The various objectives of dredging at sea require different methods and radically different equipment for their optimum fulfillment. In the majority of cases, sea dredging is done by means of dredging equipment connected to a pontoon or ship floating at the surface. As the supporting hull is subject to the influence of waves, swells, currents and wind, the connecting point of the dredging equipment to the hull will generally move relative to the sea bottom with 6° of freedom. The more important hull motions are surge, heave, pitch and roll. Depending on the actual sea and weather conditions and the size of the hull, some of these motions can be so large that dredging equipment of rigid construction (normal or inland dredges) cannot be used. In those cases where mechanical disintegration of the bottom is necessary and where accurate dredging is required, the designer must find a solution for this problem. For cases where the bottom consists of soils that can be handled by plain suction, highly sophisticated dredging equipment such as the trailing suction hopper dredge permit dredging under all but the most severe sea state conditions. This type of dredge picks up the soil from the sea bottom while slowly underway. The drag suction head is fitted on a suction pipe of such flexibility that the supporting ship can carry out all six movements in relation to the draghead (heave, pitch, roll, sway, yaw and surge), while the draghead remains in firm contact with the bottom. The suction pipe is fitted with flexible hoses, a universal hinge, a horizontal hinge, axial turning gland and sliding turning gland with horizontal axis and is suspended flexibly from the ship incorporating swell compensating buffer gear, keeping the wires taut and the draghead bottom contact pressure fairly constant while the dredge moves up and down. Due to the fact that the draghead has a low bottom contact pressure and has little tendency to sink into the bottom, this compensation is not difficult to realize.

When Marco Polo visited China in the 13th century, no one knew what black powder was except the Chinese; they knew enough to make dazzling fireworks with it. But the realization that black powder could also do useful work came much later and, like all important discoveries, it altered the course of history. It was in the 14th century that black powder was first used to break rock in a very crude way; there were no drills and the powder was simply poured into cracks and exploded by setting it afire. Because its energy value was pretty low, the need for something more powerful was felt when the industrial revolution began. In the 1850s, miners began experimenting with liquid nitroglycerine on a limited scale. This was a very sensitive and dangerous explosive. Fortunately in the 1860s, Alfred Nobel succeeded in stabilizing nitroglycerine by absorbing it in kieselguhr-and a new product, dynamite, was born. With it, miners were able to unleash the great energy of nitroglycerine for blasting purposes. But dynamite was still a very sensitive explosive. In subsequent years, other explosives of various strengths and characteristics were developed, such as blasting gelatin, gelatin dynamite, ammonia dynamites, (all containing some nitroglycerine or nitrostarch), and liquid oxygen explosives. These products and their variations supplied the blasting trade for many years. A grained ammonium nitrate product containing some carbonaceous material entered the market in the 1930s. This explosive had below-zero sensitivity-meaning: a No. 6 blasting cap imbedded in it would not detonate it. A more sensitive initiator, called a primer, was needed to detonate this mixture. From Rags to Primacord to Solid-State The first initiator for an explosive charge was probably a rag slowly burning its way to the charge; this method was quite unreliable. Then came the burning fuse, which was an improvement. Next was the nonelectric blasting cap initiated by a fuse. With these initiators, a miner needed quick reflexes and good legs; upon lighting the fuse, he had to run immediately for cover. Development of the electric blasting cap that allowed for accurate timing eliminated this hazard; the electric cap, however, introduced other safety problems because of its susceptibility to extraneous electricity, e.g., ground currents, lightning, and static electricity. These caps also became available in millisecond delays. Development in the mid-1930s of Primacord, a detonating fuse insensitive to electrical currents or impact, further reduced blasting hazards, and is generally acknowledged as the safest known means of initiation. Eventually, Primacord millisecond connectors also became available for delay patterns in blasting. In the mid-1960s, the Primadet delay was introduced; it is a practical nonelectric detonator system that offers the precise timing of electric blasting caps-and is immune to the hazards or effects of extraneous electricity. Recently, Research Energy of Ohio, Inc. introduced a new type of solid-state blasting machine that combines a sequential timer and delay caps. It enables the efficient breakage of rock with a minimum amount of shock, ground vibration, and noise. Improvements in Blast-Hole Drilling World War II created an enormous demand for coal and other minerals in the U.S. and elsewhere. Great efforts and large amounts of capital were spent to find new mineral deposits and develop better mining methods. But while mechanization in mining proceeded at a rapid pace particularly in open-cut work, there was a definite lag in developing new or improved machines for drilling blast holes. The industry continued to depend largely on horizontal, churn, and pneumatic drills. No better machine was available for large scale production. The need for improvement in this phase of mining became more acute in the post-war years. Despite efforts toward further mechanization, mining costs rose rapidly because of mounting inflation and increasingly high wages. In most operations, drilling and blasting the overburden became the principal item of cost. Therefore, whatever size holes were being drilled, the holes had to be spaced so that any foot of the bore hole could be loaded with the maximum load required for the number of cubic yards of material that each foot of the hole was carrying. THE- impression which the public has of northern Canada is that it is a' vast wilderness of forests; river's, and. lakes, sparsely inhabited by. a few Indians and `containing a few, scattered trading posts of the Hudson Bay Co. This is far from the facts. The building of the Canadian Pacific Railway led to the discovery, in 1883, of the nickel deposits of Sudbury, Ont.; these are the largest known nickel deposits in the world and produce about 90 per cent. of the world's output of nickel. The building of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway north, from North Bay, to open up farming lands along Lake. Temiskaming, resulted in the discovery and development of the great silver deposits of the Cobalt area, Ontario. Since the discovery of these deposits in 1903 to Dec. 31, .1923, Cobalt has produced a total of ' 327,301,897 oz. of silver, valued at $212,668,434, and paid in. dividends $88,338,185. In 1923 the production of Cobalt amounted to 10,285,247 oz. of silver. Just south of Cobalt, in South Lorrain,. a. new silver district has recently been developed and mills have started production. These deposits are of such extent that 'a branch railroad is under construction from Cobalt to that area. Northwest of Cobalt is the Gowganda silver area which is also a producer of silver ore and is now attracting outside attention. This area is not connected by railroad.

IN THE operation of oil properties there are various difficulties with pumping wells which can often be overcome or greatly lessened if sufficient attention is, directed towards pump and tubing problems. The difficulties referred to are the wearing out of pumps, sanding up of pumps, and the sanding up of the hole. As the perforations in the oil strings are large and the oil and sand loose and unconsolidated considerable trouble is often encountered in pumping wells due to the ease with which' the sand can come into the holes. DETERMINING FLUID LEVEL In determining the proper depth at which to tube a well it is essential to first find out something about the behavior of the fluid in 'the hole: Facts in regard to this natter can be obtained by finding the fluid level on pulling the tubing, by making a pumping test on the well tubed to various depths, and by bailing tests during cleaning out work. In ordinary oil field operations it is customary to take the fluid level at the time of pulling the tubing. This 'can only be done when the pump is not sanded up. Ground support at the Thompson Mine emphasizes scaling, rock bolting and wire mesh screening on the backs and walls of all underground stoping and development areas and also full column grouted cable bolting in the bulk mining areas. This paper describes the equipment for the point anchored rock bolts as well as the full column cable bolts. Modifications in design and testing of all components and procedures has ensured a safe and efficient method of ground support for the mining conditions existing at the Thompson Mine.

LEAD SMELTERS AND REFINERS in 1932 were confronted with the problem of adjusting operations and costs to curtailed production and consumption at reduced prices, a problem which has been partially solved at least by improvements in operating technique and increased efficiency. At the Mount Isa properties in Australia, a third blast furnace and additional Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines were installed during the year, designed to increase the production to 6,000 tons of bullion per month. The large proportion of lead carbonate in the ores to be treated has presented metallurgical problems. Of the total lead contained in the concentrates to be smelted, two-thirds is Dresent as carbonates and one-third as sulfides. In the iiitial operations, the resulting Dwight-Lloyd sinter was soft, contained an excessive amount of fines, and was easily fusible. When charged to the blast furnaces it developed accretions in the upper part of the furnace owing to the easily fusible lead carbonates softening and fusing at the top of the charge column. This was remedied by the addition to the sinter feed of diluents of higher melting point, granulated slag and crushed limestone. The sinter feed consists of concentrates, Cottrell dust and wind-box cleanings, totalling 57 per cent of the charge; return sinter fines 15 per cent; granulated slag 23 per cent; and crushed limestone 5 per cent. The sinter produced contains 34 per cent lead and 0.5 per cent sulfur. Experiments indicated that double sintering under these conditions was of no advantage, so the original plan of single sinter treatment was retained.

The notion prevails that writing is a knack, that the skilful use of the pen is a gift of nature. This is an error. Dogberry may be responsible for it; he said: "To be a well-informed man is the gift of fortune, but to write and read comes by nature". Because Dogberry said it, we may be sure that Shakespeare thought otherwise. Ability of any sort may be partly innate, but my own observation and experience lead me to conclude that most of the easy writers have become so by constant practice. As I recall the names of men successful with the pen, I remember that most of them have written a great deal and have taken particular pains to improve their style. The suggestion that proficiency in the difficult art is a happy accident provokes a sardonic smile. The larger part of the great writing in our literature is the result of persistent effort. An easy fluency has been the undoing of many; their flamboyant and fantastic scribbling has proved as perishable as froth. This criticism applies to technical writing also; in order that a technical description or discussion may hold the interest of the reader, at least long enough to cause him to read it to the end, the writing must be done carefully and systematically; otherwise it will fail in its purpose of conveying information. Clearness is absolutely essential. "It is not enough to use language that may be understood; it is necessary to use language that must be understood."* The purpose of writing, at least of that which is meant to be read by others, is not only to express ideas but to communicate them. The commercial production of electrolytic manganese on a small scale commenced in 1939. The writer made a short report on the progress of production and utilization in Mining and Metallurgy for January 1941. Progress during the last two years, naturally, has been more rapid. In June 1940, Congressman (now Senator) Scrugham presented a proposal to Congress for an appropriation authorizing erection of a pilot plant for " the production of metallic manganese by electrolytic or other means." As a result of this, a pilot plant, having a capacity of a few hundred pounds per day was built at Boulder City, Nev. Subsequent appropriations permitted expansion of the plant to about a ton per day. Much has been learned in this plant about electrolytic manganese, and the product even in its small way has found war uses of considerable importance. Meanwhile, the Knoxville plant of the Electro Manganese Corporation, the sole commercial producer, was expanded to about 4 tons per day to supply needed material for the war program. Other proposals for commercial plants have not been favorably received by the War Production Board. The Bureau reported on one such proposal by the American Alloys and Chemical Corporation. Practice at BouldeR City The present practice, as carried out at Boulder City, which is being described in more detail in a current paper by the Bureau staff at Boulder City, starts with a manganese dioxide ore containing about 20 per cent manganese. Currently this ore comes from the Three Kids deposit near Las Vegas. The steps for the production of electrolytic manganese, in general, are as follows: 1. The manganese in the ore is reduced to MnO. 2. The MnO is dissolved from the ore in spent electrolyte, which contains about 38 to 47 grams per liter of free sulphuric acid, 135 grams per liter of ammonium sulphate, and 10 to 12 grams per liter of Mn as sulphate. In the leaching step the manganese is built back up to 32 to 36 grams per liter of Mn as sulphate; the pH is adjusted to neutral by means of gaseous ammonia and passed through thickeners. 3. The electrolyte is purified by adding H2S, which precipitates the heavy metals. After filtering, ferrous sulphate is added to the solution and oxidized with air and the solution is filtered and clarified on a precoat filter. 4. The purified catholyte is electrolyzed in a diaphragm cell using stainless-steel cathodes and lead-silver anodes. The current density is about 45 amp. per sq. ft. Current efficiencies of 60 to 65 per cent are regularly obtained.

As I drove in from the airport on Sunday somebody said 'On the right you will see Duntroon, which is the military training school of Australia.' So I asked the driver, where did they get that name? 'Oh,' he said, 'from some people who built a house there. That was it's name- Duntroon.' It strikes a note with me because, that's the name of a 12th century castle on the west coast of Scotland where I spend what leisure hours I have and, therefore, it establishes the long connection between Australia and my native land. There is also a story I should tell you about the oil industry and its upsurge in Scotland recently which has resulted in great prosperity. And in Edinburgh, the walls of the banks are bulging-because of the incursion of foreign exchange and other resources. Charlotte Square, as some of you know, is the centre of the Scottish financial world and at one of the corners of Charlotte Square, where ho streets intersect, there are three stores-three emporia on the ground floor. Two of them at opposite corners are banks: The Royal Bank of Scotland, and not to be beaten by that, The Bank of Scotland. But the third building is occupied, or was occupied, by a furniture store over many years-very high-grade, high quality furniture that the elite of the Edinburgh society always supported. And suddenly, the store was cleared out and in came a bunch of carpenters and other people busily engaged in rebuilding the store, and finally the new tenants arrived on the scene.

"The reduction works of the Boston & Montana Reduction department, near the north end of this dam is one of the reduction plants belonging to the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, the other being at Anaconda. These works employ about 1,100 men and have a capacity of about 3,800 tons of crude ore per day. This plant is now being remodeled to embody results of experiments and investigations which have been made with a view to more economic.al treatment of ores. A brief description of the plant as it will be after the remodelling is as follows:Concentrator Department: Consists of six units or sections, each section treating from 550 to 600 tons of crude ore per day. This department is not being. remodelled at the present time. A concentrating process, however, has been developed and partially installed in the old mill, and an experimental section embodying this concentration process has also been installed at the concentrator at Anaconda."

A. J. Langhammer.—That is rather asking a question of the wrong man. However, I will reply to the question from our point of view. There is a considerable amount of iron powder available but the properties vary over a wide range. Powder metallurgy has progressed to the stage where we recognize certain requirements in powdered iron, and what may be a good powdered iron for one application will not necessarily fit the picture for the next one. Further, I believe that there is room for great improvement in the properties of powdered iron. Also, that there is only a limited quantity of powdered iron available having certain specific properties in which we are at the moment interested. F. P. Peters.—May I have a word? With all possible respect to the contributions of the Chrysler Corporation (and they have been tremendous) to the war effort, I think it is easy to get from part of Mr. Langhammer's discussion a false impression of vaster possibilities than really exist. It would be well if in addition to Mr. Langhammer some other manufacturers of machine parts' might tell us in the next few minutes some of the limitations they have found. For example, what is the maximum tensile strength that is being produced in a commercial part in production today? And what is the actual size limitation on bearings that are in operation and are standing up well? We should always bear in mind the fact—and I think Mr. Langhammer will agree with me— that quoting on a particular part does not necessarily mean placing it in production. In many cases it may be several months before the quotation is resolved and we know whether the part can be made. Let us open up this thing for a little free-for-all discussion of some of the ceilings that do exist in the design of machine parts made by powder metallurgy. The ceiling is not unlimited, and Mr. Langhsmmer will agree with that, 3 am sure. H. Hendriks.*—I do not think that there is so much limitation in the making of powder metallurgic manufactured parts as mentioned. Last year we had the problem of making dies for a special machine used in the manufacturing of slide fasteners. This part was wearing out very fast. It was very hard to make, it had to be hobbed out of a special steel and it was a difficult thing to manufacture in general. The tolerances were one half of one thousandth of one inch on all dimensions. We submitted this die to a manufacturer of powder-metal parts. He thought that it was impossible, but we were not as skeptical as he was and decided to try it anyway. The Canadian General Electric Carboloy Division, in Toronto, gave us then the design for the dies, which we made to their specifications. When the first part was delivered, we submitted it to our Inspection Department and its check showed that all the tolerances were right on the dot. They delivered I9 parts of exact specification, then they went off the beam; they could not keep to the tolerances. It took them a long time to get back again. We do not know what happened, but the main point I want to' make is that if a problem is attacked in the right may, the dies are made right and corrected as to dimensions found out by experiment, I do not think that there is so much diffculty in making powder-metal parts to close tolerances.

THE ORDINARY well log is subjected to a great deal of criticism, much of which is well founded. Sometimes, though, the difficulty in interpreting the log is due to the fact that the geologist or engineer using the logs does not know the limitations of the drilling method used. The rotary drill, especially, has inherent limitations that make it difficult, to secure .definite information at all times. The identification of well-defined key beds is about all that can be expected from the rotary log. The formation in a drilled hole, as reported by the driller; has a direct relation to the speed with which the drill makes the hole or to the reaction of the various strata on the bit, called the "feel of the bit." When this is not thoroughly understood by the geologist or engineer endeavoring to interpret the log, the result is an erroneous correlation with other wells or a discarding of the log as worthless. GENERAL TERMS Hard and Soft.-Hard and soft are relative terms. In the case of well logs, they are very misleading as they are used in connection with both resistance to abrasion and resistance to percussion. In technical rock classification, hardness is relative resistance to abrasion. The term brittleness is used in connection with resistance to blows. These terms are misleading to the geologist or engineer who is not familiar with both the cable-tool, or standard tool, method of drilling and the rotary method. In the case of the standard tools, the driller's report of the hardness of the formation is in terms of its resistance to blows. For instance, a cable-tool driller might be able to make from 30 to 50 ft. a tour in a brittle limestone, which he would call soft and at the same time he might call a relatively soft (from a purely mineralogical standpoint) gypsum hard, because it is somewhat elastic and is not readily broken by blows. The rotary driller would reverse the terms. The limestone is hard in that it resists the abrasive action of the bit, while the gypsum might be soft in that it is readily cut by the rotary bit. A SURVEY of literature reveals the scarcity of experimental evidence relating to work hardening and reannealing of silver.'-'" With the exception of the well-known X-ray investigation of silver and other metals by W. A. Wood? the effect of progressive cold working has not been studied. The determination of thermal stability of silver in the work-hardened state by means of isochronal or isothermal annealing has been confined apparently to very high reductions only. In the survey made, no study was encountered which endeavored to produce a complete picture of the changes in various properties due to cold working and subsequent reannealing. To fill these gaps and to assemble data that could be used for the determination of activation energies and of frequency coefficients of primary recrystallization, a systematic experimental approach, which was developed by one of the authors, has been applied to pure silver. Material and Processing The silver used was Handy and Harman fine silver, with a spectroscopic analysis at the testing stage of Cu, 0.0001 to 0.001 pct; Te, 0.0001; Pb, Si, Ca, Mg, and Mn, traces. The material was supplied in the form of a rod 0.406 in. diam and was converted into test samples according to the procedure condensed in Table I. It should be mentioned that air annealing was adopted to simulate industrial practice, though it was realized that annealing in a neutral gas or in a vacuum would be preferred. The usual precautions have been taken to eliminate any structural changes and property changes resulting from the storage of the samples prior to annealing or testing. Thus the wires were kept at the fully annealed stage, and the final wire drawing, which produced the desired degree of work hardening, was done just prior to the final annealing or testing. During the short waiting period, the samples were kept in a thermosflask filled with ice. Even with these precautions some strain-age-hardening or self-annealing could occur. To test such a possibility, wires of different reductions were prepared in the manner adopted and portions of them were immediately tested. The remaining portions were similiarly tested after different periods of storage, both at room and melting-ice temperature. Within experimental error, all samples obtained from a wire of a given percentage of reduction yielded identical values. This result qualified the material for further tests and interpretations, because it showed that either strain-age-hardening and self-annealing were absent, or that these effects fully balanced each other. The final annealing was carried out in an electric resistance furnace automatically controlled to within a 10°F. It was realized that the temperature fluctuations were greater than desired for this type of work. TO diminish the errors due to fluctuations of temperature, the hot junction of the thermocouple was placed as close to the samples as possible; the time of soaking was reduced to 15 min; and the number of samples annealed at different temperatures was increased. It will be seen from Table I that some tests were performed on the same material at rising temperature. These will be discussed elsewhere. Room temperature testing was limited to the determination of some of the mechanical properties that are known to be additive in a degree sufficient to be used for indirect study of the kinetics of the reannealing process, Tensile tests, carried out on a manually operated J. Camillon machine, accurate to within permitted the determination of the ultimate stress (U.S.1 and of the 2 in. elongation, (A,). I DESIRE to say that, owing to the number of papers which have been more or less crowded at this session of the Institute, and the fact that, as one of the Local Committee, I have the distinguished honor to feel somewhat like one of the hosts, I should not tax the patience of members at this late hour, but would have my paper read by title were it in any way possible to do this. But the task I have set myself this evening is to present to the eyes of the members of the Institute certain objects which have occupied more or less of my time during the last eighteen months or two years. The objects I allude to are some of the igneous rocks of this country, which, until quite recently, have been less understood than any others. It will be well known to some of the members that some of the cooled lavas of a previous age of our planet, when not directly coarsely crystalline and granular, were considered and spoken of as " natural glasses," or perfectly uncrystalline, vitreous, or hyaline masses of matter. Among the first results of the use of the microscope was the dispersion of this fallacy. Sir David Brewster, Mr. H. C. Sorby, and William Nichol (the discoverer of the celebrated calcite prism, which bears his name), had, with greater or less success, examined sections of various rocks and minerals, both by transmitted and reflected light, and also in the form of powder. But, until the genius of Vogelsang undertook the subject, these investigations had no permanent value, nor did they constitute an independent line of mineralogical and geological research. Since the close of his labors, by Vogelsang's premature and much-lamented death, the subject has been made one of renewed interest by his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Zirkel, as well as by Rosenbusch, Tschermak, and many others abroad, and at home by the commencement of a systematic study of the traps of Connecticut by Messrs. E. D. Dana and G. W. Hawes, of New Haven, and by the splendid set of described sections of the traps of the West which have been furnished by Zirkel to illustrate Clarence King's report. I had the honor of presenting a large number of thin sections of our traps at the Washington meeting, for the inspection of the members, with the aid of a table microscope belonging to the Smithsonian Institution. The method of mining the uranium orebody at Denison mine in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario is discussed. Details of the development of haulage-ways and rooms are giuen, as well as methods of ore haulage. The milling and beneficiation stages are noted briefly. Located in the Elliot Lake mining district of Canada, the Denison mine lies between Sudbury to the east and Sault Ste. Marie to the west, Fig. 1. This area is overlain by Huronian sediments filling a basin in the Keewatin basement complex. Subsequent folding of these sediments developed a synclinal structure, known locally as the Quirke Lake Trough, which forms the northern portion of the now famous big Z structure, the geological trademark of this region. Plunging to the west and extending nine miles from the granite outcropping in the north to the Keewatin lava contact to the south, the syncline has dips of 10" to 45" on the north limb and 10" to 20" on the south limb, Fig. 2. The Denison orebody, located on the north limb of the syncline, lies between 800 and 3000 ft below the surface. The main ore zone is within 50 ft of the Missisagi-Keewatin contact (see Fig. 3), and it varies in thickness from 6 to 32 ft. This ore zone has a composite dip of 19" to the south and is composed primarily of two pyritized conglomerate beds separated by a band of pebbly quartzite stratum. The upper conglomerate bed of the main zone varies from 2 to 15 ft in thickness, while the lower conglomerate varies from 2 to 12 ft. Over extended areas, mining is carried out over the entire section comprising the two conglomerate layers and intercalated quartzite; in other areas, the conglomerates are selectively mined, depending on the thickness of the quartz-ite. The ore zone contains approximately 6 pct sulfides and 80 pct silica. The predominant uranium-bear ing minerals are brannerite, uraninite, and an unidentified mineral (probably thucolite). Some of the uneconomic metallic minerals identified to date are pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. MINE LAYOUT Shafts: Underground exploration and development (Fig. 4) were performed through two shafts 1/2 mile apart. The No. 1 shaft, sunk to a depth of 1856 ft with the main station established at the 1600-ft ore level, is a 250-sq ft, 5-compartment shaft capable of handling 4500 tpd. Two 5x5-1/2-ft compartments serviced by a 12-ft diam double-drum hoist, are used for hoisting 190-cu-ft bottom-dump skips in balance. A 30-man cage, offset by a counterbalance, operates within a 5-1/2x11-1/2-ft compartment. The fifth compartment is used as a manway, pipe, and cable-way. This shaft is also provided with an intermediate pumping station used during the initial mining phase as well as loading-pocket and spill-pocket installations and pumping facilities. The 480-sq ft No. 2 shaft, located down-dip from No. 1 shaft, has a 2776-ft depth. Serving as the main hoisting shaft with a maximum capacity of 9000 tpd, it has eight compartments, four of which are used for hoisting ore in 10-ton capacity bottom-dump skips. These four compartments, measuring 5x6-ft in section, are serviced by two 12-ft diam double-drum semi-automatic hoists. A 50-man cage is operated in a 15x8-ft compartment, and it is counterbalanced by a 12-ton weight. Two compartments are used for ventilation, manway, electric cables, and pipes. A station was constructed at the 1325-ft horizon of the No. 2 shaft for relay pumping. The main sta-

VRD started producing pellets in 1969 with one 2-million-t straight grate plant. In the beginning of April 1973, the second unit came on stream with an additional capacity of 3 million t/a of pellets. In January 1977, the third unit started, bringing the annual capacity to 8 million t/a. In the coming year (1978-79), three more units, 3 million t each, are expected to begin production. CVRD's experience with different binders and additives is described. Over the years several kinds of pellets have been produced to satisfy market requirements. General quality information is given for each.
