The unit agreement for the Wertz Dome field, Wyoming, was approved by the Acting Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior on November 4, 1937, effective on December 1, 1937. The stated objectives of the agreement are to conserve and put to beneficial use all oil and gas produced; to make possible a uniform withdrawal of oil and gas in order to maintain equalized reservoir pressures; to provide for an orderly determination of the structural features of the productive horizons; and to permit the injection of gas for pressure maintenance. The purpose of this paper is to show by a discussion of the problems involved and the engineering practices employed by the unit operator, how well the objectives of the unit agreement have been accomplished in the development and production of oil and gas from the field. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT The Wertz Dome oil and gas field is located 88 miles southwest of Casper and 38 miles north and westerly from Rawlins, Wyoming. It is served by a state secondary oiled road connecting with U. S. Highway No. 220 at Lamont, a distance of 3 miles from the field. It has been a producing field for 27 years, first as an important producer of gas and more recently of oil. The Producers and Refiners Corp. completed Well No. 1, NE1/4SW1/4 sec. 7, T. 26 N., R. 89 W., the first productive well in the field, in September. 1921, in the Muddy sandstone of Upper Cretaceous age, at a depth of 3435 feet for an initial production of 42,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day. In 1922 pipe lines were laid to Casper, Wyoming, for supplying fuel to the Standard of Indiana refinery, 'the adjoining town of Mills. and the Producers and Refiners Corp. pump station No. 6 in Mills; and to Parco (now Sinclair), Wyoming, for supplying that refinery with fuel. The gasoline content of the gas was extracted in an absorption plant located near the town of Mills. No compressors were used as the line pressure was sufficiently high to flow the gas through the absorbers. As high as 30,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day were treated in the plant extracting 6000 gallons of gasoline. In September 1937, the pipe line was discontinued and the plant was dismantled at which time 61,000,000,000 cu. ft. of gas had been produced from the seven Muddy, Cloverly, and Sundance gas wells drilled in the field. Of this volume of gas 800,000,000 cu. ft. were produced from the Frontier formation, 34,200,000,000 cu. ft. from the Muddy sandstone, 24,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Cloverly, locally called Dakota, and 2,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Sundance formation. The pipe line was discontinued because of the near depletion of the gas reserves in Wertz and nearby fields, and hecause of the local field requirements demanding the retention of the remaining gas reserves. In December 1936, the Sinclair Wyoming Oil Co. completed Well No. 10, SE1/4NW1/4 sec. 7. T. 26 N., R. 89 W., at a depth of 5886 feet. as the first Tensleep sand producer with an intial of 1700 barrels of oil per day. The well was originally drilled only 14 feet into the sand and in August 1939 was deepened to a depth of 6161 feet, 289 feet in the sand, and the daily produe tion increased to 8350 barrels of oil. In February 1948 Well No. 22, SE1/4 SE1/4 sec. 1. T. 26 N., R. 90 W., was deepened from the Tensleep to the Basal Amsden sand and completed at a depth of 6635 feet for an intial of 600 barrels of oil per day in the Basal Amsden. In April 1948, Well No. 2. SW1/4 NE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N., R. 90 W.. was deepened from the Tensleep to the Madison limestone and was completed at a depth of 7193 feet for an intial of 1145 barrels of oil per day in the Madison. Well No. 26, SE1/4SE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N.. R. 90 W., was deepened from the Ten-sleep to the Cambrian and in October 1948 it was completed in the Cambrian for an intial of 277 barrels of oil per day. GEOLOGY AND PRODUCTIVE ACREAGE The surface is Steele shale of Upper Cretaceous age, covered in part by gravel beds. By the courtesy of Metropolitana Milanese (Milan Underground), roost of the delegates visited on April 12, 1991 the tunnel of "PORTA VENEZIA" STATION of MILANO RAILWAY LINK. The "PORTA VENEZIA" STATION will be the most important in the link and it will he also the largest underground project of the whole railway transport network in Lomhardy. The particular conditions of the soil and the collocation of site in the center of Milano have required new technologies and the technical solution applied to this job is called "Cellular Arch Method" by its designer Prof. P. Lunardi. Our sincere thanks go to Prof. P. Lunardi and Eng. E.M. Pizzarotti of Rocksoil, Milano who have kindly furnished us a technical description of this method. Eng. Pizzarotti was the guide during the visit and gave all the technical explanations to the delegates. THE "VENEZIA" STATION IN THE 2PB SECTION OF THE RAILWAY LINK The excavation of cavities in loose ground, exceeding a certain dimension and at shallow depth, is not feasible using traditional methods: in fact it is not possible to consolidate the ground around the cavity in such a way that homogeneity and resistance is sufficiently guaranteed.

The 1963 Lignite Symposium was held on the University of North Dakota campus, Grand Forks, N. Dak., April 30-May 1, 1963, under the cosponsorship of the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines. This symposium, the third in a series, had as a general objective the dissemination of information concerning advances in technology and utilization of solid fuels, with emphasis on lignitic coals. Approximately 150 representatives of industry, government, and educational institutions from 21 states and 3 Canadian provinces were present at the symposium. Those attending were welcomed by Marling J. Ankeny, Director of the Bureau of Mines, representing the Bureau, and Dean T. H. Clifford, Vice President of the University, representing the University.

The design of tailings containment structures relies on well-understood engineering methods being applied consistently. Unfortunately, not all facilities are designed or managed to the same level of competency. To standardize procedures, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC, 1998) prepared a “Guide to Tailings Management.” It recommended review of designs and an assessment of the risks associated with tailings impoundments be implemented during all phases of amine life. This paper describes how the quantitative risk assessment (QRA) process can be used to define risks associated with the design, construction and operation of a tailings management facility. And it discusses how, once the risk tolerability curves (RTC) are defined for a project, they can assist the risk management (RM) process.

Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well 'as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

By combining the skills of the physicist with those of a chemist, the identification of minerals has become an exact science and the presence of even minute traces of impurities and extraneous elements is readily revealed by spectrographic means, Granted that we can learn all there is to know about the composition of a substance and even about its physical propertied (which latter assumption is somewhat far-reaching) it still does not follow that we clearly understood its commercial designation or utility.

This preliminary bulletin was written as the first of a series of several on the significance of drafts in steam-boiler practice, the succeeding bulletins to be along the same lines but of a more advanced character. The conclusions arrived at are tentative, and are the result of a study of one of the many problems growing out of a general plan of the United States Government to increase the efficiency with which the coals of the country are being used. Greater efficiency requires better boiler and furnace design. The experimental study of drafts on which the conclusions presented in this bulletin are based formed part of the fuel-testing investigations that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and have been transferred to the Bureau of Mines. The experiments made seem to indicate that it is possible to double or treble the capacity of a plant without making any radical changes the furnaces and boilers. These increases require about double and treble the quantities of air to be put through the fuel beds and boilers. It also seems probable that rebafHing the boilers will often permit the capacity to be doubled or trebled, while still getting more steam than formerly per pound of coal for uses outside the boiler room. These experiments were undertaken with the object of clarifying ideas concerning the passage of air through fuel beds and boilers. Measured weights of air were passed through two beds of lead shot, series, one of which remained always the same and represented a boiler; the other being varied as to size of shot and depth of bed, and representing a fuel bed. Careful observations were made of the weight of air passing through the beds per minute. All data were plotted in many charts, so as to permit the study of them from several points of view. A number of laws were deduced bearing on the relative amounts of power required to force air through fuel beds of various thicknesses, composed of various sizes of coal, and through boilers of various lengths and areas of gas passages. An important part of the discussion relates to an increase in the capacity of boilers by increasing the amount of power applied to pressure and exhausting fans and thus forcing several times as much air through the fuel beds and boilers. may be possible, as a result of these investigations, to raise the rate of working the boiler heating surface to three or even four times its present value. Such an increase would undoubtedly mean new designs of grates, stokers, furnaces, and boilers, especially fitted for high rates of working. Fan equipments designed to supply three or four times as much air under several times the pressure would be provided with more efficient engines, thus giving an additional factor favoring high-capacity working. It must be borne in mind, as stated above, that the results are tentative. It will cost money to force gases at high speeds through fuel beds and boilers, and there will soon be pressing need of such quantitative data as will enable the largest possible part of the energy imparted by the fans to be advantageously utilized. The values shown therein and set forth below cover lands and equipment and do not include distribution and marketing facilities. The working capital necessary to meet pay rolls to purchase material and supplies and workmen's compensation insurance are likewise excluded.

The purpose of this study was to examine the problems of underground coal mining in the United States, and to develop recommendations for an integrated Research and Development Program aimed at resolving these problems. Specific objectives of the study were as follows: ? To identify the existing inadequacies that have adverse effect on Health, Safety, External Environment, and Productivity. ? To identify opportunities for technological advance s to correct these inadequacies. ? To develop an integrated Research and Development Program designed to accomplish the advances identified. Many of the recommended tasks are dearly long range; this is especially true of those for study of future mining systems. However, funding recommendations in this Report are presented for a 5 -year period, since the developments accomplished during this period will undoubtedly be a factor in the formulation of the follow on tasks. Where applicable, the recommended Research and :Development could include development and test of pilot model equipment.

The Government of Belize maintained strict control over spending in 1982 as a means of protecting its import-dependent economy against the effects of a general worldwide recession. The modest economic performance was not expected to differ substantially from the $152 million2 gross national product (GNP) estimated for 1981. Exports and reexports were expected to decline in 1982, partly as a result of the Mexican peso devaluation. Imports were also expected to decline slightly in 1982, but the overall trade deficit was projected some-what higher than the $44 million experienced in 1981. On September 21, 1982, Belize became an independent state. As a result, the new Government became eligible for assistance from international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Belize's independence from its former status as a colony of Great Britain was marred somewhat by the unsettled territorial dispute between Great Britain and Guatemala. Guatemala declared Belize was a part of Guatemala and. therefore. refused to recognize it as an independent state. Negotations between Great Britain and Guatemala continued without resolution.

A study was made of the instrumentation and technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy developed by Walsh of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (C.S.I.R.O.), Australia.The method was evaluated for the determination of silver in lead sulphide concentrate. The precision of the procedure developed is equal to that of the uncorrected fire assay method and the accuracy is greater.Brief mention is made of the use of this technique for the determination of silver and other elements in ores and concentrator products.INTRODUCTIONThe fire assay method, although accepted on a world-wide basis as the umpire method for the determination of silver in ores and concentrates, is freely recognized as yielding results which are lower than actual due to unavoidable losses.King (1934) investigated the influence of the cupelshape, size and material on silver losses during cupellation. Using 100 mg silver prills he recorded silver losses ranging between l. and 10 per cent under extreme conditions and averaging approximately 2 percent under conditions which might be considered normal. Guerin (1957) made a detailed study, under carefully controlled conditions in a furnace similar to that described by Esdaile (1952), of the effect of temperature on silver losses during cupellation. The two components of pillar design formula being used in South Africa are pillar strength and pillar load. While considerable effort has been directed to the determination of pillar strength, the other half of the safety factor equation, the load, has not received the same amount of attention. The load acting on pillars has always been calculated using the Tributary Area Theory (TAT). This paper summarises the recent studies on coal pillar loading using various numerical models. It concludes that although there are meaningful differences under certain circumstances, there is still a compelling argument to use the TAT in coal pillar design. To mitigate and control the combined sewer overflows from 17 outfalls in the City of Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design has revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km(7-miles) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each, and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. This paper discusses the latest development of this tunnel system.

The prevention of coal-mine explosions has been one of the chief purposes of the Bureau of Mines. In facti the first Federal appropriation relating to mining methods, in 1908, authorized the investigation of the causes of mine explosions and the possible methods of preventing them. When that investigation started the mining industry had not determined the real causes of a succession of terrible coal-mine explosions in various countries, culminating in the great disasters at CoulTièl'es, France, and Monongah, W. Va. Coal dust as an agent of widespread explosions had been under suspicion, and watering to allay the dust was recommended by some mining engineers but the watering of coal-mine dust was adopted in comparatively few mines of the United States and Great Britain, and had not been introduced widely in any country except Germany. Rock dusting, another method of preventing explosions of coal dust, was early tested with success by the Bureau of Mines in its fist gallery at Pittsburgh and, beginnig in 1911, at the experimental mine, Bruceton, Pa. Several of the fist publications i of the bureau suggested that rock dust be used in gaseous or dusty bituminous mines, and in 1915 Technical Paper 842 strongly recommended it. Since that time additional tests in the experimental mine have fully confied this :ft judgment.

Wire Bonding is the dominant IC interconnection process presently used in the semiconductor assembly industry (1). The flexibility, adaptability and cost of wire bonding will continue to keep it as the key process for the interconnection of integrated circuits to substrates. However, wire bonding still has certain technological hurdles to overcome if it is to continue following the semiconductor roadmap (2). Particular issues which need to be addressed include low overall tensile strength, low elastic modulus, low shear per unit area and mechanical loop stability of Gold based micro-alloys. The ability to produce ?Deformation Process Metal-Metal Matrix Composites? (DMMCs) is based upon the deformation nature of immissible metallic systems. For reference, the Gold (Au)-Molybdenum (Mo) phase diagram is shown in Figure 1 (3). By inspection of the diagram, Au has a very low solubility for Mo, while Mo has essentially no solubility for Au. This is the metallurgical analog of oil and water. In the Au-Mo case, this is particularly troublesome when producing precursor ingots of the alloy to be formed into wire products. In Table 1, the melting points and densities are shown for Au and Mo. As shown, the melting point of Mo is significantly higher than Au, and is very close to the boiling point of Au (2856°C). However, Au?s density is higher than that of Mo. As such, conventional casting techniques are not suitable, since solid Mo would float off the surface of an Au melt thus depleting the matrix of its alloy addition. In this work, two-phase composite wires were produced by deformation processing to develop an interconnection wire with elevated tensile strength, modulus and shear to those commonly available in the market (4). This technology has been used previously in the production of high strength electrical conductors particularly for high field pulsed magnets (5).

Information technology (IT) initiatives in the past have tended to be sold on their ability to maximize resource output and return on capital by allowing assets to be used more effectively and efficiently. Many IT projects fail, not delivering return on their investment. This is known in the IT industry as the “productivity paradox,” where increasing investments in IT do not result in comparable increases in productivity. Experiences and studies of most business sectors reveal that this paradox is rooted in the false assumption that more IT spending automatically results in financial benefit, whereas the benefits are in how effectively IT is used. Most business sectors have accepted that re-engineering of processes is required to gain the full benefits promised of IT. A mining operation has organizational processes similar to most business sectors, but unique operational processes. The lessons of changing business practice in more common business processes, such as inventory control and customer-supplier relationships, can be adequately transposed into a mine setting. The unique operational processes in mines, in turn, require unique redesign efforts. Several enabling information technology opportunities have recently become available, such as more integrated mine production management systems and tactical manager training simulators. This paper reviews some of the latest IT products and outlines the processes and kinds of change that will be required in order to benefit from these new investment options.

"Mining is an energy and water intensive activity. Increasing energy efficiency and reducing water consumption are two of the key requirements in moving toward a more sustainable mining industry. Water reduction, reuse and recycle options are reviewed, identifying cases where these options have been implemented. Then a novel mine water network design method is described, which analyzes a mine/mill water system in order to identify areas where water requirements and water system energy requirements can be reduced. First, a site water balance is determined and major water consumers and sources are specified. Next, multiple possible combinations of supplying water to mine and mill consumers are compared. Finally, low energy and water combinations are identified.INTRODUCTIONMining consumes vast quantities of energy: The whole mining and metals sector consumes over 12% of the world’s energy (DOE, 2009). Mining also requires large quantities of water, although mining water consumption is a relatively small portion of the overall world water use. Even in relatively dry, mining-intensive countries like Australia and South Africa, mine water consumption is only 2-3% of national water demand (Brown, 2003). However, at the local level, when mining takes place in areas where water is scarce, mine water consumption can severely impact local supplies. In addition, acid rock drainage, leaks from waste impoundments, or direct disposal of tailing into waterways can contaminate surface and groundwater (MMSD, 2002). Mine water systems can be large energy consumers, but better mine water systems can reduce both water and energy consumption. Improving water system design and practice are key strategic requirements in moving toward a more sustainable mining industry.This paper addresses conventional base-metal or precious-metal mine sites, which consist of an underground or open pit mine and a mineral processing plant, or mill. Ore is extracted and processed through the plant to produce a saleable product. Tailing, or waste material, is then deposited in a tailing storage facility (TSF). Any rock removed from the mine with no economic value, or waste rock, is stored without being processed."
