Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.

During the summers of 1992 and 1993, blasting operations were carried out to effect the crossing of two of Canada's better known game rivers, the Nipigon and Winnipeg, in connection with the completion of a third natural gas utility across north-western Ontario. The Nipigon River, crossed in 1992, involved a single fast-flowing channel while the Winnipeg River, crossed in 1993, involved three separate channels.

Computer software has been developed which uses fast Fourier Transform (FFT) techniques to analyze the frequency spectrum associated with peaks in ground vibration time histories. The procedure consists of filtering the FFT of a time history into individual frequency components.

This paper reviews the state of the art of precision explosive demolition particularly as it pertains to steel bridges. The two key factors affecting the acceptance of this type of demolition/are discussed as well as the physics and performance of the key explosive tool, the linear shaped charge. Blasting has been completed when the lawyer calls to say that a landowner has filed a suit alleging damages to the roof of his home. Mitigation talks fail to produce an adequate resolution and the case goes to court. The blaster has pictures of the area made after the blasting was done showing the good condition of the roof. However the judge fails to allow the photographs to be entered as evidence and the homeowner wins the case.

DMCBLAST_3D is a three-dimensional extension of the proven two-dimensional rock blast modeling code, DMCBLAST. DMCBLAST has been under development since 1987 and has successfully predicted the physics, mechanisms and results of a number of different types of rock blasting including, coal mine bench blasting, mineral mine choke blasting and underground stope blasting. Substantial effort has gone into the qualification and verification of DMCBLAST by comparing computer code predictions with real blasts in the field. Comparison with field data has also provided significant guidance to the development of the code.
