The geology and early history of the discovery of potash in Saskatchewan as described by Heber Cole (1) and R. V. Thompkins (2) has dealt with the distribution of the salt beds and their potash content. From the many bore holes through the Prairie Evaporites the outlines and contours of the series have been well established. The thickest section of the salt beds lies to the north of the "barren" area and forms a belt running easterly to a point west of Yorkton. The "barren" area is a region where the salt has been redissolved and the strata have slumped down, to fill the voids. This area is of interest from the standpoint of rock mechanics. The potash-rich beds extend both east and west of the region. mentioned and the top of the Prairie Evaporite is at a depth below 3200 feet from the surface near Saskatoon and dips southerly at an average rate of about five feet to ten feet per mile.

1. INTRODUCTION Roadheaders have a shadowy origin - probably in Eastern Europe - but were introduced to Europe and the West by the importation of a Russian PK3 machine by the National Coal Board in 1961. A number of features rendered this type of machine an attractive tool for coal mine operators: its flexibility of operation, its combined cutting and loading ability, the opportunity it provided of making any shape of roadway, as well as its ability to cut some rocks. Encouraged and sponsored by the National Coal Board, the development of roadheaders was taken up in Great Britain, notably by Anderson Strathclyde and Dosco; in Europe, predominantly in numerical terms by Voest Alpine and Paurat. Over the 24 years since the importation of the first PK3, evolutionary development has taken place to the extent that machines are now available in many forms up to 120 tons in weight. Machine design has altered, partly as a result of increased power requirements and partly in line with the use of a ripping or a co-axial head. However, the basic concept remains: a boom containing a motor and transmission gear, with a driven cutting head at its extremity and capable of universal movement urged by hydraulic rams mounted on the boom turret and on the machine deck. Generally, the turret, hydraulic powerpack and all other necessary equipment are mounted on a chassis, which contains a discharge conveyor, the whole being carried on caterpillar tracks so that a complete machine entity is provided. With the Working Shafts and Starter Tunnel under way, it became apparent this 4.7-mile, 19-foot diameter wet weather tunnel was going to live up to its name. The shaft’s pre-excavation grouting was completed, and ground water inflows were slowing project progress. As the tunnel drive was approaching 50% complete a cooperative effort was underway between the owner, engineer, and contractor to raise the base of the Retrieval Shaft by 65 feet to avoid ground water infiltration construction challenges. The tunnel alignment needed to be raised in kind. The project was behind schedule and rethinking the cast-in-place adit work was next on the agenda due to the very wet environment in the tunnel. The race was on to finish the project within the owner’s time constraints while completing multiple redesign aspects of the tunnel alignment and associated adit construction. This paper will evaluate original design criteria and actual in-route design modifications and change management to meet the owner’s just-in-time schedule needs.

Many of you are familiar with the Washington Metro Project. However, inasmuch as some may not be, and others may want to refresh their memories regarding certain facets of the project, I will cite a few summary details about the rail transit system we are constructing. That summary will also give each of us a common point for departure as I develop the principal thoughts that I want to leave with you. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is an interstate agency established by Compact between the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and approved by the United States Congress. Currently, the Authority has approval to build and operate a 101-mile (162.5 km) regional rapid rail transit system as shown on Appendix A. Of that total, 38 miles (61.2 km) will be in D. C., 32 miles (51.5 km) in Maryland and 30 miles (48.3 km) in Virginia. (Mileage figures, because of rounding error, do not add to 101 miles.) Referring again to the 101-mile total, 48 miles (77.2 km) will be underground, 42 miles (67.6 km) on the surface and 10 miles (16.1 km) on aerial structures. Of the 48 miles (77.2 km) that are underground, 15 miles (24.1 km) are rock tunnel, 14 miles (22.5 km) are earth tunnel, 0.5 miles (0.8 km) 9.s sunken tube and 19 miles (30.6 inn) are cut-and-cover construction. The system will include 86 stations, with 51 of them underground. Referring again to the full 86 stations, 43 will be in D. C., 23 in Maryland and 20 in Virginia. We currently have 37 miles (59.5 km) of line and 41 stations in operations as shown on Appendix B. On July 13, 1967 the San Bernardino County Planning Commission approved publicly a request by American Smelting and Refining Company for a zone variance to conduct a silver mining and milling operation in the Calico district, southern California, Coincidentally, on July 14 the U.S. Treasury halted its sales of silver, and the U.S. free market price quoted rose immediately from $1.30 to $1.77 per ounce. In its request to the commission Asarco stated that about 13,500 to 15,000 tons of rock would be moved daily by surface mining, including 7,000 tons of ore. The ore would be crushed to minus three-quarters inches and the silver recovered "by a chemical process." The grade of the ore was not given, but the company said that it might also recover barite as a byproduct, The operation would employ 150-160 people. Additional activity in the district includes exploration programs by Superior Oil Company and Calico Silver Mines, Ltd. History and production: In retrospect, as the price of silver began to rise in 1961 from 91 cents an ounce, and as Asarco began its exploration program in late 1964, a new era for an old bonanza silver district would seem to have begun. The Calico district has been mined for silver only on a very, very small scale since 1882 to 1896, when an estimated $12 to $20 million (perhaps 15 to 20 million troy ounces) of that metal was produced from the 50-odd mines of the district and vicinity. These mines include the Silver King, Oriental, Waterloo, Garfield, Odessa and Waterman (which is about 8 miles west of the district). Much smaller-valued amounts of barite, gold, lead, and copper also have been produced from the ore deposits of the district; and from 1884 to 1907 the region yielded about $9 million worth of borate minerals.

The Macmillan Pass tungsten property (MacTung) is the largest known copper-tungsten, calcic, exoskarn deposit in the Western Hemisphere. Located on the border between the Yukon and Northwest Territories in northwestern Canada, the deposit crops out on Mt. Allen within the Selwyn Mountain Range. It was discovered in 1962 by a subsidiary of AMAX Inc. and has since been explored by 16,300 meters of surface and underground diamond drilling and by 800 meters of underground development. Geologic reserves are in excess of 30 million tons, grading slightly less than 1.0% WO3. Scheelite (CaWO3 ) is the main mineral of economic interest. Accessible by road, the property is not in production. Previously estimated reserves at MacTung have been unable to fully utilize all the geological controls on mineralization. In the past three years, however, an intensive program has been underway to improve our understanding of the deposit and to use the resulting information in a more precise way. This paper will discuss the key aspects of the geology as they specifically relate to reserve estimation and will demonstrate how these controls are being used in a geostatistical model of the deposit.

The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology (Le. stratification, turnover, and development of anoxic conditions with depth) of the lake. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline, or temperature stratification, in the upper 10m to 30 m of the water column. Two of the pit lakes (26 m and 55 m deep) undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper pit lakes (110 m and 240 m) undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

The combined study of ground water regime and rock deformations has resulted in the theoretical substantiation of the common principles for analysis of the hydrodynamic and geomechanical processes Within the scope of unique scientific direction -hydrogeomechanics (Mironenko and Shestakov, 1974). The hydrogeomechanical models are widely used now for the analysis and forecasting the extremely important processes connected with the safe and efficient mining operations, as well as with the protection of geological medium. Among these processes are: -deformations of the open-pit slopes and spoil dumps; -consolidation of rocks due to the ground-water pressure drop; -water-end-rock material inrush into mine workings caused by deformations of the undermined rock mass; -geodynamical processes due to the changes in ground water regime; -artificial hydrofracturing in rocks; -transformations of clay linings under the tailing ponds and other technical water basins.

Stripping of gold and silver from carbon is effected by means of two main processes (AARL and ZADRA ). The main rate-enhancing parameter in the stripping of gold and silver is temperature. A secondary rate-enhancing parameter is ionic strength. (1) Stripping is usually conducted within a solution containing sodium cyanide (0.1 -0.5% ) and caustic ( 1 -3%). The development of a chemistry that increases the rate of gold and silver stripping from carbon in a manner proportional to its concentration is described. Its use in atmospheric and pressure strips is also outlined.

This article discusses four principal areas relevant to financing direct reduction facilities: (1) Lenders' differing requirements with respect to projected cash flows; (2) The impact of leveraging on project viability; (3) The importance of appropriate debt structure; (4) The significance of accurate and complete capital cost estimates. The overall findings emphasize the inseparable connection between the project economics and its financeability, and particularly how direcly intertwined they both are in the project planning.

The Cook Islands (CI) possesses within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) a massive field of polymetallic nodules representing one of the world’s largest undeveloped cobalt deposits, along with large quantities of other metals critical to achieving global energy transition targets. In February of 2022 the Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) of the CI granted Moana Minerals a license to conduct our nodule exploration program. This paper describes how Moana Minerals chose to approach conducting exploration activities, one of the greatest challenges to Deep Sea Mining (DSM) development and the securing of the social license to advance to eventual mining of the resources, in an unconventional manner. The remote location of the project poses logistical challenges in mobilizing to and operating in the region and is a significant cost driver. Historically, exploration campaigns mobilized large vessels from mainland Europe, the Americas, and Asia as this model works well when contemplating long duration and widely temporally spaced campaigns without the need to revisit. Moana Minerals, when considering these challenges determined a multi-year deep sea mining (DSM) exploration program conducted in such a remote location can be better optimized by the deployment of a smaller yet highly capable “exploration optimized” vessel that is dedicated to the task and is based full time in the Cook Islands. INTRODUCTION The paper describes the challenges of exploration in remote regions including the South Pacific, and how an unconventional consideration of the problem led to the solution. Completion of an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment begins with a detailed environmental scoping study, resource update sampling requirements, and engineering data and sample requirements, which identifies the exploration goals of the project and technology needed to accomplish those goals. The method walks the reader through vessel and technology selection, discusses the challenges of equipment selection considering size and capability, describes the final arrangement, and provides results from the initial exploration campaigns. We followed the project from conception through the shipyard conversion, mobilization, and initial operations in the Cook Islands. The result shows how a smaller vessel with limited budget makes a large impact on the exploration capabilities in the region while building public trust. The Anuanua Moana is the first dedicated deep sea minerals exploration vessel modified with a suite of technologies that allow it to compete technically with existing ships but operate locally in the smaller ports of the South Pacific. The unique combination of size and technical capability gives the Anuanua Moana advantages over other vessels. This paper shows the importance of the Anuanua Moana in the development of offshore exploration strategies in the emerging deep sea minerals space.

The evolution of pit lake water quality depends on the lithology and hydrologic characteristics of the ultimate pit surface, the availability of buffering capacity in the wall rock vs. oxidizable sulfide content, the alkalinity of recharging groundwater and the evapo-concentrative characteristics of the system. This paper assesses the geochemistry of 11 existing pit lakes, ranging from the acid Red Hill and Berkeley pit lakes (pH 2.6 to 2.8) to the alkaline Yerington pit lake (pH 8.45). Predicted pit lake chemistry is similar to that in existing pits, with long-term chemistry lying on a geochemical continuum between end members that consist of influent calcium bicarbonate groundwater and naturally occurring sulfate-rich evaporite playa lakes.

Production of highly-cleaned coal for advanced utilization schemes requires close control of the coal ash content at very low levels. For this purpose, a sensitive, low-cost, robust on-stream ash analyzer is needed. The development of such an instrument based on x-ray backscatter and fluorescence is described, including features to improve its sensitivity at low ash levels. The performance of the resulting device in testing a real coal sample is discussed.

Measuring diesel particulate matter (DPM) for underground metal/nonmetal mine compliance samples is done by collecting DPM onto quartz fiber filters and analyzing the samples via NIOSH method 5040 for elemental carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC). As part of the sampling train, two quartz fiber filters in tandem are housed inside an SKC DPM cassette that includes an impactor. The impactor segregates DPM and mine dust, and the second filter is used to correct for adsorption of vapor phase organic carbon (OC). Since the value of the second filter is subtracted from the first, the pre-existing carbon on the filter media for both filters needs to be comparable. In addition, the pre-existing carbon on the media should be low for accurate and sensitive results. However, there have been some reports of elevated OC on the filter media of the SKC DPM cassettes, which would cause the limit of detection (LOD) to be higher than reported at times. In this study, blank SKC DPM cassettes from different batches and with different expiration dates were analyzed to quantify the amount of carbon on the filter media and to determine the LOD and limit of quantification (LOQ) associated with these samplers. It was found that the organic carbon and total carbon on the media was about five times higher than quartz media used in samplers from other studies. The average TC on the blanks was 2.57 μg/cm2 with a standard deviation of 0.70, resulting in a LOD of 21 μg/m3 TC, 8-hr Time Weighted Average (TWA), and LOQ of 69 μg/m3 TC, 8-hr TWA, when using these samplers for collecting DPM. The LOD and LOQ may be improved through some sample preparation techniques. INTRODUCTION Exposure to diesel exhaust (DE) is associated with an increased risk for lung cancer and other adverse health effects (Attfield et al. 2012, Silverman et al. 2012, Ping and Guang 2017, IARC 2012). Pronk et al. 2009 reported that the highest exposed groups to elemental carbon (EC) from DE worked in underground sites in mining and construction and they were exposed to concentrations between 27–658 μg/m3. At concentrations (1–25 μg/m3 EC) well below those observed in mining, diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposures were estimated to increase the risk of cancer by levels exceeding those typically acceptable for occupational risk in the United States and Europe (Vermeulen et al. 2014). This suggests that underground miners are especially at risk because of their more substantial exposures in confined working spaces. As a protective measure, in 2001, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule to limit exposures of metal/nonmetal underground miners to DPM to an 8-hr time-weighted average (TWA) of 160 μg/m3 total carbon (TC) (MSHA 2001, 2006).

Roof falls are one of the greatest hazards in underground coal mines worldwide. Due to stringent safety measures and extensive support system development, roof falls have been reduced significantly but they still persist in many underground coal mines. Some of the roof falls initiate with cutter roof or guttering. In the past, many factors have been identified as being responsible for the development of cutters and roof fall. These responsible factors can be broadly classified as stress related or non-stress related. In this paper the finer details of mining technique have been taken into consideration for better understanding of cutter roof and roof fall problems. Three dimensional finite difference modeling has been used to explain the mechanism of cutter development. Strain softening material behavior has been used to realistically simulate the cutter formation, and common cutting sequences as implemented in the field have been simulated. This was done with an objective to determine whether the cutting sequence has really any significant control over cutter formation or not. In addition to cutting sequences, the effect of cut length is also studied. The effect of step cutting and turning of crosscut into and away from major and minor horizontal stresses is also examined to see its influence on cutter development.

In early June, Rio Tinto?s chief executive officer Tom Albanese said that he expected demand for iron ore, aluminum and copper to double in the next 15 years. Driven by global industrialization and urbanization, Albanese said during his company?s annual general meeting that to meet the demand in 2030, the additional supply required will be equivalent to replicating the iron ore output of Australia?s Pilbara region every five years, adding another aluminum production complex the size of Canada?s Saguenay every nine months and developing another copper mine the size of Escondida, in Chile, each year.

The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.

Florida Power and Light is the fifth largest investor-owned electric utility in the country. It has a service territory that covers 35 counties, or 28,000 square miles, 2.5 million customers, and serves 5.6 million people. The total installed capacity is 13,470 MW, generated by four nuclear units, 36 oil and/or gas fired units, and 48 gas turbine units. Traditionally, FPL has been an oil-based utility. In 1979, this dependency on oil became obvious when 42 million barrels of oil were burned during the year. At that time, it was also projected that, based on the current estimates of customer growth and available generation capacity through 1990, FPL's residual fuel oil consumption would increase from the 1979 level of 42 million barrels (6.7 million m3) per year to approximately 55 million barrels (8.7 million m3) per year by the mid-1990's. Concern over this was further aggravated by the fact that it was difficult to estimate both the price and quantity of fuel oil that would be available over the next decade since changes in the world market, decisions by oil producers and refiners, and international political developments would all affect the availability of oil. Also, at that time, the price of residual fuel oil had increased drastically, and there was no reason to think that these prices would soon stabilize. Thus, oil back-out became a primary objective of FPL and since then, FPL has been actively investigating ways to decrease fuel oil consumption.

Pluor Utah has been closely associated with the engineering and construction of earth bottom thickeners for porphyry copper operations, for the counter-current decantation circuit of a gold cyanide plant and similar applications in mineral processing. During the past 13 years, some 18 of these thickeners have entered service and the bottoms have proved to be watertight structures with no particular problems encountered. In the course of this work, technological advances have been realized in the procedures for engineering and construction of these units to assure watertight basins and achieve all possible economies in construction. This paper describes the successful application of engineering and construction techniques for a number of these thickeners.
