Since the introduction of mechanical mining, some 35 years ago, a great deal of effort has been expended by the coal industry to solve the coal dust problem. The original concern was the possibility of a dust explosion or the propagation of a gas ignition; however, in recent years it has come to be recognized as a possible 'health hazard as well. In the middle thirties, the Pittsburgh Coal Company began an intensive study of the dust problem to determine the dust levels created by the various cycles of operation in mechanical mining and to make a comparison with those of hand loading operations. Numerous dust samples were collected with a midget impinger and it was found that dust counts varied from 38 to 268 million particles per cubic foot during hand loading and from 96 to 227 million particles per cubic foot during mechanical loading. The study indicated that the source of underground dust in coal mining could be classified as primary or secondary. A primary source is one associated with appreciable degradation of size, that is, where most of the fines capable of becoming air-borne are produced. A secondary source is one in which most of the fines have been produced at some previous operation and are in such condition that they can become air-borne. Cutting, drilling and blasting are the operations which produce the primary dust. Secondary dust is formed by operations which include; loading, transportation and discharge at transfer points. The study showed clearly that the coal cutting operation was responsible for the greatest amount of dust and that the amount of dust produced varied directly with the speed of cutting; type and dullness of cutting bits; and the distance the cuttings had to fall to the floor. The information obtained from the study enabled our company to decide on a course of action and the direction to follow. With the cooperation of mining machine manufacturers, water tanks with a 200 gallon capacity were built into the machine trucks and were provided with a pump driven by a small motor. A length of 1/2" water hose carried the water from the pump to the two water spray nozzles located at the front of the machine. Water was delivered to the machine tanks by water cars which were filled on the surface or from an underground water supply. It was during these early days that wetting agents were introduced into the water system. Our studies revealed that wetting agents did little better than plain water in the abatement of the dust problem. It was found that when using a wetting agent less water was required to obtain the same results but we could not take advantage of this fact because it was almost impossible to keep the smaller nozzles open to reduce the amount of water being used.

INTRODUCTION The use of precast concrete tunnel liners as the initial and final tunnel lining for transit systems has been a major consideration of designers for over three decades. The obvious benefit of building a tunnel that requires only a single pass in constructing the structural lining can provide the opportunity of saving both time and cost. This technique has had worldwide application in transit systems in London, Munich, Hong Kong, Toronto to name a few. In the United States precast liners were evaluated for use on the BART System in San Francisco in the early 1960's but did not provide sufficient confidence in the sealing capabilities available at that time. In 1976 it was decided to call for bids on the Lexington Market Tunnels in Baltimore with a precast concrete liner alternative for one of the tunnel drives. This option was selected by the owner and UMTA to provide a study evaluation for the benefit of the industry. HISTORY In 1983 Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority began calling for a series of bids on soft ground tunnels on the Green Line, which included the option of using precast concrete tunnel liners first as an alternative to fabricated steel tunnel liners. INTRODUCTION The simplest way to drill a hole into rock is to strike a steel chisel or drill bit with a hammer. Early miners used this elementary hand technique so successfully in "single jacking" and "double jacking" that the first mechanical rock-drill designers sought to duplicate it. However, in the early developments, the designers were forced to retreat to a construction known as the "piston drill," wherein the entire drilling element is tied to the piston and reciprocates with it. It took nearly 50 years to devise a method of divorcing the two elements and to achieve the original hammer principle used in hand drilling. The Mont Cenis tunnel, drilled through the French Alps in 1861, usually is considered the birthplace of the mechanical rock drill. The Hoosac tunnel in Massa¬chusetts was drilled at about the same time, and the success of these two ventures paved the way for innova¬tions that produced the Burleigh, Ingersoll, Sergeant, and Waugh piston drills between 1870 and the turn of the century. In 1897, George Leyner of Colorado introduced what has been considered the most significant development in rock-drill history. He devised the hollow drill steel for water flushing; when combined with his free-piston hammer drill, this became the first lightweight and dust¬free underground machine. In addition, Leyner's drills introduced improvements such as automatic rifle-bar rotation of the drill steel and chuck, automatic lubrica¬tion, and an enclosed throttle control. During the 1920s and 1930s, automatic feeds, centralizers, sliding cones, and the automatic water back head were developed, laying the groundwork for all pneumatic underground drills currently in use. Since these pioneering efforts, rock-drill development has been concerned primarily with refining the designs and improving the metallurgy to make faster, lighter, and more dependable machines. Fig. 1 illustrates the progress in drilling speed during the first 125 years of rock-drill development; that progress is a credit to the persistence and inventiveness of the designers in the rock-drilling industry. ROCK-DRILL CLASSIFICATIONS To meet the variety of conditions encountered in rock drilling, several distinct types of drills have been de¬veloped. In general, rock drills may be classified as either hand-held or mounted, with the hand-held ma¬chines including the jackhammer or sinker, the jackdrill or jackleg, and the stoper. The mounted drills are com¬monly known as "drifters." Table 1 shows that each type of drill is available in several sizes from different manufacturers. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical rock drill, showing the principal components. The jackhammer or sinker, shown in Fig. 3, is used primarily for general mine utility work such as drilling anchor holes (short vertical holes to bolt or anchor machinery), pin holes (short, usually horizontal holes to fasten sheaves, etc. to side walls), popholes (for blasting large boulders), and similar applications. They also are used for shaft sinking. Jackhammers are classified ac¬cording to weight, and they range from 7 to 30 kg (15 to 65 lb). The rock drill originally known as a jackleg was made by clamping a pneumatic cylinder or leg to a jack¬hammer, both to support the weight of the machine and to feed the tool forward in horizontal or uphole work. The more modern jackdrill refined this concept to make the hinged pivot for the leg integral with the drill cylinder and to group all drill and leg controls in the drill back head for convenience. Fig. 4 illustrates a typical jackdrill. Jackdrills are classified according to cylinder bore size, ranging from 60 to 83 mm (2.375 to 3.25 in.). Because of their light weight and versatility, jack drills are very effective in small drifts, small tunnel head¬ings, and stoping. "Himalayan geology poses the most challenging ground conditions almost anywhere in the world, one of the reasons thereof is their evolution as the youngest mountain chains. They are demonstratively rising faster than any mountain elsewhere. The composition is also younger, and consequently less well consolidated than the other older fold belts. This is consistent with the fact that they constitute one of the most active of the plate margin zones rising at a rate that is almost double the Andes, which is in turn three times that of the Alps. Thus, stress conditions (Magnitude and variations) can potentially be more extreme and adverse on a Himalayan tunneling project. Tunnel excavation under the Himalayan Mountains will pose significantly more challenges than an equal length and equal cover drive almost anywhere in the world. These in-depth-tunneling difficulties through high mountainous terrains have posed major challenges for application of traditional drill and blast (D&B) and NATM methods. Handling such adverse geology at any depth is always problematic and generally leads, if not adequately foreseen, to the significant tunneling delays. The author wants to highlight the challenges faced and on the spot solutions adopted while executing most prestigious 273Km long Udhampur –Srinagar- Baramula Rail Link Project (USBRL) in the Himalayas in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, India. The main focus of the paper is on main stretch of USBRL Project i.e. T-80 (India’s 2nd longest railway tunnel & 3rd longest in Asia) where the team of the author has recently completed a 11.2 Km long tunnel and where the train track has gone operational from Qazigund to Banihal. The construction of this stretch posed several challenges akin to highly adverse geological conditions. Executing on -the -spot solutions, the project has been completed successfully. 1.0 INTRODUCTION Construction of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Broad gauge railway line is one of the Mega projects undertaken by Indian Railways to establish a dependable transportation in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In engineering terminology, it is a challenging project negotiating breakthroughs against the complex Himalayan geology. The Project which has been operational over last 12 years , stretch by stretch, is in advance stage of construction . The purpose of the prestigious project is to connect the Kashmir valley to the mainland of the state of the country. On the date owing to the hurdles of the tuff terrain, the transport of this part is totally dependent on the surface transport, i.e., through a road which connects NH-1A from Delhi to Srinagar. The altitude of the region varies from 500.00 to 1700.00, ranging through Udhampur to Katra - Reasi –Sangaldan- Banihal-Quazikund-Ananthnag-Srinagar-and Baramulla. The main features of this project are its Pirpanjal Tunnel and T-48 & 49 tunnels which cover the maximum length of tunneling through thick hostile geological conditions, the total length being 138km. Details of Pirpanjal tunnels are shown in Figure-1."

Reconstruction of historical exposures to silica dust is required in an ongoing cohort mortality study of workers in the diatomaceous earth (DE) industry. However, historical data were collected using three different sampling methods. This study was conducted to derive empirical quantitative relationships from linear regression equations between the three methods: standard impinger, total mass, and respirable mass. Dust from one diatomaceous earth processing plant was sampled simultaneously by all three methods. Results from 61 clusters of the three sampling devices indicate that the phcle size distribution of the dust varies with the two parent products sampled. baghouse product and main product. The relationships between particle counts and respirable mass are: Respirable mass (mg/m3) = 0.064 (mppd) impinger count for baghouse product dust, and respirable mass (mg/m3) = 0.018 (mppcf) impinger count for main product dust. The relationships between particle counts and total mass are: Total mass (mg/m3) = 0.837 (mppcf) impinger count for baghouse product, and total mass (mg/m3) = 1.21 (mppcf) for main product dust. In all four euuations, the intercept did not differ significantly from zero, and the correlation coefficients ranged from 0.90 to 0.95. Results are compared with data from four previously published studies.

Zoning and environmental restrictions on land usage now make open- pit quarrying more and more difficult, especially near urban areas. One option for quarry operators is to go underground for mineral production. While underground-mining costs are higher than those for open-cut work, there are several compensating advantages. In many cases it is possible to produce the same material underground without affecting land values, and the surface is preserved for industrial, residential, or agricultural purposes. Proper planning can yield underground sites which have great potential value for industrial plants, warehouses, or other business uses. It is essential to plan underground mineral extraction using a three-dimensional modular-room architectural concept to fully exploit secondary space utilization. Prior to the start of underground mining an operator must make a careful geological engineering study to deter- mine the suitability of the deposit and must prepare a plan for safe and economical mining for the purpose of converting to secondary usage.

The Climax Molybdenum Mine, located near Leadville, Colorado, is the site of a lengthy mining history spanning more than 80 years. In the 1960’s, extraction of molybdenum from oxide ore located adjacent to the massive molybdenite sulfide deposit resulted in the construction of an earthen core dam to impound fine-grained oxide tailing in the Eagle River Valley. Through recognized value of water storage and reclamation opportunities, a tailing removal project was initiated in 1993 to convert the impoundment facilities to a post-mining beneficial land use of developed water resources. An evaluation of the effect residual materials and lake dynamics would have on in-stream water quality was performed. Eagle Park Reservoir stands as a model for future reclamation efforts that involve water delivery to highly sensitive receiving waters. This paper provides a case study on project development, the evolution of water quality assessment, and the regulatory framework that contributed to this project’s success.

The separation and recovery of copper from cyanide solution has been investigated since the early 1900s. The precipitation of copper using sulfide ion was patented in 1911 by Williamson, published by Leaver & Woolf of the USBM in 1931 and Cyanamid in 1960s. The current practice of sulfide precipitation is used in various processes such as “SART" for cyanide regeneration and copper recovery. The precipitation of copper sulfide requires the pH of the clear solution to be in the range of 4-6. The precipitated copper sulfide can be sold to smelters. Alternatively, copper cyanide can be precipitated from clear solutions in the pH range of 2-3. However, selling copper cyanide is challenging because of its cyanide content. Past work has focused on the use of boiling sulfuric acid to convert copper cyanide to copper sulfate as published by Seracini in 1991. This paper describes a simple process to convert copper cyanide to copper oxide using sodium hydroxide at ambient temperatures. The cuprite can be sold to smelters or used as a feed to an electrowinning circuit to produce copper cathodes. The process provides an effective method to recover copper from cyanide solutions with a lower capital requirement.

Installation of a Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) provides an economical method for conversion of a Fixed Speed Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill into one with variable speed, qualities. Though capital intensive, the conversion appears to be one of the most cost-effective methods to gain the advantage of critical speed variations for variable ore characteristics. Expected advantages from the installation of LCI drives at the Goldstrike Mine were decreased liner wear, decreased media consumption and additional grind for increased production rates. These issues as well as construction, economics and performance will be discussed in the presentation. The utilization of the existing equipment came to play an integral part of the study and economic justification of the overall project.

Microsilica or silica fume is a waste material generated from silicon or silicon-containing alloys producing electric furnaces. One of its usage is as an additive in the concrete production. This investigation describes a process to use microsilica as a feed material to produce fine silicon carbide. A thermal plasma reactor is used to convert this waste material into a value added ceramic. Details of the theoretical considerations, experimental work, and characterization are presented in this work

Increased production through the plant was limited due to thickener circuit constraints. To overcome these constraints and maximize plant throughput to match grinding circuit capability, two options were considered: A. Adding 2000 TPD CIL circuit to operate in parallel with the existing CCD circuit. B. Adding a CIL circuit to treat the entire 4600 TPD while retaining some thickeners for tailings thickening. Option B was selected based on simplified plant operations, reduced operating costs, minimal capital requirements, reduced solution losses, and bullion grade improvement.

The Cortez Mining District has had a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862 as previously reported (1) (2). More recently Cortez Gold Mines (i) has operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the U.S. for treating higher grade finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1520 tonnes per day on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. Starting in 1973, the mill was operated at 2050 tonnes per day on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres which is located 13 kilometers to the west of the Cortez installation. In February of 1976 the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operation. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Much valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs and is well described in an earlier publication (3). Releaching of the ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez was continued with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979.

More recently, Cortez Gold Mines had operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the US for treating higher grade, finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. In 1973, the mill was operated at 2 kt/d (2200 stpd) on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres, located 13 km (8 miles) west of Cortez, NV. In February 1976, the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operations. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs (Duncan and Smolik, 1977). The ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez were releached with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979. The surge in the price of gold in late 1979 sparked an interest to incorporate new techniques into treating lower grade and less oxidized carbonaceous ores at Cortez. In early 1980, heap leaching was started on low grade oxidized dump material left from the earlier Cortez mining operation. By June of 1980, testwork was completed on the London Extension Dump, a low grade, mildly carbonaceous dump at Gold Acres. It was decided to convert the mill at Cortez from the conventional cyanide leach CCD recovery plant to a carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery system. In May 1983, ore processing from the Horse Canyon deposit began. The Horse Canyon ore body contains both oxide and carbonaceous ores and is located 22.5 km (14 miles) from the Cortez mill. The Cortez CIL circuit was expanded to handle a blend of oxide and carbonaceous ores from Horse Canyon. Ore selection In the last quarter 1979, gold prices were increasing to a point where restarting the Cortez mill, idled since 1976, appeared imminent. Several previously explored geologic reserves at various stages of development were available as possible sources of feed for the mill. Initial metallurgical testing of dumps and tailings from earlier operations was completed, and previously uneconomic deposits were explored. It was decided to pursue sources of ore with the least lead time to production and those with the least capital cost requirements. A master plan was developed to bring the four profitable ore resources into production. Carbon dioxide capture from coal-fired power plant flue gas and subsequent sequestration is expected to play a vital role in mitigating global climate change. To meet the growing need for CO2 capture Technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and Utilization. We have successfully converted CO2 into oxalic acid using an electrochemical approach. If oxalic acid can be produced in bulk from CO2, it can be used to leach rare earth minerals at low cost. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons and other chemicals is a complex multistep reaction with adsorbed intermediates. The exact reaction mechanisms leading to various products are not clear from the literature to date and will likely change over the range of conditions like pH, electrode potential, electrolyte medium, catalyst, etc. In this paper, we will present an idea of how the factors mentioned above will effect the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to Oxalic acid. INTRODUCTION. CO2 is thermodynamically quite stable, as shown by its highly negative heat of formation. Thus, it is expected that the formation of any useful chemical from CO2 will require the input of at least as much energy as geological sequestration. However, to be more effective the resulting economic value of the chemical need only pass the cost of the additional energy required beyond geological sequestration. This lends itself to two extremes: one where the quantity of energy required is low and one where the economic value of the additional energy is low. It is expected that CO2 can be reduced via electrolysis to several compounds. Of particular interest are formic acid, oxalic acid, methanol, ethanol, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide (as a component to syn-gas). These chemicals have been reported as electrolytic products previously in literature and have considerable potential for application. EXPERIMENTAL Electrocatalytic Production of Oxalate from CO2 We are using membrane electrolysis cell to produce oxalate from CO2. A membrane electrolysis cell is a 2-chamber electrolysis cell where the chambers are separated by a selectively permeable membrane. To produce oxalate, a cation exchange membrane (which selectively exchanges cations) was used. Previous literature suggests that in the cathode chamber an organic electrolyte, such as tetraethylammonium perchlorate or tetraethylammonium bromide in dimethylformamide, are preferred3. In the anode chamber, a sodium hydroxide solution water is used. Carbon dioxide is then bubbled into the cathode chamber as a current is applied.

With increased CO2 emissions from steel and coal industry, there is great opportunity to capture CO2 and utilize the captured CO2 for economic advantage. The primary goal is to develop energy-efficient processes that reductively couple CO2, an abundant and renewable carbon source, for the production of value-added chemicals such as methanol, ethanol, and oxalic acid. These chemicals can be used elsewhere in the refining process or sold as valuable by-products. Geological sequestration, in comparison, has no economic return. Current CO2 utilization research at Michigan Technological University focuses on electrochemical reduction of CO2. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons and other chemicals is a complex multistep reaction with adsorbed intermediates. The exact reaction mechanisms leading to various products are not clear from the literature to date and will likely change over the range of conditions like pH, electrode potential, electrolyte medium, catalyst, etc. This paper will present different ideas and their viability to utilize CO2 as a feedstock to produce several value-added compounds. INTRODUCTION Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere will need to be drastically reduced to curb the various undesirable effects of climate change. The large contribution in total CO2 emission originates from coal or natural gas power plants, and a considerable amount from steel plants. Average CO2 emissions in the US from steel industry is 2.9t CO2/t steel (Global CCS Institute 2013). Capturing the available CO2 from the steel and coal industries for economic advantage is a win-win situation for the industry. This technology is not only important scientifically but is also vital for a sustainable future. The various ongoing investigations can be categorized as biochemical, thermochemical, photochemical, and electrochemical approaches. Among these, the electrochemical method shows the most promise as an efficient form of CO2 conversion technology, because of its many advantages like high reactivity under ambient conditions and good extensibility from small- to large-scale processes1 BACKGROUND Extensive research has been done on the chemistry of transforming carbon dioxide into more useful products. Methods are known to convert carbon dioxide into a wide variety of substances, including methanol, isobutanol, carbohydrates, methane, carbonates, urea, formic acid, oxalic acid, carbon monoxide, epoxides, formaldehyde, and so on. Several of these (carbohydrates, formaldehyde, isobutanol etc.) are primarily results from biological processes. The rest are results of strong reduction reactions or electrolytic reduction. In short, electrolytic reduction can be used to form methane, methanol, formic acid, oxalic acid, carbon monoxide from carbon dioxide2. CO2 reduces at the cathode in an electrolysis cell. These processes have the general form of generating the carbon dioxide anion radical (2⋅−) and allowing it to react with itself or the electrolyte3. Catalysts can be added to influence the formation of the anion radical or to suppress side reactions3. The electrolyte, catalyst, voltage, electrode material and CO2 content are all known to effect the reaction pathway. JNARDDC has evaluated bauxite deposits of India from the geo-technological point of view. During the evaluation studies, it was observed that bauxite deposits are associated with saprolite resources. During bauxite mining, various low-grade materials such as saprolite, laterite and low-grade bauxite are generated. These materials typically have low-alumina, high-iron oxide and high-silica content. Owing to their inferior quality, these materials cannot be used for alumina production and hence remain unutilized at the mine site. For the present study, the saprolite samples were collected from the Western Ghats bauxite deposits in India. The sintering studies were conducted on saprolite granules using a variety of parameters. The sintered granules were characterized, and their properties determined. The test results showed that bulk density, apparent density, porosity and refractoriness (PCE 1645–1659 °C) of the aggregates were within the range of refractory specifications. The feasibility tests carried out at the refractory industry indicated that the developed aggregates are suitable as refractory material and can substitute for calcined clay. Currently, high-purity clay resources used in the refractory industry are limited and fast exhausting; therefore, the industry is likely to face an acute shortage of raw materials, which will become more critical in the future. Therefore the sintered granules (aggregates) developed from saprolite, which is a mining waste, provide a low-cost, eco-friendly solution for the fast-exhausting resources of the high-purity clays. The developed process may change the Indian bauxite mining scenario because saprolite may substitute as a potential raw material for the refractory industry.

INTRODUCTION Section 209(b) of the Federal Land Policy And Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA-43 U.S.C. 1719 b) authorizes the Secretary of the Interior to convey mineral interests owned by the United States where the surface is or will be in non-Federal ownership. The objective is to allow consolidation of surface and subsurface (mineral) ownership. Certain major conditions must prevail for a conveyance to occur. These are: 1) There are no known mineral values (KMV) or 2) Where the mineral reservation interferes with or precludes appropriate non-mineral surface development and that non-mineral development is a more beneficial use of the land than the mineral development. Remember that allegation, hypothesis or speculation that the conditions could or may exist in the future will not be a sufficient basis for conveyance. Convincing factual evidence for an applicant’s case for mineral conveyance must be made in order to achieve that conveyance. See 43 CFR 2720 0-1 to 0-3, and 0-6. CONCEPT OF KNOWN MINERAL VALUES Known mineral values means mineral rights in lands containing geologic formations that are valuable in the monetary sense for exploring, developing, or producing natural mineral deposits. The presence of such mineral deposits with potential for mineral development may be known because of previous exploration, or may be inferred based on geologic information (43-CFR 2720.0-5(b).

Development of the Twin Buttes mine entailed the largest known preproduction stripping job in the history of mining. It linked earthmovers and conveyor belts in a new approach to development of a pit that may reach, or even exceed, dimensions of 1 x 1-1/2 miles at the surface and go as deep as 1800 feet. The orebody to be stripped was covered by an average of 460 feet of alluvial gravels, which presented an initial stripping job of great magnitude. The initial pit layout and the original time schedule established early in 1965 called for the excavation and disposal of about 250,000,000 tons of alluvial overburden before the end of 1969. Allowing about a year for equipment delivery, this schedule left four years to do the job averaging about 62-1/2 million tons per year. In 1964 when The Anaconda Company undertook the development of Twin Buttes, it was recognized that special planning was necessary for the disposal of waste material and tailings. Environ- mental control was a prime consideration and is particularly sensitive in the Twin Buttes area due to the proximity to residential developments. Disposal of the 250,000,000 tons of alluvium, as well as future rock and tailing waste material, presented a problem which Anaconda engineers resolved by designing a plan to spread out much of the alluvium over an extended area, including a massive 11- 1/2 mile dike system which will impound mill tailing in three basins. With the cost competitive nature of material mining, the ability to actively monitor the condition of the conveyor belt systems without personnel dedicated to that task is very desirable. This paper discusses the development of a conveyor belt condition monitoring system, which actively monitors the conveyor belt, without the need to install special antennas. A belt width map can be generated, as well as detection of three types of physical damages: (a) failure of mechanical fasteners, (b) reduction in belting strength due to reductions in competent belt width, and (c) longitudinal belt rips.
