Physiol. 11): L365–L374, 1994.—Although integrity of the alveolar basement membrane may influence progression of lung injury induced by inhaled particulates, little is known about direct effects of coal dusts on the alveolar epithelium or its extracellu¬lar matrix (ECM). Effects of dust on synthesis of cell and ECM proteins by type II cells (T2P) was thus investigated. Three coal dusts (anthracite no. 867; bituminous no. 1451 and no. 1361) and mine dust MIT-3, of respirable size, were studied as a function of dose and time over 3 days of primary T2P culture. On day 1, 750 µg/ml of 867 were required to increase relative synthesis of ECM proteins (ECM/cell). MIT-3, 1451, and 1361 were without effect. By day 3, 867 or MIT-3 increased ECM/ cell 60-100% at 300 µg/ml; 1451 produced modest, dose-dependent stimulation, whereas 1361 remained without effect. None of the dusts caused significant cytotoxicity. The results show dose- and time-dependent effects of well-characterized coal and mine dusts to modify partitioning of newly synthesized proteins into the ECM and suggest that coal dust exposure may modulate structure or function of the subepithelial basement membrane.basement membrane; cell culture; inorganic dust; lung injury; extracellular matrix deposition; pulmonary epitheliumCHRONIC EXPOSURE to coal dust may be associated with development of pulmonary fibrosis and consequent loss of normal lung function (see Ref. 26 for review). Al¬though the pathways of inorganic dust-induced lung injury are recognized to involve an inflammatory re¬sponse, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms are not understood in detail. Acute and chronic responses to dust exposure involve a variety of interacting cells of the immune system, including macrophages, T cells, and B cells, along with pulmonary fibroblasts. These responses reflect direct effects of the dust particles, as well as indirect effects mediated by soluble factors, including cytokines and eicosanoids (see Ref. 41 for review).Studies of pulmonary macrophages and fibroblasts following silica exposure suggest that dust-induced damage at the airway surface may involve cellular injury through oxidant-mediated pathways. Coal dusts and related inorganic particulates can activate the alveolar macrophage (42) to produce fibronectin (15) and cytokines, such as interleukin-1 or tumor necrosis factor (4) and/or other soluble products which act locally (29) to cause acute cellular injury and to initiate the progression of fibrotic lung damage (16). Type I epithelial cells are typically more susceptible than type II cells to oxidant injury. Type I cell damage and subsequent death leads to denudation of the subepithelial basement membrane (2, 21) and can be associated with leakage of plasma constituents from the pulmonary vasculature into the alveolar compartment (13)."

Pilot-Plant Testing of Ammoniacal-Cyanidation for Gold Recovery from Copper Gold-Bearing Ore The results of pilot-plant tested ammoniacal-cyanidation of gold recovery from copper gold-bearing ore are presented in this paper. This ore is from a deposit of Russian Federation with gold and copper grade 9.5 g/t and 0.4 per cent, respectively. Copper is largely present as malachite and azurite. The presence of chalcopyrite and bornite is also observed. In order to recover gold, gravity is recommended. Two options of ammoniacal-cyanidation using leaching of gravity tails, CIP and filtration, were tested. It was found that ammoniacal-cyanidation using filtration of leaching tailings and recycled solutions is the most optimal option. The proposed flow sheet provides for 89.7 per cent gold recovery from gravity tailings at the consumption of NaCN 0.9 kg/t and (NH4)2CO3 7.5 - 9 kg/t. Compared to conventional cyanidation, this technology decreases the consumption of sodium cyanide from 4 up to 0.9 kg/t at the same gold recovery. It can be recommended for the treatment of copper gold-bearing ores with the similar composition.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) excavation is nowadays more and more considered a valuable alternative to conventional tunnelling. As a matter of fact, thanks to its advantages such as greater rate of advance and safer working conditions, the application of TBMs has increased significantly in recent years. Despite the possible excellent performance of TBMs in favourable ground conditions, the advance rates could be significantly slowed down or even obstructed in limiting geological situations. This obviously traduces in potentially longer tunnel construction times and higher costs and, therefore, in a preference for conventional method. One of the major geological hazards encountered during tunnel construction, is related to the presence of fault zones or heavily jointed and fractured rocks. The most common geotechnical problems resulting from tunnelling in these difficult conditions include the instability of the excavation face, instabilities of side-walls producing large overbreaks on the tunnel profile, excessive deformations in case of squeezing grounds, frequently changing stresses in terms of magnitude and direction, high water inflows, etc. The decisions aids for tunnelling (DAT) is a model and a computer code that can be used to evaluate the influence of the uncertainties related to both the geological/geotechnical conditions and the construction process on final tunnel construction time and costs. In this framework, the DAT is used for assessing the effects that challenging ground conditions may have on tunnelling operations in terms of costs and delays. This is done by simulating the tunnel construction considering several geological profiles. The aim of the study is comparing different excavation methods (ie drill and blast versus TBM) in changing ground conditions along the tunnel alignment ranging from good rock, to very poor and fractured formations. The effect of a near-saturation unidirectional magnetic field was to decrease slightly the endurance life in Armco iron in the annealed condition. This is expected since the energy-absorbing mechanism associated with domain wall movemenfs is inhibited bv the strong field. THE factors determining failure under dynamic loading are not yet clearly recognized. One of the properties of a metal which might be thought to influence fatigue life is its damping capacity. Foppl1 conducted an alternating torsion test at a frequency of 700 cpm continuously for a period of 3 years, without the test piece breaking or showing any sign of deterioration after 1100 Million cycles of stress; the rate of dissipation of energy was sufficient to maintain the test piece at about 100°C above the ambient temperature. cazaud2 concludes from this, and others follow him, that ('the capacity for dissipation in the form of heat by internal damping is unlimited" and that therefore "damping is not directly related with fracture by fatigue." The efforts to mitigate longwall subsidence influences on various residential and farming structures by many coal mining companies have been successful in the recent years (Luo, et al, 2003). The successes were largely dependent on the accurate subsidence predictions, correct assessments of potential influences, appropriate design and implementation of the mitigation measures. However, such efforts for protecting large industrial structures are still very rare. In this paper, the successful assessment and mitigation of the subsidence influences associated with a very intensive dynamic longwall subsidence process on a large workshop are presented.

All shock-tube based initiation systems have a time lag relating to the propagation velocity of the shock-tube itself. This paper examines the exploitation of this inherent time lag to achieve delay blasting with accuracies approaching that achievable with electronic systems albeit over a much shorter delay range. The system employed consists of a combination of standard shock-tube, plain detonators and various shock-tube branching components. The accuracy of the complete system depends on the scatter in delay time induced by each component. In order to quantify this scatter a series of trials were undertaken to determine the variability for each component. These trials are described along with a detail statistical summary of the data recorded.

The indirect method of drying coal fines is applied to filter cakes which ordinarily contain 22 to 30% moisture and are not readily transportable. The "Thermal Dryer", which operates on the mass transfer principle, has found wide use in coal preparation plants. The thermal dryer is penalized in operation by the necessity of adding coarse coal to the wet fines before entering the dryer body in order to produce a permeable bed, and thus enable hot gases to uniformly contact the wet mass. The ratio of coarse coal to fines varies from 2:1 to as much as 4:1, depending on the average particle size, moisture, and ash content of the fines.

All gravity methods for the separation of ore from gangue, or of slate and other refuse from coal, are based upon differences in the falling velocities, in some fluid medium such as air or water, of the materials to be separated. As all materials falling in a vacuum have the same velocity, independent of the size, shape, weight or specific gravity of their individual particles, it would be more accurate to describe the operation of these methods as depending upon the retardation of falling velocities effected by the resistance of a fluid medium, this retardation being greater for small or light particles than for large or heavy particles. This generalization is true also of those appliances utilizing centrifugal force to replace or to supplement the action of gravity. The separation of materials of different specific gravities by means of a fluid having a specific gravity greater than that of the lighter particles and less than that of the heavier particles has not been applied commercially, or on a large scale, to the separation of ores or to the washing of coal, the method being limited to laboratory experimental work or to laboratory determinations for the purpose of checking up the work of jigs, classifiers, and other types of concentrating appliances. A solution of zinc chloride has thus come into general use in the laboratory to separate coal, bony coal, and slate, both to check up the work of coal-washing plants and for the purpose of making tests preliminary to the designing of coal-washing plants. The use of a heavy solution of some chemical in water has often been proposed for making such separations, especially in connection with the washing or preparation of coal. Practically insuperable difficulties, however, have prevented the commercial development of any such process, the difficulties being both physical and financial. The cost of the chemical used to make high-gravity solutions is usually prohibitive, and the freeing of the coal from all traces of the chemical is found to be practically impossible. Such solutions inevitably penetrate the individual lumps and particles of coal, transfusing into the pores and saturating the joint-planes, and very large quantities of wash water

"Compliance standards for respirable dust, which are reduced because of high quart: concentrations, have become an industry-wide problem. Research on the physical and chemical character of quart-classified particles in respirable coal mine dusts indicates that they may exist in intermixed layers or may be coated by clay or coal material. The relative amount of intermixing varies with the coal seam being mined. If most of the quart: particles of a mine dust are ""pure,"" then the dust may have a high fibrogenic risk potential because of truly free silica and the compliance standard should be lowered. lf, however, quart: is locked inside another material matrix, or coated, a reduced compliance standard may not be appropriate.Although much research has been done on coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) over the past decades, the etiologic agents of the disease still have not been pinpointed. The predominant methods of characterizing respirable coal mine dusts were bulk analysis techniques for determination of elemental and mineralogical concentrations, the results of which were used in statistical analyses to determine relationships between dust composition and the occurrence of CWP. These methods are incapable of finding the etiologic agents in the dust primarily because of complicated and confounding physiochemical factors, which may be discovered if the focus of characterization was done on a dust particle level.The SEM/EDXA-based research discussed here shows a significant difference in the number of ""pure"" quartz particles in respirable dusts collected from different mines. Some of the results have been reported previously (Grayson, Andre, and Simonyi, 1988). Concurrent research by other investigators (Wallace et al., 1989) demonstrates an SEM/EDXA-based methodology to pinpoint the location of the ""contaminating"" substance(s ) in a quartz-classified particle. The research of the European Economic Community has also begun analyses on the respirable-dust-particle level (Robock and Bauer, 1988).Since the compensatory and intangible costs of CWP are substantial in the United States, it is important that the etiologic agents be determined and then either controlled or neutralized in a cost-effective way. This line of research is especially important consid-ering the forecasted. near-term growth of coal production and the evolution of high productivity longwall panels (an immediate problem in compliance) and continuous mining sections ( a probable future problem).This need has been accentuated now that nearly all respirable dust samples submitted to MSHA are analyzed for free silica (Tomb, Parobeck, and Gem, 1986). Today a real problem exists in the coal industry, both underground and surface, because of high quartz levels in respirable dusts causing substantially reduced compliance standards (Murphy, 1989).The combined results of the respirable dust particle investigators indicate that conventional bulk sample analyses may not faithfully represent the amount of biologically available or active quartz in all mines with a high level (greater than 5% ) of quartz in the dust For example, some mine dusts might contain predominantly occluded (or coated) quartz particles where bulk analysis would result in anomalously high ""free silica"" measurements. The same result would occur when quartz particles are intermixed substantially with other minerals that can alter the surface of the composite particle away from a quartz-behaving character."

Mining Schools have a potentially central role to play in developing Learning systems for access by industry. Reference is made to initiatives to develop a system that is based on collaboration between UBC, Edumine and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. Recent experiences with this model are reviewed.

To save time for construction of coal pits, the contractor decided to combine erection of the tower pitheads with digging of skip shafts to the depth necessary for placing proper coal pit equipment. It was obvious that blasts used in shaft faces and lifting machines installed at a lower part of the pithead could excite vibrations of an upper part of the pithead with curing concrete. The contractor was concerned about vibrations of pithead concrete structures and the disturbance of freshly poured concrete in forms at a top of the pithead as a consequence of structure vibrations. The results of a study of the tower pithead structure vibrations from blasting and operating machinery, and effects of structural vibrations on curing concrete are presented. Structural vibrations were measured at the tower pitheads of two coal pits from twelve blasts. Records of horizontal and vertical displacements were superposition of harmonic low-frequency damped vibrations and sporadic high-frequency damped vibrations with a variable frequency. Low frequency vibrations attenuated during 8-13 s after the last delayed blast. Measured values of the natural frequencies of pithead horizontal vibrations coincided with the calculated frequencies of horizontal bend vibrations. An increase of a face depth from 18 to 50 m diminished 16 times horizontal bending vibration displacements of concrete structures. Measurements of vertical structural vibrations from blasting demonstrated increasing of vertical pithead displacements with the rising of structure elevations. This is evidence of the pithead longitudinal tension. The holes with charges were not properly condensed for one blast. As a result of incompact stemming, the blast substantially increased the energy of airborne pressure waves, which triggered natural vertical vibrations of the pithead with high displacements.

THE Portland Cement Association was organized more than a third of a century ago by a group of cement manufacturers, to do cooperatively the educational and research work needed to ensure proper use of their product. Specifically, the Association has a threefold purpose: (1) to search out facts to ensure the best possible service from concrete; (2) to give the widest possible circulation to facts affecting the use of concrete; (3) to urge practical application of those facts on actual building projects. An organization of technically trained men conducts many research projects in the Association laboratories, interprets their findings and applies them practically in the field. The net effect of this work has been to improve the design and prolong the life of roads, bridges, industrial, commercial and public buildings, homes, farm structures and concrete products. The results of this technical research and experimentation are made available to the entire construction industry through bulletins and reports. Information is also released to the general public through newspapers, magazines and Association publications. In addition to a1 technical staff in the general office in Chicago, the Association has district offices in 22 cities. Field engineers cover 37 states, the District of Colum-bia and British Columbia, to give service to users of Portland cement.

In the summer of 1937 the authors began a series of time studies of the various processes employed in' the production of crushed stone. These studies, made at quarries situated in the eastern and southeastern parts of the United States, have not been completed, but to make results available to the industry as early as possible, it was decided to publish summaries of the studies made to January 1, 1939, as a series of progress reports. The first of these dealt with power-shovel loading and was issued as Report of Investigations 3461 in September 1939. The second, issued in September 1939 as Report of Investigations 3467, dealt with quarry haulage. The present report discusses analyses of time studies of primary drilling at the same group of quarries. OBJECT Or STUDY Pressure of business problems frequently requires the entire attention of quarry management, and in consequence internal plant economies often are neglected. Also, operating officials absorbed in their local problems are prone to overlook possible economies that would attract attention immediately were they critically examining another plant. The authors felt that technical studies at a number of plants, made by impartial engineers, might disclose opportunities to reduce costs or improve efficiency in internal plant processes.

This paper is the first preliminary report on the bauxites and terra rossas of the Caribbean. It concentrates on the islands of the Greater Antilles, and for reference purposes the Yucatan Penin- sula is included. At this point, observations made in Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic are compared with reported information on Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Yucatan Peninsula with regard to occurrence, as well as physical, chemical, and mineralogical composition. From this, an attempt is made at classifying the types of bauxites in the Caribbean, indicating the best reserves estimates, and the process ability of these bauxites. Some suggestions are also provided to fuel the controversy over the likely source material(s) or origin of the Caribbean bauxites.

Anisotropy is a characteristic of intact foliated metamorphic rocks (slates, gneisses, phyllites, schists). Testing was used to establish the anisotropic behaviour of selected gneissic rocks. The effect of anisotropy on various mechanical properties (strength, deformation) and dynamic properties (wave velocity) was examined. The rock samples were also tested at successively higher confining pressures in order to evaluate the effect of anisotropic behaviour at high overburden pressures.

The reduction of iron dissolution and acid consumption is fairly important in the extraction of Ni and Co from laterite ores from both economic and efficiency perspectives. BGRIMM conducted detailed research to investigate the behavior of iron in a nickel laterite leaching process. The mineralogy of Ni and Co was studied. In limonite ore about 76% of nickel is present in goethite while in saprolite ore 79% of nickel is associated with magnesium and silicon minerals. Test work revealed that limonite can be decomposed completely with enough acid concentration during atmospheric leaching. More than 98% of Ni and Co were leached into solution while 85% of the iron was also dissolved with 130-140 g/L iron in solution. Iron precipitates as hematite in the temperature range 250-270?C without neutralization reagents. That’s why limonite is treated by high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) technology to achieve nickel extraction and iron precipitation in the same autoclave. BGRIMM’s test results indicated that the remaining acid in atmospheric leaching solution and acid released by iron precipitation at a lower temperature was enough to leach saprolite efficiently. The so-called inverse leaching technology leaches limonite at atmospheric condition and the leaching slurry combined with saprolite is pumped into an autoclave to leach saprolite at 150-170?C. In the autoclave iron precipitates as hematite without acid consumption. Total nickel and cobalt extractions in the test program were more than 90% with iron content in solution below 8 g/L. In this inverse process iron dissolves in the atmospheric leaching stage and precipitates as hematite in the low temperature leaching stage. Compared with HPAL the leaching temperature is reduced to 150-170 ºC from 250-270 ºC. Compared to atmospheric tank leaching acid consumption is reduced from 850-950 kg/t ore (atmospheric) to 550-650 kg/t ore (inverse).

Accurate level detection is required to make full use of level in optimizing control strategies for flotation columns. Techniques based on pressure and electrical conductivity are compared. Pressure and conductivity profiles give good agreement on level. Level calculated from single and multiple pressure values became more accurate using, in order, one, two and three sensor locations. The level estimate remained in error, however, because, unlike the collection zone, froth zone bulk density varies with height. A conductivity probe continually updating the conductance profile is a practical method of obtaining an accurate level.

The optimum situation in sealing the soil with latex would be to locate the sealant at the depth where natural permeability is lowest, and to narrow distribution of the latex to a film. To ascertain how closely we were achieving these objectives it was necessary to devise a method to measure the concentration of latex in soil. A number of methods were explored and two were used in actual field tests. SBR latex tagged with c14 was prepared and used to determine the distribution of polymer in the soil. The latex was made by copolymerizing a mixture of radioactive and normal styrene with butadiene in bottles by conventional methods. Average particle size was 600 Å. Diluted aliquots had 1.40 microcuries radioactivity per gram of latex. Tagged latex was mixed with soil in a range of proportions from 0.01 to 0.25% by weight to develop a calibration curve. Analyses of soil in the laboratory and from the field were determined by comparison with this master curve. Styrene-containing polymers have a characteristic peak at 700 cm-1 but crosslinked SBR is not soluble in solvents normally used in infra-red spectroscopy, e.g., carbon disulfide. We developed a method for solubilizing the crosslinked polymer by stirring overnight at room temperature a soil sample in chloroform with t-butyl hydroperoxide and osmium tetroxide. The filtered chloroform residue was dried to constant weight, thoroughly mixed and pressed into a KBr pellet, and concentration was determined by measuring the absorption at 700 cm-1. In deposits in which the secondary zones are well defined a layer of rich oxidized ore is frequently found immediately to overlie the enriched sulphides, from which it is derived by direct oxidation in place. In deposits that contain oxidizing precipitants particles and masses of residual oxidized ore are likely to be scattered through the leached zone, having been precipitated during migration before reaching the zone of enrichment. This precipitation hinders secondary enrichment and in extreme cases prevents the formation of such concentrations. Residual ores are precipitated by various reagents. Carbonates are formed through the action of the carbonic acid contained in surface waters, and also directly through the replacement of calcite, especially where the containing rock is limestone. Native metals, such as copper, gold, and silver, are formed by the action of reducing agents, among which organic matter and ferrous sulphate are prominent. Kaolin, gouge, and certain shales occasionally act as powerful precipitants through adsorption. Silver is often found as residual chloride, formed through precipitation by the chlorine contained in surface waters. Residual ores are often the result of incomplete solution, the relatively insoluble minerals being left behind during the migration of associated metals; incomplete oxidation and solution often leave residual masses of unaltered, or partly altered, sulphides in the oxidized zone. Such residual particles or masses have commonly been enriched by additions from circulating, metal-bearing solutions.
