Excavating the building pit for the World Trade Center at Rijeka, it was necessary to blast over 160000 m3 of hard mass in fused condition. The building pit is located at a densely populated residential part of the main Croatian port Rijeka, close to the railway-track and traffic routes of the town. The permanent seismic monitoring points are foreseen on endangered housing and infrastructure facilities around the pit during designing and excavation of it. The seismic monitoring has been performed on 15 permanent points by occasion of over a hundred production and continuous blasting operations. The article considers the speeds of ground oscillations depending on applied maximum quantities of explosive charge according to fire degree, total quantities of explosives at the mine-field, structure of explosive charge, applied delay of mine boring and lines initiation mode and rock mass structure

Through systematic analysis and experimentation, blasting guidelines were meticulously developed, aiming to enhance grindability and equipment productivity. The implementation of these guidelines promises significant improvements in operational efficiency and resource utilization, positioning Mont-Wright mine at the forefront of sustainable iron-ore extraction.

To better protect the nation and inform difficult defense and preparedness decisions, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is performing a probabilistic risk assessment of explosive terrorism risk to the US homeland. After assessing existing models against requirements, well-developed mathematical descriptions and algorithms associated with explosives hazards were combined with probabilistic modeling techniques used in DHS chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) terrorism risk assessments to create a suitable interior explosive consequence model for assessing the impact to human health.

Cerro Negro Mine, property of Goldcorp Inc., is in the process of developing four separate underground access ramps for the exploitation of high grade, narrow vein gold deposits with vertical to sub-vertical dips. The Mariana Central, Mariana Norte, and San Marcos accesses are primarily in the development stages, while the Eureka access began production stope blasting in April of 2013. Mariana Central will also begin production in May or June of 2014.

Unimin Corporation operates an underground Silica Sand mine at Guion, AR located in North Central Arkansas. The Silica Sand deposit at Guion is part of the St. Peter Sandstone Formation, which is overlain by a competent dolomitic limestone from the Joachim formation, acting as the roof directly above. Both the St. Peter and the Joachirn Formations are of Middle Ordovician age.

Homestake Mining Company's Open Cut Mine is located in Lead, South Dakota, in the northern Black Hills. The mine is within 300 feet of occupied residences on the south end, and within 1200 feet on the north end. Mining began at the north end of the open pit in October, 1983, and blasting related complaints began almost immediately. Noise and ground movement comprised the majority of the structural damage claims. As a result of these complaints, Homestake purchased a recording seismograph and began monitoring nearly every blast. In addition, the company hired a consultant to review Homestake's blasting and monitoring practices. He was also asked to do a single, one-time study of the cracks in six homes. This initial work led to Homestake monitoring all blasts with three seismographs and having South Dakota School of Mines and Technology do a year-long study of crack development and propagation in five homes in Lead.

Every blasting engineer or professional can attest to the age-old conundrum of obtaining accurate hole information on a large scale prior to loading explosive charges in a blast hole. Even though the benefits of QA/QC are well known and documented and are becoming increasingly important when digitizing and automating mining operations, the QA/QC process itself has not changed significantly over generations. The current methods where operators deploy measuring tapes of variable standards recording their subjective assessment of hole length on a paper blast map or manually transcribing to a tablet, are unreliable and non-auditable. Additionally, the process in its current form is time intensive, obtaining only moderate results and benefits, making it difficult or impossible to resource in today’s tight labour markets. Often only two data points, depth, and water presence, are captured when visiting the hole resulting in a high cost per bit of data. For these reasons, the process is seldom done on a large scale, let alone integrated. The QA/QC process in its current shape is a gap that will need to be addressed if autonomous blasting and mining is to become a reality.

This increased awareness usually results in an outcry for tighter regulations and restrictions on those in the blasting industry. Those affected do not often understand the dynamics of blasting and are simply fearful of the unknown. This reaction very often results in more regulations and restrictions which frequently fail to address the real problems.

Explosives used for blasting operations in civil engineering works, like construction of piping systems under roads, of pools, of houses and buildings can generate large volumes of carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide can represent between 1 to 3% of the gases produced by usual explosives. The production of 10 to 24 1 of CO by kg of explosives blasted is theoretically anticipated. CO is a gas that has no characteristic colour, smell or taste. It can migrate in the fractured rock of the blasted areas on fair distances, and then infiltrate in closed spaces like sewage systems, manholes, but also in basements of houses. In Quebec, in the last 10 years, 7 people were poisoned by CO in their houses to the point that they had to be treated in hyperbaric chambers. In the USA, many accidents have occurred and one worker died in a manhole. From the review of intoxication cases, the distance of migration of CO may reach 55 m if a conduit is present underground. Underground conduits broken by blast, tilling around underground conduits in road or house trenches, or fractured rock created by blasts between houses or between a house and a road, are the different pathways identified in the Quebec incidents. Field tests were performed at sites close to CO intoxication locations in order to evaluate the behaviour of CO in fractured rock following blasting operations. From these tests, the following conclusions may be drawn. The structural geology of the rock formation (schistosity, family of joints, fractures) plays a role in the direction and extent of gas migration in fractures generated when rock is blasted with explosives. The confinement of the rock can affect the quantity of gas migrating in the fractured rock. Significant concentrations of CO may persist in the fractured rock even 7 days after a blast. Advection is the initial mechanism of CO migration in fractured rock generated by the blasts or naturally occurring before the blast. The distance of migration with this mechanism is short (5 to 8 m). In trenches of muck (equivalent to tills under roads) the distance of CO migration by advection is 12 to 20 m. In the 2 to 3 days following the blasts, further CO migration up to 15 m is made by diffusion in the induced fractures, or up to 30 m in the trenches. To minimise CO production and migration in the fractured rock during blasting, special procedures can be applied by the blasting contractors: (1) do the complete excavation of the overburden before drilling and put mats for each blast; (2) do the complete excavation of the muck after each blast; (3) the last blasting should be the one for the private services entrance of the house and the excavation of the muck should begin at the junction between the road trench and the services entrance trench. Another technique consists in the pumping of interstitial air in the muck with a vacuum truck immediately after each blast.

The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME), a non-profit safety and security organization founded in 1913, is known for its industry best practices, Safety Library Publications (SLP), some of which have been incorporated into rules by regulatory agencies. The IME developed the first commercial storage, quantity distance (Q/D) table titled “The American Table of Distances” (ATD). It was developed by IME’s legacy association in 1910 and was originally based on observations of structural damage from 117 accidental explosions involving small to very large amounts of explosives, primarily dynamite and black powder. In 1930, the IME published a book, compiled by Ralph Assheton, called the “History of Explosions on Which the American Table of Distances was Based”. The distance in feet in the ATD were founded on the measurements at which inhabited buildings sustained substantial structural damage from the accidental detonation of explosives. For example, minor damage such as window glass breakage and the “shaking down” of plaster was not considered substantial structural damage. Other damage to property that was readily repairable was also not considered “substantial.” It was concluded that unless some integral portion of the building was damaged, the occupants would not be subjected to serious risks.

Safety concern is one of the most important parameters in the design of building demolition by explosive blasting. Accidents were sometimes reported due to the flying chips of fragmented materials in building demolition work in urban area. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the failure behavior of reinforced concrete pillars under blast loading and to develop an effective protection technique. Sixteen reinforced concrete pillars were constructed with two sizes: 450×450×1800 mm and 600×300×1800 mm. The failure behavior and the flying chip velocities were observed by means of a high-speed camera. Protection scheme was designed and the effects of several protection materials were investigated. Two kinds of non-woven fabrics and wire net were tested as protection materials. The results showed that reinforcing bar was one of the important factors to determine specific charges, and that mesh size of wire net and tied-up method affected the protection of flying chips. Control of gas effects is also a key to the control of flying chips. It was recommended to use both wire net and nonwoven fabrics as primary and secondary protection materials. Such protection scheme was successfully applied to the explosive demolition of 16 and 17-story apartment buildings.

On July 10, 1926, lightning struck at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, and caused the explosion of at least 600,000 pounds (272,000 kilograms) of ammunition, resulting in more than $600 million (2015 dollars) in damage, the destruction of 200 buildings, and 22 deaths. Fortunately, there has not been a major incident involving lightning and explosives in the US in some time, though lightning has destroyed fuel storage tanks in recent years, including in North Dakota, Texas, and Ohio. Lightning poses a significant hazard to the explosives industry. Carrying high currents and temperature, lightning can cause explosives to detonate, start fires near storage facilities, and injure or kill operators.

Many technical challenges were encountered while conducting near-field construction blasting between the critical intersection of Interstate 10 and multiple active railroad tracks in El Paso, Texas, for the Loop 375 Border West Expressway Project. Blasting was utilized for the removal of an andesite bedrock ridge in preparation for the construction of a new elevated super structure to be suspended over the existing railroad tracks. There was concern that the excessive vibrations and/or permanent rock deformation produced from the blasting within near proximity (20 feet, or 6.09 meters) of the railroad tracks would induce excessive stress and foul the tracks by shifting the alignment. This could result in a major loss of scheduling control between the two major railroad companies that operate in this area. The modern drill and blast engineer operates in an environment often rich with data from drilling data and blast designs vs. actuals to fragmentation distributions and vibration records. Despite this abundance, much of the information generated remains underutilized, often collected as a matter of routine rather than for a means to an end. This paper explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can bridge that gap, transforming raw operational information into actionable insights that lead to more consistent and optimized blasting outcomes. Through AI-driven analysis of drilling logs, burden and spacing measurements in design vs. actual, fragmentation distributions, and vibration records, we can identify hidden patterns and correlations that traditional analytics overlook or that we may not be aware of. These insights enable engineers to proactively adjust designs and loading strategies, ultimately improving performance aspects such as improving fragmentation, minimizing ground vibration, and lowering overall operational costs. The paper examines the industry's reliance on lagging indicators, such as post-blast fragmentation surveys or actual powder factors, and suggests the need to shift toward leading indicators like real-time drill data monitoring and predictive fragmentation modeling. Utilizing AI to forecast outcomes before a blast is carried out allows engineers to take corrective actions early in the process, thereby creating a feedback loop that continuously improves performance. This integration of AI into drilling and blasting practices marks a pivotal opportunity for the explosives engineering field to evolve from reactive to predictive methodologies unlocking a new level of operational intelligence and value creation.

Blasting near residential areas has become frequent in many locations throughout Brazil. It was deemed necessary by the authors to have a better understanding of how typical Brazilian structures respond to blast vibrations and compare this response to environmental forces that naturally act on these structures. Typical Brazilian structures are built with clay bricks and cement-mortar. Foundations comprise concrete beam perimeter walls and thin concrete slabs. Roofs are very heavy as they are construction with clay tiles over a wood frame. Typically, walls are cover with cement grout, spackling (or plastered) and then painted. Interior walls are made of clay bricks and mortar to divide in rooms inside the structures.

The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) began development of a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) tool, IMESAFR (Institute of Makers of Explosives Safety Analysis for Risk), in 2005 as a technology transfer effort with the United States Department of Defense (US DoD). Version 2.0 of the software has been developed over the last two years and introduces many new features and upgrades. Key upgrades include a new map-based user interface, new debris density hazard models, a metric version, and additional user options referred to as “conservatism switches”.
