"In selecting a suitable method to sink a vertical shaft for underground access, a number of constraints influence the ultimate decision of where and how to develop the shaft, not least among these being safety, development and construction time, and cost. Two additional considerations stand out: these being geotechnical conditions and technology, the latter taking into account existing underground access. Assuming a project for which an existing underground excavation is available, it is tempting to build a shaft sinking project from the outset based on the raiseboring method, which has the potential to be the safest, fastest, and least expensive method provided that geotechnical conditions permit.And therein lies the rub: regardless of project time or cost constraints, when it comes to raiseboring a long (say, greater than 500 m), large diameter (greater than 4.5 m) shaft, the rock mass conditions ultimately dictate what method of shaft sinking will be feasible. Over the course of several studies for a particular project, several geotechnical analyses were carried out specifically for the purpose of developing a shaft by raiseboring. Risk analysis and experience showed that where the rock mass conditions indicated an unacceptably high risk potential, an alternative method needed to be considered, even if this meant increasing both the time and financial requirements.In this paper we present an overview of geotechnical investigation practices for shaft sinking. Decisionmaking thresholds for raiseboring or other methods of shaft sinking are discussed, including probabilities of failure, empirical rock mass classification, basic wedge failure, and back-analysis of a failed case. The design of appropriate support, and analysis of relative safety benefits for various shaft sinking methods, falls outside the scope of this work, and will be presented in a separate paper.IntroductionThe potential for rock mass failure during shaft development and construction affects whether a project is completed safely, on time and on budget. During the course of several studies to establish ventilation shafts for an underground expansion project, geotechnical analyses of rock mass stability and failure potential were carried out. "The first in this series of two papers, on the potential of renewable electricity sources for mining operations in South Africa, investigated the internal structure of mining corporations to evaluate feasible alternative electricity sources that were identified as through earlier research. The purpose of this paper is to combine current knowledge about the external macroeconomic and the internal environments to produce a clear picture of how renewable sources of electricity could perform from the perspective of mining corporations in South Africa. The multi-attribute value theory (MAVT) approach was adapted to structure the research and results. The model was fed with real-time data provided from five different energy companies and four mining corporations operating in South Africa. The results show that the performance of hybrid versions of the currently used electricity sources (diesel generators and Eskom grid connection) with solar PV and onshore wind is favourable compared with the current sources alone. The advantage of diesel generators is significantly greater than that of the Eskom grid connection. By combining the macroeconomic influences with the MAVT results, hybrid solar PV versions are identified as having the greatest potential. In second place are hybrid wind solutions, which have the shortcoming that good wind conditions occur only in coastal regions where there are fewer mining activities. Geothermal hybrid versions are the least favourable owing to the lack of service infrastructure and high initial investment costs.IntroductionRecent developments in the macroeconomic environment necessitate an investigation of the internal structure of mining corporations to evaluate possible alternative electricitygenerating sources (Roehrl and Riahi, 2000). To be able to combine current knowledge of macroeconomic factors and the internal structure of mining corporations, the research process is presented in two papers. The first paper (Votteler and Brent, 2016) investigated the internal structure and argued that a strategic tool should be used to evaluate electricity sources from the perspective of mining corporations. The multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach was selected as the most appropriate strategic tool. Based on a literature review of previous similar MCDA approaches in energy planning, it was concluded that no adaptation of MCDA methods could be found from a corporate, mining, or South African perspective. Finally, the paper investigated the internal evaluation structure in collaboration with mining corporations, by identifying the criteria they use to evaluate electricity sources."

Operations of the strip mine at Arnot Colliery are described, and the improved volumetric extraction of the in situ coal reserves that has been obtained by the application of strip-mining techniques is highlighted. An account is given of the major problems encountered during the early stages of the operation with particular reference to overburden removal. coal and parting handling, and transportation. The techniques used in dealing with the problems and the current degree of success in overcoming them are outlined.

The scope of this paper is confined to gas-fluidized beds in pyrometalurgical applications. After considering the general characteristics of these fluidized beds, the author deals with their potential applications, using the following processes, which are currently under investigation, as examples: pretreatment of chromite, prereduction of manganese-ore and iron-ore fines, roasting and prereduction of ilmenite, and roasting and pyrolysis of gold-bearing pyrite. He concludes that fluidized beds are potentially of great benefit to the metallurgical industry, although much developmental work remains to be done.

An Analytical Solution to the Batch comminution Equation R. P. King, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Eng.), M. Se. (Eng.), Ph.D. (Visitor). An analytical solution to the batch-grinding equation is presented in terms of the generalized hypergeometric series and the confluent hypergeometnc function. This solution is valid for selection functions that are describe~ piece-wise by functional forms of the type KOXB and by normalized breakage functions of the type B(x,x') = (x/x')x. These functional forms are sufficiently general to Include most practical cases. In particular, they can be used to describe selection functions that have a maximum.

It seems to me to be particularly appropriate that this topic should be discussed at the first prize-giving function of this kind. As you know, this presentation of awards to young mining engineers and metallurgists is to be an annual event, and never before in the dynamic and rapidly changing climate of the South African metallurgical industry has it been more necessary for young, and perhaps older, practitioners to consider the future of their profession and their role in the industry. I look forward with interest to the time, five to ten years from now, when I shall recall my crystal-gazing of tonight to see how far wrong I have been.

Consideration is given to the technical and economic feasibility of freeze desalination as a technique for the simultaneous provision of ice to cool deep mines and for the desalination of mine water. Freeze desalination has not been developed fully or commercially. For sea-water applications, it may not offer significant advantages over other methods of desalination but, for the unique mining application, a single dual purpose plant that produces desalinated ice could offer significant cost savings over combinations of separate desalinators and ice-makers. The current status 01 freeze desalination is reviewed, and the important aspects relating to mines are discussed. Some freezing processes that could be suitably modified are described. The possible use of conventional ice-making machines for desalinating mine water is also discussed.

Rates of return realized on investments in the gold mines of the newer goldfields outside the Witwatersrand were calculated and analysed over various time intervals and on various bases. It is shown that these rates of return are strongly correlated with changes in the gold price and cannot be equated with the returns that are expected when investments are made, and that the changes in gold price also affect the rates of return on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as a whole. These correlations are used, together with a limited application of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, to suggest the expected levels of threshold returns in real terms for new mining projects, for projects on existing mines, and for share valuations.

Methods for the prediction of seepage quality from waste-disposal facilities are evaluated for input to the design of desalination treatment facilities. This is done by reference to a waste dump seeping into a near-surface aquifer, the contaminated seepage being collected by scavenger wells. As the quality of contaminated water intercepted by the wells will vary with both space and time, it is necessary for predictive methods to accommodate such variations. One-dimensional and two-dimensional predictive solute transport models are described and applied to the seepage and scavenger-well example mentioned above. The advantages and disadvantages, interims of overall applicability, data requirements, and possible accuracy, are described and discussed. While one-dimensional models have the advantages of speed, simplicity, and cost, the frequent requirement of prediction in both space and time necessitates more complex, two-dimensional simulation.

(Rand) (Fellow) The processes involved in the smelting in an electric furnace of nickel-copper concentrates containing platinumgroup metals are described. These are concentrate drying, pelletizing, pellet drying, and flux and pellets proportioning, followed by smelting of the concentrate in a submersible-electrode electric furnace, which is discussed in more detail. The furnace matte is blown in a converter to the white-metal stage and is cast in moulds, whilst the slag is granulated, ground, and floated for recovery of valuable metals and afterwards pumped to the tailing dam.

The Grootegeluk coal-beneficiation plant was erected in the Waterberg coalfield, near Ellisras in the Transvaal, to supply Iscor's steelworks with a predetermined tonnage of coking coal in accordance with strict quality requirements. This plant has to handle a high tonnage of raw coal, which is not easy to beneficiate, in order to produce 1,82 X IQ6t of coal. Extensive tests were conducted on borehole cores and a mass sample of coal obtained from the area. These tests were carried out on a laboratory and pilot-plant scale, and were aimed at the establishment of the most effective beneficiation methods and the choice of suitable equipment. This led to the completion of a full set of design and manufacturing drawings that resulted in the project approach . described in this paper.

With the increased variability of today's large-scale mining operations, consistent flotation performance is important to improving and sustaining overall recovery through the circuit. The Newcrest Telfer Mine has implemented advanced process control technology to obtain stable level operation and consistent mass pull in the copper rougher and scavenger flotation circuits. The final result has been an overall reduction in variability, which impacts on both copper and gold recovery. This paper describes the methodology and implementation of the improvements in control at the Newcrest Telfer Mine as being an essential part of the business for minerals processing.

The induced elastic stresses in the sidewalls of gold-mining tunnels at a depth of 4000 m in the Witwatersrand exceed the peak compressive strength of even the best-quality quartzite rocks. Laboratory tests measuring post-yield stress versus strain response show that brittle fracture occurs, followed by a loss in strength associated with strain-softening behaviour. Numerical modeling based on an assumed Mohr-Coulomb criterion fitted to the test results shows that large ongoing deformations of the sidewall occur, leading to total tunnel failure without adequate support. A methodology is presented to enable a quick assessment to be made of support requirements in terms of ground characteristic curves for numerically derived pressure versus displacement. From these curves, estimates can be made of the force levels for cable bolting and of the thickness and strength requirements for shotcrete linings. As an example of its application, the methodology is used in a comparison of the relative stability efficiencies of a square-shaped tunnel and a horizontal ellipse-shaped tunnel.

The typical service life for a long distance slurry pipeline is15 to 25 years. Determination of wear rate for a pipeline could have a high economic impact on the pipeline project. Wear is a combination of chemical corrosion and mechanical abrasion. The contribution of each factor has to be determined project by project. Normally, chemical corrosion dominates the pipe wear in fine slurry pipelines. These pipelines have been designed with a velocity between 1.5 m/s and 2.5 m/s. Solids are suspended with high homogeneity across the pipeline section. Bottom wear is not much greater than the top wear and not sensitive to velocity. The wear pattern in the pipeline transporting medium coarse solids, such as milled ore and tailings, is different. Wear concentrates on the bottom of pipeline and the outer bends, and is more sensitive to flow velocity. Wear distribution along the pipelines is similar.

Deposition of gold-bearing deposits in the Witwatersrand Basin was controlled by hydraulic processes. These resulted in the formation of independent sedimentological facies areas having different statistics and semivariograms. Consequently, when there are indications that data are a mixture of statistical populations, it is important to decompose them into statistical subpopulations and analyse these independently. However, in the case of actual mining, physical position and extent of sub- populations are important and, as a consequence, any decomposition of data must take space into account if it is to be of use. An algorithm for the spatial decomposition of data into its sub-populations is described and is applied to real data taken from the Witwatersrand. Two distinct areas with completely different geostatistical parameters were revealed.

In some mining situations, backfills are not only required to be free-standing but are also expected to provide hangingwall support. It may therefore be specified that the backfill withstand a certain calculated stress within a given time. Given the materials available, the choice of backfill composition is not always straightforward, and an approach to the evaluation of cemented tailings backfill is therefore proposed. The general use of such a method will greatly assist in both the scientific analysis of the material properties for industry-wide purposes of comparison and decision-making as regards the choice of fill.
