"Crucial to the implementation of new computer-based information systems at Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited was a data communications network that would take computing power to the various mine and plant sites. Falconbridge required a capability to provide on-line data entry, inquiry, and reporting capabilities in three geographical areas, six mines, two mills, a smelter, approximately fifty shops, seven warehouses and numerous administrative offices throughout the Sudbury basin.Conventional cabling methods were rejected based on the projected cost of installation of necessary cables; lack of flexibility to meet the changing requirements of the mine environment; and the risk of losing service to an entire area depending on solitary communication lines.Instead, Falconbridge selected and installed a Data Carrier System (DCS) and Packet Switching Communication System from Teltone Limited, Markham, Ontario. This combined system ""piggy-backs"" computer data over voice-grade twisted pair wire, bringing data to the associated PBX equipment. From there data packets are assembled and routed to the central computer site where they are disassembled for entry into the host machine.Falconbridge has been successful in using existing technology to solve communications problems in a difficult environment. Plans for the future of this network will increase its utilization for technical and real time data communications in addition to the business systems workload it now handles. The Computer Services group in Sudbury is confident that the data highway will handle communications traffic well into the future.IntroductionIn late 1984, the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited undertook a review of their existing business computer systems. The results of this review indicated that there was an opportunity to improve the timeliness and quality of information coming from the existing computer-based systems while achieving an investment payback by undertaking the project. The greatest benefits from this project would be achieved if the computing tools could be delivered to the employees that were the day-to-day users of the data. Falconbridge's existing business systems were oriented to the batch mode of processing. An alternative solution to using the existing programs had to be found."

Orovalle Minerals S. L. operates a copper/gold mine in the Asturias region of northern Spain, with the operation dating back to December 1997. The feed to the El Valle mill, consisting of oxide/sulphide (skarn) mineralization, is highly variable, even on a shift by shift basis and presents challenges to the mill operating staff on a daily basis. The mineralogical characteristics of the ore are quite complex with copper present as native copper and sulphides as well as copper minerals with deleterious elements. Gold is present as native gold and electrum. The mill circuit includes SAG/ball mill grinding, gravity recovery of native copper and gold, flotation of copper concentrate, carbon-in-leach gold recovery and SO2/air cyanide destruction. The paper will provide a description of the different unit operations and present operating data of the mill operation.

"More than a dozen AEM systems are currently being used in the routine exploration for massive sulphides. The systems differ from one another in minor respects, but fall into four main categories: rigid-coupled in-phase/quadrature systems; towed-bird, single-component systems; differential systems; and passive systems.Although field tests are important in demonstrating the performance characteristics of the AEM/airframe assembly (noise-levels, coupling effects, etc.), more meaningful evaluations can be made through physical or computer modelling. The latter approach has been used to compare the response of twelve AEM systems to both vertical and horizontal sheets, simulating a large orebody and a con-ductive overburden respectively. The effects of height changes are also studied.The results demonstrate that each AEM system has its own particular advantages and disadvantages. The relative importance of these is a matter for the geophysicist to judge, on the basis of specific geological and environ-mental information. Data currently available on AEM systems are adequate to permit an objective evaluation of the systems for a particular exploration program."

The mineral industry has seen many significant changes in the past decade. Increasingly, it has responded to unanticipated pressures and demands with a variety of voluntary initiatives. Yet there is still much to do. Mining now takes place in a different context than was the case in the past. Socio-economic, political and environmental considerations must now be integrated into traditional mining systems. This process of integration needs to involve industry, governments, academics, communities and other stakeholders to design a new approach to mining, one that can be fostered through interdisciplinary links and holistic strategies. This paper considers the meaning of sustainability in the context of the Canadian mining industry and explores the need for a broader vision for the mining industry. The role of technology is then analyzed and related to an initiative recently taken by Canadian universities to develop a national network for interdisciplinary research into sustainable mining, CaSM.

ALTHOUGH the idea of roasting zinc concentrates in suspension had intrigued investigators for a number of years, no commercial application of a process appeared successful until the development of the "Cominco" process. The efficiency and high capacity of this process may be judged by the fact that nearly all other electrolytic plants and many zinc retort plants in the world use this method. A furnace of the Cominco type can roast without special preparatory treatment and without supplementary fuel, mineral sulphides such as zinc sulphides and iron sulphides containing varying amounts of moisture at any desired rate ranging from one-half up to full capacity. The full capacity of a unit is in general about three times that of a multiple hearth furnace of the same size. IT IS the purpose of this paper to show how the design of the larger slope hoists in use in the mines of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation has tended to evolve ta suit the particular conditions of operation. These hoists are all used for hauling coal in trains or trips of pit tubs up the mine slopes, which usually follow the dip of the seam . As the mine is developed to the dip and the slope grows in length, the length of the rope and the size of the hoist required to handle it rends to become extremely cumbersome. It has been found that the best economic conditions of hoisting are obtained when the length of the slope is limited to about seven or eight thousand feet. Beyond this length it is necessary to offset to one side of the line of slope and start a second or auxiliary slope, which will be served by its own hoist installed underground. With this hoisting distance as a basis, we find that we can economically hoist the outputs required, usually about 1,500 tans per eight hours per slope, by hoisting the coal in trips of about twenty boxes. This, on the grades obtaining, will require a rope of about l 1/4in. diameter, running at a speed of 1,200 ta 1,800 feet per minute, and requiring from 1,200 to 1,800 h.p. at the hoist shaft. The tendency is for the rope speeds of the surface hoists to be a little higher than the underground hoists which relay to them, so that the surface hoist has a small margin of time in hand. The oldest surface hoists were steam-driven, but, with few exceptions, these have given place to electric hoists. With the exception of one hoist, which was altered in design, the steam hoists have not had the opportunity of evolving in the same way as the electric hoists, and will not be mentioned any further.

"Special salt protection rings containing a water-swell• able, polymeric sealant are in successful operation in Canadian potash shafts. Installed above the Prairie Evaporite salt formation at a depth of 3,000 feet, the sealant is preventing formation water migration into the salt and pressure build-up on the concrete lining of both production and service shafts. The salt protection rings are not under the hydrostatic pressure of the formation water.The chemical sealant in use has the unique property of imbibing water and swelling. •Therefore, any water at• tempting to flow by the seal ring actually produces a tighter seal.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the sealant and its properties and uses. Installation of the material and its operation in two Canadian mine shafts is described."

THE Alaska Highway, in its course through British Columbia, traverses parts of two great physiographic divisions of Canada which are also distinctive geologically-the Cordillera in the western section and the Interior Plains in the eastern. The Cordilleran region in the portion of the Province with which this paper deals can be divided into four major northwest systems, known respectively from west to east as Coastal, Plateau, Cassiar-Omineca, and Rocky Mountains. The Coastal system consists solely of the Coast range except in the extreme northwest, where a part of the St. Elias range is included. The Coast range, characterized by mountains of great ruggedness,. is made up of an igneous complex of granitic rocks intruded chiefly as a great batholith. In places, spurs of these rocks extend into the Plateau heft, a partly mountainous tract largely occupied by quartzites, quartzose mica schists and their gneissic phases, and crystalline limestone with interbands and broad areas of chlorite, _hornblende, and sericite schists and bodies of intrusive granite gneiss-an assemblage of rocks known as the Yukon group. The Cassiar-Omineca system marks the divide between the Pacific and Arctic drainages. Its eastern boundary is well defined in the south by the Rocky Mountain Trench (see p. 229). The rocks of the system are, miainly, highly altered Palaeozoic sediments, but there are also Precambrian and Mesozoic rocks, the latter largely volcanic. The core of the system is granitic and there is evidence (see p. 221) to support the belief that it is of such a length as to constitute a batholith comparable to that of the Coastal system.

"This case study explores the usage of polymer ducting as a replacement to curtains and FRP for face ventilation in two coal mines. There are two mines looked at, one is the highest elevation underground coal mine in North America, the other is the gassiest mine in North America. The paper details the trials of both mines switching from FRP and curtain respectively to polymer ducting. The results discuss the ability for the mines to not only achieve consistent airflows and keep them in compliance but the unexpected positives. Mine A was allowed to do longer cross cuts due to increased air volume at the face. This drastically cut their costs of mining down due solely to modification of the ventilation cycle. Mine B saw economic benefits due to longer cuts between place changes. Both mines have documented lower dust, methane, noise, and improved wear and tear on their equipment as a result.INTRODUCTIONThe emergence of longwall mining in underground coal operations has resulted in new ventilation challenges. Numerous production crews strive to complete their development sections with enough time to adequately prepare for the upcoming longwall panel. Continuous miners will cut out two or three entry development sections per their ventilation plan, that is approved and controlled by MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration), which will drive amount of footage that can be mined at a time prior to installing roof support. At this moment the continuous miner, hereafter referred to as the CM, will back out of the entry and moves to the second entry to complete a similar cut. Typically, a roof bolter crew will pull in to the finished cut section and install ground support. This is called a place change style of production coal mining. There is an alternate method that includes a miner/bolter combination as well but that was not featured at either test site in this case study. Ventilation has to be provided to sweep the working face of each entry to control dust and gasses. Each task will have an MSHA prescribed ventilation requirement dependent on the dust levels and methane emissions of the rock for that particular mine. The CM, roof bolting and unused headings will each require constant ventilation but at different volumes. Since each working face is changing throughout the mining cycle the ventilation requirement in a working heading is never static and is changing with the working task.Traditional Ventilation ControlsTraditionally face ventilation for coal mining operations has been completed thru the usage of a curtain system and\or using auxiliary fans and ventilation tubing. Room and pillar mining systems typically utilize curtain systems, which use curtain walls that are installed by the miners by erecting wood framing and covering it with brattice curtain. This splits the drift width to allow fresh air to sweep the face and take the contaminated air and dust behind the curtain to the ventilation exhaust\return area of the mine. This method is difficult to adjust the airflow from entry to entry during changing cycles and requires that a wider drift is mined out in order to have enough room for the brattice wall. In operations that require roof bolting, this method limits the length of the cuts from the CM prior to advancing and can lead to not providing enough ventilation to keep dust and methane levels below compliance requirements."

"VAUGHAN THOMPSON designed the Thompson retrievable diamond drill wedge and reaming assembly in 1948. Since 1950, the Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Company, Limited has used the method extensively. The wedge, setting tool, and reamer have been modified slightly since they were first introduced. In 1951, Mr. Thompson designed the Thompson arc cutter. The purpose of this tool is to decrease effectively the diameter of the arc cut, using standard drilling tools. This directional drilling device is usually employed when a branch hole is desired. The Thompson arc cutter has been used with success at Birch Lake, Saskatchewan, at the property of Cuprus Mines, Limited, Manitoba, and at Thompson Lake, Manitoba.UsesThe Thompson retrievable wedge provides a simple method for:(1) Re-drilling lost core sections(2) Re-sampling sections of old holes(3) By-passing lost tools Correcting the direction of a hole(4) Drilling a branch hole to obtain intersections at a higher elevation than the original holePrevious to the spring of 1951, the wedge was used only for the first four of these purposes. Certain non-metallic minerals are used widely as fillers in the manufacture of many Canadian products. The first part of this paper deals in a general way with deposits of such minerals and their mining, with the concentration and preparation of the minerals for market, with specifications of the consumers, and with methods of control of the products to meet the specifications. The second part of the paper de-scribes talc as a specific example of mineral filler. Its production and uses in Canada and the possibility of producing higher grades of talc are discussed. Some suggestions are made for meeting the needs for mineral fillers as Canada's industry expands. RELATIVELY few people are sufficiently aware of the vast and important role that is being played in our everyday lives by mineral fillers. "The ore deposit mined by Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is one of the numerous nickel-copper sulphide bodies marginal to the large oystershaped mass of differentiated norite in the Sudbury district, famous as the world's most important nickel producing field. The unique character of the ore deposits of the district has resulted in its intensive geological study over a period of more than 50 years. The results of these studies have given rise to a voluminous geological literature and to a great deal of controversy as to the genesis of the ores. This description of the structural geology at the Falconbridge mine is presented in the hope that it may form a small part of the chain of evidence leading to a reasonably satisfactory explanation of the ore genesis.The mine, named after Falconbridge township in which the deposit occurs, lies along the southeast margin of the norite mass, which, however, is h::re concealed beneath a deep mantle of glacial sands and gravels averaging over 100 feet in thickness. As a consequence, the deposit was not discovered by the early prospectors, and it was not until 1916-17 that E. J. Longyear, of Minneapolis, located the ore by drilling(ll). The discovery was foreshadowed in 1899 by the work of Thomas A. Edison, who found indications of the deposit by what is believed to have been a combination of magnetic and electrical geophysical surveys. He sank a prospect shaft over what has to date proved to be the largest and richest ore section in the mine. A wet quicksand layer at the rock surface proved impenetrable, however, and the 'Edison' shaft never reached bed-rock.The Falconbridge property was acquired by the Lindsley interests in 1928, and ore output, since its inception in 1929, has gradually risen from a modest beginning to the present 2,000 tons and more daily. Total production in this period is 7,500,000 tons of ore averaging 1.72 per cent nickel and 0.89 per cent copper, together with a small but valuable content of precious metals, principally of the platinum group."

The implementation of Energy Management within the global mining industry has advanced significantly during the past 20 years. Consequently, the industry?s knowledge of energy efficiency improvement opportunities, more energy efficient technologies, renewable energy technologies, energy procurement practices, and most importantly, practical approaches for integrating the energy management best practices into business processes and operational procedures has improved greatly. Based on 25 years of experience leading the management of energy in mining operations and the Canadian mining community, the author discusses the key building blocks in the evolution toward becoming an energy efficient mining facility. Sustainable energy management depends on the internalization of the behaviors related to the effective energy use by a mining organization. The paper outlines the typical business drivers that stimulate top management commitment to allocate the resources necessary for this to happen. It also explores the barriers that mining companies must overcome to maintain the commitment. Additionally, it will advocate the need for the application of the principles of organizational change management as part of the energy management implementation process. The question regarding how energy management can be made to happen in a way that is practical for an established organization is answered by providing the details of the framework for energy management, the methodology for controlling energy use, and the roadmap for integrating energy as a key business parameter and production process input variable. An Energy Management System standard developed within the Mining Association of Canada?s ( MAC ) Towards Sustainable Mining ( TSM ) initiative has played an important role in increasing the capacity of the Canadian mining industry to manage energy. The impact of the application the MAC TSM Energy/GHG Management Protocol by Canadian mining companies will be discussed. In June of 2011, the international ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems standard was finalized and published for use. The structure of ISO 50001 will be outlined along with its applicability to the mining industry. Opportunities for practically improving mining energy performance along with the most appropriate current new technologies will be identified. A brief discussion of case studies will be included that demonstrates the successful implementation of Energy Conservation Measures ( EAC?s ) and economic benefits. In conclusion, thoughts on important areas of research and development related to increasing mining energy efficiency will be provided.

Approximately two-thirds of the annual 210,000 tons at copper refined by AMAX Inc. at the United States Metals Refining Company in Carteret, New Jersey, comes from a wide variety of copper scrap ranging from low-grade smelter scrap to wirebar-grade material. The equipment and methods used to effect such large-scale metal recycling in an urban area and the measures taken to collect and recover metal values from smelter and refinery byproducts while protecting the environment from pollution are described and discussed.

PILLAR extraction at the Sullivan Mine bas been in progress for over twenty-five years and bas .involved progressively larger pillars. The largest pillar blasted to date exceeds one million tons and is described in this paper. This blast is believed to be one of the largest to take place entirely under-ground. The Sullivan Mine, owned by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited, is located in the southeastern corner of British Columbia on the east flank of the Purcell range overlooking the twenty-mile wide Rocky Mountain Trench (Figure 1). The orebody is a bedded replacement deposit in argillites, varying in thickness up to 300 feet, but averaging about 80 feet. Above the 3900 Level, the dip varies from nearly horizontal to 40 degrees; be-low the 3900 Level it varies from 45 to 20 degrees (Figure 2). The effect of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), as a preceding stage to a conventional ball mill circuit at PT Freeport Indonesia?s C1/C2 concentrators, has been studied in terms of downstream grinding efficiency and circuit performance. When milling the product from the HPGR, mill capacity increased by 21% for the same product grind size, when compared to processing similar ore from a conventional crushing circuit. This achievement is a result of several reasons, among them: reduction in feed size (F80), fines generation beyond the proportional reduction in F80, reduction in ore hardness induced by HPGR comminution mechanism, optimization of the recycle system of the HPGR and ball string optimization in the ball mill circuit given the new feed to the mill.

"This paper summarizes the main conclusions derived from twenty-two technical presentations made at the 1973 meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors. Results of two surveys with response from over seventy mines were reported on Canadian milling practice for water re-use and on elimination of cyanide from mill effluents. Water and solution recycle in Canadian mills were detailed for copper, copper-zinc, lead-zinc-copper, nickel-copper, iron and gold mines. Cyanide elimination from mill effluents was reported under current practice and under requirements for further treatment by various other processes. Three recent process equipment entries into Canadian mills have been the on-stream particle analyzer, the new gravity concentration tables for recovery of fine tin and other heavy minerals, and solution-jet slurry equipment for reclaiming ground ore from storage. The principles of operation of this equipment were described along with the practical limitations that were found in their application to mineral processing. Capital costs and milling cost reductions were shown in some operations. Computer control of flotation mill processing was a major item on the program. Four major mining companies outlined their mill process control strategy, computer programs and on-stream analysis equipment. Some capital costs and personnel changes were presented, together with gains in concentrate grade and mill recovery. Recent development work has shown the effect of the type of grinding and of aeration on the recovery of sulphide minerals in flotation. One mining company reported a significant depressing effect on copper sulphide flotation while floating ore ground with mild-steel balls; also, pyrite appeared to be activated in the subsequent zinc flotation step. One company with extensive experience in the application of aeration to copper sulphide flotation showed significant improvement to copper recovery by pre-aeration. Both the effects of grinding and aeration were subject to the constraints of the chemical condition of the ore pulp. The metallurgy of silver recovery by combination grinding - gravity treatment and of gold recovery from a complex gold-sulphide ore were reviewed in two papers on precious metals. The latter paper further described the recovery of gold from the Cottrell collectors and the final disposal of arsenic from the dust collectors."

"THE WRITER'S acquaintance with Kootenay King mine is limited to a brief geological excursion in the vicinity. This paper has been compiled largely from maps of J. Sullivan, mine geologist in 1952, kindly made available to the writer by Transcontinental Resources; a 1942 private report by W. L. Brown; and personal communications with J. Sullivan. Remarks on regional geology, and the comparison with Sullivan mine, are specifically the writer's.The Kootenay King mine is situated in the westernmost range of the southern Canadian Rockies at an elevation of 7,300 feet. From the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, B. C., it lies 19 miles due east. Six miles of this distance are represented by the pronounced topographical and structural gap of the Rocky Mountain Trench. Mineral claims were locat-ed in the area prior to 1898. The deposit was first seriously explored in the late 1920s, and a small orebody was then outlined and developed. Mining and milling were undertaken in 1951.52. The orebody, amounting to about 14,000 tons, was mined out, and no significant new ore was revealed.The orebody is a replacement of dolomitic argillite by fine-grained galena, sphalerite, and pyrite. The sulphides are finely laminated in the direction of bedding, following out minor folds faithfully. The grade of ore estimated from diamond drill holes (W. L. Brown, 1942) was 11 ·I per cent zinc, 11 ·I per cent lead, and 3·8 ounces per ton of silver. The mineralized zone extends about 250 feet horizontally, 160 feet vertically, with a width of six to twenty feet.General GeologyThe country rocks are sediments of the Aldridge formation of late Precambrian age. For several thousand feet stratigraphically above and below the mine, the formation consists mainly of thinly laminated argillite and siltstone. Several horizons contain appreciable carbonate. About 2,800 feet stratigraphically below the mine, predominantly dolomitic beds mark the top of the underlying Fort Steele formation. The medium-bedded fine quartzites, which characterize about 10,000 feet of the Middle Aldridge in the Purcell range, have a restricted development amounting to only 2,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains. This member is about 2,200 feet above the mine horizon."

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. "Increased efforts to improve mine safety have led to various successful forms of ground control in Canadian underground mines. At Inca Limited's T-3 Mine in Thompson, Manitoba, a perimeter blasting method has been implemented in jumbo drilled development headings.The technique utilizes an increased number of perimeter blast holes in the drill pattern while decreasing the linear charge density of explosives in any individual perimeter hole. The decrease in perimeter charge density means less blast damage to the surrounding structure.The benefits realized include increased safety through less loose ground and substantially less scaling time, less overbreak and improved long-term drift stability. This paper highlights the development and implementation of the perimeter blasting program.IntroductionThompson Mine Thompson Mine is a 6000 ton per day underground nickel mine located just outside the city of Thompson, 400 miles north of Winnipeg. The mine is serviced by the T-I shaft and by the T-3 shaft. The shafts are 10 000 ft apart and are connected on several levels with the deepest operating levels at T-1 and T-3 being 4000 ft and 2400 ft respectively.The T-3 Mine presently produces 52% of the total Thompson Mine production and 65070 of the 3000 ft of mine development each month. Current development of the 5 million ton 1, C orebody below 2400 level at T-3 will maintain these production and development ratios.Depending on equipment requirements, development headings at T-3 Mine vary in size. The 1, C ramp, at 17 1/2 ft wide by 10 1/2 ft high, is presently the largest development heading at T-3.
