Abstract

?Environmental and social impact assessments (ESIAs) are: ??process-driven and scientific processes ??The process entails a number of steps and procedures which result in obtaining a licenceto operate ?and moving more towards a social license to cooperate. ?However, the primary premise of ESIA is to facilitate the consideration of environment and the communities in planning and decision-making which would ultimately make it possible to arrive at decisions that are ?sustainable?. ?Hence, ensuring the development of the mining sector on a sustainable basis is a critical challenge that needs to be addressed by the global community.
