"A computational study of the effect of thermocapillary convection on melting of a droplet under the influence of an incident uniform heat flux is presented. The computations are based on an iterative, finite-volume numerical procedure using primitive dependent variables, whereby the time-dependent continuity, momentum and energy equations in the spherical coordinate system are solved. During the early periods of the melting process, conduction mode of heat transfer is dominant. As the thermocapillary convection is strengthened due to the growth of the melt zone, melting on the side of the droplet is observed to be much faster in comparison to the conduction-only case. Due to the skewedness of the temperature field, a new recirculating vortex is created which promotes melting within the droplet. The effects of the change in the sign of the surface-tension temperature coefficient on the melting pattern are also investigated.1. IntroductionMelting and solidification of materials are important processes which are encountered in nature and numerous industrial applications. Due to the recent upsurge of interest in such processes as spray casting, space radiators, rapid solidification, purification of materials, containerless processing, etc., there is a need to analyze the transport phenomena of melting and solidification in spherical configurations. Specifically, the effect of thermocapillary convection on the melting of metallic droplets has not been addressed at all. Only a few authors have studied the transport phenomena without phase change in spherical droplets. Oliver and DeWitt [l] worked out a series solution for the thermal and surface-tension-driven flow fields for a droplet experiencing an irradiant energy flux in the microgravity environment. Kudo et al. [2] solved the coupled momentum and energy equations numerically for the same problem without dropping the convective terms. Due to the nonexistence of any previous work on transport phenomena during the thermocapillary-assisted melting of metal droplets, this study was initiated to elucidate the features of the phenomenon."

Adding CaO into the vanadium extraction converter is an effective way to decrease the dephosphorization burden in subsequent steelmaking process. The crystallisation process of spinel is one of the most decisive factors in the subsequent extraction. The theoretical calculation results show that the temperature of the peak total crystallization rate will decrease 5K with basicity increasing 0.1. The relation between cooling conditions and grain size of spinels is also discussed. It is found that low cooling rate and high basicity benefit spinel crystal growth. And the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics results indicated that the restriction factors of spinel growth is that solid crystals accept new components from liquid-solid interfacial. While the sample was cooled down to 1250 (1523K) at cooling rate of 5K/min, the crystal growth is consistent with Ostwald coarsening grew up law, and controlled by diffusion of particle.

Thiourea solutions can be used as leach liquors to treat gold ores or slimes. It is also efficient to elute resins or strip solvents that were loaded in cyanides solutions. The hydrogen pressure reduction is a practical step to recover gold and silver from leach solutions, and strips and eluates without any destruction of thiourea. It is a critical point because these processes have to consider the recycling of the liquors to be irore economical. The effect of temperature, pressure, acidity, compotation of the solution and the nature of catalysts on pressure reduction by hydrogen were investigated. An electranetallurgical study was? carried out to investigate the mechanism. The composition of the products was studied by different analytical methods. The process shows a good selectivity to precipitate gold and silver in a thiourea solution containing iron and copper. Gold and silver concentrations can be decreased to 0.2 ppm and 0.1 ppm at respectively 70 KPa H2 and 28°C. No decomposition of thiourea was evident during the tests. Metals such as nickel powder or platinum activate the reaction and improve the reduction.

"Nippon Mining & Metals started a new copper anode slime treatment plant that processes slimes in a chloride media. The basic plan of the process was proposed by Mr. James E. Hoffmann and Nippon Mining & Metals modified and advanced to produce precious metals in acceptable qualities for the company. The process has a wet chlorination stage of decopperized slimes, a solvent extraction and a reduction stages of gold, a silver chloride reduction stage and separative reduction stage of its gold extraction raffinate. The new plant of this process started in 1997 and has been operated in good condition.IntroductionThe old anode slime treatment plant of Nippon Mining & Metals, located in it's Hitachi Refinery, processed anode slimes through a combination of pyrometarllurgical processing and electrorefining. There was a need to plan a future of the plant because the maintenance cost increased year by year and a new selenium registration was going to be applied to the plant. Some plans were discussed and the result was that the process proposed by Mr. Hoffmann was superior among them.Nippon Mining & Metals started 'to examine the process and the experimental result showed that the process had an ability to be its new process but further research should be necessary to produce precious metals in acceptable qualities. The final process flow has some modified and additional stages to be suitable for its requirement. Silver processing stage is quite changed. Gold extraction stage has a new step to polish gold loading DBC. Gold extraction raffinate treatment stage is advanced to be able to recover precious metals, selenium and tellurium, separately. Aeration under atmospheric pressure is employed in decopperizing stage.The basic design of the new plant started in 1995 and finished in 1997. The construction of the new plant began in April 1997 and finished in October. The plant has been operating well after the four months test operation."

Noranda Metallurgy is presently completing construction of the new Noranda Converter (NCV) at its Home Smelter in Rouyn-Noranda. This capital investment of CDN$56M is the continuation of the Emissions and SO2 Reduction Program that was initiated in the late 1980s with the acid plant for Reactor off-gas treatment. The Patented Noranda Converter was developed and pilot tested at the Home Smelter in the early 1990s. The project will replace the Peirce-Smith Converters and enable sulphur fixation to be 'increased from 70% to over 90% by 2002 with an accompanying reduction of dust emissions to the atmosphere. The construction site is an extension of the present Noranda Reactor area. A number of existing facilities including the acid plant and process air supply were used to minimize the capital cost of the project. This paper provides a brief history of the Noranda converting process, the Home Smelter Emissions and SO2 Reduction Program, ,project implementation and construction, a description of the different facilities, and preparation of human resources for start-up.

The environmental concern is creating pressure for the substitution of high energy consumption materials for natural and sustainable ones. Compared to synthetic fibers, natural fibers have shown advantages in technical aspects such as flexibility and toughness. So there is a growing worldwide interest in the use of these fibers. Fique fiber extracted from fique plant, presents some significant characteristic, but until now only few studies on fique fiber were performed. This work aims to make the analysis of the tensile strength of polyester composites reinforced with fique fibers. The fibers were incorporated into the polyester matrix with volume fraction from 0 to 30%. After fracture the specimens were analyzed by a SEM (scanning electron microscope).

Process mineralogy has not been given adequate attention in years past, because geologists have not been sufficiently interested in applying mineralogical techniques to industrial processes, and most process engineers are not adequately trained to use them. Although some individuals and institutions have made efforts to improve the situation, it is only in the last few years that the significance of applying the methods of mineralogy to a wide variety of industrial processes has been fully appreciated. Presently, the formation and organization of several groups devoted to applied mineralogy have created a more amenable climate for the development of process mineralogy. As a result, the presentation, discussion, and publication of the results and case histories of process mineralogy have become fairly common. Short courses affording hands-on experience with applied techniques are now available to the many geologists and process engineers engaged in industrial mineralogical processes. The future role of the process mineralogist is viewed as an expanded one, which will increase in value.

"Phase transitions of the potential hydrogen storage compound, ammonia borane (NH3.BH3), was investigated using Raman spectroscopy and a diamond anvil cell at high pressures up to 9.5 GPa and low temperatures down to 90K. At room temperature, ammonia borane has three phase transitions in this pressure range. Upon cooling, four new phases were discovered through changes in characteristic Raman spectra. This result provides information about the stability of new bonding characteristics of this potential hydrogen storage material at low temperature and high pressure region.IntroductionDevelopment of hydrogen technology requires the safe, efficient and environmental friendly materials for hydrogen storage and hydrides have attracted much attention as hydrogen storage media. Among chemical hydrides, ammonia borane (BH3NH3) stands out due to its high gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen density ' "". Despite high hydrogen content, this compound is very stable. It releases hydrogen in several steps by thermal decomposition in the temperature range of 100°C to 500°C. Direct thermal decomposition also causes toxic borazine emission. Recent research interests on ammonia borane include destabilizing this compound to lower the dehydrogenation temperature with an enhanced hydrogen release rate using different techniques, e.g. the nanoscaffolds'', ionic liquids"" and acid'"" or transition metal catalysts' ""'. As a molecule of ammonia borane consists of protonic (NH) and hydritic (BH) hydrogens bonded by the polarized dative bond, thermal or catalyzed decomposition requires breaking of N-H and B-H bonding. Still now, the detailed information about the bonding characteristics of ammonia borane is not sufficient to understand details about its phases and structures. The development of methods to enhance hydrogen discharge rate from ammonia borane requires a detailed study about the structural and dynamical properties that control the stability and the intermolecular interactions of this material. This study is motivated to investigate the stability of the existing phases and also to explore the existence of any new phases at different temperatures and pressures which may have enhanced hydrogen release and uptake properties."

Until 1970, the Caletones Smelter of CODELCO-CHILE, División El Teniente, operated under the conventional pyrometallurgical process used by most of copper smelters. The annual copper production varied around 165.000 tons. The failure in the commissioning of the "oxygen smelting" technology in Peirce- Smith converters (1970-1972), forced further introduction of transcendental changes in the Caletones smelter operating scheme. Implemented technological innovations were based on wide studies and research works performed by División El Teniente. This paper presents a summary of technological modifications introduced, their impact on production and energetic performances, and short and medium terms improvement plans.

"During 1987, the feasibility of modernising the ER&S smelter at Port Kembla, NSW, Australia was studied. The selection of appropriate technologies to carry the smelter into the 21st century considered issues such as capital cost, existing infrastructure, feed mix, capacity, product quality, flexibility and potential for further development. Both hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical process schemes were considered. Some novel combinations were assessed but ultimately rejected. Final technology selections included proven smelting and anode furnace processes, pyrometallurgical slag cleaning and modifications to existing equipment. This process scheme balanced risk against development potential within the constraints imposed by the existing plant.BackgroundThe Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia (ER&S) has operated a custom copper smelter at Port Kembla since 1908. Existing technology includes a sinter plant/blast furnace, three small Peirce Smith converters, two reverberatory anode furnaces and a conventional tankhouse. These process units were all installed prior to 1960 and have proven to be flexible enough to process the wide variety of domestic feed materials purchased by ER&S.However, by the early 1980s, threats to domestic concentrate supplies highlighted the need for major changes to reduce operating costs to world competitive levels. Various studies in the ensuing years failed to identify an economically attractive solution. Furthermore, pressures were increasing to improve the environmental performance of the smelter.During 1986 the options for redevelopment were again considered and by the end of 1987 technologies for the retrofit had been selected and a full feasibility study was completed."

The thermodynamic of nickel production from laterite ore and from sulfide concentrate can be analyzed using PO2 - PS2 diagram of the Ni-Fe-S-0-SiO2 system. The procedure of the diagram computation is suggested and the diagrams for various temperature and Fe/Ni ratio are calculated. Three-suffix Margules equations are used for the calculation of the thermodynamic properties of three solutions: liquid matte, liquid slag and solid Fe-Ni alloy. The diagrams are used for the considerations about direct one-stage metallic nickel production.
