A technique for collecting and analyzing the small quantities of gases desorbed on heating metal powders has been developed. The gases collected from copper powders of various types of manufacture have been analyzed and found to contain H2O, CO2, and SO2. The quantities of gas evolved vary from 0.05 to 1.0 milliliter, under standard con-ditons of temperature and pressure, per gram of powder. The source of the gas has been traced to surface films on the powder. IN the powder-metal industry it is recognized that the presence of gases in the powders affects the processing and resulting properties of the sintered product. Several sources for these gases are possible; namely, chemical reactions with the sintering atmospheres, inclusion. of gases during compacting, dissolved gases in the metal powder, and sorbed gases on the metal-,powder surfaces.1, 2, 3 Since the quantities of the gases are relatively small, no direct attempt has been made to collect and analyze them nor to isolate their source. The work that has been done has been concerned with the dimensional stability of the product., its porosity, density, or mechanical and physical properties. Conclusions are drawn on the basis of studies of this type as to the probable effect of gases on these properties. 4, 5, 0 In the present investigation an attempt has been made to obtain quantitative data on the analysis and quantities of gases associated with copper powders manufactured in different ways. Apparatus was constructed to collect gases evolved from loosely packed powder samples on heating to various temperatures under a reduced pressure of helium. The powders were outgassed thoroughly in a vacuum prior to starting the collection operation in order to eliminate mechanically entrapped gases and to prevent the possible reaction of the powder with these gases. Experimental Procedures Materials—The major portion of the investigation was carried out on a single heat of water-atomized, oxygen-free, high-conductivity copper. A relatively coarse fraction of this powder, 20 to 100 mesh, was tested as a mixed powder and as various graded size fractions. THE writer of this article has not attempted to write a technical paper; on the contrary, he has tried to express in "steel-plant English," for steel men, a viewpoint drawn from his practice and experience. It is not his thought that it shall be taken as the "last word" in the making of this class of steel, or that good rimming steel cannot be made by any other practice. The paper was written to serve as the basis of a discussion from which it is hoped much benefit may be derived. The paper deals only with rimming steel made by the open-hearth process, and with the lower carbon steels, such as sheet and tin bar, rivet stock, skelp, etc., although good rimming steel as high as 40 to 50 carbon can be made by having good open slags and giving proper attention to working and tapping temperatures.

September 1981 I'm here today to report on a revolution -- a revolution in the way the Federal Government looks at energy. I'm not talking about a simple change in the relative emphasis on sources -- such as more recognition for coal and nuclear power, with less rhetoric about "soft- technology." Nor am I describing a mere change in focus -- from the demand side to the supply side. And I am not referring exclusively to our obvious goal of budget cuts. No, I'm here to discuss a fundamental change in Federal direction -- one that started as soon as President Reagan was inaugurated, and one that is articulated in the National Energy Policy Plan he sent to Congress in July. That brief policy document was backed up by three volumes of supporting data; but I think I can catch it's flavor for you in just three phrases: * First, various energy forms complete with each other and complement one another. * Second, fair competition among them (which includes honest pricing) will give us the best "energy mix." • And, finally there may be ligitimate arguments about where Federal responsibility in regard to energy spills over into Federal interference; but it's about time we drew the distinction -- and eliminated the latter. This Administration's national energy policy is quite different from any we have had in recent years. It is tuned to human nature and changing times. We are seeking the best practical solutions in the energy -a lot better than the ones we have been offered before, but still something less than perfection. One way we do that is by counting on a fully informed public to guide it's own destiny. And, instead of treating energy as an isolated entity, we recognize it as part of the overall economy. The President's Program for Economic Recovery is as much a factor in energy policy as the specific actions of the Department of Energy. One striking difference from the past energy policy 1s that this policy plan does not say: "In 1985 we will -produce so many hundreds of millions of tons of coal: . . . or . . . "By the end of this century the Nation will be deriving X percent of it's electricity from wind generators." Unfortunately, targets like these are what many people have come to expect from the Federal Government -- and what they think of as energy policy, whether the figures hold up in the long run or not. But . . . think about it! Nether the Department of Energy nor any other part of the Federal Government produces coal, or mines uranium, or manufactures solar collectors. There are only a few sections of the country where the Federal Government generates and sells electricity. So it does not take any great insight to recognize that the amount of energy we will produce or consume as a Nation In the future depends on many factors beyond direct government action. And those future totals cannot be predicted precisely, anyway -- by the Government or by anybody else. According to our way of thinking, the choices should be up to the people. When the free market works within a healthy economy, individuals express their preferences in the marketplace -- adjusting the balance of all energy factors continually in a way that no computer could be programmed to reflect perfectly. So, instead of having the Government issue a rigid set of numerical goals, our main concern simply is that there be enough energy. We want the Nation itself to decide how much that should be, what form it should take, and how that energy should reach consumers. The marketplace decides. Considering the recent past, this is indeed a revolutionary idea. It has some pitfalls, and we won't reach this ideal of free choice overnight. But that is where we are headed. And I'll offer some evidence in a few minutes that the policy has already started working. First, let me give you some of it's highlights: 1) Nobody who appreciates the philosophical underpinnings of this Administration will be surprised that the energy policy shows faith In domestic energy production and the supply side of the economy; but it also recognizes the important role of energy conservation -- the wise and efficient use of energy resources.

The Gabbs magnesite-brucite deposit is unique in size and is one of two magnesite deposits being exploited in the United States. It is near the town of Gabbs, which is one hundred miles southeast of Reno, in west-central Nevada. The brucite was discovered in 1927; the magnesite was found while exploring the brucite. During World War II, more than 80,000 tons of magnesium metal was produced from about 900,000 tons of magnesite ore mined from these deposits. An additional 5,000,000 tons of magnesite and 1,000,000 tons of brucite have been produced for use in making magnesia refractories and chemicals. Basic Inc., presently the only producer, mines 1.5 ± 0.25 million tons of ore and waste annually using high-selective open-pit rriethods; the ore is up-graded, calcined, and processed into a variety of products. Known reserves of highgrade (less than 5 per cent CaO) magnesite ore total more than 25,000,000 tons, and there are larger tonnages of lower-grade material; brucite reserves are small. The magnesite and brucite are in generally west-dipping dolomite of the upper member of the late Triassic Luning Formation, in the over-riding plate of the Paradise thrust fault. A great variety of dikes and a stock of Cretaceous granodiorite intrude the Luning Formation in the vicinity of the magnesite-brucite deposit. The magnesite bodies are scattered over an area of about a square mile around a prong of granodiorite which extends north from the stock. The brucite is mainly in two bodies in contact with the prong of granodiorite; at the surface and along deeper cracks the brucite has weathered to hydromagnesite and artinite. In the area of magnesite-brucite mineralization, much of the dark, fine-grained, schistose, regionally-metamorphosed dolomite of the Luning Formation has been marmorized to a lighter-colored, coarser-grained, massive dolomite that is intergrown in varying proportions with the magnesite. The magnesite and marmorized dolomite can not be distinguished visually. In addition to the two varieties of dolomite, the gangue in the magnesite and brucite bodies mainly is the various varieties of dike rock, serpentine and a variety of other "contact" minerals, and "post-ore" dolomite and calcite. The magnesite ( and recrystallized dolomite) is believed to have formed by the hydrothermal replacement of the regionally metamorphosed sedimentary dolomite; alternatively it has been suggested that the magnesite is sedimentarv and formed contemporaneously with the dolomite in an embayment of the Triassic sea. Because all the igneous rocks exposed in the immediate vicinity of the magnesite deposits appear to be younger than the magnesite, the ore-forming solutions are thought to be related to a somewhat older granite which crops out elsewhere in the area. The brucite is the result of contact-metasomatic replacement of magnesite during the emplacement of the granodiorite stock.

In the course of the preparation of my paper on " The Occurrence and Treatment of the Argentiferous Manganese Ores of Tombstone District, Arizona" (Dam., xvii., 767), my attention was called to two patents which have been issued for the use of a diaphragm at the upper end of a Howell furnace, whose importance merits more than a passing reference. Mr. J. K. Pardee invented and first put into use in the Algon quin mill, at Philipsburg, Mon., in 1880, a ('new' and useful im provement in rotary ore-roasting furnaces," which was intended "to increase the capacity, effectiveness and working economies of such furnaces." The following description and accompanying figures are taken from the patent papers, dated December 21st, 1880: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the feed-end of the Howell rotary furnace, with parts broken away, the better to exhibit my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same, showing a modification of my invention. In operating a furnace of this kind, of the capacity of one ton of ore an hour, it was found that for the best work the two fire-places (one at each end of the revolv ing cylinder) consumed about ten cords of wood every twenty-four hours, and that about twenty-fonr tons of silver-ore were introduced through the feed-pipe. It was also found that of the amount of ore, fully one-third did not go through the revolv ing cylinder, but went into the dust-chanibers about the feed-end of the furnace or cylinder, and this ore going into the dust-chambers was found not to be sufficiently chloridized for amalgamation, but had to be re-roasted. I then caused to be made, out of boiler-plate iron, a segment of a circle, the height of which was about one third of the diameter of. the cylinder or furnace, the circumference of the circle being smaller than the circumference of the furnace, so that about a half-inch space would be left between the plate and the furnace, when said plate or segment was in position. This segment or plate of iron was then fastened to the bottom of the feed pipe, as shown in the drawings, wherein A represents the revolving cylinder or furnace; B, the fire-place and dust-chambers at the feed-end of said furnace; C, the inclined feed-pipe, and D, the diaphragm, partition, or plate fixed within said furnace, A. With the diaphragm or plate, D, in the position shown, the furnace was run for about a month, and it was found that with the furnace in best working condition only four cords of wood every twenty-four hours were consumed, that no fire was required at the feed-end of the furnace, that not one-twelfth of the ore

One who has been trained in belief in the law of supply and demand and its effect upon prices finds it difficult to adjust himself to the minute regulations imposed by the New Deal, and also to the bewildering changes of government policy as expressed within a short period of time between the antitrust laws and the N.R.A., and later by the Bituminous Coal Conservation Act of 1935. A survey of the coal industry since the World War, both in this country and Great Britain, however, shows that regulation of some sort is needed if any stabilization is to be achieved and if the wage structure and economic welfare of the many communities dependent solely upon coal are to be maintained. Let us look at what has happened to the industry since 1920, which can be considered as the end of the period affected by the war influence. This discussion will be confined solely to bituminous coal, although many of the general conditions are equally applicable to anthracite, the position of which now is at least as bad as that of the softer variety. Since 1920—to the end of 1934—the production of coal has decreased from 568.7 million to 358.4 million tons, or 37 per cent; the number of mines from 14,766 to 6,258, or 58 per cent; the average annual production per mine has changed from 38,512 to 57,425 tons, or 50 per cent. The number of large mines has increased considerably, and the number of men employed has decreased from 639,547 to 458,011, a reduction of 28 per cent, while the average output per employee has changed from 4.0 to 4.4 tons, or an increase of 10 per cent. The average price per ton of coal at the mine has varied from $3.75 to $1.75. During that time wages decreased largely until 1933 and since that time have increased, until now the rates paid are considerably above those in other occupations, although the actual yearly earnings are low, because of part-time work. From 1920 to the signing of the Jacksonville wage agreement in 1924, about two-thirds of the men were union members and practically all of the nonunion mines were south of the Ohio River; with the fixing of the high wage scale of that agreement, which soon proved to be an uneconomic one, many of the mines found that they could not retain their business, so gradually changed to nonunion. IIT Research Institute has investigated the potential of high pressure water jets for rapid rock excavation. During this study, an attempt was made to correlate the extent of breakage effected to the mechanical properties of rocks. Six rock types were used in these experiments and nine properties were determined for each rock variety. A regression equation using the two most significant rock properties and one jet parameter (pressure) was established. Although tests were conducted to specific pressures of 35, no minimum in the specific energy consumption was noted.

EXPLANATIONS of the basic procedure for making earth-conductivity studies by the Eltran method have already appeared in several places.1,2,3 In its essentials, this method consists of applying step functions of voltage to one pair of earth grounds and measuring the transient potential resulting at a separate pair of ground points. As previously pointed out,4 the transient potential resulting from a suddenly applied steady voltage is the indicial transfer function of Carson,5 which has been extensively studied in network theory. [ ] The discussion here, with one special exception, will ignore the problem of how the physical configuration of the earth affects the transient response voltage; it appears that this phase of the problem has been solved in only a few special cases having any direct bearing on the prospecting problem. Entirely distinct from the potential theory aspect of the conductivity problem is the interesting material that can be had from studying the well-known network relations between cause and effect in linear circuits, and thus deducing criteria for the application of the several experimental methods available. To do this, only one assumption need be made about the nature of the earth. The earth is to be considered a linear conductor within the tolerance of ordinary measurements. The discussion will be restricted to collinear electrode configuration like that of Fig. I, since this is the only type of spread practical for use with driving currents that vary with time. Here one pair of grounds carries the driving current, and in line with these and external to them is a [ ] pair of potential probes. The problem will be to consider the relation between the different voltages appearing between the potential circuit terminals when various types of driving voltage sources are inserted in the current circuit. Suppose that the grounding points G1 and G2 make good contact with the earth, and that a battery of sufficient voltage to produce one ampere of direct current is introduced into the current circuit by the closing of a switch. The potential transient response to such a voltage can be measured by taking an oscillogram at the potential circuit terminals, giving the time function that has been called A(t).4 This time function has been solved for analytically in the case of a homogeneous earth,6,7 and the

The use of the centrifuge for dewaxing lubricating oils grew out of the effort to secure better results than had been attained by the common "cold settling" process. This process was the only known method for dewaxing steam refined cylinder stock (600" F. fire test), the product known as "bright stock" being commonlyused for building up "pressed," i.e., dewaxed neutrals of, say, 200-sec. viscosity [to a higher value. The process consisted of mixing the cylinder stock with approximately one and one-half times its volume of naphtha, heating, to dissolve completely all the oil and wax and then slowly chilling to about 15" F. in large insulated tanks. This caused the wax to precipitate. It was allowed to settle out by gravity. The supernatant liquid was then drawn off and the naphtha distilled off, leaving a still residue of bright stock. The sediment from the settling, of a slushy nature, was withdrawn. After removing the naphtha by distillation the residue was petrolatum. At some point in the process, preferably after the dilution but before chilling, the mixture was decolored by percolation through fuller's earth. The finished bright stock produced by this process had a cold test of about 50" F. Efforts to improve this by chilling to a lower temperature resulted in a considerable reduction in yield, and increased uncertainty of settling. Even when chilling to 15" F. it was not uncommon to find that after a week's waiting a tank had not settled. It was then necessary to heat and rechill. This uncertainty was a serious problem; in one case a refinery superintendent had men riveters hold pneumatic hammers against the tank for hours, hoping thus to cause agglomeration and settling of the wax. Yields of bright stock above 70 per cent, were uncommon. History of Centrifugal Application It is not surprising, therefore, that many attempts were made to improve upon the results obtained by cold settling. George H. Between 250°and 550°C in oxygen pressures of 10 to 760 mm Hg, the relative oxide thicknesses formed per unit time on the (100), (111), (110), and (320), decreased in this order. The predominant oxide orientation was (001)Fe3O4 and [110] Fe304 A small amount of a-Fe2O3 which exhibited a fiber pattern was observed in all oxides except those formed at 250°c in low oxygen pressures. IN order to understand the properties and behavior of thin films, particularly their role in oxidation reactions, there is needed more experimental information on their structure, composition, and kinetics of formation on clean surfaces of known geometry. The present study was undertaken to obtain such information for thin oxide films formed on single crystals of a body centered cubic metal, iron. Crystals in the form of spheres were used in order to expose all possible crystal planes to the reactant gases simultaneously. Using this procedure the relative rates of oxidation of all planes could be estimated, and those exhibiting, maximum or minimum oxidation rates could be selected for a more intensive study of composition and expitaxy. Since the three types of information were obtained from the same experiment using a single crystal substrate, any differences between rate, composition, and expitaxy on the several planes may be attributed to the influence of the substrate structure. EXPERIMENTAL The starting material for this study was Armco iron rods, 6 in. long and 3/8 or 1/2 in. in diam. The analysis was reported to be 99.8 pct Fe, with major impurities listed as carbon 0.018 pct, manganese 0.027 pct, phosphorous 0.005 pct, sulfur 0.029 pct, silicon 0.005 pct, and copper 0.11 pct. These rods were cleaned with ether and heated in an atmosphere of moist hydrogen at 950°C for three days. The purpose of this treatment was to decarburize the iron and to provide a consistent, uniform grain size for the growth of single crystals. Crystals in the form of rods, up to 1/2 in. in diam and 2 in. long, were prepared by a method similar to that reported by Leidheiser and Buck.2 Spherical crystals, 3/8 and 1/2 in. in diam and having a handle about 1/4 in. in diam by 112 in. long, were machined from the single-crystal rods. After machining, each crystal was etched in aqueous nitric acid to remove the cold-worked metal at the surface. Before each experiment, the crystal was polished mechanically with metallographic papers through number 4/0, and electropolished in a perchloric acid-acetic anhydride mixture by the method of Jacquet and Rocquet.3 The crystal was washed in running distilled water for at least 5 min. The excess water was blotted with a soft paper tissue, and the crystal was placed in an all-glass reaction vessel (See Fig. 1). The crystal was heated at 550°C in hydrogen for at least 8 hr prior to the oxidation in order to reduce any surface oxides and to help relieve any stresses in the metal. For the structure and composition studies, flat faces were cut parallel to (loo), (111), and (110) planes on the iron crystal spheres. The orientation of these faces was checked by a back-reflection X-ray diffraction technique. The faces were within 2 deg of the desired orientation. The flat faces were treated as described above except that prior to electropolishing they were given an additional polish on metallographic felt saturated with twenty-minute levigated alumina. After the crystal was heated in hydrogen for at least 8 hr, the temperature was adjusted to the desired value, and the hydrogen was evacuated. Commercial oxygen which had been purified by successively passing through tubes containing magnesium perchlorate, Ascarite and magnesium perchlorate was admitted to the desired pressure as measured by a mercury manometer. A resistance-wound furnace surrounded the oxidation chamber, and a temperature controller maintained the temperature within ±3°C. The furnace was provided with a small window for observing the crystal. The changes in thickness of the oxide films were followed by observing the interference colors. The oxidation was allowed to proceed until the desired oxide thickness was attained on a given crystal plane. The experiment was terminated by evacuating the oxidation

Mining employment in the United States declined from 986,000 employees in 1948 to about 600,000 employees today. This has occurred even though the Index of Physical Volume of Mineral Production (1957-59=100) has increased from 88 to 111 and the value of mineral production measured in constant(1957-59) dollars has increased from $14.7 billion to approximately $19.3 billion. Average unit mine value has increased 24% as compared with a 34% increase in prices in general. Apparent consumption has increased more than domestic production, indicating an increased dependence on imports. The mineral economy presents a complex pattern of development factors in the post-war period. This article presents a technique by which the various forces that have been acting on the market for a mineral commodity may be sorted out and by which the extent of the impact of technological change in use as well as the technological change in production can be measured. If one is interested in delineating fully and completely the impact of technological change upon the mining industries, it is not sufficient to describe the increase in productivity reflected by the above employment and production figures. What is reflected there is only the effect of technological change in the production function of the commodities under concern. These effects are obviously very substantial and have major implications for labor, capital and supplying industries. However, they are not the only effects of technological change and, in fact, may be relatively minor when the impact which arises because of changing technology in the using or consuming industries is considered.

The United States has never been a large coal exporting nation, and normally such shipments, aside from those to Canada, have been relatively small. Since the first railroad was built across the Allegheny Mountains, the imports have been quite small also, although fairly large tonnages of Canadian coal have moved into the extreme northeastern and northwestern states at times. In Table 21 are shown all data available about these shipments from 1790 to 1939, inclusive.

The difficulties attending the reduction of ferric sulphate in the determination of metallic iron by the method of Marguerite, are often serious, and affect time, patience and accuracy. They depend upon the condition and purity of the zinc used, the state of saturation of the solution, acidity, and temperature. D. J. Caruegie (Chem. A high degree of accuracy is often required in mine-surveying, in order that expensive mining work may not be misdirected. The making of underground connections by drifts or shafts located as the result of surveys presents a crucial test of correctness not usually involved in any other class of surveying. In view of these considerations, the present notes and description of a survey made in June, 1890, for the San Francisco shaft of the New Almaden quicksilver-mines, may be of interest to members of the Institute who are surveyors. The purpose of this survey was to locate on the surface a vertical 2-compartment shaft (3.5 by 7 ft.), to connect with another vertical shaft, of practically the same size, which had been sunk a number of years before from an adit-level about 240 ft. vertically below the surface, to a deeper, so-called 600-ft. level. It will be seen, of course, that the most important matter was to secure an exact coincidence in vertical line, so that the resulting continuous vertical shaft from the surface should have no offset or irregularity at the point of junction between its two parts. The levels were of less importance; but, as the hoisting-works were to be placed in position and the new shaft permanently timbered from the start, its correct alignment was an essential requirement. The important features of the work, therefore, were the methods used in determining with certainty : 1. That the shaft was located in the right place in a general way; 2. That the ordinary inaccuracies of linear and angular measurements were so reduced as to insure correctness of location within certain defined and allowable limits. Instruments.—Thc instruments used were: a Buff and Berger transit-theodolite, with a 6-in. horizontal plate, reading to 10 seconds; a Heller and Brightly Y-level; a Chestermán steel tape, graduated in tenths and hundredths of a foot; and New York leveling-rods, graduated to thousandths of a foot.

Mining examinations are of several kinds and the scope of the investigation depends in each case upon the purpose for which the examination is made. A formal examination of a developed mine is an expensive undertaking; from one to several months are allowed for the work according to the size of the property; many samples are taken; investigation is made of the geological features, including, perhaps, a topographical and geological survey of the surface; the metallurgical treatment of the ore is studied; finally, a determination of costs is demanded. Formal examinations are made for prospective purchasers or as a basis for the consolidation of several properties, and occasionally, in the owner's behalf, to verify the work of resident engineers, or to determine the readiness of a mine for equipment and the kind and capacity of equipment it shall receive. A formal examination of a mine should not be undertaken until a preliminary examination has shown that it is justified. It is regrettable that some engineers are in the habit of prosecuting long and exhaustive examinations of properties whose lack of merit should be, and perhaps is, apparent from the start, or of continuing their investigation long after an unfavorable result is seen to be inevitable. This wasting of a client's money is a species of trickery difficult to prove, and therefore the more contemptible. The environmental status of underground mining operations is critical to the health and safety of the miners; particularly in a large mine, the multitude of interacting parameters that can favorably or adversely affect the environmental status makes the manpower requirement of the routine checking of specific areas and conditions a formidable one. While the concept of environmental monitoring for miners has been considered for some time, until recently the availability of sensors to reliably measure the parameters of interest severely limited the utility of such systems. The status of sensors for mine use and the evaluation of environmental monitoring systems is reviewed.

THE year 1923 started a few days after the Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., discovered a 140,000-bbl. well at. La Rosa and a well of between 2500 and 5000 bbl. at La Paz, on the opposite side of Lake Maracaibo. These nearly simultaneous events changed, overnight, the general aspect of oil affairs in Venezuela. Up to that time, big things had been expected by the companies then in the district, but many major companies had shown little interest in the country. Within a few weeks the Pure Oil. Co. and the Gulf Oil Corpn. entered the field and acquired large properties. The Texas Co. purchased several concessions and the Standard of California, Atlantic Refining Co., and Mexican Petroleum Co. established offices. Representatives of many other companies visited the district during the first few months of the year. The sudden influx of buyers naturally caused a great rise in prices and this, together with overproduction in the United States, doubtless caused the slowing up of concession transfers in the latter part of the year. The following property transfers occurred: (1) The Gulf Oil Corpn. contract with the Maracaibo Oil Exploration Corpn., whereby the Gulf acquired the right to select 100,000 acres from the Maracaibo's zones. (2) The Gulf Co. purchase of one-quarter interest in seven concessions of the New England Oil Corpn., Ltd. (3) The Gulf Oil Corpn. purchase of several concessions of Kunhardt and others in the Perija district. (4) The Gulf Oil Corpn. purchase of certain portions of the one-kilometer Lake zone that were not covered by parcels or Government reserves (namely the "sobrantes"). (5) Pure Oil Co. purchase of all Government reserves turned back by Maracaibo Oil Exploration Corpn. in the districts of Mara and Miranda. (6) Standard Oil Co.: of New Jersey deal with the British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., for control of approxi-mately the eastern third of the .district of Buchivacoa, state of Falcon. (7) Royal Dutch deal with the British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., for the control of the central third of the district of Buchivacoa, Falcon. (8) The Texas Co. purchase of several concessions in Perija and one west of Mene Grande on the east side of Lake Maracaibo. (9) Purchase by the British Equatorial Oil Co., Ltd., of Goverment reserves corresponding to certain Creole Syndicate parcels under the margin of Lake Maracaibo near La Paz. (10) The Lago Petroleum Co. acquired a concession on all of Lake Maracaibo except a 1-Km. strip along the shore.
