This paper describes the application of the Graphics Assisted Under Ground Engineering (GAUGE) software to a 2-layered room and pillar hard rock mine. The graphics- assisted mine modeling and mine planning capabilities of GAUGE are demonstrated. The system uses polygons to model the room and pillar mine design and displays the model in plan view on the graphics screen,. The planning engineer interactively specifies areas to be mined in the medium or long term. The system calculates and accumulates tonnages and grades for the user-specified areas based on the layer being mined and the particular unit operation (drifting, widening or benching).

Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located on Sumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54000m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2km2 and to a depth of 1000m below surface (412m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55g/t Au (variable cutoff) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource. The deposit is associated with a caic-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200m diameter at surface to 500m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbldykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.

In June of 1998, the DeBruce Grain Elevator was devastated by an accidental explosion caused by the unintentional ignition of grain dust. The DeBruce grain elevator was the largest ‘single head-house’ grain elevator in the nation. It was comprised of 450 cylindrical grain silos, 30 feet in diameter by 120 feet tall, with a centrally located headhouse. Immediately after the explosion, rescue operations were started for seven missing workers. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had taken over operations of the site by day two. On day three FEMA contacted the Washington DC office of the Department of Energy for explosive expertise, who in turn contacted explosives experts at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL). FEMA was looking for guidance in making the decision to downgrade their operation from a rescue to a recovery operation. Based on some chemical equilibrium calculations, and basic explosive engineering techniques, the SNL/LANL team was able to provide the necessary input to allow the decision to be made for the operational downgrade. At this point, only one worker remained un-recovered.

In this paper, the authors describe major changes in drilling and blasting methods instituted at the Zortman And Landusky Mining Company Properties to maintain the viability of these north central Montana surface mines in the present period of depressed precious metal prices. The authors explain how improved drilling procedures minimized problems due to uneven benches and floors. They also describe changes in explosives loading and delay blasting techniques which improved fragmentation, thus increasing metal recovery from heap leaching. Quantities were increased substantially and a new bulk explosives loading system was placed in service with a special down-the-hole bulk loading truck and storage facilities for bulk ANFO and bulk emulsion. At the same time, drill patterns were expanded by nearly 40%. The authors also describe a new technique of using explosives to selectively cast waste and ore in different directions so as to reduce the cost of separating the ore.

The oxidation of sphalerite particles of 60 to 100 mesh size was studied in a fluidized bed of low 02 concentration at 900¦C. Par- tial pressure of 02 in the fluidizing 02-N2 gas mixture was chosen between 0.0009 and 0.02 atm. In the region of p02 between 0.008 and 0.02 atm, the oxidation rate was lowered with the decrease of p02, and the unreacted-core model was applied. At lower pbelow 0.008 atm, the reaction rate was enhanced as compared with the calcu- lated values from the unreacted-core model. From microscopic examination, it was found that ZnS was evaporated at the particle surface and the dissociated Zn vapor was oxidized in the gas phase. Initial reaction rate and the distance between the surface of inner sphaler- ite core and the oxide shell were studied based on the model of enhanced oxidation.

ABSTRACT The subject of gold flotation has been reviewed extensively. Most of these reviews focus on the theories of gold flotation and the physical and chemical effects that may impact the efficacy of the gold flotation process. The current status of gold flotation chemistry as it is being applied in industry has not been widely addressed. This paper reviews current gold flotation practice and research advancements and discusses how these applications tie in with the current understanding of gold flotation chemistry. Survey results from worldwide gold flotation operations are analyzed. Potential future areas of gold flotation research are highlighted.

Through a contract, the Bureau of Mines has funded the development of an Automated Breathing Metabolic Simulator (ABMS). The ABMS simulates man in all of the breathing and metabolic parameters for monitoring support and resuscitation equipment. For the first time, complete breathing and metabolic simulation are incorporated in the same device. Breathing rate, breathing depth, breath velocity contour, oxygen uptake, and carbon dioxide release are all variable over wide ranges, simulating conditions from sleep to hard work with respiratory exchange ratios covering the range of hypoventilation to hyperventilation. In addition, all of these parameters are remotely controlled to facilitate the use of the device in hostile test environments. The exhaled breath is also at body temperature and completely saturated. The simulation in faith¬ful to the extent of having a variable functional residual capacity and an anatomical dead space equivalent to that of humans. The ABMS will be used as a stand-in for humans in test and validation of respiratory equipment, permitting more extensive and safer evaluation in hazardous environments where human testing would have to be limited. In addition, it will greatly reduce the cost of prolonged testing in cases where simulation chambers with human subjects require three shifts of crews, including standby physicians. Perhaps most importantly, it will provide a calculated and reproducible test and validation facility. The ABMS is under complete computer control. Through a typewriter terminal the test sequence can be input into the computer which will then automatically adjust the ABMS to simulate any desired sequence of metabolic activities for time durations up to 15 hours. The computer also monitors the test procedures and provides test results printout.

Epitaxial heterojunctions have been prepared by melting the lower -melting-point semiconductor of the interface between two dijferent semiconductors. when the temperature is reduced, the melted material recrystallizes, having alloyed into the higher -melting-point semiconditctor. The electrical and elcctro-optical properties of such single-crystal heterojunctions between GaAs and Gash and between p-type InAs and n-type Gash are the subject of this paper. The forward current varies as exp (AV), where A is substantially independent of temperatuve. For Gds-Gash heterojunctions at temperatures above, 370°K, if the current-voltage relationship were to he expressed as exp (qV/nkT), then n would he less than unity. The injection luminescence associated with forward current is, for the most part, characteristic. of the lower bandgap semicondutctor. These results can he explained by carrier injection into the lower bandgap semiconductor by tunneling through a barrier at the interface. The photovoltaic effect measured for incident photons having energies in the range between the bandgaps of the two semiconductors is much smaller than that produced by higher-energy photon The smallness of this between -the-gap photovoltaic response can he explained by the low probability for penetration of the barrier by the carriers produced in the smaller -bandgap semiconductor. THE technique of interface alloying has been used to produce single-crystal junctions between dissimilar semiconductors.' Oriented wafers are placed on a carbon heater strip, Fig. 1. so that semiconductor S1, which has the lower melting point, is supported by semiconductor S2. Electrical current passed through the heater strip produces a temperature gradient such that S2 is at a higher temperature than S1. As the temperature is raised the lower face of S1 begins to melt. Before the entire wafer can melt, however, the heater-strip current is turned off and, as illustrated in Fig. l. the melted portion recrystallizes, having alloyed into S2. Junctions have been fabricated by the above procedure between GaAs and germanium, between GaAs and GaSb, and between InAs and GaSb. Mroczkowski, Lavine. and Gatos have described the metallurgical and chemical aspects of the GaAs-Ge junction.2 The transition from GaAs to germanium is not monotonic and a portion of the recrystallized region consists of the GaAs-Ge eutectic. Since gallium is an acceptor and arsenic is a donor in germanium, since germanium dopes GaAs, and since the electrical properties of the GaAs-Ge eutectic have not been investigated, any interpretation of the electrical characteristics in terms of simple heterojunction theory would be incorrect. That the rectification of GaAs-Ge heterojunctions is not a property of the impurity doping of the GaAs or the germanium, but is most probably due to the impurity distribution in the recrystallized region, is clear from the fact that forward conduction occurred for all the GaAs-Ge interface-alloy junctions (whether they be n-n,n-p. p-n. or p-p) when the germanium was biased positively. The electrical characteristics of these GaAs-Ge heterojunctions will not be discussed further in this paper. Electron-beam microprobe analysis of GaAs-GaSb heterojunctions showed that the transition from arsenic to antimony atoms was without structure. and that the transition occurred within a 2 to 3 region.' In this paper we will describe the electrical properties of the GaAs-GaSb heterojunctions as well as electrical and electro-optical properties of the InAs-GaSb heterojunctions. A band model for the junction will be proposed which can explain these properties. "The Mic Mac property comprises 994 acres held under mining concession and approximately 2,000 acres held under development licenses in Bousquet township, Abitibi county, western Quebec.Gold was first discovered in this locality by Tom Duval in June, 1936. In February, 1937, Cassels Duval Mines, Limited, was incorporated under Quebec charter to take over the property. In September, 1937, the property was examined by Agaura Explorations, Limited, and an option agreement was signed on October 6th, 1937. In June, 1938, an option for complete ownership was taken on adjoining claims belonging to Norgold Mines, Limited, and in September, 1938, a mining plant was installed and the sinking of a 3-compartment shaft begun. In June, 1939, an option was taken by Mic Mac Explorations, Limited, on seven claims of Mooshla Gold Mines Company, Limited, that adjoined the Norgold block to the east. In December, 1939, a new company, Mic Mac Mines, Limited, was formed, amalgamating the Cassels Duval, Norgold, and Mooshla claims, as well as two claim groups to the west of the mine known as the Vaughan and West Cassels groups."

Coal, as well as a large part of other minerals in Canada, is produced by surface mining methods. This has resulted in short and long-term accumulation of waste rock in dumps. Two main problems arise from the flow of water through these dumps: stability of dumps and the impact on stream flows. In recent years, a number of mines have started placing waste rock in valleys for general disposal or far constructing mine access road ways. All these have created challenges in the following areas: effective design of dumps and flow-through dams; stability monitoring of the structures; environmental impacts downstream by way of increased amount of fines in suspension, sedimentation, and toxic substances; and long-term status of flow and flood. Similar situations also exist in many civil engineering structures. This paper discusses the status of rock drains and the immediate and future research needs.

During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex., local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed, it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between the leach solutions and the copper-bearing ma.teria1 determines recovery. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers) and mathematical or laboratory model studies, but they have not proved completely satisfactory. The investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drillholes, which are subsurface techniques used in petroleum exploration and development for locating fluids and measuring porosity. A significant advantage of radiation logging is that, unlike other types of logging, measurements may be made in cased holes, since gamma rays and neutrons will penetrate steel and cement. Three techniques are currently used at Chino: Natural gamma ray logging; neutron-neutron, or moisture logging; and gamma-gamma, or bulk density logging.

Operator cabs on a front-end loader and a rotary rock drill were retrofitted with ceiling mounted heating1AC units and air filtration systems. Subsequently surface coal mine field studies were conducted to evaluate the respirable dust protection these retrofitted cab systems offer to the equipment operator. A significant 10: 1 respirable dust protection factor (ratio of outside to inside cab dust levels) was measured for the front-end loader cab with positive pressurization of the cab interior. Whereas an insignificant 3: 1 respirable dust protection factor was measured for the drill cab without positive pressurization of the cab interior. These results indicate that achieving positive interior cab pressurization with retrofitted cab filtration systems is a key element to their dust control effectiveness.

The metallurgical response of the Point Leamington deposit has been studied. Two series of bench tests were conducted and various ore samples and flotation products were examined using image analysis techniques. The majority of sphalerite and chalcopyrite grains in this texturally complex ore were found to be smaller than 10 micrometres. Copper recoveries were low with losses mainly as fine inclusions in pyrite. Sphalerite recoveries were somewhat better due to a generally coarser habit. Gold and silver recoveries were also low and only solid solution silver was identified in the ore. The deposit shows poor economic prospects unless additional tonnage of high grade zinc ore can be delineated.

A massive pillar collapse occurs when undersized pillars fail and rapidly shed their load to adjacent pillars which in turn fail. This chain reaction-like failure may involve hundreds, even thousands, of pillars and the consequences have been catastrophic. One effect of a massive pillar collapse can be a powerful, destructive, and a potentially hazardous airblast. On eleven recent occasions, massive pillar collapses have occurred in six southern West Virginia coal mines. Two other instances of massive pillar collapses in U.S. mines have been documented in the literature. Research was conducted at four mines where massive pillar collapses occurred. Geotechnical evaluations of roof rock, coalbed, and floor conditions were made. Evidence indicates that in each case a massive and competent roof rock unit was able to bridge a relatively wide span, creating a pressure arch. Eventually, the pressure arch apparently broke down, and the structural characteristics of the pillar system were such that sudden, massive pillar failures occurred. Data collected at the failure sites also indicates that all the massive collapses occurred where the pillars width-to-height ratio was 3.0 or less. Numerical modeling, performed with a modified version of the MULSIM/NL computer program, supports the conclusions that the extent of the mined-out area, the bridging capability of the main roof, and the width-to-height ratio of the pillars are probably all significant factors in the occurrence of massive pillar failures.

This paper describes a magazine security system using two readily available cellular telephone-based technologies. The system is comprised of vibration sensors and remote cameras. The system is used at a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) licensed explosives storage location in Pennsylvania to comply with PA Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) regulations. The system provides instant notification to the licensee via cellular modems, text messaging, phone call, and e-mail. Likewise, the licensee can control the system remotely over the internet and using text messaging commands. The vibration sensors attach to the door of the metal type I magazines magnetically and detect any movement or vibration. The cameras trigger on movement and thermal radiation changes and can also be triggered manually to check alarms received from the vibration sensors. The previous system was comprised of a base unit and magnetic strips. The magnetic strips were powered by a hard line from the control unit and mounted on the doors and top of magazine creating a bond, that when broken triggered an alarm. Our main issues with the unit were the delay in alert times and tech support. Because of these issues, we decided an upgrade was necessary. Compared to that previous system used at this site, these new systems are highly affordable, carefree and reliable.

"Products filling our societal needs, like communication and transportation needs, are becoming more sophisticated and efficient. The cost has been an increased complexity of material combinations. The same trend is also seen in investment goods. As an example, different crusher types have almost doubled the power to weight ratio in a relatively short time while producing even higher crushing rations. This has been possible by high performance materials and advanced designs. Another example is new hybrid materials in prefabricated high-strength steel structures in construction with the aim to lighten the products and obtain energy savings in the use phase e.g. in transportation. This development in general has made the end of life phase obscure. Recycling is often understood as the first phase of the material cycle. This has been supported by the material centric point of view. When, say indium, has been collected and mechanically treated to a concentrated fraction, it is assumed as recycled. This is not the case. The same applies to special steel alloys where one tends to lose some of the alloying elements to slag or even into the gas phase in the melting and refining stage, not in the earlier steps of recycling. At present there is no clear understanding of recycling of hybrid materials and no clear willingness to create new functional recycling systems. As the EU directives and most of legislation worldwide are based on the material centric thinking and implemented even on total mass recovery basis there is neither legislative incentive nor very strong economic incentives to work out the problem. In our research, we focus on industrial design towards sustainability from a product centric point of view from product collection to final metallurgical steps. It is vital, in the design phase of product, to understand the effects of decisions on recyclability to a saleable raw material. Main goal of our work is to create the fortunate circumstances in supply chain - to pass the barriers and find the effective and fruitful drivers - for reasonable use of raw materials and recycling co-operation with industry. The boundary conditions in the work are extractive metallurgical performance and the economic viability of all the steps. It can be shown from our work that small design alterations may have a large impact on the recyclability. The earlier the decisions are made in the product life chain the more positive impact they will have. It can also be shown, that a strong processing and metallurgical industry is vital to any meaningful recycling of the modern EoL products. Finally, it is also question of the individuals and values: supply and demand. Are you ready to take up the gauntlet: demand recyclable products."

Mechanisation of mining operations is not a new concept in the world of mining. Machinery has been developed, manufactured and used for many decades in massive orebodies and coal mines, both locally and abroad. Because of their size and the huge tonnages available, massive ore bodies lend themselves very easily to mechanisation. However, little progress in mechanisation has been made in narrow tabular orebodies in South Africa. The equipment available for narrow tabular orebodies requires excavations of a size that introduce large volumes of waste dilution. Nevertheless, it is essential for South African miners to experiment with mechanisation and to find a solution to the problem. This address looks at current conventional mining methods and compares them to bord-and-pillar type mining methods. Off-reef mechanisation is also touched on. It then looks at different hybridised mining methods that are being used, i.e. a mixture of conventional mining and mechanisation. It finally looks at future prospects for mechanisation in narrow tabular orebodies.

IN an effort to understand high cycle fatigue, as well as to study the mechanism of fracture in general, a number of researches have been undertaken whereby the fracture properties of a metal have been determined under conditions of repeated cyclic prestsain employing high strains with relatively few cycles. Liu, Lynch, Ripling, and Sachs' showed the effect of a definite strain history consisting of small increments of tensile or compressive prestrain upon the flow and fracture characteristics of metals after a limited number of repeated loadings. Liu and SachsW emonstrated by cyclic straining of the aluminum alloy 24s-T4 that the least reduction in ductility was obtained when the compressive stress was nearly equal to the tensile stress. Attempts have been made to correlate the reduction in ductility under such prestraining with conventional fatigue data, as was done by Liu and co-workers.' The following research was conducted to determine if such reduction as has been noted could be correlated with conventional fatigue data or whether the effect resulted from causes extraneous to the basic mechanism of fatigue failure such as strain aging. It might be pointed out in this connection that the reduction in ductility has occurred in alloys that might be susceptible to strain aging or similar behavior, such as alloy 24s-T4. In the present investigation, the test specimens were prepared from the aluminum alloy 75s-T6 and annealed electrolytic copper. Alloy 75s-T6 is a complex precipitation hardenable alloy, whereas electrolytic copper would not be expected to exhibit strain aging effects, particularly at room temperature. The experimental procedure consisted of prestraining test specimens repeatedly by increasing tension in small increments to various total prestrain values, followed by testing to failure in a tension test. The prestraining as well as the final testing was performed on a tensile machine using special fixtures9 0 maintain concentricity of the specimens. After prestraining, the specimens were unloaded as rapidly as possible and immediately reloaded so that the total time lapse between strains was held to a few seconds. Logarithmic or true natural strain was used in all calculations. The results are presented in Figs. 1 and 2.
