The flotation work on samples from nine fluorspar properties in Crittenden and Livingston Counties, Ky., reported herewith was part of a wartime project that resulted in increasing the supply of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. The samples were tailings, dumps, and waste rock that had been rejected in previous milling operations. All were treated successfully by flotation to yield metallurgical-grade concentrates with recoveries ranging from 77.5 to 98.3 percent of the fluorite. After the laboratory testing, the results of which were available to the owners and operators of the properties, many of the tailing ponds and rock dumps were milled. The real value of this report, therefore, is to show the operators of gravity concentration plants the possibilities of re-treating waste products by flotation either at some future time or currently with the gravity

The Bureau of Mines repeatedly surveyed a grid of monuments over an active longwall mine panel in southwestern Pennsylvania during a 1-year period. Both conventional ground surveying techniques and photogrammetry were used. The objective of this investigation was to compare elevation measurements of subsidence obtained from aerial and ground survey methods under dynamic ground conditions. The results of a statistical analysis of the survey data show that the mean of the differences between 372 matched pairs of elevation measurements was 0.20 ft (61 mm) with a 95-pct-confidence interval of 0.05 ft (15 mm). The mean of the absolute values of the differences was 0.38 ft (116 mm) with a 95-pct-con-fidence interval of 0.04 ft (12 mm). Ninety-five percent of the absolute values of the differences were less than 1.11 ft (338 mm).

The Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center has as a long-range objective the development of an equation of state for helium that will allow all of the thermodynamic properties to be calculated within the accuracy with which they are known. If this objective is to be realized, a method of calculation must be known. This report gives the principles of the method we use in such problems. A computer program was developed for predicting these properties, including those at the critical point, that is perfectly general and applicable to any equation of state. To demonstrate the efficacy of our method, this computer program was used to evaluate thermodynamic properties of a Redlich-Kwong fluid in the two-phase region. Expressions for calculating various thermodynamic functions specific for this particular equation of state are derived. Numerical values are tabulated and graphs are presented for all functions calculated. It is shown that for a Redlich-Kwong fluid there are finite discontinuities in (1) the second temperature derivative of the Gibbs free energy or chemical potential at the critical point, (2) the second derivative of the vapor pressure curve with regard to the temperature on passing through the critical point, and (3) the measured heat capacity at constant volume on passing through the critical temperature when the calorimeter is filled to the critical density. It is also shown that the heat of vaporization is infinite for a Redlich-Kwong fluid at absolute zero.

Combined preservative/fire retardant systems were pressure impregnated into Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine samples and evaluated for decay, flammability, and mechanical properties. The objective of the evaluation was to identify cost-effective systems for use with mine timber, and to provide an information and data base from which Federal code regulations could be established. Thirty systems, based on combinations of commercially available preservatives and fire retardant impregnants and coatings, were applied to Douglas fir samples and evaluated for decay and flammability. The ten most promising systems were ap¬plied to both fir and pine and reevaluated for decay and flammability before and after water leaching. The five best systems were given a thorough laboratory evaluation using both pine and fir. Evaluations included flame spread, smoke density, toxic gases, decay, compressive strength, flammability after artificial weathering, and cost. All systems had acceptable toxic gas levels and smoke densities, but flame spread was only borderline acceptable for most of the samples tested. A trade-off analysis showed Acid Copper Chromate/Fyrprufe with Albi-107A/144 intumescent paint and Koppers NCX to be the-best systems. Recommendations are made for further large-scale testing using the two best Systems.

Water sprays and water powered scrubbers have both been utilized in the mining and milling industry to suppress airborne dust. Unconfined water sprays operated at lower water pressures of ?689 kPa (?100 psig) can be very effective at wetting the mine product at the dust source and significantly reducing the amount of respirable dust that becomes airborne. However, unconfined waters sprays can be somewhat ineffective in actually removing airborne dust from the air. On the other hand, water powered scrubbers operating at higher water pressures of ?1,724 kPa (?250 psig) in physical enclosures or ducts have previously been demonstrated to be very effective in removing airborne dust from the air. These higher operating water pressures are uncommon in many mines and mills, so their use is limited. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently investigated the performance of a lower-pressure, water powered inline series spray scrubber for removing localized airborne dust emitted at the source. Results showed noticeable improvements in airborne dust capture efficiency through the operation o f multiple inline series hollow cone spray nozzles within a round duct or pipe at the same water pressure as a single spray. Operating hollow cone spray(s) at higher water pressures noticeably improved airflow through the scrubber and yielded some additional scrubber efficiency improvements. Thus, in-line spray scrubber efficiency trade-offs were observed to be made by altering spray power components of water pressure and/or quantity (number of sprays). Results show that, on average, up to 0.23 and 0.32 m3/s (484 and 679 cu ft per min) of airflow at 0.81 and 0.69 dust capture efficiencies can be achieved with three 81° and 33°hollow cone inline series sprays, respectively, operating at 1,655 kPa (240 psig).

A study of the ignition of non-fire-resistant hydraulic fluid sprays was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Both an open flame and a hot steel surface were used as the external heat sources. With the open flame as the heat source, the minimum oil temperature and minimum spray nozzle pressure that resulted in an ignition were measured. The effects of the distance between the open flame and the nozzle and the nozzle orifice diameter on the ignitability of the hydraulic fluid sprays were examined. With the hot surface as the heat source, the minimum surface ignition temperature was determined. The degree of oil atomization and the relative direction of oil injection with respect to the hot surface are discussed. The ignition of oil sprays from the impingement of oil jets onto a vertical surface was also investigated. Finally, the results are compared with those obtained for fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. "INTRODUCTION Compressed air for operating coal-mining equipment is seldom considered in conjunction with modern methods and appliances. But the Jamison Coal & Coke Co. has proved the economy and efficacy of compressed air for this purpose at its Mine 8 near Farmington, 8 miles west of Fairmont, Marion County, W.. Va., and the mining industry as a whole concedes its superior safety in gassy or dusty coal mines.The uses for compressed air in coal mining are now generally associated with such equipment as coal punchers, chain-breast machines, and to a lesser extent the ""radialaxe"" type of mining machines.Electricity has rapidly superseded compressed air for power in coal mines during the past 20 years; and in the last few years the general, and often unwise, use of electricity at the face region has taken on added impetus through the widespread use of mechanical loading equipment.Some of the unfavorable results of this increased use of electricity are shown in the growing number of mine explosions and fires of electrical origin. In the past four years 59 explosions of this type took the lives of 672 men, or 74.8 per cent of the total number of deaths from explosions were due to explosions of electrical origin.3In 1926, an explosion in Mine 8 of the Jamison Co. killed 19 men. The exact source of ignition was not determined, although it was definitely decided that it was of electrical origin and probably was at an electric coal-cutting machine.Prior to this disaster the company had done some experimenting with compressed-air-driven mining machines, and its Mine 9 had been completely equipped with air-driven chain-breast machines; a few of these machines were also in use in Mine 8. The explosion, however, gave impetus to the adoption by this company of compressed air for operating face equipment. The chain-breast machines were as satisfactory as electric machines of the same type; but the trend in the industry was toward faster cutting machines, which required less physical exertion on the part of the operating crews. A track-mounted machine of the arcwall type was found to be suitable for the conditions and system of mining, so that one of these operated by compressed air was developed by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. working with the officials of the Jamison Co.The first of these machines was installed in the latter part of 1926 and additional machines were delivered from time to time, until at present there are nine of them in the mine. Necessary improvements have been made, with the result that a fast-cutting, easily handled, efficient, and safe mining machine has been developed for cutting the hard Pitts¬burgh bed coal of the Fairmont field."

Heats of solution of samarium (III) oxide and chloride in hydrochloric acid and of samarium (III) oxide, sulfate, and hydrated sulfate in sulfuric acid were measured. The heats of solution of this hygroscopic oxide are larger than those from the literature, probably because of more complete removal of water in the present study. From the literature value for the heat of combustion of samarium, the heats of formation of samarium (III) chloride and sulfate are -244.18 ± 0.41 and -928.5 ± 1.6 kcal./mole, respectively. The heat of hydration of the sulfate is -34.7 ± 1.0 kcal./mole. The heats of formation of other samarium com-pounds have been recalculated, using the new data.

A centrifugal float-and-sink test procedure has been developed by the Bureau of Mines to reduce the time for the gravimetric separation of coals finer than l4-mesh from as long as 24 hours to less than 1 hour. Comparative tests indicated that centrifuging a minus 14-mesh Pittsburgh-bed coal for 20 minutes at 1,500 revolutions per minute produced results that compared favorably with static float-and-sink test results. Standard deviations of the mean recovery and ash content of the float obtained centrifugally ranged from 1.31 and 0.04 percent, respectively, at 1.30 specific gravity to 0.21 and 0.05 percent, respectively, at 1.60 specific gravity. As in static separations, retreatment of the products separated at low specific gravities was required.

Although coal is found in several locations in Virginia, almost all recent mining has occurred in the southwestern part of the state. Potentially minable reserves are estimated at 2.6 billion tons, slightly less than one percent of the national total. Coal ranges from high- to low-volatile bituminous, and seams average three to four feet in thickness. Virginia produces coal with higher BTUs (British Thermal Units) and a lower sulfur content than the national average. Historically its high quality has made Virginia coal attractive for metallurgical coke production and for the export market. Coal production and related industries have a significant economic impact in southwestern Virginia. In the seven coal- producing counties, coal mining is the major industry. In the two largest coal-producing counties (Buchanan and Wise), over 40 percent of total earning is derived from the coal industry. Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved December 15,198 1, and received final approval May 8, 1984. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved with the regulatory program December 15, 1981, with emergency program authority approved November 13,1987.

"Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism is still not fully understood. Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has. been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed subjects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting disease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the expression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). This article summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica dusts and how silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on hydrogen bonding and free-radical interactions."

"INTRODUCTION The Ward copper deposit was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in September 1943 by John J. Knob, 217 E. Penn Street, Long Beach, N. Y. At that time all Bureau of Mines work on Seward Peninsula was being directed to the exploration of deposits of tin, a metal high on the strategic list. It was not until September 1946 that the Bureau could make a preliminary examination of the Ward prospect.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This paper examines methods for limiting occupational silica exposures for roof bolting personnel in underground coal mining. A canopy air curtain and an air tube were evaluated as means to provide filtered air over the breathing zone of these personnel. Laboratory testing showed that dust reductions beneath the air curtain and air tube approached 60 percent and 40 percent, respectively, with low interference air velocities. The data also showed that dust reductions were highest for positions closest to the device and that these levels decreased with distance. This paper also evaluates a metal rake, a flexible insert, and a rigid insert for cleaning the roof bolter dust collector box. Less dust was produced when using the rigid insert. Surprisingly, the flexible insert was sometimes no better than scraping or raking the dust onto the mine floor. However, little dust got on the coveralls when using either of the inserts.

To minimize support costs and to improve ground control by improving wood-crib design and utilization through the development of engineering methods that will match the placement and performance of the wood cribs to the load conditions imposed by the mine environment. Background While wood cribs are used extensively to stabilize mine openings, their utilization is often based on historical practice or trial-and-error rather than on engineering design. This has led to conservative crib utilization where more capacity than is necessary is employed or inadequate capacity is provided when mine conditions worsen. Critical design parameters, such as the stiffness of the support structure, are often ignored. Optimum crib design and employment is becoming increasingly important as the utilization of wood cribs increase due to the growth of longwall mining, and as the cost of wood continues to rise. A single longwall operation will spend as much as a million dollars per year on the support of the gate roads.

The work-principle from thermodynamics was used to formulate a model for predicting toxic fumes from mining explosives in underground chamber tests, where rapid turbulent combustion within the surrounding air noticeably changes the resulting concentrations. Two model constants were required to help characterize the reaction zone undergoing rapid chemical transformations in conjunction with heat transfer and work output: a stoichiometry mixing fraction and a reaction-quenching temperature. Rudimentary theory with an unsteady uniform concentration gradient was taken to characterize the combustion zone, yielding 75% for the mixing fraction. Four quenching temperature trends were resolved and compared to test results of ammonium nitrate compositions with different fuel-oil percentages (ANFO). The quenching temperature 2345 K was the optimum choice for fitting the two major components of fume toxicity: carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOx). The resulting two-constant model was used to generate comparisons for test results of ANFO compositions with additives. Though respectable fits were usually found, charge formulations which reacted weakly could not be resolved numerically. The work-principle model yields toxic concentrations for a range of charge formulations, making it a useful tool for investigating the potential hazard of released fumes and reducing the risk of unwanted incidents. In this report, the Bureau of Mines presents a theoretical solution for the stresses and displacements in an infinite elastic plate containing a circular hole the boundary of which is loaded by applied radial stresses over four separated arcs. The problem solved is a two-dimensional approximation of the stresses and displacements developed by a large tunnel-boring machine anchored in a circular tunnel. Analysis of the solution shows that the tangential tensile stresses induced on the boundary of the circular opening can be minimized in the roof and maximized in the floor of the opening by proper spacing and loading of the four arcs.

To clean coal mine air by developing a low-cost scrubber suitable for belt transfer and similar applications. Approach Design a scrubber operated by water only, with no moving parts. Use conventional water spray nozzles located within a duct to both move and clean the air. Use a droplet eliminator to get the water droplets and mist back out of the airstream. How It Works Conventional scrubbers require a mechanical fan driven by either an electric or a hydraulic motor. They also require water sprays and some type of scrubbing mechanism. The water powered scrubber, however, offers higher reliability over conventional scrubbers since it utilizes the water sprays to both move the air and scrub the particulate from the air. Conventional water spray nozzles are placed near one end of a rectangular duct open at both ends. The sprays are directed towards the far end of the duct where a stationary wave blade water droplet eliminator is located. Movement of the water spray droplets coming from the nozzles generates (by momentum transfer) an air movement In the same direction as the sprays. A cobalt/manganese occurrence in Clark County, Nevada was the subject of a site-specific mineral investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1988-90. The study site is in the northern part of the Million Hills (wilderness) study area which is administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Field work during a period of one week consisted of geological mapping and sampling of workings and outcrops, and geochemical and geophysical surveys conducted on four transects totalling 7,600 ft. Although the concentrations of cobalt (0.1 to 0.5 percent) detected in samples from the fissure zones are within the range of grades associated with world-class economic deposits, the volume of material enriched in cobalt at the study site is insufficient to warrant consideration as a potential resource. Concentrations of manganese, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, barium, and thallium, although anomalous, are too low for economic consideration. At the study site, workings consist of three trenches and nine pits. The exploration history is unknown, and no production is reported.

This is one of a series of papers describing mining and crushing methods and costs at cement plant quarries throughout the United States and deals directly with the methods employed and costs obtained at the Reliance quarry of the Giant Portland Cement Co. at Egypt, Pa., although it is more or less descriptive of the methods used throughout the Lehigh Valley cement district. Systems of transportation vary according to local conditions, such as proximity to the mill, depth of quarry floor with relation to the mill level, etc. Methods of prospecting differ mainly in the type f drills used. Systems of storage, crushing, and grinding vary chiefly in the types of units. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Most of the information regarding the early history of the Lehigh cement district was obtained from the History f the Portland Cement Industry of the United States, by Robert W. Lesley, the first president of the Portland Cement Association.
