THE 144th* meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held in New York, Feb. 18 to 21, 1935. It consisted of the annual business meeting, 45 technical sessions at which 216 papers were presented (approximately the same number of sessions and papers as at the previous annual meeting), two sessions of the Board of Directors, three meetings of Section delegates, two formal lectures and two addresses, luncheon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for members and guests, six group dinners and eight group luncheons, ten committee meetings, the annual reception and dinner dance, an informal dance, a smoker-dinner and the annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary. Attendance was generally greater than for the two preceding meetings; the statistics follow (figures are in the order 1935-1934-1933); total registration, 1609-1534-1475; dinner dance, 577-543-426; dinner-smoker, 490-425-394; informal dance, 279-295-250; women's registration, 179-160-133; general luncheons, 1132-1034-734. The Coal Division held two general sessions on Monday and a symposium on coal-mine ventilation on Tuesday morning. The Committee on Bituminous Planning, Edward Steidle, chairman, presented a report at the Monday morning session. C. B. Huntress, President of Appalachian Coals, Inc., was the principal speaker at the luncheon on Monday, at which Eli T. Conner, Chairman of the Division, presided. Mr. Huntress was preceded by Howard N. Eavenson, President of the Institute, who spoke briefly. The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coal met Wednesday afternoon. A feature of the meeting concerning three Divisions-Iron and Steel, Institute of Metals, Petroleum-was the symposium on Use of Metals in the Petroleum Industry, Thursday morning and afternoon. Five of the papers presented at this symposium have been published in METALS TECHNOLOGY'. Another feature, of general interest, was the Tuesday morning session in the Auditorium, devoted to Federal Government and Mineral Industries. Dr. C. K. The original basis for the search for oil in Great Britain was described last year.t During 1937 the exploratory drilling by the D'Arcy Exploration Company, Ltd. has been continued. Three wells have been completed in the south of England and a fourth is nearing completion. In addition, test wells are now being drilled in Scotland and East Yorkshire. Southern England The test well on the Portsdown structure, which at the end of 1936 was drilling in the Lower Lias at 5792 ft., entered the Triassic at 6540 ft. and was completed in that formation at a depth of 6556 ft., without encountering further indications of petroleum. The Henfield well encountered the Lias at a depth of approximately 4090 ft., and after drilling 800 ft. of an argillaceous development of that formation entered a series of marls, breccias and conglomeratic limestones of the Carboniferous. Drilling was suspended at a depth of 5105 ft., in the latter formation. The consistently impermeable nature of the strata encountered in the Portsdown and Henfield test wells focused attention on the desirability of obtaining shore-line conditions of the Jurassic. With this end in view the Kingsclere anticline, a few miles south of Newbury in Berkshire, was selected for a next test. The Kingsclere well has now reached a depth of 5032 ft. in the Lower Lias and has encountered a full development of the Jurassic. With the exception of the Portland sand, which has a slightly greater porosity, and the Corallian, in which relatively great thicknesses of impervious limestone were met, conditions of sedimentation have been found to be comparable with those of the earlier wells. Small traces of petroleum have been found in cuttings and cores, but formation tests carried out at frequent intervals have yielded no flow of oil. In order to test the Corallian, from which series an outcropping oil sand had been found, a test well was drilled in a near-by anticline at Poxwell in Dorset. The Asientos-Tepezala district is in the north of the State of Aguasca-lientes, about 30 miles north of the city of Aguascalientes, the capital. The district is reached by a standard-gage railway on the west side through the junction, Rincon de Romos, which is on the main line of the National Railways of Mexico from El Paso to Aguscalientes. The terminal is Tepezala. On the east side a narrow gage connects Asientos with the junction, San Gil, on the main line, Asientos to San Luis Potosi. Tepezala on the west side of the Asientos hills is about 2 miles from Asientos on the east side. The area between the two mining centers is separated by a low subdued divide which forms the central part of the hills. The district is in a group of isolated hills surrounded by characteristic bolsón plains. The hills rise above the surrounding plains about 6500 to 10,000 ft.; the highest peak is Alta Mira. The two mining districts lie somewhat upon the flanks of the hills at about the same elevation, 7200 ft. The district is an old one and has been known since early in the 17th Century when the mines were worked by the Franciscan Monks. Their mining operations, which were limited to the oxidized ore above the water level, consisted chiefly in extracting silver from the Santa Francisca vein. To judge from the old workings and the remains of surface plant, the operations were on a large scale. By modern mining operations since about 1900, the various mines of the district have been one of the principal sourees of ore for the smelter located at Aguascalientes. Topography The topographic features of the Asientos hills are largely controlled by the character of the underlying rocks. During the Tertiary period, the entire group of hills was probably covered by extrusive volcanic material in the form of cones and lava flows. The central part of these have since been carried away by erosion, so that remnants have been left along the borders of the hills. These remnants form rather conspicuous peaks,

"The chief aim in style ought to be absolute precision", said Flaubert. "There is only one noun that can express your idea, only one verb that can set that idea in motion, and only one adjective that is the proper epithet for that noun." Let this be your motto. The engineer tries to be exact in all his measurements; he should measure his language with similar exactness. The technical term is a word of precision. It is not only precise, it is a word-saver. To the unscientific the earth is "a ball slightly flattened at the poles, something like an orange". To the scientific it is "an oblate spheroid". A similar contrast between the precision of the technical term and the vagueness of common words is afforded by a conversation between Ivanhoe and Rebecca: " ' What device does he bear on his shield?' asked Ivanhoe. 'Something resembling a bar of iron, and a padlock painted blue on a black shield.' 'A fetterlock and shacklebolt azure', said Ivanhoe"-using the technical terms of heraldry. It is good style in writing, however, to adapt your manner of expression to the intelligence and experience of the person or persons to whom the writing is addressed. The description of a mine should be worded differently according as it is intended to inform a mining engineer, a director, or a bishop. REMEMBER THE READER. It is as incorrect to write in a technical way for a non-technical reader as to write in a popular way for a technical or scientific reader. That style is best which enables the writer to place himself in the closest mental touch with his reader, to establish the maximum of sympathetic understanding. Let your precision be proportioned to your accuracy. You should not try to be precise in matters that do not admit of

The effect of copper on steel has been studied by numerous investigators. Before modern testing methods had been developed, blacksmiths noted red shortness in iron, the cause for which was ascribed to the presence of copper. Numerous papers have been published on the corrosion of steels containing various amounts of copper, and a few writers have discussed the effect of copper on the mechanical properties of steel. The purpose of the investigation described in the following paper was to obtain additional data on the mechanical properties of medium-carbon steel containing small quantities of copper. Among those who have published results of mechanical tests on copper steels are Ball,' who states that copper increases the tensile strength and hardness but lowers the elongation. Stead2 states that copper steels closely resemble nickel steels containing equivalent percentages of nickel, as regards tensile strength, resistance to shock, corrosion and hardness. Wigham3 found that copper in small amounts had no injurious effect on steel. Breui14 found that with 1 per cent. carbon, copper lessened the brittleness of steel and in low-carbon steel it increased the tensile strength and lowered the ductility slightly. H. H. Campbell5 states that copper up to 0.25 per cent. slightly raises the elastic limit, elongation and reduction of area.

THE custom milling plant of the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. is at Sahuarita, Arizona, approximately 20 miles south of Tucson. It is connected by a 2-mile railroad spur to the main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad between Tucson and Nogales. The capacity of the plant is 500 tons per day. The mill is conventional except perhaps in the rather wide variety of ores treated. These vary from straight copper ores, from which only one concentrate is produced, and lead-zinc or copper-zinc ores from which two concentrates are produced, to complex gold-silver-copper-lead-zinc ores, which require the simultaneous production of three or four concentrates. Custom ores are received in lots varying in size from a few truckloads to several carloads. Similar ores, after crushing and sampling, may be commingled, or individual lots may be milled individually. The ores are first dumped either into one of two 200-ton railroad bins, or into one of the two 75-ton truck bins. From these bins the lot of ore is individually crushed in a 24 by 16-in. jaw crusher to 3-in. size, and then to 1/2-in. size in a 3-ft Symons shorthead crusher. After crushing to 1/2-in., the ore is conveyed to the automatic sampling plant. This consists of three Vezin samplers in series, each successively cutting out 10 pct, to pct and 5 pct of its feed. After No. 1 sampler, the material passes through a mixing barrel and is then crushed to 1/4-in. in a set of rolls before passing to No. 2 sampler. Between No. 2 and No. 3 samplers, the ore is again mixed in a mixing barrel. The final sample, consisting of one pound per ton of ore, is taken to the laboratory, where it is further crushed to 1/8-in. in a coffeemill, and then riffled down to the size required for grinding in a pulverizer. The capacity of the crushing and sampling plant is up to too tons per hour, depending upon the character of the ore. After sampling, the ore is stored in five ore-storage bins, consisting of four 200-ton bins and one 175-ton bin. Each of these bins is discharged by means of belt feeders and conveyor to the ball mills, so that ores may be composited for milling in any required ratio, or milled separately by themselves. Fine grinding is done in one 6 by 4-ft Allis-Chalmers ball mill and one 8-ft by 36-in. Hardinge mill. These two mills both discharge to one 54-in. Akins Simplex Highweir classifier. The classifier sands can be returned to either or both mills, so that flexibility in grinding for different ores is easily obtained. Flotation equipment consists of four 66-in. Fagergren machines for copper-lead roughing and six similar machines for zinc roughing. THE application of electricity to the mining and beneficiation of the magnetic iron ores of the Mineville, N. Y., district, on Lake Champlain, has resulted in economies and enhanced quality of product, without which only a comparatively small quantity of the present output could be marketed. The output of the Witherbee, Sherman & Co. mines is about 700,000 tons per annum, and of this about four-fifths is treated by magnetic separation to increase the iron content and reduce the phosphorus. The use of electricity for the magnetic separation of the ore from the gangue is therefore of primary importance, and makes possible the application of electric power for mining and preparing the ore for concentration: The fact which speaks loudest in favor of the application of electricity is this: It is possible for about 25c. per ton of shipping ore to furnish all the power required to put the ore on cars. This includes mining a hard ore underground, from a depth of 900 ft., hoisting to surface, crushing to 4 or s in. in size, and separating from the gangue. This also includes lights about the works, and all miscellaneous power, such as about the shops. The first plant for the generation of electric power for use at Mineville was completed in 1903, and was one of the first for the application of electricity to mining iron ore. This was a Nordberg compound condensing steam engine, direct connected to a 750-kw. alternating-current generator, 3,300 volts, 3 phase, 25 cycles. All the plants added later use the same-current but with higher voltage. The map, Fig. 1, shows the power plants and the transmission system; Figs. 2 and 3 are views of the shaft houses and the mills.

Pulverized coal has been introduced at the anode where it is oxidized during the electrowinning of metals from their aqueous solutions This substitutes an electrochemical reaction between coal and water for the usual oxygen-evolving half-cell reaction at the anode, with the result that overall cell potential is significantly lowered and the consumption of electrical energy is correspondingly reduced. Experimental results are reported for electrowinning copper as an example of this novel modification of the electrowinning process in this example, the use of coal lowered the consumption of electricity by two-thirds of the requirement of the conventional process When the potential electrical energy of the coal consumed is considered the new, coal-assisted process consumes about 45% less energy, and the energy costs (combined costs of coal and electricity) are reduced by about 50%.

Ossi E. Palasvirta (Development Engineer, Oliver Iron Mining Diu., U. S. Steel Gorp.)—The authors are to be congratulated for their interesting article, which thoroughly illustrates the variables inherent in filtration of taconite concentrate. The work and the conclusions based thereon largely parallel the test work done by the writer at the Pilotac plant" and the experience gained with a commercial size agitating disk filter in the same plant. At Pilotac, however, a thorough study was also made of the effect of depolarizing (demagnetizing) the filter feed, and it is the purpose of this discussion to comment on the merits of depolarization of the magnetite concentrate prior to filtering. The work at Pilotac was done in three phases: 1) preliminary laboratory testing with a circular filter leaf of 0.047 sq ft, followed by 2) plant testing using a 4-ft diam, single-disk agitating filter that was purchased on the basis of the pilot tests on the 4-ft model. In the laboratory tests depolarization was achieved by slowly withdrawing' batches of thickened concentrate from a coil producing an alternating field of about 300 oersteds. In plant tests the standard Pilotac procedure' was employed, wherein the pulp falls freely through the depolarizing coil. The preliminary tests in the laboratory at first seemed to indicate that although depolarization of the filter feed decreases the cake moisture, it also tends to decrease the thickness of the cake, thus decreasing filtering rate. The tests with the 4-ft disk filter soon showed, however, that the compactness of the cake, attained during the form period because of depolarization, permitted a considerable decrease in drying time without any sacrifice in final moisture content. Thus, the filter could be operated at a much higher speed, and the overall capacity was higher than with magnetized feed. Because of the great compactness of the cake there was little shrinkage during the drying period, which prevented cracking and subsequent loss in vacuum. This in turn permitted operation with as thick a feed pulp as the diaphragm pumps could handle, eliminating the necessity of pulp density control. On the basis of these findings, the 6-ft agitating disk filter has been operated at 2 rpm, using feed pulps varying from 65 to 73 pct solids. Initially Saran 601 was used as medium, but it was later replaced with a relatively open, tight-twist nylon cloth. Filtering rates up to 750 lb per ft- er hr can be attained with feeds averaging about 70 pct- 270 mesh, and there is no trouble because of cracking. The cake moistures vary between 8.5 and 9.5 pct. To recapitulate, the merits of depolarizing the filter feed may be summed up as follows: 1) The well dispersed pulp shows less tendency to settle in the filter tank. 2) The homogeneous filter pool results in more even cake formation. 3) Because of absence of flocs, great compactness of cake is attained during the form period. 4) The cake does not tend to crack during the drying period. 5) A drier cake is produced. 6) A shorter drying period is necessary, permitting higher operating speed, which in turn results in increased capacity. 7) Density of the feed pulp can be kept as high as the equipment can handle. This increases capacity, since it is directly proportional to the percentage of solids in the pool. A few tests were also made to study the effect of chemical flocculants on filtration efficiency. Results showed that the effects of chemical and magnetic floc-culation were quite similar. Thus the use of a floccu-lant would impair rather than improve the filtering of magnetite concentrate. A. F. Palasvirta for his comments, particularly in view of the encouraging results obtained with demagnetized taconite concentrate. In our studies an attempt was made to evaluate the effects of depolarizing the feed to the plant filters by passing the slurry through a coil, similar to the method described by Palasvirta. Unfortunately, in our experiments there were no startling improvements in performance level, neither cake rate increase nor cake moisture reduction. However, when slow filter cycle speeds were employed, the filter cake tended to crack and the vacuum level dropped, resulting in an increase in cake moisture content. When demagnetized feed was used during slow speeds, no cake cracking was evidenced and the vacuum level remained constant. Thus the depolarizing coil was found necessary only in cases of cracking. It should be noted that most of our test work concerned a feed of 85 to 90 pct —335 mesh and about 60 pct by weight solids concentration. This contrasts with 70 pct —270 mesh and 65 to 73 pct by weight solids as noted by Palasvirta. Reviewing both sets of results, it might be concluded that depolarizing may be successfully employed to alleviate cake cracking tendencies and may markedly improve cake rates and moistures on the coarser taconite concentrates. Further investigations may disclose the exact relationship of grind and pulp density to the depolarizing action.

DRY oxidation of zirconium has been studied by several groups.'" The present work extends our early study1 to the high-temperature studies of Cubicciotti2 and Belle and Mallett.8 ulbransen and Andrew1 showed that the parabolic rate law fitted the 2-hr experiments between 200" and 425°C after an initial deviation. An energy of activation of 18,200 cal per mol was calculated. Cubicciotti,' in a study between 593" and 880°C, showed that the parabolic rate law fitted the data and an energy of activation of 32,000 cal per mol was calculated. In contrast to these studies on sheet specimens, Belle and Mallett3 studied the oxidation reaction on rod specimens and found a cubic rate law to fit the data.

INTRODUCTION Behavior of joints in rock and interfaces in structures and geological media subjected to static and cyclic loading play an important role in analysis and design of structures founded on rock and soil foundations. The objectives of this paper are (1) to describe a device that can permit laboratory testing of joints and interfaces under translational and torsional motions, (2) to present procedures for constitutive modelling of joints and interfaces with a typical example of modelling of a concrete-sand interface, and (3) to give brief details of the proposed research plans for cyclic testing and modelling of joints in concrete as a simulation of joints in rock. The subject of testing and modelling of interfaces and joints is wide in scope, and in view of space limitations, it is not possible to provide a comprehensive review herein. Hence, only a few references, particularly relevant to the ongoing research by the authors and co-workers are included; a review of the subject can be found in (Desai, 1981) and (Heuze and Barbour, 1982). Although there can be (minor) differences in modelling for the behavior of joints and interfaces, the basic procedures can be considered to be essentially similar. Now onwards in this paper, the term joints will be used to imply both joints and interfaces. HAVING been requested to prepare a paper referring especially to my patents as applied to blast furnaces, I shall confine my discussion to those improvements and inventions pertaining directly to the blast furnace itself, omitting a number of patents pertaining to blast furnace operations. I spent the early part of my life in the construction of blast furnaces, from rivet-heating to drafting and designing, much of the work relating to repairs and rebuilding. Later, as I became more interested in maintenance and operation of a group of blast furnaces, one fact especially made a lasting impression on me, namely that a very expensive piece of equipment was very short lived, and the expense of replacement, relining, etc., in many instances consumed most of the profits made while in actual operation. As far back as 1910, I began to lay plans to build with a view to permanency and not merely for a blast, the common expression at that time, which really meant only one or two years in southern practice. Since we did not then blow so hard most failures occurred in the bosh and hearth. The failure of either generally meant a complete new lining, as the inwall did not look good enough to last another blast. At that time we were using two types of hearth, one of heavy steel plate protected by well and sprays on the outside, and .one of heavy. cast iron, made in sections and bound together with wrought-iron bands. The former type proved dangerous, for if the iron should come through, as it frequently did, it would cut away the steel plate, quickly turning large quantities of molten iron into the water, causing a severe explosion and costly repairs. The cast-iron type gave trouble also by the iron finding its way through the joints between the sections, which was' not so serious; since the iron would not cut away the heavy cast-iron sections very quickly, and generally caused only small damage, and repairs-were easily made. Both types have been improved; the former by the introduction of cast-iron -water-cooled plates, placed on the, inside of the steel, jacket. This has proved to be very good construction, but has no real claim to permanency: As the cast-iron plates cannot be replaced from the outside, therefore the operator must assume that some time, at no late date, he must replace them from the inside, which will mean a blowing out of the furnace. In the following note, with the help of a new parameter of strain hardening, the attention is drawn to the close relationship between the relative performances of steels under plastic range cycling and their strain hardening characteristics. If a cantilever beam of rectangular cross section is tested with the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 in reversed bending between constant deflection limits at the lever head, the longitudinal strain-deflection hysteresis shown in Fig. 2 is obtained. There is no lateral strain due to constraint at the rectangular test section.' If the absolute value of strain undergone between a maximum state of tension and maximum state of compression is called A, it will be seen that A decreases with cycling rapidly due to the strain hardening in the test section and the ensuing change in the bent beam profile. It will also be seen that A reaches an approximately stable value around 10th cycle. If we call the first cycle strain range, A,, and that of 10th cycle, A,,, then is an index of the strain hardening capacity at a particular deflection level. A plot of n vs ? is reproduced in Fig. 3 for two ASTM steels: A-302 and A-201. A-302 is a low alloy structural steel, A-201 a low-carbon steel. The specimens were first normalized at 1650°F for 75 min then grooved with a milling cutter; and the notches were ground to 50G finish. The final operation before testing was a stress relief at 1150°F for 75 min. The behavior of the two steels changes around ?1 = 0.8 pct or A,, = A, -n = 0.7. If these curves are compared with the endurance life curves given in Fig. 4, it will be seen that the relative performance of the two steels also change around A,, =. 0.70 pct. The steel with lower strain hardening capacity (7) at a certain strain level shows a longer endurance life, irrespective of their strength levels. Since the exponent governs strain hardening at lower strain levels than the Modulus, the relative values of both parameters also coincide with the change in n values and the relative performances of the two steels at different strain levels. The history, development, subsurface geology, production, economics and estimated reserves are discussed in this paper. The Magnolia structure is an anticline with a known maximum structural relief at 372 ft., and the areal extent of the producing acreage is 4494 acres. Production is obtained from the Smack-over oölitic lime and 116 successful wells have been drilled. The field, which was developed on 40-acre spacing, has been under strict control. It is believed to be producing with a strong water drive, To date it has produced more than eighteen million barrels and the estimate of ultimate recovery is 220 million barrels. Early History The Magnolia field is in colurnbia County, Arkansas, T. 17 s., R. 19 and 20 W. Various geologists had long been interested in this general area, and as early as 1921, John F. Magale was able to define a surface structure. The first wildcat, one of the first in Columbia County, was drilled in 1923 by Mid-States Oil Co., in sec. 10, T. 17 S., R. 20 W. This well was about 11/2 miles northwest of the Kerlyn oil Company's discovery well and was based on surface geological work done by Jewel and Dobie. Subsequently, several shallow wells that were not carried below the Upper Cretaceous beds were drilled in the immediate area of the discovery well, but none of them contained any commercial showings of oil Or gas. In the latter part of 1935, Elam and Magale (or Southwood) Garrett NO. I was located in sec. 13, T. 17 S., R. 20 W., 3/4 mile east of the discovery well. It was drilled to a total depth of 4018 ft. in the lowermost Glen Rose beds but failed to obtain any showings of oil or gas. Interest had been stimulated in this general area, however, by the discovery of several oil fields, mainly Glen Rose oil production in the Rodessa field in Louisiana in 1935, Smackover lime productioil in Snow Hill in May 1936, production from the Cotton Valley formation in Schuler in 1937, and Smackover lime production from the Buckner field in November 1937. With this background and subsequent seismic work, which was carried on partly because the old shallow wells drilled in the township had shown evidence of closure in the Upper Cretaceous beds, the discovery well, Kerlyn Oil Company's Barnett No. I, Sec. 14, T. 17 S., R. 20 W., was originally projected to a total depth of 6300 ft., to test the equivalents of the Morgan sands of the Cotton Valley series, then producing at Schuler. The well was carried to a depth of 6325 It. and tested the objective beds without finding commercial production. In the meantime, however, one well had found production in the Jones sand and another in the Smaclrover lime at Schuler. Kerlyn immediately made arrangements to deepen the Barnett well to the Smackover lime. The top of the Smackover lime was encountered at 7618 ft. and the well
