"The operations of Bethlehem Copper are situated in the south-central interior of British Columbia at an elevation of 4900 feet above sea level. Main road and rail transportation systems pass through Ashcroft in the Thompson Valley, which is 28 miles by road from the minesite. The operation was the first low-grade open-pit porphyry copper mine in British Columbia.The minerals are chiefly chalcopytite and bornite, while the rock is principally feldspar and quartz. In the outer fringes of the orebodies some pyrite is present. Average grade of mill feed is 0.55% copper.History of Milling Operations Production commenced in December 1962 at a rate of 3,000 tpd in a plant that comprised two-stage crushing followed by rod and ball milling. Production ratings were increased to 6,000, 10,000 and 12,000 tpd by the addition of a further stage of crushing and more rod and ball mills. When the last expansion was completed tonnage throughput exceeded the 12,000 ton designed rate and was stabilized at 15,500 tpd.However, recovery did not meet expectations at the expanded rate because of coarse flotation feed. Capacity in the rod mill circuits exceeded the subsequent fine grinding capacity, resulting in poor liberation. Studies were initiated to improve recovery without decreasing throughput.Description of Operation Prior to Pebble Milling Crushing with primary, secondary and a closed tertiary stage proceeds at a scheduled 20.5 shifts per week. Fine ore screened on 1/2"" x 4"" apertures is stored in a 30,000-ton bin ahead of two 12.5' x 15' rod mills. Rod mill discharge joins secondary ball mill (one 10.5' x 14' and one 11' x 14') discharge for classification in a single 50"" cyclone which closes the secondary mills. Overflow from this cyclone is split between three third-stage ball mill-pump-cyclone circuits (two 11' x 14' and one 12.5' x 15'). Prior to addition of the two pebble mills the flotation feed was produced by this three-stage grinding system. Grinding criteria are shown in Table I."

"Minnova Inc. has five operating divisions thoughout Canada. One of them is Lac Dufault which was established in 1964.Lac Dufault is located 15 km north of Rouyn-Noranda, in what is known as Noranda volcanic centre, in northwestern Quebec. For more than 25 years, Lac Dufault has produced copper, zinc, gold and silver from four different mines: Norbec, Millenbach, Corbet and now Ansil.Ansil, officially in production since July 1989, is one of the deepest mines presently in production in Quebec. ABSTRACT Under certain conditions of moisture and oxygen, sulphides can spontaneously self-heat. We tested a hypothesis that galvanic interaction between some sulphides can promote self-heating. Galvanic interaction is controlled by the rest potential difference between sulphides and particle size. A series of binary sulphide mixtures was tested. Individual sulphides and mixtures with low rest potential difference did not self-heat, but mixtures of high rest potential difference did. When testing pyrite-sphalerite mixtures, self-heating increased inversely with particle size, with the fineness of the pyrite governing self-heating, indicating the rate-limiting step is the reduction reaction. The results support the hypothesis that galvanic interaction contributes to sulphide self-heating. A possible mechanism based on hydrogen sulphide as an intermediate product is proposed. The understanding gained will be of interest to those involved in storage, shipping, and disposal of sulphides.

"The Kidd Creek concentrator is located twenty-six kilometres east of Timmins, Ontario, within a metallurgical complex including a 109,000 MTPY zinc plant and a new 59,000 MTPY copper smelter and refinery. A complement of 159 persons is employed in the operation of the concentrator.Ore from the Kidd Creek Mine is crushed underground to minus 15. 0 cm, then transported twenty-seven kilometres by rail 1:0 the concentrator. After being crushed to minus 1. 6 cm, the ore is further processed by grinding and flotation.The concentrator commenced operations in November of 1966 at a designed capacity of 8,200 MTPD. Two parallel flotation and grinding circuits treated copper-zinc ore (2.28% Cu, 5.63% Zn) and a third treated silver-copper-lead-zinc ore (230 g/MT Ag; 0.57% Cu, 0.88% Pb, 7.89% Zn).By 1975, the concentrator was treating 9,100 MTPD of ore. Seven concentrates were being produced, namely, high silve1: copper, low silver copper, lead, low silver zinc, high silver zinc, pyrite and tin.Planned minesite expansion to a second underground mine required increased concentrator throughput. Expansion of the concentrator enabling a thirty-three percent increase in copper-zinc ore throughput occurred during the period 1975 through 1978. This expansion included increased load-in capacity, major redesign in the crusher house, the addition of a fourth grinding and flotation circuit, the building of a fourth dryer, and numerous expansions of services."

The selection of a mining plant for carrying on development work presents many problems distinct in themselves, and affected by various local factors. In this paper, the writer proposes outlining and discussing in some detail the chief factors governing the economic selection of such plants. This will be followed by an enumeration of the underground and surface plant required for carrying on several hypothetical exploratory and mining operations. Where it is impossible or not convenient to obtain hydro-electric power, and where wood for fuel is scarce, we now find oil engines being used. A 100 h.p. oil engine, such as would be required to operate a three-drill air compressor, consumes approximately five Imperial gallons of fuel-oil per hour at full load. On the basis of a 60 per cent load factor, this gives, for eight hours' operation, a probable actual consumption of twenty-four Imperial gallons.

FOR forty years cyanide men have been intensively engaged on the treatment of sulpho-telluride ores. So far as we know, the processes used today were-with the important exception of the concentration plus high-lime process at the Victor mill (1915)-in use, or had been tried, in the earl y years of the century. Roasting, bromocyanide, ordinary cyanide, table and vanner concentration, floating and treating the concentrate, roasting con-centrates prior to treatment, etc., all were used at Kalgoorlie in 1904 or earlier. Flotation, followed by shipment of the concentrate to the Golden Cycle mill, was the practice at the Vindicator mine, Cripple Creek, for some years prior to 1917. Similar practice was employed in the Portland Independence mill at Victor, Colorado, and was lacer superseded by the table concentration, high-lime cyanide treatment of rails of the older Portland Victor mill. During all this time, an immense amount of research was being clone on these ores by the staffs of numberless companies. Conclusions were drawn and mills built. But if the results of one per cent of this research were ever published in sufficient detail for intelligent use by others, the Lake Shore staff has been unable to discover them, or does not recall having clone so. Government laboratories-as for instance chose of the Mines Branch, Ottawa, in or about 1927-have touched upon certain methods in their publications, but they simply have not had the time to finish the job. The paper by W. E. Johnston, Tellurides-Problem or Alibi? (E. & M.]., Aug., 1933), aroused wide interest and comment. It published conclusions, some right and some wrong, and gave the evidence adduced by the author i:n support thereof. Conclusions published without supporting evidence are to most of us worse than no conclusions at all. We suggest chat, if even one-tenth of the operators had published full, detailed results of their laboratory work, ad vance in the treatment of sulpho-telluride ores would have been very much accelerated. Therefore, we venture to inflict upon the Institute a compendium of the results of laboratory work performed during the past few years at the Lake Shore mill. It is really a summary of the more interesting results to date, prepared by the mill staff for their own use and benefit. But we hope chat the discussion under any heading is so detailed chat it will be intelligible to anyone interested in that phase of the subject.

The development of welded pipe has paralleled the general industrial development and, in particular, that of the petroleum industry. The petroleum industry's need for high-grade, economical pipeline material to make many 'of its projects feasible has been a significant factor in the development of light-wall, high-grade welded pipe. The modern welding processes, such as high-frequency, electric resistance, flash, submerged arc, etc., have some basically different characteristics. The modern high-frequency weld mill is a complex of specialized equipment that is integrated into a production unit. Each component in the unit performs a specific function in the production process. Quality control must be built into the process on an operating basis and, to maintain the quality required for pipeline standards, must be more than a policing operation. The further development of the welded pipe industry will be determined by changing and increasing demands. The technical and economic views and requirements that will influence the development have to be resolved.

"Vanadium has been produced from a variety of sources. This metal is known to make aqueous solutions of complex speciation as a function of vanadium concentration and pH. Considering the method of leaching, the impurities in the pregnant leach solution, and the planned vanadium product, different extractants and flowsheets can be applied for solution purification. This paper reviews the purification of vanadium leaching solution using organophosphorus, solvating, and amine extractants. This review focuses on vanadium separation from iron, molybdenum, and uranium, which are often present in vanadium resources such as primary ores, fly ashes, and spent catalysts.RÉSUMÉ Le vanadium est produit à partir de diverses sources. Ce métal est connu pour permettre des solutions aqueuses de spéciations complexes en fonction de la concentration du vanadium et du pH. En tenant compte de la méthode de lixiviation, des impuretés dans la solution mère de lixiviation et du produit de vanadium planifié, divers agents d’extraction et schémas de traitement peuvent être mis en oeuvre pour purifier la solution. Le présent article étudie la purification de la solution de lixiviation du vanadium au moyen d’extractants organophosphorés, solvants et aminés. Mesoporous gold sponge has the unique property of being both metallic and highly resistant to oxidation. It has potential application in catalysis, in bio-sensors, in optical coatings, in analytical chemistry and, as we show here, as the basis for a new kind of ultra-capacitor. Due to the cost of gold, the most probable niche for a gold-based ultra-capacitor would be in the high-power/high-energy regime, a region where gold would compete with devices based on RuO2. A high internal resistance limits the power that can be usefully drawn from existing carbon-based ultra-capacitors, and that this problem can potentially be overcome by gold-based devices. A simple proof-of-concept ultra-capacitor based on mesoporous gold is described and its behaviour during charge and discharge cycles examined. In this work a step change in the input or output voltage of the device was used as the controlling parameter. There was also a residual faradaic current resulting from traces of undissolved aluminium left over from the AuAl2 precursor used to make the sponge, and some charge storage due to polarization of the solution. Deconvolution of these three effects was not entirely accomplished, but an ostensible capacitance of about 7 to 14 mF/g Au was demonstrated. Further improvement from these early results seems likely.

"Bubble size in flotation is strongly influenced by frother concentration in the pulp liquor. There is no accepted method of judging the dosage and thus how effectively frother is being distributed to control bubble size is not known. This will hamper certain plant test work where constant bubble size (e.g., when comparing reagents) is implicit. Bubble size is not easy to measure in plant and gas holdup is suggested as a surrogate in the development of a proposed “meter” to estimate frother concentration. The meter is calibrated to enable frother concentration to be estimated on samples drawn from any location in the flotation circuit. The meter and its calibration are described.As general background the action of frothers in reducing bubble size by retarding coalescence is discussed and the bubble generation systems for which the effect will be important are considered.INTRODUCTIONBubble size is an important variable in flotation. The flotation rate constant k has been related to mean bubble size Db by k % Db -n with n ranging up to 2 (Ahmed and Jameson, 1989) and even 3 (Yoon, 1993). Recent work has introduced k % Sb, the bubble surface area flux, given by Sb = 6 Jg / Db (where Jg is the superficial gas velocity or volumetric gas rate per unit cell cross-sectional area), i.e., n = 1 (Gorain et al., 1998). Regardless of the exact value of n, the significance of bubble size in flotation remains. In many plant trials it will be implicit that bubble size has not changed and attention will focus on other process variables. The measurement of bubble size, or a surrogate, would be useful addition to any test work.The size of the bubbles is influenced by several variables, gas rate, gas injection system (e.g., impeller design and rotation speed in a mechanical cell) and pulp composition (chemicals added, percent solids), but the most important is frother concentration (Harris, 1976). The frother functions by retarding coalescence (see appendix), which acts to preserve the small bubbles generated in the pulp (and permits a stable froth to form on top of the pulp). The measurement of bubble size is thus related to measuring frother concentration. The distribution of frother and whether sufficient (to control bubble size) is reaching the intended parts of the circuit then become important considerations. At present there is no simple way to judge frother concentration in a plant. In this communication we introduce a possible methodology, a “frother concentration meter”."

"Pure cadmium sulphide was leached by the action of the bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans in the presence of finely divided sulphur. The influence of time, temperature, pH and concentration of inoculum on the extent of the cadmium extraction was studied. Under optimum conditions, up to 72 per cent of the cadmium could be dissolved over a six-week period. A cursory study of the role played by elemental sulphur seems to indicate that its presence is essential but that the sul1>huric acid produced through its oxidation is a minor factor in the cadmium extraction."

"The operation of industrial flotation columns requires the control of at least two variables, the interface position and the bias rate, by manipulation of some appropriate operating variables. Problems arise due to the reliability of existing methods of measuring the bias (i.e bias = tailings water - feed water), a situation which has often forced the industry to disregard this control loop. Moreover, when using such a measuring approach, the identification of the process dynamics is impossible. A second problem arises from the possible interaction between both control loops that might call for the use of a more complex multivariable control strategy.Recent work done at Lava1 University has demonstrated the feasibility of an independent sensor for bias, which models the relation between the conductivity profile across the interface and the bias value using a neural network algorithm. A 250 cm height, 5.25 cm diameter Plexiglas laboratory column was equipped with a series of conductivity electrodes in its uppermost part (across the interface) to measure both interface position and bias rate. Using such equipment, the flotation column dynamics were identified. The results thus obtained permitted the design and implementation of a distributed PI control strategy, where bias was associated to wash water rate and froth depth to tails rate. Both PI controllers were tuned using a frequency-response tuning method. Results of both identification and process control are presented and discussed.INTRODUCTIONFlotation columns are used for the separation of valuable minerals from a carrier gangue. Typically, this device is a tall (9 to 14 m height) cylinder (1 to 3 m in diameter) although other cross sectional shapes are also used. Finely ground ore is fed as a pulp at about 2 m from the top of the column, and pressurized air is introduced through a sparger at the bottom. If the pulp has been properly conditioned with adequate chemical reagents (collectors and modifiers), the valuable mineral particles falling by gravity will attach themselves to the rising air bubbles, and the air-particle aggregates will rise to the top of the column where they overflow as a stream called the concentrate. The gangue particles,, that do not attach to the air bubbles, fall down the column being withdrawn at its bottom in a stream called the tails.A particular characteristic of flotation columns is the addition of a fine spray of water at the top. As the water flows down through the froth zone, it washes out the entrained gangue particles from the mineralized bubbles, thus improving the quality of the concentrate recovered at the top. As a result of its cleaning action, this water stream is called the wash water and the upper zone, the cleaning zone. In order to ensure a downward flow of wash water, a proper water balance must be kept in the froth zone, otherwise the water added at the top might shortcircuit to the concentrate without performing any cleaning action. This net downward flow of water inside the froth zone is called the bias and represents an important operating variable of a flotation column."

"IntroductionThe Ancient Egyptians recovered gold from the mud in the bottom of ponds by having teams of maidens sit around the pond dipping goose feathers dipped in grease into the mud. The gold would preferentially stick to the oily surface and was periodically washed off to give a gold concentrate. This was a forerunner of today's flotation processes.In Greek mythology Jason and the Argonauts pursued the Golden Fleece, which was a primitive form of gravity concentrate produced when gold ore slurry was passed over a sheeps fleece. The heavy gold settled and was caught in the fleece, producing a rich concentrate that allowed Jason & Company to perform the first recorded case of highgrading. The process was a forerunner of todays shuiceboxes used in placer mining.From these simple beginnings, gold metallurgy has progressed to a state where very complex flowsheets are proposed, sometimes to perform a simple metallurgical task. Figure (i) shows a hypothetical flowsheet to identify the range of unit processes that might be brought to bear on a refractory ore. Abstract -Detailed sampling using a portable diamond drill, and interlaboratory comparison of selected samples have been combined with statistical studies of truncated populations to establish the gold content of several outcrops in the Val d'Or area. The outcrops chosen are non-mineralized. The background gold concentration in the rocks of the region is 5 ppb or Jess. Gold is distributed relatively homogeneously within the outcrops studied except for slightly increased concentrations within quartz-tourmaline veinlets. Three samples, of which 20 grams of powder are analyzed for each, can adequately determine the gold concentration of a structurally simple outcrop in the Val d'Or area.

A Step which, it is believed, will prove extremely beneficial to the Quebec asbestos-mining industry was taken during 1931, when the asbestos mine operators of the Province assembled to work out a uniform method of naming the products of their mines. The outcome of several meetings was the drawing-up of a classification which defined, limited, and designated anew the numerous grades of asbestos marketed. It entailed no drastic departure from the existing processes of grading, nor any revolutionary changes in methods of testing, but aimed rather to perfect existing methods. The classification proposed has been accepted by all operators in the Province, who, from January first of this year, began introducing the new nomenclature. Unless one is conversant with the properties and mode of occurrence of chrysotile asbestos, with the unique milling methods devised for its recovery, and with the history of the development of their technique, he may not readily understand the basis of the new classification. For information on these and other data concerning the industry, the reader is referred to a recent publication, Chrysotile Asbestos in (Canada, by James Gordon Ross, issued by the Mines. Branch of the Department of Mines, Ottawa. The object of this paper is to present briefly some of the phases in the evolution of the classification of Canadian chrysotile asbestos, in the hope that the recent effort to standardize the marketable products of one of Canada's most important non-metallic mineral industries will open a field for discussion, fruitful in new ideas and constructive suggestions. The necessity for the grading of asbestos results fundamentally from the fact that the price per ton depends on the length of fibre. At all times in the history of the industry, the very limited available supply of the longer grades, as well as the requirements of the trade, have caused relatively very high prices to be paid for fibre over half an inch in length, while for the shorter grades the price decreases rapidly, and at a rate which bears no proportionate relation to the length of fibre.
