In the mining industry, a lack of inquisitiveness may lead to a blissful ignorance but it certainly will not increase efficiencies. While one may claim necessity is the mother of invention, questioning and analyzing how methods and systems can be improved is the catalyst to discovering necessities. Understandably, when working in the middle of Canada?s oil sands, where trucks operate around the clock every day of the year, it is nearly impossible to pull the nose from the grindstone long enough to provide thorough analysis. But, fortunately, some manufacturers/inventors have assisted by examining the process and the ensuing headaches within this application.

The use of small quantities of polyacrylic acid (PAA) was found to significantly improve the flotation of fine-sized hematite particles at pH 4.1 and 0.001 M NaCl with sodium dodecykulfonate (SDS). Low polymer dosages before collector addition aid flotation by forming flocs of primary particles, but excess polymer results in low flotation yields due to surface saturation by the hydrophilic polymer. Contact angles, measured on a hematite disk, substantiate the hydrophilic nature of an adsorbed polymer film. Pre-adsorbed PAA reduces the amount of SDS adsorbed on the hematite particles, but the flotation of hematite flocs occurs, even at reduced amounts of adsorbed SDS, and is not depressed until PAA dosages in excess of the saturation value are used. Separation of a hematite-quartz mixture can be achieved by SDS flotation of PAA,-flocculated hematite. Maximum selectivity results with the addition of small quantities of PAA, while excess polymer is detrimental to the recovery of hematite. Consecutive flotation states on a single feed yield a higher grade hematite product at some expense to the overall recovery.

In the magnetite iron ore pelletization process, oxidation of magnetite followed by sintering of the oxidized magnetite (hematite) is desirable. Optimum preheating time & temperature and roasting time & temperature is required to get the desired properties of the pellets with magnetite, hematite, and hematite–magnetite blend. In order to utilize the magnetite resources in a current induration furnace, which is designed for hematite resources, detailed pelletization studies have been carried out to optimize the firing cycle for magnetite concentrate as well as magnetite with hematite concentrate. Under optimum conditions, such as preheating temperature 1000–1150 °C, preheating time 10 min, roasting temperature 1250 °C and roasting time 7.5 min, the cold compression strength (CCS) of magnetite roasted pellets was 325 kg/p, and this was due to recrystallization of secondary hematite particles, and development of the strong slag bond between primary and secondary hematite particles. The strength of hematite concentrate pellets was 260 kg/p. From laboratory studies, it was found that without disturbing the induration furnace firing cycle, which is designed for hematite ore ~5%, magnetite concentrate can be used along with hematite concentrate in pellet blend and the strength of the pellets was 270 kg/p. As the magnetite concentrate increases in the blend beyond 5%, the preheating zone residence time should be increased or a supply of extra oxygen is required. Laboratory as well as plant investigation has shown that the addition of magnetite to the hematite mix blend improved the strength of the pellets compared to hematite pellet alone.

Alkaline solution rinsing for decommissioning of an acid-leached residue was evaluated by column experiments, neutralization tests and solid characterization by XRD and SEM. It was found that consumption of a strong alkali during residue neutralization was much greater than that required to neutralize the soluble acidity. The excess alkalinity was consumed by solid-phase conversions unnecessary for the success of decommissioning. Alkaline rinsing did not reduce the time requirement for decommissioning when compared with plain water rinsing. Since no benefit is gained to compensate for the additional costs associated with excess alkali consumption, we conclude that strong alkaline solution rinsing is in fact inferior to simple water rinsing.

The key to concentrator automation is practical means for obtaining continuous assay data from concentrator streams. The technique most successfully used is x-ray fluorescence analysis. The practical reality of on-stream x-ray analysis has been achieved through effort over the past twenty years, marked by an occasional breakthrough, but more typically a step-by-step development to which many individuals and organizations have contributed. The net result of this progress is the present capability to install on-stream x-ray analyzer systems on a turn-key basis. It is now possible to provide all components of an x-ray analysis system as a completely engineered unit which can be put into immediate use, minimizing needs for specialized application know- ledge to benefit from continuous assaying in process control. The economic factors which influence the choice of system and limitations of the x-ray fluorescence technique for slurry analysis are reviewed.

The operation of large opencast mines in a densely populated area in the centre of Europe involves an inevitable interference in the region. Thus, this is only possible with general acceptance by the regional stakeholders. In order to achieve this general acceptance, it is necessary to develop sound common concepts and to engage in a continuous dialogue with the stakeholders. The aim is to create seminal structures of relevance to the regional economy, taking into account the interests of the various stakeholders like e.g. authorities, local governments, the regional public, and churches. The recultivation of the mined-out areas represents the offset for the mining activities. RWE Power has reached high acceptance of its recultivation. This high acceptance is illustrated by various examples, from biotopes to high-yield agriculture and recreational areas. Thus, recultivation covers all the elements of sustainable development from social compatibility to ecological as well as economic aspects. This is only achievable through an intensive stakeholder dialogue in the region: The communities concerned are intensively involved in the planning and approval process for the new landscape. As far as social compatibility - one of the aspects of sustainable development - is concerned, the necessary resettlement of whole villages is one of the principal challenges. Over the last few decades, RWE Power has developed an approach that is broadly recognised by the stake-holders in the region. The best proof for this is the high proportion of resettlees taking part in the joint resettlement scheme offered. This can only be achieved by constant involvement of the stakeholders in the resettlement process. In conclusion, it can be stated that RWE Power has implemented a well-functioning stakeholder dialogue that guarantees the general acceptance necessary for mining operations.

Batu Hijau is a new copper and gold mine located on the island of Sumbawa in the Republic of Indonesia. This paper details the design and construction of the Batu Hijau overland conveyor, one of the most challenging efforts of the project. The 1.8 m wide, 5.6 km long conveyor has a design capacity of over 10,000 mtph and carries primary crushed ore through the steep mountains of Sumbawa, which necessitated a 160 m vertical downhill section, a 75 m vertical uphill section, ten vertical curves and one horizontal curve.

Rio Algom Limited are currently undergoing a major expansion of their mining operations in the Elliot Lake area. To date this has involved the increase of output at the Quirke Mine from 4080 to 6350 tonnes per mill day (4500 to 7000 tons), the rehabilitation of the Panel Mine to produce at the rate of 2990 tonnes per mill day (3300 tons) by 1980, and the rehabilitation of the Stanleigh Mine to produce 4540 tonnes per mill day (5000 tons) by 1984. In addition, the planning for the rehabilitation of the Milliken Mine to produce 4990 tonnes per mill day (5500 tons) is now underway. This major expansion is taking place at a time of increasing awareness of occupational health matters and has involved very high capital expenditures and detailed planning related to the ventilation system to endeavour the provision of an acceptable environment. The paper discusses the ventilation systems, established and proposed, and relates them to historical and current data on mine air contaminants.

Calcine is transported from the Reduction Plant at 850°C in insulated hopper cars and charged into three rectangular electric melting furnaces each equipped with three - 18.5 MVA transformers. The electrical energy is applied through six in line prebaked carbon electrodes, and slag and metal are tapped at opposite ends of the furnaces on an intermittent basis. The slag, 5000 tonnes per day, is disposed of by a pot train directly to the dump. The ferronickel, 250 tonnes per day, is tapped into 40 tonne capacity ladles in which it is refined in two ASEA-SKF ladle furnace stations. Casting is done over lip at 1520°C in a pig casting machine with stepless speed control at up to 55 tonnes per hour. The ingots are stacked into self palletizing bundles weighing about 1500 kilograms and are strapped and tagged and transported to the seaport, from which the final shipment is made to the world market. The paper describes constructional details and gives information of both normal operation and start-up and shut-down procedures. Consumption figures for refractory, electrodes, electric energy and refining additions are given and metal chemistry is given before and after refining.

One of the chief sources of the world's supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks which runs northeastward through an area called the Eastern Townships, south of the St. Lawrence River in the Province of Québec. The productive portion of this belt extends from the town of Asbestos in the south, for a distance of some 9,5 km to beyond the village of East-Broughton. The first discovery of asbestos in this region was made in 1874. Only crude fibre was produced until 1888 when the first mill was erected near the town of Black Lake. Since the inception of the industry, almost 100 years ago, no less than 100 different compa¬nies have been formed and 46 different mines have been operated. There are presently 5 active companies in the area providing direct employment for 4100 workers, down from 6000 during the seventies.

Anomalies of sulfur dioxide and other gases have been defined, by direct measurement, around various sulfide bodies. These readings were made (1) in soil gas and (2) in the atmosphere, from both ground vehicles and, to a limited extent, from helicopters. Test areas included porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits, sulfide bearing vein systems, pyrite zones associated with sandstone uranium accumulations, and pyrite-bearing mine dumps. Some of the deposits are covered by as much as several hundred feet of overburden or barren rock, while others outcrop, or have been exposed by mining operations. Depending on local conditions, background values of sulfur dioxide in soil gas and the atmosphere range from 1 to 15 parts per billion. Using present techniques, anomalous readings are recognized at approximately two times background. Apparent "depth penetration? on known deposits has ranged to several hundred feet. Readings have been made over known deposits from a helicopter and ground vehicle moving at up to 40 mph. The rate at which the survey may be carried out depends largely on the size and extent of the anomaly. The existence and magnitude of sulfur dioxide anomalies around sulfide-bearing deposits is a function of geology, target size, soil moisture, and climatic conditions such as temperature and temperature changes, barometric pressure, wind velocity, and precipitation. Industrial S02 pollution can effectively mask the presence of the anomalies sought.

The mining of underground coal presents several hazards for miners, including the risk of an explosion fueled by methane gas and coal dust. Methane gas, produced during coal formation, can continuously leak into old workings and build up through its lower explosive limit. Underground coal mines are required to maintain safe conditions, either by ventilating old workings or sealing them off using approved methods. Seals must be designed to withstand instantaneous pressures for a minimum of four seconds. A design strength of at least 50 pounds per square inch (psi) is required for atmospheres monitored and maintained inert, 120 psi for non-inert or not monitored, and greater than 120 psi for special cases. Due to the high cost and testing environment availability, most mine seals are designed through calculations and computer modeling and not subjected to full-scale testing in a representative environment. High pressure is not the only threat that mine seals may be exposed to. During an underground explosion, pressure waves and gas expansion may propel common mine items and objects to a high velocity, generating enough energy to damage mine seals and reduce their strength. Damaged mine seals may fail to contain their rated pressure, allow high pressure gas and fumes to vent through the seal during an explosion, or allow gasses to leak through the seal later after an explosion has occurred. This paper examines the effects of high velocity impacts of common mine materials and items on a reinforced mine seal rated to 120 psi.

The filtration of phosphogypsum is a ubiquitous step in the manufacturing of phosphoric acid. It is highly desired to achieve the minimum concentration of P2O5 in the phosphogypsum cake. This work is aimed at addressing P2O5 losses in phosphogypsum (PG) along with the recovery of P2O5 from slurry by using constant pressure filtration at 1 bar pressure. Laboratory tests were carried out in the phosphoric acid production plant situated in Paradeep, India. Recycled water source near acid plant (i.e., pond water) was used for cake washing to reduce the burden on fresh water stock. The findings indicated that pressure filtration offered the most effective P2O5 recovery (nearly 93.48%). The moisture was reduced to 14–16%, and watersoluble P2O5 in the gypsum cake was found to be negligible. A narrow particle size distribution was observed, which offered effective filterability with average cake resistance of 2.38 × 1010 m/kg, indicating a moderately separable cake.

A metallurgical/flux is a substance that is added to combine with gangue (unwanted minerals) during ore smelting, with impurities in a molten metal, or with other additives in metal refining processes to form a slag that can be separated from the metal. Because slags are immiscible with the metallic melt and are of lower density, a separation of the slag and metal occurs if the viscosity and surface tension are of the proper values. The chemistries of slags are adjusted to provide the proper melting point, viscosity, surface tension, conductivity, specific heat, density, or chemical properties to effect the desired task. In addition to absorbing impurities from the metal, the purposes of the slag are to thermally insulate the metal bath, protect the molten metal from the atmosphere, and control the chemical potential of the system. Several excellent references on slags and metallurgical fluxes are available (Boynton, 1980, Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985, Turkdogan, 1983, Rosenqvist, 1974, Fine and Gaskell, 1984). The function of the slag might vary at different stages within a process prior to final melting. For example, the slag composition and behavior will change as materials descend in the iron blast furnace, or as they melt in the early stages of formation of steel- making slags. Selection of the chemistry for a slag might be influenced by factors outside the primary function as when blast furnace slags are used to make cement, rock wool insulation, or fertilizer supplements. Sometimes slags contain a sufficient amount of valuable recoverable elements to be sold as raw materials for other processes. Fluxes are often referred to as acid, basic, or neutral. Acid fluxes are those that generally form acids in water and bases are those that would generally form bases in water. Typical acid fluxes are silica, alumina, and phosphorus, although alumina can function as either an acid or base. Typical basic fluxes are lime and magnesia. Fluorspar, or calcium fluoride, is a neutral substance because it can be viewed as the reaction product of a base and an acid. The degree of acidity (ratio of acids to bases) or basicity (ratio of bases to acids) is often specified to characterize the slag chemistry for a particular system. The system might also be referred to as acid or basic depending on the choice of slag, for example, basic steelmaking uses slags with more bases (lime and magnesia) than acids (silica and alumina). Many forms of minerals and compounds have been used as fluxes depending on the process requirements, availability, costs, requirements for recycling of intermediate products, and environmental concerns. Because slags are most often mixtures of oxides and silicates, fluxes are usually oxides, carbonates (which decompose to oxides) and silicates. Slags comprising phosphates, borates, sulfides, carbides, or halides have also been used (Rosenqvist, 1974, Moore, 1981, Szekely et al., 1989). In ironmaking and steelmaking, some acidic components are sometimes added. In nonferrous processes slags and fluxes are acidic with silica as the primary component, and although the use of basic flux such as limestone or lime is not extensive, some amount is used to modify slag properties and some refining slags are lime based. The production of iron is accomplished by smelting of ores, pellets, and sinter in blast furnaces with subsequent refining of molten iron and scrap in oxygen-blown processes. The electric furnace is used to make steel, stainless steels, ferroalloys, and special alloys, whereas ferromanganese is often made in blast furnaces. Fluxes are used in all of these processes, and either limestone or lime is the major flux component with some dolomite, dolomitic lime, silica, alumina, and fluorspar being used. In ironmaking, the flux is added either by direct charging or through sinter and fluxed pellets. In steel refining by the basic oxygen process, flux is added as lime and dolomitic lime that are either charged as lumps or injected as fines. Some small amount of limestone is sometimes used. Fluorspar is often added as lumps or mixed with other fine materials in briquettes. Alumina is sometimes added to blast furnaces either by direct charging of sized lumps or through sinter. Typical acid fluxes are sand, gravel, quartz rock, used silica brick, or raw siliceous ore (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Olivine, which is a magnesium-silicate mineral, has been added to iron blast furnaces to enhance removal of alkalis (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Alumina in the form of bauxite, aluminiferous clay, and recycled alumina brick has been used as flux. Alumina can function amphoterically as either an acid or base, for example it can form aluminum silicate in high silica slags or calcium aluminate in lime-bearing slags (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Limestone (calcium carbonate) and dolomite (magnesium-calcium carbonate), or fluxstones as they are sometimes called (Boynton, 1980), and their calcined forms, lime and dolomitic lime are the major basic fluxes. In the latter cases, the carbonates are de- composed in a kiln-type process to drive off carbon dioxide that might otherwise interfere with the subsequent smelting or refining process or require expensive forms of energy to effect the decomposition (e.g., by combustion of coke in the iron blast furnace). Limestone is considerably less expensive than lime because it is not calcined; however, lime is far more difficult to handle and reacts readily with water. Dolomite and dolomitic lime are used for their magnesia content. Fluorspar is a neutral flux often used as an additive in steel- making slags to improve fluidity, but it has also been used in combination with lime as a primary slag in electroslag refining (Duckworth and Hoyle, 1969). Many problem associated with potential hazards in a proposed mining area may not be adequately appraised because of the complexity of trying to evaluate them in terms of production requirements. Frequently, encountered hazards have to be dealt with by day-to-day operational schemes that require the miner to either force a way through them or avoid them by blocking off the area in which the hazards are known to exist. These considerations, after the mine is in full production, can be costly to the mine operator and can increase the danger to the miners. A hazard-evasion computer program for mine planning that will appraise proposed mine layouts on the basis of existing or potential hazards has therefore been developed. The program is intended for use during the planning phase of a mine, where it should assist the mining engineer in making decisions in mine design. With the output from this program, the mining engineer should be able either to corroborate his judgments made on the basis of mining experience or to find unanticipated solutions to design problem. The program tests hundreds of possible solutions to a mining layout, and by sorting out the 10 best (based on a criteria of minimum-abandoned-coal) limits the number of choices that need to be considered and appraised for applicability to a given mine scheme.

Introduction Evidence from blast furnace operations has indicated that using pellets with a higher ISO low temperature reducibility, a lower SiO2 content, and better resistance to low temperature degradation results in considerable coke savings and improved furnace operation. Although these benefits could not be directly related to reducibility differences alone, we believed there was sufficient evidence of the advantages in improved pellet reducibility to warrant laboratory investigation of ways and means to effect such improvements. It is well known that pellet reducibility can be significantly altered by changes in the basicity and the amount of non-iron oxide constituents. Past work (Friel and Erickson, 1980, 1982; Saeki et al., 1977; Thanning, 1974) has shown that with increased MgO contents, and at optimum CaO/S1O2 ratios, significant improvement in low temperature reducibility can be attained. The improved properties of such fluxed pellets have reportedly led to increased blast furnace efficiency and productivity (Saeki et al., 1977; Ilmoni, 1975). Less well known, however, is exactly what factors control reducibility in acid pellets. Because of this gap in knowledge, studies were undertaken of the factors affecting reducibility in acid pellets and to estimate their relative significances in modifying reduction behavior. This paper describes that part of our work done to determine the effect of bentonite on reduction behavior. Our approach was to first examine the effect of bentonite's presence on as pure an iron oxide as possible (i.e., a magnetite "superconcentrate" containing about 0.2% SiO2) so as to eliminate any gangue-binder interaction. The “Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.

Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution.. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated predominance diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of investment value or use value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would actually sell for if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation if market value is being appraised. The comparable sales and replacement cost methods used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail when used in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.
