In this paper it is recommended that pyrite is to be separated as froth from arsenopyrite by selective depression of arsenopyrite in strong alkaline medium (1), by oxidation with chlorinated lime (II), by co-use of chlorinated lime with sodium carbonate (III), and by modification with `L' reagent (know-how) without filtering to get rid of residual copper ions after Cu activation (IV). The corresponding principles of these (new) effective methods were briefly discussed. The artificial mixture (1:1) of pyrite and arsenopyrite could be successfully separated, and concentrates of pyrite containing 2.12 per cent (I), 7.00 per cent (II), 2.60 per cent (III) and 3.16 per cent (IV) arsenic with recovery of 90.9 per cent (1), 89.5 per cent (II), 89.0 per cent (III) and 81.4 per cent (IV) respectively can be obtained by only one flotation. Some effective precautions were suggested to improve the separation of arsenopyrite and pyrite (or other sulphides) by flotation.

The Fortescue Metals Group story began in 2003 with a vision to establish an infrastructure project that would connect the stranded iron ore deposits of the Pilbara region of Western Australia with the steel mills of Asia. Following exploration successes in the Chichester Ranges using their new exploration model, Fortescue established significant iron ore resources at Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek during 2004 and 2005. By May 2006 the definitive feasibility study for mine, rail and port was completed, many of the key government approvals had been obtained, product development and market acceptance were complete and 1.07 Bt of total proved plus probable iron ore reserves were defined to support a 20 year mine life from the Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek deposits. Project construction commenced in September 2006 following a successful $3.2 billion capital raising. By April 2008, the mine and processing plant at Cloudbreak were completed along with the Herb Elliott port facility at Port Hedland and 256 km of heavy haul railroad linking the mine with the port. Mining of overburden commenced at Cloudbreak in late 2007 and by 15 May 2008 the first shipment of iron ore had departed for China. In the first 12 months of operation total shipments amounted to 24.6 M wet metric tonnes with weighted mean composition of 58.9 per cent Fe (64.4 per cent Fe calcined), 4.3 per cent SiO2, 2.0 per cent Al2O3 and 0.047 per cent P. Exactly 3.5 years between the Cloudbreak discovery hole and commercial production. The project success depended on many technical breakthroughs including a new exploration model, application of the surface miner as the main mining production unit, design of a new marketable fines product called æRocket FinesÆ, a highly efficient ædesandÆ flow sheet for upgrading of 2.4 per cent alumina run-of-mine to 1.9 per cent alumina Rocket Fines, 40 t axle loads for the heavy haul railway and a high capacity-highly automated port facility.

The paper discusses the state of the progress reached in the development of the diamond wire tool for cutting hard rocks. To the advances of this relatively new technology a substantial contribution has been provided by the research being carried out at the University of Cagliari on samples of granite rocks from different Sardinian stone quarries. On the basis of field experiments and laboratory test data, the mechanism of diamond wire cutting has been assessed. In particular the influence of the rock features and operational variables on tool performance (cutting rate and bead wear) has been Elucidated.

The Western Desert of Egypt is a part of the arid Great Sahara of Africa which extends from the Nile Valley in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is covered by a sedimentary sequence of Mezozoic and Teriary rocks. Recently this part of the country (about 65% of its surface area) has attracted an increasing attention in the plan of finding new agricultural and industrial communities outside the crowded Nile Valley. The plan aims to reduce the high population density in the narrow Nile Valley and to cover a considerable part of the increasing food demands in the country of Egypt. Accordingly, the groundwater exploration work in the Western Desert has been remarkably increased in the last decade, however it is still limited compared with the vast area of the Desert. The present work is a part of the groundwater exploration in the 6th October City, a new community located at 40kms west of Cairo. The rock exposures belong to a sedimentary stratigraphic section starting from the Cretaceous in the east to the Pliocene in the west. The Cretaceous outcrops due east are attributed to an almost N-S uplift and forms a thick massive limestone plateau which separates the present area from the Nile Valley. The Teriary section in the west have alternations of different porous formations such as the sands and sandstones which may acquire a good potentiality of groundwater resources. The previous groundwater exploration work included combined geological and geophysical investigations followed by exploration drilling. Although the area lies directly to the west of the Nile Valley, the discovered groundwater is saline and located at deeper reserviores compared with the groundwater in the Nile Valley. This groundwater was described as marine fossile water by the oil companies working in the Western Desert. From the geological point of view, it is believed that the Cretacious massive limestone plateau, in the east, roots to a depth which far exceeds the groundwater levels in the Nile Valley and acts as an impervious barrier between the aquifers in the Nile Valley and the area under investigations.

For the development of BHP's Gregory open cut coal mine in Central Queensland a mini computer was successfully used to assist staff in the evaluation of the deposit and the planning of the mine. The Gregory deposit is essentially a single mineable seam deposit, however the systems developed may be applied to other coal deposits including multi seam occurences. The first phase of the Gregory computer evaluation and planning project involved the establishment of a borehole data base for the storage, retrieval and analysis of both strata and quality data. During the second phase a numeric block model of the coal deposit was created. Using this model reserve calculations were carried out by specifying the area with the aid of a digitizing tablet. The third phase involved the develop- ment of systems to simulate the dragline stripping operations including the rehandle percentage calculation, a dragline production schedule showing coal quantity and quality exposed, and a combined multi dragline operation schedule that can produce figures and graphs for up to 20 variables. A derivative of the operating plan was a programme that gave productioh cost estimates

Arrow Energy NL has been operating a number of coal seam gas wells in the Darling Downs region of Queensland. At the time of writing this paper, the region is enduring an extended drought period. The local aquifers are depleting and have not been significantly recharged in over a decade. The local communities (both rural and townships) are struggling to obtain water. Currently, coal seam gas (CSG) operators (under licence) draw water from the coal seams as part of the gas production process and the majority of operators choose to evaporate this water, as it is characteristically brackish to saline in quality and as such must be contained. Although the water produced from one CSG operator is not sufficient to drought-proof the greater area of the Darling Downs, there is potential to supply smaller local areas and contribute to the sustainability of these communities. This paper outlines the work completed by Arrow and its local community partners on the Darling Downs to date, and discusses the application of the produced formation water for:stock watering in feedlots, as a feedstock for coal washing, as a potable water supply for Dalby, as an agricultural water supply for cotton farming, and use as a medium for growing salt-water fin fish.

The benefits of applying mobile primary crushing and belt conveying systems are analysed. The impacts of applying such systems to different steps of the mine process are discussed, including mine development and planning. Application examples are used for demonstrating further possibilities to apply mobile primary crushing and belt conveying systems in mining projects successfully.

There are serious problems in forecast- ing accurately and achieving this goal depends on good quality information, correct assumpt- ions and sound analysis. planner. The forecaster must focus attention on a number of key areas of interest. These areas include major economic trends and changing GNP structure, consumption time series, end-use consumption patterns and substitution potential, accurately updating data bases (up to 5 years ahead), random factor estimation and examination of both long term and secondary mine potential. While metal price forecasting has suffered due to recent uncertainties, with increased importance on planning tools and cost analyses, it is still a necessary function. Forecasting is subject to the real world and the metal industry is made up of imperfect markets in a dynamic state. The real world provides the challenge to improve the accuracy of forecasting.

Universities have had a long history in the education of geology graduates, Analysis of this history reveals a record of success, as judged on a world basis. However there have been significant changes in the last 20 years that have impacted on the ability of universities to continue to provide their traditional style of geology education. These changes have increased in the last 10 years. In the teaching side, there has been a change in expectations. Additionally the increasing workload decreases the value of each academic to perform the tasks needed by the new education. In the area of research, the funds provided have continued to decline, in both real and absolute terms, and it is now necessary for universities to seek out funds to pay for their postgraduate research. Additionally, the universities have slipped into the error of what cahn only be termed "academic incest", and research student mobility has decreased to an undesirable level, stifling initiative and new ideas in a number of cases, The only solution is for Government monies to be "directed" - ie that the postgraduate student must leave his or her original university in order to receifve the research stipend/scholarship. On the government front, the government and its agencies have not adequately analysed and recognised the need for the redirection of education and research funds into the needy areas of science and technology, especially those that related to the minerals area.

An outburst is the spontaneous ejection of pulverized coal and gas from the working face in an underground mine. It is caused by overstressing the rock, due predominantly to the influence of geological structures on in situ stresses, stress concentration from the excavation and overburden load on mine openings, and large volumes of gas sorbed in the rock. The spontaneous release of high pressure gas creates intense shock waves which may cause damage to the mine ven- tilation system and the pulverized rock/coal ejected may cause injury or death to miners. The gases emitted pollute the mine air and may also result in death to miners.

The basic aim of mine planning is to design mine layouts and schedules that achieve optimisation of operations, minimum cost and maximum resource recovery. Successful accomplishment of this aim is facilitated by timely and comprehensive rehabilitation planning commencing at the pre-feasibility stage and continuing until the end of mining. Incorporation of a final landfomt design for waste rock dumps in a mine plan requires a prediction of surface stability, which may be achieved through erosion modelling. Erosion prediction models can be placed in two broad categories: soil loss prediction models eg USLE and CREAMS, and geomorphic models such as SIBERIA. A waste rock dump landform design based on selected slope form and grade and drainage systems should be developed as part of planning. A digital terrain model (DTM) of the landfonn should then be produced which can be modelled for long-term erosional stability using pre-determined parameter values. If acceptable standards of stability are not achieved, the landform should be redesigned and remodelled until the desired result is obtained. The planning process incorporating models requires knowledge of spoil or waste rock properties and model parameter values. This information is site specific and can be obtained from drill cores or costeans at the pre-mining stage and from spoil or waste rock during the mining stage. Realistic model parameter values are critical in post-mining landfonn design and can be obtained by several methods, including rainfall simulation, monitoring, geochemical analyses and grain size analysis.

The Ardlethan tin concentrator had dete riorated considerably in metallurgical per- formance, maintenance and plant availability. This problem was compounded by low tin prices and International Tin Council quotas. Mid- 1976 figures were: throughput - 1300 tonnes per day, availability 83% and metal recovery 537. Major problems existed throughout the circuit from crushing to tailings disposal and with morale, staffing, and housekeeping. With the lifting of the quotas in June 1976, management provided funds to implement a major rehabilitation programme and some fifteen major projects, at a cost of about $1.3 million have been completed to date. The change in performance has been dram- atic, and end of 1977 performance figures are: throughput - 1700 tonnes per day, availability 90% and metal recovery 65%.

The Prospect to Pipehead Tunnel is a component of the Sydney Water Board's multi-million dollar Drinking Water Quality Program to improve the quality of Sydney's potable water supply to meet revised national health guidelines. The tunnel project involves the construction of seven kilometres of 3.9 metre diameter machine bored tunnel which is to be lined with a three-metre diameter steel liner. The paper describes the fully integrated planning and design approach and management technique used to enable this major project to proceed to meet the requirements of a tight construction program.

The ever increasing demand for metals and minerals is putting significant pressure on current mining companies to find more ore. As these companies explore and mine, the future appears to be to go deeper and deeper underground. With depth, however, comes ever increasing costs as infrastructure such as hoisting, ventilation, the movement of workers and materials increase in size and scope. Further, the actual rock mass becomes prone to destruction through rock bursts and the heat generated becomes a major issue resulting in extreme expenditures in cooling plants and some of the biggest air movers in the world. All these issues result in dramatic changes in both capital and operating costs, subsequently making cut-off grades rise. As this trend continues there is an economic limit to how deep one can go, resulting therefore in a severe shortage of accessible ore deposits to mine. This paper discusses the need for larger marine robotics technology and presents the state-of-the-art in current research in underwater tele-autonomy, specifically the development of high bandwidth optical communication networks critical to any future activities (mining, construction, etc) underwater. Testwork carried out in the cooling water circuit at the Yabulu treatment plant of the Greenvale Joint Venturers (Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. and Freeport Queensland Nickel Incorporated) since 1980 has resulted in significant improvements to both fouling and corrosion control. At the same time corrosion inhibitor costs have been reduced.Acrylate-type silt dispersants were identified as the most effective means of sediment control in the circuit. An increase in the cathodic component of the corrosion inhibitor coupled with a relatively minor adjustment to water pH has yielded a two to three fold reduction in corrosion rate. It has been established that these lower corrosion rates can be sustained in the face of a 20% reduction in corrosion inhibitor addition rate. Further improvements are indicated with a change of raw water algicide.

The original bulk air cooling system at this particular mine made use of two water chilling refrigeration machines to produce peak cooling of approximately 12 MWR with a downcast air temperature of about 7°C; however, as the shaft is not used for transporting personnel, the opportunity existed to supply more cooling to the mine by lowering the downcast air temperature. An ice storage facility has been constructed and provides a range of opportunities in operating the system: colder air temperature sent to the shaft, enabled by using near-zero degree water produced by melting ice to cool the air; electricity time-of-use management, by shifting electricity usage out of peak tariff periods; and increased peak cooling capacity, by melting ice while chilling water. Ice is created in the storage facility at night while the ambient air temperature is low and then melted to produce cold water when required by the cooling process. An ice dam was constructed and serpentine stainless steel coils installed where the ice is produced; one of the refrigeration machines was converted to chill a glycol solution to subzero temperatures to create the ice on the coils; a plate heat exchanger was installed to allow the glycol chiller to act as a water chiller as well; and a third spray stage was added to the bulk air cooler to utilise the near-zero water. This paper describes the thermodynamic design, construction and performance assessment of the new system, which is unique, novel and represents the state-of-the-art of this type of cooling system and energy management.CITATION:Branch, A R, Wilson, R W and Pooe, T S, 2015. The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. Two characteristics of the modern mining industry are that there is a skill shortage and that young professional people rise rapidly into highly responsible supervisory positions. With this responsibility comes the burden of identifying and managing health and safety risks. Without the benefit of a comprehensive health and safety training program, these young professionals may be putting both themselves and those under their supervision at risk. The Moura Mine explosions and the asbestos health disaster should not be just artifacts of history, but highly valued lessons that impress the need for comprehensive health and safety risk management strategies on young professionals. From the perspective of the former secretary of the Committee to implement the findings of the Moura (Disaster) Inquiry and as the former coordinator of the Coal Workers Health Scheme, key issues in occupational health and safety management systems are explored.
