The rediscovery and recognition of the magnetite potential of the iron mineralisation at the Hawsons Project area 60 km south of Broken Hill has the potential for the development of a new series of magnetite iron-ore operations across the Braemar Iron Formation in New South Wales and South Australia. Despite the low-grade of 16 per cent magnetite, the Hawsons project feasibility studies are indicating a positive business case for a large-scale 20 Mt/a of magnetite project for the following reasons:• The mineralisation is on a huge scale, with a major potential for increases beyond the already very large established resource of 1.4 Bt.• The mineralisation is particularly soft for crushing and grinding, with a Bond work index of 6.3 and an overall comminution power requirement of 6.7 kWh/t of ore. This equates to 39 kWh/t of concentrate which is significantly less than for similar projects.• The mineralisation fractures easily, preferentially along grain boundaries.• Location is close to mining infrastructure and a skilled workforce at Broken Hill, 60 km to the northeast.• It is close to road and rail infrastructure for access to the resource.• A high-grade, clean magnetic concentrate can be produced, with the only contaminant being silica.The deposit is a sedimentary siltstone which is considerably different to other known magnetite deposits. This caused significant differences in Davis Tube Recovery (DTR) results between laboratories so that the softness of the ore has required a close focus on, and changes to the laboratory procedures. A DTR procedure has been developed to provide consistent results across the deposit.Crushing and grinding test work has established a clear advantage in the use of the high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) crushing and grinding circuit for this particular ore. The power required for comminution using the HPGR crushing circuit is about half the power required for the Autogenous milling circuit.Therefore, despite the low magnetite grades, the Braemar Iron Formation in New South Wales and South Australia has the potential be a new magnetite iron ore province.

The commonly used Stopes-Heerlen coal petrographic classification and nomenclature has over the years been subject to variable interpretations. This paper discusses the problem with specific reference to the inertinite maceral group. The effect of various interpretations of the Stopes-Heerlen system on maceral analysis is discussed and illustrated by means of comparative analyses conducted by a number of laboratories in Australia. An attempt is made to define the reflectance thresholds used by the authors to subdivide the inertinite group; the genetic and technological significance of these thresholds are compared. The difficulties of distinguishing structured and non-structured macerals of the inertinite group is discussed in terms of possible improvements to the present Stopes-Heerlen system by extending the classification to include transitional maceral types.

Mt Todd lies towards the south end of the Pine Creek Geosyncline, sandwiched between the Cullen Batholith and the Edith Falls Basin, in an area of regionally metamorphosed sandstones, siltstones and shales. The Batman deposit, some 3 km west of Mt Todd is a sheeted quartz vein system hosted within greywackes of the Palaeoproterozoic Burrell Creek Formation (Finniss River Group). The gold-bearing quartz veins, trending 010¦-020¦ and dipping 60¦-70¦E, are commonly 0.5 to 5 cm wide and occur at intervals which are from 10 cm to 1 m apart. Gold tends to be restricted to the quartz veinlets and immediately adjacent country rock. Grade Control utilises two 4 m 'collar' samples which are collected from each 8 m production blasthole. The irregular distribution of the quartz veins and erratic gold mineralisation has resulted in a disseminated 'salt and pepper' type of gold occurrence, with only a poorly defined footwall. Delineation of ore and waste blocks for mining uses an approach which combines the smoothing effect of kriging with a pragmatic view of the raw data. Large ore blocks with simple geometry help to minimise mining dilution, reduce block variance and give good reconciliations to interpreted ore tonnes and grade. Daily mine face advance is reported against truck counts and provides continual comparison with budgeted production. All data processing uses Gemcom software, together with Lotus spreadsheets.

When the human eye fails in the evaluation of quality parameters in the extraction of minerals the use of laser-induced fluorescence analysis (LIF) can supply more detailed information on the composition of rocks. On the basis of measurements of selected raw materials engineering concepts for the use of this method in the mining industry as an innovative system for horizon control of mining machines will be described and the most important analysis parameters, influencing factors and interference variables are presented.

After eighteen months of discussions with employees and their trade unions, multiskilling was introduced at the Hellyer concentrator in early 1989, coinciding with the plant commissioning. Multiskilling was introduced with the Hellyer Skills Acquisition Program together with intensive training and performance assessment. Design innovations have helped to improve productivity. There have been some difficult times with personnel tending to return to the old and traditional ways of operating. In general, these have been overcome to ensure the success of multiskilling at Hellyer. The main factors making multiskilling effective have been continual training and assessment, and a competent team of shift supervisors. This has improved work standards towards the high level expected from a multiskilled approach without compromising safety standards.

The Mt Muro gold and silver deposit in Central Kalimantan has been in production since December 1994. The geology is characterised by narrow high-grade lodes containing gold and significant amounts of silver. From a largely untrained workforce in the grade control department, production per crew and per geologist has tripled during the three years of production. Grade control drilling evolved from blast hole sampling to reverse circulation sampling. National geologists are trained in basic modeling procedures. A fully integrated reporting and reconciliation system was programed and implemented.

The effect of titania (TiO2 ) addition on the sintering performance of hematite iron ore has been studied by doping pure TiO2 into a sinter blend. The results of laboratory-scale compact sintering tests confirmed the considerable effect of TiO2 addition on sinter strength and mineralogy. The tumble index measurements confirmed an improvement in the strength of the sinter in response to TiO2 addition. The melting point of the sinter was also affected by increasing the TiO2 content, indicating a possible relationship between coke breeze consumption and TiO2 on industrial-scale sintering of Ti-bearing ores. Analysis of the sintered structures using optical and scanning electron microscopes confirmed a general improvement in the overall pore structure and sinter melt characteristics with the addition of TiO2 to the sinter blend. Studying the ore textures in a discrete orebody is a novel approach to estimating liberation potential of the ore minerals present. As part of a PhD thesis, this project aims at classifying and quantifying the textures of the Hilton North orebodies, and at estimating their liberation characteristics.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. The successful processing of arsenopyritic ores is difficult and will be facilitated by a better understanding of the mineralogy of gold within arsenopyrite and the type of arsenopyrite in which gold is taken up. Solid solution gold in arsenopyrite is now well documented, and is a significant cause of refractory behaviour in gold processing. Investigations of the crystal structure and stoichiometry of arsenopyrite by X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis and convergent beam electron microscopy have been carried out in order to understand how the gold is incorporated into the structure. Variations in stoichiometry, particularly the As:S ratio, of arsenopyrite leads to variations in structural parameters. These variations result in slight changes in thermal behaviour. The distribution of invisible gold in an arsenopyrite grain is generally non-uniform and synthesised samples contain up to 2 wt per cent gold. A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique called ALCHEMI is being used to identify the substitution site. The process of gold agglomeration together with evidence of an ordered breakdown of arsenopyrite to pyrrhotite has been documented with the use of TEM. An arsenopyrite grain containing invisible gold was heated with an electron beam resulting in recrystallisation of arsenopyrite to pyrrhotite with arsenic being expelled. The gold is mostly insoluble in the pyrrhotite lattice and therefore exsolves out and combines with other gold atoms to form droplets at the boundary of the pyrrhotite.

The underground mining industry is seeing unprecedented shortages in skilled labour. Migration to Australia being at an all-time low is a leading concern, with pandemic-induced border closures and lockdowns only exacerbating the skills shortage, not causing it. The skills shortage is forecast to peak in 2023 and remain high beyond 2025. With this skills shortage in mind, mining companies throughout Australia are trying to deal with stricter protocols around Health and Safety (H&S) legislation, as well as more stringent controls on quality assurance, particularly as underground mines are reaching greater depths and extending into ‘unchartered territory’. The cumulation of this is proving to be a major hurdle in ‘effective’ operational geotechnical management. The drive for automation in mining is bringing another level of complexity. However, ‘once automation is up and running, it presents the opportunity to access talent pools that may not normally be available. There is also a change in skillset that will be required to drive automation. ‘The top two emerging roles that will be critical for the future of the mining industry are artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) specialists, and process-automation specialists’ (Writer, 2021). If anything positive has come from the pandemic, it has shown that remote working can be effective and that the drive for automation and critical evaluation of skills required on-site should be given greater priority. UQ acknowledges that the industry is changing, and that digital technology is required to be offered in mining related disciplines. Industry and academia need to do more to promote geotechnical engineering in mining and balance the curriculum to suit the future of mining and make it more enticing. The average cost of a geotechnical failure is about $5 million in coalmines and can be into the hundreds of millions of dollars if production is affected (Cartledge Mining and Geotechnics, 2020). The cost of a good geotechnical design far outweighs the potential losses if a failure were to occur. This alludes to the growing importance of experienced geotechnical consultancies playing a pivotal role in managing mine site geotechnical hazards, while the industry is developing the next generation of geotechnical engineers.

Rock formation at shallow depths is generally associated with complex geology consisting of many joints, fractures, bedding planes, etc. Fragmentation results from primary blasts in such strata are therefore significantly influenced by structural discontinuities. To evaluate the role of discontinuities, which is of great use in the design of blasts in such conditions, a two-stage investigation program was taken up. In the first stage, model scale tests were conducted with single and double holes with the strike of discontinuities parallel and perpendicular to the face. Later, field studies were conducted in a limestone mine and a coal mine. Blast patterns were modified based on the results obtained from model scale blasts. Secondary blasting was taken as a measure to assess blast performance in the field, whereas mean fragment size, fine and coarse fragmentation indices were considered as fragmentation measures in model scale tests. Model tests indicated confinement of explosive energy by the discontinuities surrounding blasthole. Crater shape and size were significantly influenced by the orientation of joints with respect to the face. Modified blast designs with decreased burden x spacing patterns resulted in improved fragmentation in the field. A reduction of about 12 per cent in explosive consumption was recorded with modified blast designs. Boulder formation was observed to decrease by about 79 per cent as well.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June, 1,,896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to -the works, the firewood being of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides).The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about 42 sq. 'miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. The tonnage of wood yielded per acre varies from 40 to 100 tons on stack measurement of 80 cub. ft. per ton, 60 tons per acre being considered a good average yield. The gross amount of firewood handled during the past 13 years approximates 1,200,000 tons, the greater portion of which has been obtained by ordinary tramming methods. More than 200 bursts in coal occurred at Leichhardt Colliery prior to December 1978 during mine development in the 6 m thick Gemini seam at depths approximating 400 m. Three large bursts each displaced more than 300 tonnes of coal and stone. Two of these which occurred in continuous miner developments, are described and compared. Geological settings, mining strains including induced cleavage and roof failures associated with bursts are described. A shotfiring technique replaced mechanised mining following a major incident at the colliery. Present mining procedures, the apparent improvement in stability of workings and ongoing geotechnical monitoring programme are discussed.

A thick sequence of alkaline intrusions and volcanic rocks underlies a Quaternary caldera on Liliir Island. The sequence is host to a still active sub-aerial hydrothermal system and associated epithermal gold mineralisation. Sub-horizontal alteration horizons exhibit progressively increasing chondrite norma-lised (La/Lu) en and (La/Sm) cn ratios from unaltered shoshonites, to the potassic alteration zone, to the argillic altera-tion zone to the advanced argillic alte-ration zone. The increasing fractionation of HEE, and especially of LHEE, up the alteration sequence is the result of de-creasing pH, temperature and alkalinity of the hydrothermal fluids with increa-sing alteration intensity. HRE3 were especially mobile in argillic and advanced argillic alteration units characterised by acid fluid conditions and large fluid volumes. Abundant Cl, S and CO2 within the hydrothermal fluids and thus abundant REE complexing agents and large fluid volumes favoured the mobility of REE during hydro-thermal alteration of the volcanic rocks and intrusions. Steam escape, mixing of the gases with groundwater and a change from a magmatic neutral chloride hydro-thermal system to a meteoric acid sulphate system was accompanied by liquid/vapour ratio changes, pronounced alkalinity, pH and temperature decreases, and fluid/rock ratio increases. This caused the mobili-sation, fractionation and deposition of PF.F.

The possibility of removing the phos phorus and sulphur contained in steelmaking slag has been studied by observing directly through the microscope melts heated on Pt- filaments. After a CaO crystal was placed in the molten slag, distributions of P, S and other elements formed around the CaO crystal were determined with the aid of EPMA. The results indicated that a layer of 2CaO SiO2 is formed on solid CaO in CaO-Si02 melts. Then between CaO and the newly formed compound the molten slag tends to migrate through cracks. For higher Fe 2 03 contents, the layers of the compounds 2CaO.Si02 and 3CaO SiO2 formed around the CaO crystal are not continuous but look more like particles, which promotes the dissolution of CaO. Phosphorus in slag was found to be enriched in the 2CaOòSi02 layer. Phosphorus in the 2CaO SiO2 phase is not related to the primary slag composition, being about 5-7% P205.. Sulphur in slag,as well as the phos- phorus,was concentrated in the 2CaO.Si02 phase. Disintegration due to weathering observed for slags produced in these investigations appeared to be due principally to hydration of lime.

A formalised approach to risk management has been regulated in the United Kingdom (UK) since the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (CDM) came into force in 1995. These regulations have recently been revised in 2007. In response to a series of significant claims around the world the UK insurance industry published a code of practice for risk management of tunnels in 2003, and that was followed by an international version in 2006. Probably one of the main contributions of this new approach is the recognition that health and safety risks can best be addressed early in the process, initially by the owner and then by the designers. One of the aims is to achieve elimination of risks by good design. The advantage of a risk-based approach to tunnel design is that all risks are considered explicitly, and any residual risks in the design are communicated clearly to the construction team. This paper looks at the implementation of this formalised approach to risk management with reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. The design has been undertaken in accordance with the requirements of the CDM regulations, and also in compliance with the Joint Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works in the UK. An outline of the risk-based design process used is provided, including examples.
