Roof, pillar and floor stability is a most important requirement in underground coal mines because it represents the leading cause of fatalities. In future coal mine planning the geotechnical aspects must often be minimized owing to unavailability of data. It is, therefore, very important to include a geotechnical investigation as part of the coal exploration program. Data which should be collected basically include the geological discontinuity characteristics, the rock strength characteristics and the groundwater aspects. Many times the only source of such data is the exploration boreholes. Therefore, an emphasis must be made to extract the maximum information from the core and the borehole. Data collection methods can include the preparation of detailed geotechnical logs for the roof, coal and floor. Laboratory strength testing will provide estimates of the mechanical properties of the various lithologic types. Slaking and swelling tests provide an insight into the stability characteristics of the rock materials immediately enclosing the coal seam. The boreholes may be used to provide permeability and pressurization data. Having developed a suitable geotechnical data base allows various stability prediction methods to be used. These include a geotechnical appraisal of the roof and floor units, depositional environment methods, multiple overlay techniques, hazard analysis techniques and classification/rating systems for roof and floor. The basic geotechnical data and the stability prediction methods form a basis upon which preliminary rock mechanics designs may be developed. Of particular importance to future coal mining are those designs relating to longwall mining because most companies are thinking in terms of the greater safety and greater productivity offered by longwalls. Items which should be ad- dressed when considering a longwall system include the panel layout in terms of a total mining plan, strata mechanics, roof/floor bearing capacities, face support requirements, face length, entry and pillar

IN recent years considerable publicity has been given to the problem of atmospheric pollution by fuel-burning equipment. Legislation has been stimulated and smoke ordinances have been enacted, the provisions of which show a definite trend toward stricter control of the emissions not only from the stacks of industrial fuel users but also from the chimneys of domestic consumers. As a result of war conditions, some slackening in the enforcement of these ordinances may be noted, but this is only a temporary expediency caused by the changes necessary in the distribution of the nation's fuel supplies and difficulties in securing the necessary equipment. Previous trends may be expected to continue in the postwar period. Largely because of the consumer demand for automatic heat, but partly because of the legislation against smoke emission, there has been a marked increase in the use of domestic underfeed stokers with the past decade. When correctly adjusted and operated, these units reduce the smoke emission materially, so that even the high-volatile bituminous coals may be burned with little or no emission of objectionable smoke. Unfortunately, however, the use of the domestic underfeed stoker introduces another problem; namely, fly-ash. PRODUCTION OF FLY-ASH The term "fly-ash" is a misnomer, since the fly material is generally a mixture of small carbonaceous particles varying from green coal to coke, and inorganic particles ranging from fluffy ash to small particles of fused clinker. For want of a more comprehensive name, however, the term fly-ash is used throughout this paper to include all the fly material. Even with hand-fired furnaces a certain amount of fly-ash is produced, which necessitates periodic cleaning of the boiler flues or furnace radiator, the smoke pipe, and occasionally the chimney itself. With stoker operations the amount of fly-ash is increased many fold, because of the higher velocity of air travel through the fuel bed. Frequently the amount of this fly-ash attains such proportions as to constitute a definite nuisance to the householder and his neighbors and distracts very materially from the otherwise automatic or semi-automatic performance of the stoker. Six or seven years ago the United States Bureau of Mines started development of instruments for the purpose of accurately measuring the vibrational movement of the earth in the vicinity of quarry blasts. For this work a new type of seismometer has been developed. A number of these have been constructed, the accessory field equipment has been assembled, and approximately 200 field tests of actual quarry, blasts have been made. The results of some of these tests have been published 2/ and others are the subject of two manuscripts now in preparation. So far the attention of the investigation has been centered on ascertaining the characteristics and behavior of the ground vibrations. Occasionally, when opportunity arose, measurements of the vibrations occurring in houses or other structures caused by-quarry blasts were made, but without any attempt at direct correlation or interpretation. During 1936 the National Bureau of Standards conducted some experiments to determine the normal vibrations to which the wells and floors of buildings are subject. Cooperation of the Bureau of Mines was requested in measuring the displace-ment. This afforded an opportunity to study the affect of mechanically induced vibrations end make limited comparison with previous records of vibrations from blasting. This paper deals with the experiments made in cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and includes some comparisons with effects from quarry shots. The results are in the nature of a progress report only, and are not intended to draw definite conclusions. These tests were concerned with the determination of the maximum amplitudes of vibration possible in the floors and walls of a typical dwelling when subjected to commonly experienced vibrations. The dwelling tested was obtained by the National Bureau of Standards. It was a large four-story stucco building, 41 ft. south of the southerly curb of Park Road, in Washington, D.C., which was constructed about 1900 and was supported on overburden. The basement floor elevation was approximately that of the pavement of Park Road, Park Road runs east and west; the front door of the house faced north.

The Choctaw coal-field is a direct westward extension of the Arkansas coal-field, but its coals are not like Arkansas coals, except in the country immediately adjoining the Arkansas line. From the base of the coal-bearing rocks up to the top of the coalmeasures, I find a total thickness of at least 8500 feet. This great mass of coal-bearing rocks consists of an alternation of slates, shales, sandstones and coal-beds, with their accompanying under-beds of fire-clay. Only one small bed of limestone was observed. This occurs near the middle of the series; it is about eighteen inches thick, and quite arenaceous. The formation is naturally subdivided by seven or eight thick beds of sandstone, varying from 50 to 200 feet in thickness, the outcropping edges of which form a series of more or less bold " hogback " ridges, the interbedded shales and slate forming the intervening valleys. The base of the coal-series is a massive sandstone, ranging from 100 to 200 feet or more in thickness, lying immediately beneath the Grady coal-bed, which is the lowest known coal. In the district embraced between. the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad and the Arkansas State line, this sand-rock usually forms a bold semi-mountainous ridge. This is the ridge through which the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad passes at Bryan station, where the Grady coal-bed is opened and worked, from which point it can be traced westward without difficulty, passing about three miles north of Le Flor on the same railroad, thence west to the " Little Narrows " (which is merely a gap in the ridge), 'and beyond to a point two miles west of the Thompson-McKinney place, where it swings abruptly north for a mile or more, only to resume immediately its westward course, forming for some miles the northern boundary of the valley known as the " Boiling-Springs Prairie," beyond which it trends somewhat

Drilling was not entirely satisfactory in the search for native copper in the Osceola amygdaloid footwall, for oreshoots mined were more continuous than drilling indicated. The Geophysics Dept of Michigan Technological University developed a portable induced polarization drill hole probe with a 3-electrode configuration and a sampling radius of 5 ft ±. A 20 ma current of alternately reversed polarity is pulsed at 3.5 sec intervals and readings are taken every 2 ft. Potential is read during the "on" cycle for resistivity determinations. During the "off" cycle, after 10 ms delay, the 1P potential is sampled for 10 ms and recorded. Resistivity (ohm-ft) and "S" values (mv/v) are plotted on semi-log paper. A lithologic log is plotted based on resistivity and anomalous S values noted. The low resistivity amygdaloid contains sills of high resistivity basalt. Verified by core logs, contacts between amygdaloid and basalt could be picked to ± 0.5 ft from resistivity alone. Lithologic logs of long-steel holes, based on resistivity, then replaced sludge logging. An S value of 30 mv/v was established as the lower limit of diagnostic 1P effects in mineralized amygdaloid and 50 mv/v as a threshold value for ore. Of 914 footwall zones drilled, 315 were probed yielding 203 anomalies. Success increased from 34% for drilling to 72% for drilling and probing. As checked by mining, 46 probe results were 78% correct. Failures were due to the instrument not detecting copper or to the misinterpretation of an anomaly. No false anomalies were found. During the past ten years, the Calumet Div. of Calumet &Hecla, Inc has conducted extensive exploration and mining in the footwall of the Osceola amygdaloid lode in the native copper district in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In an attempt to delineate more clearly the extent and nature of high-grade footwall copper mineralization, 876 diamond drill and long steel holes aggregating slightly more than 47,000 ft have thus far been drilled from the accessible hanging-wall workings in the Osceola No. 6, 13, 14 and 15 shafts. Early in this program it became obvious, through inspection of footwall workings in progress, that due to the erratic and bunchy occurrence of the native copper in the footwall zone, the exploration drilling was failing to outline completely the extent of the oreshoots. Work was undertaken two years ago at the Hammond Laboratory for the purpose of determining the magnitude of the elastic range in single crystals of pure metals by means of creep tests, the assumption being made that if a true elastic range exists, the elastic limit represents the maximum stress for no creep. A sensitive extensometer was constructed, and creep tests were made on zinc single crystals at a variety of loads and temperatures1. It was soon discovered that there is no measurable elastic limit in ductile zinc single crystals at, or above, room temperature. The inference that pure metallic single crystals may not possess a definite elastic range was not justified, however, since zinc had been tested in creep only above its recrystallization temperature, and several investigator2,3,4 had already shown that above the recrystallization temperature polycrystalline metals will flow under very small stresses, while below that temperature stresses of a much larger magnitude are required. For that reason, it was decided to extend the study of the elastic limit to other metals having a higher recrystallization temperature than zinc. Aluminum and silver were selected, because of the ease of obtaining pure materials and of preparing large single crystals, and because the crystallo-graphic glide system of these metals is well known. Owing to the limited time available, the elastic range was investigated by slow tensile tests rather than by creep tests. The function of a preposition is to show the relation of one thing to another; it is necessary therefore for the writer to select the preposition that indicates the particular relation, otherwise he will fail to express himself clearly. Is it against common sense &o suggest that a Government is justified, morally as well as constitutionally, in preventing the decay of an industry by insisting upon the amalgamation of the prosperous with the needy? All these seven prepositions are used correctly. With the first dredge introduced in Russia, of Werf Conrad, Haarlem, make, this method of alluvial mining became important. Here the prepositions "with", "in", and "of" are used wrongly. He means: "This method of alluvial mining sprang into importance shortly after the first dredge, made at the Werf Conrad, Haarlem, was introduced into Russia." The statement itself is not true, but for that I am not responsible. Once, while I was serving with him, we were frozen in out of sight of land in the Gulf of Pichili in the North of China. Admiral Fisher wrote thus. He has used nine prepositions in making this brief statement. The sequence of three prepositions "in out of" is particularly awkward. Lounsbury says : One might fairly infer from the way in which it [newspaper English] is often spoken of that with the steadily increasing circulation of this sort of periodical literature there is no hope whatever for our speech. "Of that with" is lamentable. The construction is thoroughly bad, and it is bad mainly because the misplaced prepositions have tangled the meaning. I suggest:

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE manifold inconveniences resulting from the absence of a uniform standard of mass for determining the weight of precious stones have long been obvious. This lack has been keenly felt in commercial transactions, and those who have devoted time and research to the study of historic diamonds and precious stones have had frequent occasion to deplore the absence of such a standard in the past. In a paper read in Chicago in 1893, before the International Congress of Weights and Measures, held in connection with the World's Columbian Exposition, the writer suggested dividing the carat into 100 parts, and constituting a standard international carat of 200 mg. ; that is, 5 diamond carats or 20 pearl grains to a French gram, making 5,000 carats or 20,000 pearl grains to a kilogram. He also called attention to the fact that while this would depreciate the present diamond carat or pearl grain only about 2.5 per cent., it would abolish the troublesome discrepancies between the various carat-weights now in use, and could be easily explained and understood everywhere.1 The subject of the various diamond carats, their incongruity, and the resulting confusion as to the correct weights of historic gems when definite records of them are searched for, has been fully treated by me in an extensive study of this subject in The Book of the Pearl.2 To the earnest and unremitting efforts of C. E. Guillaume, Director of the Bureau Internationale des Poids et Mesures at Sèvres, is largely clue the eventual success of this eminently desirable reform, which lie has constantly urged both by articles on the subject and by addresses delivered in Paris before the International Committee for Weights and Measures.3

FULLY a decade ago, demand for ground mica began to exceed supplies of scrap mica from manufacturing operations and of waste block from feldspar and sheet mica mining in the United States, with the result that in recent years the market has absorbed larger and larger quantities of mica recovered as a by-product from clay washing,1 as a joint product with kyanite,2 and by grinding schists. So far, only schists that contain a large percentage of mica have been utilized for making ground mica, but already there has been a good deal of wishful thinking with regard to recovering mica as an aid to the prospective working of low-grade gold ores and ores of certain base metals. With wet-ground mica selling at $60 to $100 a ton and even dry-ground mica worth over $20 a ton, many ores that could not be considered as otherwise workable under present conditions will show commercial possibilities if they can be made to yield even a relatively small percentage of salable mica. An interesting paper might be written on the coming role of industrial minerals as joint products of metal mines, It is largely a matter of mar-kets. Many years ago I watched the mess left behind the gold dredges in the mountains of Colorado and thought of the Denver sand and gravel operators who prided themselves upon their canniness in providing devices for catching gold merely as an incident to their regular business of selling what we miners classed as "tailings." Nowadays almost every milling or mining operation near settled communities finds use for at least part of its waste for road material or concrete aggregate and several eastern iron mines have gone into the crushed-stone business. Promoters now mention fertilizer "filler" as potentially salable at all the way from $1 to $10 a ton, or whatever is needed to cover costs of mining and treating the "ore" and leave the metal values as "clear profit." Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include : land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-way, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. See Fig. 1. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.

Rather large amounts of titanium minerals and some zircon and monazite are being recovered from dune sands about I. miles west of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines, Southern Experiment station, has been interested in developing additional large deposits of similar sands in other areas of Florida. The results of a field study have been published1 concerning the sands occurring on Trail Ridge which runs north and south about 30 miles southwest of Jacksonville. This investigation was undertaken in order to identify the opaque titanium minerals occurring in Trail Ridge and because of the economic importance of Florida titanium minerals. Nature of the Problem The minerals present in the heavy fractions (sp gr > 2.94) of the sands are principally opaque minerals; staurolite, zircon, sillimanite, tourmaline, kyanite, rutile, a small amount of corundum, traces of the zinc spinel gahnite and garnet. Epidote, monazite, hornblende and ti-tanite are present in other dune sands but these minerals were not noted in the samples collected on Trail Ridge. All of the minerals except those which are opaque can be readily identified by the usual petrographic methods. However, Opaque minerals cannot be examined satisfactorily by transmitted light. Polished sections of the opaque-mineral grains were examined but these sections did not furnish useful information. Consequently, it was necessary to use means other than the usual petrographic methods to identify them. Previous Investigations of Heavy Minerals in Florida Sands Martens2 has described the heavy minerals in the Florida beach sands and has classified the opaque minerals as ilmenite with minor amounts of leucoxene. Miller3 studied a number of sands collected by Ross and Mertie in Florida. He states that the material from the Florida beach and dune sands that commonly has been called ilmenite has essentially the chemical composition of the material that has been called arizonite.4 The x ray diffraction patterns of several samples indicated that the supposed ilmenite is essentially amorphous, with only weak lines corresponding to ilmenite, and hence the material is unlike the type of arizonite from Arizona. Opaque Titanium Minerals Rutile is essentially titanium dioxide. However, as pointed out by Dana,5 important amounts of Fe+2 and Fe+3 as well as Cb and Ta are reported in some analyses.

WHEN a new mine is opened, and often when an operating mine must adapt itself to physical or economic changes, a mining system must be selected in complete detail. In the past the plan chosen was usually the product of the local staff alone, however limited the training and experi-ence of that staff might be, which often resulted in the introduction of methods that were familiar to the staff, but not so well suited to the con-ditions as others unknown to the local men. A new management, noting the difficulties with the existing layout, might make modifications or complete changes, so that many mines in their history have seen a whole series of mining systems, each somewhat laboriously grafted on to its predecessor. This should not be interpreted as a condemnation of the older staffs for sticking to the tried systems, such as open square-sets in the early days at the Homestake, because they knew it would work after a fashion, nor does the statement apply to the technically trained, and usually broadly experienced staffs of most present-day properties. The older miners did not have the variety of tools and methods, nor the present freedom of transfer of information as to what the other man is doing, and so did the best they could under the circumstances. Finally, the higher grade of the ores made the choice less vital. The ever-increasing need to mine low-grade orebodies, with a fixed or even lower price for the metal produced, has caused an increasing need for low-cost mining. In most new mines this has simplified the problem of selection by eliminating from consideration all of the high-cost systems, but it has also complicated the choice by the necessity for refinement in detail and a close adjustment of the plan selected to all the conditions at the property. In these low-cost problems any textbook division of mining systems as applied to "beds, veins or masses" avails little as a guide. It should be realized at the outset that to' be successful under modern competitive conditions a system of mining must be worked out with elaborate detail, with careful time scheduling and control of the various elemental operations, and that after it is introduced it must be run with a large amount of technical direction.

We rejoice that the world-war is ended. We are proud of the part played by the English-speaking peoples—all doing equal honor to the traditions they share in common. One of the compensations for the calamity of the past four years is the fact that the Briton and the American, striving together in the cause of human liberty, have learned to understand and to respect each other. The mother country entered the fight resolutely at the beginning, while yet unready to meet the carefully prepared onslaught of the enemy; then the sons from the overseas dominions rallied to the old battle-cry eagerly and effectively; and last, but not least, the stepsons came from across the Atlantic, speaking the same speech, playing the same game, and fighting in the same clean way. It was a great foregathering of those that use the language of Shakespeare and idealize the principles of liberty for which the friends and associates of Shakespeare stood sponsor three centuries ago.' At a time like this it is pleasant to dwell upon the fact that the liberal Englishmen who organized the Virginia company were the pioneers of self-government on the American continent. The Virginia Assembly, convoked in 1619, was the first example of a domestic parliament to regulate internal affairs on this side of the Atlantic.2 The Governor of Virginia, Sir Edwin Sandys, had been a pupil of Richard Hooker at Oxford and from that political teacher he and his friends had imbibed the idea of combining civil liberty with constitutional order. To this group of large-minded Englishmen, the American colonists owed their liberal charters and their successive triumphs over the royal prerogative. Let it be noted that the American colonists had to deal with James II and George 111, the two smallest minds in the list of British kings. Another historical note, more pleasant to record, is the connection between the two principal groups of American settlers. In 1608, when the Pilgrim fathers, William Brewster and John Robinson, led their Separatist congregation to Holland and there prepared the expedition to America, they were assisted by Sandys and the Virginia Council, who were willing to share their privileges with them. When the Pilgrims set sail in 1620 they had the promise, obtained by Sandys from King James, that they should have freedom of worship,

Review of difficulties experienced in drilling directional wells in the offshore Grand Isle Block 43 field showed most failures of drill pipe, drill collars and casing to have been associated with excessive dog-legs. Alleviation of difficulties was approached by synthesizing theoretical and practical concepts in a planned dog-leg control program. Preventive measures necessary to control dog-leg severity and corrective measures used to reduce unacceptable doglegs are discussed. When other measures fail, deliberative measures as outlined can be employed after the probable cumulative fatigue damage to be sustained by the drill pipe has been determined. Results of a program successful in virtually eliminating problems stemming from excessive dog-legs indicate that control of dog-leg severity in directional wells is feasible and will cause no decrease in the over-all drilling rate. INTRODUCTION Prompted by an increasing frequency of drill pipe, drill collar and casing failures, a study of 50 directional wells representing 592,000 ft of hole, including 444,000 ft of deviated hole, drilled in the offshore Grand Isle Block 43 field was conducted in early 1965. A number of drill pipe washouts and six keyseating problems were recorded and a detailed review was made of 16 failures which had required fishing effort in 10 of the 50 directional wells drilled prior to June, 1965. These problem wells are exemplified by Wells G and F for which pertinent data are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Data pertaining to all of the 16 failures are summarized in Table 1. Inspection of these data shows most of the problems to have been associated with dog-legs in excess of theoretical limits suggested by Lubinski' and excessive dog-legging is indicated to have been concomitant with whipstocking in several of the problem wells. Results of the investigation agreed with those reported by Schenck2 who had concluded that problems could be expected when dog-leg severity exceeded limits proposed by Lubinski. Since Schenck had demonstrated the desirability and feasibility of drilling directional wells without excessive dog-legging, a dog-leg control program was established in June, 1965 for wells drilled in the Grand Isle Block 43 field. This paper reviews the methods by which theoretical and practical concepts were synthesized to develop a program of preventive, corrective and deliberative measures which virtually eliminated problems stemming from excessive dog-legs in directional wells. A survey of the status of ore dressing in 19231 placed particular stress on the need of research in the crushing and grinding of ore, especially on the need for a method of measuring the surface of the products obtained in crushing and grinding and for fundamental data on the law of crushing, in order that intelligent conclusions may be drawn from actual crushing or grinding experiments. There has been no satisfactory means of determining the surface of crushed products. The results have been judged entirely by the amount of the various sizes produced, based on sieve sizing for particles above 74 microns in size and on microscopic measurement or elutriation for particles below 74 microns, a method which could give only a general idea of what had been accomplished. The fact that the long controversy between the followers of Kick and of Rittinger has resulted in no accepted conclusion is evidence of the need for fundamental data on the crushing law. Some Methods of Measuring Surface of Particles A dissolution method was used by Wolff to measure surfaces of glass powder. A mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide was the solvent and the amount of glass dissolved in two hours from the powder was compared with that dissolved from a glass plate.2 Lately Herbert F. Kriege has used the dissolution method in determining surface of calcite and limestone.3 Dr. Geoffrey Martin and his coworkers in England have also used a dissolution method to determine surface on quartz. They compared the amount of quartz dissolved from the sample in one hour by a hydrofluoric acid solution with the amount dissolved from a measured quartz

In another paper' the writer has shown that the low permissible maximum fiber stress in a loaded zinc sheet demands a much closer support spacing than is used for steel. The limiting fiber stress in 13-gage (0.032 in.) sheets having a 1-in. depth of corrugation was found to be about 5000 lb. per sq. in. on a 37-in. span under a load of 40 Ib. per sq. ft. Corrugated steel sheets are commonly laid with spans varying from 48 to 60 in. In order to increase the span in 13-gage zinc to 54 in. (a common spacing) the metal must be capable of withstanding, under long-continued loading, a maximum fiber stress of about 10,000 lb. per sq. in. This is known to be impossible with unalloyed zinc. In this paper the writer describes a series of experiments leading up to the development of an alloy capable of safely sustaining this fiber stress. The effect of alloying on the slow creep of zinc was studied by means of static tensile tests, accurate determinations of apparent elastic limits and finally by means of loading tests on full-size roof sections. Two industrial buildings roofed with alloyed zinc sheets on spans involving fiber stresses in excess of 10,000 lb. per sq. in. have been under observation for over two years without signs of sagging. Experimental Work Two methods of increasing the maximum permissible fiber stress in zinc were considered. Cold rolling, which' increases the stiffness and tensile strength, was found to decrease the resistance to slow flow. Alloying, therefore, provided the only feasible means of obtaining the desired result, It was recognized that the improvement secured by the solid solution of natural impurities was insufficient. Practical limitations to the usefulness of silicon steels are the hardness and brittleness silicon imparts to iron, making iron-silicon alloys of more than 8 per cent. silicon content unusable except where castings can be employed. In the use of commercial silicon steel, in thin rolled sheets, as in transformer construction, when the silicon content exceeds 4.2 per cent. the sheet is too brittle for satisfactory shaping by punching or similar operations. When such a brittle steel is sheared, it frequently breaks along a haphazard path in advance of the cutting tool. In Fig. 1 is shown a slightly enlarged view of the sheared edge of a 14-mil enameled sheet of nominally 4 per cent. silicon steel. In 5 in. along the sheared edge, only 44 per cent. was actually cut; the rest was torn, with the path of fracture varying widely from the path of travel between the shears. This is probably an extreme case of such brittle-ness, but a shearing or punching test is not necessary to reveal brittle-ness of this order; narrow strips will break when bent between the fingers. In Fig. 2, the proportion of actual cut edge is greater, but secondary fractures branch off at about 30" from the line of shearing in advance of the cut. Deprived of the support of adjacent parts of the sheet, the tips of the angles are bent out of the plane of the sheet by the shears, leaving a peculiar flared effect, like the set of the teeth on a saw. Numerous brands of virgin pig lead are used in the manufacture of lead and lead-alloy cable sheath for commercial cables. In changing from one brand of pig lead to another a readjustment of press operating conditions is nearly always necessary. This is due largely to different flow characteristics, and some brands extrude at a much lower pressure than others; for example, copper-bearing lead requires much more pressure than a low-bismuth lead under the same operating conditions. With the modern type of lead press the extrusion practice in general differs very little. Molten lead at a temperature of 375" to 400" C. (710" to 750" F.) is cast in a water-cooled cylinder and allowed to cool or solidify into a slug for six to nine minutes, This slug is forced into the die block and around the core tube through which the cable runs. The • die block is held at an optimum temperature by means of gas flames, usually 175" to 225" C. (350" to 435" F.). Measurements of the temperature of the cable sheath taken at the time of extrusion have covered a range of 190" to 225" C. (375" to 435" F.). According to Tammann, the rate of extrusion for a metal under constant pressure through a simple orifice is almost doubled for each 10" C. rise in temperature. Because of the irregularity of die-block construction, such a great increase is not obtained in lead-cable extrusion practice. To obtain more definite information about the effect of small percentages of metals usually present as impurities in virgin pig lead, a series of compression tests were made covering several different brands of lead and various alloys. Since the usual temperature of the sheath is approximately 200" C. as it emerges from the die block, these compression tests were all performed at 200" C. Five different brands of virgin pig lead were selected, as follows: Brand A: A desilverized western lead of very high purity. This lead contains neit,her copper nor bismuth. Brand B: A bismuth-free southeastern Missouri lead, usually containing 0.05 to 0.08 per cent copper. Brand C: A copper-free mid-western desilverized lead of very good grade, usually containing around 0.06 to 0.10 per cent bismuth.

Joseph E. Thropp, Jr., Indiana Harbor, Ind.:—To what do you attribute the fact that in some localities the by-product coke sells at a premium over the ordinary bee-hive coke for foundry use ? If the cell-structure is preferably soft and rather thick in coke for foundry use, as I understand it, do you mean that by-product coke has soft and thick cell-walls ? William H. Blauvelt, Syracuse, N. Y.:—As I say in one of the paragraphs of my paper, the tendency seems to be towards the manufacture of foundry- and furnace-coke under somewhat different conditions. The development of the best cell-structure in coke, of course, has not reached perfection, but we are making progress, and we are inclined to believe that under ordinary conditions the best furnace-coke, that is, coke with the hard cell-wall and the well-developed cell, is produced at fast coking-time and high heats, whereas the best foundry-coke seems to be produced at somewhat lower heats. In one of our plants we are making furnace-coke in 16-hr. coking-time, and foundry-coke in 20-hr. time. Foundry-men want the strong, tough coke. I think the furnace-men present will agree that the best furnace-practice requires a hard coke, with a well-developed cell-structure. Replying to the question as to the reason for higher prices being realized for by-product foundry-coke than for bee-hive coke, of course, the immediate reason is that it suits the foundry-men better. Perhaps one cause may be that we are able, by the selection of coals, which is not usually practicable at bee-hive plants, to get a quality and analysis best suited to foundry-work, with high carbon-content, and with cell-structure and physical strength especially suited to the foundry-men's ideas.

It would be a difficult matter to trace from the beginning the very few improvements made in the burning of fuels prior to 1860. Donbtless the crossing of the sticks of wood in building a mood fire early appealed to our savage ancestry as a means of expediting its effectiveness for their crude culinary purposes. Stones and andirons came later in assisting the admission of air to the under part of the fuel bed, while beacons and cressets, utilized metal bars as supports for the same purpose. It is probable that Tuba1 Cain owed his success to the use of bellows making possible the use of mixed fuel and charge upon a hearth. With the development of working in cast iron, grate bars came in, and they are still with us doing duty in every household and almost every art where heat is a factor. Little was done beyond these crude methods prior to 1860. With the advancement of knowledge came the fuel-gas producer, a natural child of the retorts employed in supplying illuminating gas. It is only within the last 15 years that the conclusion became general that complicated systems for saving heat would not remedy deli-. ciencies in its primary development, and within that time there has been great advancement in the means of producing initially a fire of high effciency, so that to-day we are moving rapidly toward both high development and high absorption, with the resultant of high efficiencies. In studying the subject of the availability of pulverized coal as a fuel, it may occur to ask, why has this not come up earlier? This, question would be naturally prompted by recalling the fact that Thomas Crompton's English patents upon his methods were issued to him nearly 40 years ago. A conclusive answer to this, however, is that Crompton at that time had very crude facilities for making what was at best a very imperfect pulverization of the coal, arid the expense of preparation mas very great. He does not seem to have been aware of the advantage of a thorough drying of the coal in the
