The prereduction and smelting characteristics of UG-2 ore were studied and compared with those of Winterveld chromite ore. The UG-2 ore proved more reducible, and substantial prereduction (over 70 per cent reduction after 30 minutes at 1250oC) was obtained. No difficulty was experienced in the production oh high-carbon ferrochromium alloy containing 48 to 50 per cent chromium. Calculations of the energy balance show that UG-2 chromite has lower total energy requirements (both on the basis of unit of ferrochromium produced and of total chromium content). More than 50 per cent of the energy required for reduction can be supplied outside the smelting furnace.

Cementation has been used extensively by chemists and metallurgists as an economical process for the purification and recovery of metals from dilute solutions. The paper deals. firstly. with the thermodynamic aspects of cementation. and. secondly, with the effects of various process variables, such as temperature. stirring speed. initial concentrationof copper ions. pH of the solution, atmosphere, and surface area of the precipitant metal. on the kinetics of the process in the light of the rate expressions.

The role of gravity concentration in the recovery of gold from typical South African gold ores is described. The location of the concentrator in the grinding circuit is discussed, and typical capacities and operating costs are given. Some operating problems are mentioned, but the performance of concentrating equipment is not dealt with in detail since this to some extent depends on the nature of the ore. It is concluded that the main benefits are an improved recovery of coarse gold and a reduction in soluble loss. The use of a long leaching time and a carbon-in-pulp recovery system may eliminate the need for gravity concentration. but gravity concentration is seen as an inexpensive way of improving the recovery on existing plants.

A contactor has been designed that avoids solvent loss due to coalescence and other causes. This consists of a column packed with grids. Slurry enters at the top and flows as films down the inclined surfaces of the grids. The solvent, which fills the column, flows counter currently to the slurry. Tests on, and modifications to the contactor are described. '

The Grootegeluk coal-beneficiation plant was erected in the Waterberg coalfield, near Ellisras in the Transvaal, to supply Iscor's steelworks with a predetermined tonnage of coking coal in accordance with strict quality requirements. This plant has to handle a high tonnage of raw coal, which is not easy to beneficiate, in order to produce 1,82 X IQ6t of coal. Extensive tests were conducted on borehole cores and a mass sample of coal obtained from the area. These tests were carried out on a laboratory and pilot-plant scale, and were aimed at the establishment of the most effective beneficiation methods and the choice of suitable equipment. This led to the completion of a full set of design and manufacturing drawings that resulted in the project approach . described in this paper.

As the grade of the gold (head grade) in the ore supplied to a reduction plants falls, the efficiency of recovery of the metal drops. This is not simply due to a fixed grade lost in the residue, since the residue grade is itself a function of the head grade. A multi-disciplinary approach was used in the construction of a model to represent the relationship between head grade and recovery efficiency. The model is a physicochemical one based on (i) the reaction characteristics of cyanidation, (ii) the milled-ore selection characteristics of gravity concentration, and (iii) the nearly log normal distribution of gold grades and particle sizes in ore reserves. The model was used to set sound target levels for recovery efficiency for a given head grade at a given plant, against which the performances of the plant equipment can be judged for control purposes.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, held in Johannesburg on 29th June, 1982, the following leading members of the mining industry were elected to office for the 1982-1983 term: Mr W. Nisbet Vice President William Wouter Malan was born in Springs on 7th November, 1928, and was educated at the Springs High School and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c degree in mining engineering. Diamond Mines. Mr Nisbet became a consulting engineer of the Anglo American Corporation in 1972, and a deputy managing director of the Gold Division in 1974. George Young Kisbet was born in Benoni in 1923 and was educated at Pretoria Boys High and the University of the Witwatersrand. This paper reviews the major deposits of lower-grade chromite in the world, and a wide variety of methods used for the recovery of chromium from them. Gangue materials in more coarsely sized ores can be separated by gravity means, whereas flotation techniques are required for finer-grained materials. However, unless there is considerable Iron In the ores, physical means cannot increase the Cr/Fe ratios. Chemical techniques such as hydrometallurgical methods, chlorination, roasting and leaching, and smelting are required for this purpose. A greater understanding of the physical properties of chromites and the chemical reactions that take place in the recovery operations is required before. the recoveries from lower-grade chromites can be maximized. More efficient recovery operations can be realized If It can be shown definitively that the reduction of chromites occurs via either a gas-solld or solid-solid mechanism, for example. The effects of specific impurities on the chromite reduction reactions need to be better understood, as do reagent and pH control in the flotation of chromite.

The importance of the minerals industry in the economy of the country is discussed, and the tremendous changes that have taken place over the past two decades, including the widespread application of computers and the use of mechanization, are outlined. A discussion of the future of the minerals industry points out that, with the rise in the price of gold, the life of the gold-mining industry can be expected to extend beyond that previously predicted, and that the demand for uranium, which has been depressed, is uncertain. As a result of the oil crisis, the demand for coal has increased and large expansion programmes are planned. These involve coal exports and the use of coal for the generation of electric power, for the production of liquid fuels, and for the smelting of metals. Technical challenges face engineers in every avenue of the minerals industry: in deep gold mines, underground coal mines, strip coal mines, and open-pit mines. Studies indicate that only one-third of the demand for trained mining and metallurgical engineers is being met and that the position is worsening. However, there are indications that the industry is succeeding in attracting more engineering students, and the supply is expected to improve. These efforts should be co-ordinated, expanded, and intensified. There is a need to ensure that sufficient teaching staff of the right calibre and experience are attracted to universities and technikons. The first degree course is comprehensive and basic, and specialization through post-graduate study should be encouraged. The influence of national service on the education and training of engineers is discussed.

Reichert cone concentrators are used successfully in many applications, but have as yet not found favour in the gold mining industry on the Witwatersrand, because, for optimum operation, the cones need to have specially designed feed-preparation and circuit details. In addition, good liberation of the valuable minerals is essential. Gravity tests, in which a pilot plant was used on refractory gold ore, showed that 94 per cent of the gold could be extracted after gravity concentration and preferential grinding, roasting, and cyanidation of the concentrate, whereas 96 per cent could be extracted by flotation followed by the same preferential treatment. However, the capital and operating costs for gravity separation are expected to be considerably lower than those for flotation.

The loading and selective properties of a number of commercial and experimental resins developed for the extraction of base metals were evaluated. Particular applications that ",:ere considered included the extraction of copper from artificial dump liquors, the treatment of Iow-grade copper, nickel, and cobalt liquors, and the removal of nickel from a cobalt electrolyte. Reagents that showed promise were two experimental resins developed at Mintek containing pyridyl imidazole active groups and two Dow resins, XF4195 and XF4196.
