The mine of the year 2020 will need to be based on a new way of mining. It will employ technology in a paradigm that assumes responsibility for sustainable development: taking account not only economic but also ecological and social issues. This will require a holistic approach to mine design and planning, considering all controlling factors and impacts (technical, economic, environmental and social). A national collaborative strategy is required to address the several options that exist for the development and application of 2020 mining technology. Key issues in implementing 2020 mining technology will also relate to human resources, in terms of employment, skills and education. A need exists to proactively prepare for 2020 through development of a comprehensive education and training strategy.

"This study is part of large and an ongoing investigation into the development of a light-weight and highly fluid mine fill for various applications in mining and civil operations. Foam mine fill is the new material proposed for backfilling mines, and is fabricated by mixing stable foam into a mixture of tailings, binders, and water. This paper investigates the effects of both binder dosage and the amount of foam used upon the mechanical and physical properties of foam fill, mainly in regards to compressive strength, porosity and density.Samples were prepared using tailings from a copper mine as the inert material, Normal Portland Cement as the main binding agent, and a foaming agent with a foam generator. Samples were cured for 7, 14 and 28 days and were then subjected to unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing. Select samples were subjected to mercury intrusion porosimetry, so as to study the microstructural properties. An empirical model was then developed, using a response surface methodology to establish a relationship between the investigated parameters. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDThe disposal of mine tailings is a significant issue in the mining industry, particularly as mine production increases. Many mines re-use mine tailings for backfilling, which is a method for reducing environmental exposure to tailings, maintaining underground stability, and increasing ore recovery (Benzaazoua, Belem & Bussière, 2002).This paper introduces a new type of backfill called ‘foam mine fill’. This proposed backfill material is similar to cellular concrete, as air bubbles are entrained in cement or lime mortar, resulting in a cellular structure (Narayanan & Ramamurthy, 2000). Air voids can occupy up to 70% of the volume of concrete, which makes it light- weight, and thus can be used for a wide range of civil applications, including backfilling (Tarasov et al. 2010; Panesar, 2013). Unlike cellular concrete, the incorporation of air bubbles into a mixture of tailings, binder and water makes foam fill a potential new backfilling material. Furthermore, a preliminary investigation on foam fill samples found that pulp densities should be optimized before adding the foam, in order to produce consistent samples without foam segregation or losses (Hefni et al., 2014)."

The Committee's proposed standards establish definitions and guidelines for the reporting of Exploration Information, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in Canada and are identified as the "CIM Standards" and referred to as such hereafter in this document. To provide additional clarification to Qualified Persons (QPs), guidelines have been included with the respective definitions. The CIM Standards are applicable to all minerals including industrial minerals, diamonds and other gemstones. Reserve definitions for bitumen, natural gas and oil are not included in these Standards. The CIM Standards are not intended to cover mineral inventory estimates that will be reported to government agencies.

It was felt, however, that to meet the conditions of the mines in Nova Scotia, any machine developed must have certain distinctive characteristics. It must: ( 1) Be able to cut and deliver coal in quantity and of the right sizes ( 2) Be easily manoeuvrable ( 3) Be suitable for longwall operations ( 4) Not interfere with timbers already set ( 5) Cut its own stable (6) Work on reasonably heavy gradients

"The Precambrian sedimentary series of the Labrador geosyncline, including iron formation, extends into southwestern Labrador and adjacent Quebec. The iron formation consisted of primary oxide, silicate, and carbonate facies which were deposited simultaneously in an irregular basin in response to migratory environmental conditions. The iron formation isochemically recrystallized to coarse-grained quartz-iron oxide, iron silicate, and quartz-iron carbon-ate rocks during prolonged regional metamorphism. The rocks are deformed on two deformation axes intersecting at large angles, and are characterized by isoclinal to recumbent folds. Parts of the formation have been profoundly affected by a post-metamorphic leaching and oxidizing environment."

"High temperature and humidity at the working negatively affect safety and health in deep and hot underground mines. It is necessary to predict during design the dynamic changes in temperature with heat and moisture emitted into the mine ventilation-thermal-humidity (VTH) system from various sources such as auto-compression, wall of strata, mining equipment and workers. Currently available mine ventilation and climate models are either furnished with a simplified, step-change-type (SCT) model for thermal solver (such as in Climsim, VnetPC, Minevent, MFire, etc), or with more advanced models to account for the “thermal history effect” (also known as thermal flywheel effect), such as in Ventsim and MULTIFLUX. The goal is to quantify the modelling error caused by the lack of variable thermal history component in the SCT model. Two models are compared: one with and one without the thermal history component in long, single airway examples with long-term climate simulations for 20 years assuming an input air temperature with daily variation. The examples illustrate the magnitude and the time-lag phase of the variation of the modelling errors with space, time and model conditions. Large errors are shown in the order of +14°C and –7°C errors, persistent for long time periods, up to 20 days in one example.INTRODUCTIONIt is important to predict the heat and humidity distributions during the design of hot and humid underground mines for the safety and health of the workers. The feasibility of extracting a rich deposit in great depth may depend on the extent of ventilation and mine climatization for maintaining an acceptable working environment. The cost of ventilation and cooling may be substantial, up to 40–50% of the total energy cost of mining (Clausen, 2017). The accuracy of model solution is important in view of the low profit margin in mine feasibility for deep and hot mines. Safety and health of the miners, the primary concerns, are therefore inherently connected to finding ever better solutions in simulation methods and ventilation control techniques."

The use of anhydrite (AH) seed, control of acidity levels and ageing were assessed as means to promote the conversion of freshly produced metastable gypsum generated in-situ to the less soluble anhydrite phase and force deposition of calcium sulphate on seed as opposed to on equipment as scale, while achieving lower terminal aqueous calcium concentration as well. It was found that moderate sulphuric acid levels (0.25M) and ageing in the presence of AH seed accelerated the gypsum-AH conversion, achieving 100% transformation of the metastable gypsum generated in situ to the more stable, less soluble AH in 6-7 days, while lower/nil acidity did not promote more than 30% AH conversion for 10 days, even in the presence of AH seed. These findings indicate that anhydrite seeding, ageing and incomplete neutralization are beneficial for scale control as well as achieving lower calcium levels, thus rendering the resulting solution more amenable for recycling.

During 1998 COGEMA Resources Inc. announced that operations at the Cluff Lake mine will be suspended indefinitely by the end of year 2000 as a result of deteriorating uranium market conditions. To remain profitable, Cluff Lake mine started an aggressive cost reduction program. A cost reduction team was formed to look for ways to lower production costs. The focus of this team was to screen all areas and to come up with ideas to improve the economy of the mine and ensure the viability of the operations over the remaining three years of operations. Among the areas where significant savings were achieved are: (1) replacement of portion of cement with fly ash in backfill; (2) backfill optimization; and (3) new shotcrete plant installation on site for bulk in-house shotcrete production. This paper details the research work carried out by Cluff Lake mine on these projects and results of its application.

The financial performance of the mining industry, measured by return on equity and capital employed, has been inadequate for many years. Consequently, mining companies are not valued highly by stock markets. Among the more important causes for the decline in the sector are the conservative working practices and reluctance to adapt to change or to develop new technology, although some relatively recent developments such as SX-EW copper and heap leach gold have made a significant impact on the cost base of these metals. The subsidiary business of metals exploration suffers from the same problems as the rest of the industry. The rate of discovery of ore deposits has been falling over many years and since the late 1990s, there has been a sharp reduction in global exploration activity that, if it continues, will further reduce the global supply of new ore reserves. New technological developments, particularly in geophysics and different operational practices may help reverse this trend. Statistical methods for evaluating the risk of ore reserve estimates will also improve the economic return on new mining ventures. The science of ore geology has potential to reduce exploration risk, but modern ore genetic theory has not contributed greatly to recent discoveries. The junior exploration market has almost ceased, but a new style of technically specialized efficient small exploration company has emerged which, in alliances with major companies, may be the vehicle for future global exploration. Exploration in virgin terrains has a higher risk discounted potential for the discovery of very large orebodies than that in known mining districts but mining companies have little financial incentive for this high risk exploration because of the very long lead time to production. Alliances of two or more companies reduce the risk in both the exploration for and development of major new mining projects. If new orebodies are not found, then metal prices will inevitably rise in the long term. Governments of industrial countries, particularly those with a significant mining industry such as Canada, should therefore provide assistance to exploration in order to maintain their existing industry and prevent a metals shortage from developing in the future with its consequent impact on the world economy and increased environmental damage as large lowgrade orebodies are developed to supply an expanding market.

Control of arsenic in the Potrerillos' Refinery electrolyte has been obtained by withdrawing a bleed stream of circulating electrolyte and ensuring the ratio of [O]/[As] in the cast anodes is maintained between 0.9 and 1.0. In order to achieve this control the anode oxygen must be adjusted, depending on the arsenic level in the cast anodes. It has been necessary to modify the time of the reduction step in the anode furnace refining process. Control of this ratio has permitted electro refining of anodes with high levels of arsenic, up to 3000 ppm, while minimizing the volume of electrolyte that must be removed for impurity control so as not to affect the copper concentration in the electrolyte. However this control strategy is not useful when the arsenic concentration in the cast anode is too high, because it is limited by the maximum oxygen concentration allowable for a good quality anodic. Costs have been reduced in anode furnace refining because it is no longer necessary to use alkaline flux injection to remove the arsenic in cast anodes.

THIS paper discusses testing and quality control of milled asbestos fibre. It has been composed with the intention of: (I) Summarizing past, present and probable future methods of testing and classifying the various grades of commercial asbestos produced by the Quebec asbestos industry. (2) Acquainting those unfamiliar with the methods used for evaluating, testing and controlling the grading and the quality of Quebec chrysotile asbestos fibres with some of the physical and chemical procedures currently used for that purpose. (3) Discussing some of the complications facing the producers, such as variations in the orebody and special requirements of asbestos manufacturers. ( 4) Detailing some of the present quality control methods. Approximately 70% of world copper reserves consist of the mineral chalcopyrite, and much international effort has focused on its study. Ultimate objectives include the development of environmentally friendly alternatives to smelting, and technologies to treat low-grade ores, for which concentration and smelting are economically unviable. Unfortunately, chalcopyrite leaching is inefficient in H2S04-Fe2(S04)3-FeS04 solutions, which is considered to be the most desirable oxidizing medium for leaching of copper sulfides, since the chemistry is well known, corrosion of industrial equipment is negligible, subsequent copper recovery by SXlEW is well established, and environmental impact is minimal. The main reason for this inefficiency is the self-passivation of chalcopyrite. We have devoted considerable effort in the understanding of this phenomenon, and have developed a predictive electrochemical methodology capable of establishing a priori the precise range of potentials within which chalcopyrite leaches and where it is passivated. Since potential control is a critical parameter in chalcopyrite leaching, this experimental methodology can be very useful for establishing the best conditions to leach chalcopyrite. In this paper, the scientific foundations of this predictive experimental technique are presented, and its practical application is demonstrated by comparing its predictions with leaching experiments from the literature.

"The effect of extended ball milling has been studied for two industrial processes: (1) the processing of metal sulphide concentrates; and (2) the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite to synthetic rutile. The plant concentrates were a gold ore with 128 g/t Au of which 8% was non-refractory and a zinc concentrate with copper impurities.The gold concentrate showed complete dissolution of the gold bearing minerals after milling giving almost complete gold liberation. The zinc concentrate showed almost all of the sulphides had solubilized leaving the gangue and elemental sulphur. A study of pure pyrite and arsenopyrite shows that selective dissolution should be possible by a simple leaching process directly after milling.The milling of ilmenite and coal together results in a temperature decrease of 150°C in the subsequent carbothermic reduction of ilmenite, in addition to improving both the rate of reaction and the selectivity of reduction to rutile. IntroductionAlmost all mineral processing plants use mills for the size reduction of particles prior to physical and chemical processing. When continuing beyond size reduction the energy transferred causes deformation, breakage and realloying of particles giving a steady-state particle size. The breaking also causes increasing damage to the crystal structure by formation of smaller grains giving an increasing number of grain boundaries and increasing crystalline defects due to deformation. The increasing number of grain boundaries and defects leads to increased reactivity, which can be seen directly by a reaction within the mill, or indirectly, via a decrease in the subsequent annealing temperature required for reaction."

A new style of tectonic map based on age of folding has been prepared for the Canadian Appalachian region as part of the Tectonic Map of Canada Project. This style of map pro-vides a clearer picture of the tectonic history of the region than any meth-od hitherto attempted. Precambrian blocks that were relatively unaffected by Palaeozoic de-formation are distinguished on the Great Northern Peninsula and in the Conception Bay region of Newfound-land. K/ A age determinations suggest that these blocks were intruded and metamorphosed during Grenville orogeny. Other Grenville-like rocks, on Cape Breton Island and in New Brunswick, were more actively involved in subsequent Palaeozoic orogeny. "Recent R&D pilot plant testing was done to validate a full industrial scale system for recovering residual magnetite from the tails of an iron ore concentration plant. The recovery system is based on an autogenous heavy media separator treating a tailings slurry at 0.45% solids by weight. A 3,100 m3/h capacity concentrator was installed based on the testing findings. Excellent metallurgical results have been observed in two years of continuous operation. This experience is the basis for the proposal of a novel process consisting of the preconcentration of base metals ores; the idea being to obtain a heavy bulk concentrate of the polymetallic minerals and discarding in one step the light gangue mineral components. The bulk concentrate then proceeds to conventional froth flotation. The reduced volumetric flow of the bulk concentrate allows a reduction in the size of the subsequent flotation circuit. A prerequisite for the heavy media separation is a fine size grinding of the ore and a correspondingly high degree of liberation of the mineral species to be recovered. A process scheme is also presented in which the gravity concentrator works in conjunction with a companion tailings thickener for process water recovery. The underflow from this thickener, having paste consistency, can be sent to a tailings dam or mixed with Portland cement for mine backfill. The process water in the system is managed at an estimated recovery in excess of 98%. Additional R&D work using this novel approach is being considered by a large iron ore concentrator for removal of liberated silica from the final concentrate; and for upgrading 3.5 million tons of a marginal hematite reserve owned by the mining company.INTRODUCTIONGravity preconcentration (static and dynamic) of sulphides prior to froth flotation has been and is being practiced at various concentrator plants (Asarco´s Young Mill: heavy media cone; Mount Isa: DSM cyclone; Afton Mines: Denver jigs; Tsumeb Mine: Reichert cone) (Burt, 1984). The idea behind installing preconcentration equipment is to reduce the volume of feed processed on flotation, thus requiring smaller flotation plants although other advantages may be of importance, such as obtaining richer concentrates due to higher grade feed, better process water and energy management, and reduced flotation reagent consumption.The SedconTM solid/liquid separator is a versatile process unit patented in Mexico (MX/u/2007/000305). As a gravity device, it may be classified as an autogenous heavy media dynamic concentrator. Figure 1 depicts the Sedcon (Sedimentador de conos) separator. The four main components are as follows: the feedwell for efficient mixing of the pulp with dilution water and flocculant (and coagulant for water clarification); the inner cones (passive elements for solid/liquid separation); the discharge underflow cone; and the scraper mechanism. The standard discharge cone is a 60° inclined cone for general applications. For paste tailings thickening applications, a deep cone with a 69° inclined cone is used."

"The benefits of modern technology can readily be identified with energy availability. A clear correlation has been established between per-capita energy consumption and the GNP for various nations. The United States is an outstanding example of a nation which has benefited from vast energy reserves. The nation is now challenged, how¬ever, by dwindling reserves and the need to develop new sources consistent with the preservation of environmental quality. The development of new, virtually inexhaustible and environmentally acceptable sources cannot be expected for several decades. Meanwhile, we will have to depend on coal, nuclear energy and/or rigorous conservation measures.The net effect of environmental considerations has been to delay and perhaps ultimately eliminate the nuclear energy option as a national energy alternative. This forces a more positive move toward coal as the next major source of electrical power. Our coal resources are large, but the use and production of coal is also a threat to the environment. Thus, we seem to be moving from one major accessible source to another due to environmental concern only to face the probability that the alternative is also environ¬mentally unacceptable.Controversies revolving about energy choices must be resolved by an analysis of the relative benefits and impacts of these two sources and others. The pattern of changing energy sources is not new. We have moved from wood to coal to oil and gas in the past and must learn to adapt in the future. Rational decisions must be made relative to the utilization of intermediate energy sources pending development of promising future approaches. A collapse of current levels of energy supply could threaten our technological society and the means to develop a new energy base."
