Dust diseases are much before the public at present, but little reliable information on the subject is readily available to the layman; even those rated as experts usually have a more or less theoretical conception of these diseases, their causes, remedies, and prevention. Until recently little attention has been given to prevention, and the usual attitude of the engineer, upon whom the main reliance for prevention ultimately must devolve, has been to let "sleeping dogs lie" or, more definitely, to "let well enough alone." However, the "laissez faire" attitude no longer is tenable; in the past few years numerous conditions have caused those engaged in industry, including mining, to study the subject with a view to ascertaining the facts upon which to formulate remedial measures, primarily preventive. This bulletin is an attempt to assemble information in convenient form on effects of breathing dusts, largely in the mining and allied industries. The literature on this subject is so extensive that no attempt has been made to include all published material or all types of dust diseases but only to assemble some of the more outstanding data on several aspects of the subject, especially with reference to silicosis.

The C.S.A. copper-lead-zinc mine, located 7 miles north of Cobar in central-western New South Wales, is the largest known mineral ocurrence in the Cobar mining field. The generally discordant orebodies occur within a strike width of 600 ft and an overall strike length of 1200 ft. They are enclosed by the steeply westdipping, west-facing sediments of the Cobar Group, and comprise lenticular steeply north-pitching and eastdipping zones of sulphide mineralization which range in composition from massive pyrite-sphalerite-pyrrhotitegalena to less massive pyrite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite varieties.The thinly bedded siltstones, shales, and greywackes enclosing the mineralization appear to have derived some of their constituents from volcanic sources. They have been metamorphosed to the greenschist facies of regional metamorphism. At least two stages of deformation and folding have occurred. The first stage folded the rocks on a south pitching fold axis into their present configuration, and superimposed a strong axial plane cleavage which subsequently guided the emplacement of the mineralization. The second stage of deformation is considered to have controlled the zonal distribution of the orebodies.

A utilização de moinhos verticais na indústria mineral vem ganhando destaque nas últimas décadas, quando granulometrias mais finas passaram a ser exigidas, principalmente por tais equipamentos apresentarem maior eficiência energética para moagem fina e remoagem em comparação aos moinhos tubulares tradicionais. O dimensionamento destes equipamentos ainda é fortemente embasado por experiências em projetos similares, metodologias proprietárias dos fornecedores de equipamentos e plantas piloto, criando a necessidade do desenvolvimento de ensaios laboratoriais abertos e confiáveis para guiar tais trabalhos. Outro problema observado é a quantidade de material necessária para a realização dos ensaios, da ordem de ao menos 1 kg, o que pode ser um impedimento nos estágios inicias de um projeto, quando pouca massa de material proveniente de furos de sonda está disponível. Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um ensaio laboratorial com moinho de jarro para dimensionamento de moinhos verticais segundo uma abordagem energética que utilize uma pequena massa, de aproximadamente 500 g. O ensaio proposto mostrou-se de maior praticidade em relação em relação ao ensaio com jarro maior, por utilizar aproximadamente metade da massa necessária e também apresentar boa aderência aos resultados industriais.

This study investigated the elution of precious and toxic metals from activated carbon. Gold and mercury are of primary interest, due to their value and environmental impact respectively. A laboratory elution rig was commissioned to simulate industrial Zadra and AARL carbon elution conditions. Mercury was found to elute most effectively in strong caustic cyanide solutions; gold was found to elute most effectively in hot low ionic strength solutions. As cyanide decomposes on contact with activated carbon at high temperatures, optimum elution conditions for gold conflicts with those for mercury?no practical compromise in conditions was found. However, sequential elution allowed reasonable recovery of both metals. Ongoing work is looking at the deportment of other metals under elution conditions.

Things are going well in the mining and construction industries world-wide. So good are things that from April 23 to 29 more than 500,000 visitors involved in those two industries attended the bauma 2007 Trade Show in Munich, Germany. Bauma is an international trade fair for construction and mining equipment that took place at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. It is hosted by Munich once every three years. This year was the most successful bauma ever and further strengthened the shows position as the world leader in the field.

As mining operations progress toward tele-mining and autonomous procedures, the need for machine performance monitoring increases. Presently, through a combination of vision, sound, and other subjective observations, an operator attempts to optimize the mechanical excavator’s operation. As the operator is moved away from the face in the case of tele-mining or completely removed for autonomous operation, the qualitative sensory input is lost. This lost information must be replaced with quantifiable sensory input. Chip formation detection may be a suitable replacement sensory input. Chip formation can be predicted with high confidence (>80%) through the analysis of the load waveform associated with the bit/rock interface.

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government commissioned the design and construction of the West Kowloon Drainage Improvement, Stage 2, Phase 2, Kai Tak Transfer Scheme (KTTS) project in 2000 to relieve potential flooding in Mong Kok caused by the insufficient capacity of the existing storm water drainage system. The KTTS involves construction of a 1.5km,4.4m drainage tunnel and a 450m long box culvert, running from Waterloo Road near Hereford Road to the existing Kai Tak Nullah in San Po Kong. This paper describes the design and construction of; the bored tunnel through both hard rock and soft ground using a slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), six associated access shafts, a connection structure at Waterloo Road and the box culvert connecting the bored tunnel to the outfall at Kai Tak nullah. Details will be provided on the contractor’s alternative designs adopted during the contract including the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete as one-pass temporary and permanent support for three of the shafts and modifications to the Engineer’s design for the box culvert structure.

Su abordaje conllevará necesariamente a implementar estrategias que a la vez garanticen “la preferencia en la contratación de mano de obra local” y “candidatos que cumplan los perfiles de puesto requeridos por la operación”. Ambos aspectos, pueden contraponerse en algún momento debido a las presiones comunales o a las urgencias operativas.

In this paper, the finite element method is used to obtain deformations of a rock tunnel. More than 3,000 numerical simulations and calculations were carried out. The analysis of this results has allowed to achieve mathematical formulations and graphs, to obtain in advance support monitored displacements in tunnelling construction, so they can be predicted before excavation and supporting woks. The application of the presented formulations and charts will aid engineers to control tunnel monitoring, reducing decision time when problems occur. The analysis is limited to cases involving elastic behaviour of the terrain for tunnels of average to good quality in rock, and to excavation sections of average or smaller dimensions for road tunnels. The results show that, in all cases, mathematical expressions to obtain induced displacements around tunnel excavations, have similar pattern than Kirsch (1898) expressions for circular excavations. As corollary of the achieved results, a method to estimate in situ natural geostress ratio K0=sh/sv , by means of convergence measurements, is presented. In diesem Beitrag wurden die Verschiebungen eines Tunnels durch die Methode de Finiten Elemente berechnet. Mehr als 3000 numerische Simulationen und Berechnungen wurden ausgeführt. Die Analyse dieser Resultate hat es ermöglicht, mathematische Formeln und Grafiken zu entwickeln, die zur Voraussage der Verschiebungen in Tunnel dienen, auch unter Betrachtung der verschiedenartigen Abstützungen. So können die Verschiebungen vor den Erdarbeiten und dem Bau der Abstützung abgeschätzt werden. Die abgeleiteten Formeln und Grafiken werden vor allem einen grossen Dienst für Ingenieure bei der Mithilfe zu zeitsparenden Entscheidungen im Tunnelbau und bei der Tunnelkontrolle leisten. Die analysierten Fälle sind auf eine elastische Modellierung des Baugrunds beschränkt, sowie auf eine mittlere bis gute Qualität des Felsens und auf die Aushebung von Abtragungsabschnitten mittlerer oder geringer Grösse für den Strassenverkehr. Die Resultate zeigen, dass in allen Fällen die hergeleiteten Formeln zur Berechnung der durch den Tunnelbau verursachten Verschiebungen um den Tunnel die gleiche mathematische Struktur haben wie diejenigen von Kirsch (1898) für kreisförmigen Bodenaushub. Als Korollarium der ausgeführten Berechnungen wird eine Methode zur Abschätzung der vorherrschenden in situ Geospannungs-Verhälniss K0=sh/sv angegeben, die von den Messungen der Verschiebungen im Tunnel ausgeht. Dans cet article, la méthode des éléments finis est utilisée pour obtenir les déformations d’un tunnel creusé dans la roche. Plus de 3000 simulations numériques et calculs ont été effectuées. L’analyse de ces résultats a permis de définir des modèles mathématiques et des abaques afin de prédire, avant l’excavation et les travaux de soutènement, les déplacements auscultés pendant la construction du tunnel. L’application de ces modèles et abaques permettra donc aux ingénieurs de contrôler les déplacements durant l’auscultation du tunnel et de réduire le temps de décision lorsque des problèmes surviennent. L’analyse est limitée au cas du comportement élastique du terrain pour des tunnels creusés dans de la roche de moyenne a bonne qualité, et à de sections d’excavation de petites à moyennes dimensions pour des tunnels routiers. Les résultats montrent que, dans tous les cas, les expressions mathématiques permettant d’obtenir les déplacements induits autour des excavations de tunnel, présentent des similitudes avec celles de Kirsch (1898) pour des excavations circulaires. "El 10 de Marzo de 1957, la Compañía Peruana de Petróleo ""El Oriente"", descubre petróleo en el pozo exploratorio Maqui N° 1, a unos 651 metros de profundidad. Por tal motivo, el presente trabajo señala la locación, las pruebas realizadas, la ubicación de los pozos, así como las condiciones petroleras descritas durante el proceso de exploración. El lugar se halla a 6 kilómetros al este de la ciudad de Contamana, situada sobre la orilla derecha del Medio Ucayali. Las operaciones de perforación empezaron en el grupo Capas Rojas, de donde el aceite procede de la porción de arenisca central de la entidad. Las pruebas se realizaron en un período de 72 horas, alcanzando una producción de 600 barriles por día, a través de un tubo reductor de 6 mm, un aceite de 39º API (0.830 gresp.), can 14 atm. de presión en la tubería de producción. En cuanto a las condiciones petroleras, el volumen de la exportación para los hidrocarburos del Oriente peruano, es limitado en dirección al Atlántico, dada la distancia y costo de mantenimiento, pero surgen perspectivas de consumo para el Perú del lado Pacífco, puesto que las condiciones de embarque de la zona, permiten que dicho oleoducto se ofrezca a un mercado fácilmente en el Brasil del Amazonas medio y superior. ."

The theme of the 2012 North American Tunneling conference (NAT) was ?Tunneling: Driving Value.? This theme best reflects where the tunneling and underground construction industry is to-day. Major advances that have been made in technologies have provided tremendous improvements in productivity, which, in turn, have allowed the industry to deliver more cost-effective and less disruptive solutions to the nation?s infrastructure needs. Despite a weak economy, domestically and globally, cities and states continue to spend billions on infrastructure improvements. For the underground construction industry, that means more transportation and water, wastewater, storm water projects and other underground structures. And, for each project completed, underground construction and tunneling technology grows. The NAT conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME, provides an outlet for technology transfers among professionals. This year?s conference, held in Indianapolis, IN June 24-27, attracted 918 attendees, up from 803 at the last NAT in 2010. The accompanying exhibit also featured 116 exhibitors occupying 140 booths. That was up from 108 booths in 2010. So, the meeting continues to grow as underground construction professionals throughout the world seek to learn from their peers.

Up until 1990 CoalCorp North Island's accident record was six times that considered acceptable in those NSW operations with good accident prevention programmes. This was an obvious avoidable burden on the company in both human and cost terms.   Late in 1989 an accident prevention programme was implemented with the objective of achieving a 50 per cent reduction in the lost time accident frequency rate within 12 months. The key to achieving this objective was recognised as being an attitude change in the total workforce from General Manager downward. Management commitment and action were seen to be critical to the success of the programme.   Through very basic and simple training programmes in accident investigation, analysis and reporting, communication, on-the-job coaching and in focusing on improving supervision skills, the original objective was achieved.   During 1991 the application of methods improvement and hazard recognition techniques are seen as the logical step to achieving a further 50 per cent reduction in the accident frequency rate.

In underground mining, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Boart Longyear Poland and KGHM, J. H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture a single-boom, single operator drill module for installation of 1.2 meter expansion bolt in a 1.6 meter height mine. The objective was to produce a machine to provide ergonomic improvements for the operator while working in the mine environment. This dictated the requirement for a small easily controlled, maintenance friendly design with a remote operator?s control station. The selected design method was to use starter and finisher drill steels. This combination, requiring a number of mechanized machine motions, provides the ability to drill the required depth in the specified mine height. To accomplish the task from a remote location, a conscious decision was made to employ current technology in the form of small pressure compensated hydraulics and electronic controls. The result of the design method is a modular assembly with each sub-component designed to be replaceable and adjustable independently from other machine components. The low profile remote roof bolting module is made up of six major sub-components. Each major component is painted a different color to help the operator make the visual connection from the drill module to the operator?s control/display monitor. The Stabilizer (White) secures the module between the mine top and floor. The Drillhead (Orange) produces the drilling rotation and torque but also must slide out of position to allow the machine to manipulate the drill consumables. The Drill Steel Carousel (Blue) holds and indexes the starter and finisher steel from position to position. The Manipulator Arm (Green) moves and guides the drill steels and drill consumables from position to position during installation. The Roof Reference Guide (Yellow) locates the mine roof and guides the drill steels and drill consumables into position. The Linear Bolt Carousel (Purple) holds the drill consumables. The low profile remote roof bolting module allows the operator to drill and install a roof bolt manually or automatically with the push of a button. This design substantially reduces the operator?s exposure in the mine environment, as well as inherent pinch points and rotary hazards. Development of Underground Gold Processing Plants Underground gold processing plants have potential advantages over traditional surface installations related to a smaller environmental footprint, reduced capital and mining costs, improved security and increased value of the product delivered to surface. The concept of processing gold ores on the surface is the traditional paradigm. A process of pre-concentration of ore underground is likely to result in a major shift in operating costs. In particular, run of mine ore or a large proportion of it will not need to be transported to the surface. As a result, environmental and financial benefits are likely. Underground plants are likely to be pre-concentration systems where the process product is a high-grade concentrate and tailings for stope backfill. Units will be either static or modular. Concentration methods will be gravity and/or flotation or leach based. This paper discusses the development underground gold plants from early concept, through to the world's first operational unit, a newly commissioned unit and the technical basis of a fully modular system.

En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la implementación de este programa, donde la data de estas vetas y cuerpos polimetálicos son trabajados con el objetivo de automatizar los trabajos de geología, ingeniería y topografía. Los resultados obtenidos permitirán avanzar en aplicaciones diversas como: estimaciones locales y globales, control de leyes, proyecciones de costo de minado, evaluación de estrategias de dilución, diseño y planeamiento de minado.

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. Iron was a limiting factor, and a method of eliminating its interference was needed.The method now developed overcomes these shortcomings, and gives a reliable result with a purple line for assay values of 0·5 dwtjton and over. Este sistema es de fácil instalación y mantenimiento puesto que se basa en electricidad y agua, reduciendo costos y a su vez mejorando las condiciones de trabajo a través de la versatilidad del presente sistema.
