The Ohaaki Rhyolite and the Rautiwiri Breccia are two volcanic units occurring in the shallow and deep parts of the Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system. Alteration of these units by chloride waters results in distinct mineral assemblages that also have distinct whole rock compositions. The Ohaaki rhyolite is altered to an assemblage dominated by quartz, adularia, illite and pyrite as a consequence of silica, potassium and sulfur metasomatism. Locally, these rocks contain up to 0.5 ppm Au. The Rautiwiri Breccia by contrast is altered to an assemblage dominated by albite, adularia, quartz, illite, chlorite and pyrite in association with modest sodium metasomatism. Whole rock oxygen isotope compositions of altered rocks range between 3.3 and 7.5 ë, and are generally lower compared to their fresh rock equivalents having values of 9.5 to 10.6 ë; the result is broad pattern of lower values with increasing alteration intensity.

During August, 1926, with the consent of Mr. Schell, mine manager, the writer conducted a mill test on this company's concentrators. Mr. Schell not only gave him his permission, but rendered all possible assistance. Although it was impossible to take all the samples one could have wished to obtain, yet the salient points of the mill flow-sheet were sampled for a continuous period of eight hours, and from these samples and separate data supplied by the manager, valuable information was collected.THE MINEThis is a true vein-type of mine; the lode formations, striking almost due north-south, cut the large porphyritic intrusion at right angles. There are three distinct veins on this property - parallel, persistent, and dipping at an angle varying between 40° - 50° to the horizontal.The country rock is very sound, and timber, save for the small amount required for ore chutes, is entirely absent from all mine workings.The lode varies from a width of 1 in. to 8 in., but the stopes are carried forward with a minimurn width of about 30 in.The mine is particularly dry for a West Coast property, and conditions underground are very favourable. This paper discusses support requirements for the proposed monorail system to be used in decline development. The monorail drilling and loading systems are systems that move on the rail (monorail) installed in the roof of the decline and supported by roof bolts, suspension chains and steel supports. However, due to the weight of the components of the two systems, it is imperative that the force in each roof bolt, suspension chain and steel support capable of suspending the weight of the heaviest component is determined. Numerical models that relate the weight of the monorail drilling and loading components to the required strength in the support system have been developed. Using these developed models, numerical values of the forces in each roof bolt, suspension chain and steel support, required to suspend the weight of the heaviest component of the monorail drilling and loading systems are determined.

Os aços baixo carbono microligados representam uma parcela significativa da produção de placas de aço na ArcelorMittal Tubarão e sua participação na produção total tem sido crescente ao longo dos últimos anos. Entretanto, grande parte da necessidade do mercado por este tipo de material se dá em larguras pequenas, o que inviabiliza a sua produção em equipamentos de grande escala, como é o caso da ArcelorMittal Tubarão. Neste trabalho será apresentado um resumo das ações tomadas na ArcelorMittal Tubarão visando viabilizar a produção deste tipo de aço em pequenas larguras, através do aumento de sua velocidade de lingotamento e análise constante da qualidade interna das placas. Uma vez consolidado o aumento de velocidade, com a consequente redução do tempo de lingotamento, foi possível reavaliar a aceitação de placas com menor largura e padronizar esta nova condição. Também, durante a execução deste trabalho, foram reavaliados os critérios de retirada de amostras para os ensaios de macro-ataque nos aços de baixo carbono e baixa liga.

This report summarizes all work performed under Phases I, II and III of U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract H0387006, "Development of a Prototype Retrofit Noise Control Treatment for Jumbo Drills." The noise and vibration levels of four jumbo drills were characterized and a survey of percussive rock drill usage is reported. A Gardner-Denver DH 123 drill was chosen as a demonstration drill, and extensive noise diagnostic studies were performed. Noise control treatments were designed, developed and evaluated in a reverberant drill test facility. The treatments consisted of an integral enclosure/muffler for the drifter, vibration isolation of the drifter from the enclosure and feed, and a drill steel sheath. A 19 dBA reduction in overall sound power level was achieved with no loss in drilling rate. The prototype retrofit treatments were field tested in an aboveground mine and in a production section of an underground zinc mine. Long-term durability and operator acceptance of the enclosure/muffler treatment were excellent. Preliminary evaluation of the drill steel sheath was encouraging, although additional testing is required.

O Processo Bayer para a produção de Óxido de Alumínio consiste em dissolver o alumínio presente na minério de alumínio (Bauxita) com soda cáustica à quente. Os resíduos insolúveis são separados por decantação e filtração. Após lavagem deste resíduo para a recuperação da alumina e soda cáustica ele é transferido para áreas de disposição. A Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio produz 420 mil toneladas de alumínio por ano gerando cerca de 2.400 toneladas de resíduo de bauxita por dia. Este resíduo é transferido para uma área de disposição, denominada Palmital, com capacidade de estocagem para mais 9 anos. Atualmente, o Palmital contém cerca de 2 milhões de metros cúbicos de água sobrenadante. Esta água contém alumínio e soda cáustica dissolvidos que podem ser reutilizados na Refinaria de Alumina. Este trabalho estuda formas de reutilização desta água sobrenadante visando aumentar a vida útil do Palmital, ou seja, aumentar o volume disponível para disposição de resíduo de bauxita.

Os modelos de tratamento de galvannealing, com encharque isotérmico após o aquecimento indutivo, permitem otimizar o aporte térmico para a formação de compostos intermetálicos Fe-Zn, o que contribui significativamente para a obtenção de revestimentos galvannealed-GA de elevada qualidade. Nesse estudo foi avaliado o efeito das condições de galvannealing na formação do revestimento GA sobre aços bake hardenable-BH. Foram realizadas, em escala de laboratório, simulações variandose o modelo de galvannealing, com ciclos isotérmicos e resfriamento imediatamente após o aquecimento indutivo, a temperatura de aquecimento, entre 525°C e 570°C, e o tempo de encharque, até 20 segundos. Em todas as simulações, além dos ciclos completos foram realizadas, também, interrupções do tratamento ao longo da etapa de encharque, através de resfriamento brusco das amostras, com o objetivo de se avaliar a microestrutura do revestimento ao longo de todo o tratamento. Para a caracterização dos revestimentos foram realizadas análises de composição química, microestrutura, perfil de composição ao longo da camada e de aderência. Os resultados permitiram determinar as características da formação do revestimento GA sobre os aços BH e estabelecer condições de galvannealing para o processamento desses aços, de forma a obter microestruturas otimizadas para as aplicações mais exigentes.

The Albany Research Center (ARC) conducted studies of mechanical activation by conventional and ultra-fine grinding techniques to enhance olivine reactivity in mineral carbonation reactions. Activated olivine is one of several solid feed materials used at ARC in reactions with carbon dioxide to form carbonate minerals. This paper compares grinding techniques via energy demand data and product characteristics, including particle size distributions, surface areas, full width at half maximum (FWHM) XRD analyses, and particle morphology by SEM analyses. Reactivity was gauged by percent conversion to carbonate in subsequent carbonation tests.

A unidade do Grupo SIMEC em Pindamonhangaba tem capacidade de produção de 560 mil toneladas/ano de produtos destinados à construção civil. Para abastecer a planta, é utilizada água de poço com pH, condutividade e alcalinidade altas, além de restrições quanto à disponibilidade. Isto gera desafios para o seu uso, e para a água de reposição do sistema de resfriamento dos moldes a água passa por um sistema de osmose reversa. No primeiro semestre de 2016, houve contaminação da água de molde, com a formação de uma incrustação de coloração branca, de aspecto oleoso e diferente das incrustações normalmente encontradas. Este fenômeno reduziu significativamente a vida dos moldes, o que levou à necessidade de paradas constantes para a troca e aumento significativos dos custos. Foi montado um grupo de trabalho de todas as áreas envolvidas, operação, manutenção e condicionamento químico para descobrir as causas e corrigir o problema. Este trabalho mostra as causas, as ações tomadas e os resultados obtidos.

Com a redução acentuada do preço do minério de ferro a redução de custos de produção de pelotas se torna ainda mais necessária. Nos fornos das usinas de pelotização é consumido o combustível responsável pelo maior custo de produção das pelotas, que é o gás natural. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo reduzir o consumo de gás natural utilizados nos fornos do tipo grelha móvel das usinas de pelotização, através da otimização dos fluxos de gases e temperaturas necessárias ao processamento térmico das pelotas.

Low-cost hydroelectric energy in the Pacific Nortnwest has been an important factor in the development of a ferroalloy industry. Eleven companies, employing approximately 1,000 persons, produce about 116,000 tons (1954-58 average) annually of ferrosilicon, ferrochromium, ferromanganese, ferrophosphorus, silicomanganese, and ferronickel. About 7,500 tons (1954-58 average) of these ferroalloys is consumed in the Pacific Northwest States of Washington and Oregon; the rest is used principally in other western and mid-western markets. In 1959, the Bureau of Mines began a study to determine the current status and to evaluate the potential of the ferroalloy industry in the Pacific Northwest. The Bureau gathered information from operating alloy plants in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana; from published materials; and from consumers of ferroalloys.

"A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. Cette couche est composee de grains de quartz angulaires dans une matrice composee d’illite >> kaolinite + dickite. Des fragments deformes riches en argile dans cette couche presentent des assemblages mineraux tres similaires. La presence de mineraux accessoires idiomorphes dont des oxydes de titane et des aluminophosphates-sulphates suggere que ces derniers ont une origine diagenetique / hydrothermale. La presence de grains de feldspath-K et d'amphibole est inhabituelle comparativement aux arenites quartziques typiques de l’Athabasca; initialement, ces mineraux constituaient probablement des inclusions dans le quartz detritique qui ont ete subsequemment liberees pendant la fracturation. Les textures et les caracteristiques de l'alteration suggerent que cette unite a subi une fracturation hydraulique et a ete alteree par un fluide hydrothermal - possiblement en lien avec les effets distaux de mise en place de la mineralisation en l'uranium."

Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production). The recently completed Lower Northwest Interceptor Program (LNWI) in Sacramento, California comprises, ten pairs of micro tunnels totaling 4,369 m (14,417 ft),three horizontal directionally drilled bores totaling 956 m (3,154 ft), and two large diameter tunnels under the Sacramento River totaling 1,198 m (3,953 ft). This paper briefly summarizes surface and subsurface conditions, and planning and design considerations. It then goes on to describe problems encounterd with each trenchless crossing, as well as lessons learned with respect to shaft construction, ground control at shafts during tunnel break-in and break-out, frac-out and heave, settlement, obstructions, coordination with permitting agencies, and application of geotechnical baseline reports.

As matérias primas para Alto Forno devem ter qualidade física adequada para melhor controle do processo e estabilidade operacional. A distribuição granulométrica e consequentemente sua estabilidade são importantes, pois interferem na porosidade e permeabilidade no interior do Alto-Forno, criando assim uma condição adequada e específica de marcha com reflexo na estabilidade da produção de gusa. A Sinterização da ThyssenKrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (TKCSA) foi projetada sem britagem secundária, devido à fase de ajustes no processo operacional e baixa produtividade havia dificuldade para controlar a fração grossa do sinter (> 50 mm), impactando na distribuição granulométrica do sinter. Visando reduzir os desvios da qualidade física, estudou-se a melhor relação da altura de camada x velocidade da esteira encontrando um ponto de equilíbrio entre os níveis de produção e qualidade especificada que, juntamente com o início da operação do britador secundário, resultou na garantia da qualidade física do sinter para os Altos Fornos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar o desenvolvimento e resultados deste estudo.

"Copper–cobalt extraction is a reagent-intensive process resulting in acid consumption greatly contributing towards production costs, which in the current market conditions curtail profitability. Nanofiltration (NF) membranes have become an attractive approach in the mining and minerals industry for product concentration and reagent recovery based on the ability of the membrane to separate monovalent ions from divalent ions. NF membranes can selectively separate acids from metals and salts allowing acid to be recycled as well as the concentration and purification of product streams. Membrane technology in the field of copper–cobalt processing focusses on the concentration of Cu2+ and Co2+ in the pregnant leach solution, recovery of acid from waste streams to neutralization, recovery of valuable metals from waste ponds and process water recovery. This paper aims to provide insight into the potential applications of NF membranes in copper–cobalt processing circuits as well as a brief overview of the effects of process conditions on membrane performance and process development. INTRODUCTION The copper–cobalt industry commonly uses inorganic acids, such as sulfuric acid, in large quantities for primary leaching of copper–cobalt oxide ores and releaching during product purification (Stuurman et al., 2014). This results in numerous acidic intermediate streams containing high metal concentrations and acidic waste streams with low metal concentrations. Acid consumption typically accounts for 10–15% of the operating costs of mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia (Acid Plant Database, 2015). Due to remote mine locations, poorly maintained roads and cross-border conflict, the cost of sulphuric acid can range between USD 300 and 400 per ton. The pivotal role of acid in the copper–cobalt extraction process has driven many mines to build sulphuric acid plants on site to ensure a reliable acid supply, however elemental sulphur still needs to be imported which faces similar logistical challenges and contributes towards operating costs."

It is almost exactly two hundred years since the foundations of the mining and metallurgical industries in Canada were laid. There '."'as nothing spectacular about this early start. It had to do with the most basic phases of these industries-the mining of coal and iron ore, and the manufacture of cast and wrought iron. At several points along the coast of Cape Breton island, coal seams may be seen outcropping quite conspicuously, and it is probable that they had been observed, and possibly worked in a small way, in very early times. However that may be, these coal seams have the distinction of being the first in North America of which there is any printed record, reference to them appearing in a volume by Nicolas Denys which was published in Paris in 1672. Regular coal mining in the district did not commence until about fifty years later, however. The metallurgists started their operations along the north shore of the St. Lawrence river. Here, at many points between Montreal and Quebec, are to be found deposits of bog iron ore, and in 1 730 a furnace for smelting such ore was established on the St. Maurice river. The St. Maurice forges continued in operation until 1880, and throughout that long period they were famed for the fine quality of castings produced, and also for a-superior wrought iron.
