Introduction The Flin Flon mine of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, is on the interprovincial boundary between Manitoba and Saskatchewan, about four hundred miles north of the Canada-United States boundary. The orebodies are gold, silver, zinc, and copper replacement deposits occurring as irregular lenses of massive sulphides, arranged en echelon, and irregular masses of disseminated copper sulphides in chlorite. The country rocks are of Precambrian age, dominantly lava flows. Development of the Mine The mine is opened by two vertical main shafts- the North Main and South Main shafts- 3,800 feet apart. The North Main shaft has a depth of 2,210 feet and the South Main shaft is completed for stoping operations to the 3,250-foot level (see Figure 1). These shafts are connected by main haulages driven, on the footwall side of the orebodies, at 520-foot intervals down to the 2,210-foot level. No. 3 (subsidiary) shaft is on the footwall side of the orebodies at a point between the North Main and South Main shafts, 2,400 feet south of the former. It has a depth of 3,250 feet and connects with all main haulage levels- with both Main shafts down to the 2,210-foot level and with the South Main shaft on the 2,750-, 3,000-, and 3,250-foot levels. Other openings tO the mine include B North fan raise, the opening due to the recovery of the open pit sill pillar, and several back-fill raises.

"The North Star and Don Jon copper deposits lie beneath the waters of Thompson Lake, which is 12 miles east of Flin Flon, Manitoba. The deposits were discovered during the years 1949 and 1951 by diamond drilling done in the vicinity of pyritic showings on the shores of two small islands in the lake. The Don Jon ore body lies 1, 700 feet southeast of the North Star orebody and is connected with the North Star mine workings by a crosscut on the 600-foot level (Figure 1 ).Production began on January 1, 1955, at a combined rate of 200 tons per day. The ore is trucked, on 24 miles of highway, to the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited mill at Flin Flon.Regional GeologyRocks in the Thompson Lake area are Precambrian volcanics, ranging in composition from andesite to rhyolite, with related tuffs and breccia. These rocks have a general north-south trend and are steeply dipping. The area is part of the Lac Aimee fault block, which probably is the southward extension of a south-plunging syncline now thrust some miles to the north. This regional deformation has produced many subsidiary zones of intense shearing and crumpling. It is in two of these zones of shearing and drag-folding that the orebodies occur. The only recognizable intrusive is a narrow diorite sill which trends northeasterly near the west shore of Thompson Lake.The North Star MineA pyritic showing, carrying some chalcopyrite, was discovered around the year 1930 on the west side of a small island near the west shore of Thompson Lake. This ground was included in a group of claims acquired by the Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co., Limited in 1947.In the years 1949 to 1951, a diamond drilling program outlined a copper sulphide orebody. This ore zone comes to surface beneath the lake, about 300 feet north of the pyritic showing on the island."

Introduction The discovery of artificial radioactivity, that is, of radioactivity of acorns other than those which are naturally radioactive, has increased vastly the possibility of using radioactivity as an analytical cool. The incomparable value of radioactive atoms, which are commonly termed tracers, arises from the extreme sensitivity of this analytical method. To get an idea of this extreme sensitivity it may be useful co recall that gravimetric analytical methods will not permit the weighing of anything much lighter than one-hundredth of a milligram of material. Under the most favourable circumstances, this represents an uncertainty in the answer of 1016 acorns, or 10,000,000,000,000,000 acorns. Accurate spectrographic methods possibly have a sensitivity 10,000 times greater than this, but the uncertainty is still of the order of 1012 atoms. The tracer permits ascertainment of decay of a single atom so that its sensitivity, without half trying, can be several orders of magnitude greater than that of any other method available co chemists. In addition co the sensitivity of tracers to which reference has just been made, tracers have another property which makes them unique. A radioactive atom is almost exactly like the corresponding non-radioactive acorn m regard to its electronic structure, and therefore in regard to its chemical properties. The nucleus is different, but the nucleus does not participate in chemical reactions. Therefore, a tracer acorn behaves like an ordinary atom until such time as its nucleus undergoes a catastrophic decay. This unique property permits one to use tracer acorns as atomic spies and therefore to follow the behaviour of acorns of a certain kind among their own kind. In other words, the tracer method permits us to study and measure what we call self-diffusion. All of the uses of tracers that have been made depend on the two properties co which reference has been made.

"ZINC-LEAD REPLACEMENT deposits straddle the steep-sided valley of Kicking Horse River at a point three miles east of Field, B.c., in Yoho National Park. The Monarch orebodies extend into Mt. Stephen on the south side of the valley, and outcrop at two points, 1,000 and 1,200 feet above the valley floor. The Kicking Horse deposits are in Mt. Field, on the north side of the valley, and they outcrop 200 feet lower.The East Monarch outcrop is said to have been discovered in 1884 during construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The larger West Monarch outcrop, 700 feet west of the original discovery, was not reached till 1917 because of its nearly inaccessible location on the cliff face.The Kicking Horse mine was staked in 1906. Little development was done for several decades, and mining was not commenced till 1935.At the East Monarch, mining was commenced soon after location, and several thousand tons of ore were shipped prior to 1912. At this time a gravity concentrator was installed. This was operated till 1924, and a total of 42,000 tons of ore were mined, including about 10,000 tons from the West Monarch. The period from 1928 to 1935 featured flotation milling and the mining of 265,000 tons of ore, mostly from the West Monarch orebody. Intensive exploratory development was carried out in both Monarch and Kicking Horse from 1935 to 1946. Production from both mines in this period totalled 380,000 tons. From 1947 to the time of closure in 1952, considerable new ore was found in both mines and 185,000 tons were milled. Immediate possibilities for finding ore in the Monarch were considered exhausted. Kicking Horse orebodies are known to persist with a low grade of zinc. Total production from the two mines amounts to 842,500 tons grading approximately 7 per cent lead, 10 per cent zinc, and 1.2 ounces per ton silver."

"The Canam property is in southern British Columbia, 24 miles southeast of Hope. It is reached by 5 miles of road from Mile 26 on the Hope-Princeton Highway.Between the years 1930, when the property was discovered, and I 938 development work by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited included some open-cuts and six adits totalling 2,700 feet in length. Canam Copper Company Ltd. explored the property intermittently from 1947 to 1955 by diamond drilling and underground work, including driving No. 10 adit. From surface down to the level of No. 10 adit, about 1,250,000 tons of ore has been outlined with an approximate grade of 1.25 per cent copper, 0.8 ounce silver per ton, and 0.01 ounce gold per ton. The ore in the upper part of the deposit also contains a little molybdenum and a little uranium.In June, 1955 Canam Copper Company Ltd. made arrangements to have the property brought into production under the direction of Mogul Mining Corporation Ltd. of Toronto, and a new low level adit has been started.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe principal rocks on the Canam property are chert, cherty argillite, and argillite. They are considered to be Jurassic or Lower Cretaceous in age. Although massive bands to 150 feet in thickness occur, these rocks are in general thinly bedded. Conformable bands of pyrrhotite, a fraction of an inch in thickness, are not uncommon in the well-bedded rocks, and fine tourmaline can be observed in various places.The sediments strike slightly west of north and dip quite steeply, generally eastward; however, sharp divergences from this general attitude are fairly common.Dark grey dioritic sills, in which slender prismatic crystals are conspicuous, are fairly common in the sediments. In general the sills are less than 25 feet in thickness, but a few are as much as 100 feet thick. Under the microscope the sills are seen to consist largely of amphibole (pargasite) and plagioclase (near An50)."

Diesel locomotives for underground haulage have been used in coal mines in Continental Europe for twenty-five years or more. In Great Britain, it was not until 1935 that permission was granted to use them in gassy coal mines, but since that time they have been employed in increasing numbers both in gassy and non-gassy coal mines and in metal mines. Their use underground in coal mines in the United States is still prohibited and the same was the case in Canada until 1946, when permission was granted to operate a Diesel underground in the Adanac mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, at Bellevue, Alberta. The locomotive used here is a 50 h.p. Hunslet Mark II. More recently, a 100 h.p. Diesel was placed in operation for underground haulage at No. 18 Colliery of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, in the Sydney coalfield, N. S. Thus, on this continent, Canada has been a pioneer in the use of these locomotives underground in coal mines and there is no doubt that more and more of them will be employed as time goes on. We feel, therefore, that the following notes concerning their design and performance, which we have received from the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, will be of interest to our members.

Introduction The manufacture of some asbestos products involves the use of asbestos in combination with water, cement and granular fillers. This type of production is often called the wet or semi-wet process and requires the use of either pressure or vacuum to eliminate the excess water in the fibrous blend so that the product may develop the proper strength during the curing stage. Asbestos - cement products available today are numerous and are a valuable contribution to the building industry. Their production in quantity depends upon the type of equipment employed, the speed at which it can be operated, and the factors involving the? blending of asbestos, cement, water, and fillers. Assuming that all mechanical troubles at a plant have been eliminated or are under control it is still advisable to study the basic properties of the raw materials used in the asbestos-cement products. The type of cement used is an important factor, but usually the manufacturer of the cement is willing to work with the asbestos development engineer and recommend the proper type to be used for the product. The source of the water should not be overlooked as a general factor involved in the production cycle. Waters containing a high percentage of contamination such as silts, humus, or soluble salts may adversely affect the setting of the cement or cause a slowing down of the production rate in the factory. Asbestos in combination with cement is an ideal material fo1 building products. It is inorganic, will not deteriorate, and can be handled by mechanical equipment with a minimum reduction of fibre length. The many physical properties peculiar to asbestos fibres should be well understood by the manufacturer. They may be briefly enumerated as follows: fibre strength, fibre composition, sliminess, length, harshness, softness, and filterability or porosity. This last named property is important and it is the purpose of this paper to present some basic studies on filtration as applied to production problems.

"The Property of Bevcon Mines Limited, including a recently acquired adjoining south group, occupies an area of 2,625 acres in northeast Louvicourt township, Abitibi county, Quebec. It is situated 17 miles east of Val d'Or at the junction of provincial highways 58 and 59.Gold was first discovered in the area in 1931 by the late S. B. Jowsey on the present property of Buffaddison Gold Mines adjoining to the west. However, it was not until the winter of 1944-45 that diamond drilling encountered encouraging results on the Bevcon claims. During the period 1946-1948 a shaft was sunk to 1,000 feet and considerable development undertaken from the 500-foot to the 1,000-foot levels. Between 1947 and 1950 approximately 24,000 tons of dump ore and 48,000 tons of ore by stoping were milled at Perron Gold Mines. The favourable results of these tests prompted the decision to construct a milling plant at Bevcon. The mill began operating in July 1952, and presently has a capacity of 800 tons per day. In 1953 the shaft was deepened to 1,600 feet and is currently (1955) being driven to 2,225 feet.Total production of gold to the end of 1954 has been 101,024 ounces from the milling of 697,427 tons of ore of an average grade of 0·163 ounces per ton.GeologyThe Bevcon orebodies occur in a granodiorite stock which has an east-west length of approximately 4 miles and a maximum width of 1 1/2 miles. The property covers the central portion of the stock and its contacts with the Keewatin volcanics. Approximately one-third of the northern contact and one-half of the southern contact are contained within the Bevcon claims. The granodiorite has been cut by acid (feldspar porphyry) and basic dykes trending east-west. A younger diabase dyke, 300 feet wide, strikes northeasterly across the property 1,000 feet east of the shaft.The main ore zone, striking east-west, lies between the more northerly porphyry dyke and the north granodiorite-greenstone contact. It has been extensively sheared, fractured, altered, and mineralized by gold-bearing solutions. It is approximately 2,000 feet Jong from the west boundary towards the diabase dyke. The shaft is centrally located and passes through the south contact of the ore zone at the 500-foot level. The zone increases in width and trends northerly with depth, due to the porphyry and greenstone contacts having average dips of 80 degrees and 70 degrees respectively to the north. Thus on the uppermost or 500-foot level the width is 150 to 200 feet, and at the present bottom level at 1,600 feet the width is 400 to 500 feet.Another gold-bearing zone has been indicated 200 to 400 feet south of the main ore zone by limited surface drilling."

"THE TOWN OF HEDLEY is in the valley of the Similkameen River, about 200 miles east of Vancouver and 25 miles north of the International Boundary between British Columbia and the State of Washington. The main ore deposits are located on Nickel Plate Mountain, northeast of the town.The outcrop of the Nickel Plate system of orebodies is at an elevation of 5,900 feet. It was discovered in 1898 by prospectors and sold in the following year to the Marcus Daly interests of Butte, Montana. Production commenced in 1904 under the name of Daly Reduction Company. In 1909 control passed into the hands of the Hedley Gold Mining Company. Operation of the mine continued until 1930, when exhaustion of known ore reserves forced it to close. Upon the recommendation of Paul Billingsley (3) the mine was optioned by the 1. W. Mercer Exploration Company in 1932. Production began once more in 1934 under the name of Kelowna Exploration Company Limited, and was practically continuous until August 1955, when the mine was again shut down. The name of the latter company was changed in 1951 to Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited.The Mascot Fraction, a small wedge-shaped claim lying astride the Nickel Plate orebodies, was mined by Hedley Mascot Gold Mines Limited between 1935 and 1949. The geological setting and structural control of ore are essentially the same as in the adjoining Nickel Plate Mine.Total production from all operations on Nickel Plate Mountain to the end of 1954 was approximately 3,800,000 tons of gold ore, with a gross value in excess of $48,000,000.General GeologyNickel Plate Mountain occupies the gentle westerly dipping limb of an asymmetrical anticline, the axis of which trends northeasterly. The rocks are composed of a thick pile of Triassic limestone, limy argillite, and quartzite, -resting on a flattish floor of granodiorite near the base of the mountain. Associated with these sediments is a host of porphyritic sills and dykes of gabbro-diorite composition. In the mine area east-west brown soda-rhyolite dykes and north-south black andesite dykes crosscut all the other formations and the ore, probably following steep later fractures."

"The Kerr-Addison mine is on the northeast shore of Larder Lake in the township of McGarry, District of Timiskaming, Ontario. It lies just south of the highway leading to the town of Kirkland Lake, 25 miles to the west.The property was first staked in the summer of 1906, by a party of prospectors led by a Dr. Reddick of Ottawa. Subsequent assessment work resulted in the erection of a 20-stamp mill in 1908. Gold from this mill was used in the first gold coins to be minted in Canada. The operation did not prove successful, however, and mining was suspended. In 1914 a consider-able amount of underground development was undertaken by the Associated Goldfields Co., without success.In 1936 Kerr-Addison Gold Mines Co. carried out large-scale sampling from four adits driven into the hillside at the mine. Results were not satisfactory, but it was decided to drill one last deep diamond drill hole from surface. The hole cut a wide section of gold ore. With this encouragement, further development outlined a large tonnage of ore, and a 500-ton mill was put into production in May, 1938. In 1939, its first full year, the mine produced 54,480 ounces of gold and 2,732 ounces of silver. By 1955 the mill had been expanded to a rate of 4,549 tons daily, and in this year 427,193 ounces of gold and 23,490 ounces of silver were produced.From 1938 to the end of 1955 the total production, from 17,473,797 tons milled, has been 3,607,462.74 ounces of gold (0.2064 ounces per ton), and 182,278.56 ounces of silver, with a total value of $131,073,037."

"The Pacific Nickel property lies 7 miles northwest of Hope and 100 miles east of Vancouver, in the Coast Mountains of southwestern British Columbia. Nickel-copper sulphides were discovered in ultrabasic rocks on this property in 1923 and the deposits were explored by Pacific Nickel Mines until 1937, then again between 1951 and 1954 by Pacific Nickel Mines and by Newmont Mining Corporation through its subsidiary,Canadian Ore DepositsWestern Nickel. The property was studied by C. E. Cairnes (1) in 1924, by W. E. Cockfield and J. F. Walker (2) in 1933, by H. C. Horwood (3), (4) in 1936 and 1937, and by the writer in 1951 and 1952. Except for a few thousand tons for trial shipments, the property has never been mined. Indicated ore reserves now total somewhat over one million tons averaging about 1.4 per cent nickel and 0.5 per cent copper, with lesser values in precious metals and cobalt.GEOLOGIC SETTINGThe nickeliferous ultrabasic rocks form part of the core of a 15-milewide block of Late Palæozoic metamorphic rocks and Mesozoic intrusives which extend north-south between the coast batholith of British Columbia and the Chelan batholith of Washington. Margins of this block are faulted in part against less metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks largely of Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous age (Geo/. Surv., Canada, Map 737 A, 1942). Serpentinites, suggestive of deep transgressive structure, occur within the block, and also at its east margin along faults which are southern extensions of the regional Yalakom-Fraser River fault zone. Some of the other mineral deposits in the Hope area appear to be spatially related to these major faults.The mineralization at Pacific Nickel occurs almost exclusively within a stock-like mass of ultra basic rocks which mingle with, and partly cut, a larger batholithic mass of genetically related diorites and norites of late Mesozoic age (Figure 1 ). The ultra basic mass consists essentially of fresh, medium-grained hornblendic pyroxenite with peridotitic cores and with a remarkable margin of pegmatitic hornblendite. The most hornblendic rocks appear to be chiefly products of reaction and replacement of the pyroxene and olivine rocks. The mineralization consists of disseminated and massive pyrrhotite, with subordinate pentlandite and chalcopyrite, amongst fresh olivine, bronzite, and, Jess commonly, augite and hornblende. Both the ultrabasics and mineralization are cut by small hornblenditic and dioritic dykes, and by veins and alteration zones."

"LYNN LAKE, in northern Manitoba, has become Canada's second nickel-producing area. The discovery by Sherritt Gordon Mines of nickel ore in an entirely new district was the result of systematic prospecting of a belt of volcanics and sediments situated 100 to 150 miles north of the Company's former copper-zinc mine at Sherridon, Manitoba.Prospecting in this area was begun in 1937 and continued each year until 1941, when Austin McVeigh, a company prospector, found a patch of sulphides on a gabbro outcrop near a small lake named Lynn Lake. Samples from this sulphide indicated nickel and copper in significant amount. In 1943, magnetometer work disclosed a number of weak anomalies in low ground near the discovery. In 1945, staking was followed by geophysical surveys and diamond drilling, which continued through 1947. During this period the A, B, E, EL, and Corebodies were located and partly outlined. The discovery of the high-grade ""EL"" orebody in January 1947 was the turning point in the estabishment of the mine. Subsequent development, including additional exploration on surface and under-ground, evolution of a new metallurgical process, financing, erection of a mining and milling plant, hydro-electric power development, building of a rail line from Sherridon (by Canadian National Railways) and a refinery at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, culminated in August 1954, when the first shipment of nickel left the refinery. This paper, presented at the 1955 Annual General Meeting of the C.l.M. in Toronto, was one of a symposium covering the whole operation."

"The Pine Point area is on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, 510 air miles north of Edmonton and J JO miles south of Yellowknife, N.W.T. The occurrence there of lead and zinc was reported in J 899 by R. Bell (5) of the Geological Survey of Canada, and in the following years several claims were staked and some prospecting was done. In 1928 Atlas Exploration Co. took over the property containing the discovery occurrences. In 1929 The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (""Cominco"") and Ventures Ltd. participated with Atlas in forming the Northern Lead-Zinc Co., which, under the direction of J. M. Bell, carried out 24,499 feet of drilling in the discovery and surrounding areas. Two shafts and many surface pits were also sunk. This work showed that the discovery deposits contain about 500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore, but no new orebody was found.In 1936 D. F. Kidd (11) drew attention to the highly significant space relations between the base-metal discoveries at Pine Point and the projections of certain major Precambrian faults mapped earlier by C. H. Stockwell. Geological work by Cominco in 1940 and subsequent years suggested the presence of mineable deposits within a belt of land including part of the area of earlier field work and extending far beyond it. Between 1946 and 1954 exploration financed by Cominco and Ventures Ltd. included 182,950 feet of diamond drilling, 383 feet of sinking, and 240 feet of drifting, raising, and crosscutting. This work was successful in finding substantial quantities of new ore in places where bedrock is completely concealed.The topography is one of low relief, characterized in many places by swampy muskeg and shallow, marl-bottomed ponds. The area where ore has been found is generally higher ground which, though not well drained, is comparatively dry. It is also marked by raised beaches and a few sand dunes overgrown by small spruce and pine. Bedrock is generally overlain by a variable thickness of hard, glacial boulder clay. This in turn is covered by silt, sand, and gravel, probably deposited from the waters of Great Slave Lake, which formerly extended many miles beyond its present southern shore."

"The Silver Standard mine is 6 miles by road northwest of New Hazelton, B.C., a small town on the northern line of the Canadian National Railways some l 75 miles northeast of Prince Rupert. The deposits lie on the western slope of Glen Mountain (elevation 2,100 feet), with the main adit, mill, and campsite at 1,300 feet. The deposits were found in 1910, shortly after the area had been swept by forest fire and during a period of prospecting activity spurred by the construction of the railway. Crude ore only was shipped until 1918, when a 50-ton gravity mill was built which operated until 1922. Gross value of production of this period, at present metal prices, was about $1,000,000.In 1947 the present company was formed and a 50-ton flotation mill installed. Production from 1948 to 1955 has been in excess of $10,000,000, and net smelter returns about two-thirds of this amount. More than 60 per cent of the production and 80 per cent of the profit have come from one vein, No. 6. On the 1,300-foot level this vein had an ore section 375 feet long and 2.5 feet wide, averaging 0.18 ounces gold, 85 ounces silver, 10 per cent lead, and 16 per cent zinc.The mine workings follow a simple pattern. A series of parallel veins, striking northeast and dipping southeast, are numbered from 0 to 12, starting at the northwest. They lie within a zone trending south 70 degrees east, and the distance between Nos. 0 and 12 veins is about one mile. Recently several cross-veins, dipping northeast, have been found between Nos. 8 and 12. They are apparently of the same type as the others, though they may not have the same structural controls. They could be an important new source of ore.The mine has been developed principally by crosscut adits at the 1,500- and 1,300-foot levels and a 510-foot shaft with levels at I, 150, 1,000, ·and 850 feet. Drifts and crosscuts total 17,000 feet, chiefly on Nos. I, 4, 6, 7, and 8 veins. The drifts are stoped by shrinkage, top shrinkage rill, cut-and-fill with resuing, or open stope methods. The mill produces a lead-silver-gold-copper concentrate and a zinc concentrate, with indicated recovery of more than 96 per cent (4)."

"THE LEAD-ZINC and tungsten mines of Canadian Exploration Ltd are on Iron Mountain, 8 miles south of Salmo, B.C., in the Nelson mining division. Relative location of the mines is shown on the general plan.First recorded lead production was in 1908 from surface outcrops. Small amounts of high lead ore were mined intermittently until 1926. No major lead-zinc production occurred until 1949 when outcroppings on the south side of the mountain were mined and diamond drilling began to prove the existence of a large replacement orebody. Lead-zinc ore has been mined continuously from the Jersey orebodies since March 1949, with monthly tonnage as high as 50,000 tons per month, but currently averaging 30,000 tons per month.Schee1ite-bearing tungsten ore was found in 1942 by H. Lakes in an old adit and open cuts at the north end of the Emerald tungsten orebody. The Emerald tungsten mine was developed by the Federal Government as a Wartime Metals project and operated for eight weeks in the fall of 1943, when the poor demand for tungsten closed the mine. Canadian Exploration Ltd. purchased the mine in 1947 and mined in excess of 100,000 tons in 1947-48 until the demand for tungsten dropped again and interest was centred on lead-zinc. The Federal Government repurchased and reopened the Emerald Mine in 195 L and built a new concentrator. The mine and mill were sold back to Canadian Exploration Ltd. in 1952.Regional Geology and IntrusivesThe host rock for both the lead-zinc and tungsten mineralization is the Laib formation of Lower Cambrian age, which consists of 400 feet of crystalline limestone underlain by beds of argillite, and argillaceous limestone locally altered to ""skarn"" or ""tactite"". The Laib limestone is overlain by black argillite and underlain by the Reno quartzite of Pre- cambrian age. Repetition of folded beds has allowed the interpretation of the large isoclinal fold which repeats the limestone (see general cross-section). Dolomitization and the associated lead-zinc ore have been found only in the right-side-up limestone and are not known in the overturned limestone.Two elongated stocks of granite cut the sediments. The Emerald stock outcrops along the east side of the Emerald tungsten mine and again west of the Jersey workings, while the Dodger stock outcrops only at the north end of the Iron Mountain. The shape and attitude of these bodies are believed to have been governed partly by pre-granite faulting and partly by pre-granite folding of the sediments. Although some forceful intrusion may have occurred the detailed granite surface indicates a gentle stoping emplacement."

In mining, as in other business and engineering enterprises, efficient operation depends upon how well and how quickly the lines of communication can function. Mines have used the telephone on and between levels for many years, but in the hoisting shaft maintenance of physical wire connections for communication with the moving cage or skip has been found, for all practical purposes, impossible. A most natural solution was, therefore, the code-bell or buzzer signal system between fixed levels, and this has been standard practice throughout the mining world for many years. However, this system has serious limitations which make it impossible to signal a cage between levels in the shaft, and it requires crude, hazardous or costly methods for signalling during daily shaft inspection. Radio signalling overcomes these difficulties, because the communication medium is never broken and the cage-tender or shaft inspector can safely signal to, and receive signals from, the hoistman at any time from any position in the shaft, whether stationary or in motion. In addition to both audible and visual code signalling, two-way telephone communication and slack cable alarm are facilities made possible in recent commercially developed equipment.

"THE Mindamar zinc-lead-copper mine, owned by Mindamar Metals Corporation Limited, is at Stirling in Richmond County, near the south-eastern shore of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia (Figure I). It is connected by several roads with the Canadian National railway at Sydney and St. Peters.The deposit is said to have been discovered around 1895 as an outcrop in the bed of Copper brook, but the details are obscure. Not until 1925, when it was optioned by American Cyanamid Company, was it developed underground. Between 1927 and 1938, the 1-nine was operated intermittently by The British Metal Corporation (Canada) Limited, and yielded approximately 200,000 tons of ore averaging about IO per cent zinc, 2 per cent lead, I per cent copper, and small quantities of silver and gold. In December 1950, Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited made an agreement with Mindamar Metaî Corporation Limited, which was exploring the old mine, to assume management and prepare the property for production. Production started in April 1952 with a new mill and a new four-compartment shaft, and between that time and the end of 1954 it has totalled 545,347 tons of ore averaging 5·89 per cent zinc, 1·35 per cent lead, 0·66 per cent copper, 0·032 oz. gold, and 2 151 oz. silver.The Mindamar orebodies are irregular lenses and large veins lying within a wide, almost vertical shear zone of remarkable persistency. The shear zone consists mainly of well-foliated sericite schist derived from siliceous siltstone, and it contains a vast amount of dolomite and magne-site of hydrothermal origin. Most of the ore is extremely fine-grained and some of the high-grade material has a conspicuous thinly layered structure. The metallic minerals, in order of decreasing abundance, are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and tennantite; the gangue minerals, in the same order, are dolomite and magnesite, quartz, sericite, talc, chlorite, barite, albite, and alunite.The geological setting of the deposit is shown in Figure 2. Except along streams and lake shores, almost all of the bedrock is concealed by glacial drift. The group of rocks in which the deposit occurs consists principally of greywacke, siltstone, tuff, brecoia, and Javas, and has been correlated lithologically with the Bourinot group of Middle Cambrian age. A short distance west of the mine, these rocks are in contact along the Stirling fault with conglomerate, arkosic sandstone, and quartzite belonging to the Middle River group of Silurian or Devonian (?) age, which elsewhere in the area overlies the Bourinot group unconformably. The large bodies of granitic rocks in the region, and the large lenticular masses of diorite and quartz diorite associated with them, have been assigned by Weeks (5, pp. 68-69) to the Devonian."

"The Quesabe Mine, owned by Brunston Mines Limited, is a gold deposit in the south central part of Duprat Township, northwestern Quebec, about 10 miles northwest of Noranda.It is one of the few gold mines in Canada developed since World War II. The occurrence of gold in the Quesabe fault structure has been known for many years, but serious exploration did not begin until 1945. By 1949, 15,000 feet of diamond drilling had been completed and a shaft sunk to a depth of 635 feet, with lateral development on the 450 and 600 foot levels. In 1949 and 1950 a new shaft was sunk to 1,050 feet, new levels were established at 800 and 1,000 feet, and ore was mined and shipped to the Noranda smelter. After November 1950 the ore mined was treated in the company's own mill. The grade of ore was marginal under existing economic conditions, and production was suspended in April 1952. The mine produced about 100,000 tons of ore with an average grade of approximately 0.25 ounces of gold per ton.GeologyThe bedrock formations are all Precambrian, and the general geology of the area has been described by W. G. Robinson (1). The rocks in the vicinity of the mine are acidic and basic volcanics of the Keewatin series (andesite, rhyolite, agglomerates, tuffs) invaded by the Flavrian Lake granite stock, and by dykes and irregular masses of intrusive felsite, quartz porphyry, syenite-porphyry, diorite, and lamprophyre.The mine workings are in andesite and felsite, about 2,500 feet west of the western margin of the Flavrian Lake stock.The principal structural feature of the area, from an economic point of view, is the Quesabe fault. This steeply-dipping fault cuts all the rock formations of the area, and has been traced for about 11 miles along a strike of north 65 degrees east from Lake Arnoux in the northeast corner of Dasserat Township to Duprat Lake near the east boundary of Duprat Township."

In the past few years there has been considerable controversy on the most suitable material to be used in ventilation doors which will have to serve also as fire doors. For this reason it was thought useful at Mclntyre to find out to what extent our zinc chloride treated spruce doors were fire resistant and what protection we could expect in case of an underground fire. The doors to be tested were constructed of the same material as that used in our regular ventilation doors underground, namely, 2-inch tongue-and-groove well seasoned spuce. It is to be noted, however, that whereas the dimensions of the ventilation doors are 5 ft. by 6 ft., those of the test doors were only 14 in. by 17½ in. The treated doors were made up from lumber that l1ad been treated with chromated zinc chloride, as described in Mr. Keeley's paper. Two kinds of tests were carried out: a heat test and a flame test. An electric muffle furnace for assaying, equipped with a pyrometer, was used for the beat test, the furnace door being replaced by the wooden door to be tested. In the flame test, the door to be tested formed one end of a rectangular steel box in which was placed a large blow-torch. Air was admitted at the rear of the box. A pyrometer recorded the temperature at the inside surface of the door where flame impinged. The results of the tests are presented in the accompanying table, in which the word 'failed' is to be interpreted as meaning that the door had been damaged to the extent that smoke, but not necessarily flame, issued from its outside surface.

The property of MacLeod-Cockshutt Gold Mines, Limited, is in the Little Long Lac area of the Thunder Bay Mining Division, Ontario, about four miles south of the Canadian National railway station of Geraldton. The town of Geraldton is about 170 miles east of Port Arthur and 22 miles west of Long Lac, which is on the main line of the Canadian National railway. The Trans-Canada highway passes through the property and during the winter season the road is maintained between Port Arthur and Long Lac. Electric power is supplied by the Hydro-Electric Commission of Ontario from their Cameron Falls plant and is distributed at 44,000 volts by a local transformer station. Early History The South orebody was discovered by diamond drilling in the spring of 1936. This is a porphyry contact orebody with major pyrite and minor arsenopyrite mineralization. Some gold is present in the 'free' state, but for the most part it is locked in the pyrite, with little or none in the arsenopyrite. Preliminary test work was based on comparing straight cyanidation with bulk flotation and cyanidation of the concentrates. The overall results by the two methods were found similar, but for economic reasons the flotation-cyanidation process was adopted. Before the mill came into operation, a new and entirely different type of orebody, consisting of massive sulphide lenses in banded iron formation, was discovered to the north of the existing workings. These bodies are an intricate mixture of pyrite and arsenopyrite, both carying gold.
