IT is generally accepted that no method of coal cleaning except froth flotation is effective in cleaning dust. In the majority of coals mined in the United States the dust sues contain a high percentage of impurities, hence the removal of the dust from the coarse sizes lowers the impurity content of these sizes. Dedusted coal is desired as a means of providing a better feed to cleaning plants because of increased efficiency in I both dry and wet plants. In dry-cleaning plants, a dedusted feed makes for a pervious and uniform bed. With a dusty feed the fines tend to segregate in the feed stream and pass en masse over the air separators, causing a lack of uniform aeration and fluidity of the bed necessary to efficient cleaning. In wet-cleaning plants dedusting of the feed often decreases the sludge problem to the point of eliminating the necessity of wasting wash water. It may be advantageous to eliminate sludge-settling equipment in favor of dedusting equipment, to provide the advantages of a dedusted feed to the wet-washing process. Dedusting advantages may include: (1) the removal of fusain, especially advantageous in plants washing coal intended for metallurgical coke; (2) prevention of the gradual build-up of solids in the wash water, with a consequent variation in the washing ability of the system; (3) prevention of the loss of dust to the sludge ponds, providing instead a fuel for local consumption or special markets. DEDUSTING The practice of dedusting, sometimes called aspirating, has presented a problem in disposing of the dust and intermediate small sizes recovered in the process. It has been found that no difficulty is experienced in disposing of the intermediate sizes, since they are free of fine dust and burn freely on grates built for small coal. They handle well, flowing freely from bins and hoppers and into conveyors, and pulverize easily. They have a low angle of repose. Technological developments, associated with the constant worry about the environmental impacts arising from industrial activity, it has driven the development of technologies and practices for efficient fumes and particulates capture arising from the manufacturing processes of steel in steel plants in general. Currently, the electric steelshops in operation with Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), seek parameterize/design dedusting systems able to retain most of the particulates generated during melting and refining of steel in FEA through configurations of equipment, technologies and parameters operation in order to equalize the antagonistic relationship between effective fumes capture and energy balance of the EAF. The present work gets as a fundamental premise to evaluate critically the possible different settings of the usual dust removal systems, as well as their respective classical parameterizations. The work main purpose is to establish a general rule evaluation technique for dedusting system considering the different modes of operation of an Electric Arc Furnace.

FOR the past seven years, all flotation at the Britannia mill has been done in Forrester Air-Lift cells. Prior to 1931, the roughing and part of the cleaning operation had been performed in four 21-cell and two 14-cell M.S. machines. The resulting economies in reagent, power, maintenance, and general operating costs, and the increased recovery, more than justified the exclusive use of the Forrester machine. About three years ago, the possibility of still further improving the efficiency of the flotation section was the subject of considerable discussion and experiment. Arising from these experiments, tests were made of the practicability of using a cell of greater depth than that of any pneumatic or mechanically-agitated machine in common use. Cells were constructed with depths of 7 .5 feet, 10 feet, and 15 feet, and, in all cases, a very definite improvement in operation was indicated. The cell now being used in the mill treats from 5,500 to 6,200 tons of dry feed per day. It is 100 ft. long by 5 ft. wide by 8 ft. deep, and has replaced a total length of over 500 feet of standard Forrester machine. The choice of a depth of 8 feet was governed by the type of blower which was available-in this case, a Roots-Connersville blower, driven by a synchronous motor and delivering 6,000 c.f.m. of free air at 4.0 pounds per square inch. At the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Company, where a new mill was recently built, all flotation is carried on in cells 10 feet deep, with good results.

Diaphragm walls (D-walls) are known as underground structural elements commonly used for retention systems and permanent foundation elements. In addition, they are also quite often used as deep groundwater barriers, called Cut-Off-Walls (COW). Shanghai ranks third among the most densely populated metropolises in the world. In 1990, only eight million people lived there. Today, Shanghai has about25 million inhabitants. The increasing demand to accommodate the infrastructure of growing megacities like Shanghai pushes the required depth for subway, sewage and foundation projects to the limit. Future projects will demand excavation depths of more than 100 m (328 ft) on a regular basis. Already carried out reference projects will be described and a general outlook for upcoming projects will be given. The paper also explains the installation process in general focusing on the use of trench cutter technology. INTRODUCTION D- walls are known as underground structural elements, commonly used as retention systems for excavation pits and shafts as well as permanent foundation walls or elements. It is anticipated that, with the increasing trend of utilizing more and more underground space to accommodate environmental considerations and urban/suburban development, there will be an increasing requirement for diaphragm wall usage in even more difficult conditions and with increasing depth. The trench cutter is the most important tool for performing this work. The hydraulic grab, a well-known and valuable excavation tool for d-walls reaches its limits in terms of depth and when cutting rock. Therefore the trench cutter technology will be in the focus of this paper. The trench cutter itself is a reverse circulation excavation tool. It consists of a heavy steel frame with two drive gears attached to its bottom end, which rotates in opposite direction around the horizontal axis. Cutter wheels are mounted onto the drive gears. As they rotate, the soil beneath the cutter wheels is continuously broken up, removed, mixed with the bentonite slurry in the trench and moved towards the opening of the suction box of the pump? A centrifugal pump located right above the cutter wheels conveys the slurry via a hose system up to a desanding plant. There the slurry loaded with soil and rock particles is cleaned and returned into the trench.

"The SR 83/US 331 highway is located in the Florida panhandle, where it connects the Walton County beaches to the I-10 corridor. The roadway is of vital importance to the economy of the area as well as its safety since it represents the primary hurricane evacuation route from southern Walton County. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) decided to increase the number of traffic lanes from two to four and improve the geotechnical properties of the moderately deep, very loose foundation soils, that had affected the highway rideability for years. The soil mixing was selected as the method to meet the unique deep ground improvement challenges of the project. The design required that Shallow Mixing Method (SMM) be used to build a 10-foot thick platform that transferred axial load to the bottom soil layers through a series of Deep Mixing Method (DMM) columns. Upon completion over 8,300 SMM columns and 1,500 DMM columns had been installed, with no remedial work required. Also, only 1% of the almost 1,500 specimens tested did not meet the specification requirements. This paper will describe the challenges encountered and provide valuable information that may be useful for other future projects, including details not previously published.INTRODUCTIONThe counties of Walton and Okaloosa have been a very popular vacation destination for many ears. The 50-mile long coastline boasts beautiful, sugar-white beaches and waters the color of emeralds. The popularity of the area has been growing even further, over the last few years. A consequence of this phenomenon is a fast-paced increase of the traffic flow on the SR83/US331 highway, especially at the bridge that connects the Walton County beaches across Choctawhatchee Bay (Fig. 1) to the heavily traveled I-10 corridor. The highway plays a very important role for the area also as a commercial link and as the primary hurricane evacuation route from southern Walton County. The increase in traffic has produced higher travel time, when not a complete traffic paralysis, and exacerbated the issue of ground settlement where accelerated wearing of road foundation occurred due to the presence of very loose, moderately deep, soils, that had afflicted the highway for several years. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) decided to put an end to these issues by increasing the number of traffic lanes from two to four and improving the geotechnical properties of the foundation soils. The Design-Build Maximum Price Request for Proposal (RFP) issued for the expansion of the Choctawhatchee Bay Bridge saw the participation of numerous D/B teams which produced various technical solutions. Among them, the FDOT selected the Skanska/Parsons Brinckerhoff (General Contractor) proposal which provided for the use of soil mixing as the ground improvement technology. The design/build team assigned Foundation & Geotechnical Engineering (Designer of Record) the ground improvement design which Treviicos South (Specialty Contractor) would execute."

Prior to 2001 Yallourn Mine has pumped approximately 1000 Megalitres of water per annum from aquifers beneath the mine floor in order to control aquifer pressures that were thought to have an influence on mine floor and permanent batter stability. In 2001 one of the deep aquifer pumps was shut down for five months in order to measure the aquifer recoveries. Prior to the shutdown a UDEC model was created in order to predict what level of recovery in the aquifer pressures would be critical to mine stability. The shutdown showed that the aquifer levels recovered and stabilised at levels that did not threaten the stability of the mine. The aquifers recovered to levels below the critical levels identified in the UDEC model.

A number of concepts for basing strategic missiles facilities deep underground have been developed within the defense industry. Recently, several contracts were let by the Air Force Ballistic Missile Organization to better develop system concepts for Deep Basing and Rapid Egress of Missiles from these facilities. A particular challenge of the Deep Basing Concept is the need for the excavation of egress tunnels or shaft from the deeply based facility to the ground surface, in a rapid and reliable manner. This Paper describes a conceptual MX-Deep Basing Facility, the technical issues associated with its design and construction, and potential means for achieving rapid egress from this facility. "This paper summarizes the Wren CAT (Clarifier and Accelerated Thickener) deep bed thickener operation at the EKATITM Diamond Mine in Canada’s Northwest Territories. EKATITMs’ thickener project is presented in terms of initial design considerations and present day operating practices. A circuit description summarizes process equipment, reagent systems, and typical process conditions, and details of Wren CAT operating principles are provided. Operating strategies are discussed, with emphasis on process instrumentation and control and operating challenges.INTRODUCTIONThe EKATITM diamond mine, operated by BHP Diamonds, Inc., is located in the Northwest Territories near Lac De Gras, approximately 300 km NNE of Yellowknife, NT. 9000 dry metric tonnes of diamond-bearing kimberlite ore are processed daily. Processing operations commenced in October, 1998.The EKATITM process plant flowsheet features typical steps in diamond recovery plant design. Figure 1 shows the general plant flowsheet. Size reduction and feed preparation are accomplished by crushing, scrubbing, and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) through closed-circuit classification with vibratory screens. Heavy medium separation (HMS) is used as the initial stage of heavy mineral concentration. Secondary concentration is accomplished in the recovery plant by attrition milling; wet, high-intensity magnetic separation (both wet and dry); and X-ray sorting.The present budget throughput rate is 9000 dry tonnes per day. This will be increased to 18,000 tonnes during the first ten years of operation. Unlike most kimberlite treatment facilities, which process material from a single ore body, EKATITM’s process plant was designed to accommodate ore from five different kimberlite pipes, each with its own treatment characteristics.All processing, except for primary crushing, is carried out in a temperature-controlled environment in the main process plant building."

"AbstractThe construction of a distribution centre of minerals for a global mining and resources cooperation demanded the control of deformations and displacement of the stack reclaimer facilities on very inhomogeneous subsoil conditions. The variation of quality from soft clay with CPT values below 1 MPa up to rock formations were the challenge in design and execution of all the foundation works.The advanced design considerations were resulting in a barrier wall system to limit the deformations of the up to 40 m deep bored pile of the stacker-reclaimers, whereas the layout of the barrier wall and the stiffness of the elements had a major impact on the residual lateral forces to be absorbed by the bearing structure.IntroductionA large international raw material distribution organisation is currently building an iron ore and pellet distribution centre on the north-western coast of Malaysia. The distribution centre will handle around 90 MTPA (million tons per annum) of iron ore and includes accompanying plants for loading and unloading iron ore and pellets, pelletizing plants as well as corresponding storage space for these raw materials. The total storage space extends about 800m north to south respectively 1400m east to west and is about 200m from the coastline. The project area is located in a wide valley basin, bounded by a range of hills to the north. The existence of soil with low bearing capability in the area designated for the plant meant that measurements for ground improvement were required in the storage areas, in order to combine the needs of iron ore and pellet storage areas with requirements of the loading facilities as the overall project demand.Project LayoutThe iron ore distribution centre and the pelletizing facility both consist of an import/export jetty, material handling facilities, pellet plant and the associated infrastructure. This publication describes the execution of ground improvement and foundation works for the loading and storage system, which consists of five rows of stockpiles and four intermediate rows of stacker-reclaimers. The total area of these systems comprises 278,881 m2 (Fig. 1)."

With the increasing awareness of the need for the reduction of carbon emissions globally, geothermal energy, which offers a potential for cleaner energy generation, is one potential new source. In Alberta, these geothermal resources are likely to be found in the sedimentary basin, or in the deeper crystalline basement rocks. Alberta exhibits a very low geothermal gradient compared to other existing geothermal fields located in areas of volcanic and tectonic activity. To mitigate this effect, the focus in Alberta will involve the development of engineered geothermal systems (EGS) in the target resource. The first goal for EGS research and development is to develop a detailed geological-geophysical characterization of selected sites to delineate potential geothermal reservoirs in Northern Alberta. One of the selected sites is in the Fort McMurray area. The deepest well drilled in the oilsands areas of Northern Alberta is located just west of Fort McMurray. It has a depth of 2363 m and as such can provide details on the physical properties of the rocks, the state of stress, and the existence of fracture porosity toward geothermal investigations. To date, we have acquired temperature logs to study the change in geothermal gradient with depth, and a series of petrophysical logs to study the finer scale structure of the rock formations with vertical resolutions in the range of 0.05 cm to 80 cm. Our aim is to identify geological features such as zones of fractures in the basin and/or basement that could provide an indication of enhanced fluid flow potential ? a necessary component for any geothermal systems to be viable. Zero offset and walkaway vertical seismic profiles (VSP) were also conducted to measure the seismic responses at the borehole. VSP data can be used to delineate the structural and stratigraphic features surrounding the borehole that could not be resolved from surface seismic reflection data that are also available near the borehole. The full integration of well logs, VSP data and surface seismic reflection data are expected to provide a detailed characterization of the sedimentary basin and crystalline basement rocks of the Canadian Shield in Northeastern Alberta and will assist in future planning for drilling.

This paper discusses the application of deep CFA piles for the foundation of structures in different ground stratifications with a focus on the application in Queensland region. Design, construction techniques and quality measures implemented during these procedures are described. Testing methods and verification of capacity, integrity and performance of these piles are also demonstrated. Case studies for this application are presented with an appreciation of this solution within the provided project conditions of each case. Examples of successes and challenges encountered over the course of application of deep CFA in Queensland are mentioned. Limitations of the technique and less favourable situations for its implementation are also highlighted.

One of the deepest coal operations today is the Springhill No. 2 mine of Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., subsidiary of Dominion Coal Co. Ltd. Mining is now conducted at a slope distance of 14,000 ft, with 4400 vertical ft of cover. The record of Springhill No. 2 can be said to contain the history of bumps in the Province of Nova Scotia. The Springhill coal field forms part of the Cumberland field of Carboniferous age. There are seven mineable fields in the area, numbered in the order they were discovered. Mining has been carried on in all but the No. 4 and 5 seams, but present operations are confined to the No. 2. Fig. 1 shows a vertical section through the seams.

In Xian, China, compaction by means of soil (or lime-soil) piles is one of the effective methods widely used for densifying loess and eliminating its collapsibility. However, as a result of groundwater table rising, it is no longer applicable in many areas. This paper is the summary of the first-time use in Xian of sand-gravel compaction piles aimed at densifying the miscellaneous fill (already partially under water) and saturated loess at a certain project site. In-situ tests, conducted before and after the treatment and including several kinds of penetration tests backed up and confirmed by a set of plate loading tests, yielded very satisfactory results, strongly testifying to the viability of the method.

The need for deep compaction of submerged granular soils has led to improvements in this area. In 1971, L.B. Foster Company personnel patented a method of deep compaction using a vibratory pile hammer and pile probe. The technique had some success, but did not produce consistent results and thus found its way to obscurity. Other patents attempted to modify the technique by various probe modifications, but again without measurable improvement from a practical point of view. Solutions to economical deep compaction up to 100 foot depths particularly in saturated granular soils would have a great impact on the construction industry and new bulkhead structures being developed, thus PND was prompted into related research and development. The advent of higher horsepower vibratory hammers, coupled with PND engineers? experiments, observations and measurements, led to an ?H? pile probe design which has produced measured soil density improvements up to 250% using SPT ?N60? values as a measure.

"How well do current modeling procedures calculate the rear abutment extent and loading? Does an improved understanding of the rear abutment extent warrant a change in standing support in bleeder entries? What is the optimal standing support for bleeder entries separated from the longwall startup room by a barrier pillar? To help answer these questions and to determine the current utilization of standing support in bleeder entries, four bleeder entries at varying distances from the startup room were instrumented, observed, and numerically modeled. This evaluation was intended to determine the rear abutment extent and magnitude at various locations to optimize standing support in these entries and those under similar conditions. This paper details observations made by NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries of a deep cover longwall panel; specifically data collected from instrumented pumpable cribs, observations of the conditions of the entries, and numerical modeling of the bleeder entries during longwall extraction. The primary focus was on the extent and magnitude of the abutment loading experienced by the standing support. As expected, the instrumentation of the standing supports showed very little loading relative to the capacity of the standing supports—less than 25 tons load and 1 inch convergence. The observations of the conditions showed little to no change from before the longwall panel extraction began to when the panel was more than 50% extracted. In addition to the observation and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to evaluate the bleeder design. The Flac3D program was used to evaluate these four bleeder entries using previously defined modeling and input parameter estimation procedures. The results indicated only a minor increase in load during the extraction of the longwall panel. The model showed a much greater increase in stress due to the development of the gateroad and bleeder entries, with about 80% of the increase associated with development and 20% with longwall extraction. The Flac3D model showed very good correlation between expected gateroad loading during panel extraction and those expected based on previous studies. The front and side abutment extent modeled was very similar to observations from this and previous panels with similar conditions. The results of this study showed that the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The convergence measured in these bleeder entries was small enough not to mandate any additional support beyond development even by U.S. or Australian standards. The pumpable crib load and convergence experienced depends on the geological setting, mining geometries, and timing. The farther away from the startup room, the lower the applied load and smaller the convergence in the entry if all else is held constant. Finally, the numerical modeling method used in this study was capable of replicating the expected and measured results near seam."

Deep cover retreat mining (overburden in excess of 750 ft) is an important emerging issue which will intensify in the future as the more easily mined shallow seam reserves are depleted. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics indicates that deep cover pillar recovery accounts for a disproportionate share of the underground coal mine roof/rib fall fatalities and injuries. Past research has shown that previously recommended Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) stability factors (SF’s) may be excessive for deep cover pillar design. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the various methods and strategies by which panels, production pillars and barrier pillars are developed and extracted under deep cover, and to develop appropriate design guidelines. In the course of the research, 29 mines in 7 states were investigated to collect panel design case histories. At each mine site, underground geotechnical data were collected on the pillar line in order to document roof rock, coalbed and floor conditions. The analyses indicated that squeezes were the most likely failure mode where the depth was less than 1,250 ft, but bumps predominated in the deeper cover cases. Immediate roof rock quality, the ARMPS SF’s, and barrier pillar stability factors were all found to be important parameters in determining the outcomes of the case histories. Design guidelines, including suggestions for barrier pillars to isolate active panels from nearby gobs in bump prone ground, are also proposed.

In the wake of the Crandall Canyon mine disaster, the U.S. Congress asked the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) to study the safety of deep cover pillar recovery operations in the US. The legislation defined ?deep cover? to be greater than 1,500 ft, but NIOSH is also evaluating mines at depths greater than 1,000 ft when multiple seam interactions are encountered. By these definitions, there about 35 active mines that engage in deep cover pillar recovery, in the states of UT, CO, VA, WV, and KY. To date, NIOSH has documented ground conditions and ground control experience at nearly all of them. This paper provides an overview of current deep cover pillar recovery practice.
