This paper presents the analytical results obtained from numerical simulation of reinforced concrete slabs strengthened with various FRP systems and subjected to blast loading. A three-dimensional finite element model using AUTODYN software was used to predict the overall behavior of the slabs. The numerical results were validated by comparing with experimental results from a program carried out to investigate the efficiency of different strengthening systems on the blast resistance improvement of small-scale reinforced concrete (RC) slabs. The experimental program consisted of testing nine RC slabs strengthened with three different externally bonded (EB) FRP systems attached at the bottom side of the slabs and one RC slab tested without strengthening for comparison purposes. The EB FRP strengthening systems investigated included two layers of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets, two layers of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) sheets, and one layer of Glass-Fiber Resin Polymer (GRP) sheet. Different epoxy resin, patching mortars and impregnating epoxy adhesives were used for the slab surface preparation and FRP system application of the strengthening layers. The aim was to evaluate the residual strength of the test specimens after exposure to blast loads. The blast loading parameters were evaluated for each test using AUTODYN simulation and compared with the computer program CONWEP. All specimens were subjected to same spherical TNT charge weight and stand-off distance with the respect to the slab top surface. Extensive comparison is made between the experimental results and the AUTODYN simulations for the control unstrengthened slab and the strengthened slabs including time history records of the bottom steel strain and mid-span acceleration and the peak dynamic deflection of the slabs.

The addition of copper sulfate to mineral slurries in order to ?activate? sulfide mineral surfaces for enhanced collector molecule adsorption, and hence enhanced recovery via flotation, is a com-mon mineral processing practice. It has been established in a laboratory situation that the addition of CuSO4 in conjunction with xanthate collector increases the flotation rate of pentlandite as compared to the addition of collector alone. However, it remains unclear whether the addition of CuSO4has a similar effect within mineral processing circuits. We examine here the effect of pre-activation oxidation on the copper activation of pentlandite and monoclinic and hexagonal pyrrhotite. All activation experiments were carried out at pH 9 using a total solution content of copper ions equivalent to one monolayer (0.210 -4 moles, 110-4M). Copper loss from solution was extremely rapid in all cases with less than 10 % remaining after 10s. EDTA extraction and solution analysis clearly demonstrated that copper activation was via direct surface adsorption and not an ion exchange process, as is the case for sphalerite, and that most copper on the surfaces is in the form of Cu(I). ToF-SIMS analyses of the mineral surfaces subsequent to copper activation show increased surface oxidation on increased conditioning time prior to copper activation. However, there is a significant decrease in surface oxidation on comparison of samples that have otherwise been prepared in the same manner but where one has been exposed to copper solution rather than water. This suggests that copper activation stabilises the surface and reduces the propensity for oxidation. Regardless of the length of pre-activation oxidation time only Fe(III) (no Fe(II)-S) was observed by XPS analysis, indicating a highly oxidised surface layer dominated by Fe-O-OH species. The presence of Cu(II) on the mineral surface is indicative of the formation of Cu(II)-containing precipitates and indicates non-mineral specific activation resulting in increased recovery but lower grade. Mineral specific copper adsorption, as evidenced by the presence of Cu(I), is required to improve both grade and recovery. Prolonged oxidation prior to copper activation causes a reduction in the Cu(I) to Cu(II) ratio on the mineral surfaces as compared to either fresh surfaces or surfaces oxidised for 1 minute only. This strongly indicates that the copper activation process is less effective on highly oxidised surfaces.

This paper presents a technique for representing and analyzing random motions and hazardous events in a computer simulated three-dimensional workplace, providing machine designers and safety analysts with a new technique to evaluate ways to reduce operator-machine interaction hazards. Technical data in this paper is based upon a project striving to reduce workers' risks from being hit by underground mining machinery in a confined space. By simulating motions of an operator's random behavior and a machine's appendage, researchers can accurately identify hazards, and use that information to form safe designs for mining equipment appendage velocity. Validating the model provided improvements in the operator's optimal viewing area, work task- starting positions, and operator's motions for a more accurate random behavior. Preliminary simulation results provided (1) an interesting approach to research data gathering in that there was no need for live subjects and test sites and costs associated with experiments become insignificant and (2) that the model was versatile by showing it was capable of accurately mimicking the range collision forces versus speed, operators' size, and risk behaviors found in actual industrial situations and showed (I) that response time significantly affects the number of collisions experienced by the virtual subject and (2) that analysts must be discerning with the model and not read more From the databases than what the simulation model was designed to deliver. The technology applied to shaft sinking has lagged far behind other construction activities. While surface oriented construction and mining have made great strides with new processes and equipment, the majority of shafts sunk currently still follow a drill, blast and muck-out cycle developed in the 16th century. Today, in 1979, the shaft sinking industry is in the midst of its own private industrial revolution. Millions of dollars are being spent annually by industry and government alike to spring the art of shaft sinking into the 20th century. The objective of this paper is to review a few of the newest mechanized schemes for shaft sinking. This is not a theoretical review, however, but a practical one, and deals only with hardware and projects which are currently on jobsites. Figure 1 shows the equipment. On the left is the 241SB 184, a 24 foot diameter blind shaft borer. This machine is currently at about 200 feet, constructing a coal mine shaft in Alabama. It is built and utilized in a manner similar to a tunnel borer. In the upper center is the 1211SR, a 12 foot diameter blind shaft reamer. This machine follows a 6 foot pre-drilled blind pilot hole, and is at work in Chicago. On the upper right is the 121BR, a powerful new blind drill. Just below it is the conical drill head for the 121BR which can utilize either carbide or standard disc cutters. At the center bottom is an expandable back reaming head which can be used to enlarge a drilled shaft up to a maximum of 16 feet diameter, or can be used to produce a shaft having several diameter changes. This equipment is also in use in Chicago.

Total mechanisation in the Western district of New South Wales is quite a recent addition to productive methods in that State, for it was only in 1940 that the first colliery was equipped for this method of winning coal. Now almost all mines either are totally mechanised or are planning to get their coal by these means.This marked change in recent years is explained by the salient features of the industry's history. Collieries in New South Wales had generally been subjected to low selling prices forced on them by over-production and severe competition. Little money was available out of profits to purchase machinery, and returns on capital were so poor that inducement to invest money in the industry was nonexistent.The second world war brought price fixing at the already low prices. It was not until the post-war period that there has been any inducement to mechanise.Much credit for mechanisation can be given to the Joint Coal Board, a government body formed in 1948. Pursuing a broad plan for the rejuvenation of the industry, this Board, purchased large quantities of machinery for use in, mines under hire-purchase agreement. These agreements encouraged machine mining, and this fact, together with the ensuing production economies, has improved the financial position of the industry.The Board has also been instrumental in the granting of increases in the fixed price of coal, so that the industry has been given an even greater boost in the direction of mechanisation.

This evaluation may occur after anew control system has been commissioned. In other cases an existing plant which is operated manually may be automated only In part in order to determine In ether the met of it should be. Finally. in some instances dynamic isolation my be used prior to installation of the control system to determine the strategy to be used or to evaluate the improvements In process performance expected from automatic control. This paper describes the development of a methodology for making these evaluations. In order to obtain an accurate assessment of Improvements In a short time, statistical methods can be employed. Mineral processing plant, are subjected to many types of both random and deterministic disturbances of various duration. The statistical method, available for process control at analysis are designed to counter the obscuring effects that random disturbances have on such as evaluation. The basis for evaluation and comparison is some freely chosen measures of process performance termed the performance index or objective function. The experimental data used to calculate the performance index should, if possible, be collected by alternately running a circuit Or plant with the two or more type, or control being tested ("serial testing”) or more preferably, by running two circuits with the two type, of control side by side ("parallel testing") . The performance index is a random variable so that when comparing two types of control, statistical hypothesis testing must be used. By testing s hypothesis statistically one accept, or reject, a (null) hypothesis [ ] concerning the mean or variance of one or more performance indices. For example, a hypothesis Ho might be that the mean of a performance index with stabilizing control is larger than with manual control. Defining a Performance Index The performance index, denoted by [ ] , is a measure by which alternative strategies or situations my be cam peered on either s technical or an economic basis (see Table 1). Technical measures are concerned with the effects of control on process variables or outputs or on the deviations of controlled variable, from their setpoints. For commotion circuit, important technical measures of performance are throughput, product fineness and the consumption of liners, media and electrical energy. For flotation circuits important technical .satires are recovery, grade and reagent consumption. Economic measure such a, cost and profit n usually determined from a combination of technical measures and are usually the final factor upon which a decision may be made, although a control system my achieve higher values of technical measure , the control effort expended my be of such magnitude that the economic measures, such as cost, are poor. Running Comparisons Comparison, between automatic and manual control are normally done with data obtained before and after control system Installation, unless ore characteristics remain the same during the period of data collection the results will be biased. By running the test circuit with the control system alternately turned on and curled off until all possible ore type, have been run through the circuit, unbiased result, can be obtained. This mode of testing is termed “serial testing.” An alternative and potentially more powerful and quicker made of testing is "parallel testing" in which two circuits, one with the type of control being tested and one without, arm run aide by side. In this type of testing both circuits process the same ore so that valid results occur sooner than with aerial testing. The data may be averaged before testing or the differences in the performance indices may first be calculated before averaging. However, the two circuits must be nearly identical in their mechanical characteristics otherwise differences other than the degree of control will bias the results. It mechanical differences exist than it my be necessary to adjust one or the circuits prior to testing. Sometimes it is possible to correct far mechanical differences based on Inherent efficiency calculations made with a model. Hypothesis Testing Once the data is collected, hypothesis fencing can be carried out to determine if the automatic control system has resulted in a statistically significant improvement. In the flotation process, control of the stability of the froth is extremely critical. In the case where the froth is too stable then mechanical entrainment of particles can occur but in the opposite case, where the froth is too unstable and difficult to skimm-off, then a reduction in recovery can result. In minerals and deinking flotation, commercial fatty acids are used and may act as both both collectors and frothers. However, frequently the fatty acids are mixed with nonionic ethoxylated surfactants to give more effective froth control and increase the flotation performance. It is of interest to note from the surface chemistry literature, that such mixtures may cause synergistic effects in surface activity which may explain changes in bubble size, foaming and carry over of particles. In the present study, we have carried out foaming and drainage experiment with oleic acid and model nonionic surfactants; hexa(ethylene glycol) mono-dodecyl ether, C12E6 and tetra (ethylene glycol) mono-dodecyl ether, C12E4 both in separate and mixed systems. Frothing was carried out in a column, equipped with a series of conductivity electrodes which enabled the water content of the froth to be measured along the length of the column, during various stages of the drainage process. The variation in water content of the froth enabled the process to be characterised by distinct three stages; (a) an entrainment state where the water transfer from the bulk phase to the froth was dominant (b) a steady state when entrainment and drainage are balanced and no water is transferred to or from the froth and (c) the drainage step when drainage predominates and the volume of the bulk phase increases. We also carried out surface tension measurements on the oleic acid/ nonionic systems and related the results to the frothing and drainage performance. From the surface tension data, the adsorption interaction parameter of the mixed systems at the air/solution interface could be calculated and was found to depend on the oleate/ nonionic surfactant ratio. This value was related to the frothing performance and the results indicated a positive interaction parameter for the mixed surfactant systems which could explained the synergistic effects in frothing performance.

The KOV, Kananga and Tilwezembe copper-cobalt deposits in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have lain dormant for over ten years due to lack of funding by the State-owned mining company, Gecamines. Nikanor Pic through its operating company DCP has secured the mining titles from the DRC government and has commenced redevelopment of these large copper deposits. DCP plans to produce 250,000 tonnes per annum of LME Grade "A" copper cathode and up to 30,000 tonnes per annum of cobalt salts. This paper describes the geology, re-development of the KOV mine and the two smaller mines, Kananga and Tilwezembe, the design of a new copper-cobalt processing facility and the challenges in refurbishing the associated infrastructure.

AN investigation of the behavior of inclusions in steel several years ago1 led to the conclusion that some of the commonly occurring inclusions in steel have appreciable solubilities, particularly in liquid steel. In the belief that further study and clarification of this matter was warranted, a laboratory study of oxides in liquid steel was started. These oxides are generally the result of deoxidation treatment, and the basis of an understanding of their behavior must be, therefore, the behavior of the deoxidizer in liquid iron. The Fe-Si-O system was selected for the first study, and the apparatus used and experiments conducted are described herein. APPARATUS The apparatus is shown in Fig. I and the system is shown by diagram in Fig. 2. Furnace Atmosphere Commercial hydrogen (1) passes through an orifice (2) into a manometric system that measures the tankside pressure (3) and the back pressure (4) in the system. A water trap (5) guards against excess tankside pressure. A by-pass with stopcocks (6 and 7) is provided, so that the hydrogen can be routed directly from the tank to the furnace if desired. When stopcock 7 is closed and stopcock 6 is open, the gas proceeds through the conditioning train, of which the first unit is a furnace (8) that contains platinized asbestos at 350°C. The temperature is measured by a thermo-couple and potentiometer (9) and is controlled by a slidewire resistance (10). In [ ] this furnace free oxygen is converted to water vapor. The exiting gas passes over a water bath (11) kept slightly below boiling temperature by an auxiliary heating unit (12). This unit also heats a surrounding copper coil (13) containing water, and the heated water rises through a collar (14)

In Indiana, 349 wells were drilled for oil and gas in the year 1942. Of this number, 125 oil wells and 21 gas wells were successfully completed and 203 were dry holes. Drilling activity declined 37 per cent as compared with that of the year 1941. This reduction was brought about largely by Federal Conservation Order M-68, restricting drilling to one well on 40 acres, in order to save steel. This Order was later supplemented to permit closer spacing of wells drilled to sandstone formations in southwestern Indiana. Most of the drilling in 1942 was in the southwestern part of the state. Posey County ranked first, with 94 completions and 44 producers; Gibson County, second, with 77 completions and 38 producing oil wells and 2 gas wells. There were 58 drilling operations in the state at the end of the year. During 1942 a total of 589,734 ft. of hole was drilled, of which 231,702 ft. was wildcat footage. The total initial production of the oil wells completed was 9974 bbl. and of the gas wells, 11,148,000 cu. ft. (Table 2). Of the 349 wells completed, 122 were wildcat wells (Table 3); 26 were completed as oil wells; 17 were extensions to proven fields and 9 discovered new pools. Posey County was foremost in wildcat drilling, with 37 wells completed (Table 6). Thirty-five per cent of the wells drilled in 1942 were wildcat, as compared with 25.5 per cent in 1941. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcat wells drilled in 1943 will be greater, although the total number ol ,wells drilled in the state will probably be less. The new discoveries in Indiana in I942 were, for the most part, one-well pools in the southwestern part—in Posey, Gibson and Spencer Counties (Table 4). Most of the development in pools took place in the . Hazelton and Kirksville pools in Gibson County, Mr. Vernon pool in Posey County and the Vernon Heights pool in Vander-burgh County. Deeper production was obtained from the Osage limestone in the Hazelton pool at a depth of 2402 ft., 650 ft. below the productive McClosky limestone. The well had an initial production of 140 barrels. Extensions to 17 pools in the southwestern part of the state were successfully completed (Table 5). An interesting development during 1942 was new production from the Devonian limestone in the Dodds Bridge pool, Sullivan County. The Ohio Oil Co. deepened one of its wells, which had been producing from a shallow sand, to the,Devonian, and it was completed for an initial production of 77 bbl. Five other Devonian producing wells were completed in that area. Crude-oil production in Indiana in 1942 was 6,609,000 bbl. (Table I). The Griffin field, Gibson and Posey Counties, which produced approximately 3,550,000 bbl., accounted for more than half of the state's production. Today numerous ores contain valuable minerals in finely disseminated form; and although the recovery of these fine mineral particles is generally exceedingly difficult, diminishing raw material resources necessitates the recovery of such mineral values. In many systems, the efficiency of recovering fine particles is still extremely low and often fine particles must be discarded as slimes. However, in recent years, various advances have taken place in the recovery of mineral particles in the very fine size range. In this paper, the background and performance of a number of processes for fine particle processing and separation are reviewed and discussed, particularly from the point of view of how fine particle recovery might be improved.

This paper addresses two issues affecting the international ferrochromium market as they pertain to the changing pattern of U. S. chromium import dependency. These issues are 1) the long-term ferrochromium production cost differential between the United States and the Republic of South Africa and 2) the ability of Zimbabwe to expand ferrochromium production and exportation. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of chromium in the form of chromite and ferrochromium from 10 market economy countries. South African ferrochromium producers are shown to have a long-term production cost advantage over U.S. producers of $0.03 to $0.04 per pound of contained chromium, in 1981 dollars. Zimbabwean ferrochromium production and exportation are expected to increase in the future. Major expansions of production capacity will be dependent upon alleviating potentially serious constraints in electric power, rail, and port facilities. In the long term, ferrochromium production costs in Zimbabwe are expected to increase faster than the rate of inflation, because as chromite mining from the podiform resources in Zimbabwe decreases, production from the Great Dyke resources will increase.

Numerous problems encountered in the mining of narrow vein deposits challenge the productivity, competitiveness and profitability of many mines. Mechanization of mining operations is one of the most important means to ensure the healthy survival of this mining sector. Vein deposits account for nearly all the world's primary silver production, as well as a significant portion of gold, tin, copper lead and zinc. In North America, narrow vein mining constitutes an important sector of the industry. Operators exploiting such deposits are concerned with the most appropriate mining method and equipment to mine in such a way as to minimize waste rock dilution. Unfortunately, most of the equipment available does not meet the additional geological and economical restrictions typical of narrow vein mining. Thus, mining these deposits is labor intensive and can result in low productivity. Consequently, the profitability of many such mines is reduced. Increased mechanization is one of the solutions to ensure their healthy survival. This paper reviews the state-of-the art in mining equipment with reference to narrow vein mining limitations. Problems encountered Geological conditions and economical factors have a decisive impact on the choice of mining method and equipment. Many ore bodies are relatively small, usually erratically distributed, often less than 2 m (6.5 ft) wide, with dips ranging from 0° to 90°. To make things worse, ore body limits are sometimes difficult to determine and the ground is hard and abrasive.

INTRODUCTION The demand for aluminum metal and thus for alumina and bauxite (the primary sources), is expected to increase at an annual rate of about 6% through the year 1980. It appears that about 90% of the future aluminum metal requirements could be produced at domestic plants but the production would remain dependent on the use of imported bauxite and alumina. The U.S. dependence on foreign bauxite and alumina is of considerable economic and strategic concern because availability and prices are very sensitive to changes in the political climate in the exporting countries. Dependence of the United States on foreign sources of bauxite closely parallels its dependence on foreign sources of oil, particularly since ten countries, including most of the world's major bauxite exporting countries, recently have formed the Inter- national Bauxite Association (IBA) for the specific purpose of increasing revenue for the participating countries. Although it is clear that long-term aluminum requirements cannot be fulfilled by domestic resources of bauxite,; the U.S. has an almost unlimited supply of aluminous resources such as Kaolinite (38% Al203), Alunite (37% Al203), Dawsonite (35% A1203), and Anorthosite (29% A1203)

Two types of flammability limits have been measured for various dusts in the Fike 1-m3 (1000-L) chamber and in the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) 20-L chamber. The first limit is the minimum explosible concentration (MEC), which was measured at several ignition energies. In addition to the three dusts studied previously (bituminous coal, anthracite coal, and gilsonite), this work continues the effort by adding three additional dusts: RoRo93, lycopodium, and iron powder. These materials were chosen to extend the testing to non-coal materials as well as to a metallic dust. The new MEC data corroborate the previous observations that very strong ignitors can overdrive the ignition in the smaller 20-L chamber. Recommendations are given in regard to appropriate ignition energies to be used in the two chambers. The study also considered the other limiting component, oxygen. Limiting oxygen concentration (LOC) testing was performed in the same 20-L and 1-m3 vessels for gilsonite, bituminous coal, RoRo93, and aluminum dusts. The objective was to establish the protocol for testing at different volumes. A limited investigation was made into overdriving in the 20-L vessel. The LOC results tended to show slightly lower results for the smaller test volume. The results indicated that overdriving could occur and that ignition energies of 2.5 kJ in the 20-L vessel would yield comparable results to those in the 1- m3 vessel using 10.0 kJ. The studies also illustrate the importance of dust concentration on LOC determinations.

In the non-operational ?Górka? quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha, containing approximately 1 million ton wastes from high aluminium content materials (incl. about 400000 t of wastes from aluminum hydroxide production), and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water and infiltrates from the disposal site mentioned. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Górka pond is both their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and a variable analysis of pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides, first of all, remedial pumping and a treatment of effluents retained in the Górka reservoir. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant according to a process verified so far on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product, a brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl) whose amount may reach up to 100000 m3 might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine, which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. In parallel, an intake of underflows of infiltrates would be provided (previous geochemical identification) in order to take them away from the high aluminum site (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches). Such effluents would be subject to treatment. The successive stage is the utilization of approx. 50000 m3 of bottom slurry, left in the emptied reservoir, in the production of self-solidifying mixtures, which would be then used for sealing the bottom and the banks of the Górka reservoir. The empty and sealed reservoir would be filled up with a volume of approx. 600000 t of ashes, coming from coal burning in the thermal-electric power station. For the last stage, instead, is scheduled the rehabilitation of the entire waste disposal site in the Górka quarry. The site will be drained, covered with a leveling, sealing and rehabilitating layer, which will allow to introduce plants on the rehabilitated waste site. A modified coal flotation characterization procedure, referred to as the Advanced Flotation Washability (AFW) technique, has been developed which, compared to traditional procedures, provides a more accurate prediction of the optimum separation performance achievable by a froth flotation process. The AFW procedure uses a vertically-baffled flotation column which provides enhanced selectivity among particles of varying degrees of hydrophobicity due to a plug-flow environment and an improved carrying-capacity environment. In fact, the separation performance of the traditional procedures was enhanced by increasing the possibility of operating under improved selectivity conditions. The separation performance provided by the AFW procedure was superior to that obtained from multiple cleaning stages using commercially-available flotation columns under both kinetic and carrying-capacity limiting conditions.

The mining industry is a relatively minor user of water, which has historically been largely soured from private schemes. Frequently mines are often located in areas with limited available water resources. Water reform is increasingly affecting access to water for new mining projects and mining companies are being required to consider the value of water and the implications of reliability in their planning. This paper seeks to briefly review the water reform process in Australia and how it is affecting the mining industry with reference to some recent project experience.

Field reconnaissance and laboratory tests an clay from South Windsor, Hartford County, Conn., indicate that the clay is suitable for lightweight aggregate raw material. Exploration of the deposit supports the conclusion that the reserves of clay are sufficient for economical mining operations to produce lightweight aggregate. Preliminary tests indicated that the clay has a short bloating range. Initial expansion occurred at 2,000° F, and at 2,100° F the clay was slightly overfired and sticky. Rotary kiln tests verified the preliminary data, and these tests showed that the clay would make a good lightweight aggregate if the processing temperature and the kiln feed sizes were closely controlled. Lightweight concrete made from the processed aggregate had properties comparable to those of concrete made from a commercial clay aggregate.
