Mineral dressing is an industrial art concerned with the treatment and separation of solids suspended in fluids. Knowledge and evaluation of the area of solid-fluid interface is important in all cases except those involving only large pieces of solid. In fact, many problems relating to comminution, to flotation, to thickening and classification, could be dealt with more rationally if the interfacial area were known. A number of methods have been proposed for the measurement of the surface of certain finely divided solids. Among them are methods using rate of dissolution of the solid,? its magnetic remanence,³ the turbidity of its suspension," and the character of the size distribution of the material.9 The first two are limited to one mineralogical species per sample; the third has certain optical limitations, especially for mineral mixtures, and the fourth is based on an extrapolation of uncertain validity. The need of a better and more general method of surface determination has long been felt, therefore. The method of P. H. Emmett,4 based upon the low-temperature adsorption of vapors, appears to fulfill this need. This method consists in determining the amount of nitrogen that is adsorbed by a given sample of solid at the temperature of boiling nitrogen. The more surface there is on the solid—both internal and external—the more nitrogen is abstracted. In actual operation, the method is somewhat less simple than has been stated so far, in that the nitrogen is adsorbed in an incomplete layer, the completeness and thickness of the layer being related to the pressure of the nitrogen in contact with the sample.2 This circumstance makes it necessary to determine the nitrogen adsorption for three or more values of the nitrogen pressure. Apparatus In the Richards Mineral Dressing Laboratories an Emmett apparatus has been built and tested (Figs. I and 2). A mechanical vacuum pump B and a mercury diffusion pump A work in series to give a high vacuum. The sample, placed in bulb D, can be evacuated by this pump train by suitable operation of the stopcocks in the glass tubing that connects the various parts of the apparatus. C is a McLeod gauge, used to ascertain the order of magnitude of the vacuum obtained, and not for accurate pressure measurements. Pressure measurements are made in the mercury manometer F and gas-volume measurements in the gas burette E. A new center for mining and metallurgical research is developing at Sterling Forest, N. Y., under the auspices of Union Carbide Corp. Here is to be located the Union Carbide Nuclear and Ore Research Laboratories. In truth, history has repeated itself; the Sterling Forest area in the days of the Revolutionary War, and for many years thereafter, was the mining and metallurgical center of the US. For in these Ramapo hills along the New York-New Jersey border, iron ore was mined, pig lion was cast, and the weapons of war and the plowshares of peace were forged. Before embarking on an historical pilgrimage to yesteryear-a brief description of Sterling Forest. Located in Orange County, N. Y., near Tuxedo, immediately north of the New York-New Jersey State line, and just west of the Erie Railroad and the New York State Thruway, Sterling Forest is approximately 35 mi from New York City. Title was acquired in 1956 from the Harriman family by City Investing Co. Its President, Robert W. Dowling, has established himself as a city planner, having conceived such projects as Pittsburgh's Gateway Center and Philadelphia's Penn Center. A unique, self-contained community -is planned that will contain light industry and centers for research and engineering. Colonies of homes will be interspersed throughout the 20,000 acres of forest land, lakes, and rolling hills. Culture will not be neglected, for Sterling Forest will be the new home for the annual Empire State Music Festival The Sterling Forest Gardens, 125 acres of landscaped woodland and streams, will become the "world's largest permanent floral showplace" The Sterling Forest International Research Building was opened earlier this year, and designed to provide all facilities needed by small growth research companies. The first major company to acquire land to construct research buildings at Sterling Forest is Union Carbide. 1763 ... Discovery of iron ore In turning back the pages of history, a fascinating story can be told of special interest to the metallurgist, the mining engineer, and perhaps even the sociologist. For, where new communities are planned today, older communities had been born, matured, and died. In these hills had lived the. iron miners, the blacksmiths, the lumbermen, the masons, and the teamsters that had given America its start in heavy industry. This was the area where the forests were crisscrossed with many wood roads that brought logs to the charcoal pits, and iron ore to the furnaces. Men make history. Our story brings forth many names of men known as ironmasters, or as industrial leaders-Hasenclever, Faesch, Erskine, Townsend, Ryerson, Parrott, Cooper, Hewitt, Jay Cooke, and Harriman. The name Sterling is derived from a Scotch Lord, the Fifth Earl of Stirling (in its earlier spelling). Lord Stirling was one of seven Englishmen granted a patent of land in the Ramapo hills by Queen Anne in 1707, known as the Cheesecock Patent. He sent an agent, Cornelius Board, to America in 1730, with the express purpose of looking for copper deposits. While he found no copper in his travels up and down the Ramapo Valley, he did find iron ore in two localities: first, in the vicinity of what is now Ringwood, N. J.; second, five miles to the north. There he constructed a forge and furnace at the edge of a lake in 1736, naming the land Stirling Property, after his patron. In 1740, the Ogden family in Newark bought land from Board at Ringwood and began smelting of iron in 1741. The Ringwood story Soon, a genius in the person of Peter Hasenclever appeared on the scene. He was attracted by an advertisement in the New York Mercury for March 5, 1764, in which David Ogden of Newark offered

In the summer of 1888 it was the fortune of the writer to present the subject of the desirability of establishing a set of samples of steel, which should be analyzed with extreme care, in order that they might become standards to which scientific and commercial analyses of iron and steel could be subsequently referred; also, that greater uniformity in the results of analyses might be brought about, since these standards would bear towards analytical methods somewhat the position which the original units of weight and length, the gramme and meter, or the pound and yard, preserved in Paris, London, and Washington, do to the mechanical arts. The plan met with hearty co-operation, with the result that com mittees were appointed in Sweden, Germany, France, England, and America, to receive the material and to see that the necessary au alyses were executed. In these days, when detailed investigations of stratigraphy, structure, and sand conditions so frequently result in the discovery of new oil fields, and applause from oil companies and the public, geologists do well to walk humbly, and punctiliously to admit that the geologic principles controlling the distribution of oil and gas have as yet been discovered only in part, and that what remains yet to be learned is probably vastly more than what is already known. The few experiments already attempted have been fragmentary, and somewhat desultory, and however positive each of us may be with respect to certain theoretical conclusions, many of the fundamental questions as to the origin and mode of occurrence of petroleum are subject to radical disagreement. Of the chemical changes attending the generation of petroleum from organic matter, little is actually known. Most of the postulated formulas are liable to be misleading, through ignorance of essential factors. Open-minded-ness is therefore a prime essential at the present stage of our science. Nevertheless, adopting the hypothesis that oil originates in some manner fundamentally connected with the organic theory, and in possible departure from such open-mindedness, the writer will pay no attention to the so-called inorganic theory, since every attempt to apply this theory to the study of old oil fields, or to the discovery of new ones, affords cumulative evidence of its inadequacy. In this paper, some of the factors affecting the occurrence of petroleum that the writer believes worthy of consideration by the prospector for oil in any new region will be discussed. Some of these, which arc less generaLly understood, will be considercd somewhat in detail. Other points, the significance of which cannot now be determined, require more field study, and for that reason are here brought to the attention of the field geologist. On the other hand, certain theoretical points which do not bear especially on the oil possibilities of a new region will be given little or no attention. The main topics that will be discussed are: (1) sufficiency of carbonaceous detritus and residues in the oil-forming rocks; (2) stage of carbonization of the organic matter in the oil-bearing formations; (3) folding of the strata; (4) thickness of sedimentary formations; (5) conditions of deposition.

The latent hardening of silver and an Ag-Au alloy was investigated by lateral compression, overshoot in tension and cormpression, and the stability of multiple-slib orientations. The latent hardening of a secondary slip systenz depends on its relation to the primary slip system. For most secondary slip systems the latent hardening is larger for Ag-10 at. pct Au than for pure silver. The maximum increase in. flow stress on a secondary slip system over that of the primary slip system was 40 pct. The work hardening during the lateral-compression test on the latent system after prestress on the primary system is iuterbreted in terms of the preferential distribution of barriers to dislocation movement with respect to the active slip system in work-lzardened fcc crystals. The work-hardening in fcc crystals is mainly due to the dislocation interactions and the barriers to dislocation movement formed as a result of reactions between dislocations of different slip systems. The operation of sources on the latent system depends on the flow stress of those systems; hence, the increase in flow stress of a latent system due to glide on an active system, which is called latent hardening, is an important element in understanding the phenomenon of work hardening. The problem of latent hardening has attracted the attention of many investigators in the past. For example, a theoretical study of the elastic latent hardening of the latent systems due to glide on an operative system has been made by Haasen' and ~troh. These calculations, however, neglect the stress required for the intersection of forest dislocations by the glide dislocations, a factor which would be important for producing macroscopic strains on the secondary slip systems. The importance of this factor will become evident from the results presented here. Attempts have also been made to determine the latent hardening of different slip systems by experimental means by the methods summarized in Table I.3-9 The experimental methods used have been subject to certain limitations. For instance, in the method used by Hauser,9 frictional constraints between the specimen and the compression platen were not eliminated by proper lubrication (see Hos- ford10). Secondly, with the exception of Kocks,6 Hauser,9 and Rohm and Kochendorfer,11 latent-hardening studies have been made on only one of the slip systems, i.e., on either the conjugate or the coplanar slip system; hence, extensive results are not available on the latent hardening of different slip systems in the same materials, with the exception of aluminum.6 It was therefore decided to study the latent hardening of the conjugate, critical and half-related slip systems in silver. Similar experiments were done in Ag-10 at. pct Au to study the effect of solute (gold) on the latent hardening of silver. Lastly, indirect evidence can be obtained by a study of the orientation stability of crystals of multiple-slip orientations in tension and compression. This method has been used by Kocks6 to supplement his studies of latent hardening in aluminum. Similar studies were made at room temperature in single crystals of silver. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The single crystals of the desired orientations were grown and the tensile test specimens were prepared as described in Ref. 12. The compression tests were made on 1/4-in.-cube specimens. The specimens were cut from single crystals, in the Servomet spark-erosion machine.13 The two cut surfaces were planed using the lowest available planing rate in the machine to minimize the deformation layer. A brass strip was used as the planing tool. This method of preparation ensured plane parallel faces for the compression tests. The deformed material was removed by prolonged etching in a weak etching solution. A weak etching solution was used to prevent pitting of the surfaces and to ensure uniform etching. About 25 to 50 µ of material were removed from all faces by the etching treatment. The specimens were then annealed for 24 hr at 940°C in oxygen-free helium and cooled in the furnace to room temperature over a period of 7 hr. After annealing, the orientation of the specimens was determined by Laue back-reflection technique to make sure that no recrystallization had occurred on annealing. The compression-test technique and setup are described in Ref. 14. The Laue back-reflection technique was used to study the overshoot in tension, the overshoot in compression, and the stability of the axial orientation in tension and compression. The tests were interrupted after every few percent strain to determine the axial orientation. In investigating the overshoot in compression, the operative system was determined by studying the asterism of the Laue spots.

THE (110) [001] texture in silicon iron is of considerable interest both from the technological and scientific points of view. Its occurrence was reported more than 20 years ago.1-4 The texture develops by means of secondary re crystallizatjon5 and can be very strong, that is, greater than 90 pct alignment even thouh the primary re crystallization texture is weak or complex. This behavior is in contradistinction to the face-centered metals which develop their strong secondary recrystalliza-tion texture from a strong primary recrystalliza-tion texture.', The microstructural changes accompanying the (110) [001] texture formation in silicon iron are as follows: When properly prepared cold-rolled sheet (i.e., 0.015 in. thick) is annealed at about 800°C, primary recrystallization occurs and a fairly stable fine-grained primary recrystallized matrix of about 0.02-mm-diam grain size is produced. The material at this stage does not have the strong (110) [110] texture. As the temperature is raised to about 900°C, relatively large grains appear in the finegrained matrix and they grow at the expense of the smaller grains to many times the sheet thickness. In time the complete sample is consumed by these large grains. This process of the growth of relatively few grains (about one in 105 primary grains) at the expense of many grains is called secondary recrystallization. Since all the secondary grains are of essentially (110) [001.] orientation, the strong texture is developed by this secondary recrystallization process. Theories of the (110) [001] texture in polycrystal-line silicon iron have been proposed by Decker and Harker and by Dunn.Decker and Harker have shown that grains initially in the (110) [001] orientation will upon annealing after cold-rolling, re-crystallize back to the initial orientation. To account for the sharp texture in silicon iron they propose that (110) [001] grains become more highly strained than grains in other orientations and therefore recrystallize first. They are then the lowest energy grains and can consume their higher energy neighbors. Grains in orientations other than (110)

This paper describes the effects of slurry viscosity on the selection-for-breakage and breakage distribution parameters in the wet grinding of ores. A series of experimental tests were run on laboratory scale ball mills. Slurry viscosities were modified by varying the solids/water ratio with and without the presence of selected chemicals. Very consistent and predictable correlations are shown to exist. The grinding parameters were calculated using a computerized back-calculation technique developed by Klimpel and Austin. Industrial scale circuit calculations and preliminary plant trial data suggest that considerable increases in throughput and/or fineness of grind can be achieved through the judicious use of chemical additives.

The slvuclures of alloys in the system In-Bi have been investigated after (levy vapid queuching from the mell (splat cooling) to -190°C. Tuo-phase fields could be suppressed over most of the tota1 concentvalion range; five melastable phases a1, a2, ?, ?1. and ß exisl, of which four have simple elementtike structures. For example, ß has the A5 struclure of white till. Crystal-tographic data and coordination numbers for these phases aye given, as well as addilional information on the equilibrium diagram, where a new phase In5Bi3 teas found. THE phase diagrams of binary combinations of B elements from the groups B2, B3, B4, and B5 are usually of a simple type and show considerably fewer intermediate phases than combinations of these elements with A metals, transition metals, or the B1 noble metals. Aside from phases such as the typical B3-B5 compounds with the ZnS-B3 structure type, few stoichiometric phases are known; among them are In2Bi and 1nBi.l Nonstoichiometric phases include ß (In-Sn), a1, (In-Pb), and the tin-rich ? phases in the In-Sn, Cd-Sn, and Hg-Sn systems.' The first two phases have a close relationship to indium, while the latter group are known to be structurally related to a Sn. Thus, there are generally no immediate experimental data for the correlation of the crystal structures of B metals and B metal combinations with certain monotonously varying parameters, such as the valence electron concentration (VEC), or the average atomic size. Such parameters have been recognized as structure determining, e.g., for the transition 4 Sn — y phase,2,3 where nonintegral valence electron concentrations are encountered. It should be possible to extend such correlations to other binary systems, if nonequilibrium single-phase alloys could be produced over broad valence electron concentration ranges, and if their crystal structures could be regarded as being imposed by their electronic states. It has been shown in the case of the tin-rich 7 phases3 that alloy phases with typical crystal structures can be produced in B metal alloys rapidly quenched from the liquid to -190°C by the splat cooling technique due to Duwez,3-8 and reviewed in Refs. 5 and 6. The In-Bi system was selected because it extends over a valence electron concentration range in which several metastable, nonstoichiometrir phases could be expected to occur. Further, the low melting points of the known intermediate phases, In2Bi and InBi, Fig. 1(a), indicated low binding energies and thus possibly low driving forces for the formation Of the equilibrium structures. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES AND RESULTS The preparation of the quenched foils followed the practice described in Ref. 3. Master alloys were produced by melting of indium (99.97+) and bismuth (99.99+) in evacuated Vycor capsules or in an inert gas arc furnace; quantities of 20 mg were splat-cooled onto copper and silver substrates held at - 190°C; and crystal structures and lattice parameters were determined on a GE XRD-5 diffractometer using Cu Ka, radiation at -190°C and at room temperature. The duplication of each run with both substrates permitted the elimination of overlap of the substrate diffraction pattern and that of the investigated substance. The XRD patterns were usually taken from sin2 " = 0.03 to 0.35; the substrate was used as a means of internal calibration. The fractional accuracy of the lattice parameters of metastable phases is approximately 10-3 In the following, all percentages are in atomic percent. The stable and metastable phases found after rapid quenching to -190°C are listed in Table I, together with estimated concentration ranges and crystallographic data. The investigated alloys and phases present in them are given in Table 11. Except for the region between indium with 33 and 50 pct Bi, where a revision of the equilibrium phase diagram became necessary to include a new stoichiometric phase In5Bi3, the diffraction patterns taken after heating to room temperature agreed with those expected from the phase diagram, Fig. l(a). This suggests that the new nonstoichiometric phases are not stable at room temperature, thus following the observations made for the y phases based on tin.3 Results concerning the equilibrium phases In2Bi and In5Bi3 and the revision of the equilibrium phase diagram which is made necessary by the inclusion of In5Bi3 will be treated first. The Crystal Structure of In2Bi. Makarov7 had identified In2Bi as belonging to the AlB2-C32 type ; however, in a later paper the structure was revised.8 In2Bio was found to be of the Ni21n-B8ß type,21 with a = 5.496A, c = 6.57.9A, and N = 6 atoms per unit cell.9 This crystal structure was confirmed in the present work; definite evidence for the doubling of the c axis, as compared to the A1B2-C32 type, and for the proposed order structure, was found in the powder pattern. The observed lattice parameters agree well with those of Ref. 8; those measured at -190°C are given- in Table I. The Crystal Structure of In5Bi3. A new, equilibrium, intermediate phase was identified in slow-cooled, as-cast alloys; it was identified as In5Bi3. The structure has been worked out by Giessen and Grant;" lattice parameters at -190°C are given in Table I. This phase is probably identical with "In3Bi2", produced by vapor deposition techniques, but not recognized as an equilibrium phase by Palatnik et a1.11 After completion of the present work, the existence of In5Bi3 has also been demonstrated by superconductivity measurements on In-Bi alloys.20

World production of asbestos is estimated to be at a current level of almost 3.5 million tons, having more than doubled in the past ten years. A substantial part of the increase has been due to a rapid expansion in the Soviet Union. Production from that country during 1964 is estimated at 1.5 million tons and, as a consequence, Russia has displaced Canada as the leading world producer. Although traditionally the asbestos mining industry has been centered near Sverdlovsk in the Urals, two new producing areas have been under development for some time. It is expected that a new mine will be in operation in 1965 near Kiembi, Kazakhstan, some 300 miles south of Sverdlovsk, and an- other mine at Aktrovak in Tannu-Tuva, west of Lake Baikal. These developments will provide a significant increase in the production capability of Russia. Although internal consumption is expected to increase with the addition of new asbestos- cement producing facilities now under construction in Russia, there is some speculation that exports will also increase.

INTRODUCTION MINERAL deposits that have formed by the various geologic processes, when exposed to air and water at or near the surface of the earth, break down and form new compounds that are stable under surface conditions. Mechanical disintegration of the ores proceeds along with chemical alteration which generally is attended by oxidation, carbonation and hydration. Essentially all minerals are affected-silicates, carbonates, native metals, sulphides, etc. Where iron sulphides are present, oxidation yields sulphuric acid, and in the presence of oxygen and iron, ferric sulphate, a powerful solvent, is formed. Above the water level, in the vadose or shallow zone, both air and water are present. Below the water level air is excluded and that which is carried down with water is removed from the solution by reactions with reducing materials. Above the water level, solution is the pre-dominating process; below the water level, precipitation generally is equally important. In some deposits, particularly above the hater level, valueless materials are removed from the ore, leaving certain metals in a more highly concentrated state. This type of alteration, which has been termed negative enrichment, is common in ores of iron, aluminum, manganese and certain other metals. Some gold deposits, particularly those in which the environment is unfavorable for solution of gold, have been enriched near the surface by removal of material other than gold. Certain metals are readily dissolved in an oxidizing acid environment. These include copper, silver and, under certain conditions, gold. In the presence of iron sulphides, deposits of these metals are likely to be leached above the water level. The metals are carried downward to depths where air is excluded, and where they may be redeposited, generally below the water level. Such enrichment by addition of metals has been termed positive enrichment.

Island Creek conditions are generally referred to as ideal; yet, as at all other properties, there are all known hazards of coal mining. The hardest of these hazards to combat is the human element. The basic thought in the minds of the management of these properties is to produce coal with the utmost safety, and it has impressed upon its supervisory force that it does not want a ton of coal unless it can be produced safely. This company has instituted a mine inspection department, which reports direct to the general manager, arid all matters pertaining to safety come under the direction of this department. Through the medium of the inspection department, the management is kept in touch with the actual conditions existing in general at all mines. Inspections are made regularly arid continuously; that is, at all times while the mine!: are in operation some sections of some mines are being examined. These inspections cover all active and inactive workings. Miners are contacted in their working places and other employees at their respective, work. A thorough check is made to see that the state mining laws are complied with and that company safety rules arc being observed. Night shifts receive the same attention as day shifts. All violations and dangerous practices are brought to the attention of the plant supervisory force with suggestions and recommendations; major hazards of emergency nature are taken up immediately with the management. Periodical inspections are also made of all tipples, preparation plants, dumping and hoisting equipment, to see that all machinery is properly guarded, and walkways and platforms properly fenced; conditions of equipmcnt and mechanical defects are also reported. Reports of inspection are written in letter form and in such a manner as to give the management a picture of the existing conditions at the time of inspection. Copies of inspection reports are forwarded to the superintendents with the general manager'? comments. Sublevel stoping has been used in Finland since the 1930's and today more than ten under- ground mines have adopted it as their main stoping method (Fig. I). Approximately 80% of the total underground tonnage is mined by sub- level stoping (Table 1) The first mines to introduce the sublevel stoping method in Finland were limestone mines. The development of sublevel stoping was very slow up to the mid 1960's when the switch to trackless mining started and the increase of mechanization lead to higher capacity and productivity. The method itself has been almost the same since the 1950's when long hole drilling was introduced. According to a future prognosis sublevel caving will give way to sub- level stoping; on the other hand, open pit mining will at the same time grow rapidly with some new mineral orebodies, which will he brought into production. Most Finnish orebodies are, however, only marginal ores and they could not support mining with more expensive methods than open pit mining or sublevel stoping. The future of sublevel stoping seems relatively bright. GEOLOGICAL AND ROCK MECHANICAL BACKGROUND The rock mechanical conditions in Finland are in general relatively good and the rocks firm. The compressive strength is normally 40 - 150 Mpa and modulus of elasticity 40 - 200 Gpa. Low values are common in altered and fractured rocks and near the ore contact Rock stress measurements have been carried out already for 20 years for mine design and monitoring purposes. The results of these measurements show that relatively high horizontal stresses seem to be common (Fig. 2).

THE occurrence of copper ores at Garimenapenta, 14 59 min 30 sec N Lat., 79 33 min 10 sec E Long., in Nellore district, Madras State, India, has been examined and investigated on numerous occasions during the past two centuries.' No tangible orebody was ever located as a result of all the ex- tensive trenching and shafting done in the area by various agencies. However, during 1933 Messrs. Piepmeyer & Co., a German firm engaged by one of the leaseholders of the area, carried out an electrical survey using inductive methods.' On the basis of certain strong indications found in their survey, they recommended that the prospect be proved by drilling or shafting. But for want of financial backing no further work was carried out. When the Madras government more recently proposed investigation, Dr. Krishnan, then Supt. BY surface treatment of coal is meant the application of a material, either solid or liquid, to the surface of pieces of coal. The purposes of surface treatment are varied. They may be to identify or "trade-mark" the coal, to modify the burning characteristics, the coking tendencies, or the behavior of the ash, to prevent the freezing of wet coal, or to control the dust. The control of dust is the usual purpose of surface treatment. TRADE-MARKING COAL The application of color to the surface of coal for the purpose of identification and registration of the trade-mark has been practiced to some extent. In 1928, the Glen Alden Coal Co. began to color its coal and adopted the trade-mark, "Blue Coal." The Old Ben Coal Co. later followed a similar practice with "Green Coal." A commoner means of identification of coal has been the stenciling of designs or pasting labels on large lumps or in the distribution of small cardboard tags through the smaller sizes. The details of the method used to color coal have not been revealed. Usually all of the coal is not treated, because of the expense. Only enough pieces are colored to show clearly when distributed through the coal.
