Certain blasting applications are more prone to the generation of significant levels of nitrogen dioxide post blast fumes, more commonly referred to as after blast smoke, generally ranging in color from dark yellow to bright red. This paper reviews basic background chemistry defining the observed fumes and attempts to correlate geology, blast design, and explosive composition effects on the level of nitrogen dioxide that can be observed in various blasting conditions. Additionally, a test setting for evaluating the generation of post blast fumes is presented with pertinent test data detailing generic explosive formulation modifications which effect the overall level of post detonation generation of nitrogen dioxide.

Opencast blasting is notoriously subject to variable blasting conditions, some of which are related to changes in ground conditions and some to human and equipment factors. As drilling and blasting constitute a high proportion of working costs, control in this area is crucial for good management. During a recent exercise, wireline logging of blastholes was shown to have the potential to provide invaluable data for optimising blasting control and design. The paper reports on the exercise undertaken, showing that serious misconceptions as to the borehole diameters, explosive densities and posi- tions of decking were quickly corrected using the method. Potential use in blast design is discussed, as are the cost implications.

Hydrothermal systems form on land where and when an impermeable cap-rock unit ( either natural or self-sealed) , a permeable aquifer. and permeable discharge and recharge channels (cross-stratal permeability) develop in an anomalously hot part of the crust. A consideration of the relationship between magmatic and tectonic events in volcanically active areas indicates these conditions arise during: (1) the resurgent doming stage of the resurgent caldera cycle; (2) following movement on the bounding faults of tilted fault blocks ; and (3) as a result of hydrothermal boring associated with the intrusion of major sills. On the assumption that the submarine hydrothermal systems which deposit volcanogenic massive sulphide ores are comparable to subaerial hydrothermal systems, it is suggested that: (1) the horizon of mineralization corresponds to the time period when conditions favour the development of hydrothermal systems, as outlined above; (2) exploration for Cu-rich Cu-Zn-Pb or Cu-Zn ores should be directed to paletopographically high areas near discharge conduits , whereas exploration for Cu-poor ZnPb ores should concentrate on paleotopographically low areas down slope from conduits; (3) deposits with stringer zones lying above normally permeable units may be underlain by regionally extensive weakly mineralized and altered zones (self-seal caps) ; (4.) in the absence of a self -sealed cap, the ore horizon may be underlain by a naturally impermeable unit (e .g. a fine clastic sediment) ; (5) the condition of cross-stratal permeability may be evidenced by features such as dykes. alignment of vari ous magmatic and hydrothermal phenomena, abrupt thickness changes in stratiform units indicative of ponding against syn-volcanic faults, and fault-scarp slump deposits; (6) the condition of high heat flow may be evidenced by near-surface magmatism and steep thermal gradients preserved in metamorphic mineral assemblages.

DECEMBER, 1971 The Wanders Club, Johannesburg Sunday, 9th April, to Friday, 14th April, 1972 The Tenth Symposium which is the first ever held outside the North American continent is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation), in collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. "IntroductionAir sampling for airborne contaminants requires a system for moving air, a collection method, and a procedure to determine the quantity of contaminant collected. Because occupational exposure limits and air quality standards frequently are expressed in terms of concentrations, a method of determining the volume of air sampled is also needed. The four principal components in a sampling train are shown in Figure 12-1. The inlet admits the air sample into the train; the collector(s) separates the gas, vapor, or particles from the air; the flowmeter measures the rate or total quantity of air sampled; and the pump (air mover) provides the suction required to draw an air sample through the train. Inlet sampling considerations are discussed in Chapter 21. Various types of collectors are described in subsequent chapters. Flowmeters are discussed in Chapter 7.This chapter will describe the air mover portion of the sampling train and air sampling systems that contain three or four components in a convenient package. The chapter consists of two parts. The first part contains a brief description of the different types of air movers and air sampling systems. The second part consists of tables and figures showing detailed information on a wide variety of commercially available air movers and sampling systems. ient size is filled with a liquid in which the suspected contaminant is insoluble. When the liquid is allowed to escape from the vessel, it is replaced by air from the atmosphere to be sampled. Such an air sample is an integrated sample rather than an instantaneous sample because the mass of fluid requires a finite time to empty. In fact, by employing a large vessel with controlled drainage, this method can be used to move air at low flow rates through a sample collector for extended intervals. THE complicated nature of the property changes that accompany age-hardening has made it necessary to reconsider and to elaborate the simple dispersion theory.1 It has been apparent for some time that more direct information is needed concerning the atomic mechanism of precipitation from solid solution if the theory of age-hardening is to be developed past a purely qualitative stage.‡ Fortunately, in recent years information has been developed which allows us to trace in detail the lattice changes accompanying the process of precipitation from solid solution. This information relates chiefly to the sequence of the several stages of lattice alteration by which the matrix lattice is transformed to the equilibrium precipitate lattice, and permits reasonable inferences to be drawn concerning the states of internal strain that accompany these stages. This information is most complete for the solid solution of copper in aluminum. The equilibrium precipitate is the ?' phase," CuA12." This forms in plates, parallel to the {100} matrix planes. The atom pattern and atom spacing on the plane in ?' lying parallel to this plane are roughly similar to those opposite it in the matrix.' The formation of ?', however, is preceded by the formation of a transition lattice ?', which again lies parallel to the matrix {100} plane, but in this case the matching of atom pattern and spacing across the matrix-precipitate interface is nearly perfect; thus there is lattice coherency across the interface and the interface is a plane of separation in only a very limited sense.4-8 Particles of ?' may be recognized microscopically and form a well-defined Widmanstätten figure.* The ?' lattice is recognized by the occurrence of diffraction lines on powder photograms or of spots on Laue photograms which may be analyzed in the usual ways to determine the lattice type and the lattice spacings. Very recent research 6.7,1 has shown, however, that streaks occur on the Laue photogram at an earlier point in time during the aging process. These streaks have been attributed to a preferential clustering of copper atoms into small platelike elements of only a few atoms in thickness and a few hundred atoms in diameter, probably of the composition of "CuA12," which may be designated as Guinier-Preston zones or aggregates.1 It is difficult if not impossible to determine the lattice type and lattice spacing in these aggregates. It is possible1 that these aggregates are in fact merely ?' in a high state of dispersion; the inclination to argue this is strong, as we shall see later. Never-

In order to meet the stringent specifications associated with the production of LME Grade A cobalt cathode, producers need to ensure that a number of impurities, including Cd, are removed from the advance electrolyte to ppb levels (~0.1 mg/L). Conventional options include ion exchange using amino methyl phosphonic acid resin and solvent extraction using D2EHPA. More recently a Cd-selective resin, employing Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT), became available from IBC Technologies, Inc. These three potential unit operations were evaluated in parallel at Mintek. MRT was identified as the most technically feasible option. Results obtained on a cobalt advance electrolyte, containing 55 g/L Co, 6 mg/L Cd and 60 g/L Na2SO4, are presented in this paper.

USING a recently developed X-ray method, reported by Schulz,2 it is possible to make a rapid survey of the perfection of a single crystal at a particular surface. This technique has the advantage of allowing a large surface of a specimen to be examined by taking a single photograph and it compares well with other X-ray methods in regard to sensitivity of detection of small angle boundaries. During the course of a survey of the perfection of large crystals of aluminum produced by a number of methods, an examination has been made of a number of single crystals produced from the melt using a soft mold (levigated alumina)." Crystals grown by this method are known, from an X-ray study carried out by Noggle and Koehler,3 to contain regions where they are highly perfect. In the present work, it has been possible to obtain photographs showing directly the distribution of low angle boundaries at a particular surface of these crystals. single crystals were grown from the melt using the modified Bridgman method with a speed of furnace travel of -1 mm per min. These were about 1/10 in. thick, 1 in. wide, and several inches long. The metal was 99.99 pct pure aluminum supplied by the Aluminum co. of America. The crystals were examined by placing them at an angle of about 25° to the X-ray beam issuing from a fine focus X-ray tube of the type described by Ehrenberg and Spear4 and constructed by A. Kelly at the University of Illinois. A photographic film was placed SO as to record the X-ray reflection from the lattice planes most nearly parallel to the crystal surface. The size of the focal spot on the X-ray tube was between 25 and 40 u, and the distance from the X-ray tube focus to the specimen (approximately equal to the specimen to film distance) was -15 cm. White X-radiation was used from a tungsten target with not more than 35 kv in order to reduce the penetration of the X-rays into the specimen. Exposure times were approximately 1 hr with tube currents between 150 and 250 microamp. The type of photograph obtained from these crystals is illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows a number of overlapping reflections from the same crystal. The large uniform central reflection is traversed by sets of horizontal white and dark lines. These two sets run mainly parallel to one another. Lines of one color are wavy in nature and often branch and run together. Large areas of the crystal surface show no evidence of these lines whatsoever. The lines are interpreted as being due to low angle boundaries in the crystal, separating regions which are tilted with respect to one another. A white line is formed when the relative tilt forms a ridge at the interface and a black line is found when a valley is formed. In a number of cases, the lines stop and start within the area of the reflection and often run into the reflection from the edge, corresponding to a low angle boundary starting from the edge of the crystal. The prominent lines run roughly parallel to the direction of growth of the crystal although narrow bands can run in a direction perpendicular to this; see Fig. 2. Although they may change their appearance slightly, the lines tend to occur in the slightly,Same place in the X-ray image and to maintain their rough parallelism when the crystals are reduced in thickness by etching. Thus the low angle boundaries can occur at any depth within the crystal. The appearance of the lines is unaffected by subjecting the crystal to rapid temperature changes, such as plunging into liquid nitrogen or rapid quenching from 620°C. From the width of the lines on the x-ray reflection, values can be found for the angular misorienta-tion of the two parts of the crystal on either side of a boundary. The values found run from 1' to 10' of arc, but values of UP to 20' have sometimes been found, e.g., the widest lines on Fig. 2. These mis-orientations are much less than those commonly found in crystals possessing a lineage structure. When a number of a and white lines occur, running in a roughly parallel direction across the image of a Crystal, the total misorientation corresponding to lines of one color is approximately equal to that corresponding to lines of the other color. The interpretation of the lines as due to low angle boundaries has been checked in a number of ways. Photographs taken with different specimen-to-film distances distinguish lines due to low angle boundaries from effects due to surface relief of the specimen. Normal Laue back-reflection photographs, taken with the beam irradiating an area of the surface showing a number of the lines, show white lines running through each Laue spot. Black lines are set to see by this method. X-ray photographs were also taken, using the set-up described by Lam-one et al.5 when the beam straddles regions giving rise to lines in the Schulz pattern, split reflections are observed within the Bragg spot. The misorienta-tions calculated from the separation of these reflections and that found from the widths of the lines on the schulz technique patterns show good agreement. "In the spring of 1927, six members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers met for dinner at the Chemists' Club in New York to discuss the possibility of setting up a committee within the Institute to further the current interest in the science of steelmaking. Attention to this subject had been crystallized by a symposium held by the Faraday Society in 1925. After a prolonged discussion, ranging from thermodynamics to slag conditioning, it was decided to approach the Institute with the request that a standing committee on "The Physical Chemistry of Steel Making" be set up. This committee proposed to promote scientific and practical papers on the subject, and was designed to cooperate with the Open Hearth Committee of the Institute in bringing scientific developments to the attention of open-hearth operators throughout the country. . . . "As the life of the [Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking] Committee lengthened and general interest in the technical phases of steelmaking grew, it .became evident that there was a distinct need for a book that might serve the open-hearth interests to better advantage than standard texts whose scope is necessarily wide and whose detailed exposition of the open-hearth process is, therefore, somewhat limited. With this thought in mind, the Committee, after some years of consideration and debate, embarked on the venture of writing a manuscript on 'Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking'." The foregoing paragraphs, taken from the introduction by C. H. Herty, Jr. to the first edition, well describe the circum- stances which led to the publication of “Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking” in the spring of 1944. The book consisted of nine- teen chapters contributed by twenty-three authors and edited by the staff of Alloys of Iron Research and T. S. Washburn, H; M. Larsen, and J. S. Marsh with Frank T. Sisco as consulting editor. The Engineering Foundation and the Open Hearth Steel Committee of the Iron and Steel Division, AIME, made financial grants; steel companies and other organizations supported the publication by contributing time and expenses of staff members in their capacity as authors or editors. Today, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design. In this work, a model of a rougher flotation circuit, based on operating variables and parameters fitted from industrial data, obtained in some previous work, is used to develop a set of logic rules in order to aid operating decisions. The simulator was first used to sensitize the effect of changing the froth depth profile on target variables, and then to find out the best profile to reject common disturbances coming into the plant. The flotation circuit simulator was redesigned to incorporate an expert system following the proposed control algorithm. Several tests were performed to evaluate the control responses to different correlated series of input variables, such as feed grade, tonnage, particle size distribution, and solid percentage. This paper discusses two mineralogy characteristics that may affect the flotation of sulfide ore. The first one, process mineralogy study on a Cu-Ni sulfide ore shows that valleriite and tochilinite are incline to form on chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and serpentine surface, and the further guess is that the formation of valleriite and tochilinite may also causes the serpentine transform to talc, so the serpentine surface is a phase of talc or a transition phase from serpentine to talc and this enhances the flotability of the gangue minerals. The second discussion on the flotation behavior of the sulfide minerals from the point of view of the mineral semiconductor character.

THE diffusion of metals plays an important role in many metallurgical processes, 1,2 as, for example, the formation of alloys by the annealing of mixed powders, the homogenization of segregated alloys, and the carburization of steel. Other equally important phenomena, such as recrystallization and creep, are based on the movement of like atoms. Although much is known concerning the effects of diffusion in metals, very little is known concerning the details of the physical processes involved.1,3-5 The data that should give most information concerning the processes involved in diffusion are those on the diffusion of like atoms-self-diffusion. Very little is known concerning the rates of self-diffusion of metals because before the discovery of artificial radio-activity in 1934 there was no means of detecting the movement of the diffusing atoms through the solvent metal except in the elements possessing natural radioactive isotopes-lead, thallium and bismuth. Using the induced radioactivity of the element as an indicator, atoms can now be "tagged" so that the rate of diffusion of the radioactive isotopes of an element (tagged atoms) into the stable isotopes of the same element can be measured. As the radioactive and stable isotopes of an element differ only in nuclear structure, it is quite certain that all isotopes of an element diffuse at the same rate. Two techniques have been used to measure self-diffusion. In one, a thin layer of radioactive metal is deposited on the face of the solvent metal, and the decrease in the surface activity as the radioactive atoms diffuse into the solvent metal is measured. This method has been used to determine the coefficients of self-diffusion of lead6-10 and bismuth10 using natural radioactive isotopes, and of gold11 and copper12 using artificial radioactive isotopes. In the other technique a thin layer of the radioactive metal is deposited on one face of the solvent metal, and after diffusion has occurred the specimen is cut in thin sections to obtain the concentration-penetration curve. This method has been used to determine the coefficients of self-diffusion of gold,13 zinc, 14-16 silver,17 and copper.18 The second method was used for the work described in this paper. MATERIALS The coefficients of self-diffusion were determined in two grades of polycrystalline copper and in single crystals of copper. Commercial OFHC copper was used in the form of disks I in. in diameter by 1/8 in. thick. Samples of high-purity copper described by Phillips and Skinner19 were supplied through the courtesy of the American Smelting and Refining Co. The high-purity copper rod was used without remelting by cross-rolling to a thickness of 0.075 in., from which disks 7/8 in. in diameter were cut. A good grade of bus-bar copper was used to make the single crystals.

"The first printed report on Canada's coal resources was published in Paris in 1672(1. Written by Nicholas Denys, then Governor for France of Isle Royale (Cape Breton Island), the report dealt exclusively with the coal of the Atlantic region because little or nothing was known about the interior of North America. Clearly, also, he wrote about a resource of which much was known among the military and early settlers of that day. This early knowledge is not surprising because the presence of coal is clearly displayed in the coastal cliffs of Cape Breton as it was also, at a later date, to the first arrivals on Vancouver Island.An example of early use was that of the French garrison at Fort Louisburg in the first half of the 1700s. Still earlier, in 1643, Governor Winthrop of New England reported the receipt of a small ship load of coal from New Brunswick (2). Despite this early knowledge there was no significant development of coal mines until the 1800s. This had to await the ending of wars between the French and British factions and the growth of population. Basically, also, its development awaited the beginning of the Industrial Age. Organized coal mining began in Canada in 1825 with the formation of the General Mining Association. This British firm was the creation of a group of London jewellers which had been granted royal rights, by the British crown, to all minerals in Acadia (substantially the present Maritime Provinces). The Association took over a number of existing small mines and opened up larger operations in the Sydney coal field. Subsequently, it expanded to the mainland Nova Scotia fields at Stellarton and Springhill. The Association continued in existence as the major coal producer in Canada until 1899 when it sold its properties to the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company, Limited (3). This Montreal-based firm managed the coal mines as a major Canadian producer of coal until 1968 when financial problems led to the expropriation of the mines by the Government of Canada. The federal government established the Cape Breton Development Corporation to operate the larger mines on Cape Breton Island. This Crown corporation continues to be a .major producer of coal in Canada."

Environmental issues are having a significant impact on how automobiles are designed and ultimately disposed of at the end of their lives. On one hand, increasing concerns about landfill disposal have resulted in greater attention being focused on recycling materials and components from old junk autos. On the other hand, corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) requirements have led to downsizing, use of coatings, materials substitution and other measures that often make recycling more difficult. Automobile makers have responded to Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards in a variety of ways such as: Downsizing; Designing of more fuel efficient engines; Reducing aerodynamic drag by sleeker body designs; Redesigning by using thinner gauges of coated steels; and Substituting material such as lightweight plastic or aluminum parts for steel. Other driving forces affecting production techniques, choice of materials and recycling issues include the Clean Air Act and its amendments, RCRA. and other environmental legislation. The variety of materials used in automobiles makes the recycling issue extremely complex. Not only does one have different materials used in different automobiles for making similar parts, but changing designs, evolving environmental issues, landfill closures affecting solid waste disposal, and increasing raw material quality standards have created a complex set of dependencies related to materials use and recycling.

The quality of water for steam boilers is a serious question in Illinois, and has been the occasion of many investigations, undertaken either for the discovery of sources of a better supply, or for the purification of the supplies already at hand. LOCATION OF SUPPLIES. The sources of supply of which this paper treats lie along the right of way of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Company, and form a nearly straight line from Chicago, Illinois, on Lake Michigan, to Burlington, Iowa, on the Mississippi River. The supplies consist of surface-, ground- and deep well-waters ; their locations are given in Fig. 1, which is adapted from a map of Illinois published by the Illinois Railroad Commissioners. The influence of the geological formation on the water-supply of Illinois is fully treated in an article in the Seventeenth Annual Report of the U. S. A description of early dewatering practices includes a number of case histories; later dewatering practices also are detailed with case histories. There were disasters and some successes. Grouting generally was not successful. Deep wells are technically feasible and generally the economical solution to deep basement construction.

Companies are constantly searching for more effective methods of controlling and reducing costs. In recent years increased emphasis has been placed on cost reporting to the middle manager and down to the first-line foreman because this is the place where the money is really spent. Traditionally, operations management has been relegated to using cost systems designed by financial management for the use of financial management. They reflect the machinery necessary to produce profit and loss statements, and so-called cost reports emanating from these systems frequently have a heavy orientation toward product costing rather than the cost that an individual manager or foreman actually controls. In addition to direct operating costs by function or product type, they often include overhead allocations from local operations as well as from the home office. This type of full-absorption costing has many worthwhile uses but is of little or no use to operations management for cost control purposes. It is particularly discouraging to many supervisors because it includes so many categories of cost over which they have little or no control. It is for this reason that modern, aggressively managed companies are increasingly moving in the direction of responsibility cost reporting. It is the objective of responsibility cost reporting to report only direct operating costs over which the individual manager or foreman has complete control, thus facilitating cost control by fixing responsibility for cost.
