In the earliest days of mining coal the obvious method was by bord and pillar working. Longwall in Britain developed from this as an expedient to overcome bottlenecks arising from ? 1) increasing depth of seams causing roof control difficulties; and 2) ventilation problems. This system became almost universal particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. Coal getting in these faces was usually by pick and shovel, filled into small waggons of up to 15 cwts capacity. These waggons ran on rails laid alongside the coal face and were often taken away from the face to the main haulage roads by horses. The roof was supported by rigid props and the wastes were normally controlled by strip packing. This system of mining was very flexible and worked well down to sections of about 3'6"

If a fire occurs outby an underground coal mine section, the immediate safe evacuation of miners from the working section should always be the first action during the rescue operation. Unfortunately, in many cases, the escape-ways (escape routes) dedicated for miners' evacuation are contaminated with fire byproducts from adjacent entries. The purpose of this paper is to present the ventilation control process that will maintain the escape-way free from contaminants and available for travel. Several scenarios in a different section on ventilation system arrangements are analyzed, discussed and presented. To perform these studies, the author used a mine-fire simulator, which provides a dynamic (in real time) representation of the fire's progress and also gives a display, a color-graphic visualization, of the spread of combustion products throughout the ventilation system. Presented and discussed in this paper, also, are ways in which the mine-fire simulator can be used as a training and teaching tool for miners and, particularly, for ventilation and safety personnel.

This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. Firstly, the talc sample was wet ground in a stirred media mill for five different times (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35, and 50 μm), solid content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%), and sonication time (60, 120, and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50), reduction ratio, and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were perfectly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on structural properties of talc particles were characterized by XRD analysis.

Steven Tubbs From mine to farm is a long journey for Florida's phosphate, but it is an important one to the American farmer who uses phosphate fertilizers to replenish the soil and produce the crops which eventually wind up on the American dinner table. In this phosphate-food connection, transportation plays a vital life-giving role, a role that is unique because of the large quantities of phosphate produced and the mineral's location in relation to its markets. Florida Leads World Florida is the world's largest phosphate producer, supplying 80% of the nation's and a third of the world's annual total. About 95% of Florida's phosphate goes into agricultural chemicals, with 90% going into fertilizers. Phosphate production is primarily concentrated in west central Florida, with the exception of mining and processing in north Florida by Occidental Chemical Co. The phosphate rock is beneficiated at the mine sites and then is transported out of Florida in a raw state, or to one of the industry's 18 chemical complexes where it is processed further. In 1981, Florida produced more than 42 Mt (46 million st) of phosphate rock-a 1% decrease from 1980. The industry also produced more than 12 Mt (13 million st) of phosphate chemical products in 1981 and transported them to both domestic and foreign customers. This year, the state's phosphate production and shipments are substantially lower than recent annual levels because of a depressed worldwide phosphate market. With production down slightly in 1981, shipments declined and company inventories increased dramatically. Phosphate-related shipments through the port of Tampa alone fell 20%. As a result, in 1982, phosphate operations cut production to reduce inventories. According to the Fertilizer Institute, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1982, phosphate rock production fell 18%; phosphate rock shipments, 28%; finished fertilizer production, 30%; finished fertilizer shipments, 25%; and phosphate rock exports declined by 20%. Despite depressed conditions, Florida phosphate production and shipments are expected to increase in the near future with more rock being processed into fertilizer products. Visible-wavelength and near-infrared multispectral image cubes for the Animas River Watershed from Hermosa, Colorado to the headwaters at Animas Forks, Colorado were acquired on June 18, 1996 using the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's AVIRIS (Airborne Visible and InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer) instrument (Green et al., 1998). These image cubes have been analyzed using the USGS Tetracorder V3.4 implementation (Clark et al., 1995), an expert system which utilizes a database of more than 300 laboratory spectra of endmember minerals and mineral mixtures to generate maps of mineralogy, vegetation coverage, and other material distributions. Major iron-bearing, clay, carbonate, and other minerals were identified along with several minerals associated with acid-generating hydrothermal systems including pyrite, jarosite, alunite and goethite. Additionally, distributions of alkaline minerals such as calcite and chlorite indicate a relation between acid- buffering assemblages and stream geochemistry within the watershed.

Canada's coal production is approximately 65.4 million tonnes of which 95 % is produced by surface mining methods mostly from the three Western provinces (British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan). The mines are highly mechanized; productivity gains during the past few years have ranged from 60 -80%. Truck/Shovel methods are common although Saskatchewan lignite is almost exclusively mined by draglines. This paper provides an overview of Canadian Coal mining industry vis a vis surface mining. Emphasis is on application and utilization of mining equipment and associated mining methods.

The distribution of mercury in soils, rocks, and ore was studied in three areas of the Pachuca-Real del Monte District: (1) An area north of the town of Pachuca where ore veins have been found at or near the surface. The mercury content of soil samples taken near the vein zones is far above the background value. The highest value was 1900 ppb (parts per billion) mercury in a soil sample above Veta Vizcaina; the background is about 50 ppb Hg. (2) In the area north of the town of Real del Monte where only a few of the veins are known to crop-out. Regardless of exposure, soils collected over veins show anomalous mercury values ranging from 250 ppb to 1900 ppb. (3) In an area south of the town of Real del Monte. Here, although vein outcrops are lacking, mineralization is known at a depth of about 120 m. All soil samples taken at 50 m. intervals along an east-west traverse contain anomalous amounts of mercury, with peaks corresponding with the known location of the veins.

There are presently in use many grinding mill control schemes and concepts. This paper presents one operating method of controlling the particle size of the cyclone overflows for proper metallurgical results and controlling the level of the cyclone feed sump and new feed rate to obtain lowest unit cost of finished (ground) material which is usually at the maximum grinding mill throughput. This system stresses simplicity of field instrumentation and control strategy. Both of these factors lead to better operator understanding and acceptance. The low capital investment of this system also makes it more attractive at the Buick Concentrator when compared to other more complicated systems utilizing mass flow measurement and a computer to calculate circulating load and infer particle size. Furthermore, it has the advantage of utilizing an actual measurement for control, rather than a difficult-to-maintain inferred value. There are several reasons for maximizing mill throughput at Buick. The milling rate before automatic control was too low when compared to mill throughput increases planned for the future. Through this new operating system, it appears Buick will not have to make major changes of mill motors and speeds to meet the increased? production rate. Also, since power costs continue to escalate, it is desirable to maximize the throughput to the grinding circuit and reduce overgrinding to achieve a reduction in power cost per ton of ore milled. Presently, 45% of the concentrators' total power is consumed in this grinding circuit.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the response characteristics of commercially available gas, smoke and flame sensors to fires of common combustible mine materials. The experiments were conducted in the large-scale fire gallery located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory in Fairchance, PA, using ponderosa pine, red oak, Douglas fir, high and low volatile coals, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) conveyor belts, No. 2 diesel fuel and diesel exhaust. All the experiments (except those using No. 2 diesel fuel and the diesel exhaust tests) were conducted in a similar manner, with combustible materials heated rapidly by electrical strip heaters, producing smoldering fires that quickly transitioned into flaming fires. The sensors included a diffusion-type carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, photoelectric- and ionization-type smoke sensors, a video smoke/flame detector and an optical flame detector. Simultaneous measurements were obtained for average gas concentrations, smoke mass concentrations and smoke optical densities in order to quantify the levels of combustion products at the alert and alarm times of the sensors. Because the required sensor alarm levels are 10 ppm and 0.044 m-1 optical density for CO and smoke sensors, respectively, the different sensor alarms are compared to the time at which the CO and smoke reached these alarm levels (Litton et al., 1991). In addition, the potential impact of using smoke sensors that have met the performance standards from accredited testing laboratories is also evaluated using the response of an Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL)-approved combination photoelectric/ionization smoke detector. The results are discussed relative to fire sensor needs that can have a positive impact on mine fire safety.

This paper describes the research con-ducted on bit wear and respirable dust generation conducted by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and West Virginia University (WVU), a member of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust. The USBM investigated wear, energy and dust characteristics of various conical bit designs when cutting rock. WVU studied the functional relationships between wear, cutting force, energy, and dust of one conical bit type when cutting coal. The objective of the USBM study was to identify qualitative bit selection guidelines for cut-ting rock; WVU's research objective was to determine optimum bit replacement guidelines. These research studies both found that bit geometry (a function of bit design and wear) influences energy consumption and dust generation. Bit selection and replacement recommendations are given.

A naturally aged and synthesized manganese oxide-coated granular media was found in our laboratory to have the capability of the removal of soluble Mn(H) from mine drainage by adsorption and oxidation. Mine drainage commonly also includes other heavy metal ions. Extending this principle, this paper presents the removal of heavy metals including lead, copper, cobalt, zinc and nickel in the aqueous solution by using the synthesized manganese oxide-coated granular media. It was found that the adsorption of lead, copper, cobalt, zinc and nickel on the manganese oxide-coated media follows both Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherms except in the concentration range less than 0.1 mmole/L. The adsorption mechanism involves the ion exchange between the heavy metal ions and synthesized manganese oxide coated on the media. The synthetic manganese oxide surface has a strong metal binding ability to the heavy metals in the order of Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Zn2+ > C02+ based on the adsorption results using batch and continuous column operations. The breakthrough curves of these heavy metals showed that the synthesized media could be used effectively in the removal of these heavy metal ions in a cell or packed column. The process can simultaneously facilitate the immobilization of the heavy metals on the synthesized manganese oxide coated media. A subsequent pH adjustment dislodges the heavy metals and regenerates the synthetic media. Thus, the process accomplishes the adsorption, immobilization and concentration of the heavy metal from waste stream in one monolithic procedure.

The three-dimensional finite element technique combined with the progressive failure approach was utilized to simulate stress distributions in a mine section which occur in response to a longwall mining operation. Due to the availability of the Cray supercomputer, a large-scale three-dimensional finite element model was developed for the analysis. The Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which describes a realistic behavior of rock masses, was used for the simulation of progressive failure. A comparison of calculated and monitored stresses in the mine has shown that the model gives a good representation of stresses in the mine structure.

When the Middle Ages were drawing to an end and Rotterdam, then still a small fishing port, began to extend its trade relations to continental ports handling general cargo, a development was initiated which was to give Rotterdam a predominant position in maritime traffic in Europe 300 years later. Despite many setbacks and the silting up of the mouths of the Rhine and Meuse rivers, the port experienced a new rise towards the end of the previous century after the dunes at Hook of Holland had been cut through as planned by Dutch engineer Caland. With its favourable location in the mouth area of the Rhine and a hinterland opened up by waterways it was merely a matter of the city council pursuing a far-sighted policy to make the best of these natural advantages. Thus new port installations were erected on the southern bank of the Meuse in the first quarter of this century, which were expanded in the course of the subsequent decades. The New Waterway became the main artery for industrial enterprises, in particular oil industries, which sprang up along its banks (picture 1). Whereas 30 years ago Rotterdam's Waalhaven, with its new jettees for general cargo and mainly bulk goods, was still one of the most modern terminals, the growing size of ships, which increased by leaps and bounds for tankers, in particular towards the end of the 'fifties, necessitated much larger harbour facilities built further and further towards deep water.

Environmental concerns and increasing mine development costs have created a need for early information on gold recovery from its host environment. The habit, association, and approximate abundance of minerals which contain unacceptable metallic ions which may be released during process of concentration of gold should be identified in exploration drill core. One case of a "clean" gold orebody is described to show that early petrographic studies contributed to a rapid decision to mine a small deposit by open pit and to custom mill the ore in an already restricted effluent environment. A second example describes identification of an undesirable mercury content and resulting action taken.

The Gross Rosebel gold deposits are located in the Guiana Shield of north central Suriname. Initial discovery of surficial gold in 1880 by local artisanal miners preceded small-scale mechanized mining from 1885 to 1939. The first systematic exploration program was carried out by Placer Development from 1974 to 1977. In May 1992 Golden Star Resources optioned the property. Initial shallow reconnaissance diamond drilling of the extensive surface geochemical anomalies intersected sporadic gold mineralization with no apparent continuity between drill sections. Successive deep augering, trenching and systematic grid drilling based on information from surface mapping allowed development of a preliminary geological model. Further drilling of specific structural-lithologic targets and more complete synthesis of geological data from the trenching and deep auger sampling added to the geological model and defined the multiple controls of gold mineralization. Carefully planned infill drilling on a tighter grid spacing resulted in progressive definition of reserves within six discrete gold deposits. In a complex geological setting, the key to success at Gross Rosebel was persistent, systematic exploration, detailed mapping, careful core logging and perceptive geological interpretation. Reserves now stand at 48.6 Mt at 1.6 glt Au, or 2.4 million ounces of gold. The purpose of this paper is to describe the progression of exploration activity that led to the definition of substantial gold reserves and to summarize the geology of the deposits.

"Western Coal" in this paper is limited to those deposits of subbituminous coal and lignite in the States of Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota. The characteristics of the coal are discussed as well as the history of mining and current mining operations for steam coal. The future of the region is tied closely to the ultimate conversion of coal to oil and gas products. Problems of industrial water supply and environmental considerations are covered together with a brief review of current legislation's actions affecting strip mining.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. Drilling programs and the study of active geothermal systems have shown that the reservoir rocks in many fields contain minor quantities of base and precious metals. Commonly, base-metal sulfides occur in the subsurface but, where present, Au, Ag, Hg, As, T1 and Sb rich precipitates deposit near, or at, the surface. Although in some fields (Geysers, Larderello, Tongonan) some of the ore minerals (and others) are relict, there is evidence that they are now depositing in a few systems. Recent work on active hydrothermal systems in New Zealand shows that: (1) Sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite (forming veins and disseminated discrete crystals) plus rare pentlandite, cobaltite and arsenopyrite, occur at Broadlands, NZ. Rare quantities of base-metal sulfides also occur in cores and cuttings from the geothermal fields of Waiotapu, Kawerau, Tauhara, and Ngawha. Further, Kakimoto (1983) has identified cassiterite, native silver, and trace gold in cores from Tauhara, in the south-eastern part of the Wairakei field. Bore temperatures at the depths from which these minerals were recovered are mostly between 220° and 300°C, but at Broadlands are locally as low as 120°C. The host rocks are Quaternary talc-alkali, silicic lavas and pyroclastic rocks, andesites, dacite and deep Mesozoic greywackes and argillites; however, there is no obvious relationship between mineralization and stratigraphy, permeability or well output. (2) The deposition of amorphous precious metal precipitates (Au, Ag, Hg, As, Sb, T1) from hot springs and well discharges has taken place at Broadlands, Waiotapu and Rotokawa; it also occurs at Kawerau. (3) Water discharging from Frying Pan Lake, Waimangu, is presently depositing siliceous sinter containing up to 4.1% tungsten. A characteristic of mineral-depositing fluids in the New Zealand geothermal fields is their very low salinity (total dissolved salts of 3000 ppm or less but with high CO2); they are of near- neutral alkali chloride composition, although water discharging from Frying Pan Lake has a pH of 4.5, and very low metal contents. Very effective concentration processes (10 times for gold at Broadlands) must occur: in the subsurface these include boiling and rapid cooling but near, and at, the surface, mixing of waters of different pH seems to dominate. In particular, descending acid condensate, derived from separated steam and oxidation of H2S mixes with its parent alkali chloride water, resulting in precipitation of amorphous ore metals. Base-metal sulfides also occur in veins and as disseminated grains in geothermal fields at Tongonan, Leyte and Southern Negros, Philippines. These fields have a porphyry-type setting with host rocks of Miocene andesitic lavas and pyroclastics intruded by diorites so that the fields have undergone complicated thermal histories before cooling to their present base temperatures of about 325°C. Precious metals have precipitated from waters from some wells (Leach, pers. comm.) but they do not, as yet, form ore-grade deposits.

How is the Government's oil import control program doing? In July 1954 Mr, Eisenhower established the Cabinet Committee on Energy Supplies and Resources Policy. On July 29, 1957, the Administration imposed "voluntary" company oil import quotas on American oil importers to maintain "a healthy domestic (oil) production industry" and safeguard "national security." On March 10, 1959 the President by proclamation made the voluntary program mandatory. But study of the program in practice shows that it is not working out as expected and-that there is some doubt that its aims and other related Administration purposes are being achieved. Take the Administration's anti-inflation policy. To be sure, the President apparently recognized in his March 10th proclamation that in restricting cheap imported oil in favor of more expensive-domestic oil he was making the inflation fight that much harder, for he called for Government surveillance of domestic oil prices to prevent them from getting out of hard, And indeed while domestic crude oil prices have not risen appreciably during 1959 neither have they fallen appreciably (although there has been some price weakness in the past few weeks).

Expansion of the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant requires interconnection of three operating pump stations using only two existing 10-ft diameter shafts for access. These two existing shafts require additional support to allow access 130 feet below grade. Interconnection requires rehabilitation of an existing tunnel, excavation of two new tunnels, and abandonment of additional existing tunnels. Construction has discovered unexpected conditions at all three connection points. The CMAR contracting method has effectively accommodated project team discussion, value engineering decisions, and allocation of risk during preconstruction and construction phase services.
