by Acatech, 2013) and can be considered anything from small incremental development to a ground-breaking global reset that will affect everyone’s lives. Many seem to agree, that the scale of change will indeed be big, even significantly bigger than the three industrial revolutions before it (Pellini, Weyrauch, Malho & Carden, 2019; Geissbauer, Vedso & Schrauf, 2016; Jansson, Bjorklund, Lahtinen, Heinonen, Jafs & Fagerlund, 2016).

Aluminum extrusions are widely used for automotive crash management systems due to their superior specific energy absorption capabilities, as compared to steel. The Al-Mg-Si alloy series can be readily extruded into complex multi-hollow profiles, as required in crash systems, and can be used to target a range of desired strength levels. This paper focuses on the development of an axial crush test protocol and evaluation of the crush performance of common 6XXX series alloys for a variety of tempers. The observed crush behaviour is then compared to tensile test results.

The topography of the Jamestown fluorspar area is rough and ranges from 6,400 to 8,000 feet in altitude. Some fluorspar was mined as early as 1870, but mining really did not begin in earnest until 1940, and up to July 1947 it is estimated that 272,500 tons of fluorite was mined and milled. In 1947 the General Chemical Co. was mining fluorite and milling it in a 200-ton-a-day mill at Valmont, 7 miles east of Boulder, and the Ozark-Mahoning Co. was milling ore in a 100-ton-a-day mill at Jamestown, using ore mined, by H. M. Williamson & Son. These fluorite deposits comprise veins in a granite country rock. The Bureau of Mines drilled eight holes, aggregating 2,579.1 feet, on the Blue Jay vein; four holes, aggregating 1,434 feet, on the Chancellor; and one 350-foot hole on the Nations Treasure. Fluorite of a minable grade and width was found in 10 of the holes drilled. In this report the location and accessibility, physical, features and climate are described and a brief history of the district is given. The deposits and character of the ore and sampling and analyses are described, mine workings are outlined, and work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized. Diamond drill logs are shown in appendix I, and 'Sample analyses are tabulated in appendix II.

A series of single-fired (simultaneously detonated) explosions were conducted in an Arizona copper mine. The explosions spanned yields from 1700 to 13600 lbs (773 to 6169 kg) and were all detonated in an approximate 100 m by 100 m area. In order to quantify the effect of the mine free-face, the individual explosions were also detonated under three different emplacement conditions including at the free-face of the mine under normal burden, twice normal burden and fully contained. The purposes of these experiments were to investigate: (1) Generation of in-mine and regional phases such as Pg, Pn, and Lg from mining explosions; (2) Quantification of the relationship between yield and seismic amplitudes; (3) Quantification of the effect of confinement; and (4) Similarities and differences between single-fired waveforms and those from delay-fired explosions. Instrumentation was deployed at near-source (100-700 m) and in mine (1-5km) distances. Empirical scaling relations for the different shots in this test series were developed in order to quantify the effects of yield and confinement.

The Martha Hill project operates with a nett surplus of water, due to the catchment of rainwater on the tailings dam and the requirement to de-water the open pit mine. It is necessary to discharge this surplus, treated as required, to the Ohinemuri River which flows past the process plant.   The treatment plant, adjacent to the process plant, handles all effluent from the Martha Hill operation including water pumped from the mine, excess water from the tailings decant, and seepage from the tailings dam underdrains. To-date the plant has treated and discharged over 800 000 tonnes of water.

Observations were made of the distribution of mercaptan containing S35 between aqueous solution and mineral and between aqueous solution and the gaseous phase. Although equilibrium may not have been attained, adsorption of the reagent was shown to occur reasily from air or aqueous solution on sphalerite, zincite, and willem-ite and to correspond to flotation. Adsorption on quartz did not similarly occur. THE following results, presented here in condensed form,' were obtained in a preliminary study of the adsorption of n-hexane thiol, hexyl mercaptan, on sphalerite, zincite, willemite, and quartz, from aqueous solution and from a gas. Interest in this subject was aroused by a Belgian report' of effective use of hexyl mercaptan for flotation collection of oxidized zinc minerals. The relatively low boiling point, 149°C, of the mercaptan3 suggested the desirability of extending the usual measurements of partition of collector between aqueous solution and gas and between gas and mineral. It is believed that this paper presents the first measurements of this type on a flotation system. Attempts were made to carry out the measurements at equilibrium, but as the work progressed it became increasingly doubtful that this desirable condition had been achieved. To control composition and extent of the gas phase, the apparatus was a wholly-enclosed thermally-controlled glass system. Because of these constraints and the desirability of dealing with pure minerals, a scale of operations was chosen in which a few grams of deslimed mineral were used in each test. It was also necessary to choose a particularly sensitive method for mercaptan analysis, and in fact a method that would permit the experimenters to follow the approach to equilibrium. For these reasons mercaptan marked by radiosulphur 35 was used. An analysis was made for the radiosulphur by a modification of the method of Gaudin and Carr. Coarsely-crystallized sphalerite was handpicked, stage-crushed in the dry state, wet-screened on a 200-mesh sieve, and deslimed in water at about 5 microns. Further treatment consisted of a wash in dilute aqueous hydrogen peroxide, drying, removal of the dark-colored fraction in a Frantz magnetic separator, washing in very dilute hydrochloric acid, repeated washing in distilled and conductivity water, and drying. The last washings showed a conductivity equivalent to a few ppm NaC1, that is, much more than would be provided, theoretically, by a saturated ZnS solution. The material was stored dry in sealed bottles. Analyses were as follows: Zn, 62.3 pct; Fe, 0.43 pct; Cd, 0.44 pct; S, 31.2 pct; Mn, 0.001 pct. The specific surface (BET method) was 2000 cm2/g. Zincite from Franklin furnace of the New Jersey Zinc Co. was hand-picked, dry-crushed, wet-screened at 100 mesh, and deslimed at about 10 microns. After drying, the associated zinc, manganese, calcium, and silicate minerals were removed in a Frantz magnetic separator. The purified zincite was washed in distilled water and conductivity water to a conductance of less than 2 ppm equivalent NaC1, dried, and stored. Analyses were as follows: Zn, 75.1 pct; Fe, 0.9 pct; Mn, 2.78 pct. The specific surface (BET method) was 1740 cm 2/g. Willemite, also from Franklin furnace, was purified similarly. Analyses were as follows: Zn, 52.5 pct; Fe, 0.12 pct; SiO², 27.3 pct; loss on ignition, 0.13 pct. The specific surface was 1760 cm 2/g. Conductivity water (double-distilled) and demin-eralized-distilled water were used in most of the tests. The specific resistance was not less than 600, 000 ohms, and usually above 1,000,000. Radiosulphur-marked hexyl mercaptan (1-hexane thiol) was synthesized by Tracerlab, Inc., Boston. Two lots were secured several months apart. The last lot, consisting of about 0.5 g of the mercaptan, had a total activity of about 10 millicuries. Tracerlab Co. guaranteed only the activity; hence a quasi -vapor pressure determination (based upon an S analysis) of the mercaptan was made. The calculated value, 4.2 mm of mercury at 25.5' C, has been compared with that of a sample of Highest Purity 1-hexane thiol from Fisher Scientific Co. The latter had a vapor pressure of 4.5 mm of mercury at 2.5 C. Analytical Procedures The sample containing radiosulphur-marked mercaptan was oxidized to convert the mercaptan sulphur to sulphate, carrier barium sulphate being added to provide a suitable quantity of total barium sulphate in a filter cake. The precipitate was filtered and dried, and counting was carried out either in a streaming-gas (Q-gas) counter for high sensitivity or with an end-window G-M counter for convenience. The oxidized and precipitated mercaptan gave a radioactive count of 65 counts per minute per microgram in the end-window Geiger-Mueller counter and 1100 counts per minute per microgram in a Q-gas counter. For standardization of the mercaptan solution, 15 replicate analyses were made. The average deviation per measurement was about 1600 cpm in 65,000 cpm, the probable error in the mean being 275 cpm. Thickening of mine tailings is a relatively new concept for their sustainable management. Removal of water from the tailings to form a paste instead of slurry disposal decreases environmental and geotechnical concerns. As the use of these pastes is relatively new, their behaviour requires investigations such as liquefaction and seismic stability, freeze-thaw behaviour, consolidation and leachate characterization. Slurry density, ore type, particle size distribution, specific gravity and environmental conditions can all influence paste characteristics. In this paper, the effect of the above-mentioned parameters is examined. New developments in water removal, and additives (such as flocculating agents, cements, organics, fertilizers, etc) leading to low moisture content tailings are reviewed, and the potential for thickening to enable sustainable management of mine tailings is discussed with respect to storage volume requirement, use of virgin land, consolidation of the tailings, land use after decommissioning.
