The early to mid 1980s was a period of mining consolidation, and many senior design engineers retired from the mill industry. Similar conditions have existed in the last few years. This creates a loss of a tremendous amount of experience. This paper is a look back by two senior mill designers who survived the dips in both time periods. From a continuous design practice of over 25 years, mill designs and fabrication practices are surveyed with a view of identifying what works, and is necessary, and what doesn’t, or is not necessary, in the creation of a safe, economic, long-lived grinding mill.

Broom and Yant6/ recently described a. microprojection method for determining the particle-size distribution and number concentration of samples of dust collected from the air by such samplers as the Owens jet dust counter) and the thermal precipitator8/ . This method was developed to obviate or reduce the eyestrain consequent to the regular filar-micrometer method9/ and to save time and work. The article stated that work was in progress on a micrcprojection method for counting impinger dust samples; this article describes the method developed. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The assistance of the personnel of the ventilation Department of the Anaconda Copper Miring Co., Butte, Mont., in developing this method and particularly in suggesting a suitable material to use for the microprojector screen is sincerely appreciated. Much of the work was done in the laboratory of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. on samples collected in Butte mines during a cooperative study with this Bureau.

INTRODUCTION The Transbay-Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) Project involves the construction of an approximately 1.5-mile rail line that will extend Caltrain commuter service and the future California High Speed Rail system into downtown San Francisco. The underground rail extension will be constructed by mined tunnel and cut-and-cover methods. Tunneling challenges include difficult ground conditions, low rock cover, the presence of historic buildings along the alignment, and the large tunnel span, ranging from approximately 50 to 65 feet. Three mined tunnel construction methods were evaluated: the Stacked Drift Method, the New Austrian Tunneling Method/Sequential Excavation Method (NATM/SEM), and Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). This paper describes the challenges presented within the mined tunnel section, and summarizes the evaluation of tunneling methods that led to the selection of NATM/SEM. PROJECT OVERVIEW The existing Transbay Terminal opened in downtown San Francisco in 1939. This facility is antiquated, and does not meet current building seismic safety standards or the transportation needs of the Bay Area. For these reasons, San Francisco voters approved Proposition H in 1999, which proposed to construct a new or rebuilt regional transit center at the site of the existing terminal and extend Caltrain commuter rail ser-vice to the new transit center. The new transit center is the hub of the Transbay Transit Center (TTC) Program, which will greatly enhance regional transit service by providing connectivity for six Bay Area transit providers at one facility. Ilmenite-bearing paleo-beach deposits were discovered in Jylland, Denmark using a combination of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), portable X-ray fluorescence (XMET), bulk XRF analyses, Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM), and wire line logging. The Miocene-age paleo-beach deposits are located below a thin Quaternary cover in a region of very moderate relief and essentially no outcrop demanding unique approaches in exploration. Initially, an isopach map of the Quaternary is prepared from existing water well data. A geological model for likely occurrence of Miocene paleo-beach deposits is generated and the coincidence of thin Quaternary cover and potential paleo-beach deposits define targets for detailed exploration. The defined targets are traversed with GPR to identify paleo-beach structures which are then used to define a drilling program. This methodology located a paleo-barrier island at the Vorslunde location with more than 10% ilmenite in the sand. During the drilling process, the TiO2 and heavy mineral contents of the sand were logged every meter with a portable XRF unit (XMET) and subsequently calibrated more accurately by comparison to bulk XRF and CCSEM analyses for selected samples. The bulk XRF data also provided more complete compositional information. Insitu determination of geology, heavy mineral abundance, and corroboration of the XRF logging was done using wire line logs, a combination of spectral gamma and induction conductivity logs. Detailed characteristics (abundance, grain size, shape) and chemical composition of minerals was determined by the GEUS CCSEM methodology (Frei et al, this vol.). The average weight percent TiO2 for all Ti-minerals is 62%, 60% excluding rutile. That elevated TiO2 content (>> ilmenite stoichiometric value, ca. 50 %) indicates that ilmenite experienced an iron-leaching environment. The source of the sand deposit was investigated by dating contained zircon. The results show that the likely sources of zircon are in southern Norway and southwestern Sweden with common zircon ages of ca 1100 Ma. and 1500 Ma.

Sublevel caving (SLC) is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of blasted ore and caved waste rock. Drilling and blasting are the initial and the major impact on primary fragmentation and later material flow characteristics. The heterogeneity of rock mass has a great impact on materials’ mechanical properties and plays a significant role in rock fragmentation by blasting. In this work, a numerical model for sublevel caving based on 3D Voronoi tessellations was developed to section rock mass into arbitrarily shaped regions for modelling the heterogeneous rock mass. A coupled finite element and discrete element method was employed to investigate both the fragmentation due to blasting and the gravity flow of ore in a heterogeneous orebody. In the coupled model, the caved waste rock was modelled with loose discrete particles while the orebody to be blasted was simulated with bonded particles. The detonation of explosives was described with a particle blast method and a finite element model was used to model the remaining orebody. The results indicated that the fragmentation at the upper part of the ring is coarse while it is fine at the lower part of the ring. The heterogeneity of rock mass induced some boulders after blasting.

Dado que las aguas pertolantes crean problemas en las operaciones de concentración de menas, se buscó un tratamiento selectivo de flotación por el cual pase la blenda(obtenida de yacimientos de cobre y zinc) separada del cobre. Empero, este proceso tiene dificultades porque no hay diferenciación de sus superficies cristalinas y los sulfuros de cobre son confundidos con los de zinc. Por ello, el objetivo del presente trabajo es mostrar las pruebas realizadas que permitan asegurar una perfecta activación de la blenda contenida en la mixtura, asi como una mejor separación del cobre y el zinc, entre otras, reuniendo las condiciones necesarias para su aplicación con el sulfato de cobre.

Construction of a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory(DUSEL) is proposed under the auspices of the US National Science Foundation(NSF). DUSEL will provide scientists and engineers with a research facility capable of supporting a broad spectrum of fundamental and applied research deep in the earth’s crust. Research partners are physicists, biologists and geoscientists. DUSEL research calls for the construction of a network of shafts, tunnels and caverns that will provide laboratory facilities at depths of up to approximately 2 kilometers. The Project is still in the planning stages but, the initial experimental program is taking shape and conceptual designs have already been developed at two hard rock mine sites. This paper discusses the overall program and key engineering tasks being developed to support the construction of deep, large-span caverns. These caverns will house a new generation of physics experiments. As currently scoped, the experiments call for the excavation of permanent caverns with spans of up to 60 meters, sited at depths in excess of a kilometer.

IN OFFERING a few comments and suggestions on trends in mining practice, and the methods and tools of tomorrow's mining, perhaps it will be appropriate to start with the subject of education. Charles Kettering, one of the best-known scientists and experimentalists in the automotive industry once said, in effect, that tech- 111ca1 schools have to be carefid not to teach a lot of hard and fast rules that may have been true once, but aren't so any more, or won't be presently. Possibly the mining school of the future will concern itself less with what has happened and more with what is going to happen. It will be built about or around problems. Such a school will be judged, not by the number of its students but by the quality of its improvements. To such a school the industry will send for men to solve particular problems. The industry will doubtless at some time sup- port such a school financially though a lot of hard work will be required to organize miners to undertake such financing, primarily because the mining industry, other than that concerned with iron and steel, is too loosely knit. Each company tends to its own knitting too closely for its own good. Wouldn't it be splendid if the mining industry would finance a "problem school" as suggested by Mr. Kettering and others.

The Material Service Thornton quarry is a multi-million annual production tons complex. Surrounded by busy surface highways, and divided by a railroad on the north/south axis and further divided by a major interstate highway on the east/west axis, blasting is a daily challenge. This paper deals with the problems of production blasting in an area adjacent to that interstate highway, and paralleling a busy four-lane highway. Discussion includes primary blasting issues such as borehole size, drill patterns and flyrock controls. Discussion also includes blast designs, timing schematics, smooth-wall blasting solutions, traffic and vibration concerns and many other factors influencing the success of this project.

The small scale alluvial gold mining industry in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is c.irrently the only form of small scale mining carried out in this country. It already contributes significantly to the economy with current production estimated at 2 000-2 500kg per year. Until recently, small scale alluvial gold mining has been confined to simple panning and sluicing of high grade alluvial and colluvial deposits. Traditionally the small scale miner in PNG has only worked gravels with gold grades in excess of 500mg/m3. Grades of this order are required to justify the hard physical labour involved ~n hand operated small scale mining methods. .he introduction of higher throughput technologies such as trommels fed by hydraulic excavators has the effect of altering what constitutes an economically viable deposit. Mechanised techniques allow for the consideration of grades of almost half that level. The potential and opportunities for utilising this type of small scale mechanised mining in PNG are enormous with large areas of ground with gold grades running in excess of 250mg/m3 and often up to 2000mg/m3 throughout the country. An assessment of the current operating economics of this technology in the PNG context is the principal objective of this paper. Small to medium scale mechanised mining can potentially contribute significantly to the PNG economy particularly as it lies within the react-, of many PNG businessmen. Its potential is currently somewhat limited by a general lack of infrastructure and is also constrained by socio-political factors.
