The Tooele plant of the Internationa1 Smelting & Refining Co. is situated at the mouth of Pine canyon, Tooele county, Utah. It is connected with the main line of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad by the Tooele Valley railway, and is about 7 miles from Tooele Junction. Fig. 1 is a general view of the plant. The copper plant has been in operation since July, 1910, arid the first blast furnace at the lead plant was blown in on Feb. 29, 1912. The location of the plant was selected on sloping ground with the idea of using gravity to the fullest extent and thus keeping labor at a minimum. MINING method improve through the gradual process of evolution and in 1340 there were no marked outstanding innovations. On the other hand refinements of detail and betterment: in equipment design continued to progress. Among the most important changes have been the increased application of trucks and highway equipment, including tractors and bull- dozers, to open-pit mining as exemplified by Phelps Dodge's Morenci operations; the Mesabi iron range; and the Tri-State district. Mass or bulk handling contributed its part underground with slurhers and conveyors at Consolidated Coppermines and slushers at Climax; and in open-pit mining. conveyors found increased use on the Mesabi range.

A PRevioUs study1 of the relations of impact strength to inclusions showed that the dynamic strength of steel is lowered by the presence of visible counted inclusions, but that other factors comprised in the term "body" have a marked influence. The previous work was carried out on selected steels from a single source, so that the body factor was purposely minimized, but even under these conditions it was found that inclusion counting or the use of the commercial inclusion rating is not satisfactory. The tensile-impact test, however, was indicated as a satisfactory measure of dynamic strength. It was further suggested that the tensile-impact test should be so standardized as to be suitable for use in specifications, and that the hardness factor should be worked out over a sufficient range to admit ready commercial use of the tensile-impact test. In accordance with these suggestions, and in view of the fact that the steels reported in the previous paper were selected and treated so as to have a minimum variation in body, hardness and structure, further work has been performed on a variety of steels which are not limited by these conditions. The word "body" is used here for want of a better term. It is simply a convenient expression which comprises the effect, of the various unknown factors that modify the dynamic strength of the steel. Thus at our present state of knowledge, the writers have chosen to consider hardness, structure and counted inclusion content as factors not comprised in the term "body," and such factors as raw materials, process of melting, fabricating, etc., as comprised in the term "body." Numerous grades of steels made in several ways have been taken from different sources and have been heat-treated to varying hardness by normalizing and by quenching and drawing. The results, therefore, may be considered to be generally applicable to current engineering steels. The effect of small additions of oxygen on the hardness, density, and lattice parameters of high purity zirconium has been investigated. Precision parameter values and density of oxygen-free zirconium are given as: a,, - 3.2258 kX units, C = 5.1373 kX units, O23 = 6.507 g per cc. THE effect of oxygen on the hexagonal-phase lattice constants of pure zirconium is of interest for several reasons. The extensive hardening effect of oxygen noted by previous investigators' must be due in part to the lattice distortion accompanying its introduction and possibly to the preferred position of the oxygen atoms. De Boer and Fast' have shown that oxygen is taken into solid solution in large amounts, appearing to occupy an interstitial position. These authors also found that expansion of the lattice was not uniform since the a axis attained a constant value after the addition of 10 atomic pct while the c axis continued to expand. The Holden mine operated by the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Co. is on the east slope of the Cascade Range in north central Washington on the south slope of Railroad Creek valley at an elevation of 3500 ft. The mine may be reached by a 40 mile boat trip from the town of Chelan which is at the southern tip of Lake Chelan, to Lucerne at the mouth of Railroad Creek and an 11. mile bus ride up Railroad Creek to Holden. A11 freight and concentrate is moved over this route to Chelan Falls on the Columbia River which is on the railroad four miles below the town of Chelan. The mine is now producing 2000 tons of gold, copper, and zinc ore per day which is treated in the Holden mill. Gold-copper and zinc concentrates are made, the first of which is shipped to Tacoma, Wash., and the latter to Kellogg, Idaho, for smelting. Ore is broken by long-hole blasting using the Noranda system which has been modified to meet local conditions. Until recently, blastholes have been drilled by diamond drills. Now a partial substitution of percussion drill holes, drilled with tungsten carbide insert bits, is being made. Geology The ore body occurs as a replacement deposit in a highly metamorphosed series of sedimentary rocks, mainly gneiss and schists, in a shear zone several hundred feet in width and of undetermined length. Commercial ore has been found in mineable widths of 25 to 100 ft for approximately 2500 ft along its strike. The commercial minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and gold. During the period of mineralization considerable silicifica-tion took place giving the ore an abrasive drilling characteristic. Following the period of mineralization, numerous dikes were introduced into the ore body. The earlier ones were of granite composition having a width of a few inches up to 80 ft. These were followed by much younger, fine grained basic dikes which usually do not exceed 2 ft in width. Development of Percussion Blasthole Drilling Equipment Test work with the 1½-in. tungsten carbide bit was carried on in development headings for several months early in 1947. The short life of the bits, because of gauge loss caused by the abrasive nature of the rock, prevented its adoption for this use. However fast drilling speed and ability to drill a long uniform hole suggested its use for drilling blastholes in competition with diamond drills as diamond costs were steadily increasing and exper-ienced drillers were difficult to obtain. The 1½-in. bit was the largest available at the time initial test work was started with sectional steel. The 1½-in. hole limited the diameter of the steel thread and coupling which could be used. Type F couplings were first used but because of the small thread section excessive breakage of the steel was experienced. Type H couplings were tried next. In order to use this coupling which is 15/8 in. in outside diameter, it was reduced to 1 3/8 in. giving 1/8 in. clearance between the coupling and the hole. Rod breakage at the thread was substantially reduced but some coupling breakage was experienced, however the overall performance was considered satisfactory (see Fig 1 for illustration of coupling and thread). Early test work with the 1½ in. bit indicated machines of piston diameters larger than 255 in. would cause inserts to loosen or break. It was found however that the additional weight of the sectional steel cushioned the blow enough to prevent bit failures when 3-in. Leyners were used. Rods used with the 1½-in. bits were 7/8 in. q. o. for sectional steel and 1 in. q. o. for all chuck pieces. In May 1948, 2-in. tungsten carbide bits became available and test work was immediately started. The 2-in. hole approximated the AX (1 15/16 in.) diamond drill hole which was being used exclusively for blastholes and permitted their substitution for diamond drill holes in a ring without alteration of pattern, burden, or explosives. Wrought chromium-base alloys containing yttrium, cubic monocarbides of the Ti(Zr)C type, and similay alloys containing manganese and rhenium have been melted and fabricated. Strength has been studied by hot hardness and elevated-temperature tensile and rupture measurements, low-temperature ductility by tensile testing, and surface stability by oxidation testing. In additiod, studies have been conducted of the carbide stability, and of aging behavior. The carbide dispersion generates effective elevated-temperature strength, which is further enhanced hv strain-induced precipitation. The dispersion exhibits classical dissolution and aging response. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of these alloys is above room temperature. The alloys reported show fairly good oxidation resistance, but nitrogen contamination can cause fortnation of a hard Cr2N layer under the oxide scale. Manganese does not appear to be a promising alloying element in chromium. In the years 1945 to 1950, the metal chromium was considered as a possible base for alloy systems due to its considerably higher melting point than superalloys, its low density, its high thermal conductivity, and its apparent capacity for strengthening. However, this interest in chromium was short-lived. It was found difficult to melt and cast, to be exceptionally sensitive to the effect of minor imperfections, to have a lack of ductility at both room and elevated temperatures, and to be subject to a deleterious effect of alloying elements upon the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature.' Since then, chromium, as a practical alloy base, has remained virtually unstudied. Further, purposeful ignoring of chromium has been promoted by statements that its bcc structure would not allow it to be strengthened to useful values, when compared to the "austenitic" alloys.2 Recently, a new look has been taken at chromium-base alloy systems. Study of the literature will show that chromium, providing some of its disadvantages could be eliminated or minimized, actually has a rather attractive potential as an alloy-system base. Analysis of rather scattered data suggests that chromium is quite capable of being strengthened to high levels. Also, significant strengthening of its two sister elements in Group VI-A, molybdenum and tungsten, has been demonstrated in a number of commercial and exploratory alloys. Chromium should be similar. Since chromium does not readily form a volatile oxide like tungsten or molybdenum, it offers a much higher probability of giving birth to alloy systems with useful oxidation resistance. Concerns about possible high elemental vapor pressure have been mitigated by recent data.3 In addition, the physical properties exhibited by chromium are attractive for application as a high-temperature structural material. For instance, its thermal conductivity varies from 49 to 36 Btu-ft/hr-sq ft-°F over its range of usefulness (which is two to four times higher than most superalloys), its density is about 7.2 g per cc (20 pct less than most nickel-base alloys), its coefficient of thermal expansion varies from 4 to 8 x 10-6 per OF, and it has a relatively high modulus of elasticity, approximately 42 x 10' psi.4 Alloying studies on a chromium base in the past have usually encompassed rather sweeping solid-solution alloy additions for strengthening. This is not consistent with contemporary alloying practice in Group VI-A. For instance, molybdenum, also in Group VI-A, is primarily alloyed for strength improvement by use of heat-treatable carbide dispersions.5 Chromium and molybdenum are similar in their chemical activity and other properties. Thus, strengthening of chromium by carbide dispersions was studied. Chromium-base alloys are plagued with room-temperature brittleness, although high-purity unal-loyed chromium can be made ductile.4,8 Use of yttrium as a scavenger has done much to improve ductility and resistance to nitrogen embrittlement in chromium systems,7 so it was utilized in this program. It has also recently been found8 that small rhenium additions (1 to 5 pct) create improvement in the ductility of Type 218 tungsten wire. This is apparently related to the remarkable effect of rhenium additions near its terminal solid solubility in all Group VI-A metals.9'10 Investigation to establish if dilute concentrations of rhenium would also be effective in chromium appeared to be logical for this program. Since rhenium is too expensive to be practical in alloys for application as structural components, ductility improvements through solid-solution alloying were also sought by substitution of manganese for rhenium; manganese, like rhenium, exists in Group VII of the periodic system. The optimum amount of carbide dispersion for chromium-base alloys was obtained by analogy with molybdenum. Strengthening in molybdenum is achieved by use of Ti-Zr carbide dispersions. A

Oil burners, oil furnaces, and methods of installation, have been the subject of many articles, but information concerning oil-burning systems, based upon scientific principles, is still in great demand, especially in the manufacturing districts of our country. Fuel oil, as it is termed (this being the residuum from oil refineries), has for many years been of great service to our manufacturers, and has justified its popularity not only by producing a superior manufactured product, but by turning out approximately 50 per cent. more product than can be made with coa1 fuel under like conditions. To install a system requiring only an oil-storage tank, a small pump, and an oil-supply main with numerous laterals leading to the various burners, furnaces, boilers, etc., is a comparatively simple matter; and, because fuel oil is very volatile, it is not necessary to heat it, even during the winter months in a very cold climate. Furthermore, only a small amount of power is required to atomize fuel oil, this often being done by a positive pressure blower, or by a mechanical burner. An analysis of fuel oil, together with that of various other liquid fuels, is given in Table I.

Prior to the Civil War, there were several small charcoal furnaces for smelting the brown limonite ore that is found, in comparatively small bodies, throughout the central and north-central portions of the state. During the Civil War, these furnaces furnished charcoal iron to the Confederate Government. No attention was paid to the large bodies of lime-bearing hematite ore that now supplies the bulk of the ore used in the various blast-furnace plants of this district until the latter part of the 19th century. Red Mountain, which is the southernmost and one of the smaller ranges of the Appalachian Chain, lying immediately south of the Birmingham and Bessemer, is the principal source of this ore. The orebody outcrops on the northern face, extends through the mountain, and underlies Shades Valley on the southern side. When it was found that these ores could be worked satisfactorily in the blast furnaces, there was a comparatively rapid growth in the blastfurnace industry in the Birmingham district. As these ores are far more refractory than the limonite ores, this blast-furnace development was accompanied by the construction of beehive ovens to carbonize the coal, in order to supply the necessary fuel. The state's production of beehive coke in 1880 was 60,781 tons; ten years later this had increased to 1,072,942 tons; and, in 1897 the production had reached 1,443,017 tons. In 1898, the first byproduct oven built in the state was put in operation. This plant consisted of 120 horizontal-flue Semet-Solvay ovens, three flues in height by thirty flues in length with an average width of 16 in. The plant was constructed by the Semet-Solvay Co., for the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co., and was located adjacent to the blast-furnace plant of that company at Ensley. SAFETY records have improved in all branches of the mineral industry. While annual production was rising from $2 billion in 1910 to nearly $12 billion in 1950, fatalities decreased from 3539 in 1911 to 974 in 1951. And, although safety progressed under hand methods, it progresses more effectively under modern, mechanized methods. But powered devices such as electric or diesel units can in themselves create new hazards unless proper safeguards are instituted. Health Use of diesels underground is increasing. Diesel equipment has been used in construction of 34 tunnels in 16 states in the last 17 years. The 77 noncoal underground mines in 24 states using diesels underground range from mines with large open stopes to those with narrow veins, so that the ventilating problems represent a good cross-section of U. S. mining. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has received no report that anyone has suffered ill effects from the proper use of properly maintained equipment. The necessity for correct maintenance and use of satisfactory exhaust conditioners cannot be emphasized too strongly.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received. may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

The increasing demand for greater speed and more accuracy, in making daily assays of ores and products from mills treating material containing but very small quantities of lead and copper, has caused the older analytical methods to be supplanted by new ones devised to meet the needs of modern work. For " control" work in copper-analyses, I had, previous to the present equipment, introduced in my laboratory the ordinary electrolytic method, using hollow cylindrical electrodes; and with these I began a series of experiments in determining the lead-content of daily mill-samples and controls. The results, proving accurate and satisfactory, I then devised, with Mr. H. E. T. Haultain, a cheaper electrode than the ordinary jaCket-electrode, which costs from $15 to $20,—the expense of the older form making the installation of many units very costly. The form of cathode finally adopted as the most satisfactory, shown in Fig. 1, is cut from 0.001-in. platinum foil. It is 12.5 cm. long, and is divided into a blade 4 cm. wide and 6.25 cm. long, and a tongue 0.7 cm. aide and 6.25 long, the immersion area being 50 sq. cm. and weight 1.5 grams. The blade is first sand-blasted and then corrugated lengthwise, in order to impart the necessary rigidity. Strips of platinum foil 0.001 in. thick, 12.5 cm. long and 0.5 cm. aide, having a median corrugation, form the anodes. Three electrodes are used in each cell; one anode in the middle and one cathode on each side of the anode. These electrodes are connected to slotted aluminum terminals, in which they are held by contact pressure. The terminals are 5/16in. rods, projecting 2 in. horizontally in front of the wall of the cabinet; at the back the middle electrode (anode) is connected with one pole of the current, and the two outer ones (cathodes) with the other pole.

WITH most cast metals the grain size may vary within wide limits, depending upon the conditions at the moment of freezing. These conditions are subject to control in magnesium-base alloys, by proper melting and superheating techniques, enabling production of quite uniform and fine-grained castings, almost independent of section thickness. However, such variations of grain size as do exist, in common with all metals, are reflected in corresponding changes in mechanical properties. It is the intent of this paper to present data giving the relationship between grain size and mechanical properties. Data are also included on the combined effects of grain size and microporosity. In addition, a short discussion of factors influencing the grain size of sand castings is included. MEASUREMENT OF GRAIN SIZE By grain size is meant the statistical distribution of volumes occupied by the individual crystallites in a metal section. Since this is almost always impossible of direct measurement, several methods of estimating and expressing the size have been evolved. Most exact methods make use of the microscope. This involves study of a single plane cut at random through the metal. What is seen in the microscope are polygons, each the cross section of a grain. The diameters or areas of these polygons are then measured and the grain size is expressed as an average diameter, number of grains per unit area, average area per grain, or, rarely, average volume per grain. Rutherford, Aborn, and Bain3 have discussed extensively the errors involved when using a plane section to estimate volume. They clearly point out that the tendency is to underestimate the true grain size because of the nature of the measurement. The A.S.T.M.. recommends that measurement be made by comparison with a standard chart, by means of Jeffries' planimetric method' or Heyn's intercept method. The Society recommends that the notation be in terms of the number of grains per unit area (as is the grain-size number used for steel) or as an average diameter, expressed in inches or millimeters (as for copper and brass). The method of measurement used for this study was comparison with a standard chart, which has been described by P. F. George.', The chart was constructed by photographing at i00 diameters a uniform specimen with an average grain diameter of 0.003 in. The average diameter of this specimen was determined by numerous measurements, using both the Jeffries and Heyn methods. The other grain sizes were then obtained by appropriate enlargement of the master sample. Careful comparison of the chart method with other methods on identical samples indicates that though the differences be-

Although published data on the physical properties of rock are voluminous, information is often lacking on the environmental conditions under which such data were acquired. Efforts are frequently directed to improve specimen tolerances and preparation procedures; but investigators often overlook giving the rock environment equally careful control during the testing program. Generally, tests are conducted at existing laboratory room conditions, and the prepared rock specimens are frequently, if not most commonly, air-dried for various lengths of time before testing. The standard testing atmosphere recommended by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM)1 is 73.4°F and 50% relative humidity. To maintain a rock at 50% relative humidity for testing purposes, however, requires special equipment and preconditioning procedures, as this study demonstrates. Relatively small variations in the moisture content of a specimen, for example, due to the coolants or lubricants used during specimen preparation, can cause significant variations in the physical properties measured. Such moisture variations may occur in the rock specimen even after it is air-dried, since laboratory humidity conditions commonly fluctuate from day to day. For these reasons, this study emphasizes procedures for preconditioning and maintaining a controlled environment during testing. Although the effects of moisture or temperature on rock properties have previously been studied, their combined effect on rock properties is unknown. In this study, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's and stiffness moduli, and longitudinal wave velocity were determined and compared under controlled conditions of temperature, moisture, and pressure for 11 environments considered to be of particular interest in laboratory, in-situ, and even simulated lunar environments. At Black Lake, Quebec, Lake Asbestos of Quebec Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Smelting and Refining Co., has opened a $36-million mining and milling operation which will produce about 100,000 tons of asbestos fiber a year and add 7 pct to the Free World's supply. The orebody once lay beneath Black Lake, and readying the ore deposit for open pit mining meant removing about 37 million cu yd of overburden- 30 million cu yd by dredging and pumping, and 7 million by power shovels and trucks. The enormous amount of material to be dredged, control of drainage during dredging, the need to cope with drainage problems in the area and to provide for flood control to replace the regulating effect of the lake, posed unusual engineering challenges and required tremendous capital investment.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) FEW authors of treatises and papers on engineering subjects have . given adequate attention to topographic maps.. The statement applies especially to mining engineering in all branches. Even those who have discussed such maps have treated the subject only in a general way. Therefore it is proposed to outline in this paper a few of the uncommon, yet important relationships which topographic maps and their by-product, structure-contour maps, have to modern methods of mining investigation and development when the facts depicted on such maps are properly interpreted. Topography, as suggested by the etymology of the word, menus a detailed description of particular places. Written descriptions have been found less effective than the pictorial representations, therefore attempts have been made in various ways to picture the surface features of places. Lines and shading have been used, hachures drawn, and, finally, the contour topographic map. To a large extent this style of snap is the result of the demands of engineers. It is designed to meet their needs far more than those of the man untrained in engineering. In fact, the average man obtains a better idea of the topography of an area from the hachure system than from contour maps. . Since the maps. have been made chiefly for the use of the engineer, they ought to meet his demands on the one hand, and, on the other, should be used by him to the fullest extent. Such maps, when properly made, accurately portray a portion of the earth's surface and should present the topography better than a personal examination of the area without a map could present it, because the person making such examination views only a limited portion of the surface at a time, and estimates distances only roughly with his eye. Let the engineer consider carefully the fact that in many instances the topographic map is superior to a personal examination of the surface features of a property because the map is based on careful instrumental measurements, whereas the eye gives imperfect data because it can be used merely for the estimation and

Strong's equation for calculating bottom-hole pressure reduction due to gas cutting of drilling mud is corrected, resulting in a simpler equation which is easier to use. Use of the equation is illustrated by examples. It is shown that reduction of weight of a 10 lb/gal mud by 50 per cent at the surface due to gas cutting produces only n 3 per cent decrease in hydrostatic head at the bottom of a 5,000-ft well. It is also shown that at the surface 5 volumes of air per volume of mud are required to reduce the apparent mud weight from 8.5 to 6.5 lh/gal in a 3,000-ft well. Illustrative graphs are included to show the effect of various degrees of gas cutting on apparent mud weight at depths of 2,000, .5,000 and 10,000 ft and to show variation of apparent mud weight, with depth for a 100 lb/cu ft (13.37 lb/gal) mud gas cut to 90 lb/cu ft (12.03 lb/gal) at the surface. INTRODUCTION In 1938, Strong' published the following equation for calculating reduction in bottom-hole pressure due to gas cutting of drilling mud h = 1/D [p + pn/100 In p + p(1-n/100)/p(1- n-100)] where: h = depth in feet P = pressure in atmospheres at depth h due to mud column only D = hydrostatic pressure in atmospheres of a col-umn of uncut mud 1 ft high p = back pressure at well-head (in atmospheres) n/100 = fraction by volume of gas in mud at well-head at back pres-sure p This equation was recently found to contain an error due to an incor-rect expression for variation of vol-ume fraction of gas with pressure. Values calculated by the original equation are close to the correct values for small percentages of gas for which it was derived but become increasingly erroneous as the gas content increases and are completely unusable at the very high gas con-tents employed in aerated mud. DERIVATION The nomenclature used is the same as in Strong's paper. The pres-sure dP exerted by a lamina of thickness dh at a depth h ft is ex-pressed by Eq. 1 where x = volume fraction of gas at depth h dP = D (l - x)dh . . . (1) When we express x in terms of the wellhead per cent gas n, the well-head pressure p and the pressure P at depth h, the result is Eq. 2. x = (np/p+p)/(100-n) + (np/P + p) When this is substituted in Eq. 1 and rearranged to separate the var-iables the result is dh = 1/D [dp + np/100-n dp/(P + p]. Integration between appropriate lim-its results in or if the wellhead is open so that p = 1 atm and we rearrange Eq. 4, the result is loss in head = hD — P = n/100-n In (P + 1) ...(5) Eq. 5 can be solved easily by successive approximation using hD as a first approximation for P on the right-hand side and calculating a first value for loss in head. This can then be used to get a new value of P using the left-hand side of the equation. Values converge very rap-idly even for quite large values of per cent by volume gas n. EXAMPLES The effect on bottom-hole pressure of 50 per cent gas cutting of the mud in a 5,000-ft well using 10 Ib/ gal mud will be calculated, we have: h = 5,000 ft 10 X 7.48 144 X 14.7 = 0.0353 atm/ft hD = 176.5 atm n = 50 Substituting these values in Eq. 5 and using hD as a first approxima-tion of P on the right, we have, approximate loss in head = 50/50 In (176.5 + 1) = 2.30 log 177.5 = 5.17 atm. We calculate a new value of P as follows:

A tentative 870°C isothermal section, the solidus equilibria, and the solubility of Tic and graphite in the nickel solid solution have been determined with arc-cast specimens. Each of the Ni-Ti intermetallics forms two-phase fields with Tic; only Ti,Ni has a measurable solubility for carbon. A quasi-binary eutectic exists between Tic: and a titanium-rich nickel solid solution; ternary eutectics occur on either side, with TiNis or with graphite. Graphite is in equilibrium with a nickel solid solution containing a ratio of Ti/C which increases below the solidus. DURING the past decade, titanium-carbide cermets containing nickel or cobalt alloy binders have been widely studied for high-temperature and wear-resistant applications. Recent work has emphasized control of the carbide grain size and distribution2's and the thermal exparision match between the phases/ The present study was initiated to determine the phase compositions during the sintering or infiltration process, and during subsequent heating. Although the effects of additives and impurities in commercial compositions are important, it was necessary to consider first the pure ternary, Ni-Ti-C. Emphasis was placed on the nickel corner, since the nickel solid solution is the continuous phase in compositions having highest strength. Early metallographic work by Zarubin and Molkov- showed that solid solubility at either end of the section Ni-Tic is small. Edwards and Raine reported that nickel dissolves between 3 and 5 wt pct Tic at 1250° C, on the basis of microstructures of annealed, vacuum-melted powder mixtures. Although the solubility of nickel in Tic has not been measured, Tic formed by the menstruum process in liuid-iron solution contains as little as 0.06 wt pct Fe. BINARY SYSTEMS The most recent determinations of the three binary systems are summarized in Fig. 1. Titanium carbide (6) is predominant among the binary phases, and it melts above the boiling point of nickel. The Ni-C binary is based on separate liquid solubility' ) and solid solubilitylo measurements. The eutectic temperature, 1328OC, is taken from the solidus determination described below. However thermal analysis data by Morrogh and williams also show eutectic arrests in this vicinity in the absence of supercooling. The Ni-Ti binary is taken from the work of Poole

The first bituminous coal cleaning-plant to use the sand-flotation process1 was placed in operation on Oct. 1, 1925, at the tipple of the East Broad Top Railroad & Coal Co., at Mt. Union, Pa. The general principles governing the design of plants of this type and typical operating results of anthracite sand-flotation units have been previously outlined.2 I will, therefore, confine myself to a description of this particular plant and to some of the elements of design it incorporates. The Original Mt. Union Tipple The plant was installed to transfer coal.from steel narrow-gage cars of 60,000 and 70,000 lb. capacity to standard-gage equipment. The coal was hauled about 30 miles from the East Broad Top field. This coa1, mined by the Rockhill Coal & Iron Co. and other operators, is a low-volatile slow-coking coal with ash of high-fusion point. It is normally a high-grade coal that does not contain an excessive amount of free impurities, but it requires careful handling to secure a fair domestic yield, and, naturally, the need for narrow-gage transshipment increases the difficulty of the problem. The narrow-gage cars were discharged into an 8-car track hopper equipped with two feeders passing the coal to two 42-in. apron intake conveyors. Twin units were installed throughout the original plant, two lump-and-egg shaking screens, two lump picking-tables, two egg picking-tables and two stoker conveyors. The stoker coal was loaded without cleaning. The loading tracks and booms were in duplicate and, with the layout as originally installed, either unit could be run independently, each unit shipping a different class of coal or both units making the same product.
