The vector sum peak particle velocity (PPV) of blast vibrations describes the blast vibration intensity more completely than the PPV of a single component waveform. It is more logical to use a vector sum PPV as a vibration limit than using a single component PPV. In 1980 the USBM recommended the frequency related peak particle velocity criterion. So far this method has been only applied to single component waveforms, but not to the vector sum PPV since there is no method available to associate a frequency to the vector sum PPV. The present paper describes a method to define a principal frequency associated with vector sum PPV. The method is based on the weighted average of the principal (zero-crossing) frequencies of the three tri-axial components at the time of the PPV.

In mining industry, one of the simplest methods to smooth the standard deviation of a given ore controlled property is to build longitudinal blending piles. The effect of homogeneization is obtained due to the fact that an entire cross-section of the pile is reclaimed at each time. The variance of the pile output is the sum of the internal cross-section slice variance plus the reclaimed slice variance. While the first term is a tipical short-term parameter and is absorbed by the process, the second one may be or may not be absorbed. The goal of designing blending piles is to minimize the reclaimed slice variance. Conditional Simulation as described in this paper, is an alternative method to do it. It is devised to design longitudinal blending piles, taking into consideration economical, geometrical and statistical parameters of the ore to be blended, in order to estimate the resulting effect. It presents advantages in relation to other methods for its adaptability and flexibility in simulating pile performances.

Site restoration at the L&M Mining Limited alluvial gold mining project at Waikaka near Gore, Southland is described. In 2000 mining operations started to recover alluvial gold beneath historical dredge tailings over 244 hectares in the flood plain of the Waikaka Stream. The project had an eight to nine year mine life but was prematurely closed in 2002 because of economic considerations. Restoration of the site back to pastoral farming, with shelter-belt and amenity tree, shrub, and wetland plantings is described. Dealings with the landowners and regulating authorities are addressed in the paper.

"Mining along with subsequent processing of the minerals often presents conditions where a wear- and/or corrosion-resistant alloy is needed to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency. This paper is intended to give an overview of the alloys that are currently being used, as well as those developed in recent years that could be used in the mining industry. Emphasis will be put on the iron-, nickel-,cobalt-based alloys and composites containing a variety of carbides. The characteristics, properties, product forms, and methods of application are presented. In addition, examples of the actual use of these wear-resistant materials are illustrated.IntroductionPreventing wear and corrosion is important in any industrial operations. In the mining industry, the process equipment typically suffers many different types of material degradation. Abrasion, impact, erosion, metal-to-metal wear and corrosion are typically encountered. Each situation requires different material characteristics to retard the degradation process. Therefore, it is essential to understand the characteristics of the materials and the effects of the alloying elements.There are four common classes of metallic materials for resisting wear and corrosion; namely, iron-based alloys, nickel-based alloys, cobalt-based alloys, and carbide-containing composites. Each class of material has its own characteristics. Depending on the chemical composition, the materials within each class can be vastly different in properties. In recent years, there have been materials developed in each of the four classes using the knowledge of the metallurgical principles and the effects of the alloying elements on the material degradation process.To use a wear-resistant alloy, it is also necessary to understand the available product forms and their application methods. Weld overlaying is a traditional way of using these alloys (Wu and Redman, 1994). In recent years, thermal spray is becoming popular. For applications where over-laying and spraying are impractical, solid components can be made by a variety of casting and powder metallurgy techniques. They can also be fabricated from the wrought products.To select a proper material for an application, it is important to understand not only the characteristics of the wear-resistant materials but also the degradation process. Due to the complexity of the processing environments, past experience is also helpful in making the decision on the material selection."

Sequential Gaussian conditional simulation of wide-spaced exploration data has been completed in order to optimise a drilling grid at Fortescue’s Eliwana deposit. The aim of this drill grid is to improve the confidence in the Inferred Mineral Resource. A mineralised domain within the Joffre Member of the Brockman Iron Formation was selected to be tested as it makes up a large proportion of the Inferred Mineral Resource and is drilled at a reasonable spacing.One hundred realisations of Fe, SiO2 and Al2O3 grades were completed in the domain. Three realisations were selected for each analyte to represent the range of equiprobable values and a further realisation was selected to represent the truth data set. These realisations were used to flag theoretical drill holes on varying spacings and patterns. The theoretical drill holes were used to estimate into block models using ordinary kriging.These estimates were analysed and the accuracy and precision of each drill spacing was assessed. It was concluded that the greatest improvement in estimation results was noted at either a 100 m × 50 m or 50 m × 50 m spacing.CITATION:Taylor, C and Retz, E, 2015. "The study of the physical properties of asbestos minerals requires a careful isolation of the fiber from the wall rock and, at a later stage, a comparison of these physical properties with those of fibers that have passed through the milling and beneficiation processes.The effects of mineral impurities, loss of fiber length and the formation of extreme fines (asbestic and/or associated minerals) often show up in the formation of special asbestos products as well as in the commercial production of asbestos papers, mill-boards, asbestos cement products, plastics and insulation materials, and in the filtration of blood plasma and wines.Numerous test methods have been developed in Canada and in England for use in the asbestos industry. Special treatments of asbestos fibers have been used to improve their physical and chemical properties and to eliminate impurities.Numerous problems connected with the use of asbestos fibers are discussed, such as the effects of asbestos on filtration, surface area, surface treatments using organic or inorganic materials, the surface charge on the fiber, the presence of magnetite and air pollution elimination. Biological studies on finely ground asbestos, when dispersed in 0.9 per cent sodium chloride solution and then sterilized and injected into hamsters, show that by reducing the dose, the tissue damage can be largely avoided. In these experiments, Arizona asbestos fibers were carefully extracted from the wall rock, finely ground, and examined chemically and micros-copically for any mineral impurities that might be present so that any effect on the hamsters would be directly due to the presence of the asbestos. The harsh Arizona fiber induced more extensive tissue response than the soft fiber when tested in hamsters."

WEINBERG,' in an investigation of solute distributions along unidirectionally solidified rods of dilute silver in tin alloys, concluded that, for rods of 2 mm diameter or larger, a very high degree of convective mixing takes place in the melt ahead of the advancing interface. Suggested causes for this mixing were (1) thermal convection, (2) convective currents set up by changes in fluid density associated with concentration gradients, and (3) currents set up by changes in volume during freezing. Evidence was presented that causes (2) and (3) were not primarily responsible for solute mixing. Further, convective mixing took place in horizontal rods with temperature gradients as low as 6°C per cm, putting doubt on the importance of thermal convection. In the present work, convective mixing is examined in melts with known initial solute distributions. The absence of a moving solid-liquid interface eliminates convection caused by volume changes on solidification. In the first experiment, three silica tubes 2 mm in diameter and approximately 20 cm long were filled with an alloy of 100 ppm Ag in tin (99.999 pct purity), placed adjacent to one another in a horizontal furnace, and solidified from one end at 1 cm per hr. A110, a Y emitter, was used as tracer. A few centimeters at the start of the rod were left un-melted, to determine the initial concentration Go. The transport of lithium through a supported liquid membrane was studied with a mixture of D2EHPA and TBP in kerosene as a mobile carrier. In the flat- sheet supported liquid membrane(SLM) system, experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of concentration of mobile carriers in the membrane solution, hydrogen ion in the feed solution, and temperature on the transport of lithium. Experimental results agreed well with a transport model for permeating lithium across the liquid membrane. The permeation rates of lithium can be explained in terms of diffusion of a Li-complex through the membrane phase. For a practical application of an SLM method, a hollow fiber module has been used and lithium can be concentrated more than three times in 24 hours.

With the aid of modern computer automation, certain mathematical techniques are easily adapted to geophysical, geochemical and geological data analysis. First and second derivative filtering (or transformation) of raw data, in many cases, gives a better indication of anomalous conditions than conventional methods of analysis. The calculations involved, which are tedious manually, are simple, accurate and fast with the assistance of Fourier analysis and modern computers.

In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the 5,100 acre (2,065 ha) Rubicon RARE II area (No. 5026) in the El Dorado National Forest (fig. 1). Work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that potential for mineral resources in the area is low. Samples from small gravel deposits along the Rubicon River and from favorable structures in the area contained smart amounts of economic minerals. A Tertiary river channel near the north area boundary contains gold values as much as $137.60 per cu yd ($180 per cu m) [(gold at $400 per troy oz ($12.86 per g)]. The channel does not cross the study area. Energy resource potential, including oil, gas, or geothermal, does not exist in this geologic environment.

A method of retrofitting air-fuel burners with oxy-fuel capability overcomes the potential problems associated with oxygen combustion in aluminum melting furnaces. The retrofit burner uses the existing combustion air connection, burner housing, and burner tile and replaces the gas tube with an oxy-gas burner. Maintaining a portion of the air flow to the burner reduces the potential for localized overheating. Proper design of the burner reduces NOx emissions by moderating the flame temperature with furnace gas recirculation. Economic analysis of using oxygen shows the benefits are increased productivity and reduced overall unit cost of melting. In practice, the melt rate in rotary furnaces increases by up to 50% and by up to 35% in reverberatory furnaces. Oxygen utilization reduces total melting cost by 112-314 cents per pound of aluminum melted.

Minerals are being trans-ported much farther than in prior decades and at much less cost. Bulk and package terminals are becoming increasingly common as a means to take advantage of freight rate savings and to provide enhanced service to far-away customers. Water and rail transportation are being used increasingly to penetrate markets considered unreachable Just a few years ago.

Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh's official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt's prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,' so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt's most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface. The research and development of a pattern recognition system which can predict incipient failures and safety hazards in the mine power network is described. An examination of mine electrical safety hazards revealed they are often related to the electrical equipment down-time experienced on mine sections. Based on this, a method is proposed that can improve both production and safety, without compromising either. Equipment failure modes are examined to illustrate how the ultimate failure can be predicted for enough in advance to allow a convenient and safe repair, followed by a discussion of actual monitoring system performance. Finally, the paper is concluded by projections of the system's utility to industry.

Commonly accepted maintenance methods are being outdated by the rapid acceptance and use of more complicated hydraulic circuitry on modern mining equipment. It is no longer adequate to use the maintenance program to merely repair or sustain equipment operation. Ever increasing operating costs place a huge premium on lost production time. It has, therefore, placed the maintenance programs in the position of being required to alleviate equipment malfunctions on production shifts and still attain the maximum unit life from each component part. Ireland mine of Hanna Coal Co., which operates two production shifts and one maintenance shift per day, performs hydraulic maintenance with a plan that is geared to assure the bulk of work being handled on the midnight or maintenance shift. Production is thus allowed to continue without interruption from major hydraulic component malfunction. The plan is called selective maintenance because the specific part to be worked on and the time the work is to be accomplished are selected according to a definite plan.

SINCE the discovery of von Laue, that a crystal forms a natural grating for X-rays, our knowledge of the structure of solids has gone forward with rapid strides. This progress is not only of purely scientific interest, but has also yielded direct technological results. One of the most valuable results is the broadening of our knowledge of the structure of pure metals and alloys. To promote these studies it is often desirable to have at our disposal pieces of metal consisting of one single crystal. As is so often the case in the natural sciences, we obtain the best results by making our earliest experiments on pure, simple materials and avoiding unnecessary complications. The Cryogen Laboratory at Leyden followed this method with much success, because the work was done at such low temperatures that the heat movement of the atoms was almost absent. Similarly we can simplify the studies of metals by leaving out of consideration the influence of the grain boundaries and the mutual influence of the crystals by using unicrystalline instead of polycrystalline metal. Methods of making single crystals have been scientifically studied during the past few years. Some methods were already known in the arts, but these have been improved and new methods have been developed. The methods for making metallic single crystals may be divided into the following groups: A. From the liquid state B. From the gaseous state C. Electrolytically D. It has been reported that expanded poIystyrene and ANFO prills ‘were mixed on a blasting site for controlled blasting (ISANOL). Although there seems to be few possibility of their segregation because mixing on a blasting site is done, there is a great possibility of segregation in packing, transportation and loading of the product due to the different densities of the two ingredients in Japan where mixing on a blasting site still remains inoperative. The fiee-flowing property of ANFO prills was lost with the passage of time because the Abel oil infiltrated into the expanded polystyrene and that gave the product high viscosity.

Objective: On-the-job training (OJT) is a common means of training workers. By definition, it seems relatively simple. However, to be effective, training must go beyond the simple process of following an experienced worker around the workplace— sometimes called the "follow Joe" method. NIOSH researchers spoke with human resources personnel, safety and health specialists, supervisors, experienced miners, and new miners and found that OJT was of high interest, but was rarely part of a formal or standardized program. Various training methods have evolved to ensure that a trainee will absorb the information presented rather than simply emulate what the instructor is teaching. These methods have been brought together into a published guide for developing an effective formalized OJT program. The guide (Information Circular (IC) 9479) is called "Coaching Skills for On-the-Job Trainers." It contains materials and suggestions for your company or mine to conduct a 1-day workshop for teaching OJT trainers how to be better coaches to less experienced workers. The guide was created by the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory and a safety professional from a private mining company.

"The yearly production from the Asbestos Hill pit is 1,550,000 tons of asbestos ore, with a yield varying between 18 and 20 % . The orebody was exposed at the top of a hill, and initial production started without having to remove any overburden. The projected ratio of barren rock to ore, based on the present orebody, was 2 to 1. However, as it was necessary to push back the upper benches, this ratio has changed to 3 to 1. The final pit will be 2,300 feet long by 1,000 feet at the longest and widest points. The final depth will be 680 ft. A pit slope stability study was carried out and an average wall angle of 60-70 degrees must be maintained. Preshearing of final pit limits will produce good wall stability. Permanent access ramps will be 60 ft wide, with an 8 % maximum grade. Geological conditions and the low rock temperature are the major causes of the operation's drilling and blasting problems."
