"In this period of improved metal prices and reported profits, valuable lessons should be recalled from the 1970s when a similar cycle lured the federal and provincial governments into thinking that they could grab bigger pieces of the pie without harming the minerals industry. It took years for the industry to recover from the damage inflicted by that unprecedented scramble for higher tax revenues. British Columbia producers would face a basic royalty and a royalty on so-called ""super profits"", resulting in some instances in tax rates exceeding 100070 of pre-tax profits.The ball started to roll. Mining tax changes knew no political or geo graphical boundary. On April 9, 1974, Ontario's Treasurer John White stated in his budget speech:""Increased demand by major industrialized countries has resulted in sharply higher metals prices and substantial wind fall gains for the mining industry in Ontario. With the prospective demand for minerals likely to sustain current price trends into the future, it is only fair that we secure for the people a higher return from our natural resources""."

"Grinding mills are infamous for their extremely low energy efficiency. This paper reports the results of an investigation that characterized energy outputs in industrial grinding mill circuits. It identifies and discusses the potential for recovering energy from grinding circuits. Agnico-Eagle Goldex Division, Mine Canadian Malartic, and New Gold New Afton Mine participated in the study by providing operating data for three semi-autogenous grinding mills and four ball mills. Results showed that on average, 79% of the supplied electrical energy was converted to heat absorbed by the slurry, 8% was lost through the drive system, and approximately 2% was transmitted to the ambient air. Only 9% of the input energy was actually used for grinding. The remaining 91%—wasted as heat—could potentially be recovered using suitable technologies or integrated energy management systems. "Greater reliability of mineral deposit and reserve estimates can be attained through better quality control of the data and information acquisition, and the estimation processes. This paper reviews the following key requirements:1. greater awareness of the significant figures of both data and estimates, and better understanding of the probabilistic aspects of the estimates, their confidence limits and margins of error;2. greater reliability of the information that supports the estimates, by more explicit and more rigorous methods and standards for data acquisition and for interpretations;3. more quantitative estimations of geological/mineral continuity, based on improved three dimensional sampling patterns and the use of geostatistics; and 4. better integration at the project engineering and mine production stages, of the mineral deposit characteristics and mining method constraints, for more efficient mineral recovery and mine quality control.RÉSUMÉUne plus grande fiabilité des estimations des gisements et des réserves minières requiert plus d&apos;emphase sur le contrôle de la qualité de I ‘acquisition de l&apos;information et du processus d&apos;estimation. "Dominion No. 17 Colliery, of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, is located in the district of New Victoria, N.S., at the entrance to Sydney harbour.This Colliery was opened in 1882 to work a submarine area of the Harbour seam (see Figure 1). It was closed in 1921 and the mine, which has a make of water of approximately 250 gallons per minute, was allowed to fill.No. 18 Colliery, situated almost a mile to the east, was opened in 1938 to work the Phalen seam in this area with the intention, later, of driving a cross-measure tunnel to mine the section of the Harbour seam lying between No. 17 Colliery and the Princess Colliery of the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company, Limited.In 1945 it became necessary to open this area in the Harbour seam and a cross-measure tunnel was driven from the existing workings of No. 18 Colliery in the Phalen seam, which underlies the Harbour seam at a depth of 500 feet.The tunnel was started in 1946 and completed in 1948. The cost of opening this section, which contained only 6 1/2 million tons of coal, made imperative the recovery of all the available coal and precluded the maintenance of the large barriers that had been left in No. 17 Colliery for impounding the water, especially as the maintenance of these barriers would have meant the loss of 885,000 tons of coal, or 12.3 per cent of the whole tonnage available. Therefore, a study was made to determine the best means to dewater the 250 million gallons of water lying in the old No. 17 Colliery."

I THINK it can be safely said that no mining operation, whetl1er open-pit or underground, is ever entirely free of water. It follows that every ton of ore bears a charge which represents, either directly or indirectly, the cost of keeping the mine workings as dry as possible. Water problems occur in all phases of mining operations. They cause difficult and costly drilling conditions during the exploration stage, they often seriously delay mine development, they can slow mine production and reduce efficiency, and they are a continued burden over the life of the mine. It is therefore in the interest of all mining men to be familiar with the methods and materials used for grouting. The most common grouting material is cement. Cement grouting is old and well established, and many engineers are familiar with its uses and limitations. "The fault under consideration follows a northerly trend past the west; side of the original settlement of Yell ow knife; which is situated 600 miles; north of Edmonton and 400 miles from the Northern Alberta Railway; terminus at Waterways; Alberta. The mining properties chiefly concerned; include the southern part of the Giant claims; on the east side of the fault; and the Con-Rycon-Demelt claims; on the west side 3 1/2 miles to the south.; Geological data were also obtained from the eastern part of the A.Y.E.; property; which lies south of the Giant claims; and from the Negus; Meg; Yellorex; and Kam properties; which are south and southeast of the ConRycon-; Demelt claims (see Frontispiece; also Fig. 5).Recognition of the major faults in the Yellowknife Bay area, including the West Bay fault, which appears to be the greatest, resulted from the work of A. W. Jolliffe (formerly of the Geological Survey of Canada) in 1935 and subsequent years. It has been stated with little exaggeration that these faults rank with the largest known steeply dipping dislocations of the earth's crust.In the winter of 1939, a mineralized shear zone named the 'Creek vein' was found on the Giant property. It was noted that the space relationship between this shear zone and a body of quartz-feldspar porphyry is roughly the same as that between the Con C-4 shear zone and a body of acid flows lying north of the Con property. Coupling this relationship with the assumption that the movement along the fault is dominantly horizontal, it was postulated that the Giant shear zone represented the faulted extension of the Con C-4 shear zone.As geological information became more extensive, certain weaknesses in this concept became apparent, and when spectacular orebodies were discovered on the Giant property in 1944 the question of possible faulted extensions became an important consideration. Consequently, in the spring of 1944, an extended investigation was undertaken, the results of which are embodied in this paper."

"Abstract-A variety of techniques for interpreting systems of mineralized echelon veins is discussed using examples from Panasqueira and SW England. As aids for exploration and mine planning, and as a tool for ore reserve evaluation, particular emphasis is placed upon establishing vein morphology in the third dimension, and upon understanding vein dilation and propagation histories. Special attention is also placed upon investigating vein thickness and spacing relationships, and upon understanding vein segmentation. The relevant data for these techniques are all readily obtainable from stope and core sources.The vein systems described were produced in host-rock sequences that underwent incremental dilation in response to fluid overpressures, and individual veins display evidence for mineral infilling synchronous with their propagation. Echelon vein geometries resemble those reported from igneous dikes and sills: vein walls are stepped and veins are divided into segments arranged in echelons. Changes in vein geometry, from arrays to composite structures, reflect both the evolution of the vein system with time, and the changes occurring between the margins (arrays) and core (composite structures) of the system. These characteristic morphologies can be used to infer vein propagation and fluid injection trends, proximity of neighboring veins, and the shape of the system as a whole. The techniques are applicable to systems of echelon veins produced under tensile conditions in rocks where faults were absent at the time of vein formation, and where subsequent deformation has been minimal. Further work is required to assess the application to echelon vein systems formed within more complex tectonic regimes."

The Pembina Cardium pool is a low permeability, stratified, solution-gas drive reservoir. Water-flooding has proven to be an effective means of pressure maintenance for all areas of the pool in which an economic rate of water injection can be maintained. The majority of water injection wells in the pool are converted oil well~ with capacities greater than 100 millidarcy-feet. If the average injection rate per unit of capacity can be in-creased the lower capacity areas of the pool can be economically flooded. Theory, laboratory work, and two . early miscible-flooding projects with-in the pool suggested that average water injection rates for converted wells could be increased two to three-fold by the initial injection of natural gas liquids and natural gas. Westwood Mine has experienced several episodes of increased seismic activity. While current geotechnical characterizations such as RMR, GSI, and Q' index can identify the general rock quality and zones at risk of convergence, they fail in identifying zones at risk of seismic activity. Previous research at Westwood Mine has shown a correlation between seismicity and areas with strong rheology contrasts. To characterize this contrast, 300 UCS tests were analyzed with their associated geochemical data, and statistical analysis and regression were performed using IOGAS software to establish a relationship between resistance and geochemistry. UCS-generated data with XRF results were transferred to Leapfrog Geo to create a block model of intact rock strength. This block model dataset was used to perform a competency contrast block model, and back-analysis of specific seismic sectors at Westwood Mine were conducted to validate the model. The purpose is to develop an established geomechanical tool capable in identifying areas with greater seismic risk associated to a change in the rock strength characteristics. By identifying those areas, mitigation measures can be implemented to minimize impact of seismicity on the operation.

"Following several months of test work, water leaching in mined-out areas at Stanrock commenced on a production basis in February, 1963. A combination of fast high-pres-sure washing and rewashing of stopes on a predetermined cycle, and the intermittent sprinkling of low-grade heaps, using both fresh water and recirculated acid water, has proved most successful. There was also a correlation of daily sampling data points to a relationship between the leach water grade and the grade of the material being washed, the leaching time and the location along the dip. An increasing tolerance for uranium by the acid-producing bacteria is also indicated. A steady production rate of 10,000 to 12,000 lbs. of u.08 per month is being maintained, with an over-all mine water grade of 0.25 lb. per ton and a pH of 2.3."

"Excavation of deep underground openings in highly stressed grounds can generate new fractures near the openings. As a result, rock mass bulking may occur, leading to large wall deformation. A better understanding of brittle rock failure and the associated fracturing process at the laboratory scale is an essential step towards evaluating dilation behavior of rocks. A grain-based model that can capture dilation behavior of rocks under various loading conditions at the laboratory scale can be a useful approach to study rock mass bulking at the field scale. The aim of the paper is to study the dilation behavior of rocks at the laboratory scale employing numerical simulation. A modified grain-based model is used to simulate the macroscopic response of crystalline rocks by considering micro-fractures at the grain scale. Grains generated with the Voronoi tessellation are allowed to fail in tension or in shear using a strain-softening model. Damage is represented by either grain boundary fracture or grain failure, or the combination of the two. As stress increases, the process of damage, fracture initiation and coalescence in rocks can be captured.The grain-based model was calibrated using test data of the Lac du Bonnet granite and a parametric study was conducted. Numerical simulation results showed that the proposed modeling approach is able to capture most of the mechanical properties, fracture pattern, and dilation behavior in both unconfined and confined loading conditions. In an unconfined compression test, interactions of microscopic fractures may lead to macroscopic shear or axial splitting failure depending on the chosen micromechanical parameters. Numerical experimental results show that the dilation behavior of the model is strongly related to the failure mechanism of rocks. Tensile-failure-dominated failure mode generates large dilation due to the formation of new cracks that are sub-parallel to the loading direction. On the other hand, shear-failure-dominated failure mode produces small volume increase. One significant finding from this study is that in order to capture large dilation using grain-based UDEC models, intragranular grain failure should be considered."

"This paper describes the conversion of the grinding section of the W a bush Mines pelletizing plant from conventional wet, open-circuit trunnion overflow ball milling, with filtering, and bentonite mixing on a common conveyor belt, to dry, open-circuit, grate discharge grinding, with pug mill mixing of bentonite and water at individual mills.The test work and data on operating economies to justify the cost of conversion are given. It is too early, at the time of writing, to have complete operating confirmation, but data are available. A brief description of the original plant is included."

"The naturally occurring carbonaceous material (CM) in gold bearing ores often exhibits strong-preg-robbing properties. It can adversely affect the process of gold recovery during the cyanidation due to its ability to adsorb, or preg-rob gold from the cyanide leach solution.Treatments of carbonaceous ores with chemical surfactants as blinding agents to limit preg-robbing have shown promising results but at the same time have demonstrated that, if not properly used, could have a strong detrimental effect on the gold recovery process. High dosages of surfactants used as passivating agents for carbonaceous matter could lead to unwanted partial passivation of the activated carbon added during the CIL process and severely impact the gold recovery. Optimal dosage for various surfactants would strongly depend on the ore mineralogy and the parameters of the pulp (temperature, pH, surface area and maturity of the carbonaceous material, etc).This paper describes an experimental study on the effectiveness of various commercially available blinding agents used to minimize the preg-robbing capacity of naturally occurring carbonaceous matter. The scope of the study was to: i) establish the optimum addition of blanking agent (surfactant) to minimize the preg-robbing capacity of the CM in the ore, and ii) establish maximum threshold amounts of blanking agents to be used before it negatively impacts the preg-robbing capacity of the activated carbon used in the CIL process. The study procedure involves standardized doping tests to evaluate the maximum preg-robbing capacity of treated CM, coupled with surface analysis with ToF-SIMS to monitor the presence and the degree of loading of these chemical surfactants on both the naturally occurring CM and the added activated carbon.INTRODUCTIONNaturally occurring carbonaceous material (CM) in gold bearing ores often exhibits strong-preg-robbing properties. "In the last few years CANMET has taken the initiative by investigating the possibility of reactivating abandoned old tailings dumps (for gold production) which would be of potential economic interest across Canada.Nova Scotia was one location where numerous gold processing plants were in operation in the early days. A survey of the old tailing dumps was conducted and some areas of interest were selected. Among them were the sites identified as Lake Charlotte and Forest Hill.Ore samples collected from those tailing ponds were examined for their chemico-mineralogical composition and investigated for gold extraction. Three technological concepts were tested: flotation, direct cyanidation and flotation followed by cyanidation of the flotation concentrate. The combined flotation- cyanidation variant, yielding a gold recovery in the range of 90%, was recommended for processing the tailing ore.Pilot-plant runs carried out by a commercial testing firm (data not included in this paper) confirmed the conditions and results of CANMET&apos;s technology.As a result a consulting-engineering firm designed the processing plant which is expected to begin operation in the near future.IntroductionIn the last few years CANMET initiated a research program to locate in Canada, abandoned gold-silver tailing dumps of potential economic interest and to explore the possibility of recovering the precious metals from these old deposits by modern techniques.A literature search revealed that the first production of gold in Canada was recorded in British Columbia in 1858 and that, production prior to 1900 was essentially restricted to the Yukon, British Columbia Nova Scotia and Quebec. During the early 1900s, Ontario, Manitoba and the North West Territories joined the ranks of the gold producers.Early milling and recovery methods were mainly restricted to sluice boxes, gravity stamps and amalgamation. Froth flotation and cyanidation were introduced at about the turn of the century.Recovery of gold at plants using flotation and cyanidation was very good, therefore the tailing ponds resulting from those operations would, very likely be of little or no economic importance. However, the gold recovery at the amalgamation and gravity concentration plants appeared to be lower, indicating the possibility that significant amounts of recoverable gold would have been carried with the tailings to the dump sites."

"IntroductionTHE LEAD SMELTING Department of The Consolidated Mining •and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited (Cominco), at Trail, B.C. treats materials from numerous sources for the recovery of lead, •and, of secondary importance, for the .recovery of sulphur as S02• The Department's sintering section has a .capacity of 1,500 tons daily. This section is being replaced by •a new charge-•handling and sintering plant with a daily capacity of 2,000 tons of finished sinter. Materials handled in the sintering section comprise concentrates, ores, and fluxes from Company mines and from 'custom' (independent) producers, together with intermediate products from various plants of Cominco'•s Metallurgical Division, all of which must be treated to, make up a chemically balanced charge of a predetermined lead content for the sintering plant.As received, 80 •per .cent of these materials are finer than 200 mesh, and one-quarter of the tonnage (dry basis) is a slurry .at 30 to 40 per cent moisture. This slurry, a -residue from the electrolytic zinc operation, was, for many years, partially dried before being mixed with other dry materials to make up the sinterplant charge.Some experimental work carried out in 1937 indicated that the metallurgy of the sintering operation could be improved by adopting a technique of 'wet-mixing' followed by controlled drying and nodulizing."

"Numerical simulation of collapse of tunnels in weak rocks is one of the challenging problems in rock mechanics. Collapse can impose technical and financial difficulties during the construction of underground excavations. This phenomenon, particularly in shallow excavations, may lead to propagation of a caved zone toward the surface and formation of chimney subsidence. Chimney subsidence has numerous catastrophic consequences such as the adverse environmental impacts and damage to surface structures in vicinity of excavations. Due to the importance of subsidence in civil engineering, the main goal of this study is to propose an appropriate method for preventing the formation of subsidence in shallow tunnels in weak rocks. The Dolaei road tunnel is investigated as a case study, where a large chimney subsidence has occurred. The geology of the area and the geostructural characteristics of the rock mass surrounding the tunnel are briefly reviewed in this paper. Two-dimensional as well as threedimensional numerical simulations are conducted to study the tunnel stability. Moreover, the effects of staged excavation and pre-supporting method on controlling the ground movements are studied. Outcomes of this study indicate that employing forepoling and staged excavation can be a practical remedy to control the ground movements and prevent the formation of chimney subsidence.INTRODUCTIONPredicting the formation of subsidence, mainly sinkhole subsidence over civil or mining excavations, is a very challenging task. An accurate prediction of subsidence is required for selecting an appropriate control and mitigation system to reduce the level of ground movements and its impact on the surface life (Bétournay et al. 1994; Leca and New 2007). Excavations, particularly in weak grounds, could result in surface subsidence; they modify the in-situ stress conditions as well as the hydrogeology of the area. Construction of unsupported excavations in soft soils and relatively weak rocks usually leads to the formation of a failure zone behind the face. In a very soft ground, the failure zone can extend towards the ground ahead of the tunnel face. Propagation of this zone toward the ground surface results in generation of sinkholes."

"Tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy-electron backscattered diffraction (SEM-EBSD) analysis were performed in an Al-Mg-Si alloy to clarify the effect of annealing and cold-rolling reduction on the texture formation. The hot-rolled specimens were cold-rolled with the reduction of 58-75%(CR1), followed by annealing at 773 K for 5 min(IA). The secondary cold-rolling(CR2)for the IA specimens with the reduction of 33–66%, followed by the solution heat treatment(ST), were performed. Focusing on the CR1 and CR2 specimens, the average r-values increased with higher primary and lower secondary cold-rolling reduction, respectively. This was considered to be due to the increase of r-values measured in the direction of 45 degree with respect to rolling direction, caused by the formation of the ß-fiber components (Brass {011}<211>, Copper {112}<111> and S {123}<634>) with high density. Based on the texture analysis of annealed specimens it was suggested that the high density of the ß-fiber components after IA and the small amount of stored strain energy of CR2 introduced by the lower cold-rolling reduction remained the ?-fiber components even after solution treatment.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si alloys have been applied to automobile body applications, due to their excellent paint-bake hardening (age-hardening) and corrosion resistance compared to other aluminum alloy. On the other hand, the mechanical properties and deep drawability of Al-Mg-Si alloys are inferior to those of steels. Thus, it is important to improve the mechanical properties and deep drawability in order to expand the application components. One of the best methods to improve the deep drawability is to increase the Lankford coefficient (r-value). Previous studies reported that the increase of the average r-value ( ) improves the deep drawability. The relationship between the r-value and texture of the alloy is also well known. "The Frog&apos;s Leg project is located in the Kundana mining centre 22 kms West of Kalgoorlie, in Western Australia. The Mines and Resources Australia (MRA) Dioro Exploration Joint Venture has had considerable exploration success centred on the high grade Frog&apos;s Leg discovery. A gold resource of 930,000 ounces has been defined. At Frog&apos;s Leg there have been three discrete resource domains recognised - Supergene, Contact, and Quartz Lodes. This paper describes the metallurgical test work undertaken.The selection of the drill core was a joint effort by the MRA Senior Geologist and Mineral Engineering Technical Services (METS) to ensure the samples were representative of the ore body. Optimisation of gold recovery was essential as both the Contact and Quartz Lodes have exceptionally high percentages of free gold as well as significantly higher grades than the typical open pit ores found in Western Australia. The metallurgical scope of work included documenting all of the metallurgical test results, establishing the comminution characteristics, determining the percentage of gravity recoverable gold, evaluating the cyanide leach characteristics and determining the tailings characteristics. These studies were used as the basis of flow sheet design to treat both ores and to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of alternative flowsheets. Investigations also included toll milling options at various plants as well as second hand and transportable plants. Considerable technical effort has been put into ore characterisation by way of test work aimed at managing the process risk at each stage of project development, including mitigation. MRA also carried out detailed mineralogical analysis of the ores."
