THE Bureau of Mines has received many requests for Information concerning the methods its laboratories use for analyzing coal and coke and determining their heating value. The fuel investigations now conducted by the Bureau of Mines are an outgrowth of the work undertaken at the Government coal-testing plant erected in 1904 at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, and the methods for proximate and ultimate analysis of coal used by the Bureau of Mines are based on those originally adopted by the chemists of the coal-testing plant and followed in the subsequent chemical work of the Government fuel-testing plants at St. Louis, Mo., Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburgh, Pa. The many valuable suggestions and criticisms received from N. W. Lord, director of the School of Mines, and from E. E. Somermeier, professor of metallurgy, of Ohio State University, at that time, are greatly appreciated; development of many of the methods for the proximate and ultimate analysis of coal now used by the Bureau of Mines is chiefly clue to these men.

In 1939, the author made a survey of relative gravity in the Mediterranean-basin, 41° 35,5' to 41° 56.3' northern latitude and 0° 10,3' to 0° 28' longitude, referred to Mt. Mario. Ten stations were covered; 25 other stations had been occupied in the vicinity of Rome and in Albanian mountains during previous years. The new measurements revealed gravity anomalies ranging within the following limits: (1) With a free-air reduction, between + 29 and + 120 mgl., average + 60 mgl.; and (2) with a Bouguer reduction, between + 22 and + 87 mgl., average + 41.5 mgl. - V. Efforts to win an enriched manganiferous product from the Missouri Valley deposits of South Dakota have included an application of most known ore-dressing devices and have been largely unsuccessful. At least two methods showed some promise of success and were the subjects of detailed Investigation by the Bureau of Mines during the period from July 1945 to August 1947. A series of mining and beneficiation tests were undertaken to determine conditions under which the most feasible concentration methods could be employed and to define the limits of such applications in terms of the character of the final beneficiated product. In the absence of a significant current market for any conceivable product of beneficiation, the extent to which applied methods might be considered successful was measured in terms of ratios of recoveries to grade, regardless of the adaptability of such beneficiated products to further metallurgical or direct usage. The results of all investigations show that production of a shale-free, concretionary, manganese-bearing product by any known method requires great sacrifices in manganese recovery. Products of beneficiation, with specifications permitting some inclusion of shale, can probably be most effectively produced by methods employing specialized jigging equipment as the principal functional unit of a process.

This Bureau of Mines publication consists of an overview of the mine waste management research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The following papers, given at a Technology Transfer Workshop, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety and environmental considerations of mine waste disposal In recent years. Current work related to legislation passed in the last 10 years and their subsequent standards includes the development of adequate monitoring systems, development of stability and seepage prediction and control techniques, control of runoff water, and control of leaching solutions. Selected topics are included here that cover coal mine waste disposal, embankment slope stability monitoring, flow failures of mine tailings impoundments, and controlled burnout of abandoned coal mine fires. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

In addition to the normal work and that pertaining to strategic minerals, the Metallurgical Division has been made responsible for carrying on major investigations in the development of processes' for the treatment of low-grade domestic manganese ores that heretofore have failed to yield products suitable for the preparation of ferromanganese, an alloy essential to every ton of steel produced. These investigations are particularly important at this time because of their part in tucking this country self-sufficient with regard to manganese when the stock-piled ore becomes e exhausted and as foreign shipments of ferro-grade ore are cut off. The results indicate that there is a good probability of accomplishing this objective, while at the same time conservation may be promoted through the use of normally useless material from the large, low-grade ore deposits.

"INTRODUCTION Alunite occurs within a radius of 10 miles of Marysvale, Piute County, Utah, in veins and as replacements of igneous rocks. A number of each type of deposit was explored by the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Geological Survey, under the Strategic Minerals program during 1942. The exploratory work comprised geologic and topographic mapping, diamond drilling,,bulldozer and hand trenching, sinking test pits, rehabilitation of old workings, sampling alunite exposures, and constructing and repairing roads.ACKNOWLEDGNENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits; the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the implications of in-mine ground control on the automated or remotely controlled operation of longwall mining equipment, Perhaps the greatest challenge to longwall automation researchers is the development of systems that will continuously function in the complex and unpredictable underground environment. The high degree of environmental variability, together with conditions brought about by the extraction process, makes complete automation of longwall mining a difficult task. The intellectual thought processes and split-second decision making required to avert disasters are lost when workers are removed from the face. As many mine operators can attest, minor problems, left unresolved, can eventually accumulate and lead to catastrophic consequences. The automation process will have to assess and manage various routine problems that are otherwise resolved through worker observation and experience.

The successful injection of liquids into subsurface permeable formations for production stimulation, storage, or waste disposal requires a rapid, precise, and accurate method of determining the permeability of porous solids. This report describes a method and apparatus, developed by the Bureau of Mines, that use the principle of specific-volume permeametry. Calibration of the apparatus over a wide range of permeabilities and standardization of several apparatus constants have eliminated many of the tedious calculations and problems of manipulation common to some other methods. Improvements in reproducibility and accuracy have resulted from reducing experimental measurements to one parameter--time. Specific permeabilities of reservoir rock samples are determined directly from a chart that relates elapsed time to a permeability equivalent to that determined by bubble-tube measurements.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1979, 12 companies operated 32 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 64% of production. Washington, Oregon and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States 20%; other Northern States 32%; and other Southern States 16%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1979 was valued at over $6 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1979, building accounted for about 24%; packaging 23%; transportation 22%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 8%; and other uses, 12%.

The lack of technical information regarding the physical characteristics of kaolins and bauxitic kaolins, rejected during the mining of bauxite near Eufaula, Ala., has retarded their commercial utilization. This investigation was undertaken to determine their behavior when used in refractories. Ores were evaluated as refractory raw materials by compounding dry-press mixtures and specialties following procedures common to the industry. Products now on the market were used for comparison in laboratory evaluation.

A laboratory-scale investigation was made of the basic problems involved in developing a ceramic heat exchanger to operate at high temperatures for using nuclear heat from gas-cooled process-heat reactors. Technical data were obtained on transferring heat by forced-convection from helium to air in a single-tube vitreous-alumina heat exchanger. Coolant air was passed through the annulus parallel with, and either concurrently or counter to, the flow of helium inside the tube. The data obtained pertain to removing heat from the helium. Average inside film coefficients were determined at mean surface temperatures of 200° to 1,570° F., inlet-gas temperatures of 1,450° to 2,665° F., and Reynolds numbers up to 560. The gas-to-surface temperature ratios were varied from 1.05 to 7.6. The tabulated results are shown in the appendix at the end of this report. The film coefficients of heat transfer were correlated by taking into account the physical properties of the helium at the average fluid temperature. With experimental conditions pointing to a laminar flow, the Nusselt number was found to decrease as the ratio of gas-to-wall temperature was increased to a value of 3. However, within the range tested, gas-to-wall temperature ratios above 3 did not affect the Nusselt number, regardless of the value of the Graetz number. Thus, beyond this point any increase in this ratio ceased to influence the heat-transfer relationship.

This Bureau of Mines study identifies and examines the costs of Federal, State, and local environmental protection controls on domestic phosphate rock mining, The costs include the expenditures needed to comply with government regulations and the effects that these expenditures and regulations have on supply. The study analyzes costs of environmental impact assessments, air and water quality standards, reclamation laws, potential solid waste controls, and local government restrictions. In addition, an industry survey and the Bureau's Minerals Availability System (MAS) are used to evaluate land management policies that restrict access to phosphate resources, Conclusions drawn from these analyses confirm that (1) domestic phosphate mining has incurred substantial control costs and may be subject to significant new regulatory costs in the next several years, (2) certain environmental controls can discourage mining investment, (3) environmental policies governing land-use controls affect the disposition of sizable phosphate resources, and are key determinants in the development of those resources on the Federal do- main, and (4) environmental costs could diminish the competitiveness of domestic producers.

The techniques described employ a computerized analysis and a new method of data presentation called composite graphing. The underlying theory, its practical application to the data, and the experimental equipment and procedure are described.

A Blastcorder4 was calibrated on the Bureau of Mines shaking table in the frequency range of 12 to 40 c.p.s. and in the amplitude range' of 0.25 to 1.0 g. The results of this calibration study show that in the frequency range of 12 to 30 c.p.s. the average accuracy of the Blastcorder is approximately ± 0.1 g.

This report reviews the current state of the art of remote control techniques for underground continuous miners. A delineation of aspects requiring additional data is presented. Also a summary and delineation are presented in overview form for the related section functions: roof control, haulage, ventilation, power supply and rock dusting. The automated remotely controlled continuous miner project is a long-range research effort. However, the program has been divided into intermediate steps resulting in incremental production increases throughout the program. Data are developed relating the impact of our proposed research and development accomplishments to potential productivity impact.

At present, there is little knowledge concerning the shear strength of clays containing floating rock particles with concentrations from 0 to 30%. In practice, the effect of rock particles is typically disregarded in shear strength analysis The two primary reasons for this are: 1) a lack of agreement concerning the influence of rock particles on material strength, and 2) the expense and difficulty of testing day-rack mixtures with existing laboratory procedures. These factors have impeded the development of successful slope remediation design techniques far colluviums derived from resistant sedimentary rocks or spoil produced from surface mining. This study reviewed 3 1 technical papers which contain analysis of shear strengths for clay and sands with varying mixtures of rock particles. These technical papers, published over the last 40 years, are comprised of field case studies, laboratory evaluations, and theoretical analysis. Evaluation of this body of knowledge ha shown that the shear strength gradually increases with increasing percentages of floating particles in unsaturated clays.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses the electric-arc reduction of zirconium and hafnium oxides with carbon yielding a metal-metallic carbide mixture. The carbon to oxide ratio in the feed determines the metal to carbide ratio in the product. A sample of this product was produced -or testing as a feed for the deBoer iodide-dissociation process. A new technique for producing pure carbides is described, which uses the intense heat of the arc to volatilize the carbide. INTRODUCTION The classification system for German coal mining is the result of approximately 100 years of experience in roadway development and longwall mining. It is also based on different research projects covered by national and European research programs. Over the past 30 years, more then 600,000 m of road-ways have been driven and employed for mining activities. To properly describe the German rock mass classification system, therefore, it is useful to take a look at the main geomechanical preferences and common support systems. The decision about the most effective development technique and support system is based on a synthesis of rock mass classification and geomechanical analysis. The properties of surrounding rock, the in situ stress, and the influence of mining activities in several seams at each German mine must be considered for the evaluation of the expected deformation of the roadway. The mine layout, the requirements of ventilation and fire prevention, as well as the need to maintain emergency escape routes for the miners, require that the gate roads remain usable after the passage of the longwall face in most cases. Moreover, the gate roads must be maintained despite the high stresses that are applied during longwall retreat mining. Therefore, gate road design must address a broad spectrum of potential deformation environments. In the past, when gate roads were supported solely with yielding steel arches, lithologic descriptions of the surrounding strata conditions were adequate for the dimensioning of support and the prediction of the roadway deformation. The current conditions of multiple-seam mining at depths of up to 1,700 m require combined support systems, including pattern bolting and backfilled steel arches. Rock bolt support is used for development, after which (typically 50–100 m outby the face) the steel arches are installed and backfilled with building material (concrete) in order to achieve an optimized development rate. The rock mass classification system described below was developed especially for the conditions of German hard-coal mining. It includes the stress distribution caused by multiseam workings (including crossing goaf edges of former longwalls), as well as in situ stresses due to greatdepth and the presence of tectonic faults. It is based on the evaluation of four parameters: • Geotechnical analysis of drill cores • Geotechnical observation of the development face • Geotechnical classification of tectonic structures (faults) • Standard classification derived from geotechnical assessment and evaluation of stress conditions (using numerical modeling for stress calculation) ROCK STRENGTH One of the most important input parameters for describing strata conditions is the strength of the rock. The German classification system is based on a description of lithotypes. This method has been used successfully since the 1950s and is based mainly on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the material. An evaluation of the rock strength observed in a survey of approximately 82,500 samples of rock core yielded the results shown in Figure 1. The three most common coal measure rock types are mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone. Each shows a specific mean UCS level and a different spread between the minimum and maximum values. Sandstones, in particular, have a wide spectrum of compressive strength, ranging from approximately 40 MPa to greater than 130 MPa, with an average of 85 MPa. The causes of this wide range include different sedimento-logical preconditions, facies, and digenetic processes. [ ]

"INTRODUCTION The Lookout Mountain coal deposits were examined by J.L. Stratton, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in April and May 1943. The area investigated includes that part of southern Lookout Mountain in townships 4 to 8, south, ranges-9 to 11 east, and contains approximately 140 square miles in DeKalb and Cherokee Counties in northeastern Alabama (fig. 1.)Six coal seams having a minable thickness of 18 or more inches are represented in the area. The third seam, known locally as the Hill seam, has been correlated with the Upper Cliff No.1 seam and is referred to as such throughout this report. The preliminary investigation indicated that the Upper Cliff No. 1 seam is a low-volatile, high-grade coking coal. The work done on this project was confined principally to determining the amount and grade of coal in this seam.The only existing maps of mines in the area were one of the Lookout Fuel Co. at Lahusage, Ala. (fig. 2), and one of the Lookout Mountain Iron Co. at Battelle, Ala. (fig. 3), Consequently, to gain some knowledge of the grade and tonnage mined, surveys of the other mines were necessary. Many of them were caved, and many were filled with water, necessitating considerable preliminary work."
