Underground mines often rely on ore pass systems to ensure the transport of ore and waste. Consequently, it is important to ensure the smooth operation of such systems. Ore pass degradation that may require rehabilitation results in production delays and high operational costs. The occurrence of hang-ups within an ore pass also leads to disruption of ore production. There are important safety concerns when worker intervention is necessary to re-establish material flow in the ore pass. In order to facilitate the design of ore pass systems, mining operations often rely on past experience, or semi empirical guidelines. This paper describes recent efforts to establish a comprehensive database on current practices; encountered operational problems and solutions in ore pass design in Quebec underground mines.

The paper is aimed at mining engineers and other mining practitioners in the metalliferous mining industry who are considering the use of roadheaders and wish to understand the basic geomechanical and operational principles controlling their performance. The paper aims to address metalliferous minersÆ general unfamiliarity with roadheader technology, which is one of the factors which has limited the application of these machines in such mines. The historical development of drag tool mechanical excavation machines is briefly discussed, and factors affecting the application of roadheaders are mentioned. The mechanics of cutting with drag tools is then reviewed as are the effects of these and tool wear on tool performance. The implications of tool performance to roadheader performance are mentioned, the potential benefits of high pressure waterjet assistance are discussed and the relative performances of different tool types and materials are compared. Roadheader performance factors including productivity and utilisation are mentioned, and the state-of-the-art of conventional roadheaders is discussed in the context of machine weight, power and cutting head configuration. The influence of these and rock strength on machine productivity is analysed. Alternative, developing technologies are discussed which may extend the effective use of mechanical excavation into stronger rock masses which are beyond the range of conventional roadheaders. Finally, conclusions on these discussions are presented, along with recommendations for continuing research and development.

Rock Discontinuities ("joints") affect blasting results. An investigation was carried out to understand if blast parameter such as spacing needs to be altered with the change in joint direction. Small scale laboratory studies in jointed limestone blocks have been carried out. It is shown that optimum spacing is variable with the "joint" orientations. Evidence is presented from field studies in four limestone quarries supporting laboratory studies. Reasons for success and failure of widespacing technique is also provided. Only with suitable orientations of "joints: widespacing is successful.

Mount Leyshon is an open cut-heap leaching operation that commenced production in early 1987. Open pit reserves are 6.3 m.t. grading 1.8 g/t Au and 4.8 g/t Ag and expected annual production is 68,000 oz. of gold. Gold mineralisation is hosted in breccias, porphyry plugs and basement rocks interpreted as the roots of a multi-phase Permian phreatomagmatic breccia complex. Mineralisation has the form of veins, cavity fillings and disseminations and is localised by late stage trachytic dikes and sills and dike-like bodies of milled breccia in the northwest corner of the complex. The sequence of mineralisation includes: I quartz-chalcopyrite-molybdenite stockwork veins and pyrite-gold veins with potassic alteration II quartz-chlorite-carbonate-basemetal sulphide-gold veins and cavity fillings with sericitic alteration III quartz-basemetal sulphide-bismuth-sulphide -electrum veins, veinlets and dissemin- ations with sericitic alteration. Mineralisation is interpreted to have formed at 500-300¦C from a predominantly magmatic hydrothermal system related to the porphyry intrusive bodies. Mount Leyshon is a phreatomagmatic breccia with a very different origin to the Kidston magmatic hydrothermal breccia. However the mineralisation style and origin is quite similar.

The requirement to use explosives in ground temperatures exceeding 50¦C is becoming more common as mines work to maximise the recovery of their resources. Orica Explosives was requested to assist in the development and implementation of æhot blastingÆ safe working procedures at Liddell Coal Open Cut in the Hunter Valley. The mine operator, Hunter Valley Earthmoving (HVE), had to contend not only with elevated temperatures in their overburden resulting from burning coal beneath, but also old underground workings which tended to exacerbate the problem. The paper discusses the following issues:the consultative process that was used to develop the procedures employed to ensure the process could be carried out safely; the technical issues surrounding blasting in hot ground, including temperature monitoring, product selection, application and design to ensure safety and performance were maintained; the need for confidence and trust in the team that was working together in a potentially hazardous environment, the emotive issues that were encountered and how they were addressed; the value of a regular review process combined with open and honest communication to ensure the procedures represented best practice and that all stakeholders understood the process; and the value delivered to Liddell Coal when sterilised areas of coal became accessible with little disruption to the mining process. The paper also discusses the challenges that were encountered in the Reservoir Block where proximity to major power lines and rail infrastructure meant that hot blasting procedures had to also consider vibration limits and the need for Energy Australia to disconnect the power.

In order to correctly predict the performance of beneficiation processes, such as hydrocycloning or ultrasonic treatment of iron ore fines, it is important to understand possible changes in size distribution, mineral composition and textural peculiarities. During beneficiation processes, iron ore can be subjected to various physical actions which may result in changes in size distribution. In the case of soft or friable ores, attritioning and/or deagglomeration may have a significant effect on both separation performance and product stream specifications. Optical image analysis tools, which give statistical information on a particle by particle basis, can help in better understanding the response of the ores to these processes. An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the response of a haematitic-goethitic iron ore to a combination of stirring and ultrasonic treatment. The effect of stirring and ultrasonic treatment on the size and mineral distribution has been quantified using image analysis and automatic ore texture classification. This approach has been applied to several size coarse fractions of the initial feed and product. The results show that, following treatment, the mass proportion of ore texture classes which contained higher amounts of ochreous goethite and kaolinite had significantly decreased compared with that in the feed, while the proportion of texture classes where haematite was the major mineral had increased. Liberation analysis also showed a significant increase in the proportion of particles with more than 95 per cent haematite and vitreous goethite.

ZINIFEX Century Mine is a zinc, lead and silver concentrate producer. Flotation is the primary method of minerals separation in this circuit. The flotation circuit is quite large with 79 flotation cells. The levels in each of these interconnected cells are controlled at more than 45 level control stations. Due to the multivariable interaction throughout the circuit, good level control was found to be difficult to achieve by just using normal Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control. As a first step in advanced process control, the FloatStar Level Stabiliser, a multivariable controller developed specifically for flotation circuits, has been commissioned at Century mine to solve the level control problems. The first section of this paper therefore discusses and shows the results and improvements obtained by using the FloatStar level stabiliser. The results and benefits of the FloatStar Flow Optimiser are discussed in the second section of this paper.

A new 2.5D airborne electromagnetic (AEM) algorithm has been developed by Intrepid Geophysics and Jovan Silic & Associates. The advantage of 2.5D (2D geology, 3D source) AEM inversion in 3D geological mapping applications and identification of conductive drilling targets, compared to the more commonly used conductivity-depth imaging (CDI) transforms or 1D inversions, are demonstrated using examples from banded iron formations (BIFs) and other geological settings. We show emerging AEM systems are capable of providing estimates of economic rock unit thicknesses, dips and fault definition at an accuracy that mitigates the need for pattern drilling.The 2.5D inversion application used in this work and described in Silic et al (2015) is a substantially changed version of ArjunAir (Wilson, Raiche and Sugeng, 2006), a product of CSIRO/AMIRA project P223F. The changes include a new forward model algorithm and a new inversion solver. The application enables the accurate simulation of 3D source excitation for full domain models inclusive of topography, non-conforming boundaries and very high resistivity contrasts. Solution is accurate for a geoelectrical cross-section, which is relatively constant along a strike length that exceeds the AEM system footprint.The major innovation includes a new inversion solver with adaptive regularisation, which allows the incorporation of a misfit to the reference model and the model smoothness function.Memory usage has been dramatically reduced and is estimated prior to execution. For speed the software has been parallelised using Intel message passing interface (MPI) and can be used on standard computing hardware or computing clusters. Data from survey lines with lengths exceeding 100 km can be inverted on high end laptop computers.We allow flexibility in the selection of components and in the estimation of noise.AEM inversion examples are shown for surveys from BIFs, base metals (volcanogenic massive sulfides) and geological mapping projects and the results are compared with known geology and drilling. The New South Wales coal industry is a highly mechanised well organised industry which has developed from an annual production of slightly less than 13 million tons in 1950 to over 33 million tons in 1969. Although continuous miners were not introduced into the mines until 1950, by June 1969 the percentage of coal won by these units was 87.3. The paper describes mining conditions in the various coalfields of the State, their complexities and problems and how these have been dealt with. The introduction of fully mechanised longwall faces has presented a challenge which has been accepted and descriptions of systems in use are discussed. Major expansion of the industry is anticipated to meet the requirements of the growing Australian steel industry, for local power generation and to meet the increasing demands of overseas markets.

Four field test plots were constructed in 1998 on a sloped waste rock surface at the Myra Falls Operations of Boliden Westmin (Canada) Limited to evaluate hydraulic performance of alternate cover system designs. The field test plot cover systems were designed to control oxygen ingress and water infiltration to the underlying waste rock while providing a medium for a grass and legume vegetation cover. The test plots consisted of a bare waste rock surface (control plot), and three additional plots consisting of native compacted till placed directly on the waste rock surface, overlain by non-compacted till. Two of the test plots included a compacted till layer ameliorated with flyash and bentonite, respectively, to improve moisture retention and reduce permeability. The third test plot consisted of a compacted layer of native till overlain by non-compacted till. A performance monitoring system was installed in each test plot to evaluate net percolation and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock. In addition, each test plot has profiles of matric suction, water content, and temperature sensors installed at up-slope and down slope locations. A review of four years of monitoring data shows that the compacted till/bentonite cover system has been most successful in limiting the infiltration of meteoric waters and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock material. The compacted till/flyash and compacted till cover systems have produced similar net percolation results and neither have functioned well in maintaining an oxygen ingress layer throughout the year. The amelioration of bentonite with till to produce a compacted barrier layer shows promise in reducing water and oxygen ingress at the MFO site, while the incorporation of flyash with the till did not result in a significant increase in performance. The field performance data clearly demonstrates the need for developing field trials prior to full-scale construction, as opposed to relying solely on an un-calibrated numerical modelling to design the full-scale cover system.

The direct smelting of zinc sulfide con- centrates has been investigated by an extensive series of computer-based thermodynamic equili- brium calculations. The study covers both pure 7.n-S-O-C-N systems and practical concentrate- coal-air-flux systems. It is shown that for a zinc concentrate containing iron and lead sul- tide impurities, a 97% yield of zinc vapour with autogenous operation can be obtained under carefully optimized conditions. The possible integration of this process with existing zinc condensation and recovery processes is Discussed.

Dust suppression is an important environmental control in most mining operations. The poorest quality water within a mine site is often used for dust suppression since it provides an effective means of reducing the volume of poor quality water. The ultimate fate of contaminants or salinity associated with water used in dust suppression is important to consider for optimising water management and assessing the environmental impact and life span and maintenance requirements of roads associated with dust suppression.The propensity for remobilisation of contaminants or salts depends on a range of factors such as the application rate, climate, road construction, water chemistry and soil geochemistry. This paper describes a typical study approach which could be used to assess the short- and long-term impacts of mine water application for dust suppression. The steps of the study are: reviewing the environmental setting, estimating water requirements for dust suppression, reviewing source water chemistry, developing a mass balance model and assessing the mobility and fate of contaminants with a geochemical model.This approach identifies which salt species are likely to form and whether they are prone to remobilisation. It is possible to quantitatively assess the risk of exporting contaminants or salt from roads and to refine the dust suppression strategy to minimise the environmental risk. The approach can be applied at mine sites to address regulator concerns, aid decision-making and improve the understanding of short- and long-term environmental risks.CITATION:Gimber, C, 2013. Operations at the Mount Bonnie gold/silver project are described. The project is based on the gossan of a stratiform and stratabound polymetallic sulphide deposit. The gossan contains approx- imately 100 000 tonne of ore grading 8g/tonne Au and 230g/tonne Ag. This is mined in an open cut, and transported to a stockpile area lkm away, from which it is fed to the treat- ment plant. The ore is crushed through two stages and fed to a fine ore storage shed, from which it is reclaimed, milled and cyanide leached in draft tube agitators. The pulp is filtered using a horizontal belt filter to recover a pregnant solution. Silver sulphide is precipitated using sodium sulphide solution, and collected as a mixed sulphide/precoat concentrate on a drum filter. The solution is then passed through carbon columns where the gold is adsorbed and is subsequently recovered by methanol desorption using a process developed by Micron Research, and electrowinning. Modifications to the treatment plant circuit based on operational experience are Described.

When ore is being selected from a regularised block model, a common procedure is to accept as ore any block whose iron content exceeds a cut-off value, and whose content in each contaminant analyte is below an appropriate cut-off value. This method defines a quadrant within the multidimensional analyte space, such that any block lying within the quadrant is accepted as ore and any block lying outside the quadrant is rejected as waste. The cut-off levels can be adjusted to maximise ore tonnage at a target grade (or analyte vector). When the method is applied to a project comprising multiple pits with systematically differing grades, it is found that ore tonnage at target grade is maximised if different cut-off quadrants are used for the different pits. This is apparently illogical, because it implies that an ore block from one pit may be accepted as ore, but an identical block from another pit is rejected as waste, even when ore from both pits is to be blended into the same product and there are no production cost differences between the pits. The paradox is an example of the ætheory of the second bestÆ: if there are multiple conditions for optimality and one condition is broken, then obeying the other conditions may not be the best policy. The problem lies with the quadrant cut-off method, which is shown to be inconsistent even for selecting ore from a single pit. A criterion that is inconsistent cannot be optimal. It is shown that a linear composite cut-off function provides maximum ore tonnage, and that a single composite cut-off criterion is consistent and optimal over multiple pits. Further, it is shown that a composite cut-off function not only maximises ore tonnage at a specified composition, but also can be used to select ore so as to maximise project value, if marginal costs and values are available.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2013. To follow the development of the central crushing plant it is necessary briefly to outline the history of the Lake View and Star Limited. This Company, when first constituted, took over the properties of the Lake View Consols, Hannan's Star, and Chaffers Gold Mines.The Company then treated the ore won from these leases at two dry crushing, all-roasting plants, situated adjacent to each other on the site of the present Chaffers Treatment Plant that handles all the ore won by the Lake View and Star Ltd.SUbsequent to the initial union of the three companies mentioned, the Ivanhoe Gold Corporation and the Golden Horse Shoe Ltd. were absorbed. Still later, and after the original crushing plant was erected, the Associated Gold Mines of Australia were purchased.A very extensive development policy was adopted by the Company's management in the late 1920's, and as the underground programme progressed, it became eVident that a large treatment plant would be required. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Base metal sulfides at the Currawong volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit in the Lachlan fold belt of Victoria, south-east Australia, were formed in the late Silurian, but D2 deformation of the deposit in the Devonian Bindian orogeny was responsible for structural repetition that created the resource. The primary sulfide lenses were stacked by reverse-sense shear zones within a volcano-sedimentary sequence dominated by dacitic intrusions and turbidites. Shear zones were localised along lithological contacts, including the margins of the sulfide lenses. The competent dacitic intrusions did not fold during D2; folding was restricted to the packages of metasedimentary rocks. Overturning occurs within, but not between, the metasedimentary packages. The overall geometry of the deposit is that of a duplex, but the detailed shape does not conform to idealised duplex types, probably because of post-D2 deformation. A significant complicating factor for understanding the deposit, and for resource evaluation, is the dramatic variation in deposit geometry along strike, which may also be due to post-D2 deformation. Petroleum exploration in onshore Gippsland was directed in the 1950s and 1960s towards plays in the basal Latrobe and Strzelecki Groups, but these became forgotten in the 1970s with the Latrobe play discoveries offshore. The principal explorationists of the time were Woodside Oil and Arco Ltd, who then departed the scene after drilling some 18 wells without major success. In the late-1980s successful hydrocarbon finds in equivalent age Otway Group sediments in the Otway Basin were made and in early 1990 Tyers Petroleum began investigations into Strzelecki Group prospects as applied to the onshore Gippsland Basin. Some 18 anticlines have been mapped, based on shallower coal exploration drilling in the Latrobe Group, which from seismic and gravity evidence are believed to unconformably overlie similar anticlinal structures in the underlying Strzelecki Group. Strzelecki targets of interest within drilling depth are the basal Tyers Conglomerate/Rintouls Creek Sandstone Formations which outcrop in the north of the Latrobe Valley and are analogous to the Pretty Hill Sandstone in the Otway Basin. In addition, intra-Strzelecki Group targets similar to Heathfield and Windermere Sandstone Members are also considered to be present. Good source rocks are abundant including coal seams and carbonaceous sediments of Neocomian and Jurassic age, which lie within the oil window. Seal is provided by the overlying Aptian-Albian aged volcanogenic sediments. The Tyers/Rintouls sandstones - a target in the Woodside/Arco wells, with two exceptions, were not reached. Encouraging intra-Strzelecki shows were reported in many of the wells. Basal and intra-Strzelecki porous quartzose sandstones remain one of the few untested plays left in the Gippsland Basin and, in the onshore, merit extra attention as they he within the oil window at economically drillable depths.

The Palmer River rises in the Windsor Tablelands area of the Paleozoic Hodgkinson Basin, 110 kilometres northwest of Cairns. It flows west across the Palmerville Fault and Proterozoic Dargalong Metamorphics to the Mitchell River. East of the Palmerville Fault, its course lies immediately south of the onlapping Mesozoic Laura Basin conglomerates, sandstones and siltstones.Gold occurs in quartz reefs in the Hodgkinson rocks of the Maytown District, in narrow quartz veins in the Dargalong Metamorphics, in the basal conglomerates of the Mesozoic, and more importantly, in alluvial bars within the Palmer River.

The centrifugal elevator invented and patented by the writer is designed for the purpose of conveying the tailings of a gold dredge to such a distance that it shall not impede the dredging opperations. Formerly this was usually accomplished by means of a belt of buckets travelling round a ladder set at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, but this meant heavy wear and tear on the travelling buckets and the tumblers actuating them. The centrifugal elevator throws the tailings through the air to the required height and distance and it is manifest that during their flight from the elevator to the heap there is absolutely no wear and tear, only the attraction of gravity and the resistance of the air has to be overcome. All then there is left to he considered is how to throw the stuff with the minimun of prower and wear on the elevator.The elevator consists of a cam-shaped steel casting with a disc of mild steel plate on either side: These side plates project a few inches beyond the tips of the beaters, in order to prevent odd stones from straying in an undesired direction; they serve also to prevent extra large stones from reaching the beaters, for they slide off the rims into the water.

This subject of paramount importance in many modern plants employed in the extraction of gold from ores by cyanidation, involves several considerations.With the old-type "slimes decantation" process, using several tanks of large dimension, installed at high capital cost, it was frequently possible to obtain good settlement over a protracted period, but the disability of indifferent response to subsequent filtration and washing of the residual pulp, after decantation of the supernatant pregnant solution, was often present.In modern cyanidation practice, the tendency is to reduce capital expenditure by continuous processing of the ore pulp in a plant of less volume, but capable of handling more tonnage through-put and yielding, coincidently, less residual dissolved gold in the final pulp residues.INHIBITORY FACTORS.These involve a study of the effect of the circuit water or solution employed in milling and treatment, the amount of "primary" slime occurring in the ore broken underground, the constitution of the "walls" underground, the inherent occurrence of colloidal slime in partially decomposed ore, and the presence of kaolinised and ferruginous clayey structures carrying payable infiltrations of gold values, to mention some of the troubles encountered in practice.
