Starting from Muskat's theory of water and gas coning, maximum permissible oil production rates without water and/or free-gas production have been determined, in a broad range of reservoir and well parameters, using the potentiometric model technique. The main assumptions made are as follows: (1) the reservoir rock is homogeneeous (either isotropic or anisotropic); (2) the volume of the aquifer underlying the oil zone is very small, so that it does not contribute to reservoir energy; and (3) the gas cap expands at a very low rate, so that it can be assumed to be in quasi-static conditions. The results obtained are presented in the form of diagrams which can be used for solving two types of problems: (1) given the reservoir and fluids characteristics, as well as the position and length of the perforated interval, determine the maximum oil production rate without water and/or free-gas production; and (2) given the reservoir and fluids characteristics only, determine the position and length of the perforated interval which optimize the maximum permissible oil production rate, without water and/or free-gas production. INTRODUCTION In oil reservoirs where the oil-bearing formation is underlain by an aquifer which does not participate in the production mechanism, water-coning is a limiting factor to the flow rates of producing wells. Production rates are usually kept to a value that will prevent the water from entering the wells. The entry of water into a well lowers its productivity by increasing the weigbt of the fluid column; moreover, the separation of water from the effluent, at the surface, may constitute a very difficult problem in cases of heavy viscous oils. A similar situation is encountered in oil reservoirs with a gas cap overlying the oil-saturated zone; here a downward gas cone is induced by the flow of oil towards the producing wells. Production rates must be low enough to prevent the gas from being produced; producing gas from the gas cap would be a waste of energy. Of course, water-coning and gas-coning phenomena can occur at the same time in the same reservoir if the oil-producing formation is both overlain by a gas zone and underlain by a water zone. Due to its relevant practical importance, the mechanism of coning was studied by many people.2,3,5-8 Defining the conditions for getting the maximum water-free and/or gas-free oil production rate is a difficult problem, often encountered under one of the following aspects: 1. Predict the maximum flow rate that can be assigned to a completed well without the simultaneous production of water and/or free-gas. 2. Define the optimum length and position of the interval to be perforated in a well, in order to obtain the maximum water and gas-free production rate. A systematic study of these problems was made by means of the electrical analog technique. The results of this study are presented here, under the form of a set of curves providing solutions for the above stated problems. These curves are valid only for homogeneous forrnations, either isotropic or anisotropic. Should the formation be non-homogeneous (by horizontal or vertical variation of permeability, shale diaphragms, fractures, etc.), a specific potentiometric study would be required for each specific case. Especially when shale diaphragms of some radial extension are present, the critical rates observed are much larger than would be expected from the diagrams. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM In the present study the aquifer is supposed to be of such limited volume that it does not contribute to the energy of the reservoir. Moreover, the gas cap is supposed to expand at such a low rate that the potential gradient in the gas cap is negligible. Under static conditions water-oil and gas-oil interfaces (T1 and T2) are both horizontal. When the reservoir production starts, below each well these interfaces take a cone-like shape (Fig. 1) having as an axis the axis of the well. This shape results from the equilibrium between potential gradients in the oil zone and gravitational forces due to density differences between oil and water and between oil and gas. Assuming the oil-bearing formation to be homogeneous and the oil to be incompressible, the analysis of the problem (see Appendix) shows that the oil-water and gas-oil interfaces are stable only if the oil production rate of the well is not higher than the following values.

The Ardlethan Tin Ltd. concentrator typically recovers 55% of the tin in a gravity concentrate at 51% grade from fresh ore assaying 0.5% Sn. Coarse gravity concentration is performed in a complex circuit involving Reichert cones, spirals, shaking tables and two regrind mills. The paper describes how flow and size-by-size sample data from a steady-state survey were used to construct a computer model of the plant involving 46 process streams. The data reduction involved a computer- aided mass balancing technique, recovery-size modelling of gravity concentrators and the use of a mineral dressing flowsheet simulator. The model was used to simulate possible rearrangements of the available equipment. Early simulations indicated that improved performance could be obtained by using spirals to-treat cone middlings or tailings rather than cone concentrates. A test spiral rig was used at Ardlethan to determine typical performances for all cone product streams and the results were incorporated in new simulations. A revised circuit was recommended and implemented by Ardlethan Tin as far as physical restraints within the plant would allow. Production figures show that a substantial increase in tin recovery and 10-15% increase in milling rate were achieved following the circuit changes, and these improvements were sustained over a six month period.

An optical and electron microscope study was made on a commercial 302 stainless steel heat treated for massive carbide precipitation. Convincirg evidence was obtained that the grain boundary precipitate does not grow away from the grain boundary into the matrix, but grows as a network of large thin dendrites in between the grains. IN austenitic stainless steels the carbon in supersaturated solution precipitates when the steel is heated in the temperature range 450" to 1000°C. During such heat treatments the chromium-rich carbide occurs primarily at the grain boundaries and has adverse effects on the corrosion resistance and low-temperature ductility of the material. It has been shown that the morphology of the precipitated particles differs widely depending on the time and temperature of the heat treatment, the nature of the boundary, the misfit between the grains, and so forth.1"5 It was assumed by Mahla et al.,' Streicher,' and Mc Nutt' that the carbide particles which nucleate in the grain boundary grow in various geometric or dendritic forms away from the boundary into the matrix. However, Kinzel,' Hatwell et a, and Plateau et aL4 found that the particles nucleate in the grain boundary and grow as a network of thin dendrites in the grain boundary interface. We have made a comprehensive studyg of the precipitation occurring in a commercial 302 austenitic stainless steel heat treated for times ranging from 0.15 to 1500 hr at various temperatures from 480" to 1065"~. This study was made to elucidate the influence of heat treatments on both the mechanical and the corrosion properties of this steel. Part of this investigation which is pertinent to the morphology of the grain boundary carbides referred to above is separately reported here. We found that the particles which nucleated in the boundaries grew in the interface of these boundaries, thus supporting the viewpoints of Kinzel,' Hatwell et al.,3 and Plateau et al.4 Furthermore, when carbide particles nucleated in the matrix very close to the boundaries, they possessed a morphology distinctively different from the particles growing in the grain boundaries. MATERIAL A study of metallographic samples and of fracture surfaces of a 302 stainless steel is reported in this paper. The composition and heat treatments are listed in Table I. Polished and etched samples were examined und813r the optical microscope, and carbon extraction replicas of etched micrographic samples and various fracture surfaces3'8'9 were examined under the electron microscope. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A representative optical micrograph of the 302 steel, condition A, is shown in Fig. l(a). Particles can be seen on the grain boundaries but no traces can be found of particles which grow from the grain boundaries into the matrix. A carbon extraction replica of this sample shows numerous large thin dendrites, Fig. l(b). The lateral dimension of such carbide particles vary up to 100 p, and their thickness estimated from the amoun! of electron penetration i:; between 500 and 1000A. Such large dendrites are extracted from almost all grain boundaries and, if they had grown into the grains, they would definitely be revealed by etching traces in the matrix, Fig. l(a). The reason why these large dendrites on the extraction replica appear to be grown into the grain is due to the mechanism of the extraction replica process. Thus, these dendrites are supported by the carbon replica film only at the edges originally along the grain boundary trace A-A, Fig. l(b), in the polished metal section and have subsequently fallen over onto the carbon replica film during handling. Although such dendrites generally fall only to one particular side of the grain boundary trace, one finds occasionally that parts of a dendrite have fallen to both sides, as shown in Fig. l(b). Further evidence for the growth of carbide in the grain boundary can be obtained from the appearance of fracture surfaces. ONE of the problems studied by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Washington has been the re-treatment of table middlings. Hydraulic classification has given the best results. Instead of using the classifier to prepare the feed to the tables, as has been the practise for many years in ore dressing, it is used to separate part of a middling product that cannot be re-treated successfully on the table. Middlings are desirable in a table plant because the separation according to specific gravity is incomplete; that is, in the products of the table there is always an overlapping of free particles of coal and refuse that can be distinguished with heavy liquids such as are used in the float-and-sink test. The causes of this overlapping may be divided into two groups, those outside the table separation itself and those inherent in the table separation. The first of these groups includes, among other causes, the following: (1) poor adjustments of the table, (2) overloading or underloading the table, (3) irregularities in the quantity and quality of the feed, (4) irregularities in the power and water supply, and (5) a vertical danc-ing motion of the table deck due to weak foundations. These causes of overlapping are largely unnecessary in a properly designed and constructed plant; but whenever they are present they materially affect the character of the middling product, and hence the problem of re-treatment. The other group includes three additional causes: (6) small differences in specific gravity between coal and impurities, (7) a size-specific-gravity relationship of the coal and refuse particles in the table feed such that the sizing action of the table opposes the separation according to the specific gravity, and (8) shapes of particles that prevent a separation. The sixth, small differences in specific gravity, may be a very important reason for an incomplete separation. The change in specific gravity from coal to shale is always gradual and the designation of one part as coal and another part as refuse is arbitrary. MINERALS used primarily for personal adornment and decorative purposes are called precious stones. To be so prized, the stones must possess beauty of color, must not be too common, and must be hard enough to withstand ordinary wear. If transparent, they must have brilliancy and fire. Almost one hundred minerals have been used as precious stones, the noble gems being the diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire; pearls are frequently included by courtesy. These gem stones, however, are sometimes equaled in beauty by fine opals, aquamarines, ourmalines, spinels, chrysoberyls (both cat's-eye and alexandrite), and spodumenes (hiddenite and kunzite). The Greeks, Romans, and medieval Europeans grouped together gem stones according to color and degree of transparency, and only as the niceties of mineralogy began to be known, about a century ago, was it realized how many different minerals have the beauty required of gem stones. Pliny, for example, did not distinguish between rubies and the red varieties of spinel and garnet, although he conjectured that the beryl and emerald were one mineral. GENERAL SURVEY Early man treasured bright colored berries, attractive shells, white teeth of wild animals and brightly colored pebbles, and used them as personal ornaments. In the eastern hemisphere, the earliest stones used were members of the quartz family (100,000 to 75,000 B.C.); then obsidian and amber (50,000 to 25,000 B.C.); the jade minerals, fluorspar and jet (22,000 to 7000 B.C.); turquoise (7000 to 3400 B.C.); lapis lazuli and garnet (prior to 3500 B.C.) ; emerald (2000 to 1800 B.C.) ; sapphire, ruby and diamond (800 to 500 B.C.). Indeed, gem mining is the oldest form of mining, and before any metals were known primitive man recognized about 18 gems and decorative stones. At first he sought them in stream gravels and residual deposits but by 3400 B.C. the turquoise mines of the Sinai Peninsula were operated. R. M. Raymond, New York, N. Y.—The filling and drawing down of the overhead material was done at considerable depth, which is not the usual method in which it starts at the surface.. R. J. Mechin.— It is a little more than 1000 ft. at El Bordo. The vein above had been caved practically to the surface and some of the ore had been excavated, using underhand and overhand square-set methods. This was far enough away from the shaft to prevent any bad effects. When the sill floor was taken out, to insure the old cave material following down well, we put chutes in the square sets for several weeks until we were sure that the material from above was moving down; on each level above, several crosscuts were driven into the old fill by which we could see the material coming down and thus be sure it was following the first. We had to dynamite it very little because it was dry and dusty. The only trouble was that timber starting from the old square sets would get across the chute and hang up. R.. M. Raymond.—HOW many floors did you operate at once? R.. J. Mechin.—We would operate one floor through the whole length and prepare for the second. F. W. SperR, Houghton, Mich.—Could you have worked it in steps? R.. J. Mechin.—Yes; but working it all on one floor was much better for ventilation. The passage between steps would tend to become heavy and blocked and, as the passages from the mining floor down are usually filled with ore, there would be no way for the air to pass up. The copper mines of the Katanga region in the Belgian Congo lie along the same mineralized belt as those of Northern Rhodesia. There are two distinct types of deposits in that belt, the dolomitic and the quartzitic. In the dolomitic type the metallic minerals are found in a dolomitic limestone country rock. Through oxidation and enrichment, large deposits of high-grade oxidized copper ores were formed, some of which are being worked by the Union Minière du Haut Katanga. Such deposits are all in Katanga. The quartzitic deposits are found in Katanga and Northern Rhodesia. Here the primary mineralization occurred in sandstones and quartzites, in horizons stratigraphically lower than the dolomites. These rocks are not favorable to secondary enrichment and the oxidized zone is poorer than the sulphide zone, which alone contains the ore. There are also in Katanga a few ore-bearing veins. One of them is being worked in the Prince Leopold mine at Kipushi. Prince Leopold Mine The Kipushi ore body fills a fault vein and invades the wall rocks more or less extensively by metasomatic replacement. The vein strikes north-northeast and south-southwest and dips to the west. The variable dip averages 60' to a depth of 300 ft., and more uniformly 80' below 400 ft. In the upper section the average width is 200 ft. and below the width is about 150 ft. The length of the ore body is 2300 feet. The eastern side of the vein—the footwall—is dolomitic and contains irregular masses of ore sometimes extending 100 ft. or more from the main

METALLIC manganese was first produced in 1773, by Sven Rinmann, a Swedish mineralogist. In 1799 William Reynolds, of Ketley, England, obtained a patent on the use of manganese dioxide in the manufacture of steel, and in 1808 an English patent was granted to John Wilkinson covering the use of manganese ore, or manganiferous ore, as an addition to iron ore in the blast furnace for the production of a superior grade of pig iron. Karsten showed in 1816 that manganese increased the hardness of iron without decreasing its malleability or toughness, while it caused pig iron to be more white in fracture and more fusible. The first practical application of manganese to steel-making, however, is attributed to Josiah Heath who discovered in 1839 (less than 90 years ago) that manganese conferred upon steel the properties of being more easily worked and welded under the hammer. When Bessemer invented the pneumatic process of steel-making which now bears his name he was at first successful because, as it afterward developed, he was using. a Swedish pig iron high in manganese. When his supply of this material ran out, he used a low-manganese pig from English sources and failed signally to produce a steel which could be rolled, while his Swedish licensees were continuing their successful application of his method. And it was not until Robert Mushet, in 1856, suggested the addition of manganese in the form of spiegeleisen to the molten product of the converter that success again came to Bessemer. In 1866, William Siemens patented the use of ferro-manganese as an addition to molten steel to counteract the bad effects of sulfur. It was in 1888, that Robert Hadfield published at some length his account of the effect of manganese as an alloying element in steel and described the unique properties of the now famous Hadfield manganese steel containing about 12 to 14. per cent. manganese and 1.25 per cent. carbon.

IN a recent paper the authors1 discussed the reactions to tempering of hypereutectoid steels quenched from 1000° C., as revealed by studies on changes in hardness, electrical resistivity, coercive force and metallo-graphic characteristics. The data, which related specifically to temper-ing temperatures of 550°, 650° and 710° C., for varying periods up to 125 hr., permitted the following important conclusions: 1. The rate of softening of the steels at the temperatures examined differed markedly although the steels were of "similar" general chemi-cal composition. 2. The temperature of maximum softening spread over a range from about 650° C. to the eutectoid inversion. 3. The divergence in behavior was ascribed, at least in part, to a profound difference in tendency to graphitization on annealing at sub-eutectoid temperatures. 4. The mode of spheroidization of the cementite, as revealed by metallographic studies, also varied considerably in the different steels. The purpose of the present investigation is to pursue further the study of the difference in behavior of the steels on tempering over a wider range of temperature. To this end the following features have received particular attention: 1. Comparison of temperatures of maximum softening of the various steels when the quenched samples were tempered for 5 hr. and for 75 hr. followed by furnace cooling and by quenching in water. 2. Determination of the effect of quenching temperature, prior to tempering, on the rate of softening. Quenching temperatures of 1000° and 850° C. were used in the investigations. 3. Examination of the microstructures obtained with the various heat-treatments employed.

The application of scientific methods to the investigation of natural laws and to the conduct of the useful arts which are founded upon them, is year by year mitigating the asperity and enlarging the outcome of human endeavor. More notably, perhaps, are these the facts in that system of productive and constructive arts of which engineering is the general name. In metallurgical engineering especially, within the period of our own recollection, how rapid has been the rate and how wide the scope of progress: the scientific discovery and mining of metalliferous veins; the economical separation and reduction of ores of every grade; the production and regulation of high temperatures; the varied improvements in the manufacture of iron, in saved heat and work, in uniformity and range of products; and, most important of all, the creation and the utilization, to be counted by the million tons a year, of the cheap constructive steels. Wonderful as this range and degree of development may appear to the public eye, the close and thoughtful observer must, nevertheless, conclude that neither the profession nor the craft of engineering may congratulate themselves too complaisantly, but that they should rather acknowledge to each other the embarrassing incompleteness of the union between engineering science and art. There is a small school of philosophers whom we may designate as original investigators, men who come close to nature, who search into first principles, and who follow that scientific and therefore fruitful method by which the relations of matter and force are discovered, classified, and brought within the reach of practice. These wonderful men do not indeed create the laws of nature, as they sometimes almost seem to, but they go up into the trembling mountain and the thick darkness and bring down the tables upon which they are written.

THERE is a disagreement among the various authors about the exact manner of transformation of ZrCr2. Rostokerl and others2 stated that ZrCr2 had a C-14 (MgZn2) type of structure below 1000°C and a C-15 (MgCu2) type of structure at temperatures above 1000°C. Alisova3 and others4 reached the opposite conclusion and stated that the transformation temperature is close to the melting point of ZrCr2. A literature survey shows that various investigators3'= who homogenized the specimens at a temperature higher than 1000°C have concluded that ZrCr2 had the C-15 structure at room temperature. Meanwhile, Jordan et al.4 reached similar conclusions without annealing the specimen. Other investigators1,2,6,7 who X-rayed the specimens in the as-cast condition without annealing reached different conclusions. The investigation reported herein was conducted with the aim of exploring the exact manner of transformation of ZrCr2 by various heat treatment tests. The alloys for this examination were prepared from iodide-reduced zirconium crystal bars, 99.9 pct purity, and electrolytic chromium, 99.9 pct purity. They were melted in a nonconsumable electrode arc furnace with water-cooled copper crucible in a helium atmosphere. The melting loss of each alloy was less than 1.5 pct by weight. Chemical analysis of a randomly selected specimen indicated that there was a very close agreement between calculated and analyzed compositions. Before being heat-treated each specimen was encapsulated in a vycor or quartz tube inside which an argon atmosphere was maintained at a pressure of lower than 1 atm. In determining the crystal structure of each specimen with a Debye-Scherrer camera, the standard procedure8 for X-ray quality analysis (Hanawalt method) was followed. The different series of heat treatment tests in this investigation are tabulated in Tables I and 11. The tests in Series I, specimens from 1-1 to 1-9, which were similar to Rostoker's experiment1 indicated that the transformation temperature seemed to fall between 870° and 900°C and that the crystal structure of ZrCr2 at lower temperature seemed to be of the C-14 type. However, once the compound is transformed to C-15 type, it is impossible to reverse the transformation back to the C-14 type by first heating the specimen above 900°C and then annealing it slowly below 900°C as shown in Experiments II-1 to II-3. Thus, it appears that the specimen of ZrCr2 will transform from C-14 to C-15 structure when heated above 900°C but will not transform from C-15 to C-14 when annealed slowly passing 900° C even after the extremely slow cooling process such as indicated in the experiment of Specimen II-3. As a valid transformation temperature is a temperature at which the transformation is reversible, therefore the temperature 900°C (or other temperature close to 900°C) is not the transformation temperature for ZrCr2 and the C-14 structure is not the stable structure of ZrCr2 at lower temperatures. The C-14 structure is retained at room temperature because the transformation to C-15 structure is very sluggish and the fast cooling after melting does not allow enough time for the transformation to take place. Additional energy is required to alter the metastable condition of the C-14 structure. The sluggishness of this transformation was again demonstrated through another series of experiments. Four specimens with C-14 structure were taken. Then they were annealed at 900°C but each specimen was soaked for a different period of time, Table 11. X-ray diffraction patterns of this group indicated that the C-14 structure gradually disappeared as the soaking period was lengthened. The figures listed under the column "C-14 Structure, pct" were estimated from the intensity of the d = 2.330 line of the diffraction pattern corresponding to the structure. Notice that the intensity of this line became weaker for longer soaking periods. To determine the transformation temperature of ZrCr2, specimens with C-14 structure (as-cast condition) were annealed at 1300°, 1400°, 1500°, 1550°, and 1600°C, respectively. A final specimen was first heat-treated to 1500°C in order to transform it to C-15 structure, then heat-treated at 1600°C again. From the X-ray analyses of this series of tests, Specimen Nos. III-1 to III-6, it is evident that a transition from C-15 structure at lower temperatures to the C-14 structure occurs at some temperature between 1550° and 1600°C.

On the banks of Huzzah Creek there is a roadhouse where a group of Ozark folks were whiling away a Sunday afternoon last spring. "How about some of that 'Who Broke the Lock Off the Hen House Door,' " suggested Spinny. The old man obligingly picked up the fiddle and began the sprightly tune. His long, seamed face had ruddy cheeks and a grey stubble jaw. A thick fedora was pushed back off his scraggly hair and he wore a heavy jacket. It was 73 degrees fetchin up for 75 on that May afternoon, so naturally he sweated. The Ozark is fiddling country. The natives, to whom a half dollar looks as big as a manhole cover, put great store by fiddling, along with the other fine things of life such as fishing and horse raising. On the wooded hills, 1200 to 1700 ft above sea level, there are numerous tumbling streams with plump fish, and in clearings along the roller coaster roads are long-legged, frisky looking horses. People in the Ozarks have a reputation for self-reliance. However, they are cheery and friendly to strangers. Trespassers are very seldom shot at-except if they do something wrong or by accident.

TWO references can be found in the literature concerning the ternary system uranium-tantalum -carbon. C. H. Schramm, P. Gordon, and A. R. Kaufmam reported in this Journal1 on the existence of the ternary carbide "UTa10C4." They also report a second face-centered-cubic carbide phase in the system U-Ta-C, which they denote as "white" phase. The publication includes a reproduction of a Debye-Scherrer powder photograph of "UTa10C4" and a list of the sin2 0 values of this compound. H. Nowotny, R. Kieffer, F. Benesovsky, and E. Laube2 report the complete solid solubility between TaC and UC with a B1 structure. Since the ternary phase "UTa10C4" lies very close to the binary system Ta-C, and the established phase Ta2C with a C27 structure had not been mentioned by Schramm et al., it was thought worthwhile to compare the patterns of "UTa10C4" with Ta2C. The strong lines of the given pattern were indexed on a hexagonal unit cell with the approximate cell parameters a = 3.09A and c = 4.93A. These are the values reported for Ta2C in the literature.3 The correspondence between reported and calculated sin2 8 values may be studied in columns 4 and 5 of Table I. The agreement is fair, but there remain weak lines which cannot be assigned to the hexagonal unit cell. The extinctions correspond to those of Ta2C, but a comparison of the calculated and observed intensities of the Ta2C lines (columns 2 and 3) with those of the corresponding lines of "UTa10C4" (column 6) show occasional deviations. To clarify this situation, four new samples were prepared. The compositions of these samples were chosen in such a way as to observe any existing ternary phase in the system TaC-UC-U-Ta. The samples were arc melted in an inert atmosphere and annealed at 1100°C for 36 to 72 hr. Compositions of the samples determined by chemical analysis are given along with the results of X-ray investigations in Table 11. The following conclusions may be drawn from these data: a) No ternary compounds occur in the section TaC-UC-U-Ta of the ternary system Ta-U-C. The "white" phase reported by Schramm et al. corresponds to a solid solution between TaC and UC. Only one three-phase field exists: C27-B1-A2. (Both tantalum and ? uranium have body-centered-cubic A2 structures.) In 1972 Kennecott Explorations, Inc. conducted a three month cruise to the central Pacific as part of a study of deep-ocean manganese nodules. One of the objectives of the voyage was to collect at least 200 tons of nodules for use in extractive metallurgy research and various engineering tests. It was determined to cut off production at a maximum of 200 tons, should we reach that amount before the end of the 38 on-station days. We were able to reach that goal; 200 tons of nodules were collected, representing an average return of 2340 lb from 171 dredge runs. Once equipment and techniques were refined, normal returns consistently exceeded 2 tons per haul. Up to this time, Kennecott had sampled extensively with the use of small free-fall devices using wire rope and winch equipment. These devices have never offered a viable method for collecting nodules in bulk, and we sought to develop a dredging capability which would give some assurance of meeting future requirements with efficiency and economy. After testing a series of increasingly complex dredge designs at sea, it was decided to utilize two of the simpler configurations, which after modification provided the basic design for the dredge used.

When an ore deposit is evaluated on the basis of core sampling, questions always arise as to how much weight should be given the various sample grades and how the deposit should be divided into specific volumes assigned to corresponding grades. For a tabular deposit it is customary to use the so- called zone-of-influence. This zone is usually de- fined as the polygon in the plane of the deposit having corners halfway between a given core drill intersection and each of the nearest neighboring intersections. The volume of the ore in this polygon is assigned the analysis obtained from the drill core taken at the intersection. In massive or irregular deposits, volumes of various shapes may be defined with respect to the locations of drill core samples. These volumes may be regarded as three-dimensional zones-of-influence; the theory involved in assigning the values of the central analyses to the ore in the volumes is the same as that used in the case of a tabular deposit. INTRODUCTION Situated 23 miles east of Pretoria the Premier Mine started diamond production in 1903. Two years later it produced the largest diamond yet discovered, the 3 106 carat Cullinan stone. For the period to 1932 when the mine was closed down due to economic circumstances, open cast mining was practised using inclined rope haulage traction and by this time had produced 48.5 million carats of predominantly industrial quality diamonds from 148 million tons of ore. In 1945 it was decided to re-open the mine using underground mining methods. A system using long hole benching was devised (Hodgson and Sewel 1960). This system was later modified but still forms the basis for approximately fifty percent of production. Following the successful introduction of block caving on associated diamond mines in the Kimberley area (Gallagher and Loftus 1960) this mining method was introduced to the Premier Mine in the late 60's and now accounts for nearly 50% of production. This paper will discuss block caving at Premier Mine in the light of our experience and discussion will be directed to the main geological and structural features of the orebody and host rocks and the related constraints imposed on the mining methods. Reference is made to the long hole benching mining method for comparative purposes. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONS The ore from the block caving and bench mining areas gravitates via ore passes to a twin haulage, 500m below surface. Electric 13 tonne locomotives, each hauling a train of 10 Granby type cars, deliver the ore to two 42" x 48" (1.06m x 1.22m) jaw crushers. The ore is reduced in size to minus 0.15m before being hoisted to the treatment plant on surface. Hoisting is done with 12.5 tonne bottom discharge skips in a five compartment rectangular shaft using two 3 240 H.P. semi automatic Ward Leonard winders. A small single drum service winder operates in the other compartment. Men and materials travel in a separate shaft in a 5,4m x 2,8m cage operated by a Koepi winder. These two shafts are also the main intake airways to the mine. The two main extraction fans capable of 250 m3/s at 3,2 kPa are situated on surface and are connected to the underground workings by an incline and a network of air passes and return airways. GEOLOGY Although there are numerous occurrences of kimberlite bodies in the district, the Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is the only economic orebody. It is roughly oval in shape with surface dimensions of 900m on the long axis and 450monthe short axis. The surface area is 320 000 m2. The kimberlite has intruded a massive body of felsite and norite which is intersected by a number of faults. The contact between the kimberlite and host rock is clear cut and dips inward at an average angle of 80°. Cutting across the pipe and the country rock is a 75 metre thick gabbro sill, the top of which intersects the pipe below the 347m level and dips at 15' to the north west. The kimberlite has been metamorphosed a distance of some 20m both above and below the sill contacts. Age measurements on biotite from the gabbro date the sill as 1 115 million years, thereby providing a minimum age of the pipe. (Pre Cambrian). All other pipes in South Africa are of Cretaceous age (60 million years). A simplified geological plan and section of the Premier Mine orebody is shown in Figure 1. It is thought that the kimberlite intruded in at least three distinct phases. The kimberlites of these different phases can be distinguished most easily by their characteristic colour. BROWN KIMBERLITE. This is the oldest kimberlite and forms a crescent shape in plan on the south eastern side of the pipe. In depth it increases in relative area. Although the brown kimberlite carries the highest diamond grade in terms of carats per ton all the various kimberlites in the Premier pipe are economic to mine.

A KNOWLEDGE of the fundamental principles of locating, sampling, testing and evaluating materials is essential in prospecting for mineral aggregates. In this discussion, mineral aggregates will be considered sand, gravel, crushed stone and slag that are used as materials of construction. The quantity of mineral aggregates produced in the United States during the year 1935 for such purposes was roughly 165,000,000 tons, about 60 per cent of which was sand and gravel, 37 per cent crushed stone and 3 per cent crushed slag. The total value of this material was approximately $100,000,000. It is apparent therefore that the prospecting for suitable mineral aggregates is of considerable economic importance. In prospecting for mineral aggregates, the methods employed are the same whether the organization is large or small. In the large organization there may be available geologists for locating sources of supply, a land acquisition department to arrange for the necessary options or permits, engineers to do the sampling, a laboratory for testing, and a board of consulting materials engineers to make the final selection. Even small organizations must follow the same general procedure, though the responsibility for the selection of aggregates may rest with one man, who may or may not be an engineer, but who must depend entirely upon his own judgment. LOCATING THE SUPPLY The initial step in prospecting for mineral aggregates is the locating of suitable, adequate and economic sources of supply for the project in mind. Commercial plants in the vicinity should be investigated and a survey made of the existing structures that have been built of aggregates from these sources. If the structures are rather old and show no signs of deterioration, it is fairly good evidence that the aggregate is satisfactory. The capillary-reservoir technique was used with lead-210 and cadmium-115m to determine the self-diffiLsion coefficients of both cadmium and lead in the liquid binary Cd-Pb system. The self-diffusion coefficients of pure cadmium and pure lead were obtained and were compared with the theoretical predictions. Good to excellent agrement between the experimental and predicted values was obtained. The self-diffusion coefficients of cadmium were tneasuved in alloys containing 2.50, 9.13, 17.40, 31.00, 45.00, 69.00, and 97.00 lot pct Cd by determining- the amount of cadniiutn-115m which diffused out of a small-bore capillavy into an infinite reservoir during- a given time peviod. Sinzila7-measurements were made with lead-210 to determine the self-diffusion coefficients of lead in these identical alloys. Diffusivities were determined from measurenzents performed in the temperature interval of 290" to 480°C. The results were correlated with the Ar-vhenius equation, and the maximum variation of the equation parameters (Q and Do) was also inrestigated . THE theory of diffusion in liquids, particularly liquid metals, is relatively undeveloped in contrast to that for the gaseous and solid states. Although the practical application of liquid metals as heat-transfer media has become increasingly important, few liquid-metals systems have been investigated. Experimental data of fundamental significance in this field are not readily obtained, which may explain but not justify the present lack of knowledge. What work has been completed is primarily restricted to liquid diffusion of pure metals; little work has been done in liquid-metal diffusion of binary mixtures. A review of liquid-metal diffusion theory and research is available elsewhere.1-4 In an effort to add to the knowledge of liquid-metal systems and to increase the basic understanding of the diffusion process in liquids, a study of diffusion in the binary-liquid system, Cd-Pb, was undertaken. The capillary-reservoir technique5 was employed to measure the self-diffusion coefficients of cadmium and lead in molten binary alloys. Measurements were made with seven selected compositions and over a temperature range from 290° to 480°C. The experimental apparatus consisted essentially of the following items: constant-temperature bath, diffusion cells, capillaries, capillary-filling device, and a radioactive tracer counting system. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS Constant-Temperature Bath. A cylindrical steel vessel, 8 in. in diam and 15 in. deep, surrounded by an insulated heating coil was used with a sodium-potassium nitrate salt mixture heating medium. The bath was maintained slightly below the desired control temperature by the furnace-heating element; and a 250-w heater, actuated by a Bayley proportional temperature controller, was utilized for the final control of the temperature. A constant-speed mixer stirred the salt to insure a uniform temperature within the bath. Four calibrated Chromel-Alumel thermocouples were placed at various positions in the salt bath to verify the absence of temperature gradients. The observed temperature variation during any diffusion run was less than 0.l°C. The entire furnace assembly was mounted on four shock absorbers to exclude building vibrations and the stirrer propeller blades were adjusted so not to induce vibrations within the reservoir. A schematic diagram of the furnace and the constant-temperature bath is shown in Fig. 1. Diffusion Cell. The diffusion cells and associated parts were the same, except for slight modification, as the one used by walls1 in this laboratory, and are shown in detail elsewhere.' A graphite crucible, 4 in. long and 40 mm (1-1/2 in.) ID, enclosed in a 60-mm (2-1/4 in.) Pyrex tube cell about 18 in. long, was used as a container for the melt. The reservoir (molten alloy in the graphite crucible) was usually about 2 to 2-1/2 in. deep. Graphite was used because of its satisfactory nature as a refractory material and the low solubility of carbon in molten Cd-Pb alloy.677 The Pyrex cell was closed at the bottom and fitted at the top (open end) with a 2-in. Dresser coupling. A brass flange was welded to the top of the coupling. The upper part of the diffusion assembly was bolted to this flange with an O-ring seal. The lower part of the diffusion cell was supported in a 3-in. brass cylinder which was open to allow for circulation of salt around the cell. The top assembly consisted of two synchronous motors, a drive shaft, a thermocouple well, and controlled-atmosphere inlets and outlets. One motor was used for rotation of the capillaries at a rate of 1/2 rpm in the reservoir during the diffusion run. The other motor was used for the vertical positioning of the capillaries and the capillary holder by means of a simple screw drive. The capillary holder and drive assembly were lowered into the reservoir for the run and raised after the desired diffusion time at a rate of approximately 0.4 in. per min.
