Longwalls using shearers in seam heights of less than 1.2 m (48 inches) are relatively rare in the U.S. Westmoreland Coal Company is currently operating a shearer-equipped longwall at a cutting height of 1.17 m (46 inches) in its Bullitt Mine. This face has averaged 2795 metric tons/day of operation since its startup on April 3, 1984. Longwall productivity in thin seams is substantially impacted by equipment reliability and availability of useable working room for travel and access. This paper addresses the design criteria used in selecting this face equipment, with the goal of maximizing these two parameters. Equipment discussed includes shearers. face conveyor, shields, stageloader, and emulsion system.

A fluidized countercurrent ion-exchange system was developed, operated, and evaluated by the Bureau of Mines. The system consisted of integrated multiple-compartment absorption and elution columns in which the solution flows are continuous except for short periods when resin increments are withdrawn. The exchange of uranyl sulfate between a simulated acid leach uranium solution and a strong-base, ion-exchange resin together with the subsequent elution with an acidified sodium chloride solution was studied. The effects of the number of sections, section heights, amount of resin withdrawal, and solution flow rates were investigated. Also examined were the kinetic and equilibrium relationships for the absorption step. The experimental data indicate a strong interdependence between variables. Solution retention time appears to be a major limiting variable. The column was efficient over a range of conditions, but close control was needed for optimum operation.

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. INTRODUCTION The design criteria for a particular concentration and dewatering project will provide the formal basis for design of the process, equipment and facilities. These criteria will specify the required capacities and operating schedules for the equipment, as well as the quantity and quality of the feed to be processed and products obtained. The general climatic and geographical conditions at the site, specific information on soil or rock conditions; and applicable design standards and codes will also be included. The design criteria will generally be based on an interpretation of testwork carried out on the particular ore and site, and will thus parallel in detail and completeness this testwork. As the project moves from the early conceptual phases through to final detailed design, the design criteria will be developed and become more detailed as information is generated and made available for use. The design criteria are critical to the design effort as the formal specification to the designer of what and how much is to be processed, what and how much is to be produced, and where and under what conditions. The actual design criteria will be a formal tabulation of the design basis information developed for the project in question. For a preliminary study, this may consist of a single page of data; for a feasibility study several pages and for a detailed design up to several hundred pages and multiple volumes. Depending on the complexity of the process and the level of detail included, each project will be unique to some degree. The design process for a project normally progresses from preliminary conceptual phases through to a final detailed design. The criteria used for the initial concepts are generally developed from rough data and preliminary testwork on the ore in question. Regardless, the plant throughput and products are defined, thus giving a scope and definition to the study phase. In some studies a range of throughputs may be analyzed in order to arrive at the most economically attractive size for the proposed operation. This optimum size is then used as the design throughput for the more detailed design phases. Similarly as more testwork results are available and the ore characteristics and process become more well defined a continuous updating of the design criteria is undertaken.

This paper presents design considerations for the major underground elements of the pending BCRUA Phase 2 Raw Water Delivery System Project. These elements include two Lake Taps; an 8,800 LF, minimum 10-ft OD intake tunnel; a suction chamber with 6 Pump Shafts; a 30-ft diameter, 300-ft deep Main Shaft; a 2,600 LF Transmission Tunnel with 78-inch steel liner; and a 130-ft deep shaft on the Transmission Tunnel. The tunnels and shafts will be excavated through the Glen Rose limestone. The design development included consideration for technical requirements, easements, third party commitments, previous local project experience, and constructability based on contractor outreach.

The I-35 Capital Expressway (CapEx) Central Drainage Tunnels will serve as a stormwater collection system for the forthcoming I-35 Capital Express Central reconstruction project through downtown Austin, Texas. The schematic level concept design included three tunnels, 10 to 14 ft ID, totaling 26,000 LF. Constructability reviews during design development indicated issues with the concept design including phasing of construction, conicts with future retaining walls, staging area concerns, and signicant mixed face tunneling. The design was updated to mitigate these risks. The revised design includes two tunnels, both 22-ft ID and totaling 33,000 LF, that will be mined almost entirely in rock.

"The paper presents dimensionless design diagrams for estimating the stand-up time of a tunnel face in saturated ground of medium-low permeability. The diagrams cover a wide range of ground parameters and apply to shallow tunnels (overburden less than two diameters). As the time-dependency of the face stability in water-bearing ground is associated with the consolidation process in the soil ahead of the tunnel face, the stand-up time is determined by means of hydraulic-mechanical coupled spatial stress analyses. The results presented are important for tunnel engineering practice, e.g. when estimating the feasibility of atmospheric interventions in the working chamber of a closed shield. INTRODUCTION The response of water-bearing medium-low permeability ground to tunnel excavation is time dependent. The time-dependency is due to a transient seepage flow process that is triggered by the excavation and develops slowly over the course of time. Experience shows that the short-term behavior the ground is more favorable than the long-term one: the deformations increase with time; the tunnel face may be stable initially and fail only after some time. The time over which the tunnel face remains stable is called the stand-up time. This paper investigates the time dependency of the tunnel face stability assuming that all time effects are due to consolidation rather than creep. This assumption is reasonable for shallow tunnels crossing water-bearing soils. In the problem under analysis, the unsupported tunnel face remains stable under the undrained conditions prevailing after excavation, but collapses before reaching the drained conditions prevailing at a steady state. The assessment of the stand-up time is important from an economical point of view for both mechanized and conventional tunneling through weak water-bearing ground, as a long stand-up time removes the need for face support or ground improvement works during standstills, thus saving time and money, while short stand-up times require hyperbaric interventions or the implementation of costly and time-consuming auxiliary measures."

The world-famous Sang Dong Mine in the Republic of Korea has long been one of the world's greatest tungsten ore deposits. Over the years, the development of the Sang Dong deposit has steadily increased to a point where it now exerts a great influence on the world tungsten market. The mine is located in the mountains of the province of Kang Won Do, approximately 150 miles by road due east of Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea. In recent years the transportation system in Korea has greatly improved and the mine is now serviced by an excellent secondary type road from the new railroad line which is 20 miles away. The Sang Dong operation is made up of the underground mining, beneficiation mill, chemical refinery, tungsten metal plant, bismuth refinery, acid plant, foundry and machine shops. The bismuthinite production from the Sang Dong Mine is also of considerable importance, The output accounts for nearly 10 per cent of the world production of bismuth. A small amount of molybdenite concentrate is also recovered from the flotation operation.

The San Vicente Pipeline project involves the construction of an 8-1/2 foot diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile long tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel will be excavated in extremely variable geologic conditions consisting of strong granitic and metamorphic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. This paper discusses the challenging geologic conditions and some of the key design evaluations for the project. Currently design work for the project has been completed and construction will be underway by mid-2005.

During the late 1960s the mining industry became interested in USBM's efforts to develop the gold-silver heap leaching process. In the last 10 years, successful commercial heap leaching applications increased. The process provides a relatively low-capital means of processing treatable ores with reasonable operating costs. Present gold and silver prices compared to capital and operating costs favor the continued growth of the heap leaching method. The heap leaching process is defined as the percolation leaching of relatively coarse gold-silver ore piled on an impervious surface. To date, dilute alkaline cyanide solution is the lixiviant of choice. Other leaching reagents such as thiourea and hypo have been suggested, although they are not currently used in heap leaching practice. Ores may he run-of-mine in size or crushed as fine as about 10 mm. Gold and silver-bearing so¬lutions draining from the heaps may be processed in activated carbon columns to recover the metals, followed by stripping and metal recovery, or treated by the Merrill-Crowe zinc dust precipitation method. All solutions are generally recycled to the leaching step, and the heap leaching system is relatively easy to control from an environmental viewpoint. One advantage of the heap leaching process is its flexibility. Plants may be very simple, comprising leaching of uncrushed ore on a locally-obtained clay-lined pad and shipment of gold and silver recovered in the form of loaded carbon or zinc precipitates; such a plant would have a relatively low capital investment. More elaborate plants for larger ore bodies may be planned to include crushing, cyclic pad use, and done gold-silver recovery. General planning is similar in each case. This article outlines some key factors in designing heap leaching operations and discusses how these factors are applied to develop a working operation. Since individual design requirements and local costs vary so much, only a few general comments on costs are included.

Research on roof bolting has developed significant information with respect to the functions that can be performed by properly installed bolts and the methods that can be used to ensure that effective installation has been achieved. The present paper brings together results that are pertinent to the design of a bolting system for reinforcing horizontally stratified mine roof with vertical bolts. The design approach is based on the use of bolts to decrease the maximum bending stress within an arbitrary sequence of roof strata (such as shown by figure 1) in which the only loads are the weights of the individual beds. The use of rock bolts to achieve other objectives, such as to stabilize a fractured rock mass on the periphery of a mine opening (3), is excluded from consideration herein.

Design for economical operation, minimum operating labor and minimum maintenance for labor and supplies are virtually inseparable. Each consideration has a vital bearing on the other. Let us assume that we have the design complete for the most economical operation with a minimum of operating personnel. This means, in addition, that we have the fewest number of operating units consistent with the product requirements for a team or metallurgical coal which we are called on to produce. l, INTRODUCTION Uranium mine and mill workers are exposed to external gamma and beta radiation fields from radioactive ore. In the past the average uranium content of ores mined in the United States and Canada ranged from about 0.1% to 1.0% U308 with pockets of much higher grade ore. Holiday (1973) reported that radiation surveys in the U.S. uranium mines found mean gamma "radiation rates ranged from 0.20 to 0.70 mrem/h. Such radiation rates cause relatively insignificant exposures." Others also concluded that the external gamma radiation fields associated with uranium mining did not result in significant worker exposures (Federal Radiation Council, 1967; Simpson, S.D. [et al], 1959) Gamma exposure levels in most modern-day Canadian uranium mines are reported to be low with average annual exposures estimated to be less than 1 rem/a (Frost, S.E. [et al], 1981). However, two developments are taking place which affect the potential significance of external radiation fields in the uranium mining environment. The first development stems from the most recent system of dose limitation developed by the ICRP which is intended to limit the workers' overall risk from exposure to ionizing radiation through the adoption of a sum rule (ICRP 26, 1977) which combines external and internal radiation exposures. In the case of exposure to radon daughters the sum rule will have the effect of reducing the annual exposure limit below the recommended limit by an amount that depends on external radiation and other sources of internal exposure such as the inhalation of ore dust (ICRP 1980). The Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (AECB) is reviewing this subject and is expected to produce its recommendations shortly. Irrespective of the form of the sum rule eventually adopted by the AECB, it is clear that the net effect of the sum rule will be a collective reduction of the individual dose limits for individual exposure pathways. The second factor is the increasing development of high grade uranium deposits in Northern Saskatchewan. Some of these ore bodies have an average ore grade of 1% to 5% U308 or greater. Since the potential external radiation fields increase in proportion to the ore grade, it is apparent that increased effort in radiation protection planning is required in order to develop safe yet workable methods for mining and milling such ores. This paper is intended to provide information which can be of assistance in the formulation and development of a mining and milling plan. The principal focus of the paper is source identification and the design of radiation protection measures to limit external gamma radiation exposure. The exposure of workers to external beta radiation fields is also discussed. The paper is organized as follows: - Section 2 deals with source characterization. - Section 3 discusses the effects of finite source size and distance (i.e. geometry effects). - Section 4 presents selected data that are useful in evaluating shielding requirements. - Section 5 discusses the potential beta radiation fields. - Section 6 discusses practical data requirements for worker exposure scenarios. - Section 7 presents a variety of work exposure calculations. - Section 8 is a summary of this paper. 2. SOURCE CHARACTERIZATION This section develops the basic formulae for estimating the fluxes and doses from external gamma radiation. The calculation of the radiation flux due to a distributed source (i.e. a linear, area or volume source) as a function of distance assumes that any distributed source can be treated as a summation of point sources. [ ] Uranium ore contains radionuclides from both the decay chains of U-238 and U-235. In this paper the radioactive daughters are assumed to be in secular equilibrium with the uranium parent. (If natural thorium were present in the ore in significant quantities, the gamma rays originating from Th-232 would have to be added to the gamma rays from the uranium series). In all, there are over 50 separate gamma rays (as well as alpha and beta particles) emitted from the U-238 and U-235 radioactive decay series (USHEW 1970). The total

"The Bypass Tunnel has high head conditions ranging from a minimum of 600 feet (183 m) under the Hudson River to a maximum of 875 feet (267 m) on the west side. The ground cover ranges from 425 feet to 900 feet (130 to 274 m). A two-pass lining is designed for the Bypass Tunnel. The bolted, gasketed precast segments carry the temporary hydrostatic and permanent ground loads. After the tunnel is put into service, the design assumes that the final lining, which varies from reinforced concrete to reinforced concrete with steel interliner, will carry the permanent hydrostatic loads. The design head for the segments is assumed at 775 feet (236 m), and the internal operating pressure head is around 1,200 feet (366 m). This paper discusses the design hydrostatic head and different load conditions considered for the segments, the load sharing between the segments and final lining, and the means employed to control water and hydrostatic pressure. PROJECT BACKGROUND The Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT), a segment of the Delaware Aqueduct, was built from 1937 to 1944 and provides about 50% of New York City’s total water supply. Monitoring and tunnel operations have shown that the RWBT is leaking up to 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million L/day). In particular, two locations have been identified as areas of concern: Roseton and Wawarsing, as shown in Figure 1. The Wawarsing reach of the aqueduct will be repaired with an extensive grouting program when the RWBT is unwatered. However, because of the extensive nature of the leakage in the Roseton area, a Bypass Tunnel will be constructed to divert the flow around this area."

The Cross City Tunnel comprises 2km of a new underground traffic route in Sydney, Australia. The route is very complex, involving some six separate tunnels and three underground Y-junctions. For almost 200m the six tunnels run parallel at different level sunder William Street, Sydney. Almost all of the route runs adjacent to the City Business District of Sydney and adjacent to or below many major buildings and services. The planning and design of this project is described. The geometric arrangement is achieved with a strong dependence on 3D road design packages. Road alignment constraints include land acquisition and proximity to existing tunnels and basements as well as maintaining separation from the other tunnels in the scheme. Geotechnical and hydrogeological studies are described. Findings discussed include the high horizontal stress field in the Sydney area and investigation of incised palaeochannels on the route. Methods of design for the tunnels and Y-junctions are described, as well as methods of settlement prediction for the buildings and services. The latter includes the settlement assessment for more than 200 buildings, many in excess of 20 storeys, as well as services including all of the city railway lines in Sydney.

The Northside Storage Tunnel Project in Sydney includes over 20 km of TBM driven tunnels, over three km of declines and major caverns and pump rooms. The paper describes methods used for design on the project. Emphasis is given to the refinement of the use of empirical rock mass classifications, and to the use of discontinuum numerical methods. The use of empirical rock mass classifications in Sydney sandstone has usually led to conservative design because the systems are based on a random orientation of joints in the rockmass. Because the joint sets are usually oriented in a way that is beneficial for tunnelling, limits must be placed on the parameters used in the classifications system. The paper discusses these limits and the derivation of the parameters. The use of numerical methods in Sydney sandstone is discussed. Continuum methods have their uses, but discontinuum methods are preferred. The use of UDEC has been validated against a previous project, the New Southern Railway. Recommendations are given for UDEC models. In Sydney's geology, so advantageous for tunnelling, the challenges of this project have been to make the best use of the good conditions, while maintaining safety for the workforce and the future operators of the project.

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of technical literature dealing with water sprays for dust control. However, guidelines for the design of an effective water spray system have not been presented to the mining industry. This paper recommends guidelines for water spray systems to control dust in underground mining operations. These guidelines suggest type, number, location, and orientation of nozzles; desirable operating water pressure; and associated filtration system.

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate data on weak rock masses into existing design relationships, with an emphasis on updating the span design curve for manned entries and the overbreak curve for longhole entries. Both curves were originally developed at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. The original database has been augmented by information from mines throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. The common factor in all these mines is the presence of a weak back and/or walls. In most cases, the ore zone is the weakest rock unit and must be stabilized so that the mineral-bearing rock can be extracted safety. The current NIOSH research attempts to provide rock mechanics tools to assist a mine operator in making economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment. This paper documents the Nevada database with a special emphasis on Nevada underground gold mines.
