The JKRBT (JK Rotary Breakage Tester) is a newly developed impact breakage testing device for rapid ore breakage characterisation, and has recently been commercialised after a three year comprehensive validation study, involving five major mining companies and six industrialised JKRBT units deployed worldwide. Comparisons of breakage mechanisms and characterisation data between the JKRBT and the Drop Weight Tester (DWT) indicate that, despite the differences in the breakage modes, the JKRBT can provide statistically similar A*b parameters, by using a data reduction procedure which takes into account the difference in the number of contact points, strain rate and potential for secondary breakage. Feedback from the validation sponsors has indicated higher productivity and better repeatability of the JKRBT compared with the DWT. This better precision, combined with the JKRBT’s wider particle size capability and wider specific energy range, provide a more powerful tool, ideally suited to rapid mapping of ore hardness in geometallurgical and comminution applications.

The Quintette Coal operation in northeastern British Columbia has one of the world's largest Preparation Plants, with a design capacity of 6.5 million tonnes per year of clean coal.This paper will discuss several innovative aspects of the flowsheet and plant design with particular reference to the selection of process equipment, materials handling and control systems.The operations and maintenance experience during the first two years of production will be described and discussed in relation to the design objectives.

This paper reviews the development of certain aspects of the electrical specifications of Anglo American?s suite of specifications for gearless mill drives (?GMDs?). These specifications are based on experiences in both Anglo American?s and others? operations, benchmarking against large hydro generators, the advice of industry and university experts, and continuous close co-operation with OEMs. To achieve a step change in availability additional final testing and electrical protection have been implemented, insulation requirements have been specified for machines to be operated at high altitude and clean area and access control systems have been developed.

Abstract- An application of logistic regression to mapping of gold potential in the Baguio district of the Philippines is described. Categorical map data such as lithologic units and proximity classes of curvi-linear features, based on spatial association analyses, are quantified systematically and used as independent variables in logistic regression to predict the probability for presence or absence of gold mineralization. Regression experiments to compare between using all independent variables that are associated spatially with the response variable and using only statistically significant independent variables are performed. The results of the regression experiments are similar; however, the use of all independent variables produces slightly optimistic results but better prediction rates for the known gold deposits in the test district. At least 68% of the ‘model’ large-scale gold deposits and at least 76% of the ‘validation’ small-scale gold deposits were predicted correctly. The predicted geologically favorable zones are also similar to delineated geochemically anomalous zones. The technique presented using logistic regression as a data integration tool is effective for geologically constrained technique of mapping mineral potential.

"Abstract - The Asturian fluorspar district consists of vein and stratiform deposits where mineralization is controlled by a combination of lithological and tectonic factors.It is postulated that these fluorspar deposits have been formed under disequilibrium conditions created during circulation of ascending hydrothermal solutions along faults and other high permeability conduits. Mixing of solutions is inferred from fluid inclusion studies. Cavity filing and replacement processes are very important in localizing the ore deposits and in determining their morphology.Permian volcanic rocks in the area yield a regional positive geochemical anomaly in fluorine implying that Permian vulcanism may be a possible primary source of fluorine.On a regional scale a relationship can be established between some of the ore deposits and important tectonic lineaments. The stratiform deposits preferentially occur within a calcareous-detrital facies located at the margins of basins. These basin margins are related to important synsedimentaryfaults.Fluorite is the only economic mineral in these deposits. Quartz, carbonates, barite and pyrite are comnmon minerals accompanying fluorite. Other minerals that may occasionally be present as minor components are: marcasite, chalcopyrite, fahlore, sphalerite, galena and related supergene minerals."

The strain softening relationship developed in part 1 is now applied to coal. Having determined the post-failure stress-strain curve for coal specimens, this information can then be used in a finite element program, such as Phase 2, to examine the post failure characteristics of coal pillars. Using example data, the strength of coal pillars of different width/height ratios are estimated and compared with well-known empirical pillar size-strength relationships. In addition, the post-failure stress-strain behaviour of a coal pillar is compared with an empirical relationship reported in the literature.

More mining companies are now investing in IT, including updating one of the traditional IT process control tools used in the mining industry: real time in-pit truck allocation control and monitoring systems, or fleet management systems (FMS). These systems have been used to maximize the overall mine production by improving equipment utilization and reducing production costs. Most modern operations monitor the in-pit operations using GPS and wireless communications to produce data. Improvements in bandwidth, sensors, and computing power are causing modern systems to become more complex and generate more data. However, human analysis by simple regression or table generation in spreadsheets of the data is becoming impossible. Data mining solves this data management problem. Data mining finds patterns and relationships in very large data sets. This paper describes the application of modern data mining techniques on truck dispatching systems in a real open pit hard-rock copper mine. The analyses conducted included determining how the trucks performed under particular conditions and allocation systems. The long-term benefits of this work are to identify strengths and improvement opportunities in truck assignment systems and establish the skill sets and IT infrastructure needed in undertaking more complex datadriven technology such as a truck dispatcher trainer.

"When Texas Gulf Sulphur Company discovered the Kidd Creek ore body in 1964, a crash program began almost immediately for the design and construction of a modern concentrator. It was necessary to mill two distinct ore types; one containing copper and zinc, the other lead, silver and zinc minerals. The final concentrator design was to handle 9,000 tons of ore daily in three circuits. One circuit was to treat copper-zinc and another lead-zinc ore exclusively on a permanent basis. A central circuit was designed with adequate flexibility to treat either of the above ore types in accordance with planned mining schedules. Ecstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary, now operates the mine and concentrator complexes for Texas Gulf. The mine is located 15 miles north of Timmins and the concentrator 15 miles to the north-east along Highway 101. The ore is hauled from the mine to the concentrator over a 17-mile railroad. Initial milling operations began in November, 1966.1 - ABSTRACTThis paper deals with bulk reagent handling at the Kidd Creek concentrator. The reagent section at Kidd Creek has operated excellently since milling began in 1966. The bulk handling techniques are satisfactory. They have contributed substantially to good working conditions, economical practices and metallurgical efficiencies. The bulk handling features described should be considered in existing and proposed concentrators."

"Abstract - Where block (selective mining unit) grade distributions can be determined, the effect of average random errors of block grade estimates on metal recovery can be evaluated quantitatively. That is, for a given estimation error and cutoff grade, it is possible to calculate the quantity of metal that is lost as a result of misclassifying ore blocks as waste, as well as the dilution that ensues from misclassifying waste blocks as ore. Example calculations using a computer program GAINLOSS and realistic block grade distribution parameters for both a porphyry-type deposit and an epithermal gold deposit illustrate some fundamental relations that are important in quality control of estimation and in reconciliations concerning a comparison of ore estimates with production.Where the cutoff grade is on the lower tail of the grade distribution, metal arising from dilution can be much less than metal lost through misclassifying ore as waste. Hence, average grade of milled material could possibly be higher than expected (estimated) and tonnes milled will be smaller than estimated.Where the cutoff grade is on the higher tail of the grade distribution, tonnes arising from dilution will be greater than tonnes lost by misclassifying ore as waste. Thus, tonnage mined will be greater than estimated and the average grade milled will be less than estimated.The software GAINLOSS permits rapid comparison of the tonnes and average grade for all blocks selected as ore for a variety of levels of block estimation errors. These comparisons can be incorporated in a financial analysis to evaluate whether or not it is worthwhile to improve a high, average block estimation error to some lower value."

"The toxicity of arsenic is well known and documented; however, the presence of arsenic in copper electrorefining anodes and electrolytes is critically necessary to produce high-quality cathode. Arsenic as well as antimony and bismuth concentrations vary relative to their concentration in the anode copper received from the smelter. The behaviour and benefits of arsenic in copper electrorefining and the detrimental effects of antimony and bismuth on cathode quality and tankhouse performance are discussed. This will include the minimization and mitigation of problems associated with arsenic, antimony, and bismuth—including cathode contamination, floating slimes, scaling, and anode passivation.RÉSUMÉ La toxicité de l’arsenic est bien connue et documentée; toutefois, la présence d’arsenic dans les anodes de l’électroaffinage du cuivre et dans les électrolytes est d’une nécessité critique pour produire une cathode de grande qualité. "Function and ApplicationsWater-only cyclones, (WOC) are a dynamic mineral separator which cause minerals to separate in a water medium by virtue of difference in specific gravity. Figure 1 shows diagramatic plan and sectional views of a water-only cyclone.A slurry of mineral matter and water is fed through the inlet opening under gravitational or pump pressure. The combined effect of centrifugal action and conical shape is to concentrate the heaviest fraction of mineral on the periphery and bottom of the cyclone. This layer of higher specific gravity particles increases in thickness and density between the cyclone inlet and apex. The action in the bed of higher gravity particles formed in the flattened portion of the cone surrounding the tip of the vortex finder deter;nines the specific gravity of separation or cut-point. Mineral particles of lower specific gravity flow with the bulk of the water, out the vortex finder. Mineral particles of higher specific gravity flow with little water out the apex. A more technically e:mct description of the functioning of the water-only cyclone can be found in previous publications noted in the references.The water-only cyclone was invented and refined by J. Vis man, formerly of the Canadian Mines Branch staff, between 1958 and 1965. The first industrial application noted in the literature was when it was introduced as a cleaner for fine coal in 1962. Since 1970 the water-only cyclone has become a common separation apparatus in many Canadian and foreign coal processing plants. The only other mineral industry application known to the author is in separation of gold bearing heavy minerals from sand<'>. The potential does exist for other applications and this area deserves to be investigated more thoroughly than it has been."

"Most underground diesel equipment is equipped with diesel oxidization catalysts (DOCs) to reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. DOCs do not alter nitrogen oxides concentrations but can promote the oxidization of nitric oxide (NO) to the more toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Vale and CanmetMINING have been researching how to reduce worker exposure to diesel emissions by testing mining equipment DOCs. Results indicate a > 77% decrease in carbon monoxide concentration but a 46–315% increase in NO2 concentration for 8-mode test cycles. It is recommended that DOCs that increase NO2 emissions be evaluated regarding their continued use in underground operations.RÉSUMÉ La plupart des équipements miniers souterrains sont équipés de catalyseurs d’oxydation diesel (DOC) afin de réduire les émissions de monoxyde de carbone et d’hydrocarbures. Les DOC ne modifient pas les concentrations des oxydes d’azote mais ils peuvent faciliter l’oxydation du monoxide d’azote (NO) en dioxyde d’azote (NO2), plus toxique. Vale et CanmetMINING effectuent des recherches pour réduire l’exposition des travailleurs aux émissions de diesel en analysant les DOC des équipements miniers. Selon les résultats, une diminution > 77 % dans la concentration de monoxyde de carbone est atteinte mais elle est accompagnée d’une augmentation de 46 à 315 % de la concentration en NO2 pour des cycles d’essais à 8 modes. "Since the publication of a literature review on this topic (McIvor and Finch. 1986), the author has been involved in more than thirty rod milling efficiency tests at seven different milling operations. There have also been several interesting additional articles on rod milling found in the literature. This update describes the most important findings from investigations carried out since the previous review, as well as developments in the techniques used to evaluate the grinding efficiency of rod mills.Rod Mill Power DrawA series of power draw versus charge level measurements were taken on the rod mills at Leg Mines Selbaie and Kidd Creek Mines Limited (McIvor. 1989). These revealed a significant (about 10070) loss in power draw with the installation of new liners, a common observation among rod mill operators. This loss in power draw depends on the liner design, particularly the average thickness and lifting face profile of the new liner. The theoretical power usage of both mills was approximately 5070 lower than that given by the Allis-Chalmers power draw formula (Rowland. 1982).The shape of the power draw versus charge level curve suggested an opportunity for reducing media consumption. By increasing mill speed, power draw could be maintained with a smaller mill load, most significantly for mills operating with high charge levels. Analysis of data from 62 installations confirmed this (McIvor, 1989). On average, a 10 percentage point increase in critical speed results in a 15070 in specific media consumption (Le. kg of steel consumed per kWh of energy consumed). Table 1 lists a number of relatively high speed rod milling installations. No negative effects on the drive train, liner life, or the tendency for rods to tangle have been reported. A reduced lifting angle of the new liner leading face (e.g. 45 versus 90 degrees from the mill perimeter) is recommended for higher speed rod mills (Leclerq, 1990)."

At True Hill in southwestern New Brunswick, low-grade porphyry-style Bi-8n-Mo greisen mineralization is associated with the cupola of an epizonal granite porphyry (granite) that also exhibits three episodes of brecciation. The first episode of brecciation is an in situ, 8 m to 10 m wide transitional zone of net-veined to coarse-grained "blocky" endogranitic mesobreccia that is chloritized and greisenized and hosts weak disseminated minerali.zation. In a zone closer to the host rockgranite contact, angular fine- to coarse-grained endogranitic mesobreccia with greisenized matrix is superimposed on the earlier transitional breccia. The latest episode is fault-controlled and consists of quartz- and chalcedony-hosted sub-angular to rounded fine-grained "pebble" mesobreccias that crosscut and brecciate the other breccia types, as well as the adjacent altered metasedimentary country rocks. The first two episodes of brecciation are magmatic-hydrothermal in origin related to hydrofracturing of the granite carapace and are accompanied by greisenization and mineralization, whereas the post-mineralization, silica-hosted, "pebble" mesobreccias related to hydromagmatic, low-temperature fluid circulation and/or boiling along faults near the contact. These magrnatichydrothermal and hydromagrnatic mesobreccias are similar to those associated with W-Mo-Bi porphyry-greisen mineralization at the Mount Pleasant deposit.

"The Dome Mine, located in South Porcupine Ont. has been in operation since 1910 and is owned and operated by Placer Dome Inc. The current milling facilities were constructed in two phases with the first being commissioned in 1982. It consists of a grinding, gravity separation, thickening, and leaching circuits. The second phase was commissioned in 1988 with the addition of the CIP, stripping, electrowinning, and carbon regeneration circuits.It is now common practice in the gold processing community to add liquid oxygen to leach circuits to increase both recovery and kinetics. Along with these benefits the metallurgical group at the Dome realized the potential to replace compressed air with liquid oxygen as a source of oxygen for the dissolution of gold. A plant trial of liquid oxygen was undertaken during the fall of 1991. The results of this first test were favourable enough to warrant further investigation, and a second plant trial was conducted in December 1991.The data generated as a result of each trial revealed that oxygen could be economically substituted for compressed air as a source of dissolved 02. The energy savings in required horsepower enabled a rapid payback period. Thus the project was approved in the spring of 1992 and l should be operational during the final quarter of 1992. INTRODUCTIONIn a continuing effort to reduce operating costs and improve recovery at the Dome mill it was decided to investigate the feasibility of adding liquid oxygen (02) to the leach circuit. It is now common practice in the gold processing community to add 02 to the leaching process to increase both kinetics and recovery. It was anticipated that an increase in kinetics would allow us to eliminate one or more leach tanks while maintaining acceptable recoveries. The metallurgical group felt that along with these benefits, the potential was also there to reduce power consumption through the reduction in the processing of compressed air which is quite costly (12 cents/1000 cubic feet per minute in 1991)."

Safe rapid drift development results principally in reducing exposure of underground workers to the working face. This reduction in exposure is not achieved until either the rock walls have been suitably scaled or sufficient support has been put in place. Rapid drifting enables quicker access to orebodies (increasing returns), higher production rates and a resultant lower cost of mining. The Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation And Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) has been developing technology and a methodology for safe rapid drift development within the underground metalliferous mining industry. In terms of rock scaling for underground metal mines, there is still considerable use of manual and mechanical impact rock scaling techniques. Two main issues result from this approach. The first is that in highly stressed or highly fractured ground, a decision has to be made as to when sufficient scaling has taken place. This is not always easy to do and hence operator judgment is a crucial element in this approach. During a baseline study of current rock scaling practices, a wide range of scaling practices were observed within five different underground mining operations; this demonstrates the difficulty inherent in the rock scaling quality decision making process. The second issue is related to the exposure of workers to freshly created rock surfaces. In manual scaling techniques this is unavoidable and despite the best scaling practices, accidents still occur. In an attempt to provide an alternative scaling technology, MIRARCO has been investigating highpressure water jet scaling for removing loose rock as part of the drift advance process. This technology not only provides a means by which scaling practices can be engineered (remove the loose material you want to in a given rock mass condition), it is also quicker and easily automated. Automating the scaling process removes workers from exposure to freshly created rock surfaces and also enhances the application of spray-on liners through improved adhesion of these support types to the rock surface. This paper describes the water jet scaling technology research and methodology for safe rapid drifting within the underground metaliferous mining industry and highlights the key issues and major drivers behind their continued development at MIRARCO.

Abstract-Geochemical background levels have been established for unmineralized sedimentary rocks that are elsewhere the hosts of Carlin-type gold deposits in the Getchell Trend. The Paleozoic rocks in the Winnemucca Quadrangle consist predominantly of the lower Paleozoic siliceous and clastic sequences that were carried eastward along the Roberts Mountains thrust during the Late Devonian and Early Mississippian Antler Orogeny and the late Paleozoic Havallah and Pumpernickel sequences brought along the Golconda thrust eastward during early Mesozoic Sonoma Orogeny. Over 260 rock samples were collected from the Paleozoic sequences. Major and trace elements were determined by instrumental methods best suited for the specific elements. The general geochemical features of the Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are discussed in detail with reference to the data of average abundances of elements in sedimentary rocks. The background and threshold values of certain trace elements in sandstone, shale, and carbonate rock of one formation, as well as back- ground levels for the entire sequence were obtained. The characteristic geochemical features of the Paleozoic rocks in this area include: consistently high Ba and low Au contents (1.1 ppb, 1.5 ppb, 1.1 ppb Au for average sandstone, shale and carbonate, respectively); generally low contents of those elements which may be of environmental concern such as As, Cd, Hg and Pb. Plots of major and trace elements suggest that the majority of the Paleozoic clastic rocks are related to a passive- margin tectonic setting. Samples with gold values higher than threshold are considered to have been affected by hydrothermal alteration related to gold mineralization. Most of these samples generally also have higher values of Sb, Hg, V and/or As. These observations support the use of such elements as pathfinders for gold, although V has not been identified as such before. Ba is not effective for gold exploration in this area due to the generally high background value of Ba, even though it may be an important pathfinder elsewhere.

"The suitability of a new organic reagent DS20 as a depressant for oxidized and carbonaceous pyritic lead-zinc ore from Nanisivik Mines Ltd. has been evaluated in the laboratory and in the plant.The depressant DS20 is a mixture of Lignosulphonate-Dextrin-Quebracho and was developed specifically for depression of highly oxidized and carbonaceous pyrite.The laboratory test work indicated that the poor metallurgy resulting from the oxidized ore could be improved to normal plant performance by the addition of the DS20 depressant with the existing plant reagents. The laboratory data suggested that lime consumption could be reduced when using DS20.In this paper, the development work and the plant trials with DS20 are described.INTRODUCTIONNanisivik Mines Ltd. treats approximately 2000 tonnes per day of lead-zinc massive sulphide ore, containing currently 1% Pb and 9% Zn. The concentrator operations have been described previously (1,2) and typical metallurgical performance is detailed in Table I.The concentrator flowsheet (Figure No. 1) and the standard reagent scheme (Table No. 2) demonstrate the relative simplicity of treatment of this coarse grained ore.A recently discovered satellite orebody - Area 14 - containing 2% Pb and 12% Zn was brought into production in October 1983. This ore had been oxidized to varying degrees by ground water; the pyrite mineralization was found to be very fast floating and a carbonaceous constituent present in higher than normal proportion also affected flotation. The simple high lime addition could not control the pyrite, and very low grade lead concentrates resulted; zinc metallurgy was also affected by this oxidized condition (Table 3)."
